Samsung Electronics today announced the launch of the new Less Microfiber Filter, an external washing machine filter designed to significantly reduce plastic microfiber emissions during laundry cycles. Designed with inspiration from apparel maker Patagonia and expertise from the global ocean conservation organization Ocean Wise, the filter builds on the success of last year’s Less Microfiber Cycle to substantially cut microplastics and enable sustainable laundry washing that is both effective and effortless. The new filter is now available in Korea and the U.K. and will roll out to other countries in the third quarter.

“With microplastics emissions to our oceans continuing to increase and regulations being strengthened in many countries, as well as microplastics becoming a growing health concern for people everywhere, Samsung worked with Ocean Wise and Patagonia to engineer technology to prevent the release of microplastics from our daily life,” said Moohyung Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D Team of Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “With innovations like the Less Microfiber Filter and Cycle, Samsung is enabling Everyday Sustainability in a wider array of products and making eco-conscious daily practices second nature in the home.”

From the Less Microfiber Cycle to the Less Microfiber Filter: Stopping Microplastics Before They Enter the Ocean

To enable customers to cut microplastic emissions from their laundry, Samsung first developed the Less Microfiber Cycle, a wash course that reduces microplastic shedding by 54%1 in part by leveraging Samsung’s proprietary Ecobubble technology. By using bubbles to help dissolve and absorb detergent, less heat and energy is required to wash clothes, resulting in reduced abrasion which in turn prevents microplastic emissions.

The Less Microfiber Filter takes this a step further, preventing up to 98%2 of microplastics released during laundry from escaping into the ocean, equivalent to eight 500ml plastic bottles per year3 when used four times a week. In addition, to help more customers get involved in cutting microplastic emissions, the Less Microfiber Filter has a mountable design style that allows it to be used with standard washing machine models, demonstrating the company’s dedication to long-term sustainability and helping customers embrace sustainability at home.

Sustainable Convenience Every Day and at Every Stage of the Product Lifecycle

Samsung is committed to developing new products and technologies for a sustainable future. As we strive to enable Everyday Sustainability, not only should these products be highly effective, they should also be simple, accessible and convenient to use while considering eco-conscious practices in each aspect of product development.

With this in mind, the Less Microfiber Filter is made using recycled plastics — to help incorporate sustainability at every stage of its lifecycle — and was designed to be long-lasting and easy to maintain. The filter’s blades capture the microplastics with a 65-70 micrometer wide mesh, then redirect and compress these microplastics to one side, meaning the filter only needs to be cleaned roughly once a month.

By connecting with Samsung’s intelligent connectivity platform SmartThings, the filter tracks how full it is from 0 to 100%, alerting users when cleaning or other troubleshooting is required via the SmartThings app. The Less Microfiber Cycle, meanwhile, is available as a preset option on select Samsung washing machines from 2022 and can be activated with just the press of a button. It will be expanded to users of previous Wi-Fi enabled Samsung washing machine models through an over the network update this year.

Innovation for a Brighter Future

The development and launch of the Less Microfiber Cycle and Filter are just the latest steps in Samsung’s sustainability journey.

“Samsung Electronics and Patagonia’s efforts to reduce the harmful microplastics emissions being released into our oceans do not end here,” said Vincent Stanley, Director of Philosophy at Patagonia. “We look forward to bringing this collaborative, sustainable spirit to further projects with industry partners to create even more solutions that combat marine pollution.”

Beyond the launch of the Less Microfiber Cycle and Filter, Samsung will continue developing new technologies and products that make Everyday Sustainability an effortless part of daily life for customers everywhere and continue to work with partners like Patagonia to deliver tomorrow’s eco-conscious household solutions.

1 Tested with 2kg load of 100% polyester hoodies, comparing Synthetics cycle on Samsung Conventional model WW4000T and the Less Microfiber Cycleon WW9400B.

IFA 2022, Europe’s biggest home appliances trade show, was held in Berlin, Germany from September 2 to 6 and showcased many different environmental products from various companies, grabbing the attention of visitors from all over the world.

Samsung Electronics’ booth was no exception to this. One of the newest innovations at Samsung’s booth was the company’s new microplastic reduction washing machine. The washing machine was developed in collaboration with Patagonia and the Ocean Wise Plastics Lab, in order to address microplastic shedding, one of the main causes of marine pollution.

To learn more about the development process, Samsung Newsroom sat down with the four experts who worked together to create the washing machine: Woong Choi, who worked on product planning, Josephine Park, who worked on marketing, Chiwoong Yoon, who worked on ESG strategy, and Wanhee Lee, who worked on the washing machine’s development and performance.

▲ (From the left) The experts who participated in the project to develop the microplastic reduction washing machine: Chiwoong Yoon, who worked on ESG Strategy, Josephine Park, who worked on marketing, Wanhee Lee, who worked on the washing machine’s development and performance, and Woong Choi, who worked on product planning

Global Cooperation With the Common Goal of Marine Environment Preservation

Early last year, executives from Samsung and Patagonia met to begin discussions on developing a solution to reduce microplastics that are shed from clothes when washed. Microplastics have a major impact on the environment, threatening not only the marine ecosystem but the health of the humans as well. It is estimated that the ocean floor alone is now home to over 14 million tons of microplastics,1 with 35 percent of marine microplastics coming from laundering clothes made from synthetic fibers.2 Scientists have also discovered that humans ingest the equivalent of one credit card of microplastics per week from the air we breathe and the water we drink.3

▲ Chiwoong Yoon, who worked on ESG strategy to develop the microplastic reduction washing machine

“Since Samsung’s Digital Appliances division was already conducting its own research to reduce microplastics, we were able to form a mutual understanding and agreed to work together quickly,” said Yoon, who acted as manager throughout the collaborative project. “The support from Patagonia heavily motivated us and gave us the confidence to accelerate the development of a practical solution and commercialize it.”

In order to accurately and objectively verify that microplastics were being reduced, the companies needed help from a research institute in the field. Patagonia introduced the nonprofit marine conservation research organization Ocean Wise Plastics Lab to Samsung. Samsung formed hypotheses based on various research materials provided by Patagonia and, with the help of Ocean Wise Plastics Lab, conducted actual tests to find the most effective laundering method for reducing microplastic shedding as well as the standard for measuring how effective the reduction was.

New washing machines are not the only ones to benefit as all connected washers will also gain access to this course by the end of the year through updates.

Reducing Microplastic Emissions by 54 Percent With Ecobubble Technology

A year after the development began, Samsung finally succeeded in developing a laundry cycle that is specifically designed to reduce microplastic shedding by up to 54 percent.4 The unique technology both effectively washes clothes and reduces the release of microplastics, all while maintaining the quality of your clothes.

▲ Wanhee Lee, who worked on the washing machine’s development and performance in the project

“Samsung’s proprietary Ecobubble was utilized to reduce the emission of microplastics,” said Lee. “Ecobubble enables laundry detergent to be dissolved and absorbed by the water quickly to effectively remove dirt and stains. So, it minimizes the abrasion of clothes, which is the main cause of microplastic shedding, and it protects the fabric as well.” He added, “Ecobubble effectively cleans clothes even when using cold water, which requires up to 70 percent5 less energy.”

Sincerity, Expertise and Hope as the Drivers for Success for the Future Generation

Aside from simply creating a new product for consumers, the collaborative development is a meaningful and proactive move to preserve the health of the marine environment and as such has garnered a lot of attention. Despite the project’s success, there were difficulties to overcome throughout the course of development.

“There was no standard for measuring the effectiveness of microplastics reduction from laundry in the first place,” said Lee when sharing the difficulties he faced during the initial development process. “We had to start by exploring and questioning the basics, such as how to collect microplastics from a vast amount of water from laundry, which ingredient would be most effective, how to execute each step of the plan, how to design the washing machine and more,” he explained.

“It was not easy for the employees of different companies with different corporate cultures to see the issue from the same perspective,” Yoon said. “But in the end, we were able to achieve a good result because all our expertise came together, including the clear direction of the project based on Patagonia’s support and Ocean Wise Plastics Lab’s technology to measure the reduction of microplastics,” he said.

A Courageous Attempt That Prioritizes the Impact on the Environment

▲ Woong Choi, who worked on product planning in the project

“I thought that washing machines had an indirect effect on the environment through the pollutants in the laundry wastewater or through electricity energy consumption,” said Choi who was in charge of product planning within the project. “But once I saw the actual figures of the effects, I was quite shocked. The fact that Samsung made a proactive move by cooperating with a global clothing brand and an environmental organization was such a courageous act, especially since it is not easy for anyone to address the issue of microplastics,” he added.

“When it comes to talking about the microplastic reduction washing machine, we have to start from the fact that microplastics are discharged in the course of laundry at all, which may not be a comfortable topic from a manufacturer’s perspective,” said Park who worked on communications and marketing for the project. “However, we prioritized the impact on the environment and developed a product that can contribute to the protection of the marine environment. I’m proud to have been involved in the entire process of this meaningful project.”

“From the marketer’s perspective, it is of course important to let consumers know how good this project is and how it is different from other projects. But at the same time, I hope consumers can also see our values, including our sincere concern for the environment and our courageous attempt as well,” she added.

Continuing Solution Development and Open Cooperation for a Healthy Environment

These days, consumers are becoming more interested in environmental products. When asked about their plans and goals going forward after working on this project, the interviewees expressed their desires to further the project’s impact.

“Furthermore, in October in the European market, we’re going to release the Bespoke AI washing machine, which uses 10 percent less electricity than the criteria needed for an A Grade rating under the new European energy labelling system. It will also be released in Korea as well afterward.”

▲ Josephine Park, who worked on marketing in the project

“When it comes to saving energy, each person plays a crucial role. Samsung’s washing machines will lead the way to help people easily practice sustainable, eco-conscious living,” Park said.

Finally, the interviewees offered some tips about how consumers can help to protect the environment while doing laundry.

“Rather than washing a small amount of clothes frequently, washing a large amount of clothes all at once and choosing a lower water temperature for clothes that are not too dirty can save both energy and the amount of water used,” Lee said.

“In many cases, people tend to use too much detergent when washing clothes,” Park said. “But it’s better to reduce the amount you use to an appropriate level. Samsung’s washing machines have an AI Wash mode that measures the weight of the load and the level of soiling to automatically use the right amount of detergent. I highly recommend users use this feature.”

Through IFA 2022, Samsung not only showcased its microplastic reduction washing machine but also emphasized its vision for sustainable living by showcasing environmental products and solutions. Samsung will continue to work to make the planet healthier by both reducing its environmental impact and helping users do the same through new partnerships and innovative products.

Samsung Electronics today announced how the company’s eco-conscious appliances deliver the ultimate energy savings at home by adding an additional 10% savings to the highest industry standard under the new European energy labeling system.1

“As we set our vision on becoming the No. 1 energy efficient appliance brand, we are excited to showcase the Samsung appliances and technologies that are making it possible,” said Hyesoon Yang, EVP and Head of Customer Experience of the Digital Appliances at Samsung Electronics. “Thanks to SmartThings Energy maximizing the features of Samsung appliances, users can enjoy the latest in appliance technologies while also being eco-conscious at home.”

No. 1 Energy Efficient Refrigerators Offer Advanced Cooling and Power Savings

When it comes to at-home sustainability, the kitchen is a key focus area because it houses large appliances that are perpetually running. Fresh food storage, for example, requires refrigerators to maintain continuous operation and, consequently, a consistent power draw.

Addressing this, Samsung’s refrigerators were designed to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint while optimizing food storage. Samsung refrigerators are rated No. 1 in energy efficiency in their category and, in fact, provide an added 10% extra savings on top the current highest energy rating standard. Also, SmartThings Energy with AI Energy Mode helps intelligently reduce energy usage for refrigerators by up to 30%.2

SpaceMax technology allows for a spacious interior in refrigerators without adding bulk externally, using advanced high-urethane insulation technologies. As a result, more food can be stored in optimal temperatures without the need for more power.

In addition, innovative technologies such as Twin Cooling Plus, CoolSelect+ Plus and Metal Cooling help quickly cool and keep temperatures matched to food types.

Twin Cooling technology optimizes and maintains refrigerator temperature and humidity in a very stable range within 0.5°C fluctuations. CoolSelect+ Plus allows for the flexibility of selecting from four different options inside compartments, ranging from freezer to cooling, meaning different foods are kept in matching condition without wasting energy lowering temperatures unnecessarily. In addition, once properly chilled, Metal Cooling helps keep the cold air inside for longer, minimizing the changes in food temperatures and ensuring that food stay fresh for longer while saving power.

Wash Clothes For Less With No. 1 Energy Savings, AI-Powered Washers

Samsung’s Bespoke AI Washers feature the latest in washing technologies providing users the quickest, most powerful laundry experience while also offering an extra 10% energy savings on top of the highest energy rating standard. Plus, thanks to AI Energy mode, the washers can cut energy usage by up to 70%3 placing them as No. 1 in energy savings in their category.

Adding to a sustainable laundry experience, SpaceMax technology provides a spacious 11-kilogram capacity so users can do larger but fewer loads of laundry, reducing the overall wash and dry cycles for a long term. SmartThings Energy with AI Energy Mode4 optimizes laundry cycles with technologies such as Ecobubble, which cuts energy usage by delivering powerful cleaning with cold water5 without having to heat water.

Furthermore, AI Washer and Dryer uses advanced sensors to detect the weight and softness of the fabric in each load. This data is then analyzed, providing washing and drying cycles that are optimized and matched to the garments’ materials, saving the user both time and energy. The feature reduces the amount of water usage by 24% and also dispenses the correct amount of detergent, using the weight of the load to calculate the optimal supply.

Improve Home Comfort While Reducing Your Carbon Footprint With Samsung’s Eco Heating System

Offering a complete sustainable home package, Samsung’s Eco Heating Systems (EHS) provides floor heating and hot water while offering an extra 10% energy savings above the current highest standard. Using a new Scroll Compressor, the EHS compresses refrigerant at a much higher pressure than traditional heating units, while Flash Injection Technology and a large heat exchange area increase the flow of heat transference.

We’ve all seen the heartbreaking images of once beautiful beaches that are now covered in plastic waste. This problem means that birds, turtles and other forms of sea life are now required to share their habitats with endless mounds of bottles, straws and other discarded plastics.

So far, most of our efforts to clean up the ocean have focused on single use plastic products. But the plastics we see are actually only the tip of the iceberg. Below the ocean’s surface lurks an invisible threat that grows more serious by the day, and makes the development of eco-conscious products and solutions more important than ever.

Our Oceans: A Sink for Microplastics

Scientists estimate that the ocean floor alone is now home to over 14 million tons1 of what are called “microplastics”. These tiny pieces of plastic are often too small to see with the naked eye, but can also measure up to 5mm in size.

But, while often incredibly small, these microplastics can have devastating effects on ecosystems and even human health. Around the world, more than 80 percent of tap water samples contain traces of microplastics.2 One study from the World Wildlife Fund estimates that humans ingest the equivalent of one credit card of plastic per week3 through the air they breathe and the water they drink.

Where Do Microplastics Come From?

Microplastics can enter the environment in a few different ways. The first is when they’re released directly as small plastic particles, such as microbeads. These substances are known as primary microplastics. The second way is when larger plastics from everyday items break down over time into tiny pieces. These types are known as secondary microplastics.

But another form of microplastic that many people aren’t aware of is the kind that is released from our laundry when we wash synthetic textiles. That includes your favorite fleece sweater, your nylon jacket, and yes, even those comfy spandex yoga pants. From manufacturing these fabrics to washing them, microplastics can be created throughout many stages of these products’ lifecycles.

Partnering Up To Stop Microplastics

However, there is hope on the horizon that we will soon be able to start eliminating microplastics from our waterways. NGOs, governments and brands around the world have taken note of the rising number of these invisible but harmful plastics and are taking important actions to help keep them out of our oceans. Add-on filters for washing machines and protective laundry bags are just some of the solutions that are now available to help capture some of the microplastics released during washing.

Working With Samsung To Stem the Tide

While add-on filters and laundry bags are a start, more holistic solutions are needed to cut down the amount of microplastics that are released throughout a product’s lifecycle. That’s why Samsung is working with Patagonia on a joint solution.

Together, the companies are working on a feasible, effective and expandable way to combat the microplastics that result from textiles and laundry. Samsung is taking the goal of cleaner oceans to heart by designing a sophisticated new washing machine that lets people safely wash their favorite garments while minimizing the impact of microplastics. And this eco-conscious solution will come without compromising on the high-performance cleaning and care that Samsung’s washers are known for.

This is only the latest in a long line of steps Samsung is taking to create long-lasting appliances that improve environmental sustainability. Samsung’s washers already use a unique feature called Ecobubble, which lets consumers clean their clothes efficiently, even at low temperatures, by generating a greater amount of bubbles. This helps the detergent quickly penetrate fabrics and remove dirt, all while saving energy and protecting the color and texture of the clothing.

What’s more, the AI Wash feature makes use of sensors to measure the weight of the load and the level of soiling to ensure that the optimal amount of water, detergent and energy is used to get that specific load clean – cutting down water waste, and using less energy in the process.

Collaborations like the one between Samsung and Patagonia can help turn the tide on ocean pollution. With its commitment to sustainable living, Samsung will continue working to design products that minimize its impact on the environment. Because the best way to get plastics out of our oceans is to prevent them from ending up there in the first place.

Recalibrating Our Strategy in a Changing World

The home has always been a central part of lives – it is, after all, where we begin and end most of our days. But now, as many people around the world practice social distancing, home becomes more important than ever.

The pandemic has resulted in all of us re-assessing the spaces in which we live along with the ways we operate and prioritize things in our daily routines. This had led to many people reorienting their lifestyles, personal and professional, to lead the most healthy, sustainable and productive lifestyle possible, whatever the situation they may be in.

Such changes of mindset and habits are in line with the vision Samsung Electronics has for its digital appliances division, one of moving beyond simply manufacturing appliances and towards becoming a truly consumer-centric lifestyle brand. We look to innovate so that consumers can enrich their home experiences and express their own personalities through our appliances in this changing world.

The Home as a Flexible, Personalized Space

As our consumers spend more and more time at home, the boundary between places of work and places of relaxation has shifted and people are increasingly repurposing their space to serve as multi-function spots – be they as a vacation spot, a party room, a makeshift gym, an office space, a bar or a cafe.

Today, the concept of the “home” has become more flexible so as to include all kinds of individual lifestyles and habits. Naturally, we felt that it was time for appliances to evolve in the same way, too.

The Era of Customizable Home Appliances

With our customizable home appliances, Samsung has pioneered a new age in the history of domestic gadgets based on the belief that today’s appliances should go beyond simply helping users complete their housework and that they must take the lead in innovating the lifestyles they fit into. We are constantly listening to our consumers and innovating our portfolio accordingly in a way that will allow us all to reflect our actual lifestyles – no matter how they may change, now or in the future.

Our Bespoke refrigerator line is the forerunner of this new direction. The concept started with on fundamental question: the average consumer users their refrigerator for ten years, a period of time in which so much can change, so way shouldn’t their refrigerator be able to change with them? Getting married, moving to a new city, having children, getting a new job – all of these changes can result in new needs, want and requirements for users of their domestic appliances. Therefore, for each change, the Bespoke line offers a variety of types, colors, and finishes that can answer the call.

However, the Bespoke line is not the only Samsung product to offer such personalization; this capability has expanded beyond refrigerators with our new line of laundry devices that are designed to adapt to user preferences with each use. Equipped with artificial intelligence, the new WW9800T washer learns user-preferred settings and combines this knowledge with big data to recommend the best cycle for optimal washing.

Our AirDresser also serves as a customized garment care solution for a diverse range of lifestyle needs, such as cleaning, sanitizing, or de-wrinkling. Whether your main cleaning priority is your suit jackets, your evening dresses, or your baby’s soft stuffed toys, the AirDresser has a cycle for you to gently steam and sanitize, keeping your lifestyle hygienic. When desiging the AirDresser, we merged sleek, contemporary design with high-performance technology, opening up a whole new appliance category capable of addressing the increasing consumer demand for health and hygiene-conscious products at home.

Keeping Hygiene Top of Mind for Both Indoors and Outdoors

We at Samsung are aware that the pandemic has made consumers much more aware of the need to maintain and manage best-practices hygiene routines, both for themselves personally and also within their homes.

This recent heightened demand for cleanliness has boosted our vacuum cleaner sales in the Latin American region by 350% compared to the previous year. Our global air purifier sales have also increased by 410% from January to July this year compared to the same timeframe last year. What this has led to is that in addition to creating innovative new products like the AirDresser, Samsung is looking closely at its entire existing portfolio through the lens of hygiene, as well.

For example, Samsung’s Clean Station took aim at an inconvenience that most of us accepted as being unavoidable: having dust fly back into the air whenever we emptied our vacuum cleaners’ dustbins. Pairing seamlessly with the Samsung Jet stick vacuum cleaner, the Clean Station lets consumers empty their dustbins right into a disposable bag with the touch of a button – and with no dust escaping back into the air.

Sustainability is Here to Stay

As they spend more time at home, consumers have also become more acutely aware of how their daily habits, including the use of home appliances, can impact the environment. Consumers today are challenging us to be bolder in our pursuit of eco-friendly, energy-efficient, sustainable products that align with their personal values surrounding environmental conservation.

For example, in the midst of the current pandemic, consumers are now shopping for groceries fewer times a week but buying in bulk when they do. This means that many consumers are looking for larger refrigerators but don’t want to see their electricity consumption spike. Samsung’s new RB7300 BMF refrigerator maximizes storage capacity with Samsung’s SpaceMax and applies eco-friendly structures to improve energy efficiency by 30%.

Furthermore, our new lineup of high efficiency washing machines and dryers also reduces washing time by up to 50% and energy usage by 20% thanks to Samsung’s proprietary QuickDrive technology. Additionally, with our EcoBubble technology that is capable of activating detergent even in cold water, consumers can save additional energy that may have been used to heat water.

Looking Ahead: Innovation That Reflects Our Users

Samsung is committed to developing appliances that do more than just clean, cool, and purify. Our trusted home appliances are now being upgraded to the next level with Samsung’s leading IoT and artificial intelligence capabilities which allow our products to communicate with their users and vice versa. Digital appliances are set to evolve into digital “assistants” that understand our patterns of behavior and work to create a home environment optimized for each household.

By continuing our close collaborations with internal research organizations as well as external experts, we hope to introduce home appliances that will truly understand you and your home.

We will always challenge ourselves to find the next big technical breakthrough and deliver on higher performance for users, but we know that technology without purpose leads to nowhere. We will always have our doors open to our consumers and put consumers at the center to create appliances that truly enrich each user’s lifestyle.

Samsung Electronics today announced the global launch of a new full smart laundry lineup and an innovative bottom-mount freezer (BMF) refrigerator.

Headlining the new laundry lineup is the WW9800T washing machine equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) features that customize the laundry process to achieve the same powerful wash with less time, energy and effort, as well as Samsung’s EcoBubble and QuickDrive technology. The new range will first launch in the European market and will expand globally later this year.

The new RB7300 refrigerator delivers core cooling performance while offering large, flexible capacity to meet all types of food storage needs. The RB7300 will first launch in Europe in August this year, followed by the CIS region, China, the Middle East, Latin America and Korea.

Also making its first appearance in Europe is Samsung’s flexible solution for a customized kitchen, the Bespoke refrigerator range. First launching in the Nordic region this October, Bespoke’s availability will expand across the European market over the next year.

“We strive to develop home appliances that can boost lifestyle values while maximizing performance, keeping in mind the desires and needs of our consumers,” said Hyesoon Yang, Vice President of Samsung Electronics. “Our new product ranges offer solutions that help consumers lead customized eco-friendly lifestyles and we will continue to direct our efforts toward creating products that enrich daily lives.”

Save Energy, Time, and Effort With a Customized Laundry Process

The new WW9800T washer brings together Samsung’s most powerful technologies that cut down on wash times and energy consumption while providing users with a personalized laundry experience.

Samsung’s revolutionary QuickDrive technology allows the WW9800T to cut washing time by up to 50%, and energy usage by 20%.* The independently moving drum and backplate in the WW9800T allows for more dynamic actions, cleaning garments more thoroughly in less time. Samsung’s Digital Inverter Compressor adds to energy efficiency by utilizing strong magnets for quieter and stronger performance, while using less energy compared to a universal motor.

The new washers also come with Samsung’s EcoBubble technology that maximizes the effect of detergent by turning it into soft bubbles – allowing for faster penetration into fabrics, even in cold water. Colder washes save heating energy, while also protecting the fabrics and colors of garments.

Adding to Samsung’s reliable performance is artificial intelligence, which learns users’ behavioral patterns to recommend cycles and offer a truly personalized laundry experience. With AI Control, the new Samsung washer familiarizes itself with user preferences and combines that knowledge with big data to provide the industry’s first automatic suggestion of wash cycles on its display. Paired with a simple user interface, AI Control eliminates the need for users to scroll through cycles to find the right one, or to input their individualized settings each time. The AI Wash feature uses sensors to detect the laundry load’s weight and soilage, to determine the optimal amount of water and detergent to dispense.

The user convenience extends to the drying process with Auto Cycle Link, which pairs compatible washers and dryers directly to automatically set the best dryer cycle for each load.

All of the appliances in Samsung’s new laundry lineup are compatible with SmartThings, offering users control over laundry settings from their smartphone and features like Laundry Planner and Laundry Recipe to customize laundry routines.

Maximized Storage Space With Freshness that Lasts

Thanks to Samsung’s SpaceMax Technology, the new BMF refrigerator maximizes fridge space without needing wider exterior dimensions that may clash with modern kitchen cabinets. SpaceMax allows the interior walls of the fridge to be much thinner due to its high-efficiency insulation that provides a greater internal capacity of 385L – 18 liters larger than the previous model. The new refrigerator therefore matches the standard 600mm cabinet-depth design while offering more space. This feature is especially welcome now, as grocery-shopping habits are changing; people are reducing trips to the shop to purchase large quantities of groceries at a time, shopping online more, and seeking out ready-to-cook meal kit solutions to minimize food preparation. All these trends lead to the need for greater efficiency when it comes to storage space in refrigerators.

The new Samsung refrigerator is also designed to preserve the freshness of food items twice as long.** Featuring a revolutionary Optimal Fresh+ box that serves as an adjustable drawer, users can choose to either split the drawer into two zones with different temperatures or use it as one. The left side is cooler, so it’s optimized for meat and fish storage, while the right side is great for fruit and vegetables.

The new model ensures that all stored food is properly cooled no matter where it’s placed within the refrigerator. Equipped with the most popular Samsung refrigeration technology features, the new fridge is decked out with All Around Cooling and Metal Cooling for maximum freshness.

The new BMF refrigerator also boasts a contemporary built-in look that introduces an added level of sophistication to any modern kitchen interior. The stainless-steel finish and sleek flat front are representative of Samsung appliances’ simple yet refined design. With a Clean Back that comprises of a smooth metal safety cover for vital coils and cables behind the unit, the BMF refrigerator offers a minimalist approach look and feel.

The compressor for the latest BMF refrigerator automatically adjusts its speed based on cooling demand across seven levels. The advanced compressor thus requires less energy, minimizes noise, and even reduces wear and tear for a durable, long-lasting performance from the refrigerator.

The RB7300 refrigerator and new laundry lineup will be featured at Samsung’s ‘Life Unstoppable’ virtual event on September 2.

*Tested on WW8000T compared with Samsung WW6500K. Saves 50% time and saves 20% energy on Cotton (40℃, half load) cycle with washing performance within ±5%. Based on Intertek data.

**Based on internal testing. Applies when set as MAX mode. Results may vary depending on the level of food freshness, usage conditions and various other factors.

Introduced at IFA 2017, Samsung Electronics’ QuickDrive technology was created to provide consumers with the time-saving laundry solution they’ve always wanted but never had, without compromising washing performance*, energy efficiency, fabric care and durability. The result is a laundry solution that finishes cycles in half the time of conventional washers, while providing a thorough yet gentle clean.

Because Samsung firmly believes in glocalization, in which products are optimized for consumers in different countries, the company strives to craft innovations that cater to the unique lifestyles of consumers in markets around the world.

QuickDrive is a result of these efforts, and the latest product of a line of Samsung laundry technologies that have been met with acclaim in areas such as Europe, the birthplace of the drum washing machine. Each of those previous innovations, which include AddWash and EcoBubble, has enhanced consumers’ lifestyles by resolving key pain points.

When the time came to design the technology that would ultimately become QuickDrive, Samsung surveyed consumers in markets across the globe on the factors that matter most to them when buying a washer. The results indicated that washing performance was a leading determinant, and a washer’s ability to reduce the amount of time required to finish a load of laundry was key when assessing this.

QuickDrive was designed to provide entirely new levels of washing performance. The technology boasts several convenient Samsung innovations that not only drastically speed up laundry cycles, but also make the process much simpler and more energy efficient.

Samsung Electronics today announced its revolutionary new washing machine technology QuickDrive set to be unveiled at IFA 2017 in Berlin. At the heart of the WW8800M washing machine is Samsung’s exclusive QuickDrive technology, which provides consumers the power to dramatically reduce the time it takes to do a load of laundry in half1. On its Super Speed setting, a daily load of laundry completes in just 39 minutes, offering consumers the time-saving solution they always wanted but never had, without compromising washing performance1, energy efficiency, fabric care and durability.

“QuickDrive is the industry’s game changer, dramatically cutting the amount of time it takes for users to do laundry and giving them more time to enjoy life,” said B.S. Suh, Executive Vice President of the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “The new WW8800M washing machine uses QuickDrive technology to provide fast and powerful washing performance, with a range of technologies and smart functionality that make doing laundry so much easier.”

Improved Washing Performance with Samsung’s Unique Technology

Samsung’s QuickDrive technology cuts washing time by 50% and energy use by 20%1 without compromising the cleaning performance. Its unique Q-Drum consists of a large main drum and a plate in the back that rotates independently. Unlike conventional washers that move clothes repeatedly up and down over the course of the cycle, the WW8800M moves clothes from top to bottom in the drum, and the plate in the back of the drum introduces a back and forth movement. It creates a revolutionary dynamic action powered by double forces that quickly, gently and thoroughly remove dirt to deliver an intense and complete wash cycle.

In addition, Samsung’s unrivalled QuickDrive technology was independently tested by Intertek, the world’s largest testing and inspection organization. Intertek confirmed that QuickDrive technology provides the same level of cleaning performance and fabric care as existing products, while reducing washing times.

The new WW8800M also has many of Samsung’s outstanding laundry technologies, like EcoBubble, which provides powerful washing performance by mixing air and water to generate fine detergent bubbles that penetrate fabrics faster and maximize the detergent’s effects even at low temperatures.

Smarter, IoT-enabled Washing Machine for User Convenience

Throughout the washing cycle, QuickDrive offers a range of smart and convenient features. The IoT-ready WW8800M boasts an AI-powered laundry assistant called Q-rator, which provides three key smart features that help manage laundry more conveniently.

Laundry Planner enables consumers to manage a laundry finishing time, freeing consumers to control their schedule on their own terms.

Laundry Recipe gives automatic recommendations for optimal wash cycles based on the information such as color, fabric type, and degree of soiling inputted by the user, eliminating the need for guessing about which cycle is best.

HomeCare Wizard monitors the washer by remote, proactively alerting users about potential problems and providing quick troubleshooting support.

The WW8800M also comes with Samsung’s innovative AddWash, a feature that gives users the ability to add items at any time during the cycle2. From a forgotten sock to a delicate item3 that needs to go in later in the cycle, AddWash even allows users to add detergent or fabric softener at a later time. The combination of the Q-rator and AddWash creates a synergistic effect that further enhances the user convenience, simplifying the laundry process.

Designed for Higher Durability and Cost-efficiency

Finally, the WW8800M is designed for long-lasting performance. Equipped with Samsung’s Digital Inverter Technology, the WW8800M reduces noise and helps reduce energy consumption while providing exceptional durability4, enabling the washer to maintain its outstanding washing performance and fabric care. Additionally, the WW8800M offers various energy-saving features, including the ability to save up to 50% more on energy than the highest A+++ energy-efficiency standard for a wash cycle.5 It also uses a Ceramic Heater+ with a new type of anti-adhesion coating, which ensures up to 55 percent less scale buildup than conventional ceramic heaters6, helping the heater maintain its performance longer with more durability.

Samsung Electronics’ booth will be open at Level 2, City Cube Berlin from September 1 through 6 for IFA 2017.

1 Tested on WW8800M compared with Samsung WW8500K. Saves 50% time on Cotton (40℃, half load) and eCotton cycle with washing performance within ±2%. Saves 20% energy on Cotton (40℃, half load) and Super Speed cycle (40℃, 5kg load), based on Intertek data.

2 The Add Wash door only opens only when the drum temperature is below 50°C.

3 Only fabric items, clothing, detergent and softener can be added.

4 Awarded a 20-year durability certification by the Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies in Germany (Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker – VDE).

5 e-Cotton course energy rating based on EU Energy Label standard.

6 Tested on Ceramic Heater+ compared with Samsung’s original conventional heater of WF60F4E0N0W/ET, based on independent testing of weight variation in hard water.

Samsung Electronics – a global leader in home appliances – announces start of the first export line in washing machines production for deliveries to 20 of Western and Eastern Europe at the plant in Kaluga region. In September production of unique range of AddWash washing machines, equipped with additory miniature hatches for adding extra items during a wash cycle without having to discharge water has also began at the plant.

Since September 2016 Samsung plant in Kaluga region begins delivering washing machines for export deliveries to 20 European countries including Austria, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Italia, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary. The first export load of washing machines was sent to the warehouse in Riga in the beginning of September to be sold in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

Samsung AddWash front loading washing machines are equipped with additory hatches that help to add clothes and detergents during a wash cycle and add previously laundered items only for rinse and wringing cycles. Because of already known Ecobubble technology the washing machines make laundry more effective and turn detergents into foam, that quickly enters fabrics and clears up difficult stains. A vast AddWash range that consists of models with various loading capacities (from 6.5 to 12 kg) and in several color combination is available in Russia. The basis of the range is formed by most popular among Russian customers narrow washing machines 45 cm depth.

“Opening of an export line in washing machines production is an important stage of our plant`s development, – said Lee Haoung Kyun, managing director at Samsung Electronics plant in Kaluga region. – For us it’s not only another expansion of production but also a symbol of recognition of our products` quality. Production standards and quality are two fundamental components of our strategy. Today we see that the plant in Kaluga region is compliant with all European standards and is able to provide premium quality manufacturing innovative high-tech products for Europe.”

“The beginning of export of Kaluga plant’s products to Europe is the best confirmation of the manufacturing range’s high quality, – commented Dmitry Kartashev, Head of the HA Sales Department at Samsung Electronics in Russia. – We are especially happy that the plant quickly explores production of the brand new home appliances models which allows us to offer Russian customers most modern equipment at the best prices. For example, sales of AddWash washing machines with hatches for adding extra items or detergents during a wash cycle that are produced at the plant will start this September. Washing machines that feature this technology has already gained worldwide recognition, which is verified by the “Editors Choice” award from trustedreviews.com, “Best Buy” from which.co.uk, 5 stars mark from lesnumeriques.com, etc.”

For 8 years Samsung has been paying close attention to the development of distributed production in Russia.

Samsung Electronics plant in Kaluga region (Samsung Electronics Rus Kaluga LLC) was opened on September 4, 2008 in the northern part of the Borovsk district on the 85th kilometer of Kievskoe highway (M3). The volume of investments amounted to more than $250 million. Total area of the production workshops is 406,000 square meters. The plant’s complex includes production capacity of the plant, where finished products are put together, printed-circuit boards and microchip production workshop, and thermoplastic molding shops. To date, the plant produces 100% of TVs and monitors, as well as washing machines sold in Russia under the Samsung brand. SRDC logistic center – the main warehouse for all Samsung products imported to Russia – is also located at the plant`s territory.

Supplies of components and raw materials for their production are provided by Russian partners of the plant. As the result the process of production localization is actively developing at the plant. Besides the plant has advantageous location. In November, 2015 Samsung initiated the “New silk road” project – a transport route that connects the region of North East China with consumers and partners in Europe. The projects allows to reduce delivery time and optimize production processes reducing logistic costs.
