What do you consider important when watching the Olympic Games on TV? Vivid picture and sound quality on your TV would be able to provide you a lifelike experience just as if you were onsite at the Games. The artificial intelligence (AI) technology which Samsung Electronics recently unveiled at CES 2018 promises to deliver this kind of experience, with picture quality nearly the equivalent of 8K (7,680 × 4,320) resolution, as well as optimized sound, for real-time and other video content.

The new AI technology achieves close to 8K resolution and enhanced sound quality by aligning with the unique characteristics of the specific content, a step up from typical upscaling technology used to improve image quality. So how exactly does it work? Let’s take a closer look.

Enjoy any content in 8K through Machine Learning

The world’s first 8K AI Technology that realizes a definition nearly the equivalent of 8K is based on Machine Learning. Computers or smartphones run according to directive values that humans enter. In contrast, Machine Learning refers to the way AI learns certain patterns and gives optimized answers based on various examples.

Samsung’s Machine Learning Super Resolution (MLSR) utilizes AI technology to compare low and high-quality versions of the same content to learn the technological differences between the two and form a vast database. It analyzes millions of pieces of video content and finds a correlation. Based on its analysis, it can select the optimum filters that support brightness, the level of blackness, spread and other errors from all inputs, and transform low-definition content to close to 8K high definition.

The input content is recognized as ‘real-time’ based on a frame and is enhanced by scenes, which makes it possible to upgrade image and sound quality immediately, regardless of whether the video source is live streaming or OTT (Over The Top).

8K picture quality through AI, what’s the difference?

Other upscaling techniques require human input to compare low-resolution and high-resolution scenes and find ways to reconstruct them. However, Samsung’s AI Technology enables it to self-study millions of images on its own using MLSR, allowing much-improved accuracy compared to conventional technologies.

There are three elements to improving picture quality on displays. First is ‘Detail Creation’ that sharpens the detail of expression and improves the texture to areas with low definition that have become blurry after compressing the file. Second, ‘Edge Restoration’ defines the edges of text, people or objects in a video, moving pixels on the borders to thin them down to increase legibility and visibility. For example, if text context is spreaded along the edges, the video will be adjusted around the text for clarity. In a video that shows the moon, Edge Restoration improves details of the moon’s shadow and enhances the darkness of the background for a clear distinction. Lastly, ‘Noise Reduction’ gets rid of static noises generated during high compression or recompression of files. In order to transmit an image, it is necessary to compress the image. In this process, various ‘noises’ such as a jiggling point or a squared dot can be effectively removed according to the image characteristics.

AI delivers immersive sound effects

When watching dramas or movies, realistic, immersive sounds are as important as picture quality. Samsung’s AI technology not only transforms low-definition into high-definition, but also optimizes the sound quality of content.

Conventional TVs provide multiple view settings such as movie mode and sports mode according to the genre of content. With Samsung’s new AI technology, content can be automatically analyzed by characterizing scenes to provide optimum sounds.

For example, let’s say you were watching a movie that includes musical performances. AI technology can highlight the music in a way that allows you to experience the sound as the actual characters would. When the crowd applauds after the performance is over, you would hear the clapping the same way as if you were in the crowd in the movie. When characters are speaking, AI adjusts the sound to make sure the lines are communicated clearly.

Imagine you were watching a relay broadcast of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics that started last week. AI will enhance the voice of the announcer so that you don’t miss who’s up next. When a game has started, AI will increase the background sound to deliver the liveliness of the actual game. With this tailored sound adjustment scene by scene, audiences can enjoy the best sound quality for any genre of content.

Samsung developers plan to continue to improve sound quality according to the preferences of individual viewers so that each viewer can enjoy the best TV viewing experience, right for them. Because volume patterns differ for every user, and the viewing environment can change according to the time of day and other factors, the sound will be accordingly adjusted and optimized to provide the most enjoyable experience to each individual viewer.

Why does 8K AI technology matter?

As customer needs for high-definition TVs and content increases, some terrestrial broadcasting stations have committed to working towards UHD delivery, and various IPTV and cable channels have initiated 4K UHD (3,840 × 2,160) services. However, even as the TV industry begins to launch 8K (7,680 × 4,320) TVs, the reality is that 4K content is, as of yet, still not fully utilized in homes.

In this context, Samsung has proposed a new direction for TV technology by combining 8K UHD display technology and premiere content through AI. Samsung has developed an AI algorithm that automatically enhances picture quality to solve the problem of limited high-quality content. As example, AI technology plays a key role in the 85-inch 8K QLED TV technology that Samsung introduced at CES 2018.

Samsung will begin the process of applying AI technology to its 8K QLED TVs from the second half of this year, and viewers will soon be able to enjoy UHD quality video that is nearly 8K in resolution and delivers optimized sound for any type of content. A genuine 8K era is now on the horizon, and Samsung will continue to lead the way.

Josh Ives, VP of Customer Experience, and Jenni Chun, Manager of Corporate Regulatory & Environmental Affairs, both of Samsung Electronics America, accept the 2017 Cutting Edge Champion Award and Gold Tier Award for the company’s continued sustainability efforts. Presenting the awards was Barnes Johnson, Director of the EPA Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery.

The Galaxy Upcycling program allows Galaxy phone owners to retrofit the hardware and software of antiquated, used Galaxy phones into new technology products such as closed circuit TVs, gaming consoles, and IoT devices. The program puts the tools for transforming devices into new technology in consumers’ hands by providing them with necessary software changes and suggested hardware changes that enable new functionality. The program was created from the company’s innovation hub, C-Lab; and will launch in 2018. The Cutting Edge Champion Award was presented to Samsung for the Galaxy Upcycling program’s innovative and environmentally responsible ways to use a product’s materials throughout its entire life cycle. Samsung has been the exclusive honoree of the Cutting Edge Champion Award since the award’s inception in 2017.

“In an effort to curb e-waste and extend the lifecycle of our existing technology, we introduced the Galaxy Upcycling program which repurposes technology resources into new devices,” said Michael Lawder, Senior Vice President of Customer Care at Samsung Electronics America. “We’re honored to receive the Cutting Edge Champion Award for this program and our efforts to extend a products’ life-cycle by repurposing its functionality.”

The second distinction was given to Samsung for the company’s long-term commitment to the proper recycling of e-waste in the U.S. In 2016, the company’s electronics recycling program collected and responsibly recycled over 118 million pounds of e-waste in the U.S., which made it one of the world’s biggest collectors of e-waste. Samsung is being recognized in this category for the fourth year in a row.

“Samsung’s creative reinvention of old electronics through their unique upcycling program is environmental ingenuity at its finest,” said EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt. “I commend Samsung for their innovative efforts to turn old smartphones into new technology products, and I encourage others to follow their lead.”

The awards were presented today in Las Vegas at a ceremony during CES 2018.

These days, working parents are constantly looking for ways to spend more quality time with their loved ones – and that’s where Samsung Electronics’ new Family Hub comes in.

Family Hub not only streamlines food management like meal prep and storage, but also offers families simple ways to strengthen their connections and keep their household running smoothly.

Family Hub sits at the center of a wide ecosystem of Samsung products and solutions that make it easy for households to enjoy the benefits of a seamlessly connected lifestyle. And now, thanks to the refrigerators’ SmartThings integration and enhanced Bixby support, taking advantage of Family Hub’s personalized approach to connected living is even easier.

Let’s take a look at a few ways that Family Hub helps modern families simplify daily life.

Yoon Lee (left), Senior Vice President of Samsung Electronics America, and Joe Stinziano, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics America, demo Family Hub’s Morning Brief function during Samsung’s CES 2018 press conference.

In the Morning

Because the new Family Hub features Samsung’s intelligent voice assistant, Bixby, now, when you want to get things done, all you have to do is say the word. A great example is the Morning Brief function, which makes managing family schedules and activities a whole lot easier.

Family members can start off their day by simply saying, “Hi, Bixby. What’s new today?”, and Family Hub will compile a brief that includes the information they need – such as the day’s news, weather, and their personal schedule – for quick and easy consumption. Because Family Hub can recognize each family member by voice, everyone gets the info that’s relevant to them.

At the Office

Family Hub’s Memo app allows family members to draw or type messages and record voice notes to send from their smartphones to the Family Hub, and vice versa. Even kids without smartphones are able to send their parents messages through the smart refrigerator.

Think of the app as a sort of digital family bulletin board that family members can post to from anywhere. So, for example, if you’re rushing to the office after a weekend that’s left the house in need of some sprucing up, you can update the kids’ chore list while you make your way to your desk.

Family Hub’s Memo app allows users to easily post reminders, voice recordings, handwritten notes and personalized live messages, like this one.

On the Way Home

Family Hub has always offered intuitive tools that make it easy for families to plan and prepare great meals. These include features like the View Inside app, which simplifies stopping by the store after work to buy ingredients for dinner by allowing you to scan the content of your fridge remotely, to ensure that you pick up just what you need.

And if by the time you get home you’re still not quite sure what to cook, Family Hub can also offer customized recipe suggestions based on your family members’ dietary constraints and much more.

On Weekends

Family Hub’s SmartThings integration makes household chores like vacuuming a breeze, allowing you to easily control a wide range of connected devices.

The new Family Hub also gives households the ability to seamlessly monitor and control, via a single app, the wide and ever-growing range of products and services that are compatible with the SmartThings IoT platform.

When catching up on rest on the weekend, families can utilize the refrigerator’s SmartThings support to take the hassle out of household tasks. With a simple tap of their Family Hub’s screen, users may start their vacuum, adjust their thermostat, and do much more.

You can even use Family Hub to help keep an eye on the little ones, making it easy to check on a sleeping baby in another room; see who’s at the door when the doorbell rings, using the Ring app; and, when you’re ready for bed, turn off all the lights with a tap.

These are just a few of the ways that Family Hub helps modern families simplify daily life. Family Hub is a vital part of Samsung’s vision for connected living – a vision that’s not reflective of some far-off future, but ready to be plugged in to consumers’ homes right now.

Samsung’s CES 2018 booth, also known as “Samsung City”, showcases next-generation technologies that will transform users’ lives in the office and at home. One of the booth’s most eye-catching displays of innovation was made possible by Samsung’s new IF Series LED signage. Standing 32 meters wide and 7.8 meters high, and composed of a total of 4,926 (480 x 540 x 65mm) modules, the booth’s can’t-miss façade displays snapshots of an immersive, connected future that encapsulate Samsung’s life-simplifying “Intelligence of Things” vision.

As the industry’s first HDR-powered LED displays, Samsung’s three IF Series models – the P1.5, P2.0 and P2.5 – mirror the exciting innovation of the IoT and AI technologies that are prominently featured throughout the booth. HDR support brings impeccable presentation quality to each IF Series display, while a slim, lightweight design and convenient full front and rear access make installation and maintenance a breeze. The signage also offers visitors a first-hand demonstration of how Samsung’s integrated content management platform, MagicInfo, may be used to create a scintillating, easy-to-manage façade.

If you are unable to attend CES 2018, check out the video above to see how Samsung City came together, and immerse yourself in the seamlessly connected future that’s showcased within the city limits.

At CES 2018, Samsung Electronics’ press conference and exhibition booth had an entirely new look and feel. Unlike years past, where the company focused on announcing individual products, this year’s booth setup and press activities were designed to show a unifying concept that illustrates how the seamless connectivity of Samsung devices enables consumers to live smarter and more convenient lives.

Younghee Lee, CMO of Samsung Electronics, sat down with Samsung Newsroom to elaborate on the new theme and discuss the reasons for the changes.

Q. The design of Samsung’s CES booth as well as the format of its press conference are very different this year. Can you tell us a bit more about the new concept?

Lee: We call our CES exhibition concept this year, ‘Samsung City 2020,’ and it was realized by further developing our concept of ‘Samsung Town’ introduced at IFA last September. Through this theme, we hope to demonstrate how an open IoT platform and AI technologies can add new value to consumers’ lives in their homes, offices and entertainment spaces.

We also aim to illustrate the progress of Samsung’s 2020 IoT blueprint. Originally outlined at CES 2015, we will show how we plan to further advance IoT and intelligence by the year 2020.

Q. Samsung’s global press conference illustrated the company’s vision and willingness to provide an integrated experience through AI and IoT. What was the main focus of this new approach?

Lee: There are differing views regarding the future of IoT and AI in the industry, but Samsung is uniquely positioned to democratize IoT for everyone. We are the global consumer electronics leader across many categories – from TVs to home appliances and mobile devices – and linking those products through the leading open and connected IoT platform, SmartThings, will usher in a new era of connectivity.

To differentiate our strengths and values in IoT, we wanted to demonstrate the seamless connections of our products in front of thousands of media and attendees at CES.

Q. Samsung Electronics has a wide range of businesses. Do they share the same vision?

Lee: We unveiled our brand philosophy video at CES. As we continue to embrace what we call the Intelligence of Things, all our business divisions will work more closely together than ever before. This will not only strengthen the value of their products to consumers, but also ensure that all our products are able to connect seamlessly.

This will not come without its challenges, but Samsung’s DNA has always been focused on the spirit of challenge and innovation. As our IoT-related business divisions share the same goals, I’m confident that we will achieve success through collaboration.

From a marketing perspective, we will continue to communicate our unified vision. Our slogan, “Do What You Can’t,” is not only our message to consumers but also a promise to ourselves. We hope that Samsung customers will recognize our efforts as we work toward this goal.

Q. Can you tell us about Samsung’s performance last year? As CMO of Samsung Electronics, how would you describe the company’s blueprint for the future?

Lee: Last year, Samsung Electronics ranked No. 6 on Interbrand’s “Best Global Brands 2017” list, while the brand’s value reached $56.2 billion – a 9 percent increase from the previous year. We are incredibly thankful for the continued loyalty and support of our customers, a primary reason we are able to maintain our brand position.

This year, we hope to make another leap forward by showcasing how the seamless connection of Samsung’s products can unlock unlimited possibilities and enhance consumers’ lives in so many ways.

As new technologies are constantly developed to meet the evolving needs of consumers, Samsung’s brand philosophy remains focused on people, while our products are created with the aim of helping them realize their dreams. Going forward, Samsung will not only be a leading ‘human global brand’ but a beloved brand, as well.

Samsung Electronics has a new take on the intelligent IoT experience that is turning heads at CES 2018. This isn’t just a stage to show off flashy new technology though; it’s an approach that will enable us to enhance all areas of our lives.

Samsung has created a “Samsung City” at its CES booth, which showcases the communication and connectivity among all of Samsung’s devices. What’s most noteworthy, however, is that the innovations are not just demos – all of the devices and services featured will be available to consumers in the near future, beginning in 2018.

Across twelve different zones at Samsung’s booth, participants will see what their lives with Samsung will look like in the coming years and beyond, and how our concepts of home, business and mobility will soon change forever.

Home: The Center of Life

Samsung’s products will continuously become more intelligent, which will lead to major changes in how we live.

For example, they already enable you to enjoy content more easily and continuously. Instead of your content being locked to one device in one room, it can follow you wherever you go. Content such as live video streams can also move between devices such as your Galaxy Note8 and QLED TV. Likewise, music from your mobile device can be streamed to your TV or connected speaker.

But with Bixby, life is even more simplified. If you start watching a TV show in the living room, you can say, “Bixby, I will keep watching in the bedroom,” and Bixby will pause your show and resume it when you get to the bedroom. All the associated tasks and devices can also move rooms with you and Bixby can turn the devices off in the living room if it’s now empty.

In the near future, you could even use Bixby to help you take better care of your health. If you were to take a photo of something you were eating, for instance, Bixby Vision could automatically calculate the number of calories in the meal, and the Galaxy Gear smartwatch could track calorie intake. Using this data, the Family Hub fridge could recommend recipes to help you manage your caloric intake.

These home technology demonstrations are based on the ability of Samsung’s devices to communicate with one another. The company’s technology goes far beyond the capabilities of a regular AI assistant.

Business & Mobility: Expanding Intelligence Beyond the Home

Look outside the home and you’ll see Samsung has brought AI and IoT innovation there, too.

For instance, the Samsung Flip, a newly developed digital signage solution, supports wireless synchronization between a laptop and a smartphone, thereby expanding the office experience. Ideas captured by the Samsung Notebook 9 Pen or Galaxy Note8 can therefore be displayed immediately on the Samsung Flip for brainstorming. Seamless sharing on a mobile device via NFC is also available, helping to bring about a collaborative workspace where creative ideas can be exchanged freely.

With the combination of 5G and automotive electronics, Samsung also plans to present a new vision for the connected car. The Digital Cockpit, a new automotive electronics platform developed by Samsung and HARMAN, is an extraordinary result of collaboration. At the CES exhibition venue, you can interactively experience the Digital Cockpit with VR, and also check out the TCU (Telematics Control Unit) and Mirror Replacement Vision System through the kiosk.

As one of the largest connected device companies in the world, Samsung is well-placed to deliver the level of intelligence that will make life easier for users. The great thing is that this harmonized life for consumers will soon be a reality. Come take a peek at what will be your new lifestyle at Samsung’s booth at CES.

Samsung Electronics today announced that its Smart TV security solution, inclusive of its Samsung Knox technology, has been recognized by global certification institutes. Samsung’s Smart TV is the first in the industry to receive the Common Criteria (CC) certification for three consecutive years, and its Checkout payment service is also certified by the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).

“At Samsung, security is our top priority in developing Smart TV technology,” said Jonghee Han, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We are committed to providing one of the most reliable security solutions on the market for our Smart TV users.”

Samsung Knox technology for TV implements a hardware root of trust security architecture which incorporates security features across the TV platform stack. Integrated into all Smart TV lineups from this year, Samsung Knox’s technology ensures strengthened security optimized for the Smart TV user environment. This system detects and removes malicious applications which can steal important data from other applications. Based on this enhanced security, Samsung became the first in the industry to receive Common Criteria certification, an internationally recognized certification system for computer security that is conducted for government evaluations, for three consecutive years.

Samsung Checkout payment service received PCI DSS certification by UL at CES 2018, another noteworthy feat for the TV industry. For T-Commerce, which allows consumers to purchase products and services directly from their TVs, Samsung has further strengthened the security of its Smart TV payment service. Checkout is a simple T-Commerce payment service that encrypts credit card information. PCI DSS is an international data security standard which has been adopted by American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB International, MasterCard, and Visa Inc. for all organizations that process, store or transmit credit card information.

In addition to Samsung’s own security software, Samsung and McAfee also have developed a new security application tailored for TVs called McAfee Security for TV, which has been in place since April 2017 and ships on all Samsung Smart TVs. This TV security application provides an additional twofold protection for Samsung Smart TVs. McAfee is one of the world’s leading independent cybersecurity companies, offering security services in 32 languages. Samsung Smart TVs were the first in the world to adopt this innovative security software, specifically for TVs.

Samsung and HARMAN unveiled a new concept in connected car technology at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018. This first automotive electronics collaboration between the two companies has resulted in the Digital Cockpit platform, which combines 5G technology and an IoT platform to provide an intelligent and seamless connected car experience.

Consumers’ needs have changed greatly when it comes to automotive technology. While both drivers and passengers have always needed ease of use, personalization and safety, more than ever, they need their devices to be able to connect to each other and to offer simpler controls. The Digital Cockpit meets these needs and more by providing infotainment and IoT services across a suite of OLED and QLED screens.

The Digital Cockpit consists of three displays and three knobs that can all be customized according to driver and passenger tastes.

The Cluster Display in front of the driver uses a 12.3-inch OLED and provides driving information such as speed and RPM. Infotainment is handled by a 28-inch QLED Central Information Display (CID) and Passenger Display, using the integrated solutions for multiple displays running on a single chip. Below these displays is the Control Display, a 12.4-inch curved OLED that enables control of other features such as air conditioning.

The Digital Cockpit’s three knobs have a circular display akin to Samsung’s Gear S watch, so users can directly and intuitively use them. The customizable knobs can be set to functions most frequently used by the driver, such as clock, temperature, volume and Bixby.

The Cluster Display (left) for information and the Center Information Display/Passenger Display (right) for infotainment

The Digital Cockpit really sets itself apart in the way users can interact with it. For instance, the system includes a gesture sensor in the back seat so that passengers can use motions to control music or the radio. It also uses Samsung’s Bixby voice assistant, which offers automotive-optimized control functions such as moving the QLED display or changing the colors of ambient lighting. But it isn’t just the in-car settings you can control with the Digital Cockpit. It also uses Bixby and SmartThings to control a number of IoT devices not even in the car. So you can check the inside of your fridge to see if you have enough milk before you get home, for example, or can start up your washing machine or vacuum cleaner from within your vehicle.

Turn on your vehicle’s air conditioner using only your voice with Bixby.

Additional features ensure that driving is safer than ever. The Mirror Replacement Vision System provides a front/back HD camera and display system instead of physical side and rear-view mirrors. It gives three-split-view for key moments such as changing lanes or parking. It can even detect moving objects and sound an alarm if things get too close.

The Mirror Replacement Vision System replaced with side- and rear-view mirrors

All this is on display at the Samsung and HARMAN booth at CES. Since Samsung acquired HARMAN last year, the two companies have focused on connected technologies for automotive, consumer and enterprise markets. Leveraging Samsung’s mobile and IT technology as well as HARMAN’s automotive expertise to create a unique platform, the Digital Cockpit has set the industry standard for integrated and advanced display technology.

The future will see the car becoming a mobile living space. It will literally become a home away from home. This will require new levels of comfort and also added safety and connectivity to all aspects of life. The Digital Cockpit showcases this level of connectivity, and also paves the way for further innovations in the future. Based on Samsung’s technology and state-of-the-art IoT platform, the company continues to lead the way into the era of the autonomous car.

Smart TV is no longer a new concept but there are continuous improvements that are making TV better connected than ever. At the forefront of this innovation is Samsung Electronics’ 2018 Smart TV lineup.

In 2018, Samsung TVs now connect seamlessly with mobile devices. And unlike in the years past, this interconnectedness is now simple to achieve, making content sharing and personalized recommendations a breeze.

Connect and Share with Ease

There’s no longer a tradeoff to having a top end smart TV with a range of exciting features. There’s no need to get lost in a maze of menus if you want to set up your TV – in fact the opposite is true with the 2018 Samsung Smart TVs. Thanks to the SmartThings app, you’ll have access to everything you need to get set up and enjoying your new television quickly. With a few tap of the mobile app, SmartThings enables your TV to recognize your Wi-Fi connection, your set-top boxes, favorite apps and Samsung account information.

Taking this fast lane to smart TV installation means you get to watch your favorite shows quickly. And even here, SmartThings shows its intelligence. If you’re already logged in to a video application on your mobile device, your TV connects to the same account without having to re-enter your login details on screen. You can quickly choose which of your apps connect in this way to your TV.

But your mobile phone isn’t just used to set up your TV. It will become part of a daily way to interact with it. For example, you can use it to set a reminder for when the game is on. And this is a smart reminder that knows what channel the game is on and enables you to switch to it right away without having to remember what channel it comes on.

The connectivity gets better still. In 2018, all Samsung Smart TVs will feature the SmartThings dashboard. This will enable your TV to not just be the center of your living room, but the Internet of Things (IoT) hub for your entire home. You’ll be able to see what’s in your fridge, control the lights, adjust the thermostat and do many other things – all from the TV screen. You’ll even be able to use your TV to instantly share photos captured during special moments like your unforgettable trip to Paris with your parents back home. We’ve listened to our users who told us they wanted to connect more conveniently with their home. This will enable them to do so.

Universal Guide for Your Personalized Preference

Although the TV is getting smarter, the device should always be primarily about enjoying content. There are enhancements in this area too when it comes to finding what to watch. This year sees Samsung make improvements to its Universal Guide, which can recommend movies, TV shows, sports and more all from one place. It integrates content from your cable provider as well as VOD and streaming services onto one consolidated page. And the recommendations are made based on your preferences.

To make browsing even easier, you could use the intuitive Samsung One Remote, which controls not just your TV, but other devices connected to it, such as a cable box, Blu-ray player, and the internet. It’s recently been enhanced with the ability to control AV products connected with an optical cable.

Additional options available through 2018 Samsung Smart TVs include enhanced TV PLUS. This enables users to find and enjoy UHD and HDR movies from a large selection – 8,900 movies, including 195 in UHD – available through the Samsung Smart TV user interface. The selection is constantly growing thanks to Samsung’s ever-expanding list of content partnerships, which will make it easier and easier for users to find and enjoy the UHD and HDR movies that they want to see.

Meanwhile, Steam Link allows users to stream their favorite Steam PC games in 4K from their computer to play on their TV. More than 6,000 games are already available and can be streamed without purchasing a separate Steam Link device.

Voice-assisted Living

We’ve given you a choice of methods to find your way to great content. One of the newest and most innovative ways is through the use of your voice. Bixby, Samsung’s intelligent assistant platform, will be included in Samsung’s 2018 premium TV line up, launching first in Korea and the US. Not only will it enable you to use your voice to interact with content from various providers such as Amazon, but it will also allow you to unlock a range of other possibilities that add a new layer of convenience.

For example, you could ask Bixby to switch your TV to a particular channel or play a particular song. You could even ask Bixby to do the hard work such as finding Oscar-winning movies. Away from entertainment, Bixby can tell you the news or weather, control your IoT devices throughout the house, or show you your most recent photos. It’s another example of how the TV is now more than the device you use to view terrestrial content.

Thanks to SmartThings and Bixby, the TV is now part of Samsung’s ecosystem of connected devices that can all communicate with each other. In the case of Samsung’s 2018 Smart TVs, they are now able to carry out a great deal of functions and activities. But the core function is ease of use. The connected home is one where users can enjoy life with fewer distractions and complications. Samsung’s Smart TVs will be major drivers of this experience.

Samsung Electronics today at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) outlined its vision and strategy for intelligent Internet of Things (IoT) experiences.

During today’s press conference, Samsung demonstrated its unique ability to make seamlessly connected consumer experiences across Samsung devices at home, at the office and on-the-go. Samsung has been working to make all Samsung products IoT ready by 2020. In addition, the company announced today its plan to advance IoT adoption via an open, consistent and intelligent platform.

“At Samsung, we believe IoT should be as easy as flipping a switch. With the new products and services announced today, we’re making IoT easier and more seamless,” said Hyunsuk (HS) Kim, President, Head of Samsung’s Consumer Electronics Division and Samsung Research. “We’re committed to accelerating IoT adoption for everyone and making all Samsung connected devices intelligent by 2020. These advancements will help consumers realize the benefits of a seamless and simple connected life.”

Hyunsuk (HS) Kim, President, Head of Samsung’s Consumer Electronics Division and Samsung Research

Intelligence of Things for Everyone

Samsung’s IoT philosophy is built on open innovation making it accessible to more people and when infused with intelligence, can personalize their experience. Today’s fragmented and complex IoT ecosystem is a barrier to adoption. For IoT to be approachable and accessible it requires scale and open innovation. Thanks to a robust portfolio of products including TVs, appliances and smartphones, and Samsung’s leadership to deliver 5G connectivity, Samsung is well-positioned to deliver an open IoT ecosystem via SmartThings.

Tim Baxter, President and CEO of Samsung Electronics North America

Samsung is working with partners such as the Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) to set common industry standards. OCF is the largest IoT standardization body in the world and Samsung’s ARTIK chip, air conditioner and Family Hub refrigerator have already been certified by the association for interoperability criteria needed for IoT.

In spring 2018, Samsung will unite its IoT applications, including Samsung Connect, Smart Home, Smart View and more into the SmartThings app to connect and control any SmartThings-enabled device directly from their phone, TV, or car from a single application. Additionally, Samsung announced plans to connect HARMAN Ignite to the SmartThings Cloud, moving the IoT experience beyond the smart home to the car. As a result, consumers will be able to manage their connected home from the car and vice versa.

Yoon Lee (left), Senior Vice President of Samsung Electronics America and Joe Stinziano (right), Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics America

An integral part of Samsung’s vision is to connect devices and make them intelligent. With Bixby, Samsung is bringing its personalized intelligence service to more devices. In 2018, select Samsung Smart TVs and new Family Hub refrigerators will have voice control via Bixby to make everyday tasks easier. With devices and services working together and infused with intelligence, in-home activities become easier.

Alanna Cotton, Vice President of Samsung Electronics America

Because increased connectivity requires improved security, Samsung announced that it has incorporated its trusted Samsung Knox technology into its connected devices, including Smart TVs and Smart Signages, additional mobile products and Smart appliances. Knox technology includes a hardware security system and firmware updates to help ensure devices are protected.

Dinesh Paliwal, President and CEO of HARMAN International

Building the Connected Future

Samsung highlighted its ongoing commitment to investing in breakthrough technologies. In 2017, Samsung spent more than $14 billion on R&D. The company also increased investments through Samsung NEXT – a key initiative to accelerate its transformation into an integrated hardware and software company.

Samsung also created a new AI Center as part of its newly consolidated Samsung Research unit. The AI Center, which includes four labs in Toronto, Montreal, Cambridge (UK) and Russia in 2018, will be coupled with Samsung’s ongoing work in Korea and Silicon Valley and the company’s M&A activities to drive its AI ambitions forward.

Seamless Device Experiences

It hasn’t been a year since HARMAN International became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics focused on connected technologies for automotive, consumer and enterprise markets, and the two companies have already leveraged their combined teams and resources to drive future mobility forward. Unveiled today at CES 2018 are a host of unique connected car solutions that support HARMAN and Samsung’s joint mission to become the leader in connectivity and autonomous driving: connecting the lives of people, whether at home, on the go, or together in the car.

These key innovations showcase an integrated approach to a rich digital car experience, including:

A reinvented digital cockpit platform for all vehicle segments that has given the interior of the car a makeover;

A new telematics solution along with the industry first automotive-grade 5G-ready connectivity solution; and

An ecosystem of partners and solutions to further build out the Samsung open autonomous platform, along with a showcase of our first implementation of this together with TTTech.

Each new solution was made possible through the HARMAN-Samsung alliance that leverages Samsung’s global scale, R&D capabilities, dominance in mobile/TV/semiconductors and distribution channels and HARMAN’s leading connected car heritage, relationships, market knowledge and growing community of innovation partners. Both companies are also making global investments in start-ups to help OEMs meet growing consumer demand for in-vehicle technology through scalable solutions that enhance the user experience for every vehicle segment.

“Together with Samsung, we have increased innovation speed through scale, resources and competencies to help automakers focus on the car’s evolution from device-centric to experience centric,” said Dinesh Paliwal, HARMAN President and CEO. “HARMAN has the heritage and expertise in automotive, and collectively HARMAN and Samsung harness our best technologies and global scale to accelerate how we better serve the needs of automakers in this rapidly evolving automotive market.”

New HARMAN Digital Cockpit Platform

The new Digital Cockpit platform includes a suite of flexible and scalable premium experiences that support today’s connected lifestyles without compromising safety or performance. It’s available in standard and advanced system configurations and can seamlessly integrate the instrument cluster with center console via voice, haptic feedback, and physical knobs and steering wheel controls in a single, center screen for all vital vehicle information and features. This also supports a multi-modal approach for interactions with different human-machine interfaces to allow customization in terms of HVAC, media and user settings.

The Digital Cockpit platform brings an entirely new generation of communication and ergonomics inside vehicles, allowing drivers to focus on the road ahead while intuitively and safely interacting with their in-car technology. This is made possible through a projection mode for services and apps via a user’s smartphone, allowing for increased personalization. A greater IoT ecosystem via cloud technology in the entry-level segment, as well as mid/high-level configurations, not only improves connectivity, but helps lower costs and overall vehicle weight.

In a premium configuration, the Digital Cockpit weaves together a driver’s entire connected lifestyle across the Internet of Things. Through a multi-display layout that leverages HARMAN’s Ignite Platform, the in-car user experience can be personalized for the driver and passenger via services such as virtual personal assistants, portable profiles, augmented reality and more. This also allows for the Android OS to be integrated on four displays – a first for the industry.

Focused on a future generation of shared mobility, the premium Digital Cockpit personalizes occupant experiences, so drivers and passengers feel like the car is theirs even if they don’t own it. By leveraging the phone as a key service, the system can automatically access subscription services associated with user profiles while Bixby offers intelligent personal assistance to help occupants complete tasks by voice, touch, gesture and context-based triggers.

The Digital Cockpit is scalable and made available for every automotive segment, offering future proof and safety focused features within a developer-friendly open ecosystem.

First 5G Automotive Telematics Solution and Customer

HARMAN and Samsung are jointly developing modular approaches for advanced telematics, capable of 1 Gb/s bandwidth. HARMAN and Samsung will deliver the industry’s first 5G-ready automotive solution and multi-band conformal antenna to enable secure, fast and reliable data communications. The solution consists of a telematics control unit with a modular design accommodating a network access device (NAD) supporting LTE CAT 16 connectivity today and 5G in the future leveraging the same hardware design. 5G represents a paradigm shift in the future of mobility. In the automotive sector, 5G delivers safety-enhancing C-V2X capability that is an essential enabler for autonomous transportation. 5G boosts speeds up to 100X faster than current 4G LTE standards to provide incredibly fast high-resolution streaming, immersive virtual and augmented reality features and seamless cloud-based applications in fast-moving cars. Ultra-reliable and with low-latency response times of just 1ms, 5G enables C-V2X and cloud-based compute and storage for the next generation autonomous vehicles.

Samsung Electronics today introduced its new Samsung DRVLINE platform, positioning itself as the go-to partner for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Mobility as a Service (MaaS) providers in the autonomous driving market. The DRVLINE platform is an open, modular, and scalable hardware and software-based platform, which is a valuable solution for automakers because it can integrate best-in-class technology into new vehicles, while also building a foundation for fleets of the future.

“The cars of tomorrow won’t just change how we get around, they’ll transform our streets and society. They’ll bring mobility to people who need it, make our roads safer, and revolutionize our communities,” said Young Sohn, President and Chief Strategy Officer at Samsung Electronics, and Chairman of the Board at HARMAN. “Building an autonomous platform requires close collaboration across industry, as one company cannot deliver on this enormous opportunity alone. The challenge is simply too big and too complex. Through the DRVLINE platform, we’re inviting the best and brightest from the automotive industry to join us, and help shape the future of the car of tomorrow, today.”

Samsung’s announcement, at CES, comes after a year of historic firsts for the company. These include: an $8 billion acquisition of connected technologies company HARMAN and the creation of a joint automotive Strategic Business Unit; the establishment of a $300 million Samsung Automotive Innovation Fund; and a series of investments and partnerships designed to promote collaboration in the automotive sector.

Many hardware and software autonomous driving platforms force the end user to adopt particular technology as an all-or-nothing black-box package. The DRVLINE platform however, has been designed so vendors can collaborate and the software can be customized or enhanced and individual components and technologies can be swapped in and out as needed. This also helps future-proof the platform – an essential consideration in such a fast-changing industry: OEMs can market the most advanced existing autonomous technology, while incorporating new innovations as they work toward Level 5 automation.

The DRVLINE platform incorporates several best-in-class components and technologies, which leverage Samsung’s global expertise in electronics, IoT, and embedded systems, including in-car compute for Levels 3, 4, and 5 automation. It also includes a brand-new ADAS forward-facing camera system, created by Samsung and HARMAN, which is engineered to meet upcoming New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) standards. These include lane departure warning, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and automatic emergency braking.

“In a car, the human brain is constantly performing incredibly complex calculations while driving,” said John Absmeier, SVP of Autonomous/ADAS Strategic Business Unit at HARMAN and VP of Smart Machines for Samsung Electronics. “How far is that lamppost? Is that pedestrian going to step into the street? How long until the yellow light turns red? The industry has made incredible advances in automation, yet in-car compute is still a long way from approximating the power of our brains. The DRVLINE platform with its open and high-level compute capability is a first major first step toward building an ecosystem to support full autonomy.”

Samsung appears at CES alongside several of its partners in ADAS and autonomous driving. As part of its strategy of open innovation and collaboration, the company has engaged a robust ecosystem of partners across the industry, including:

Software: TTTech, AImotive, Hella Aglaia, Renovo Auto

In-Car Compute: Graphcore, ThinCi, Infineon

Communications: Autotalks, Valens

Sensors: Quanergy, Tetravue, Oculii, Innoviz

Just ahead of CES 2018, Samsung Electronics debuted its new 146-inch modular display, The Wall, at a product unveiling on January 7 at the Enclave event venue in Las Vegas.

The world’s first modular TV for consumers, The Wall is a MicroLED display that features self-emitting technology as well as a bezel-less, modular-based structure that can be customized to fit into any home environment.

JH Han, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, hosted the event, and explained in his opening remarks that the introduction of the company’s breakthrough display and its features is a first step to bring to life Samsung’s vision to make screens “the center of everyday life.”

Nevertheless, as Dave Das, Senior Vice President at Samsung Electronics America, noted, The Wall and its enhancements in picture quality and design are only one example of how Samsung is working “to redefine the possibilities of television, and let you do what you couldn’t do before.” Other innovations include Samsung’s new artificial intelligence (AI) technology for 8K content and improved Smart TV features, which were also showcased at the event.

MicroLED Technology for an Unprecedented TV Experience

Made possible by Samsung’s advancements in semiconductor processing techniques and LED technology, the pixel LED modules of The Wall’s self-emitting technology are smaller than ever before, and each chip incorporates RGB color. As a result, The Wall’s self-emitting technology removes the need for color filters altogether and is able to deliver up to 2000 nits of peak brightness, brighter white hues, darker black shades and the truest natural colors.

Additionally, its bezel-less design enables the individual modules of The Wall to fit together seamlessly, removing limitations to screen size and making it difficult to tell where the screen ends and the wall begins.

Event attendees eagerly await the unveiling of Samsung’s breakthrough display, The Wall.

Instead, they should be able to blend into any home,” said Han, referring to Samsung’s vision for the future of displays.

The Wall is debuted on the First Look stage.

With its bezel-less modular design, consumers can build their TV to reach over 100 inches, extending the screen size to larger-than-life levels.

A Smarter and More Advanced Technology for the Future Display

The Wall offers superlative picture quality and can be extended to just about any size or shape. But to complete the viewing experience, it also needs high-resolution content. That’s why Samsung’s 85-inch 2018 QLED TV is equipped with AI technology which transforms all pictures into 8K high-quality content by adjusting the algorithm in the display based on a user’s prior experiences.

At the event, participants were also able to experience the latest TV technologies such as Samsung’s HDR 10+ platform, the enhanced smart features and HDR gaming capabilities.

Samsung’s 8K QLED TVs feature image-upscaling AI technology that makes pictures appear more detailed and vibrant than they would on a 4K display.

First Ever Modular Display with MicroLED: The Screen of the Future

Samsung’s “The Wall,” a 146-inch modular display with MicroLED technology delivers incredible definition, without restrictions to size, resolution or form. It is a self-emitting display with micrometer (µm) scale LEDs – which are much smaller than current LEDs, and serve as their own source of light.

The MicroLED technology featured in The Wall eliminates the need for color filters or backlight, yet allows the screen to offer consumers the ultimate viewing experience. Also, the MicroLED screen excels in durability and effectiveness, including luminous efficiency, the light source lifetime and power consumption, setting the standard for future screen technology.

Featuring a module-based, bezel-less design, “The Wall” also exemplifies how consumers can customize their television sizes and shapes to suit their needs. The screen can adapt to serve different purposes, such as creating a wall-size display for multiple spaces.

AI Technology for 8K Picture Quality: Maximizing Viewer Experience

Samsung also featured the world’s first QLED TV featuring 8K AI technology, which will be launched internationally, starting with Korea and the US during the second half of 2018. This AI technology upscales standard definition content to 8K resolution. It employs a proprietary algorithm to adjust screen resolution based on picture quality characteristics of each scene, to continuously improve picture quality and easily transform any type of content from any source into a high-resolution 8K.

This 8K solution maximizes the viewing experience through several new features. These include detail enhancement – to upgrade standard definition content; noise reduction; edge restoration function – which more clearly outlines on – screen objects; and automatic sound adjustment for different content, such as sports events or music concerts.

2018 Smart TV, Upgraded with Bixby and SmartThings

Samsung showcased 2018 Samsung Smart TV’s enhanced connection and convenience functions at the First Look event, including Bixby, SmartThings and Universal Guide.

Bixby is an intelligent assistant platform developed by Samsung, enables easier interaction between the TV and its users, thanks to its intuitive UX, and comprehensive voice analysis capabilities. 2018 Samsung Smart TVs will also offer easier sharing and connectivity, thanks to SmartThings, Samsung’s IoT platform hub. It offers a simpler way to control the television and sync with other devices. 2018 will also see the launch of Universal Guide – an advanced program guide which automatically recommends TV programs and content according to a user’s preferences.

First Look also highlighted a variety of product zones, showcasing 8K-AI technology, 4K HDR Gaming, HDR10+, Smart TV experience and more. These areas gave guests at First Look 2018 the chance to get hands-on Samsung’s most exciting innovations in TV.

For more information on the latest innovations in television from Samsung, please visit Samsung’s CES booth #15006, on Level 1 of the Central Hall in the Las Vegas Convention Center from January 9-12, 2018.

Samsung Electronics today introduced the world’s first 8K AI technology for its new 85-inch 8K QLED TV at its product unveiling of The Wall ahead of CES 2018. The AI technology based on machine learning analyzes content and automatically upscales low-resolution images into 8K picture quality.

Despite the fact that the market is currently flooded with an ever-increasing number of displays capable of realizing super-high resolution such as UHD and 8K, many viewers are not able to fully enjoy the experience due to the lack of available high resolution content.

However, Samsung’s AI technology has all but eliminated this obstacle by enabling the television to transform all pictures into 8K, the current highest ultra-high definition television resolution in digital television and digital cinematography. It lets consumers enjoy just about any movie or TV show on any channel in 8K resolution regardless of native resolution or method of transmission.

The AI technology helps to support three following features:

First, QLED TV, based on AI technology, is equipped with a database that studies and analyzes millions of images in advance to transform low-resolution content into high-resolution. When fed with a source in low resolution, this feature of the QLED TV selects the optimal filter and converts the source into a high-quality image.

In addition, by increasing image processing 64 times, the technology helps offer natural images in high-resolution, without compromising gradation in the picture. In the image of an aurora, for instance, the TV provides consumers with subtle, seamless gradation.

Lastly, the new QLED TV categorizes elements of picture quality (black/blooming/brightness) in input sources by scene to produce pictures with richer and more detailed contrast. With the feature, the edges of text are rendered sharp and a moonlight image is offered with the edges of the moon in the background clear, not blurred.

Furthermore, Samsung’s AI technology enables the TV’s sound to be optimized for specific scenes, without having to change any settings. If you’re watching a football game, for instance, the cheering of the spectators is amplified to recreate the excitement of the match. Or, if viewing a concert, the low-frequency sounds of the music might be highlighted to deliver a richer sound.

This AI technology has already attracted much attention, landing Samsung’s 2018 QLED TV lineup a CES 2018 Innovation Award, honoring outstanding design and engineering in consumer technology products.

Samsung 8K QLED TVs with AI technology will be launched during the second half of 2018, focusing on sets with screens larger than 65 inches. By rolling out this technology, Samsung is improving the viewing experience for the consumer by making it possible for them to easily enjoy all of their favorite video content in a sharper, richer and more pristine image quality.

Samsung Electronics will offer CES 2018 attendees a first look into its vision for a “Workplace of the Future” with the unveiling of its new Samsung Flip digital flip chart display. Introduced at the company’s First Look event, the Samsung Flip WM55H promotes more collaborative digital engagement by alleviating the most prominent challenges businesses face when organizing, facilitating and recapping meetings.

An upgrade on both standard paper flip charts and analog boards, the Samsung Flip display expands opportunities to generate game-changing ideas while maintaining the familiar feel of traditional writing. However, unlike its predecessors, Samsung Flip allows easy sharing, annotation, movement and even searching, as well as the ability for multiple users to create content at once. Additionally, the Flip’s portable, wheel-based stand transforms any location into a huddle room, meaning added flexibility to businesses with limited conference space. Finally, the Flip display’s intuitive interface was specifically designed to be user-friendly and allow for timely, uninterrupted conversation.

“The often-flawed logistics of the modern meeting make it easy for participants to feel disengaged and for vital ideas and discoveries to become lost,” said Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “Today’s workers require more powerful and flexible technologies, and we truly believe that our new Samsung Flip display offers endless possibilities for driving impactful collaboration. We are excited to debut the Samsung Flip at CES 2018, and we look forward to building upon this technology to help businesses work better, smarter and faster.”

Productive and Interactive Collaboration

Through simultaneous multi-user engagement, the Samsung Flip ensures that all voices and ideas are heard during a given meeting. Up to four different participants can introduce content or annotate directly on screen at the same time using either their fingers or a dual-sided pen. In doing so, each user can customize his or her own writing style, size and color, with each notation made clear and visible by viewer-friendly UHD resolution.

For added interactivity, the Samsung Flip display also offers extensive device compatibility through both wireless connectivity and USB, PC and mobile ports. An integrated screen-sharing functionality makes Flip content available on connected PCs, smartphones and tablets without interruption or reduced visual quality. Likewise, users also can import personally-stored content onto the Flip display’s screen and introduce fresh ideas to the discussion.

Customized and Comfortable Creativity

The Samsung Flip display delivers unprecedented collaboration efficiency by condensing the multiple tools and processes required for a traditional meeting into a sleek, stylish all-in-one design. Participants do not need a specialized touch pen to interact with the screen, and can erase notes through a quick palm swipe. Flip users also can access up to 20 pages of writing space, with embedded search functionalities available to instantly direct participants to specific content. This continuous, rolling stream avoids the lost time and interruptions that often result as participants have to search through multiple sheets of paper or lines of notes to locate a specific detail.

Each Flip display is customizable and can configure to portrait or landscape orientations to suit unique meeting needs. When coupled with its height-adjustable stand, the Flip also maximizes available writing space at users’ preferred positions. Should a meeting require more centralized, roundtable-style discussion, users can remove and connect the Flip display to a compatible wall mount.

Convenient and Secure Conclusion

As meetings wrap up, the Samsung Flip display securely stores all content within a central database, eliminating the need for cumbersome recaps or handwritten transcription. An airtight, password-based protection system safeguards meeting details and ensures that only approved users can access the information. Once logged in, meeting facilitators and participants can download and share featured content through email or traditional printing. Users additionally can save meeting notes to a USB drive or other external sources.

Following its CES 2018 launch and ensuing availability in the U.S. and Europe, Samsung plans to introduce the Flip display to global professional users later this month. The Samsung Flip display also will be available for purchase through online and brick-and-mortar furniture retailers, as well as traditional professional B2B display channels.

For a closer look at the Samsung Flip, visit Samsung’s CES booth #15006, on Level 1 of the Central Hall in the Las Vegas Convention Center from January 9-12, 2018.

Samsung Electronics today unveiled the next generation of its award-winning Family Hub refrigerator, continuing to pioneer and redefine the refrigerator category. A winner of the 2018 CES Best of Innovation award, Family Hub sets a new standard for connected living. The new Family Hub will be on display at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) from January 9-12, 2018.

Family Hub in 2018 offers a wide range of smart features that allow consumers to do what they could not do before. These include syncing up food storage with meal preparation, keeping family members better connected and organized, and providing enhanced entertainment. Family Hub is also more intuitive and intelligent with the addition of Bixby voice control and its integration with Samsung’s SmartThings IoT ecosystem.

“Since Family Hub’s introduction in 2016, consumers have embraced it as their home’s digital command center to help manage food, family and fun. We’ve been listening closely to current users and created a new Family Hub that’s even smarter and more advanced than before,” said John Herrington, Senior Vice President, General Manager of Home Appliances, Samsung Electronics America. “The integration of Bixby and SmartThings into the Family Hub is bringing a new level of intelligent connectivity into the room where people spend the most time: the kitchen.”

Simplifying Life with Connected Home Control

The new Family Hub works with the SmartThings ecosystem, allowing users to control and monitor their connected home from the Family Hub screen. The SmartThings app seamlessly connects the Family Hub with hundreds of Samsung and third party compatible connected devices. So now, in addition to seeing what’s inside their fridge from the grocery store or leaving a note on the White Board to remind the kids to clean their rooms after school, users can do countless other things without ever leaving the kitchen. These include seeing who is at the front door with the ring doorbell, adjusting the thermostat, checking on a sleeping baby in the next room, and more, right from the refrigerator screen.

Enhancing Food Management

Family Hub helps consumers manage food, with the View Inside app that enables users to see inside the fridge from anywhere. New for 2018, Meal Planner takes food management to a more personalized level by providing recipes for the family based on food preferences, dietary restrictions and food expirations dates. Family Hub also saves time and money with a new Deals app that gives users the ability to find great bargains and save them directly to the Shopping List or loyalty card.

Strengthening Family Connections

The new Family Hub keeps the family more closely connected and organized, with the customized ability to share calendars, photos and notes. With Bixby, Family Hub can also recognize individual voices and provide personalized information based on preferences. Ask “Hi Bixby, what’s new today?” and it will provide a read out of the news, weather and calendar updates specifically tailored to the user.

Creating New Ways to Have Fun at Home

With innovative TV and music options, the original Family Hub transformed the kitchen into an area for socializing with family and friends. Users can access millions of songs through various music streaming platforms and live radio apps, and mirror their Samsung Smart TV1. The new Family Hub also features AKG Premium Quality Sound Speaker for sound that is deep in bass and rich in mid-range2. Additionally, users can now stream content from their smartphone to the Family Hub refrigerator.

Samsung is expanding the Family Hub’s range of content with new collaborations with leading companies like HomeAdvisor, Pinterest, The Weather Company and Buzzfeed’s Tasty. Samsung also continues to collaborate with key partners including allrecipes, ring, and Grubhub to further refine and enhance the kitchen experience and promote smart lifestyle choices.

Samsung will expand the platform to four new 4D FDR models, bringing the total to 14. This will ensure that there is a Family Hub configuration to meet the needs of all consumers.

The new Family Hub will be available this spring. For more information about Samsung Home Appliances, please visit http://www.samsung.com.

1 Available with the 6400 series or 2015 TV models and above

Samsung Electronics today announced that it is bringing its next generation laundry innovation to the U.S.: the WW6850N washing machine featuring revolutionary QuickDrive technology. Responding to consumer demand for speed and cleaning performance, the 24” compact washer cleans laundry up to 35% faster for a thorough clean1, compared to current Samsung models. The WW6850N will be on display at the upcoming International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas from January 9-12, 2018.

With more Millennials than ever buying homes, this new cohort of digitally savvy homebuyers is demanding home appliances that incorporate meaningful, personalized technology to enhance their lives. The WW6850N with QuickDrive technology is just the latest in a line of differentiated laundry innovations, including the activewash Top Load Washer, AddWash Front Load Washer and FlexWash + FlexDry laundry pair.

“When you’ve got a pile of laundry to do, you just want to get it done as quickly and efficiently as possible,” said Shane Higby, Vice President, Home Appliance Marketing, Samsung Electronics America. “The introduction of the WW6850N washing machine with QuickDrive technology underscores our commitment to providing consumers with options for tackling their laundry needs to free up time for what really matters.”

The WW6850N washer’s innovative performance starts with QuickDrive technology, which features a large main drum and a back plate that move independently. This creates a dynamic action that moves clothes in four directions – up and down, and back and forth – to quickly, gently and thoroughly remove dirt for a more powerful and intense wash cycle that takes up to 35% less time than other comparable Samsung machines1. Additionally, at 24” wide and stackable, the WW6850N washer and its companion dryer are an ideal size for small spaces like first floor laundry rooms or closets just off the master suite, to conveniently tackle loads quickly and effectively.

The WW6850N is IoT-ready and compatible with Samsung’s SmartThings ecosystem. Its Q-rator laundry assistant has smart capabilities that simplify the washing cycle with intuitive features:

Laundry Recipe provides automatic recommendations for optimal wash cycles based on the color, fabric type, and degree of soiling inputted by the user.

Laundry Planner allows consumers to manage the time that a wash cycle will finish, adjusting cycle settings accordingly.

HomeCare Wizard monitors the washer to keep it operating at optimal performance and provides easy-to-follow maintenance instructions

A 2018 CES Innovations Award honoree, the WW6850N washing machine with QuickDrive technology will be available in the U.S. this year.

1 Tested on Samsung WW6850N with WW6800K. Saves up to 35% time on Heavy Duty (hot, 6lb load) with a washing performance within ± 3%, based on internal data tested by AHAM HLW-1-2013.

20th Century Fox, Panasonic Corporation and Samsung Electronics today announced updates to the associated certification and logo program for the open, royalty-free dynamic metadata platform for High Dynamic Range (HDR), called HDR10+ which they initially announced last year at IFA.

The HDR10+ platform will soon be made available to content companies, ultra-high definition TVs, Blu-ray disc players/recorders and set-top box manufacturers, as well as SoC vendors, royalty-free with only a nominal administrative fee. Companies can view the new logo, learn about the license program including final specifications, adopter agreements and sign up to receive a notification when technical specifications for HDR10+ become available at http://www.hdr10plus.org. In addition, Ultra HD Blu-ray metadata generation tools have been developed with third parties and will soon be available for content creators enabling Ultra HD Blu-ray players to enter the market. Details on the content transfer and interface format for the content creation pipeline will also be released shortly.

HDR10+ will offer a genuinely premium HDR experience for viewers through a device certification program ensuring an accurate representation of the creative intent expressed in the content. Also, its workflow improvements for creators will encourage increased production of premium HDR content.

The HDR10+ license program will provide interested companies with the necessary technical and testing specifications to implement HDR10+ technology in a way that both maintains high picture quality and gives each manufacturer the ability to apply dynamic tone mapping innovatively. The accompanying certification program will ensure that HDR10+ compliant products meet good picture quality and deliver the creative intent of movie directors and cinematographers. A certified product will feature the HDR10+ logo, which signifies the product’s excellent picture quality.

Key aspects of the license program will include:

Benefits for device manufacturers (e.g., TV, Ultra HD Blu-ray, OTT STB, etc.), content distribution services providers, SoC manufacturers, content publishers, and content creation tool providers.

No per unit royalty.

A nominal annual administration fee for device manufacturers, SoC manufacturers and content distribution service providers.

Technical specification, test specification, HDR10+ logo/logo guide, patents from the three companies directly related to the technical specification and the test specification.

Certification for devices will be performed by a third-party, authorized testing center.

Once the HDR10+ license program is open, the three founding companies will incorporate HDR10+ technologies in all future Ultra HD movie releases, selected TVs, Ultra HD Blu-ray player/recorders, and other products.

“It was important for us to create an open system that is flexible and offers a viewing experience much closer to the filmmaker’s creative intent for the film,” said Danny Kaye, Executive Vice President of 20th Century Fox, and Managing Director of the Fox Innovation Lab. “Together with Samsung and Panasonic, we aim to standardize the licensing process making it easy for partners, including content creators, television and device manufacturers, to incorporate this technology and improve the viewing experience for all audiences.”

Support continues to grow for HDR10+ and companies are looking forward to applying the 3C specifications and certification program. More than 25 companies spanning many different industries have expressed strong interest in supporting the HDR10+ platform, further reinforcing its path to success.

Amazon Prime Video, the first streaming service provider to deliver HDR10+, has made the entire Prime Video HDR library available in HDR10+ globally. The Prime Video HDR10+ catalog includes hundreds of hours of content such as Prime Originals The Grand Tour, Golden Globe®-nominated The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Jean-Claude Van Johnson, The Tick and The Man in the High Castle plus hundreds of licensed titles.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will support HDR10+ to enable a dynamic metadata solution for Warner Bros. content to Samsung, Panasonic and other HDR10+ capable 4K HDR TVs. “Warner Bros. has always strived to provide the best next gen home entertainment experience to consumers,” said Jim Wuthrich, President of the Americas and Global Strategy, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. “With HDR10+ dynamic metadata, WB can continue to more accurately bring the filmmakers’ vision of our 2018 releases and our vast catalog of over seventy-five 4K HDR titles to the home across a broad range of HDR10+ capable TV’s.”

The new HDR10+ technology optimizes picture quality for next generation displays by using dynamic tone mapping to reflect frame to frame or scene to scene variations in brightness, color saturation, and contrast, which makes for an enhanced viewing experience. HDR10+ technology optimizes the performance of many 4K ultra-high definition TVs, enabling playback on a wide range of next generation TVs bringing user experience much closer to the original creative intent for Hollywood films.

“By bringing together know-how and technology from the three founding companies, HDR10+ has the potential to deliver considerable picture quality benefits to both viewers and creators alike,” said Toshiharu Tsutsui, Director of Panasonic’s TV Business Division. “Accordingly, Panasonic anticipates wide support for HDR10+.”

“Samsung is committed to technological innovation across our TVs and HDR10+ represents an evolution in display quality for the best possible viewing experience,” said Jongsuk Chu, Senior Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We have also designed the HDR10+ platform to encourage future development in order to deliver further enhanced technology in the years to come.”

20th Century Fox, Panasonic and Samsung will show technical demonstrations of HDR10+ technology at CES 2018. Accredited journalists or parties interested in the licensee program may email chris.bess@fox.com for more information.

There’s no denying it – the PC industry has changed. With tablets, smartphones, and wearables, we have the ability to shape our computing experience around our lives like never before. But that doesn’t mean that the PC market is shrinking. Far from it – it’s evolving in a whole new way. Consumers who once preferred a traditional laptop are choosing slim, powerful notebooks that give them the flexibility to do everything, everywhere.

That’s important, because the way we work has changed as well. For many, the work day begins the moment they wake up, and often stretches well beyond dinner time. In 2018, true portability and productivity is knowing you have a single notebook that makes it possible to do what you can’t do with just a tablet or desktop. It’s thin enough to slip into your “go” bag. It’s light enough to carry all day, every day, and almost forget it’s there. It’s strong enough to endure the bumps in the road and the inevitable scrapes from the airport security bin.

At Samsung, we’re leading the evolution of the PC. Our portfolio includes 2-in-1 tablets with detachable keyboards, for those who want the ultimate in portability, along with Samsung Chromebooks, for those who want access to their favorite Google apps and services. For those who want the ultimate in power, portability, and performance, I’m excited to introduce a new series of PCs.

Our new ultraslim notebooks combine convenience with performance and design – establishing what it means to create a premium PC experience for the way we live and work today. Whether you’re working up an important presentation, drafting your next big plan, or playing your favorite game on the go, you need immersive graphics, processing power, and frame rate. Our new series of notebooks give you the screen, power, graphics, memory, storage, and battery life to make your old laptop seem, well, old.

Before we engineered our new notebooks, we listened to you. We heard what you wanted and what you needed. You told us you wanted the flexibility to do, with one notebook, more than you can do with a simple tablet or a thick laptop. So we designed a range of mobile computing experiences to meet the needs of the modern, mobile workforce—helping everyone do more at home, at the office, and on the go.

Versatility and performance are important – but as any frequent traveler will attest, durability is important as well. Keeping that in mind, we’ve developed an entirely new material to wrap it all up: Metal 12. This magnesium alloy is incredibly light, yet unbelievably strong – and feels amazing in hand. And Metal 12 is available only on Samsung devices. It’s one more way our investments in R&D are delivering next-level durability and premium design.

Our new series of ultrathin notebooks are designed for different people with different needs, who want to use their time in the most productive way they can:

Samsung Notebook 9 Pen with the built-in S pen

Jot notes. Use CAD. Sketch freehand. If you want to work, create, design or draw, the Notebook 9 Pen puts no limit on how you can express yourself. It’s a whole new way to use your notebook PC.

Powerful graphics bring movies and games to life on screen, with battery capacity that allows you to stay immersed in your favorite content throughout the day.

For those of us in the tech and related industries, the start of each new year represents a period for our own personal moments of reflection, but also as professionals and those passionate about technology to share and envision together the latest in technology innovation at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

For the past several years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has remained the industry’s biggest buzzword for its promise of delivering seamless connectivity across the multiple devices and technologies that we interact with in our daily lives – from our smartphones to smart TVs to Family Hub refrigerator to even our cars. Yet while the vision has been alluring, with IoT and related technologies still maturing, the promise has always remained ‘a few years off’.

At CES 2018, our aim, at Samsung, will be to show you the work we’ve done to change that, and to begin delivering on the promise of a connected world, today.

Across the many and various devices consumers interact with in their places of business, homes, and while on the go, each is typically encumbered by a different setup process, password to remember, and interface to learn and manage, which has made the connected experience anything but easy.

At Samsung, we decided to do something about this, and at this year’s CES, we’ll be sharing our breakthroughs to make the IoT experience easy and intuitive for you, which has involved delivering seamless connectivity between any device through a single experience, backed by an integrated ecosystem to manage all the devices in close, fluid synchronization.

The connected experience we will be introducing also is powered by a personalized intelligence interface, with the aim of ensuring you are able to tap into all the potential and power this connectedness provides, as easily as if you were flipping a switch. Understanding that innovation on this scale and delivering on a truly connected world can’t happen in a silo, we’ve also worked closely with industry partners as part of the largest IoT standardization body, the Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF), which I will also be sharing about further at the show.

Until now, the promise of a world of connected devices has remained too fragmented, and as result too complex and difficult for consumers to navigate or practically take advantage of. However, a connected world, should be anything but. It should work for you, and make life easier for you. I couldn’t be more excited to share with you further on how Samsung is bringing this vision to reality now in just a few days time at CES 2018.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced the launch of its latest premium application processor (AP), the Exynos 9 Series 9810. The Exynos 9810, built on Samsung’s second-generation 10-nanometer (nm) FinFET process, brings the next level of performance to smartphones and smart devices with its powerful third-generation custom CPU, faster gigabit LTE modem and sophisticated image processing with deep learning-based software.

In recognition of its innovation and technological advancements, Samsung’s Exynos 9 Series 9810 has been selected as a CES 2018 Innovation Awards HONOREE in the Embedded Technologies product category and will be displayed at the event, which runs January 9-12, 2018, in Las Vegas, USA.

“The Exynos 9 Series 9810 is our most innovative mobile processor yet, with our third-generation custom CPU, ultra-fast gigabit LTE modem and, deep learning-enhanced image processing,” said Ben Hur, vice president of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics. “The Exynos 9810 will be a key catalyst for innovation in smart platforms such as smartphones and personal computing for the coming AI era.”

With the benefits of the industry’s most advanced 10nm process technology, the Exynos 9810 will enable seamless multi-tasking with faster loading and transition times between the latest mobile apps. The processor has a brand new eight-core CPU under its hood, four of which are powerful third-generation custom cores that can reach 2.9 gigahertz (GHz), with the other four optimized for efficiency. With an architecture that widens the pipeline and improves cache memory, single-core performance is enhanced two-fold and multi-core performance is increased by around 40 percent compared to its predecessor.

Exynos 9810 introduces sophisticated features to enhance user experiences with neural network-based deep learning and stronger security on the most advanced mobile devices. This cutting-edge technology allows the processor to accurately recognize people or items in photos for fast image searching or categorization, or through depth sensing, scan a user’s face in 3D for hybrid face detection. By utilizing both hardware and software, hybrid face detection enables realistic face-tracking filters as well as stronger security when unlocking a device with one’s face. For added security, the processor has a separate security processing unit to safeguard vital personal data such as facial, iris and fingerprint information.

The LTE modem in the Exynos 9810 makes it much easier to broadcast or stream videos at up to UHD resolution, or in even newer visual formats such as 360-degree video. Following the successful launch of the industry’s first 1.0 gigabits per second (Gbps) LTE modem last year, Samsung again leads the industry with the first 1.2Gbps LTE modem embedded in Exynos 9810. It’s also the industry’s first Cat.18 LTE modem to support up to 6x carrier aggregation (CA) for 1.2Gbps downlink and 200 megabits per second (Mbps) uplink. Compared to its predecessor’s 5CA, this new modem delivers more stable data transfers at blazing speed. To maximize the transfer rate, the modem supports a 4×4 MIMO (Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) and 256-QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) scheme, and utilizes enhanced Licensed-Assisted Access (eLAA) technology.

Not only will multimedia experiences on mobile devices with Exynos 9810 be faster, but they will also be more immersive, thanks to a dedicated image processing and upgraded multi-format codec (MFC). With faster and more energy-efficient image and visual processing, users will see advanced stabilization for images and video of up to UHD resolution, real-time out-of-focus photography in high resolution and brighter pictures in low light with reduced noise and motion blur. The upgraded MFC supports video recording and playback at up to UHD resolution at 120 frames per second (fps). With 10-bit HEVC (high efficiency video coding) and VP9 support, the MFC can render 1,024 different tones for each primary color (red, green and blue). This translates to a vast 1.07 billion possibilities of colors, or 64 times the previous 8-bit color format’s 16.7 million. With a much wider color range and more accurate color fidelity, users will be able to create and enjoy highly immersive content.

The Exynos 9 Series 9810 is currently in mass production.

At CES 2018, Samsung Electronics will expand the connectivity and performance capabilities of its signature curved display line-up with the debut of its new CJ791 monitor, the first curved monitor to feature Intel’s Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. Designed for entertainment and business audiences, the 34-inch CJ791 model aligns single-source power and processing speed with an exceptional picture quality for a comfortable and productive user experience.

Through a single Thunderbolt 3 cable, CJ791 users can link and dock their monitor and laptop without extensive wiring. The Thunderbolt 3 connection provides processing speed of up to 40 Gigabits per second (Gbps) – a rate nearly four times faster than USB alternatives – allowing users to enjoy connectivity across a full ecosystem of docks, displays and peripheral devices including Macs, USB type-C laptops, and other desktop accessories like storage drives or external graphics cards. The Thunderbolt 3 interface also enables the CJ791 to provide up to 85 watts (W) of laptop charging power.

“As the pioneer of the curved monitor industry, Samsung continues to seek new ways to refine our displays and exceed consumers’ expectations on heightened performance and presentation,” said Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “The CJ791 aligns Thunderbolt 3 connectivity with our best-in-class curvature and QLED picture quality to captivate and engage users, while also promoting improved organization and productivity. We are thrilled to demonstrate the full capabilities of our innovative new display to CES 2018 attendees.”

Efficiency at Work

The CJ791’s clear, detail-rich design empowers business users to complete a range of tasks more efficiently. A 21:9 aspect ratio provides more screen real estate for multitasking, while a complementary 3440×1440 ultra-wide QHD resolution elevates content and imagery with nearly 2.5 times the pixel density of full HD alternatives. In turn, professionals can view large files, spreadsheets and data tables in a more readable format, and without extensive scrolling or zooming.

Professional users can also enjoy the flexibility to customize the CJ791 to their unique workspace. Along with the wire-reducing Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, the CJ791’s slim-depth and narrow-bezel design accommodates multi-display setups without sacrificing content consistency or visual appearance. The display’s height-adjustable stand and tilt functionality also empower users to customize positioning and work within their most comfortable viewing parameters.

Ahead of the Game

Samsung’s CJ791 showcases content with brilliant and realistic detail, guaranteed to entice gamers and entertainment enthusiasts. The display’s QLED presentation technology precisely reflects colors across a 125 percent sRGB spectrum, and creates visual intrigue through deeper blacks, brighter whites and pristine shades. This refinement, coupled with the industry’s sharpest 1,500R curvature and ultra-wide 178-degree viewing angle, gives users a complete view of their surroundings, and ensures full immersion in every scene.

A host of integrated gamer-friendly features also gives users an extra edge on their adversaries with Game Mode, which contains a dynamic gamma setting that intuitively adjusts color and contrast of each individual scene to produce a true-to-life environment. The CJ791’s four milliseconds (ms) response time also ensures smooth transitions between scenes, making it ideal for racing, flight simulation and first-person battle games.

For more information about Samsung’s CJ791 QLED monitor, please visit Samsung’s CES booth #15006, on Level 1 of the Central Hall in the Las Vegas Convention Center from January 9-12, 2018.

Samsung Electronics announced today that, at CES 2018, it will introduce three innovative new projects, developed from its C-Lab (Creative Lab) program. In addition, seven start-ups which have been spun off from C-Lab will showcase their newly released commercial products at CES to explore new business opportunities.

“Since launching five years ago, our C-Lab program has gained exciting momentum across Samsung, helping foster an innovation culture, and providing avenue for our creative, talented employees to pursue innovative new projects. We will continuously introduce innovative projects through our C-Lab program” said Jaiil Lee, Vice President and Head of the Creativity & Innovation Center at Samsung Electronics.

The three new C-Lab projects include:

S-Ray (Sound-Ray) is a portable directional speaker which users can carry anywhere. While existing directional speakers are primarily stationary due to their size and price, S-Ray is a directional speaker that is made much smaller, lighter and portable with its unique system module while maintaining the advantages of conventional directional speakers and/or earphones. S-Ray helps people avoid having to put on earphones for a long time which can cause ear pain, and avoids the distractions to others Bluetooth speakers can cause. At CES 2018, S-Ray will showcase a variety of product options such as Neckband, Handy and smartphone cover.

GoBreath is a recovery solution for people who have experienced lung damage and suffer from postoperative pulmonary complications after general anesthesia. Patients commonly need to exercise deep breathing for faster recovery, with one of the conventional methods through use of an inspirometer. However, deep breathing becomes challenging for patients who have undergone surgery due to lung pain. A doctor at Samsung Medical Center came up with the concept of GoBreath, which helped his patients recover faster, and consists of a portable device and mobile app that can teach patients basic techniques such as inspiration, coughing or deep breathing. Patients can refer to exercise guidelines and check how well their lungs have recovered through the app. GoBreath even offers a web and cloud service for doctors to help them monitor their patients’ recovery progress as well as provide reminders to practice.

Relúmĭno glasses are smart visual aid eyeglasses to help people with vision challenges see images clearer when they are reading a book or viewing an object. The Relúmĭno app was first showcased at Mobile World Congress 2017, and Relúmĭno glasses were subsequently developed to enable people with visual impairments to utilize the technology more comfortably and discreetly. The glasses work in conjunction with a smartphone, utilizing its processors and batteries, which makes Relúmĭno glasses light and comfortable to wear. The smartphone processes images from videos projected through the camera of the glasses, and the processed images are floated into the display of the Relúmĭno glasses to help the wearer see things better.

In addition to these projects, seven start-ups which have been spun off from Samsung C-Lab, including LINKFLOW, Kitten Planet, lululab, KIDSOFT, Mangoslab, Innomdle lab, and analogue plus, will participate at CES 2018 to showcase their newly released commercial products and explore global business opportunities.

As notable example, the wearable camera FITT360 by LINKFLOW was awarded the CES 2018 Innovation Award in the Digital Imaging category. Initially, the start-up focused on personal travelers in the B2C market, but recently has been focusing on a B2B model for the security industry with a model which features extended battery capacity.

Created in December 2012, C-Lab is an in-house idea incubation program that encourages a creative corporate culture and nurtures innovative ideas from Samsung employees. The program supports the development of ideas from all areas of the business. Introduced in 2015, the C-Lab spin-off policy helps Samsung employees who have successfully completed C-Lab projects to launch their own start-ups. Samsung supports the spin-off companies through seed money investment and business consulting to accelerate their growth, while guaranteeing their independent management.

For more information, please visit the booth #51765~#51774 in Sands, Hall G (Eureka Park Marketplace) from January 9 – 12, 2018.

Appendix

1. LINKFLOW (www.linkflow.co.kr)

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced today that the company will unveil a new premium lifestyle soundbar at CES 2018, the NW700 Soundbar Sound+. The wall-mountable NW700 Soundbar Sound+ succeeds the award-winning MS650 Sound+ model and incorporates sound-enhancing features, such as distortion-cancelling, wide-range tweeters and multi-speaker control, all technologies developed at the Samsung Audio Lab in Valencia, California.

The NW700 Soundbar Sound+ sports a slim and sleek external design optimized for wall mounting underneath Samsung’s super-thin televisions. The 53.5mm-width soundbar, which seamlessly works with a wall mount TV, is 41% narrower than the previous soundbar model, allowing users to achieve harmonious interior. The monolithic soundbar adopts three channels and slim sound technology to deliver dynamic and targeted sound for an immersive listening experience. The body of the soundbar also has a built-in woofer, eliminating the need for an external subwoofer and contributing to a clean, slender design for a home entertainment space.

“Samsung continues to invest in product development that fuses lifestyle and technology in a seamless, innovative manner,” said Jurack Chae, Senior Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “With our NW700 Soundbar Sound+, we are not only committed to superior product design, but also to delivering unmatched sound quality to our consumers.”

The technology found in the NW700 Soundbar Sound+ and its previous iterations has been routinely praised for helping the soundbars achieve powerful bass, cohesive soundstage and impressive clarity. The distortion-cancelling technology has also been recognized for effectively syncing the drivers in the soundbar to produce a clear and powerful sound. The technology works by predicting distortion at the end of the speaker movement and making the necessary adjustments before the distortion actually takes place. This results in smooth, distortion-free bass tones.

The NW700 Sound+ also supports three sound modes including Standard Mode, Surround Mode, which is used to expand surround sound performance, and Smart Mode, which automatically adjusts volume and surround sound effects.

As one of Samsung’s newest lifestyle products, the NW700 Soundbar Sound+ is well-suited to be seamlessly integrated into most of home’s décor and home theater system. For more information, please visit Samsung’s CES booth #15006, on Level 1 of the Central Hall in the Las Vegas Convention Center from January 9-12, 2018.

Featuring a thoughtfully refined design that allows users to do so much more using the built-in S Pen, Samsung’s new Notebook 9 Pen was built for those who are always exploring, always creating, and never content to simply stand still.

The 2-in-1 PC’s cutting-edge specs, including a powerful 8th Generation Intel® Core i7 processor, and exceptional portability make it incredibly versatile, and perfect for those who are always on the move. Let’s explore how Samsung optimized the premium device to feature some truly amazing moves of its own.

Designed for Function and Flexibility

The Notebook 9 Pen’s slim, single-shell body is as seamless and refined as ever, and now even more portable thanks to Samsung’s use of Metal12. This ultralight magnesium-aluminum alloy allows the notebook to weigh in at just 995 grams (2.2 pounds), which makes it one of the lightest in its class. In addition, the alloy itself has been treated with an advanced Micro Arc Oxidation (MAO) process that provides its surface with a tough oxide coating, enhancing durability.

The S Pen seamlessly slots into the bottom of the notebook, so it’s always there when you need it. And when inspiration strikes, the 360-degree convertible hinge lets you instantly transform the device from a notebook into a tablet, allowing you to comfortably access the vibrant, 13-inch RealView display from any angle.

Content depicted on the premium display is bright and accurate, thanks to the device’s peak brightness of 450 nits and ability to display 95 percent of the sRGB color space. This allows the notebook to produce lifelike colors and picture quality, which makes it a perfect fit for graphic designers, and makes everything from viewing a video to reading or browsing the web more immersive and engaging.

The display also features a wide, 178-degree viewing angle that allows it to be seen clearly when users adjust their position, or when they are viewing or collaborating on content with friends or colleagues.

Because the Notebook 9 Pen was designed for mobility, it also supports a variety of convenient charging methods that make it easy for users to power up on the go – even without the device’s compact adaptor. The notebook may be easily charged via a compatible smartphone charger or an external battery pack, and even supports fast charging.* So you won’t have to worry about a misplaced adaptor impeding your productivity.

S Pen Optimization

The Notebook 9 Pen’s S Pen is impeccably precise, featuring a 0.7mm tip and capable of recognizing up to 4,096 levels of pressure. This level of precision, along with the implement’s ability to detect when it’s been tilted, evokes an incredibly natural writing experience and allows artists to express fine details with ease.

The notebook automatically detects when the S Pen has been pulled out and springs into action, instantly launching the Air Command menu that houses convenient shortcuts for a wide array of S Pen features. These features, which will be familiar to users of Samsung’s Galaxy Note smartphones, include Smart Select, which lets you conveniently crop and capture a desired portion of your screen, and Screen Write, which allows you to easily mark up screen-captured images. And because the S Pen is – as always – battery-free, it’s always ready to help you express yourself and be productive.

Speaking of which, the Notebook 9 Pen also features several built-in tools, including versatile apps like Autodesk SketchBook and the Samsung Notes app, designed to help users express themselves and work more effectively. These apps add comfort and convenience to everything from doodling to writing, sketching, painting and more, and make each task that much more enjoyable.

Boost Productivity with Voice Notes and teamPL

The Notebook 9 Pen’s Voice Note function offers users an innovative way to record their – and others’ – brilliant ideas.

The software allows you to record crystal clear audio via the Notebook 9 Pen’s ‘far-field’ microphone, which utilizes advanced hardware, algorithms and noise suppression technology to isolate and record sounds even from distant sources. The function makes it easy to locate specific points in a recorded audio file – so finding a key highlight won’t require you to listen to the recording all over again – while also allowing you to mark and take notes within the file itself.

Another Notebook 9 Pen feature designed to help students and professionals work and study more efficiently is teamPL, a software solution that allows you to easily share what’s displayed on your screen with up to five friends or colleagues connected to the same network. Utilizing this feature will allow you to instantly show others what you’re working on or looking at, and help your team collaborate more effectively.

Seamlessly Sync Your Smartphone

The Notebook 9 Pen also boasts support for a variety of Samsung apps designed to streamline how users share files, capture memories, and communicate.

Support for the Samsung Link Sharing app makes it simple for users to share files stored on their PC – including photos, videos and documents – with their family, friends and colleagues. Transfers may be facilitated to virtually anyone with another PC or a smart device. **

The device’s Samsung Gallery integration, meanwhile, offers simple tools to streamline how users manage their most precious files: their photos and videos. Each time you use your phone*** to capture a memorable moment, Samsung Gallery will automatically sync the photo or video via Samsung Cloud so that it appears in the Notebook 9 Pen’s version of the app. This provides you with more freedom – and space – to manage and share your content.

Finally, the notebook’s Samsung Messages app allows you to instantly reply to incoming texts and message any of your contacts without ever reaching for your phone. You can even use the app to drag and drop large files (up to 1GB) saved on the Notebook 9 Pen to share them with contacts saved on your phone. ****

Seriously Secure

Along with packing a slew of seriously fun features, the Notebook 9 Pen comes preinstalled with Samsung Security, a seriously stout security solution designed to enhance users’ privacy and safeguard sensitive data.

The software’s Privacy Folder feature allows users to add an extra layer of protection to sensitive files; the Secret Screen function obscures the notebook’s screen so that it’s visible only to the user; and Block Recording ensures that your webcam is protected from unauthorized access and recording.

The Notebook 9 Pen’s Windows Hello support adds enterprise-grade biometric security to logins to streamline how users access their device and protect their data. The IR front-facing camera’s facial-recognition technology allows you to unlock your notebook with a glance, while the built-in fingerprint sensor lets you securely log in to your device, websites, and other services with a simple swipe – no password typing required.

The Notebook 9 Pen is currently available to preorder in Korea, and will launch in select markets in the first quarter of 2018.

* Requires either an AFC type Samsung battery pack, or a QX2.0 (Qualcomm) type battery.

Samsung Electronics today announced the new Samsung Notebook 9 Pen and three new versions of the Samsung Notebook 9 (2018), offering a mobile computing experience that matches how people are using their PCs: whether at work, on the go and everything in between. Designed to deliver the best in mobility, these four new notebooks ensure a computing experience that is powerful, portable, connected and secure. When paired with the latest productivity tools and services available from Samsung, the Notebook 9 Pen and Notebook 9 (2018) are the perfect complement to match a lifestyle where work or play can happen anywhere and at any time.

“At Samsung, we have long felt that technology must fit within the lives of the consumer, not the other way around. Over the past several years, the lines between our personal and professional lives have started to blur creating the need for technology that allows us to connect, collaborate and share from anywhere,” said YoungGyoo Choi, Senior Vice President of the PC Business Team, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “The new Samsung Notebook 9 Pen and enhanced Samsung Notebook 9 (2018) and Samsung Notebook 9 Pen offer our customers premium, powerful and portable devices that provide the tools to securely work from anywhere, breaking the boundaries of previously accepted standards for what a notebook should be.”

Samsung Notebook 9 Pen: Superb Flexibility, Portability with S Pen and Convertible Hinge

The Notebook 9 Pen brings a thoughtfully refined design to the 2-in-1 PC. Its full metal chassis with premium magnesium aluminum – lighter than aluminum – alloy called Metal12 provides durability while keeping it super light at 2.2 pounds. The 360 degree hinge provides flexibility for users to convert to a tablet from a laptop with ease by rotating the keyboard behind the screen for convenience.

The Notebook 9 Pen provides ultimate convenience with a built-in, refined S Pen that gives users the freedom to doodle, write, sketch, paint and more. The S Pen is battery free, built into the device and designed for immediate use. The S Pen can recognize 4,096 levels of pressure with a fine 0.7mm tip and convenient tilt detection to allow a more natural writing and drawing experience. When the S Pen is removed from the notebook, Air Command automatically launches providing convenient S Pen shortcuts, Samsung Notes and Autodesk Sketchbook, so that users can write, draw and create immediately.

Samsung Notebook 9 (2018): Powerful Design, yet Lightweight and Thin

With three different versions offering a 13.3” to a 15” screen and enhanced graphics capabilities, the Notebook 9 (2018) weighs up to 2.84 pounds and measures 15.4mm, one of the lightest and thinnest notebook devices in its class. The bezel around the screen measures 6.2mm providing a more immersive experience. This means great portability without sacrificing screen size, as well as a stronger, more durable metal body featuring Metal12 which provides durability while keeping it super light.

The device also provides always-on power thanks to the 75Wh Hexacell battery, Samsung’s largest and most powerful battery placed inside a notebook. For the times when charging is necessary, it also supports fast charging.

Living a Blended Lifestyle
