Since 2002, Samsung Electronics has been sharing its philosophy and vision for the year ahead – and beyond – through a total of 6 keynote addresses at CES. At CES 2022, the first CES event to be held offline in two years due to the pandemic, Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman and CEO at Samsung Electronics, is set to walk onto the stage and present his keynote address under the headline ‘Together for tomorrow’ to present the direction for technological development going forward.

Ahead of Han’s keynote at CES 2022, Samsung Newsroom has compiled the key topics and technological trends presented at Samsung’s CES keynote addresses between 2011 and 2020 to provide an insight into the evolution of the phrase ‘future technology’ what really means.

1. 2011: Human Digitalism

The main topic at Samsung’s 2011 CES keynote was the convergence of digital technology and human beings. Humanism, a philosophy that originated in the culture and arts fields, had recently reached the technology industry and become the latest trend. Illustrating this development, Samsung’s keynote that year centered on the concept of human digitalism, and throughout the address, the company advocated for the “reinterpretation of technology”, an idea that sees the values that human beings fundamentally pursue combined with advanced technologies.

BK Yoon, back then President and Head of Samsung’s Visual Display Business, outlined four guiding principles to underlie human digitalism. These are: interacting with the world in an easy and convenient manner anytime, anywhere; creating products that blend naturally and seamlessly into consumers’ lifestyles; providing enjoyment through new discoveries; and pursuing corporate social responsibility that prioritizes the environment and pursuing a better tomorrow. The company also outlined its plan to apply this vision of human digitalism to all its technologies and products in order to bring about a new digital paradigm shift.

2. Mobilizing Possibility

In 2013, it was the very center of all electronic products – their components – that was gaining attention. Accordingly, in their CES keynote address, Samsung introduced its processor – the brain of their mobile devices – its energy-efficient memory solutions – which help reduce electricity usage – and YOUM, its next-generation flexible display line-up.

The keynote speech, delivered by Dr. Stephen Woo, back then President of System LSI Business of Device Solutions Division of Samsung Electronics, highlighted how society and consumers’ lives are set to benefit from the innovations generated when such advanced component technologies go beyond their boundaries and unite with various technological fields.

3. 2015: Unlocking the Infinite Possibilities of IoT

At its 2015 CES keynote address, Samsung presented its blueprint for what the era of IoT the company planned to realize will look like. Samsung’s blueprint envisioned a world in which all kinds of products would move forward together with digital technology. In addition, Samsung introduced its essential technologies for realizing this IoT-powered world, including ultra-small, energy-efficient and intelligent sensors and semiconductor chips. BK Yoon, back then President and Head of CE division, emphasized the importance of open platforms in order to achieve a true realization of this vision, and accordingly introduced the SmartThings platform, a hub for all kinds of smart devices and services.

4. 2016: IoT, In Sync With Real Life

In their 2016 keynote address, Samsung introduced stories of how IoT had become part of daily life to the audience. Samsung began the keynote by introducing the three key elements of IoT: performance, user environment and security. Dr. WP Hong, back then President of Samsung SDS, introduced their innovative technologies, such as the Samsung Family Hub refrigerator which is a perfect example of IoT playing a role in the home environment. Samsung also affirmed its commitment to providing infinite value to its consumers by expanding its platform openness through cross-industry collaboration going forward.

5. 2020: Age of Experiences

At the beginning of a new decade, Samsung opened CES 2020 with a keynote address that heralded the beginning of a new age, the ‘Age of Experiences’ – the age in which personal preferences and experiences are foremost. The keynote speaker H.S. Kim, back then Samsung Consumer Electronics President and CEO, also shared the company’s vision for the electronics industry over the upcoming 10 years, which highlighted that, by merit of users that prioritize their experience and enjoyment of their products rather than just their ownership of them, personalized technologies able to satisfy each individual’s needs, smart homes and cities and robotic life companions are set to become more important. Samsung also emphasized in the keynote that it will become even more committed to expanding and advancing technologies by focusing on a better future for the users as the driving force and ultimate purpose behind their development.

And ‘Together for Tomorrow’ in 2022

At the upcoming CES 2022, Samsung is set to give its keynote address under the theme of the ‘Together for tomorrow’, within which the idea that ‘technology should exist for humanity and the Earth’ is paramount.

Samsung is set to introduce its multifaceted efforts to contribute to making life on Earth more sustainable, and emphasize the need for everyone to participate in reducing climate change wherever they may be. The company will also be introducing its latest innovative technologies to help users enjoy even more enriched lifestyles based on optimized, customized service for each and every person, along with enhanced experiences of being connected to one another.

Ahead of the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which is the global stage for the latest consumer electronics, a panel of innovation award judges came together to choose the winner of the CES 2013 Innovation Award.

What grabbed the judges’ attention was the 85S9, Samsung Electronics’ 85-inch Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV.
Many people consider a standard TV set to be comprised of a panel, neck and stand; however, the 85S9 was recognized for the elegant harmony between its understated yet sophisticated black frame, as well as the slim yet strong panel within the frame.

27 Samsung Electronics products received the CES 2013 Innovation Award, including six products in the TV category.

In addition to the CES 2013 Innovation Award, each year the Best of Innovations Award is presented to a product that receives the highest rating in design and technology, regardless of which product category it is in. In 2013, the 85S9 received the Best of Innovations Award for its unique design that completely breaks away from the standard rules of TV design.

01. Satisfying the needs of the premium consumer market

Samsung Electronics has continuously set new standards in the mass TV and premium TV markets. The company’s designs and cutting-edge technologies have led trends by creating innovations based market and consumer needs. These factors have enabled the company to assume leadership for seven consecutive years in the global TV market; however, the company recognized the need to push further and advance into the upper premium TV market.

The lifestyles of potential customers in the ‘upper premium TV’ segment were also important to consider. Under the assumption that customers want to maintain their lifestyles, the 85S9 needed to blend into the living environment and interior décor seamlessly.

These customers prefer a TV that has an upscale gallery feel, blends into the home’s interior décor, and adds dignity to the space. But it was challenging to express a sense of existence with the ultra-large TV if we were to use previous TV designs that included a stand, neck and panel. We even tried the ZEN style (a Far East design aesthetic highlighting extreme simplicity and minimal decoration), which made the living space simple and relaxing by placing the TV on a low stand. However, it ultimately did not give off the upscale gallery feel.

02. A completely ‘new form’ found nowhere else in the world

We needed to solve a problem first. Samsung Electronics clearly defined the goal of developing a TV with timeless value based on its unique identity. But there was one problem: the evolution of the panel.

Panels played a pivotal role in the development of new TV designs. Every year, panels were made to adopt a slimmer, understated form even with the addition of various functions. They were also upgraded with new materials.

However, Samsung Electronics came to the conclusion that it would be difficult to deliver a timeless product if focus was to be placed on a TV body-centered design. After countless considerations of diverse body form designs, Samsung created the “frame” concept, which allowed for a unique identity regardless of what could be contained inside the frame, or the application of new technologies. The concept was also aligned with the company’s policy of making the 85S9 into an ultra-large product measuring at least 85 inches. This was in accordance with our decision to apply the 85S9 to products of various dimensions.

Samsung sought to have the TV’s elegant frame and panel serve as the center of the respective space. Rather than a home appliance, Samsung wanted the TV to become part of the interior décor as a piece of high-quality furniture that enhanced the value of the user’s home.

To achieve this, the company placed much emphasis on hiding mechanical parts so as to not detract from the 85S9’s understated design. Further, the design of the 85S9 incorporated recent technology trends of TV panels becoming slimmer and clearer, and speakers becoming thicker. For instance, four out of the total six speakers of the 85S9 were installed directly within the frame for enhanced sound quality.

With the 85S9, Samsung Electronics created a completely new form of a premium TV that embodies future technologies, emphasizes timeless value and cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

03. ‘Character’ and an ‘understated style’ as two key, uncompromised elements       

When the time came to develop the innovative idea into an actual product the first challenge was the product size. The TV model was set to 85 inches, yet the measurements of the frame alone exceeded 95 inches. Also, since the TV was more like a new device that combined a TV set and an audio system, there was much consideration about the number of parts that were included in the device.

Team members examined colors and textures by using hundreds of sample art pieces. They then worked day and night for several days to develop a complete prototype of the 85-inch TV. Once the prototype was completed, a new challenge presented itself: the team members could not move the prototype to the first floor of the building because of its large size. Therefore, they had to disassemble the product, take it to the yard and reassemble it there. Despite the late hour and rain, the team members meticulously disassembled and reassembled the prototype, reminding themselves of what the executives had said: “This is an important product that embodies Samsung Electronics’ spirit. We need to make a near-perfect prototype.”

Facility investments were also needed. The desired premium quality could not be achieved with the previous plating bath, since the frame had to be tilted and plated two or three times. The team decided to invest in a plating bath where the entire frame could be submerged. And a kind of aluminum, normally used in high-speed trains, was also used for the frame.

An unprecedented processing method was used to achieve the desired elegant exterior. Using this method, it took about three hours to process the stand of the frame. Normally, it takes just one minute to make around 60 ordinary TV stands. This gives you and idea of how much time, cost and effort are needed to make the 85S9.

During the development process, the company’s design policy of making the 85S9 itself shine through extremely understated lines and great detail was not comprised.

The greatest challenge for the team was the 85S9’s sound. The TV’s speaker capacity is 120 watts, which is about six times the speaker capacity of general TVs (20 watts). The problem was that a great number of screws were needed to prevent the TV’s vibration, which resulted from the grand sound. However, the number of screws was minimized as much as possible with the goal of creating a UHD TV with the most ideal design. The employees looked everywhere to find top-quality fabric to cover the frame and speaker in order to transmit sound. In the end, the team successfully developed a technology that resolved the vibration issue, while arranging all the screws inside of the TV set. And in sound quality tests, the 85S9 received recognition for providing sound quality as advanced as world-leading home theater manufacturers.

As far as the back of the TV, the team pursued a ‘clean back’ despite the potential complications in terms of usability and assembly. Samsung’s technologies were used to organize the air-belt, woofer, circuit board and power board in the rear, and the cables and wires were addressed with a single socket.

04. Change in all processes related to the 85S9

The development of a TV with its own unique character – and one that would create a new category – presented the need for a fundamental change in product sales, installation, customer engagement, and understanding. As a result, Samsung Electronics launched a special taskforce team comprised of specialists from design, machine development, marketing, logistics, and customer satisfaction.

The first step of the taskforce team was to develop an understanding of the potential customers of premium TVs and their environments. Team members carried out a thorough assessment of customers who purchased 75 inch TVs in Korea and abroad. They analyzed the customers’ residences, life patterns, home structure, distribution environment, and even the elevator size and stair width in their buildings.

Their assessments led to the discovery that elevators of multi-purpose buildings in Korea were not large enough to carry the 85S9. Even if a freight elevator or ladder truck were to be used to move the 85S9, it would not be easy to move the TV set inside the veranda and to turn the TV set around corners. A decision was made to adopt a shipment method in which the frame and panel are separated before the TV set is put into an elevator.

The team members also had to research the marketing space where customers would first encounter the 85S9 and what these customers expect from the TV thoroughly. Insufficient preparations would make it impossible to release the 85S9 in the market. Therefore, the taskforce is creating an ‘optimal manual’ addressing all of these questions.

Additionally, the company formulated a policy to sell the product at major premium stores in advanced markets, including the US and Europe. The stores’ display, shipment, and distribution statuses are thoroughly inspected by the team as well.

During the phase of gathering research on customers’ thoughts and environments, minor elements of the 85S9 continued to evolve. The panel movement angles and the TV’s height were slightly adjusted. In addition, quality inspection criteria for partner companies were strengthened. A decision was made to have a group of six people to ship and install the TV product.

Additionally, the sequence in which the product is unpackaged in the customer’s living room was determined. A sense of simplicity and understatement was emphasized even for the connection points, where the separated frame and panel are assembled into one. Samsung discovered that the 85S9’s target consumers in the premium segment do not want interference in their lifestyles. For example, it would not be good to have the customers see the installation personnel busily installing the product. Based on this understanding, the taskforce members conducted a detailed analysis to develop a way of assembling the connection points.

05. Game-changing innovation

Samsung Electronics has been the leader in the global market for the last seven years. The company introduced truly innovative TV designs by adding warmth and emotion, as evident in the design the Bordeaux TV (2006) and Touch Of Color (2008).

While the 85S9 underscores the company’s leadership in design and innovation, Samsung understands that succeeding in the upper premium TV market involves more than assuming market leadership by simply developing a TV that leads others in size and technology. In addition, the hearts of customers cannot be won by simply leading in trends.

Understanding this, Samsung created a new standard for premium TVs through a unique identity of its own. The company aimed to create something that consumers in the premium market are willing to invest in, offers an unprecedented level of class and character, and that has sustainable value in that it can embrace any kind of technological innovation. With the 85S9, Samsung has changed the game of the TV category.

The 85S9 will unveil unprecedented class and value at the CES2013. It will be released in 2013 targeting the premium consumer market globally.

When Samsung’s 85-inch S9 UHD TV was unveiled at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), audience members saw a unique display panel that seemingly floats over a frame, as well as the S9’s crystal-clear picture and sound that seemed too good to be true.

It was clear that the 85S9’s developers worked hard to shape the future of the UHD TV, however, the CES audience members may have asked themselves, “Is this really a marketable product? Surely it’s just a conceptual model created for the show.”

01. Samsung 85S9 comes with a proprietary up-scaling technology for tracing original contents

Lee’s guess was right. When Samsung Electronics released its 85S9 UHD TV earlier this year, neither UHD broadcasts nor content had been launched; and it was widely perceived that prospective buyers of UHD televisions would not be able to enjoy ultra-high definition content until 2015.

However, at a time when there is no broadcast standard or content designated for UHD TV, the 85-inch S9 is already using a UHD image engine. The TV includes up-scaling technology that is able to convert currently available content to UHD resolution, and thus is able to deliver sharper images. Moreover, the Samsung 85S9 UHD TV identifies the resolution of the original content and automatically adjusts the screen size.

When UHD content is available in 2015, the 85S9 will already be equipped to offer clear, realistic ultra-high resolution images for UHD content. UHD content has fewer frames per second due to the limited transmission standards of UHD signals. This causes minor screen flickering regardless of the resolution. However, the Samsung 85S9 UHD TV is the first of its kind to introduce image processing technology capable of predicting the transition from one image to the next and thus provides users with a smooth, seamless broadcast. An extraordinarily vivid resolution is one of the 85S9’s strengths.

02. Outstanding contrast leading to vivid blacks

Ultra-high definition (UHD), also known as 4K, has four times the resolution of full HD. The 85S9 UHD TV maximizes the resolution with ‘Micro Dimming Ultimate,’ a technology that divides the 85-inch screen into 1,152 zones, each of which adjusts images by maximizing the contrast, color, and detail.

Micro Dimming Ultimate technology displays crystal-clear pictures with realistic and vivid detail. In particular, the 85S9 displays much more vivid screen colors. The local dimming process scans 240 (20×12) zones across the backlight, adjusting the brightness of each zone. The process maximizes the contrast between light and dark areas by turning off each dark spot on the backlight. What results is life-like images with outstanding contrast and near perfect delivery of realistic colors and vivid blacks.

03. The perfect response to all broadcasting standards and regulations

In the case that current UHD TV models are unable to support future UHD contents due to changes in the standard, a costly UHD TV would be rendered useless since it would not be able to access UHD broadcasts, related content, and other peripherals such as BDP. Though there are ongoing discussions over the standardization of connectivity between UHD broadcast, video player, TV, and peripherals such as BDP, an international UHD standard has not yet been made available.

A sudden incapacity to play back UHD content due to altered future standards would undermine the reputation of the world’s leading TV manufacturer.

Remarkably, the developers devised a winning solution for this key concern: Samsung’s proprietary ‘Smart Evolution.’

Smart Evolution can be embedded in Samsung’s Smart TV and serves to update all software and hardware instantly, including CPU and GPU. Thanks to Smart Evolution, the S9 has become the world’s only UHD TV able to respond to future amended UHD standards, and thus provides its consumers with a timeless viewing experience

Samsung’s Smart Evolution functionality not only enables users to enjoy a variety of UHD content regardless of which standards are imposed, but the technology is compatible with previous Smart TV models so users can enjoy up to date functionalities and performance. The existing UHD TV network is also utilized to prevent consumer inconvenience.

04. The evolution of technologies; evolution of the television

Due to the lack of UHD contents and panels, the developers of the 85S9 UHD TV faced a number of challenges when testing their new product and even went as far as developing a proprietary codec to convert original video to UHD format. Needless to say, Samsung has taken steps to anticipate and respond to development requirements.

The simultaneous evolution of technology and television is in line with the “Timeless” value that the Samsung 85S9 UHD TV pursues. The 85S9 is set to evolve alongside Samsung’s technological prowess in order to maintain its unique identity and simultaneously offer customers an exceptional viewing experience far into the future.

Samsung’s Design Story

Samsung is known around the world for products with a sharp, unique design, but sometimes it’s easy to forget how much work goes into the design phase. Dennis Miloseski, head of design studio, Samsung Design America, shares how to think behind design, exciting new design strategies, and the principle behind Samsung’s design mantra “Make It Meaningful.”

Video Discovery

On Samsung Tomorrow TV, Tae Jin Kang, senior vice president, MSC, Samsung Electronics explains about video discovery, which takes contents and videos and aggregate across all devices for a seamless easy to-use interface. Users can discover contents easily and have them readily available. For example, TV channels are already set up automatically for the users, so users can simply click what content they want on the provided electronic program guide.  Kang explains how the original design idea was inspired by his wife. Product Innovation Team 

Yoon C. Lee, vice president, PIT, Samsung Electronics, talks about how PIT approaches innovation differently.

Yoon explains the difference that Samsung brings to the process, which is the concept of repeatability in innovation, even though it’s subjective and ‘people dependent’. To get a better understanding, take a look at this video detailing more about the PIT process.

So in answer to the question “What was hot at CES 2013?”, Samsung delivered some red-hot innovation, and the rest of 2013 looks to be even hotter!

Samsung Electronics, especially, overwhelmed the visitors with its largest exhibition of new innovative products. While octa-core processors and flexible displays stormed the Venetian with Samsung’s own Dr. Stephen Woo giving a Keynote Speech, it was Samsung’s TVs that stole the show at the exhibition. The S9000 110-inch UHD TV, the world’s largest commercial Ultra High Definition TV; the Curved OLED TV; and the Smart Hub, a unique content platform with various contents, live TV broadcasts, VOD, apps, internet and such, caught the eyes of the visitors.

Among the Samsung products, the spotlight was on the Smart TV. To provide more concrete information to the consumers, a couple of campaigns were launched prior to and during CES.

First Look Campaign

On January 7, a day before CES 2013, the First Look Campaign was launched to introduce Samsung’s Smart TV’s new technology and innovations. This campaign served to increase the expectations of visitors before unveiling the new innovative products at this CES.

Discover & Win Livestream

The other campaign was called “Discover & Win Livestream,” which was held during CES. iJustine, a top social media power, broadcasted the CES live on Livestream, showing behind the scenes and the actual site of CES in detail and introducing Samsung’s new innovative products. This media also hosted this campaign, which participants could win a Samsung Smart TV by guessing the key words or codes that was given out during the Livestream and posting them on www.facebook.com/SamsungTV.

All the campaigns served to highlight Samsung’s newest and celebrated products, as well as to energize the crowd at CES!  Hope to see you soon at CES 2014.

The Lounge was home to busy bloggers striving to get news to the public ASAP while an exclusive production of over 600 minutes was streamed live over the 4 day stretch straight from the Studio. Let’s take a minute to look back at the action.

Smart Lounge & Studio

The SMART Lounge was operated as a home base for IT/Tech media editors and bloggers to network and simply get all their work done! In the corners, also in operation this year, was a public studio to allow reporters and bloggers to hold their own video-filming, live streaming, interviews, or to take hands-on video.

Press Conference & Special Broadcasting

Samsung Tomorrow TV was a more ‘fun’ event at CES 2013 and many people were interested in watching to see what was on. Samsung Tomorrow broadcasted Dr. Stephen Woo’s Keynote, Samsung’s Press Conference, and a series of Samsung Tomorrow TV CES Specials live, and those videos are still available if you want to watch them again – just check out Samsung Tomorrow’s coverage of CES on our site.

Furthermore, during the keynote speech of Dr Stephen Woo, President of Device Solutions Business, Samsung showed off Exynos 5 Octa, an OCTA-CORE processor and a Flexible OLED prototype. It was quite a hot issue!

Press Conference 

At the Press Conference, Samsung’s new products were introduced with short video clips of celebrities including famous artist Ne-Yo and actor Vincent Piazza.

Samsung Tomorrow TV @CES2013 Special

Samsung programmed Samsung Tomorrow TV with five different specialties including, What’s Trending, What’s Hot, From the Floor, Smart Lounge, and Daily Wrap Up. In the What’s Trending corner, the latest products and recent trends were introduced. In the What’s Hot corner, Samsung Tomorrow TV introduced its hottest products along with behind-the-scenes footages of how those products came to be. We also met up with tech enthusiasts and interviewed them. Booth tours and quick events such as on-the-spot quizzes could be seen on From the Floor. Short interviews with bloggers were held at Smart Lounge and the Daily Wrap Up summarized all the day’s big news.

It was quite a treat for Samsung Tomorrow TV to host well-known world-famous celebrities.  Brightening our screen were celebrities likeWill.i.am, Snookie, Xzibit, Nick Cannon, and Russell Simmons ! Check them out inside the Samsung Smart Studio!

Behind the Scenes

Well, to wrap up CES 2013, we wanted to share with you all the photos we got from the inside.  We hope the photo tour will make you feel like you were right there with us at CES 2013!

The video opens with a cameraman and other workers setting up a shoot for the Eco Bubble washing machine, connecting a pipe from a stream into the back of the Eco Bubble washer. So far, so good.  Without warning, a large dark brown bear lumbers out of the forest, slowly moving in their direction.

The bear wanders through the camp and hovers around the Eco Bubble Washer. Will the bear destroy the crew’s equipment and the Washer too?  Will he go on a rampage, leaving the camp decimated?

The bear reaches up, and…takes off his coat.  Apparently it is time to do a little housework.

While the Eco Bubble works on washing his coat in a refreshing cold water wash, the bear takes the chance to catch up on world news, practice his guitar skills, get some candid shots with the washer, and of course dance.

It’s done! And clean!

Satisfied, the bear throws on his freshly cleaned coat.  Even with cold water, the difference is quite noticeable…

That was one dirty polar bear!

Advanced Technology Enables Cooler Water Temperatures to Deliver Better Energy Efficiency and Fabric Care 

Nothing is harder on clothes than putting them through the wash. The combination of spinning and the use of hot water have long been necessary evils to getting clothes clean but result in quicker fabric deterioration and increased energy consumption. Samsung’s new Eco Bubble Washer looks to change all that with cool wash Eco Bubble technology.

This technology enlists a unique bubble generator that begins working as a normal cycle begins. Air and water are pulled in to generate bubbles, dissolving and activating the detergent, which penetrate faster and more evenly throughout the wash load. The Eco Bubble bubbles get to work, bringing detergent into contact with each fiber in the load to provide a more powerful cleaning solution at significantly lower wash temperatures, saving energy on every load.

Delivering Thoughtful Design that Adds Convenience and Complements in Any Home

The front-load, door design features deep transparency and pure color of the Crystal Gloss design, providing a clean image and elegant exterior that optimally reflects the washing performance of the Eco Bubble technology. Samsung Electronics redefined the story of consumer electronics from its perspective beneath the surface of mobile devices at the 2013 International CES keynote address.

Dr. Stephen Woo, the president of System LSI Business of Device Solutions Division of Samsung Electronics, shared the company’s vision of “Mobilizing Possibility,” highlighting the role of components as the engine behind innovation across the mobile landscape. The keynote event illustrated the possibilities that Samsung envisions offering through its component solutions, and introduced new products that will herald such expectations.

Guests from partnering companies, such as Warren East, the Chief Executive Officer of ARM; Eric Rudder, the Chief technical Strategy Officer of Microsoft; Trevor Schick, the Senior Vice President of Enterprise Group Supply Chain Procurement of HP; and Glenn Roland, the Vice President and Head of New Platforms and OEM of EA, also took part in the event, echoing Samsung’s mission to offer breakthrough products and create shared value (CSV) for both manufacturers and end-users.

Woo opened by presenting Samsung’s goal for Mobilizing Possibility that takes big ideas off the drawing board and brings them to life for end-users, especially in the areas of processing performance, energy-efficient memory solutions and display technology. He emphasized that the limitless possibilities presented by consumer electronics will be based on component innovations by the company.

Processing Power

The first of Samsung’s new products announced at the keynote was the Exynos 5 Octa, the world’s first mobile application processor to implement the ARM big.LITTLE processing technology based on the Cortex-A15 CPU. Following the Exynos 5 Dual, which is already on board of market-leading products such as the Google Chromebook and Nexus 10, the successor is the newest addition to the Exynos family of application processors.

To expand on the big.LITTLE concept, Warren East joined Woo on stage and introduced the new technology that has just become available in silicon through the Exynos 5 Octa. Housing a total of eight cores to draw from—four powerful Cortex-A15 processors to handle processing-intense tasks along with four additional Cortex-A7 cores for lighter workloads—the application processor offers maximum performance and up to 70 percent higher energy efficiency compared to the previous quad-core Exynos.

Moreover, Glenn Roland helped Woo demonstrate the processing power of the Exynos 5 Octa by showing off one of EA’s latest 3D racing games, Need for Speed Most Wanted. Atop the reference device, the application processor delivered an elevated real-life gaming experience within the mobile platform, rendering stunning graphics performance and real-time response speed.

Green Memory Capabilities

As advanced processing power on mobile devices accelerates easier data creation by the masses, the mobile experience will increasingly become more dependent upon datacenters largely responsible for the proliferating data traffic. Growing in size and capacity, IT systems face challenges both in performance and power savings to secure sustainability moving forward. Memory devices, the main products for servers that make up these datacenters, can deliver substantial gains by adopting cutting-edge technology available from Samsung.

Woo pointed out that managing the power consumption in these datacenters have become crucial and that Samsung’s green memory solutions with Solid State Drives (SSD) and advanced Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) are addressing this key issue with their powerful, yet energy-efficient processing capabilities. Compared to traditional datacenters that incorporate Hard Disk Drives (HDD), server and storage solutions equipped with green memory pull the data processing speeds up six-fold while operating with 26 percent less electricity.

Display Technology

As components on the surface that interact directly with users, display solutions bring the technology advancements to life and make them tangible through the device interface. Woo presented the future possibilities of Samsung’s displays along with Brian Berkeley, the Senior Vice President of Samsung Display., While crystal-clear picture qualities become a reality, the two Samsung speakers were pleased to share that the innovations do not sacrifice energy efficiency.

Woo and Berkeley described the 10.1” Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) panel that is currently adopted by the Nexus 10. With a 2560×1600 resolution and 300 pixels per inch (PPI), the panel renders stunning picture qualities while consuming only 75 percent of the energy used in previous display solutions.

Using Samsung’s energy-efficient green LCD technology, the company is currently developing a 10.1” model that would lower power consumption even further by 25 percent, while offering equal resolution qualities as its predecessor.

Prototypes and real-life scenarios for Samsung’s line of flexible organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays were also showcased, promising various mobile application opportunities for consumer electronics manufacturers. Dubbed “YOUM,” the flexible display line-up uses extremely thin plastic instead of glass, making it bendable and virtually “unbreakable.” Berkeley featured a smartphone prototype equipped with a curved edge that showed contiguous content along the side of the device.

One of Samsung’s partners that bring the company’s state-of-the-art components together is Microsoft, adding more layers of value to the final product with its software solutions, devices and services. Eric Rudder, chief technical strategy officer, Microsoft, took the complete ATIV family of devices as an example through which Samsung’s component solutions and Windows 8 together present new potential in user interfaces. Rudder reported that Microsoft Research has been continuing its work on next-generation display technologies, enabling new modes of human-computer interaction.

Possibility for All

Creating a better world with its resources is one of Samsung’s core values. Samsung’s flagship corporate social responsibility initiative, Samsung Hope for Children, was launched in this spirit, through which the company provides its products, expertise and financial support to tackle the needs of children around the world for education and healthcare. Samsung Electronics announced its expanded line-up of premium home appliances for the kitchen at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) from January 8^th to 11^th, 2013. Samsung, the company that revolutionized the home appliance category with the four-door refrigerator and a freestanding range with the FlexDuo oven, is once again redefining the appliance experience in the kitchen with new refrigerator and range form factors that bring unmatched ease of use, convenience, organization and style to the kitchen.

The Home Entertainer’s Ultimate Refrigerator

The 32 cu. ft. capacity Samsung T9000 Four-Door Refrigerator represents the next evolution in refrigerator design, with a new form factor that delivers the most fresh food storage in its class.  This sleek refrigerator features a 19.4 cu. ft. capacity French Door refrigerator compartment on top, and a 6.1 cu. ft. compartment on the lower right side, providing an extraordinary 25.5 cu. ft. of fresh food storage.  The lower right compartment can also be used as a freezer if desired, and is complemented by a 6.1 cu. ft. freezer on the left side in this unique and versatile design. First-of-their-Kind Flexible Cooking Solutions

For premium kitchens and high-end renovations, the beautiful and sleek Samsung NE58F9710SR is the first-ever 30” slide-in range with an oven cavity that can be split into two separate compartments, making the cooking experience easier, more efficient and more convenient than ever before. Technologically inspired by Samsung’s highly successful FlexDuo Oven, the NE58F9710SR offers new kinds of flexible cooking options that enable families to use the full large 5.8 cu. ft. capacity oven cavity for larger dishes like holiday turkeys, or they can use the Smart Divider to divide the oven into 2.4 cu. ft. and 3.3 cu. ft. top and bottom compartments for smaller items like dinner and dessert. This allows consumers to cook multiple dishes at two different temperatures at the same time with no noticeable aroma transfer. The NE58F9710SR Slide-in range with FlexDuo Oven will be available in June 2013 for an MSRP of $2,399.

Flexible cooking options don’t stop there. The Samsung NE597N0PBSR Induction Range – a 2013 CES Innovations Award Honoree – is the first-ever 30” freestanding electric range to feature the FlexCook Zone and Samsung Boil Alert, as well as SteamQuick technology. The FlexCook Zone acts as a full-length bridge element, letting consumers cook large pots and pans across one large induction element without having to worry about incomplete heat distribution.  When the bridge element is not in use, it can be used as two separate 9” elements.  The NE597N0PBSR Induction Range also features intuitive Samsung Boil Alert technology, which senses small vibrations as water begins to heat up. Creating the Ultimate Lean Back Experience

Samsung opened a new world of possibilities in home entertainment this year, introducing a full line up of larger screen TVs, including its first 85” Ultra High Definition TV (UHD TV) and its flagship Smart TV, the F8000 LED TV. Building on its already extensive content offering and Smart TV platform leadership, Samsung also introduced the most personalized TV viewing experience ever created: S-Recommendation with Voice Interaction technologies.

For the first time at CES, Samsung unveiled its new UHD TV with a large screen size. Blending technology and craftsmanship to create a ‘Timeless Gallery Design,’ Samsung’s UHD TV offers four times the pixels available on existing 1080p resolution, to deliver greater detail, unmatched clarity and an immersive, vivid picture quality. It also provides an audio experience to match its screen excellence; 120-watt array speakers are seamlessly built into the frame of the television.

Offering a whole new world of viewing experience, using content available today, the UHD TV features an up-scaling algorithm that is capable of up-converting HD and Full HD content to UHD resolution.

Samsung also introduced its new flagship F8000 LED TV, the first Samsung television to feature a quad-core processor. Available in sizes up to 75”, the F8000 features an ultra-thin profile, a quarter-inch thick bezel and a half-moon shaped Arc stand.

Samsung is the first TV brand to offer support for the new high compression video codec, HEVC, which delivers double the video quality over the same bandwidth.

Introducing the next Evolution in Televisions

Each of Samsung’s newest televisions provides a whole new world of possibilities in search, navigation and control. Samsung’s S-Recommendation with Voice Interaction technology is a personal guide to discovering new and preferred content on Samsung Smart TVs.

Analyzing a user’s viewing history and the popularity and release dates of TV programs, S-Recommendation will create a personalized menu of on-air, on-demand and app content for each viewer.

Samsung’s improved Voice Interaction technology will change what people think is possible from a television; it is now capable of understanding full sentences and natural language. Coupled with S-Recommendation, viewers can ask the Smart TV for movie and TV show suggestions or request films that feature specific actors or actresses. Searches aggregate relevant results from all available on-air, on-demand or app services.

This advanced user experience has been expanded to smartphones and tablets, thanks to Samsung’s leadership in connectivity. Viewers can search and schedule content on a tablet, view content remotely or mirror the Smart TV on a tablet to take the content with them around the home.

Samsung’s new Smart Hub intelligently organizes a viewer’s content into clear, intuitive menu pages. Drawing on Samsung’s mobile leadership, the navigation experience is reminiscent of that found on its smartphones. The five pages include: On TV; Movies & TV Shows; Photos, Videos & Music; Social; Apps.

Additionally, Samsung delivered on its 2012 CES promise of bringing the next evolution of TVs with the introduction of its 2013 Evolution Kit. By simply adding the Evolution Kit to a Samsung Smart TV, users can have access to the latest Samsung Smart TV offerings. Owners of compatible TVs will be able to benefit from S-Recommendation with Voice Interaction, the new Smart Hub, as well as the quad core support of the 2013 range.

Creating Smarter, Connected Homes

Samsung’s latest home appliance products deliver unrivalled convenience, ease of use and organization for consumers. The new Samsung T9000 LCD Refrigerator allows users to adjust the freezer and fridge space based on need, while the new Samsung Top Loader Washing Machine, WA50F, provides an extremely large capacity in its category.

This year, Samsung has redefined the French door refrigerator category, making kitchens smarter and more convenient, as well as offering clever ways to keep organized. With a 32 cu. ft. capacity, the Samsung T9000 LCD Refrigerator offers large storage space for consumers. Capturing Images in Every Moment

Samsung is staying true to its SMART CAMERA vision, delivering the latest and greatest camera technology and driving change in the digital imaging landscape. As the newest addition to its NX-range, the NX300 blends exceptional image quality and capture capabilities with increased speed and shot control.

The NX300 is complemented by the Samsung’s NX 45mm F1.8 2D/3D lens, the first one-lens 3D system for a consumer camera, capable of capturing both still pictures and full 1080p HD video. This new lens opens up an exciting world of 3D imaging possibilities and makes the Samsung NX Series the only interchangeable lens camera supporting both 3D still and 3D movie.

Samsung’s PC line-up for CES consists of two new devices that combine powerful performance with design excellence. The powerful new Series 7 Chronos and the portable Series 7 Ultra Notebook are equipped to handle both work and entertainment applications.

The new Series 7 Chronos delivers a professional performance in a thinner and lighter form factor, with a quad-core performance, as well as a new software solution called RAMaccelerator, which provides up to a 150 percent increase in speed for browsing and running apps, to act as a true desktop replacement. Samsung TecTiles Take Over Las Vegas

Samsung is also helping people explore a world of possibilities while in Las Vegas. The company has partnered with Caesars Entertainment to install more than 4,500 interactive Samsung TecTiles (NFC tags) throughout eight of its world-renowned hotels and casinos in Las Vegas. These TecTiles are designed to provide consumers with a virtual concierge service, offering shortcuts to gaming stats and playing tips, restaurant hours and reservations, show times and video clips, and shopping hours and discounts.

Empowering the B2B Market

Samsung also announced the results of its joint study with research leaders IDG regarding the attitudes of IT executives and consumers toward ‘bring-your-own-device (BYOD)’ to work policies. The results revealed that an overwhelming majority of IT executives believe that BYOD programs will become standard in business within the next two years, and consumers expect the mobile device to be the primary computing device for work within five years. 

Understanding that the success of such BYOD programs depends on whether hardware and software providers can address the security concerns of IT executives, Samsung has launched its Samsung For Enterprise (SaFE) program, which is comprised of security standards that will help companies to find mobile devices that are safe to use. SaFE devices provide immediate business benefits such as advanced data features and device-based verification.

SaFE is Samsung’s commitment to the B2B market. It’s a comprehensive suite of security standards, apps, on-device encryption, VPNs and mobile device management solutions. With the development of SaFE, Samsung is simplifying mobile device administration and removing concerns about the fragmentation of the Android platform.

The Samsung UHD S9 received a CES Best of Innovation award, while three Smart TVs – the F9500 OLED TV, F8000 Smart LED TV and F7500 Smart LED TV – were named as 2013 CES Design and Engineering honorees.

Samsung’s human TV experience enhances personalized, viewing choices

Samsung’s new S-Recommendation technology enables the discovery of personalized content based on previous viewings and user ratings. Available on Samsung 2013 Smart TVs, home theater and Blu-ray players, S-Recommendation checks preferred content across various services including broadcast TV, streaming video on demand content, applications, social content and locally-stored content from personal devices to ensure there is always something to watch.

Samsung Smart Hub has also been redesigned to simplify the process of discovery for consumers. Apps and content are arranged into five dynamic panels with an easy-to-navigate interface and dynamic thumbnails for instant previews.

In 2012, Samsung launched the industry’s first TVs with voice and gesture controls. This year, Samsung is giving consumers a more instinctive and intuitive way to navigate and control the Smart TVs.

Samsung’s advanced Smart Interaction utilizes powerful algorithms to ensure even more accurate facial recognition, voice and motion controls. With enhanced Voice Interaction, consumers can use everyday language –to command the TV. Viewers can also ask their TV to search for content currently available by actor, title or genre and it will provide recommendations.

Gesture Control now recognizes more natural movements, with two-handed gestures and better viewing environment flexibility. Viewers can pinch to zoom, or use a swipe motion to easily navigate between Smart Hub panels. 

Setting up a home entertainment network between compatible devices is easy with Samsung’s AllShare. Once consumers have connected their Samsung Smart TVs to other devices in the same wireless network using built-in wireless connectivity features, they can easily send and receive images and audio between devices.

Introducing the WB250F

Samsung Electronics announced the expansion of its digital audio line-up with new devices that easily turn any home entertainment setup into an optimal sound environment. The company’s 2013 AV products feature a number of wireless connectivity enhancements, including the industry’s first soundbar that can connect with a TV using wireless Bluetooth technology.

As testament to Samsung’s leadership in innovation, design and engineering, the Samsung HW-F750 Soundbar and Samsung BD-F7500 Smart Blu-ray Player have each been awarded a 2013 CES innovation award. Samsung Electronics announced the launch of the NX300, the new flagship model in its successful NX series. The NX300 once again raises the bar for compact system cameras (CSC), delivering an outstanding combination of features, functionality and style for perfect shooting in every moment. Samsung also announced the new NX 45mm F1.8 2D/3D lens, the first one-lens 3D system capable of capturing both still images and full HD movies in perfect 3D quality.

Perfect shooting

  CCCCCentral to the NX300’s outstanding imaging performance is its brand new 20.3 Megapixel APS-CMOS sensor, capable of capturing high quality detailed. Images boast sharp, life-like colors and are crisp and clear in all light conditions. Easy usability and stylish retro design

Instant sharing through enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity

The NX300’s Wi-Fi connectivity of SMART CAMERA allows users to share their cherished photos instantly and securely between their camera and smartphone (or tablet). To connect a smartphone to the camera, users simply need to download the Samsung SMART CAMERA App., which is available for both Android and iOS based application markets, onto their smartphone or tablet and follow the easy steps to create a secure connection with the camera. Samsung Electronics announced that it will be releasing the Smart TV SDK (Software Development Kit) 4.0 at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) from January 8^th to 11^th, 2013. The Smart TV SDK will allow Smart TV software development on Linux and Mac, in addition to Windows O/S.

Up till now, Samsung’s Smart TV software development only supported Windows O/S. However, the new SDK 4.0 allows for the development of Smart TV software on Linux and Mac systems. This is expected to lead to active development of Smart TV software in some areas where non-Windows O/S are widely used.

Samsung is the first in the TV industry to provide a local cloud development environment. This environment enables the development of content based on connection between web services by utilizing an open API (Application Programming Interface).

Moreover, Smart TV SDK 4.0 provides a local cloud development environment that allows developers who use the Mac O/S to team up with other developers who use Windows O/S. As a result, many developers can engage in a team effort, resulting in greater software development efficiency and reduced costs.

By expanding and supporting HTML5 in the Smart TV SDK 4.0, a standard programming language, Samsung has laid the foundation for many software developers to easily take part in development of Smart TV applications.

With HTML5, Samsung has been able to build an integrated environment that supports the development of convergence applications. This enables Samsung’s Smart TVs to interact and communicate with external devices.

And to promote the active development of Smart TV software through Samsung’s Smart Interaction function, the company strengthened the voice and gesture recognition functions on its Smart TVs.

Samsung Electronics debuted two new additions to its lineup of premium monitors, putting professional-grade picture quality within reach for professional and consumer audiences alike. The innovative Series 7 SC770 Touch Monitor comes optimized for Windows 8, while the Series 7 SC750 features a slim, ergonomic design and premium picture quality. Series 7 Touch (SC770): Touch-Sensitive Monitor

Series7 (SC750): Ergonomic Design

The Series 7 SC750 monitor sports a slim, ergonomic design that is capable of a 90-degree pivot for enhanced convenience to users. It is optimized for surfing the web and viewing documents in both landscape and portrait modes.

The monitor’s sleek stand precisely positions the screen at a comfortable eye-level without the need for a support fixture and its cylinder-shaped metal stand accentuates the beauty of the slim monitor. Series 9 (SB970): Professionally Pre-Calibrated Monitor

First released in the second half of 2012 to the U.S. market, Samsung’s award-winning Series 9 monitor will also be on display at CES. Offering unparalleled picture quality and life-like color accuracy, each individual monitor is individually hand-tuned by technicians before it is shipped. In addition, a built-in color calibration engine enables users to adjust the uniformity, gamma and white balance of the display using Samsung’s proprietary Natural Color Expert technology, resulting in the most accurate color possible.

The Series 9 monitor also utilizes a PLS (Plane Line Switching) panel and Wide-Quad high-definition resolution (WQHD), delivering four times more detail than traditional HD. The TVs are gathering around a large venue which reminds of CES and the TVs are staring in the same direction. The video ends there with a large object on display covered by a white veil.

The large object will provoke curiosity as it is expected to be a newest innovative TV that Samsung is going to unveil at CES 2013.

Meanwhile, Samsung also released CES teaser video last year and the video received the Platinum Marcom Award in November, a very prestigious honor in marketing industry. The video was highly praised as it aroused curiosity on future Smart TV in a novel way with the well-made images.

Samsung Electronics will introduce its all-new ‘Smart Hub’ at CES 2013, the largest home electronics exhibition in the world, which will be held in Las Vegas this upcoming January 8^th.

Smart Hub is a unique content platform for Samsung Smart TV.   This new Smart Hub has an updated design of the initial screen for the users to enjoy not only live broadcasts but also a variety of contents such as movies, apps, and personal photos easily and conveniently on one screen.

In 2013, users can look to Smart Hub for a more intuitive experience with various contents, live TV broadcasts, VOD, apps, internet and such.  All this content will be available on one screen divided into five sections, each holding a spot for a different category.

The five categories are ‘On TV’ for live TV, ‘Movies & TV Shows’ based on VOD contents, ‘Apps’ for various applications, ‘Social’ for SNS contents sharing function, ‘ Photos, Videos & Music’ for personal contents.

One of the most anticipated features is the “Flipping” function that allows you to browse through the five screens with Samsung’s unique motion control function.  It might remind you of flipping through the pages of a book, and it provides you an easy way to select your program of choice more easily and with more fun.  Just by accessing Smart Hub, you can enjoy all the contents of live TV, movie, internet, and games all in one place.
