On the 3rd of October, more than 50 Samsung Electronics Italy (SEI) employees participated in SAVE for Rome, a volunteer project dedicated to renewing Rome’s Aldo Fabrizi Elementary School. This project is part of the SAVE – SAmsung Volunteer Employee initiative, which aims to provide all SEI employees with an opportunity to play an active role in hands-on projects for the society they live in. Last July, more than 250 SEI employees took part in SAVE for Milan, renewing the Robert Baden-Powell Park. Other SEI employees took part in SAVE for Kids, renovating the Benedetta D’intino Foundation, a center for children who experience difficulties in communication.

Samsung Electronics Italy employees repaint the outside walls of Aldo Fabrizi Elementary School in Rome

Employees focused mainly on renovating the entrance of the school, repainting the entrance gate and the fences, as well as walls and benches vandalized by graffiti and writing.

Aldo Fabrizi Elementary School sports a fresh look after SAVE for Rome (right)

SAVE for Rome was organized in collaboration with Retake Rome, a “non-profit and non-partisan movement of citizens, engaged in the fight against degradation” of metropolitan areas in and around the communities of Rome. The effort was also in-part a collaboration with the students of Aldo Fabrizi, as they volunteered to participate in the renovation by painting parts of the school. The activities students took part in gave them not only an excellent opportunity to learn to give back to the communities for a common good, but also an example of a culture of giving.

Students show enthusiasm in repainting their school

Samsung, as leader in technology, strives to provide various solutions to improve people’s lives and help them Do What You Can’t. SAVE for Rome is just one example of Samsung and its employees giving back to the community and investing in the future of the children. This project is also a part of the annual Samsung Global Volunteer Festival held in October, a broader approach for Samsung employees to positively impact communities around them.

No matter how united the community, it can only thrive if it has the tools to do so independently. That’s why Samsung Electronics is working with developing regions through its Nanum Village program.

The Nanum Village project sees partnering with local governments to provide support. But what makes the effort so noteworthy is that it aims to tackle poverty at its source. And in addition, it helps villages to be the masters of their own destinies by enabling growth.

China is one of the important locations for Nanum Village program. After consultation with the government of Shaanxi, where Samsung’ semiconductor facility is located, Samsung selected Fuping County as a village location. The area received investments into its education, medical facilities, drinking water, and a community center. The Nanum Village enabled Samsung to further deepen relationship with the local area.

As part of the project, residents living were able to move in mountainous areas to flatter, more living surroundings. There, they are able to build orchards and goat farms that will help them become financially independent.

When a Village becomes a Tourist Town

Fuping County isn’t the only place in China that is becoming a Nanum Village. Nanwei in Laishui, Hebei is a mountainous village only 20km away from a national park. Sure, it’s beautiful but its underdeveloped infrastructure has prevented it from becoming a tourism hotspot. To make matters worse, many of the younger residents have left the area in preference of bigger cities.

Samsung has been working over the last three years to invest in eco-tourism in the town. It’s a joint project that has also called on the help of Hebei government and China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation.

This Nanum Village will remodel the underdeveloped farms and create eco-touristic villas. This will result in a virtuous cycle that attracts tourists, creates jobs, and boosts the local economy. All this enables the town to become more sufficient from its own resources.

Test operation of the eco-touristic town began on September 20, 2015 and twelve eco-touristic villas will follow by the end of 2016. By 2017, Samsung will develop eco-friendly gardens as part of the wider effort to make Nanwei a fully-fledged eco-friendly town.

Creating Communities

Nanum Villages are just one of the main five citizenship projects led by Samsung Electronics. For the Nanum Village, there are already ten locations that reach 200,000 people. Samsung has established solar power facilities in Central and South America, built a community center in Argentina and also built Nanum Villages in three African countries.

Samsung isn’t just about creating products and services, it’s about impacting lives. Creating Nanum Villages is one of the routes through which Samsung can make a difference and help developing regions to plan their own tomorrows.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced component solutions, introduced a full line-up of chip-scale LED packages* (CSP), including 0.6W-class and 3W-class packages, CSP arrays, and PoW (Phosphor on Wafer) packages.

Samsung’s CSP technology significantly scales down the size of a conventional LED package by combining advanced flip chip** technology with phosphor coating technology, thereby eliminating any need for metal wires and plastic molds. This shift enables more flexible and compact designs when manufacturing LED lighting modules or fixtures, and lowers the production and operational costs of LED lighting systems. Samsung’s CSP products also allow for flexibility in adjusting the size of the light-emitting surface and its associated luminance level, to meet the diverse requirements of a wide variety of lighting applications including bulbs, spot lighting, downlighting and street lighting.

“Our new CSP products overcome what had been significant performance limitations of conventional LED packages. By expanding our CSP line-up, we expect to provide greater value to the LED lighting market, enabling new possibilities in LED lighting and giving our customers greater design flexibility,” said Jacob Tarn, Executive Vice President, LED Business Team, Samsung Electronics. “We are aggressively innovating through the introduction of well-differentiated LED components, while further strengthening our presence in the LED marketplace in terms of technology and cost.”

The new CSP line-up has been fortified with a wide range of operating current options from 0.6W to 3W and even 10W LED packages. The new packages complete Samsung’s CSP technology roadmap, which was announced at LIGHTFAIR International 2015 when the company’s CSP technology commercialization plan was unveiled.

Mid-power, 0.6W-class CSP LED packages – LM101A & LM102A

The LM101A and LM102 are Samsung’s new mid-power CSP packages for LED lighting. Based on advanced flip chip technology, the LM101A and LM102A feature ultra-slim form factors and simple package structures that enhance their cost competitiveness. Each offers two voltage options – 3V and 6V, which make the packages applicable to numerous applications including bulb, high bay lighting, downlighting and spot lighting.

Along with enticingly small form factors, the mid-power CSP LED packages also provide wide beam angles, therefore delivering even greater design flexibility. Samsung’s LM101A and LM102A packages are available in full color temperatures with three color rendering index options from CRI 70 to CRI 80 and CRI 90.

High-power, 3W-class CSP LED package – LH181A

The LH181A is a high-power CSP package that features approximately 12 percent higher luminous flux*** at a maximum current of 1.5A, compared to Samsung’s 3W-class ceramic-based high-power LED package. The LH181A offers a high luminous flux, typically at around 162lm/W (@350mA, Ra70, 5000K).

Each LH181A measures 1.91×1.91mm, which is about 30 percent smaller than Samsung’s ceramic-based LED solution. The package’s ultra-small size enables much smaller lighting designs and better lm/$ (lumens per dollar) value that can be especially useful in outdoor and spot lighting applications.

The LH181A provides a wide beam angle of 140 degrees making it also applicable to street lighting by adding a lens as a secondary optic solution.

CSP Arrays – LH204A & LH309A

Samsung’s CSP arrays, the LH204A and the LH309A, are high-power LED solutions with an operating wattage range from 5W to 10W. The LH204A is a 2×2 array of CSP LED chips that delivers 12V at a 5W-class operating wattage, while the LH309A is a 3×3 chip array offering 26V at a 10W-class operating wattage.

The CSP arrays provide high light quality by adhering a single phosphor to the FX (flexible) circuit board on which tiny CSP LED chips with low thermal resistance are arranged. The use of a thin flexible-film FX circuit board accentuates the thin design of the arranged CSP LED chips. The CSP arrays are suitable for spotlighting applications where high light quality is required from a single light source.

Next-generation CSP solution – PoW (Phosphor-on-Wafer) LED package

Samsung’s Phosphor-on-Wafer (PoW) LED package technology embraces the advantages of CSP LED packaging, while overcoming limitations of cost reduction by upgrading the chip manufacturing process through the use of 8-inch GaN-on-Si wafers instead of 4-inch sapphire wafers. This transition will enable a higher quality CSP LED package by eliminating the chip rearrangement process. The reason for this is that the phosphors can be directly coated on the surface of the GaN-on-Si wafers before being diced, while sapphire wafers have to be cut into chips first and then rearranged to be coated with phosphor.

By simplifying the LED component manufacturing process and improving LED package quality, the PoW LED package technology is expected to contribute significantly to the growth of the LED lighting industry.

Samsung has already applied its PoW technology to 4-inch wafers in flash LED packages for mobile devices since several years ago. Samsung also plans to utilize the PoW technology for its new CSP product line-up for lighting applications by the end of this year.

Samsung will showcase the new CSP products and technologies at the Light + Building 2016 event under the theme “Lighting & Beyond” in Frankfurt, Germany, March 13th – 18th. Visit Booth B04, Hall6.2 to learn more about Samsung’s differentiated LED technologies and innovative component solutions.

One outstanding example of this collaborative artwork, the “Saepio”, successfully portrays cold semiconductor-based LED light sources in the form of a chandelier that is lit by curved optical fibers without a lamp or luminaire.

In creating the art piece, eight of Samsung’s S-series LED modules and two power supply units were used. Samsung’s S-series is a lineup of linear LED modules optimized to replace conventional T5 or T8 florescent fixtures including troffers and linear luminaires. The S-series enables great design flexibility by offering a wide variety of options for luminaire designers.

“While it is expected that LED-based lighting will take over more than 50 percent of the lighting industry in about two years, this collaboration that converges compelling artwork with our LED module technology will offer another chance for industry audiences to experience new possibilities in LED lighting designs,” said Jaewook Kwon, Vice President, LED Strategic Marketing Team at Samsung Electronics.

Artist Il Hoon Roh is an architect and designer who has been gaining a reputation in the field of design art in Europe for his collection of novel artwork that has been built with an assortment of visually provocative and technologically proficient materials.

“I tried to make an art piece that can be used in real life within the framework of lighting,” Roh said. “This collaboration project using LED lighting modules was very exciting and highly interesting. I enjoyed the process of turning familiar lighting furniture into a new form of artwork.”

“My art pieces are usually owned by art collectors overseas,” Roh added. “Any malfunction after being sold can cause critical damage to the artwork and my reputation as an artist, as I have to guarantee the quality of my creations. Working with Samsung LED lighting modules, which have completed a series of quality assessment tests, gave me confidence that my art pieces will remain reliable for a long time.”

Samsung will present “Saepio” in its booth at the Light + Building 2016 trade fair in Frankfurt, Germany from March 13th to 18th, along with a few other collaborations with the artist – the “Fabric R” series with Samsung’s COB LED packages, and the “D Light” with Samsung’s CSP linear modules.

Visit Booth B04, Hall 6.2 at Light + Building 2016 to experience more of Samsung’s differentiated LED technologies and innovative component solutions under the theme of “Lighting & Beyond.”
