One of the most defining characteristics of the Galaxy Note series is the analog relationship it establishes with its users. Furthermore, its signature S Pen enables them to make a physical connection with the device—an attribute that sets it apart from other smartphones.

When designing the Galaxy Note7, Samsung designers spent a great amount of time outside the studio to examine how users interacted with and used their mobile devices on a daily basis.

Rather than using the traditional visually-led approach, they focused on the experience of interacting with the phone’s physical qualities. These efforts allowed them to create the Galaxy Note7, combining innovation and technology with a more user-focused approach.

As a result, the Galaxy Note7 is perfectly symmetrical, merging form and function to provide the comfort, convenience and grip that enable users to do more and get more out of their smartphone. Likewise, Samsung has refined the device’s UX to provide a seamless interaction between the user and the device.

New Curves, Carefully Refined Details

The Galaxy Note7 is the first in the Galaxy Note series to boast a dual-edge display—an addition that stays true to Samsung’s design heritage. To incorporate this elegant aesthetic, Samsung had to find a way to maintain a flat screen surface for writing, while also ensuring enough space for storing the S Pen.

For those reasons, the subtle curves like those on the Galaxy S smartphones wouldn’t suffice. Therefore, Samsung carried out the most advanced 3D thermoforming process ever attempted on a phone to create extremely steep curves with a tighter radius at the very outer edges of the glass so not a single millimeter of writing space would be wasted.

Samsung applied the same radius to the device’s edges on both the front and back of the Galaxy Note7, a different approach than the one used on the Galaxy Note5, which also featured a curved design. This resulted in a device that is perfectly symmetrical—from top to bottom, side to side, and front to back.

To complete the balance, the glass and metal parts of the phone were fused together to allow for a more seamless and even surface. In fact, there are no edges or unnecessary surface protrusions between the different materials. The camera protrusion was also greatly minimized, making the device even easier on the eyes and smoother to the touch. These changes provide a more natural feel in the hand.

An Enhanced Look and Feel

The dimensions of the Galaxy Note7 are also different than those of the previous model. It is now more compact in size with a narrow body, but boasts the same large 5.7-inch screen with a bezel less than half the size of the Galaxy Note5.

Despite the addition of the Galaxy Note7’s iris camera and IR LED sensor, the device’s slim upper bezel is maintained thanks to the new technology.

In addition, the Galaxy Note7’s touch sensor is directly printed on the display panel. The device is also lighter than its predecessor, in spite of its larger battery.

These factors, along with the smartphone’s new dual-edge display and symmetrical design, make for a much better grip. Never before has a Galaxy Note been so easy to hold and operate in one hand.

With a new color offering, the Galaxy Note7 also has a premium look that fits almost any style. Blue Coral, the new hue, follows this year’s color trends, which are less vivid and more tranquil, and is also in line with the phone’s design concept of balance.

Although Blue Coral is beautiful on its own, Samsung, for the first time, decided to create a separate color for the phone’s metallic frame. The resulting color combination is both stunning and calming.

The three existing variants—Black Onyx, Gold Platinum and Silver Titanium—are also available. As a bonus, interactive wallpapers that complement each color have been added.

Strong and Sturdy

Despite its beautiful aesthetic, thanks to its Aluminum 7000 Series metal, the Galaxy Note7 is 1.3 times stronger and 1.2 times more scratch resistant than the metal used on the Galaxy S7.

Also integrated into the design is Corning® Gorilla® Glass5, which has an extremely high resistance to scratches and damages. This new glass is designed to provide further protection against breakage from everyday drops. So much so that in rigorous lab tests, it survived drops onto rough, unforgiving surfaces up to four times better than competitive glass designs.

As the first Note model to be IP68 certified, the entire phone (including the S Pen) is water and dust resistant. As a result, the Galaxy Note7 is now further protected from spills, and can be used in wet environments—even underwater.*

Pure and Simple

Samsung made subtle yet impactful enhancements to the user interface of the Galaxy Note7 to create a more natural, frictionless user experience.

First, the colors, shapes and overall design of the graphical user interface were simplified for a more orderly aesthetic, while the focus was shifted to function, information and content. To enhance consistency, Samsung made the icons uniformly rounded, while simultaneously softening their colors.

The most noticeable changes to the UX, however, are in the Settings and Quick Panel menus, which consist of much simpler graphical interfaces. Here, the menu trees and categories have been simplified* so that tasks can be completed in less steps, with fewer taps.

Finally, the number of Task edge features has increased. Now, users can do even more, such as record an exercise in S Health, create a drawing or view unread emails from the edge of their device.

Thanks to its refined design and outstanding durability, the comfort and convenience of the Galaxy Note7 are unsurpassed. Furthermore, its streamlined and intuitive UX provides the seamless experience that users have come to expect. Pushing the boundaries of design, the Galaxy Note7 features true craftsmanship and industry-leading innovation.

Sometimes the smallest tasks can take the most time. And in today’s fast-paced world, who doesn’t have a never-ending list of things to do? Wouldn’t it be great if there were a tool that could help you get all the small stuff done faster?

Now there is, with the enhanced edge screen and new edge screen features—part of the most recent OS upgrade to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Samsung has taken the unique user interface of the beautifully curved edge screen to the next level, making it faster and more convenient than ever to perform daily tasks and get the information you need, all with a simple swipe and tap. Check out the latest updates and new features.

Bigger Is Better

When the dual edge screen was first introduced, it distinctly illustrated Samsung’s innovation prowess. With it, users were able to quickly connect with the most important people in their lives, and could more easily access their favorite apps all in one place. But, at 260 pixels wide, there were limitations in how much content could be displayed on the edge panel.

Now, however, the company has enhanced the user experience of the edge panel by making it an option for users to widen it to an impressive 550 pixels, thus enabling more content to be displayed. This upgrade has also allowed for the addition of new features, as well as improvements of existing ones.

A widened edge panel allows for even more content to be displayed

Unique Usability

The edge screen all but eliminates the need to navigate disorganized home screens and continuously open and close apps. One way it does this is through edge panels, quick access screens that provide shortcuts to information and tasks. Users can now customize up to nine panels, including the People edge and Apps edge panels.

People edge lets users arrange their favorite contacts in a single easy-to-access area. Previously, the feature displayed small photo icons of the user’s top five contacts which linked to contact profiles; now, however, contact names are displayed below the photographs for a more intuitive experience. Furthermore, a shortcut to the settings menu has been included for easier navigation.

People edge, before and after the OS upgrade

Likewise, Apps edge—a panel of one’s most frequently used apps—has also been updated. With all the expanded space of the upgraded edge panel, users can now add ten apps instead of five. In addition to single apps, users can add entire folders for maximum smartphone organization.

Apps edge, before and after (left, middle) and the all new Tasks edge (right)

The newly added Tasks edge panel provides shortcuts to often used app features and tasks, like creating an event in S Planner, setting an alarm or composing a text message. A brand new Quick tools, which includes a ruler, compass and customizable flashlight, has also been added in a separate panel to simplify one’s everyday life.

Quick tools, now available on the wider edge panel

Users can now access all these panels more easily by customizing the Edge handle—the fixed tab that opens the edge panel. All users need to do is simply adjust the place, size and transparency of the Handle in the Settings menu according to their preference. The Handle will not interfere with any apps in use, so users are free to work or play without the edge panel getting in the way.

Customize the Edge handle by location, size and transparency

Open Collaboration for Even More Content

Through Samsung’s ever-growing partnerships, as well as the release of its software development kit (SDK) for the Galaxy S6 edge screen, the company has established a diverse collection of content especially for the wider edge panel. With the strengthening of this third party ecosystem, users can experience a differentiated and richer edge experience.

Among the new edge content that users can download through the Settings menu is Naver Shopping, which was added in response to the growing trend of mobile shopping. And Naver V — an app that features personal video broadcasts of South Korean celebrities—is available in Asian nations where K-pop is popular.

Additionally, Yahoo! Finance, Yahoo! Sports and Yahoo! News come pre-equipped with the OS upgrade, delivering the latest stock reports, the scores of the big games and the biggest headlines right to the edge screen.

Samsung’s feature-rich edge screen display continues to push the envelope with its recent updates. But this is only a sign of what’s to come, as Samsung will continue to refine and enhance the unique edge not only on its existing devices, but also on ones to come.

For this Unpacked Event, Samsung focused on what makes its Galaxy devices stand out—and improved on them. The Galaxy S6 edge+ is obviously bigger than the S6 edge; what’s more important, though, is how this gorgeous smartphone also makes a big step forward both in terms of usability and sharing with people. For the Galaxy Note5, its new S Pen takes versatility to a completely new level.

Life on the Edge

It’s always good to celebrate the things that make us unique. Indeed, it’s these qualities that make life such a fascinating experience. When it comes to Samsung devices, without a doubt the most stand-out feature is the edge screen on the Galaxy S6 edge. This design has been so popular and innovative that Samsung has given the edge even more functionality—and given the phone a larger brother with the launch of the Galaxy S6 edge+.

When the Galaxy S6 edge launched earlier this year, it was heralded as a masterpiece. Its design was breathtaking, its functionality thrilling. But it was the edge user experience that separated it from the pack and that is where Samsung, as a constant innovator, has set a new standard for what a smartphone can do, and how we can use it. That’s why the Galaxy S6 edge+ is a natural progression, because if there’s one thing that Samsung is known for, it’s our dedication to offering our users a better, more complete experience.

Yes, the S6 edge+ is bigger than the S6 edge, which means you’ll have much more real estate on which to create and enjoy visual media. But that’s only the beginning. A whole host of new features makes best use of the edge functionality and can be found only on the Galaxy S6 edge+. They give users a whole suite of new ways to communicate and navigate the device. Firstly, you can now access your favorite apps on the edge display through Apps edge feature as well as your favorite contacts through the People edge. And you can put the edge handler wherever you want, on both sides of the edge display, even on the lock and home screens.

The Apps edge shows shortcuts for most frequently used apps, and you can directly launch each app from this edge screen. The People edge enables users to easily make a call, send a text message, or e-mail your top contacts. New additions to the People edge are Handwriting, Emoticon, and Poking functions. For Handwriting, you can scribble a note on photos already stored on your devices, or take a new picture with your camera for instant annotations. You can, of course, send a handwritten note also without a picture background—and the recipient can save this note to their phone, should they wish to.

One universal language we’ve all got used to when texting is the emoticon. Even if it’s just a simple smiley face, text-based communication has been brightened up thanks to these small symbols. On People edge, senders can choose and send plain and animated emoticons directly the edge, and recipients will see them at their end on their People edge screen.

Want a more tactile means of communication? Poking might be right up your street. There are three different types of poke on People edge: knocking, twinkling, and petals fluttering. Knocking is delivered to the receiver as a haptic and ripple effect, which can be used as a short, secret signal between users. For example, the sender and receiver could agree in advance that three knocks means “coffee break.” Twinkling and petal fluttering will show on the recipient’s device like a drawing by hand.

Ease of use and new ways of communicating with your closest friends and family will make the Galaxy S6 edge+ a stand-out smartphone in a crowded marketplace.

The Write Choice

The Samsung Galaxy Note is famous for its signature feature, the famous S Pen, and for the launch of the Galaxy Note5 it has been much improved. Moving through menus becomes a piece of cake and unlocks new functionalities.

Among the enhanced S Pen functions of the Galaxy Note5 is the new Air Command, with a simpler menu that is focused on the three key functions of the S Pen: Action memo, Smart select, and Screen Write. Air Command also gives access to the three most frequently used apps. Launching Air Command is easy: Simply tap the floating pen icon that automatically appears when you take out the S Pen or press the button on the S Pen itself.

Have you ever had to take multiple screenshots on your device, scrolling down page by page to see more? With Scroll Capture on the Galaxy Note5, you won’t have this hassle anymore. It’s possible to take a screen shot of a long page thanks to “Scroll capture”. Simply tap “Capture more,” and re-tap it until you select “Done”. After you’re done, you can annotate the captured image and then save or share it.

The S Pen also makes it possible to annotate PDFs, so when you’re out of office and need to review a file, you can make notes using the S Pen on your Galaxy Note5.

Samsung has also made it easier to take quick notes with the Galaxy Note5. There’s no need to unlock your device, because it can be a regular memo pad even when the screen is off. Take out the S Pen, and you can immediately start to write on your phone; the screen will still be black, but your writing will show in white.

Both the dual edge display on the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note5’s S Pen are exclusive to Samsung. Yes, both devices are clearly intriguing; however, they also go the extra mile when it comes to user-friendly functionality.

Both smartphones are an evolution of previous Samsung products, but they show what’s at the core of Samsung innovation: constantly improving the user experience.
