Ever wished your smartphone could automatically unlock itself when you carry it around? With the Smart Lock¹ feature, which was first made available with Android 5 in 2014, you can unlock your smartphone in situations and locations you feel secure in without entering a password or scanning your fingerprint.

The feature lets you keep your Galaxy smartphone unlocked when it’s connected to your Galaxy smartwatch or when you have your phone on you. To give you more ways to quickly access the apps you need, you can also choose to automatically unlock your smartphone in a safe location of your choice – like your home.

Buds Together

Music sounds better when you listen to it with friends. First introduced with Galaxy Buds Live, Buds Together² makes it easy for you to share your favorite songs with others while enjoying the best sound quality.

To enable the feature, all you need to do is tap on the Music Share icon in your phone’s Quick Panel and select the earbuds you want to share with. Once the invitation is accepted on your friend’s device, you can listen to the same tune together on two separate pairs of Galaxy earbuds.

Auto Switch

Many of us use just one pair of earbuds with multiple devices. When you switch device, it’s often a hassle to disconnect and reconnect the Bluetooth connection. Wouldn’t it be great if your earbuds can do the switch automatically when you need them to?

Introduced with Galaxy Buds Pro, the Auto Switch feature³ seamlessly takes care of your Galaxy Buds Pro’s connection when you switch between devices. Let’s say you get a call on your Galaxy smartphone while you’re watching a movie on your Galaxy tablet. Instead of having to manually disconnect your earbuds from the tablet and pair them with your phone, the feature will automatically switch the Bluetooth connection over to your phone when you pick up the call.

Hand Wash

Personal hygiene is more important now than ever, especially when it comes to hand washing. But maintaining a regular handwashing routine can be challenging as we go about our daily lives.

Shortly following the rapid changes around the world last year, Samsung introduced the Hand Wash app on Galaxy smartwatches. The app provides a practical yet simple way to help you keep up with your handwashing routine. You can get started by setting up alarms in the app and receive reminders to wash your hands at regular intervals. Now with the latest update⁴, once you start washing your hands, your Galaxy smartwatch will automatically start a 25-second countdown, which is the World Health Organization’s recommended handwashing time. On the app’s dashboard, you can also keep track of how many times you have washed your hands during the day as well as review your handwashing habits on a weekly basis.

Visual Display: From Display to Packaging to Remote Control, the 2021 Samsung TVs are Packed With Innovation

Q. Which products do you want consumers to pay particular attention to in 2021?

We at the Visual Display Business have announced ‘Screens Everywhere, Screens for All’ vision and unveiled our 2021 portfolio of Neo QLED, MICRO LED and Lifestyle TVs. Along this line, we would like to draw attention to the 2021 Neo QLEDs recently announced at CES 2021. Samsung’s Neo QLEDs incorporate Quantum Mini LED, which are 1/40 the height of conventional LED. Thanks to Samsung’s Quantum Matrix Technology, the scale of luminance has been increased to 12-bit with 4096 steps, enabling a more precise viewing experience. Neo QLEDs also feature a Neo Quantum Processor with enhanced AI upscaling technology that can optimize picture quality to 4K and 8K picture output regardless of the input quality.

Furthermore, thanks to its slim and delicate Infinity One Design, the Neo QLED can fit into any space by merit of its sleek design – providing viewers with an even more immersive viewing experience. Audio innovations such as SpaceFit Sound, which uses AI to analyze a TV’s physical environment, and Object Tracking Sound (OTS) Pro, which corresponds to the movement of objects onscreen, also further bolster the truly premium viewing experience offered by the Neo QLEDs.

The 2021 Neo QLEDs also include numerous functions specially customized for the recent change in living patterns, wherein one’s home has become the center of one’s life. Those who enjoy workout at home can take advantage of Samsung Health’s new Smart Trainer feature that tracks and analyzes workouts and provides feedback, and those who enjoy high-quality gaming can harness Super Ultrawide Gameview to play on a screen with a ratio of up to 32:9, along with the Game Bar for customized and convenient game settings.

We would also like to highlight the recently launched MICRO LED line. The new MICRO LED line produces stunning brightness and vibrant colors thanks to 24 million individually controlled LEDs. Its 4Vue (Quad View) feature is also worth noting – viewers can watch up to four different content sources from news or sports to Internet content simultaneously on one screen, and can even connect their game console for even more diversified entertainment.

Q. Part of Samsung’s 2021 vision for Visual Display products is a commitment to sustainability and accessibility. Could you tell us more about the innovations that correlate with this?

Firstly, in 2021, Samsung TVs will come with a solar-powered remote control that can be recharged by indoor light, outdoor light or USB — a first-of-its-kind innovation for the brand. This will help prevent the unnecessary waste of a projected 99 million AA batteries over seven years. Secondly, we are expanding the use of our ‘Eco-Packaging’ Design to our all 2021 Lifestyle TVs and most of the 2021 Neo QLED line. Thirdly, we are set to increase the use of recycled materials in our products so that resources can be upcycled and constantly circulated throughout the product cycle.

Samsung’s 2021 accessibility features – now available on all 2021 QLED and Neo QLED models – bring the latest advances in technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help more people comfortably enjoy their TV experiences. The 2021 line adds new features such as Caption Moving, Sign Language Zoom and Multi-Output Audio, giving those with the hard of hearing, the deaf, people with low vision and the blind the ability to optimize their viewing to their needs and preferences. We will continue to develop new AI based features to enhance the accessibility of Samsung TVs in the years to come.

Home Appliance Category: In the ‘New Normal’, the JetBot 90 AI+ Works Harder and Smarter for Your Home

Q. Which products do you want consumers to pay particular attention to in 2021?

As people spend more time at home, the home space itself is becoming increasingly important – and in turn, domestic hygiene has become a priority. Times like these require the most cutting-edge cleaning solutions, and we answered the call with the JetBot 90 AI+ – a robot vacuum that harnesses AI to intelligently clean every corner of a user’s home.

The first-ever robot vacuum to be powered by Intel^® AI, the JetBot 90 AI+ is capable of processing a lot of information fast. The vacuum comes with over 1 million images pre-learned so that it is able to autonomously avoid various obstacles like towels, socks and electric cables as soon as a user sets it to work. That means users don’t have to tidy their floors before running the JetBot 90 AI+!

Q. What are some features of JetBot 90 AI+ that make it stand out in comparison to other robot cleaners?

Previous robot cleaners recognized obstacles in 2D, whereas the JetBot 90 AI+ features 3D sensors. This extra dimension helps the robot cleaner accurately identify different obstructions and select the most efficient driving method. In addition to these 3D sensors, the JetBot 90 AI+ is fitted with LiDAR for precise location mapping.

Another special feature of the JetBot 90 AI+ is its Clean Station. The Clean Station not only empties the dustbin automatically, but also traps 99.999% of fine dust¹ and allergens for easy maintenance.

Q. Which function of the JetBot 90 AI+ do you recommend the most?

I strongly recommend the Live Cleaning Report function of the JetBot 90 AI+, which is particularly useful if you want to use the device while away from your home. Users can connect to their vacuum from anywhere via the SmartThings mobile app in order to see where the vacuum is cleaning in real time and monitor the spaces that haven’t been cleaned due to obstacles the robot vacuum has encountered. When you get back home, those obstacles have already been identified, so all you need do is remove them ahead of the JetBot 90 AI+’s next clean.

Mobile Category: Tune Into the Future With the All-New Form Factor of Galaxy Buds Live

Q. Which products do you want consumers to pay particular attention to in 2021?

I would like to recommend Galaxy Buds Live, Samsung’s innovative earbuds with a revolutionary form factor. From the earliest stages of planning, we factored user comfort and fit into our process, and the product we have now is the result of extensive trial and error. While minimizing the parts that protrude out of the ear during our design process, we struggled to find a design that simultaneously sat comfortably in the ear. After much modification, we were able to develop an ergonomic earbud design that is completely different from any of our previous earbud offerings. The exterior design exudes a luxurious aura thanks to its glossy and matte appearance, and even the earbud case has been designed with care to provide that perfect finishing touch.

The unique open-type of Galaxy Buds Live is another point worth noting. Through the combination of sound technology by AKG, Harman’s premium audio brand, and Samsung’s innovative hardware technologies, we have been able to provide a fully immersive audio experience. The speaker and the bass woofer have also been enhanced to provide richer surround sound to users.

Furthermore, Galaxy Buds Live’s Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is another brand-new function to the Buds portfolio. Not only does it help users focus more on their music, it also reduces background noise within the low-bandwidth range (less than 700Hz) up to 97% to avoid that ‘earplugged’ sensation when listening while in a car or on a bus. Galaxy Buds Live will still let conversation or audio announcements through to users so that the sound is kept balanced but the user is kept aware of their surroundings.

Finally, the call quality of Galaxy Buds Live is another area I’d like to draw attention to. Galaxy Buds Live include a total of three microphones, one on the inside and two on the outside, and an acceleration sensor to filter out external noises. We also improved the audio signal in order to highlight the user’s voice so that they can enjoy the clearest call experiences possible.

Q. We have heard that your team challenges itself with developing innovations that put the environment first. Do Galaxy Buds Live include any such sustainable innovations?

We are in the process of manufacturing recyclable plastic (Post-Consumer Material, or PCM). We have also designed our products in a way that allows users to replace separate components of their earbuds in order to extend the lifespan. These efforts have in fact led to us being awarded the Best of Innovation Award in the area of ‘Eco-Design, Sustainability’ at this year’s CES event.

Memory Category: Small Yet Powerful Secrets Inside our Mobile Devices

Q. Which products do you want consumers to pay particular attention to in 2021?

I would like to highlight the Samsung uMCP, which received a CES 2021 Innovation Award and is a high-end mobile memory solution that combines 10nm-class 12GB LPDDR5 (Low-Power DDR5) and sixth-generation 256GB UFS²3.1. The LPDDR5 is the fastest mobile memory solution currently available, supporting high-resolution displays such as 4K or 6K on mobile devices, as well as smooth multitasking. Furthermore, UFS3.1 technology enables much faster data processing and is more energy-efficient than before. Above all, the biggest advantage of this solution is its 11.5mmx13mm size, which combines both DRAM and NAND. Component size is very important in smartphone design, and the uMCP makes the best use of its size.

Q. Could you highlight any specific areas that users will be able to notice this improved product experience in?

When it comes to choosing a new mobile device, one of the most important criteria is a device’s multitasking performance. Our solution provides a more seamless experience with 4K or 8K multimedia, AR/VR experiences and more. The LPDDR5, adopted in mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs, currently supports 6400MB/s and is offered in up to 16GB-sized packages. It is around two times faster than its predecessor, LPDDR4. In the case of UFS3.1, the sequential write performance – used mainly when downloading videos – comes in at 400MB/s, which is also almost two times as fast as its predecessor, UFS2.2.

LED Category: Innovations Capable of Brightening a User’s Day

Q. Which products do you want consumers to pay particular attention to in 2021?

I’d recommend that users keep an eye on our new indoor lighting solution, a CES 2021 Innovation Award-winner, the LM283N+. It has been developed to help users stay more alert and to improve sleep quality by helping to adjust melatonin levels. The DAY iteration of this product is for daytime activities, and prevents users from falling asleep by controlling the creation of melatonin. On the other hand, the product NITE helps users enjoy deeper sleep through its control of melatonin release.

Whether you need to be concentrating or are just looking to relax, the LM283N+ can come in useful as it is customizable depending on the use circumstances – such a capability is why the LM283N+ received a CES 2021 Innovation Award in the category of Health & Wellness.

Q. What are some special features of the LM283N+?

The development of LM283N+ began from a question: ‘What kind of lighting can contribute to better daily life?’ I believe that the LM283N+ not only lights up a space, but also opens the door for the new ways that lighting can exert influence over our daily lives.

We introduced the LM302N in the market for the first time last year as a truly human-centered light. Based on the LM302N, the LM283N+ has been developed as a platform exclusively specialized for LED light bulbs, meaning that users can easily incorporate the model into their own daily patterns, as it can be applied to replaceable lighting fixtures such as desk lights.

Once again, some of the most popular content featured in the Newsroom this year discussed exciting additions to the Galaxy family. An article highlighting the history of the S Pen, along with enhancements that were made for the Galaxy Note20, showcased how Samsung made one of the Note series’ most powerful features even more so. An interview with the team that perfected the design of the Galaxy Buds Live demonstrated the lengths Samsung went to ensure that its newest earbuds would offer an exceptionally comfortable fit. We also published an in-depth series on the Galaxy Z Flip’s Hideaway Hinge and the groundbreaking technologies that make it work.

Samsung’s TVs and appliances were also prominently featured. Our ‘Big-Screen Chronicles’ series walked readers through the ins and outs of selecting the perfect TV, and outlined steps Samsung has taken to foster next-level viewing experiences. Today, this technology is known as noise cancelation technology, and is used around the world in headphones and earbuds to help people focus on the music, podcasts and other audio that they want to hear while blocking out the sounds that they don’t.

Putting Sound Waves to Work

Simply putting on any pair of earphones will block outside noise to some extent. But unless you completely seal off your ear, it is impossible to stop outside noise filtering in and interrupting your audio experience. In order to understand the process of capturing and filtering the noise that leaks in that is key to noise cancelation technologies, it is necessary to first look at how sound waves work and how they are transmitted into your ear.

Sound waves are produced by vibrations which then travel long-distance through a surrounding medium to reach your ear. The most common example of this is the air around us. The reason why we can effortlessly carry on a conversation in a café is the same reason we cannot hear sound in space – it is dependent on the presence of air as a medium.

Noise cancelation works by harnessing the unique characteristics of these sound waves and their medium. The first method for canceling noise is called Active Noise Canceling (ANC), which works by creating its own noise-like waves that work to offset the unwanted noises entering your ears from outside. The second method is called Passive Noise Canceling (PNC), which blocks outside noise from entering your ear by limiting the mediums through which the sound is delivered.

Active Noise Canceling: Using Sound Waves to Offset Sound Waves

It is said that the most effective tool to cut a diamond is with another diamond. Similarly, sound waves can be offset or even canceled by other sound waves. Just like the waves we see in the ocean, sound waves have peaks (the highest point) and troughs (the lowest point). When sound waves with the same distance from peak to trough come from different directions and collide with each other, the respective peaks and troughs clash, leaving the sound wave at a near zero value.

ANC uses this principle of destructive interference to cancel out unwanted sounds before they reach your ears. Sounds from outside are collected through an external microphone mounted inside the earphone. The earphone uses its internal circuits to analyze those sounds and then replicates them to produce sound waves that are similar to the unwanted external sound but that move in the opposite direction. Through this process, the earphone cancels out the unwanted sound waves before they can reach your ears.

Because ANC uses collected sound and responds based on analysis of this outside noise, noise cancelation takes place regularly and continuously. If the earphone picks up a sound that is similar to a noise it has analyzed previously, a reverse wavelength can be emitted at the exact right time in order to eliminate the unwanted noise. This is why this sound offsetting technology is highly effective in places where the background noise is consistent, for example on an airplane or a busy subway. On the other hand, ANC can be less effective in cases where the external noises are random and more difficult to predict, such as during a conversation between two people or when a sudden noise is emitted unexpectedly.

ANC is more effective at mitigating low pitch sounds than it is high pitch sounds. The system requires time to analyze external noises, and that potential time delay can affect how well it offsets external sound and how much external noise the user hears. In other words, unwanted external sounds might come in faster than the ANC can cancel them out. “In the case of bass sounds, which have a relatively long wavelength, the gap between the peak and trough of the waves is wide(more time gap), so a slight lag in the offset timing will not impact the quality of ANC,” noted Kim. “However, high-pitch sounds with short wavelengths have a shorter gap between the peak and trough points, meaning that even a small delay can make it hard for the ANC to match the waveforms up correctly, causing ANC performance degradation.”

Passive Noise Canceling: Stopping Sound in Its Tracks

When they hear a sound they don’t like, most people cover their ears – this is because this is by far the easiest way to block out noise. Since sound waves travel the air to reach your ear, the sound cannot properly enter the ear if there are obstacles, such as hands, in the way. This is also why communication underwater is so difficult, given the amount of water in the way between a noise’s source and a person’s ears.

This is essentially how PNC works. PNC-enabled earphones are designed to physically block noise out by closing the ear off from its surroundings or using a sponge that absorbs sound. Headphones with over-ear padding covering the entire ear and in-ear earphones that completely block the entrance to the ear are some of the best examples of PNC technology.

Unlike ANC, which requires microphones and analytical circuits to offset unwanted noise, PNC earphones are fairly easy to make, making them generally cheaper than ANC earphones. Furthermore, if PNC earphones have been made to fit the shape of your ear perfectly, they can block outside noise almost entirely, making them more practically effective than ANC earphones. However, as PNC headphones fit right into the ear canal, some users can find these kinds of earphones uncomfortable to use.

Putting Safety First in Noise Cancelation

In the end, it is not just the noise cancelation technique that matters when it comes to cutting out those unwanted sounds, but also the shape of the earphones themselves. Up until now, most noise-canceling earphones were produced as canal-type earphones since this shape fits right into your ear compared to open-type earphones, which leave more space around the ear and are subsequently less effective at noise cancelation. Open-type earphones have rarely been equipped with noise cancelation technology, but when Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Buds Live on August 5, the company expanded users’ options by applying ANC technology to an open-type wireless earphone.

While noise cancelation technology can help you fully immerse yourself in your music or better focus on an audiobook, it can also present dangers if you cannot hear exactly what is going on around you. “It is difficult to recognize a dangerous situation when wearing earphones with noise cancelation technology as they block out all surrounding sounds,” noted Professor Kim. The volume inside a pair of earphones can reach up to 70 to 80 dBspl¹ – the same as a car horn – but since the sound from a user’s earphones is much closer to a user and more immersive, it is easy for a user to become insensitive to external noises. On top of this, the activation of ANC technology further reduces external noise by around 30 dB while maintaining the sound in the earphones at 70 to 80 dBspl, making it more difficult for users to detect any auditory signs of danger.

When using their noise-canceling headphones, users need to keep their own safety top of mind and have a good understanding of the situations in which they are using their earphones. If you are looking to enjoy your favorite audio indoors, earphones that feature effective noise cancelation are a great choice. However, if you enjoy using your earphones while doing outdoor activities such as jogging, you should be sure to stay mindful of your surroundings at all times and choose earphones that offer a reasonable level of noise cancelation, allowing you to stay aware of the world around you.

¹ Decibel (dB) is originally a relative unit of measurement, representing the difference between the level of a base measurement and that of comparison. When used in the context of sound, 0 dB is defined as the lowest sound level a person can hear and is used as an absolute measure (dBspl = dB + sound pressure level (‘spl’)). Protracted observation and extensive user testing were required when it came to developing the next-generation Galaxy Buds Live, which take comfort to the next level. But what was the development journey like for the designers who were charged with creating this never-before-seen type of earbud?

Samsung Newsroom found out below.

Step 1: On a Quest to Find the New Samsung Form Factor

The Galaxy Buds Live are designed to meet the needs of users who want to enjoy a broad range of sounds. Whereas the previously released Galaxy Buds+ were ‘canal-type’ earbuds that catered to those seeking immersive listening experiences, the Galaxy Buds Live are open-type earbuds that can be worn comfortably for long periods of time, making them convenient for users who listen to music, watch videos, or make phone calls for extended periods. Designer Tommy Choi explained that, “Unlike canal-type earbuds, which can become uncomfortable for some when used for longer hours, open-type earbuds sit outside the user’s earflap, facilitating air circulation and providing more comfortable usability. We came up with the current design to satisfy a broad range of users and distinguish our earbuds from other products with their unique form factor,” he added.

Step 2: Tireless Tweaking for Broad-reaching Comfort

No matter how good their performance might be, users are likely to avoid using earphones that are uncomfortable. As the Galaxy Buds Live were developed to accompany users throughout their days, a lot of effort was put into ensuring they were as comfortable as possible. “During development, 80 earbud RPs (Rapid Prototypes) were developed to check the product’s optimal size, shape and specifications. We prepared a lot of RPs since even the tiniest difference in form could lead to huge changes in comfortability levels,” said designer Youngsang Jang.

The human ear comes in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, thus finding a fit that satisfies all presents a significant challenge. And this was especially true in the case of the Galaxy Buds Live, which underwent meticulous user testing to ensure they provided a comfortable fit to a broad range of users, regardless of the shape and size of their ears. Designer Joonha Kim elaborated on the testing process, saying that, “At first, subjects used the earbuds for a short period of time and received their feedback on various points. We knew we couldn’t satisfy all the subjects, but we developed the design so as to satisfy as many people as possible. Then, we performed tests in which the subjects used the earbuds for longer period, and tested in a situation with big movements to refine the shape and create a comfortable earbud.”

“Setting the standard for comfortability was the most difficult part,” added Choi, who also worked on the testing. “When eight out of 10 subjects responded by saying that the earbuds were comfortable, and only two rated them as uncomfortable, we had to ensure we made modifications that satisfied those two subjects without compromising the satisfaction of the other eight. In order to make a comfortable product for as many users as possible, we tested on around 2000 subjects.”

Step 3: Sophisticated, Square-shaped Case for ‘Jewel-like’ Earbuds

The shape of the Galaxy Buds Live case was chosen after 30 RPs were developed, including ones with a similar shape to Samsung’s early earbud cases

Galaxy Buds Live, the first open-type wireless Galaxy earbuds, also come with a revolutionized case design. Whereas up until the Galaxy Buds+ the earbud cases were oval shaped, with the Galaxy Buds Live the case is square with rounded edges. Youngsang Jang explained the reason for the change of shape, saying that, “Based on the idea that it would be nice to make the shiny earbuds look almost like jewelry, we designed the case as a square to make it look somewhat like a jewelry box. The size and shape were determined to allow the case to fit easily into pockets or be held in the hand, while leaving enough room for the powerful battery that provides up to 21 hours of listening time when fully charged.”

The gap that runs between the upper and lower halves on all sides of the case is also a new feature that makes it easier to open. “The gap adds convenience when opening the case, and also makes it easier to apply external covers to your earbud case.” explained designer Sangok Sohn. “When applying external covers to previous incarnations of Samsung’s earbuds, double-sided tape had to be used to fix the cover to the case, which would often leave stains on the case itself. However, the addition of the gap that runs around the case allows covers to be attached more easily and removes the need for the tape.”

“When designing the product, we thought hard about all the stages of interaction for users – from the moment they get their first look at the product, to when they open the case and use the earbuds, to when they put them back in the case to charge,” related Choi. “We also considered how the earbuds would look while resting in the case, and how much they should protrude – and at what angle – to allow users to take them out easily.”

Step 4: Beautiful Colors ­- Eco-Friendly Materials

The Galaxy Buds Live come in a range of colors¹ – including Mystic Bronze, Mystic White, and Mystic Black – which are tailored to match the five new products that were introduced at Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2020. “The colors were selected to imply that the Galaxy Buds Live belong to the same family as the other recently released Galaxy products,” explained designer Mingyeong Jang, who was in charge of CMF (Color, Material, Finish) design for the Galaxy Buds Live. “Even though the newly released smartphones and the Galaxy Buds Live are not made of the same materials, we tailored the design to ensure that they express similar colors and textures.

A range of mockups with different levels of glossiness were developed and compared

Extensive testing to optimize usability and make sure the earbuds and case complimented one another was essential during the CMF design process. “When I first saw the glossy RPs, they seemed very luxurious to me, and the case that looked like a jewelry box only added to this feeling,” said Mingyeong Jang. “Thus, we designed the Galaxy Buds Live to be glossier after studying a broad range of user preferences.”

The Galaxy Buds Live are also innovative in terms of the materials they are comprised of. According to Jang, “In an effort to reduce the environmental impact caused by plastic waste, the Galaxy Buds Live are made using 20 percent recycled post-consumer materials (PCM). I hope that we see similar eco-friendly changes made in other areas too,” she concluded.

Through the course of designing a totally new kind of wireless earbud, the designers of the Galaxy Buds Live went deep into studying the human ear. Designer Yongseok Bang shared what he aspires to going forward, saying that, “The form factor of the Galaxy Buds Live is unique, and allows users to enjoy the benefits of both canal and open-type earphones. I will be sure to keep learning about the human ear and improving my knowledge and skills to create a design that can satisfy a broad range of people.”

The exciting event, which was livestreamed from Korea, kicked off with the unveiling of the Galaxy Note20 and Note20 Ultra – productivity powerhouses that combine top-of-the-line specs with an even more versatile S Pen.
