Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy brand sound, “Over the Horizon,” returns in 2026 with the theme “A Soundtrack of the Earth,” capturing the planet’s beauty through orchestral melodies.

Each year, Samsung reimagines “Over the Horizon” with a new theme to express its brand philosophy through music. Following a traditional Korean orchestra in 2024 and a big band jazz interpretation in 2025, the 2026 edition conveys a message of sustainability through the rich harmonies of a full orchestra. Released ahead of the unveiling of the new Galaxy S series on February 25 (PST), the piece illustrates both the grandeur and delicacy of nature — portraying a harmonious coexistence between technology and the planet.

Los Angeles-based composer and pianist Eunike Tanzil is credited with the music and arrangement for the 2026 edition of “Over the Horizon.” Known for her lyrical melodies and expressive harmonies, she first drew Samsung’s attention in February 2024 with her reinterpretation of the theme on social media.

In her arrangement, Tanzil translates inspiration from nature into music. The majestic opening — led by brass and horns — evokes towering mountains, while smooth legato strings in the middle section recall the calm sea. She also incorporates the angklung, a traditional Indonesian instrument, into the Western orchestral setting to create a distinctive harmony. Reflecting on this creative decision, she said, “Blending instruments with different identities was an enjoyable challenge and became a meaningful chapter in my musical journey.”

“Over the Horizon 2026” was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performed the piece, adding depth and resonance to the melody. Producer and engineer Jonathan Allen used Dolby Atmos technology to create an immersive listening experience, while careful microphone placement enhanced the natural sense of space.

Watch the “Over the Horizon 2026” videos below to see its message of sustainability brought to life.

Turning a photo from day to night in seconds. Restoring missing parts of objects in images, like a bite taken out of a cake. Seamlessly merging multiple photos into one cohesive image. These creative capabilities once required professional skills or hours of editing. Now they’re possible in minutes, directly from your Galaxy phone, simply by asking in your own words.

That’s the next evolution of the Galaxy camera: an end-to-end experience with the brightest Galaxy camera system ever as the foundation.

Mobile cameras are moving beyond capture, as the latest Galaxy AI unifies advanced creative capabilities for capturing, editing and sharing in one intuitive platform. The result is a seamless experience and a more fluid creative process — eliminating the need to switch between apps or navigate complex tools, so creativity feels faster, simpler and more natural.

At the core of this evolution is the belief that creativity should not be limited by technical skill or experience. From shooting to editing, the Galaxy camera has quietly redefined what’s possible. Now anyone can create cinematic videos, track stars across the night sky or capture richly detailed photos, even in low light. And with natural, multimodal input, editing becomes as simple as describing what you have in mind in just a few words.

Samsung is dedicated to providing its users with products and services designed to make their every day more epic. A crucial part of this commitment is providing people with innovations that protect the planet and conserve our natural resources.

We act on three packaging design principles – reduce, replace, and recycle; these principles have guided the eco-conscious changes to packaging for the Galaxy S series. From the quantity of packaging to the materials used, Samsung has worked to streamline product packaging and implement more sustainable processes.1

From Galaxy S7 To Galaxy S21: Our Journey to More Eco-Conscious Packaging

Since the release of the Galaxy S7 in 2016, Samsung has developed more eco-conscious packaging with each generation of the Galaxy S series. Throughout this journey, we had worked diligently to remove elements that could stand in the way of people easily recycling their product packaging after purchase.

Only 4 percent of the total weight of the Galaxy S21’s packaging is made up of plastic,2 with the volume of the waste generated per packaging unit being reduced by 49 percent when compared to the packaging of the Galaxy S7.* Similarly, the Galaxy S21 packaging contains only 58 percent of the paper used in that of the Galaxy S7, helping save some 44,802 trees a year.3 As a result of these continued sustainability efforts, we decreased the amount of carbon generated during the development of the Galaxy S21 series’ packaging by 50 percent compared to that of the Galaxy S7.4

Following extensive research into eco-conscious materials, the Galaxy S8’s packaging saw several evolutions compared to the previous Galaxy S series. We removed the magnet from inside the packaging along with the plastic in-box case for earphones, and the accessory tray – traditionally comprised of plastic – was made with paper-based material.

For the release of the Galaxy S9, we made an extra push towards reducing plastic waste. Samsung changed the device tray material from plastic to a pulp-mold material, integrating upcycled materials into our process.

For the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S20, Samsung expanded eco-conscious changes to packaging. We replaced plastic with paper to tie together accessories, the package structure was simplified, and all the packaging trays for in-box accessories were integrated into one pulp-mold tray to cut down on unnecessary materials. Furthermore, the protective film was removed from accessories such as the charger plug and the USB connector, and the coating for all accessories was changed from a glossy finish to a more eco-conscious matte finish that hides fingerprints and is harder to scratch.

The packaging for our latest flagship device, the Galaxy S21 series, is the most eco-conscious product packaging within the Galaxy S series. Every box for the device is made with corrugated cardboard, instead of rigid paper, to improve recyclability. Accessories such as the charger plug and in-box earphones were removed to further minimize the amount of packaging and promote reuse and recycling habits among Galaxy users.

Promoting Resource Efficiency Into the Future

Despite emerging challenges around the availability of sustainable materials and productivity of global supply chains as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Samsung still has a responsibility to help combat climate change and protect the environment in everything we do.

At the end of 2020, we achieved our goal of using 100 percent recycled or sustainably-sourced paper packaging5 and now require paper suppliers to submit certifications and conform to international standards, such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. We recognize that our journey to shifting to a fully circular economy is not over.

Samsung continues to search for new and innovative eco-conscious materials for our product packaging, to discover new ways to minimize materials used and to optimize our product development processes. In advance of future product releases, Samsung will continue to make changes that provide people with more eco-conscious product and packaging experiences as we work together with our supply chain and our customers to create a more sustainable world.

1 Some of the listed components or materials may differ by country or region.

Driven by the simple but profound goal of creating meaningful innovation, Samsung has pushed the limits of mobile technology and set the standard for what the smartphone can – and should – be. By advancing mobile technology, building groundbreaking form factors, and delivering creative solutions, the Galaxy series has helped millions accomplish more on the go.

As the flagship series celebrates its 10th anniversary, we want to reflect on just how far we’ve come in our journey of mobile innovation. It’s the perfect opportunity to look ahead at what’s in store for the decade ahead and share how Samsung will continue to test boundaries.

Laying the Foundation

Samsung has never been one to shy away from big ideas. Long before the first smartphone, engineers in Suwon, South Korea were re-imagining every element of the mobile phone, setting in motion the trends that have shaped the mobile technology today.

Right from the beginning, Samsung saw the potential of turning the mobile phone into a multi-functional device. The release of the TV phone in 1999 brought entertainment to the palm of our hands, while the built-in 10-megapixel camera on the Samsung B600 brought high-quality photography and the mobile phone together.

Meanwhile, the desire to expand mobile capabilities led to creative solutions. Years before “smartwatch” would become a household term, innovators at Samsung developed the watch phone in 1999 to enhance productivity on-the-go.

Improving user experience was also a core aspect of Samsung’s innovation DNA in the early years. In 2002, Samsung launched the True Color Phone, introducing the world to the active matrix LCD display, and paving the way for the innovations in mobile display technology that are synonymous with the Galaxy series.

The Arrival of Samsung Galaxy

The lessons learned from the early years positioned Samsung to lead the industry at the start of the smartphone era. Guided by the value of open collaboration, Samsung joined forces with Android to push the frontier of mobile technology – a move which led to the birth of the Galaxy series.

In March 2010, Samsung launched the first Galaxy S series device. Packed with best-in-class technology – including a powerful GPU, a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, and a 5-megapixel camera – the Galaxy S created the blueprint for a mobile experience that enriches and simplifies everyday life. Building on the achievements of Galaxy S, Galaxy SII and Galaxy SIII delivered even more relevant benefits to users, cementing Samsung’s status as a pioneer in the smartphone industry.

Over the years, the Galaxy series continued to break new ground, improving and expanding the smartphone experience with each new device. The Edge Display curved the smartphone screen for the very first time, creating an immersive screen. The Infinity Display pushed bezels to the very edge of the phone, expanding the screen size without needing a larger phone to create the ultimate, uninterrupted viewing experience.

In 2011, the Galaxy Note established an entirely new mobile category — the large screen smartphone and debuted the S Pen. With increased screen real estate, users could watch, multitask and create more. The Note debuted the iconic S Pen, delivering new ways to interact with the smartphone.

Alongside the development of hardware, the Galaxy ecosystem has grown every step of the way to make connected living a reality. A suite of functionalities emerged that came to define the Galaxy—the flagship features that users looked for in every new device: Samsung Knox, Samsung Pay, and countless other services and capabilities that made a Galaxy.

Shaping the Next Ten Years

Samsung has established a rich legacy of innovation and has shaped the smartphone experience for hundreds of millions of consumers around the world. But we’re not resting on our laurels. We’ve set our sights on Galaxy’s future and are focusing on engineering the technologies and breakthroughs that will continue to transform the mobile landscape.

At the 2018 Samsung Developer Conference, Samsung unveiled the Infinity Flex Display, marking the beginning of the era of foldable smartphones. It also introduced its new interface that simplifies and streamlines the user experience and gives consumers a more natural way to use their phones.

Samsung isn’t just changing how smartphones will look. It’s also changing how they’ll connect. We’re working hard to usher in the next generation of connectivity with 5G. Samsung has more 5G patents than any other company and was the first company to receive FCC approval for its 5G network equipment. Our technology brought 5G networking to South Korea, and in partnership with U.S. carriers, we’ve already brought the first wave of 5G to the United States. We’re committed to putting 5G in consumers’ hands with a 5G smartphone in the first half of 2019.

Samsung introduced Galaxy to the world. This landmark innovation opened up a world of possibilities for consumers everywhere and signaled the start of industry-firsts and trailblazing technologies that continue to empower consumers to do what they thought could not be done. The next chapter of the smartphone story will soon begin, and one thing can be said for sure: Samsung will continue to develop meaningful breakthroughs designed to help you do more of what you love.

Samsung Electronics has received one of the most prestigious awards for environmental sustainability in recognition of its reduction of the carbon footprint of its flagship Galaxy S smartphones.

On October 8, Samsung won the Best in Product Carbon Footprint Prize at the Carbon Trust Standard and Label Bearers Conference and Awards 2015, held by Carbon Trust of the United Kingdom.

Carbon Trust’s performance awards have been presented annually for four years, recognizing companies and products that have shown outstanding results in carbon reduction. The win by Samsung is a first for the consumer electronics industry, the result of a reduction in carbon emissions of the Galaxy S smartphones.

Samsung began working with the Carbon Trust in 2012, pledging to certify the carbon footprint of all models within its flagship Galaxy smartphone range. The Galaxy S2 was the first to be certified in 2012, and all Galaxy S and Galaxy Note smartphones up to, including the Galaxy S5, have also been certified. The carbon emission level of the Galaxy S5 has been reduced by 37 percent compared to the Galaxy S2.

Throughout each product’s life cycle, from product development to disposal, Samsung Electronics analyzes carbon emissions at each stage and makes efforts to reduce the environmental footprints of its products.

Wouter van Tol, European Head of Corporate Citizenship and Sustainability at Samsung Electronics said, “As the world’s leading manufacturer of smartphones, we have a responsibility to minimize our environmental footprint. Being recognized for substantially reducing greenhouse emissions across our flagship range of Galaxy smartphones is a great honor. This is thanks to our PlanetFirst approach, where we consider the environmental impact of everything we manufacture, right from the start. We are committed to an on-going program of lowering our impact on the environment, and look forward to making even further progress in this area in the future.”

As mobile phones have evolved, continuous technological breakthroughs have allowed us to communicate more easily and effectively. In the beginning, we embraced the new ability to make and receive phone calls wherever and whenever we wanted. Next, we enjoyed the incredible convenience of text messaging – seamlessly connecting us to our friends and families in real-time, without speaking a single word. This was quickly followed by the rise of emojis, which let us express ourselves in a more fun, personal and creative way.

Flash forward to today and video is playing a bigger role than ever before in the way people communicate via their smartphones. It is the perfect tool for conveying our feeling and emotion – and ensures we are keeping our networks immersed in everything we do.

User-generated video content is rapidly becoming a major part of our online lives and beginning to dominate what we see on social media sites. In January 2015, Facebook announced that users are uploading 75% more videos than a year ago, while the number of videos in users’ newsfeeds is up 360%. Vine, the six-second-video sharing service, has seen explosive growth since it launched in 2013. In addition, YouTube now has a billion users uploading 300 hours of video every minute.

It’s abundantly clear that video is playing a larger role in the world’s social media platforms than ever before, and is quickly becoming a significant part of people’s daily lives. But for many of us, it is not simply a means for sharing moments with friends and family – it’s an art form.

Many apps allow us to add filters and edit clips to suit our taste and style. One of the most popular channels on YouTube features live feeds of gaming, while personal mobile broadcasting is also becoming increasingly prominent. Ultimately, video and personal broadcasting give citizen journalism another important tool, celebrities and public figures another way to interact with followers and companies another way to market their brand – the applications are almost endless.

Mobile devices have powered the rapid rise of video thanks to rapidly improving technology for high definition video recording and playback capabilities, improved displays and mobile networks that allow users to create, upload and watch content more quickly and conveniently than ever before. Years ago, videos shot on smartphones were not only of low quality, heavily pixilated and offered poor audio, they would also take a long time to upload and load for viewing.

However, recent technological advancements have moved video to the forefront of the social media landscape.

The video capabilities of Samsung smartphones have also improved significantly, specifically thanks to sweeping improvements in camera sensor technology over the past few decades. Whether someone is taking a still image or shooting video, the bigger image sensors of today guarantee better quality. However, sensor technology doesn’t solve the primary difference between taking a still image and shooting a video – the amount of data required. Recording and editing a video entails managing a huge amount of visual and audio information on your device.

This is where Samsung’s ongoing commitment to quality of service truly makes a difference. At Samsung, we have tried to provide the best video experience for users ever since we released our first camera phone in 2002. Today, our devices enable consumers to record high-quality videos that are longer than just a few minutes with the most reliable and intuitive recording features.

A number of significant milestones mark the evolution of video features over the last five years. The Galaxy S was the world’s first smartphone capable of recording HD video. Then, we enhanced video capture to Full HD resolution with the Galaxy S2. In 2013, the Galaxy Note 3 was among the first to enable 4K UHD video recordings.

Samsung has focused not only on higher resolutions but also on recording quality. With the Galaxy S6, users have a video camera that is equipped with Auto Real-time HDR to reproduce the varied brightness levels when filming in different spaces. It offers a low-light video function and Optical Image Stabilizer, helping to smooth out shaky videos due to shaky hands. And, even the rear camera can record UHD 4K video – an impressive feature given that many movie theaters screen films in 4K resolution. In addition, exciting features like fast motion and slow motion modes allow users to speed up or slow down portions of their videos with ease.

Quite simply, users can create better quality videos than ever before, and they are keen to take advantage of the technology they have in their hands.

Samsung is always mindful of people’s needs and trends in social media, remaining constantly in tune with the ways people use their devices. This is why we continue our relentless push to design even better devices offering increasingly advanced mobile video experiences. Consumers can continue to expect innovative, groundbreaking developments in video technology – and in audio recording – in future devices.

More than ever, mobile users today want to create, edit and share their experiences and emotions immediately with their own videos. They want enhanced video shooting and editing features that are not only technically advanced, but also fun and exciting.

As it stands today, recording and sharing a video are two separate actions. In the near future, this may become a more streamlined process, as mobile users have signaled the importance of immediacy and high-quality video. Of course, people look to their smartphones to satisfy this need, and Samsung is prepared to deliver. Whether you’re a citizen journalist capturing an unfolding news event live from the scene, or simply giving friends and family a tour of your brand new home, the next Galaxy device will present fresh and versatile options for real-time video shooting, editing and sharing.

When Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge to the world on March 1 it was a pivotal moment for Samsung’s series of smartphones under the Galaxy S label. With the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge, the company has taken smartphone design to new heights, continuing the Galaxy S tradition of delivering ingenious, mold-breaking design that is innovative, eye-catching and simply beautiful.

The development of these new smartphones had an internal codename: “Project Zero” – and for a good reason. “We named the Project ‘Zero’, because we returned to the very beginning of the Galaxy S – to start from scratch. Our main focus was on creating a whole new growth momentum, instead of resting on our laurels from past achievements,” said JK Shin, CEO and Head of IT & Mobile Communications at Samsung Electronics, ahead of the launch of the S6.

Galaxy S devices have been at the heart of Samsung’s smartphone success. The company became the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer on the strength of Galaxy S devices and the Galaxy S has constantly evolved, ever since the launch of the very first Samsung Galaxy S device in 2010. Now, five years later, the original Galaxy S has received a worthy successor in the Galaxy S6.

It’s been an extraordinary journey, so it’s worth exploring each milestone release in the Samsung Galaxy S range.

Galaxy S : The Trailblazer

On June 4, 2010, the Galaxy S was released to the world. It didn’t take long. Soon after its launch, Galaxy S achieved global mass appeal and become a true hit in the smartphone market.

The Galaxy S found its fame thanks to the performance of its hardware, which won over critics. Its list of features included Samsung’s original Exynos 3110 processor and an outstanding Super AMOLED display, which helped the phone to outperform most of its competitors using the Android operating system.

Just 70 days after its release in the domestic market, the Galaxy S reached the one-million mark in units sold. As of 2013, more than 25 million units had been sold globally. It was this achievement that laid the foundation for the amazing success story of the next Galaxy S.

Galaxy S Ⅱ : The Beloved Second Coming

Following the success of the original Galaxy S, there was much anticipation when the release of the second flagship from the Samsung stable was due. Amazingly, the SⅡ surpassed all expectations. When it was released in April of 2011, consumers embraced the craftsmanship that had gone into the Galaxy SⅡ, calling it “a masterpiece.” With a dual-core Exynos 4 processor, the SⅡ delivered great performance. Equipped with much faster reaction times, an optimized operating system, a larger display and many other features that improved on the Galaxy S, the SⅡ excelled in a highly competitive marketplace, just as its predecessor did. During its first month, the SⅡ reached a million units sold in Korea. Samsung sold an astounding 40 million units worldwide during the first 20 months.

Although four years have passed since its launch, many Galaxy lovers still say that the Galaxy SⅡ was their favorite. In Korea, a survey of mobile phone users saw the SⅡ gain praise as the most beloved Galaxy model.

The Galaxy SⅡ ensured that the entire range of Galaxy devices gained truly global name recognition. More importantly, though, it delivered success beyond the company’s wildest expectation, making Samsung the world’s leading manufacturer of smartphones in 2011.

Galaxy SⅢ : Global Smartphone Market Dominator

However, after the Galaxy SⅢ was launched, Samsung’s sales volumes truly skyrocketed. The smartphone came on the market in May 2012, and in just seven months, more than 40 million units were sold. It set yet another record for Samsung smartphone sales – both in Korea and worldwide. An average of nearly 190,000 Galaxy SⅢ units were sold every day during that period. Thanks to huge interest from the public and the media, the Galaxy SⅢ pushed the combined sales volume of all Galaxy S models beyond the 100-million-unit mark. Since the debut of the first Galaxy S in May 2010, it took just two years and seven months to reach this landmark. Ever since, Samsung Electronics has been the defending champion when it comes to the number of smartphones shipped worldwide.

The Galaxy SⅢ was the first smartphone that gave Galaxy S devices a reputation for sleek design. The streamlined appearance of the SⅢ’s body was inspired by pebbles on the beach, and put its main emphasis on an improved user experience, rather than focusing on boosting the hardware performance alone.

Another significant change was the SⅢ’s camera, which quickly became one of the main selling points. It was actually the result of listening to the needs of consumers, who wanted to take great photos quickly and easily with their phone cameras. The Galaxy SⅢ’s camera sensors were a marked improvement over its predecessor’s and had the ability to enhance image quality enough to compete with compact cameras.

Galaxy S4 : 10 Million Sold in 30 Days and the Bestselling Galaxy S So Far

With the Galaxy S4, Samsung continued its run of bestselling smartphones. While the overall appearance did not change dramatically, the performance of the hardware improved significantly. Despite having a 5-inch (130 mm) Full HD Super AMOLED screen and a larger battery, Samsung managed to make the Galaxy S4 even thinner and lighter (7.9mm, 190g). Little wonder that the Galaxy S4 sold 10 million units in just one month, once again breaking Samsung’s own record. Thanks to the amazing sales of the S4, Samsung was able to corner as much as 32.3% of the global smartphone market share, making the company the global market leader. Compare that with 2009, when Samsung had a global smartphone market share of just 3.7%. It took just four years since the launch of the original Galaxy S in 2010 to boost this number eightfold!

The Galaxy S4 truly delivered on its marketing slogan: “Life Companion.” Users could share music and games through Group Play, while the S Health application managed their wellbeing. It also came with the S Translator, which supports translation between 10 languages. The S4 stood out with its unique features to enhance the lives of users. In this respect, it really differentiated itself from the evolution of its predecessors, which had focused mainly on improving hardware features and – with the SⅢ – the overall user experience.

Galaxy S5 : The Evolution

Thanks to the success of its predecessors, the release of the Galaxy S5 attracted global attention. For the first time, a Galaxy S device was launched simultaneously in 150 countries. The smartphone offered a whole raft of improvements: improved camera, battery saver, fingerprint scanner, water/dust resistance and a heart rate monitor compatible with wearable devices.

Project Zero : The All New Galaxy S6

With the S6, Samsung wanted to take a look back and check if the Galaxy was offering exactly what users wanted, how they wanted it. So Samsung, after the years of journey with Galaxy S devices, took a step back to really listen to consumers and media. The code name for the new Galaxy S6 was ‘Project Zero’ and the slogan of Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2015, the annual showcase event for the device, was ‘All New Galaxy.’ This approach showed Samsung’s determination to lead the global smartphone market once again, with smartphones that are innovative and based on a totally new design ethos.

The Galaxy S6 was finally unveiled in March, and instantly received very positive reviews from the media and the public. Samsung had done it yet again, delivering a device that goes beyond expectations. Consumers worldwide just can’t wait to see the S6 with its fresh new design and overwhelming performance. The enthusiasm for the Galaxy S6 is a hard-earned reward for Samsung’s engineers; they accepted the challenge of starting from scratch, and building a smartphone that is the very essence of what made the first Galaxy device a success.

The design is the most obvious reflection of their efforts. The Galaxy S6 blends seamlessly two very different materials – metal and glass. The toughness of the metal and smoothness of the glass are in perfect harmony, creating an object of outstanding beauty. As for the Galaxy S6 edge, it has the revolutionary Dual Curved Display, which maximizes convenience with a very unique design.

One of the biggest innovations featured in the Galaxy S6 is a completely new approach to wireless battery charging. Unlike previous devices offering wireless charging, the S6 doesn’t require a special rechargeable case; all you need to do is simply put your Galaxy S6 on the wireless charging pad. And if users have a need for speed, then traditional AC recharging has become much faster too: the S6 gets enough power for nearly four hours of use with just 10 minutes of charging.

Another key feature on the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge is the camera. With a 16MP rear camera with OIS, Auto HDR and an f/1.9 lens, the Galaxy S6 offers one of the best imaging experiences you can find on a mobile device. The front camera with a whopping 5MP camera that supports HDR and has a f/1.9 lens is also expected to be a game changer, especially with selfies being so popular.

We hope you enjoyed this journey through the history of the Galaxy S. Please stay with us, as the S6 continues to chronicle the steps Samsung is taking to go from zero to infinity.
