When it comes to digital pens, the S Pen is in a class of its own. An iconic companion for Galaxy devices, it has a long history as the ultimate productivity and creativity tool.

That’s thanks in large part to the collaboration between Samsung and Wacom, a leading technology company that specializes in interactive pen displays and graphics tablets. For over 10 years the two companies have collaborated to deliver meaningful innovation to customers.

Now, with the Galaxy Book Pro 360, Samsung and Wacom have drawn on a decade of collaboration to redefine the S Pen for modern computing devices. With a more comfortable grip, and an improved writing experience, the advanced S Pen delivers ultimate creativity and productivity for Galaxy Book Pro 360 users.

“We are honored to have supported Samsung’s S Pen and digital ink technology for over 10 years,” said Nobu Ide, President and CEO of Wacom. “The Galaxy Book Pro 360 demonstrates the strengths of our ever-growing collaboration.”

Since launching the first Galaxy Note in 2011, Samsung has been a pioneer in creating mobile experiences for large-screen devices. Realizing that larger screens had potential for entirely new features, Samsung and Wacom joined forces to create the S Pen. With the success of the partnership, Samsung has brought the S Pen to an ever-expanding line-up of devices, including the Galaxy S21 Ultra, and Galaxy Tab S7/S7+.

What started as a stylus for notetaking has evolved into an iconic creativity and productivity tool that allows users to do everything from creating digital art to snapping photos and controlling professional presentations. Along the way, Wacom has played an integral role in the development of the S Pen.

“Our partnership with Wacom has allowed us to expand the possibilities of mobile devices,” said Inkang Song, Vice President and Head of Technology Strategy Group of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics. “Thanks to our collaborative effort, we’ve delivered truly unique digital pen experiences that have created a loyal Galaxy fan base.”

Those Galaxy fans will find that Samsung and Wacom have once again delivered an unparalleled S Pen experience with the Galaxy Book Pro 360. An upgraded S Pen comes right in the box, delivering a more true-to-life writing and drawing experience.

“The S Pen allows users to get creative, composed, and organized so they can create content and communicate more effectively,” said Ide. “Large-screen devices like the Galaxy Book Pro 360 give people more surface area to play with, giving them more room to create and work.”

Not only do the large display and S Pen give users more ways to create and work, the versatility of the Galaxy Book Pro 360 makes it the perfect device for the new world of remote work and learning.

“With the rapid changes in the way we work and learn, laptops play a more central role in our lives than ever before,” said Song. “The Galaxy Book Pro 360 maximizes productivity and creativity, and with features like the S Pen, users can get more out of their device when taking notes, editing, giving presentations, or creating art.”

Empowering creative expression, the Galaxy Book Pro 360’s S Pen has been made thicker to better mimic a real pen and deliver a more comfortable notetaking experience. Its ergonomic and responsive design also allows artists to sketch and draw more freely. So whether you are jotting down notes during a lecture, taking meeting minutes, or drawing digital portraits, it feels just as comfortable as using a real pen. Best of all, the Galaxy Book Pro 360’s S Pen is compatible with other S Pen-enabled Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy S21 Ultra. However, refining the S Pen’s improved experience wasn’t without its challenges.

While studying the way users engage with the S Pen during intensive tasks on devices like PCs and tablets, Samsung and Wacom discovered there was a need to reduce fatigue when drawing and notetaking, as well as a need to make it feel more like using a real pen.

“We tried various types of materials to coat the pen to keep users from feeling tired after using the S Pen for a long time,” said Ide. “We landed on a special paint ingredient that delivers a better feeling grip. We also refined the pen tip to ensure a reliable writing and drawing experience and more accurate ink line production.”

The Galaxy Book Pro 360’s S Pen represents both a step forward for Samsung’s partnership with Wacom, as well as the next step in digital pen and ink technology. As both companies continue to innovate, the future of the S Pen is more promising than ever. In addition to developing more powerful, and versatile S Pens, Samsung is continuously expanding the range of compatible devices.

“We have worked closely with Wacom to deliver meaningful innovation for the S Pen. Our partnership will continue to grow as we create more innovative devices with S Pen support,” said Song. “Thanks to our collaboration, the S Pen has become an iconic part of the Galaxy experience, and we are always thinking about ways to add value to our customers. From smartphones, to tablets and PCs, Galaxy fans can expect to see more devices with S Pens so they can be productive and creative wherever they go.”

Designed to be highly portable, laptops allow you to meet all of your computing needs regardless of where you are. Amid the era of ‘the new normal,’ laptops are only becoming more essential to our lives as we shift to conducting an increasing amount of our work, hobbies, and interactions online.

Having observed this shift, the designers at Samsung Electronics have looked to further enhance the portability of Samsung laptops while also refining their shape and design. Lighter and thinner, and featuring revitalized colors and materials, the Samsung Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360 were designed to facilitate more frequent use and longer life cycles in order to better complement the way users are living their lives. Samsung Newsroom spoke to the designers from Mobile Communications Business who designed the Galaxy Book Pro and Pro 360 to find out just what went into their innovative designs.

Minimization and Improved Usability

Modern laptops should be both portable enough to carry with you throughout the day and capable enough to be called into use at any moment. Thus, the designers of the Galaxy Book Pro and Pro 360 prioritized lightweight design by making the laptops thinner, lighter and flatter without compromising their high standard of performance. Speaking about the design identity of the Galaxy Book Pro and Pro 360, designer Youngmi Shin said, “We wanted the laptops to have a slim, lightweight form. Portability is becoming even more important as digital lifestyles evolve and diversify, thus we implemented a design that was based on the concept of ‘incomparably slim’.”

But this lightweight aspect does not only apply to the laptops themselves – the designers also redesigned the products’ peripherals and packaging with portability in mind too. In addition to the laptops’ chargers and cables being smaller and lighter, the adapter, mouse, and the laptops themselves can now be stored in a single layer, removing the need for space-consuming stacking. As a result, the size of the Galaxy Book Pro 360 package have been reduced by approximately 39 percent for the 13.3-inch model and 32 percent for the 15.6-inch model.1 Commenting on how the designers achieved these reductions, designer Dongseok Lee related that, “The key was to improve performance while also reducing the size and weight of the Galaxy Pro series. We worked to overcome long-standing technical limitations and optimized the designs to create the slim, lightweight products.”

Comfortability is also a key factor when it comes to products that are going to be used for a long time. Like with a tablet, the Galaxy Book Pro 360 can be drawn on, written on, and used with the new S Pen, which is 1.4 times longer and 2.5 times thicker than the previous model with a modified texture for a firmer grip and a wider touchpad. The power button and fingerprint sensor have also been combined, while the shift key area has been widened as well.

Portable, Yet Resilient

The challenge for the Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360 designers was to reduce the weight and thickness of the laptops while maintaining their battery power, compute performance and durability. To achieve this, AMOLED panels and new battery packs were applied, the internal design of the laptops was modified and durability improvements were made. As a result, the 13.3-inch Galaxy Book Pro 360 is 11.5mm thick and weighs 1.04kg (Wi-Fi model), while the 13.3-inch Galaxy Book Pro is only 11.2mm thick and weighs as little as 868g (Wi-Fi model), making both laptops easy to hold in one hand and fit into bags. On making the Galaxy Book Pro and Pro 360 more compact, designer Hyeryoung Lee said, “We want users to tangibly experience the slimness and lightness of the products as they unbox them. We have reduced the size and weight of the laptop packages to capture the value of ‘reduction’ across the spectrum of the products.”

In order to pack all the necessary parts into a thinner package, the designers minimized the gaps between internal components while using aluminum and magnesium materials to make the laptops lighter. Great effort was put into finding the ideal thickness for the laptops while maintaining their unique durability and luxurious, metal aesthetics. In collaboration with the engineering team, the designers repeatedly reinforced the laptops’ rigidity to gradually elevate their overall quality and integrity. Asked about how the concept of ‘incomparably slim’ was realized, designer Hoyoung Seoc said, “The non-essential components of the laptops were rearranged as efficiently as possible. The tops were made flatter, the gaps between the components were reduced, and the body was trimmed, all while leaving the port untouched. The power key and fingerprint sensor have also been incorporated for improved usability.”

Timeless Aesthetics

As laptops usually have a relatively long life cycle, the designers of the Galaxy Book Pro and Pro 360 put great thought into how to establish a sophisticated appearance that would stand the test of time. The designers analyzed which colors were least likely to go out of fashion while also looking to ensure that the keyboard layout and size would deliver long-lasting comfort. Commenting on what went into the Mystic color series that was decided upon, designer Yoojin Kim said, “We chose colors that are stylish and always pleasing to the eye. Since users generally replace their laptops quite infrequently, we focused on choosing colors that would remain timeless while highlighting the beauty of the laptops’ metal finishes.”

In both the Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360, outer appearance is tailored to reflect internal performance. The Galaxy Book Pro 360’s color schemes include Mystic Navy, which is sturdy and neutral, Mystic Silver, which makes the metallic appearance come alive, and Mystic Bronze, which is robust and emotive. The Galaxy Book Pro has a lighter feel, and comes in an array of brighter, two-tone shades that were created by combining Mystic Blue, Textured Silver, and Mystic Pink Gold with solid black and white tones. Commenting on the differences between the Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360, designer Minyeong Jeong explained that, “There are differences in colors and materials because the two products are fundamentally different. Since the Galaxy Book Pro 360 is a premium model, the materials and colors are more solid. The Galaxy Book Pro, which is more lightweight, comes in brighter colors and is finished in magnesium.”

By providing innovative answers to long-standing questions, the designers of the Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360 have realized a high standard of durability and usability in sleek laptop packages that are portable enough to take everywhere with you. Going forward, Samsung will continue to design products based on a deep understanding of the needs and lifestyles of the users of today.

With all of our mobile innovations within the Samsung Galaxy ecosystem, we aim to shape a new mobile computing experience, ultimately positioning Samsung as a leading innovator in the PC market.”

Q: How does the Galaxy Book series fit into Samsung Galaxy ecosystem?

Response by Patrick Chomet, EVP and Head of Customer Experience Office, Mobile Communications Business

“In designing the Galaxy Book series, we looked across our entire mobile portfolio—from earbuds and Internet of Things (IoT) devices to tablets and smartphones—in search of ways for your devices to work together to help you do more.

The Galaxy Book Pro series expands the Samsung Galaxy ecosystem, keeping you connected to all your devices and ensuring you never need to interrupt your workflow. From the Link to Windows (Microsoft Your Phone) feature to a unified Samsung Notes experience —featuring PDF annotation, voice recording, and auto-syncing— you can enjoy more connected experiences across your mobile devices and Galaxy Book.

With Easy Bluetooth connection, your Galaxy earbuds automatically toggle between your Galaxy Book and smartphone as you switch tasks, while Second screen allows you to expand your Galaxy Book’s workspace onto your tablet. The Galaxy Book series works together seamlessly with the broader Samsung Galaxy ecosystem, so you’re prepared for whatever task comes your way.”

Q: What is the strength of all-new Galaxy Book Pro series?

Response by Woncheol Chai, SVP and Head of Product Planning Team, Mobile Communications Business

“Galaxy Book Pro 360 and Galaxy Book Pro combine the mobility, connectivity and continuity of a smartphone with the performance users expect from a PC to deliver a seamless mobile computing powerhouse experience like no other. With the Galaxy Book Pro series, users can continue to enjoy their favorite Android apps on a Windows PC. With Galaxy Book Pro 360, users can even benefit from a touchscreen and an S Pen for their creative work.

Galaxy Book users can take their devices everywhere thanks to the lineup’s ultra-thin and light designs, while seamless connection to the Samsung Galaxy ecosystem allows users to easily sync with their Galaxy devices. Furthermore, since the Samsung Galaxy ecosystem provides continuity across multiple operating systems by combining the best of them, users can enjoy seamless, unified experience.

We like to think of the Samsung Galaxy ecosystem as offering something new for today’s modern life and routines rather than competing with existing offerings.”

Q: Does the thinness of these devices sacrifice performance?

Response by Hark-Sang Kim, SVP and Head of Visual R&D Team, Mobile Communications Business

“No, in fact the next generation of Galaxy Books provide a boost in performance in every way. Our engineering teams thought through every step of developing and designing devices that are both thin and light and also maximize performance. Based on thermal circulation simulation technologies, we redesigned the fan systems from the ground up to provide better cooling in a smaller package. Thanks to our partnership with Intel, we were able to co-engineer an ultra-thin and light design while never sacrificing the performance of these Evo-certified devices.”

Q: How is Samsung collaborating with Microsoft and Intel on the Galaxy Book and what is the long-term goal of these partnerships?

Response by Patrick Chomet

“We have always believed that the best innovations happen through teamwork. The Galaxy Book series is tailor-made for today’s multi-device world, backed by a vast ecosystem of connected devices and services that elevate your productivity, creativity, performance and entertainment. To realize this, we have embraced open collaboration with Microsoft and Intel to create fully optimized, powerful Galaxy Books that provide continuity across different operating systems and connect with all your devices inside the Samsung Galaxy ecosystem seamlessly.

With Microsoft, we’ve linked PC and smartphone experiences by allowing users to access multiple Android mobile apps simultaneously on their Windows PC. Intel has leveraged five decades of hardware experience to optimize processors around the needs of our users, meaning that your device is ready for any task, at any time, in any place. Together, we’re building a new approach to mobile computing, where smartphones and PCs work together flawlessly across operating systems, and never sacrifice performance nor portability.”

Samsung Electronics today unveiled the Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360, the new generation of mobile computing devices that bring together powerful performance with the mobile DNA of a Samsung Galaxy smartphone. Based on the enhanced Galaxy ecosystem, Galaxy Book Pro and Book Pro 360 work seamlessly with your other Galaxy and IoT devices, making workflow and entertainment across devices smoother—and making life easier. As a staple for the Galaxy Book Pro series, Samsung embraced open collaboration, working with industry-leading partners Intel and Microsoft, to build a new approach to mobile computing, where smartphones and PCs work together flawlessly across operating systems and never sacrifice performance for portability.

“We at Samsung have pioneered countless exciting mobile experiences – new hardware, software, and new ways to help you stay connected and give you the freedom to live your life to the fullest,” said Dr. TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics. “The new Galaxy Book Pro series offers true mobile computing for the connected world, enabling ultra-light, yet mighty portability, boundless connectivity and a window into your wider Galaxy ecosystem.”

The Galaxy Book Pro series is tailor-made for today’s multi-device world, backed by a vast ecosystem of connected devices and services that elevate your productivity, creativity, and entertainment.

Inspired by Mobile Design, Built for Modern Routines

Galaxy Book Pro 360 and Galaxy Book Pro were designed around the needs and routines of modern mobile-first users, designed to make your day-to-day experience simpler, smoother, and more intuitive than ever before. These PCs are Samsung’s most mobile Galaxy Books yet, with Galaxy Book Pro 13-inch weighing just 0.87kg,1 and measuring just 11.2mm thin—no need to make any tradeoffs when packing a purse or bag. The compactness doesn’t come at the expense of durability, either. They are built with military-grade durability2 with 6000-series aluminum,3 the same alloy trusted by leading aerospace manufacturers around the world.

Galaxy Book Pro 13 (Mystic Silver)

With fast and secure LTE4 and 5G5 support, you can turn any location into a mobile office, theater, or conference room—without interruption. Plus, the Galaxy Book Pro series is Wi-Fi 6E Ready,6 so you will be able to enjoy more bandwidth and a faster 6GHz internet connection at home or in the office.

Battery life is crucial to mobility, and the new Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360 are built to keep you going through the day. With long-lasting battery, you’ll rarely have to worry about pausing the task at hand to track down an outlet. But if you do need to charge up in a pinch, the Galaxy Book Pro series supports 65W Fast Charging, so you can top off the device quickly with a USB Type-C adapter.

Immersive Entertainment Experiences With Super AMOLED

Equipped with cutting-edge hardware, the Galaxy Book Pro series is built to take your entertainment to the next level. These are Samsung’s first-ever Windows PCs with Super AMOLED7 displays, meaning this leading technology is now available across the entire mobile portfolio—from smartwatches and smartphones, to tablets and PCs. The display is Eye Care-certified by SGS8 producing less blue light emissions than standard LCDs to help your eyes stay fresh during your next binge-watch after work. Intelligent Color Engine will automatically fine-tune your color space depending on the task at hand.9 Movies and games will appear vivid and intense in DCI-P3 or AMOLED Native color profiles; and for tasks like photo editing, where you want your pictures to look true-to-life, the Galaxy Book Pro series will automatically optimize the color.

All that beautiful content is complemented by crisp sound from AKG speakers. By turning on Dolby Atmos, you can experience even more immersive sound.

More Productivity, Less Interruption With High-Performance Hardware

The Galaxy Book Pro Series is powered by next-generation hardware, including an 11th Gen Intel® Core processor and Intel® Iris® Xe graphics. The Galaxy Book Pro series is verified to the Intel® Evo platform, signifying an industry-leading balance of power, immersive graphics, always-on connectivity, and long-lasting battery life.10 The Intelligent Performance Manager also deftly adapts to your computer position, environment, and system load. Automatically modulating fan noise, temperature and battery usage, it will balance performance and power consumption to deliver a smooth experience that lasts all day so you can say bye to lag and multitask seamlessly with ease.

“Intel and Samsung have brought together the best of PC and smartphone experiences by combining our unique expertise and jointly investing thousands of engineering hours in these next-generation Galaxy Books.” said Gregory M. Bryant, Executive Vice President & General Manager of the Client Computing Group at Intel. “The new Galaxy Books are the thinnest 13-inch and 15-inch Intel Evo designs ever and deliver on the Evo promises of responsiveness, instant wake and long battery life. They also offer custom Bluetooth enablement and industry-leading connectivity including 5G and Wi-Fi 6E capabilities.”

The Galaxy Book Pro series is packed with performance-boosting features that make daily work more productive and enjoyable. The reengineered Pro Keyboard includes a scissor mechanism that increases your speed and comfort with wide keys and rubber domes to provide a satisfying 1mm of travel length in near silence. The keyboard is paired with a 23 percent larger touchpad11 for more room to scroll through websites or pinch to zoom into details. Quick Search software can search documents for keywords quickly so you spend less time digging through your folders.

With Studio Mode, you can enjoy video call environments that help you look as you prefer regardless of your setting. Intelligent Noise Cancelling, which eliminates ambient noise from your microphone, you’ll be seen and heard with clarity. With Screen Recorder and Samsung Studio Plus, you can also make the next viral gameplay tutorial by recording your screen in combination with your voice and polish your video with easy editing tools.

Galaxy Book Pro 360 comes with an upgraded S Pen12 right in the box—now 2.5x thicker13 for a more true-to-life writing experience. This user-favorite tool is great for taking notes during important meetings or classes—or unleashing your creativity when you’re off the clock. Sketch freely in the preloaded Clip Studio Paint,14 which offers professionally styled brush options that mimic real-world creations, or create time-lapse videos of your latest sketch and share with a community of creators with PENUP.

The Center of Your Mobile Ecosystem

Do more and save time as your Galaxy ecosystems work better together thanks to Samsung’s close collaboration with Microsoft.

“We’re excited to take the next step forward in our partnership with Samsung,” said Panos Panay, Chief Product Officer at Microsoft. “This exciting Windows PC portfolio builds on Samsung’s strength in highly mobile and connected devices and solutions. Together, we’re integrating Windows even deeper within the Galaxy ecosystem to create experiences that are simple, smooth, and stunning. I’m proud to be working together to help our customers stay connected, be more productive, more creative, and discover brand-new possibilities with Samsung and Microsoft.”

The Galaxy Book Pro series works effortlessly with your other Galaxy devices for increased productivity and efficiency. Second screen15 allows you to expand your display onto your Galaxy Tab for easier multitasking and enhanced productivity with Duplicate and Extend modes. With Link to Windows and Microsoft Your Phone16 integration, stay in your flow by taking calls, checking notifications, accessing photos, messages and running up to five apps simultaneously from your smartphone directly on your desktop – all at once.17 You can also organize all your photos from every device in one place. Take Super Slow-mo or Single Take content from your Galaxy smartphone and check them out on the bigger screen of your Galaxy Book Pro or Galaxy Book Pro 360. Content will appear on your Galaxy Book Pro series in the same format as your Galaxy smartphone including special effects.
