Honoring its commitment to making technology more accessible for people with disabilities, Samsung Electronics Iberia, S.A.U. has announced that its Samsung Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note10 devices have received an accessibility certification from Spain-based NGO Fundación ONCE (the ONCE Foundation). The Amovil seal is part of a project developed by the ONCE Foundation in collaboration with universal accessibility consultancy ILUNION Tecnología y Accesibilidad, whose objective is to provide information about the accessibility features of commercial smartphones.

A Leader in Accessibility

Samsung is the first manufacturer to receive the ONCE Foundation’s seal of accessibility, which affirms that Samsung devices meet universal accessibility standards. This achievement is the result of close collaboration between Samsung and the ONCE Foundation, with the organizations aiming to use technology as a tool to support the autonomy of people living with disabilities and improve their quality of life.

The Galaxy S20 family, consisting of the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra, has been certified by the ONCE Foundation as providing accessibility features for people with zero and partial vision, zero and partial hearing, moderate and severe manipulation difficulties, difficulty seeing colors and speech difficulties. In addition, all of the Galaxy S20 models include a comprehensive accessibility menu to help users find the features they’re looking for quickly and easily. Users are also afforded the option to activate accessibility functions – such as the screen reader – when they first turn their devices on. The entire Galaxy S20 range also includes 5G connectivity, which allows users to download content faster, without delays or interruptions, even while conducting video calls or viewing live content.

In addition, the Samsung Galaxy Note10 incorporates accessibility features for people with zero and partial vision, zero and partial hearing, moderate or severe manipulation difficulties, color blindness, and speech difficulties. It also includes an S Pen that allows users to take notes and create precise sketches, facilitating the completion of a wide range of tasks.

A night sky scattered with sparkling, gem-like stars provided the canvas for this stunning photo of the Milky Way, which is from the official Samsung UK site. Incredibly, this photo took neither specialized equipment nor a professional photographer to shoot, but only required the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra and two office workers—Hyuck-ki Lee and Seok-joon Hong from Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business. Below, we explore their journey into the realm of astrophotography, and find out how the pair managed to capture the grandeur of the Milky Way with the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

A Young Man’s Journey to Becoming a Self-Made Astrophotographer

When Hong first started pursuing photography as a hobby, he used a film camera that he had received from his father. As he visited more and more shooting destinations, he found himself becoming increasingly immersed in the world of photography. In 2013, he and Lee traveled to Tanzania, where Hong got his first taste of astrophotography.

“I’ve always been interested in astronomy, and I even built my own telescope in high school,” Lee related. “I love how, with astrophotography, one day you can be shooting the moon from your living room, and the next you may be capturing a celestial phenomena that has never been caught on camera before. However, the idea that you could capture the night sky in all its glory with only a smartphone was a new concept to me.”

Glimpsing the stars shining bright on a pitch-black night is impressive enough, but actually trying to capture the sight with your camera can prove tricky. First, finding a spot to shoot that is unaffected by the light pollution caused by cities and large towns can prove difficult. Second, if you don’t remain alert and attentive, you risk missing the fleeting moment to get just the shot you’ve been waiting for. Third, you have no choice but to lug your heavy camera gear to whichever far-flung shooting destination you may have chosen.

But Hong and Lee report that the Galaxy S20 Ultra is going a long way towards alleviating those challenges. “Utilizing the camera on the Galaxy S20 Ultra has saved me from a lot of the difficulties that I thought were unavoidable,” said Hong. “A Galaxy S20 Ultra and a sturdy tripod are all a beginner astrophotographer really needs.”

How to Take Stellar Pictures on a Smartphone

The images of the night sky that the pair captured from the valleys and foothills between Jeollabuk-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do were so dazzling that it was hard to believe they were taken with a smartphone camera. “Even when a photograph is taken of the same thing, from the same place, at the same time, different photographers can produce varying products based on their differing perspectives and intentions,” Lee reported. “In many cases, differences in composition and angle combine to create a completely different piece of work.”

While taking photographs, it is also important to be familiar with your equipment and make the most of the features it offers. “The Galaxy S20 is definitely superior in terms of portability,” said Hong. “It also has the advantage of offering Pro Mode, which allows you to take photos manually and gives you more control over your settings, and ultimately the final results. I will definitely keep taking the S20 out into the field because of how it complements my DSLR camera.”

The Galaxy S20 Ultra offers improved low light photography and stability, producing extraordinary nighttime shots with minimal blur and noise. “Capturing good images of the night sky requires long exposure times­, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra is very well-suited to this kind of photography,” emphasized Lee. “Equipped with a 108-megapixel sensor and nona-binning technology for better low light performance, the camera on the Galaxy S20 Ultra is capable of capturing beautiful night-time photos.”

Hong and Lee also offered tips for those looking to try their hand at astrophotography. Lee recommended that burgeoning photographers start off simple, saying, “Static shots of constellations and the moon are easy to shoot, so are a good place to start. Make sure that you focus on the beauty of what you are trying to capture instead of the resulting pictures, and you will be rewarded with splendid pieces of work.”

“These days, chances for socialization are few and far between,” Hong commented. “So, for those looking to pass the time by getting into photography, I strongly recommend taking trips to remote areas with the Galaxy S20 Ultra. You don’t need a high-end DSLR camera to take great-quality pictures of constellations these days. You can also use astronomy apps to help you find constellations to take pictures of as well. From there, simply take out your Galaxy S20 Ultra and start creating special memories with your loved ones.”

Protecting What is Valuable to Users

Users expect their information to be protected. It is therefore essential to ensure that the eID mobile solution meets the strict security requirements of the federal government and keeps German citizens’ information safe. To do so, all four partners developed a holistic security architecture centered around the foundation of smartphone security – the hardware. Thanks to a highly secure chip built directly into the phone, information can be stored locally on the device and gives users full control over their data.

“In addition to the identity card, almost every citizen in Germany owns a smartphone. Thanks to the OPTIMOS project and in cooperation with Samsung and Deutsche Telekom Security, we now have the chance to combine the high level of trust in the physical document with the user-friendliness of the smartphone,” says Dr. Stefan Hofschen, CEO of Bundesdruckerei. “We are thus creating the basis to ensure sovereignty and trust in a world that is becoming increasingly ‘digital’ and ‘mobile’. In the future, digital sovereign identities and authorizations can be used and managed by citizens in a self-determined manner via the app provided by bdr for this purpose”.

An Open Security Platform

This new mobile eID solution was created as part of the OPTIMOS 2.0 project, whose goal is to create an open ecosystem that provides the technology and infrastructure for secure mobile authentication. As such, it was important for all partners to make sure that this new security architecture would be open to many identity service providers.

“The more we digitalize our daily lives, the more important it is to protect our digital identity. At BSI, we develop, promote and certify eID solutions and technologies designed to protect people’s digital identity. As part of the OPTIMOS 2.0 project, our role was to standardize the necessary components, interfaces and processes so that the technology developed would meet the high security standards and be available to as many end users as possible,” said Arne Schönbohm, President of the German Federal Office for Information Security.

To achieve this goal of creating an open ecosystem, Samsung made the Software Development Kit (SDK) for its embedded Secure Element (eSE) available to third parties.¹ This will enable service providers and app developers to create applets for Trusted Service Manager (TSM) that can be loaded into the secure chipset-based platform. As a result, applications and services will be able to work seamlessly with the eID program and German citizens can enjoy them with peace of mind, knowing their information will be protected.

“Together with Samsung and Bundesdruckerei, we created a comprehensive ecosystem for secure digital authentication. This uses the trusted secure elements of smartphones for storing forgery-proof identity information. Our newly developed TSM system is used for the transport of the identities, data storage management and ultimately lifecycle management of each eID, which provides the basis for a multitude of other secure applications,” says Thomas Fetten, CEO of Deutsche Telekom Security GmbH.

The Galaxy S20 Will Be the First Device to Comply With the New Security Requirements

The Samsung Galaxy S20 lineup, including the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra, will be the first smartphone to comply with the BSI’s eID security framework for sovereign use.² Thanks to the security embedded in Samsung’s Galaxy S20, the eID solution offers a “Substantial” level of assurance for secure and seamless electronic interactions under the EU eIDAS Regulation.³ This regulation was designed to ensure EU citizens can use their national eID across borders and helps prevent misuse or alteration of their government-issued IDs.

The Galaxy S20 lineup offers the highest level of encryption available, as illustrated by the Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level (CC EAL) 6+⁴ it recently received. It is the latest Samsung device to feature Samsung’s industry-leading embedded Secure Element (eSE) with other Samsung smartphones to follow. The eSE securely stores sensitive data on the device like credit card information, documents and keys and isolates them for maximum protection. Acting as a safe, a separate secure processor provides an extra layer of security designed to defend against hardware attacks and makes it difficult to access and copy information stored on the device.

What’s Next For Mobile eID?

This is only the beginning. Similar to contactless payments a few years ago, consumers will quickly realize the benefits of having key credentials including their driver’s license, national health insurance cards, or even their car and apartment keys available on their mobile phone, securely stored at all times. Soon, they may also be able to remotely verify their identity to access and send confidential medical records, open a bank account, or vote using their smartphone.

How Can I Enroll?⁵

The eID app will be available to German citizens using Samsung’s Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra later this year. After downloading and installing the Mobile ID application distributed by Bundesdruckerei from Play Store, Galaxy S20 owners can tap their Near Field Communications (NFC) enabled National ID card on the back of their phone to verify their identity and get started. Once verified, the mobile eID will be stored securely on the smartphone and can be used to open a bank account, use eGovernment services and more.⁶

Samsung has released a new software update bringing a range of leading Galaxy S20 features to the Galaxy A series. Galaxy A51 and A71 device users will now be able to harness some of the Galaxy S20 series’ powerful innovations, designed to make the way we capture, connect and share more dynamic than ever before.

Change the Way You Capture

The Galaxy S20 has a camera packed with innovative features for a more professional shooting experience. Galaxy A51 and A71 users can now capture their memories exactly as they happen with such leading S20 features as Single Take.

Single Take takes the burden of choosing a camera mode out of your hands by recording with several camera modes simultaneously. Just by tapping record with the Single Take feature, users can capture up to ten seconds of footage with a wide range of capture modes, including Boomerang, Smart Crop, video and AI filter. Users can then revisit the clips in the Gallery app and choose which capture style they like the best.

Galaxy A51 and A71 users can now also enjoy several Pro Mode functionalities from the Galaxy S20, including Manual Focus and Shutter Speed control. These features give users more control when capturing photos and videos so they can have total command over their shooting experiences.

Users can get creative when capturing after sunset with Night Hyperlapse, and enjoy more personalization with features like My Filters, which lets users create their own personal image filters using existing images in their camera roll.

Share Seamlessly 

The software update brings with it two convenient ways – available originally on the Galaxy S20 series – for users to share media with each other. Quick Share and Music Share make it easier than ever before to stay connected and instantaneously share pictures, videos and music.

When viewing media in the Gallery and looking to share it with friends, users can now harness the Quick Share option to see immediately which users are nearby. Just by tapping the icon, users can then select one or more friends to seamlessly share their media with.

Music Share lets friends connect to a user’s Bluetooth speaker directly via the user’s smartphone. By swiping down on the Quick Panel and tapping on the Music Share icon, users can easily activate or deactivate this innovative feature to instantly enjoy good music with their friends. Users can also head to Settings > Connections > Bluetooth > Advanced to toggle Music Share on or off.

Let Your Device Do the Work

Galaxy A51 and A71 users are already able to do more of what they love with their smartphones, but this update brings even more Keyboard and Gallery functionalities to users that are designed to make their day-to-day interactions with their smartphones as convenient as possible.

When typing in the search bar in the app tray, accessible with just a simple swipe up on the home screen, users will now be presented with a range of predicted Apps, Settings, Quick Panel and Contacts search results before they even finish typing their query, and can then explore even more results by hitting the ‘See more results’ button. Enhanced keyboard functionalities also give users more freedom when typing; users can now translate text directly from the keyboard tray and easily undo and redo their most recent keyboard action with an intuitive swipe left or right with two fingers on the keyboard.

With the Clean View feature, the Gallery will group up to 100 images shot consecutively into one bundle for easy viewing – users can choose their favorite to serve as the group’s thumbnail – and an organized Gallery. Quick Crop lets users trim their photos right from the media viewing screen. When zooming in on an image with two fingers, the icon will appear on the left hand side of the screen for users to instantly save the edited picture to their Gallery.

Updates such as these, bringing flagship features to Galaxy A devices, are part of Samsung’s ongoing efforts to provide all users with the the best smartphone experiences. The Galaxy S20’s high refresh rate is a revelation when it comes to gaming. For fighting games in particular, in which split-second decision making can prove the difference between victory and defeat, a display with a rapid refresh rate can provide users with a vital edge.

“The key to winning in a fighting game is to effectively evade attacks from your opponent while timing your own attacks well,” noted Michael Kim, an engineer from the Display Group at Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Communications Business. “A screen with a high refresh rate displays more images every second, allowing you to pick up the movements of your opponent’s character quicker and act that little bit faster. A 120Hz display shows a new image every 0.008 seconds.” Using a display that features so many changes in a short period of time additionally has applications in underpinning and facilitating 3D gaming.

Enjoy a Smooth Screen Flow When Surfing the Web

While a 120Hz refresh rate serves to optimize a user’s gaming experience, the original goal behind developing this high screen refresh rate was to provide a better screen control environment, making it easier for users to touch, scroll and swipe their screens. “When users are scrolling on their display, the smoother the screen will flow, resembling the analog experience, the more comfortable it is to use,” explained Kim. “The resulting effect is that of watching something happen in real life right before your eyes.”

Feeling like you have a good grip on your smartphone is also a sensation closely related to a display’s refresh rate. Many conventional displays will scan a finger scrolling on the screen up to 120 times per second, but the Galaxy S20 goes beyond this by scanning finger movement up to 240 times per second. This instant feedback goes as far as possible to make users feel as if they are manipulating something physical when scrolling on-screen. “A high refresh rate on a display helps give a real, grounded sense of touch to users when they are scrolling,” noted engineer Sung-won Ryu. “You can actually experience that fast reaction speed in real-time on the display.”

The high refresh rate granted by the 120Hz display also improves a user’s experience when they are surfing the web, using social networking services and reading webcomics. When scrolling by pushing along your screen from bottom to top, the consecutive frames of a webcomic can remain hidden until this upwards scroll has been fully completed. “With a 120Hz display, you can see any and all contents on a web page even during the scrolling action,” explained Kim. “This makes for a much more satisfactory user experience.”

A Display that Optimizes the Color Gamut Based on Usage

The color gamut of a display refers to the limited spectrum of color expression within which a given screen or monitor will output content. Generally, the color gamut used for digital appliances is sRGB, first introduced in 1996 for Internet, computer, printer, digital camera and scanner devices. However, the Galaxy S20 harnesses the DCI-P3 standard as well as the conventional sRGB one, a color area formulated by the film industry for digital movies. The benefit this offers users is a darker and richer color gamut as compared to sRGB, and the Galaxy S20 also supports Automatic Color Management which optimizes the color gamut based on the type of content a user is enjoying.

“For the best viewing experience, the color gamut should reflect that of the images being shown on the display,” explained Sung-Won Ryu. “The Galaxy S20’s display will automatically adjust its color gamut from DCI-P3 for HDR videos to sRGB for images. This automatic shift to present the richest color possible is a strength that only the Dynamic AMOLED 2X possesses. Dynamic AMOLED 2X presents users with deeper and darker colors onscreen but also achieves precise color rendering thanks to this control over color gamuts.”

A Careful Balance of High Resolution, High Luminance and High Refresh Rate

“When designing our flagship products, our goal was to offer users the 120Hz display experience within a thin smartphone,” noted Kim. But providing this experience that married high resolution with a high refresh rate was a challenge even for the Samsung developers and their expertise in developing best-in-class technologies for TV, monitors and displays. “TV displays benefit from unlimited power supplies and four to five times bigger pixels compared with smartphones,” noted Kim. “Given that smartphones have more components, from the AP to the 5G chipset to the 5G antenna, the power supply has to be negotiated between all these parts.”

“In theory, having both a high resolution and a high refresh rate on a mobile device is feasible, but given power management and device use time considerations, we have been cautious when implementing these capabilities,” noted Ryu. “We are constantly developing our technological innovations to reduce power consumption by studying many different device use scenarios.”

One of the key determining factors of display performance is brightness. The brightness of a display is expressed with the term ‘luminance’, or the amount of light per unit area reflected from an object. The Galaxy S20’s luminance is a maximum of 1,200 nits, expressing both dark and bright shades in order to showcase images clearly, even during the daytime. “There are many elements to consider when it comes to screen quality, but it is a given that the higher a display’s luminance, the better the display looks,” said Kim. “The Galaxy S20’s display is at the maximum brightness accorded by the greatest possible extent of power management.”

Some users may not be aware of the true strength of a 120 Hz display. “With apps such as YouTube now offering videos in basic HD quality, when you go back and watch older videos on the platform in SD, you realize that the quality is actually much lower than you originally thought,” explained Kim. “The same is true of 120Hz displays. People may have no complaints about a 60Hz display, but once they get used to the quality of 120Hz, they can never go back to 60Hz.”

Bringing 120Hz to More Devices

Galaxy smartphones displays have always brought users new and innovative technologies, from high resolution and high pixels per inch (PPI) to AMOLED technology and Automatic Color Management. Looking forward, both Kim and Ryu are confident that there are still limitless possibilities for innovation when it comes to developing better displays.

“We can improve a user’s display experience by developing optimized device power management,” noted Kim. “We will continue to work hard to provide the best possible experience to all users.”

“By developing our high refresh rate technology, we are confident that 120Hz technologies will one day be available not just for the Galaxy S series, but across various other device lines, too,” affirmed Ryu.

Read on to find out how the team completely reimagined the retail experience, rethinking everything from product kits and uniforms to packaging and furniture, to make Samsung stores more sustainable.

Multipurpose Merchandising

There are currently more than 3,000 Samsung retail stores worldwide, and each one acts as the face of the brand. Each allows customers to interact with Samsung and experience a wide range of innovations firsthand. Now, when customers enter a store, they’ll see products promoted with merchandising that’s reflective of the company’s green values.

One of the first aspects of the shopping experience that the team revamped was the visual merchandising (VMD) kits that showcase new Samsung products. Whereas previously, each product featured a custom merchandising kit that was discarded after use, now, product merchandising is modular and designed to swap easily in and out.

“From the planning stage, we tried to make the VMD kits like building blocks that could be easily assembled and disassembled,” said Leo Lee, a member of the retail marketing team. “We wanted to make some parts replaceable and others reusable. This helps the environment because it allows kits to be reused several times, and it makes it easier to install them in stores around the world.”

In addition to reducing waste, the modular kits are created utilizing plastic recycled from bottles and CDs. “Let’s say we used 100 tons of plastic to create a particular kit before,” said Lee’s colleague on the retail marketing team, Ryoung Hur. “Making this change allowed us to reduce that amount to 70 tons. Going forward, we plan to continue increasing our use of recycled plastic, and reducing our reliance on new plastic.”

There were, however, a number of challenges that the team needed to overcome to ensure that the recycled plastic wouldn’t compromise the quality of the kits. Not only can recycled plastic increase the rate of defects in the manufacturing process, it can also make it difficult to produce pure white materials. The team overcame those challenges, Hur explained, through continuous investment and tireless efforts.

With an eye toward the future, the team designed the new, environmentally conscious VMD kits to be compatible with a variety of modern innovations, including NFC chips. As Yeonjin Kang, a member of the VMD team, explained, “We developed solutions that combine environmentally conscious materials with digital elements, and we’ve worked with various brands to produce them. We’re constantly receiving inquiries regarding these types of kits, and the feedback we’ve received has been nothing but positive.”

Environmentally Conscious Clothing

You may have come across clothing or fabrics whose tags attest that they’ve been made using organic cotton, or cotton grown without the aid of any form of chemical treatment, such as herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers. The environmental benefits of using organic cotton are considerable, as studies suggest that compared to general cotton production, organic utilizes 90 percent less freshwater and 60 percent less electricity, and can help reduce cotton’s impact on global warming by as much as 46 percent.

Recently, Samsung Electronics switched to using organic cotton for all official clothing. “If you think about it, with our retail uniforms and the promotional T-shirts that global staff wear for new product launches, we produce a lot of clothing,” said Kang. “Because these T-shirts need to be mass produced and are frequently replaced, we chose to make the switch to organic cotton to help minimize their environmental impact. Because we handled the entire process – from selecting materials to design and production – we were able to make this shift in a cost-effective manner.”

“We visited manufacturing site and inspected each part of the process,” Kang continued. “We also plan to change our clothing’s packaging to polybags, which are manufactured from materials recycled from abandoned LDPE (low-density polyethylene), and we’re constantly working with manufacturers to explore ways to make this aspect of our operations more environmentally conscious.”

Prioritizing Recycling From the Production Stage

Because products packaged using excessive amounts of materials can make sorting and recycling difficult, Samsung’s retail team incorporated a variety of enhancements that make recycling its packaging nice and simple.

As Soohwan Chi, from Samsung’s retail design team, explained, “To make recycling easier, we replaced elements like vinyl and Styrofoam with recyclable paper. We also switched to printing with soy ink, which can help simplify recycling even further.”

“Encouraging this kind of thoughtful approach to manufacturing,” Hur added, “is just as important as emphasizing thoughtful disposal. It can only be achieved,” he continued, “when each and every element of the manufacturing process has been carefully considered.”

“For example, to make our VMD kits easier to install and recycle, we minimized the use of glues, screws and tape, and developed an easy-to-apply hook mechanism,” said Hur. “We also simplified their aesthetic elements to prevent chemical paints from disrupting the sorting process when the kits are recycled.”

Connecting with Consumers on an Important Cause

The need to go green – to take steps to protect the environment from the effects of global warming – has never been greater. Thankfully, it seems with each passing day, more people – millennials in particular – are realizing the importance of sustainable efforts, and are showing greater interest in how products are made and how they impact the environment.

Samsung’s retail team takes that interest as inspiration to continue to explore new ways to emphasize the importance of going green. “Because I work in our retail stores, I’m constantly thinking about what messages to deliver to our customers,” said Lee. “Developing a retail experience that both reflects Samsung’s standards of excellence and is conscious of the environment allows us to communicate just how important sustainability is to our company.”

Because there’s no single solution for going green, the team is committed to trying anything that can help. It’s a step-by-step process, the team explained, that’s paying dividends for the environment, and ensuring that visitors to Samsung stores enjoy the best possible experience.

This is where the device’s user interface (UI) comes into play, with the experience of the users in interacting with it referred to as the user experience (UX). In 2018, Samsung introduced an improved version of its standard user interface and software overlay called ‘One UI’.

As well as working to make them intuitive, consistent, and effective, UX designers try to base user interface interactions on the way we use physical objects in the wider world to promote familiarity. For example, users turn a digital page in an e-book just like they would a physical page, or slide their cards up in the Samsung Pay app in a way that mimics how they would remove a card from their wallet. But what do UX designers do when there is no way to base interactions on real-world actions? Samsung Newsroom sat down with the designers of One UI to find out.

An Interface to Help You Stay on Task

The concept of One UI started with the idea to try and help the busy users of today stay focused by simplifying their interactions with their smartphones. One UI designer Soeyoun Yim explained that the process of designing the interface was undertaken based on the concept of ‘everyday simplicity’, saying that, “One UI was designed to help users focus on important tasks by eliminating distractions.”

Now, One UI has been further developed into ‘One UI 2’, which was unveiled at the end of last year. This upgraded interface incorporates the icons from One UI in new styles and configurations, and includes revamped colors and movements. In addition, One UI 2 makes the icons more conspicuous with distinct color tones and motions, for instance when the ‘settings’ icon trembles to let users know that an update is underway.

‘Simplicity’ – to Help You Focus on What Matters

Simplicity was the number one priority for the designers when developing One UI 2. To that end, the pop-up screens that appear at the top and bottom of the screen were made more compact and simplistic to keep users from getting distracted while making use of features.

The camera app has also been simplified to ensure that the basic operation of the app isn’t impeded, and prevent users from getting distracted while they’re taking their picture. Taehee Hwang, the UX designer responsible for the camera app, outlined how this makes the user experience more straightforward. “The basic photo and video modes can be accessed at the bottom of the screen, while special modes such as the Food and Night modes can be accessed by selecting or swiping through to ‘More’,” she related. “This simplifies what is displayed on the screen so that users can concentrate on taking their picture.”

‘Comfort’ – So Your Eyes and Fingers Can Take It Easy

Making user interactions more comfortable and facilitating one-handed use were also at the fore of the development of One UI 2. Whereas One UI designated the top and bottom sections of the screen as the ‘viewing’ and ‘interaction’ areas respectively, One UI 2 allows the majority of tasks to be completed within the lower area of the screen. Moreover, for actions that require interaction in the top part of the screen, unnecessary finger movements were minimized to improve comfort and convenience.

The same principles were applied to the keyboard, making it possible for users to perform other tasks while keeping their fingers within the keyboard area. For example, by long-pressing the space bar, users can now control the position of the cursor from within the keyboard window without having to interact with the main text body. In addition, users can swipe left or right with two fingers to undo and redo actions, and adjust the dimensions of their keyboard to better match the size of their hands.

The ‘dark mode’ feature has been shown to reduce eyestrain, and One UI 2 has expanded the number of apps within which it can be applied. “Dark mode has been expanded to a number of apps that it wasn’t previously accessible in,” said Yim, “To make it more comfortable to use devices in the dark we are also applying a darkening filter to background wallpaper displays.” Yim also spoke to the designers’ efforts to further ease eyestrain, relating that, “An algorithm has been incorporated that analyzes the background image on the lock screen and automatically shows the time in the color that will show up best against that backdrop.”

‘Convenience’ – Streamlining Rich Experiences

The ‘Single take’ feature comes with One UI 2 on the Galaxy S20 and is capable of using Ultra wide, Live focus, and short video features to deliver various photo styles and results, all with a single shot. “We started by asking ourselves two questions,” explained Hwang, “Firstly, how can we make sure the users enjoy the moment? And secondly, how can we deliver a variety of results without requiring the user to do more than take a simple, standard shot?”

While explaining what went into developing the feature, Hwang explained that, “Since this feature was to be introduced on the Galaxy S20, we decided that a help message should be displayed when the user entered Single take mode. Moreover, to allow the user to view a wide range of results simultaneously on the same screen we introduced a new kind of viewer.”

The video calling feature was also further upgraded with the integration of ‘Google Duo,’ Google’s simple, high-quality video calling app. Sueyeon Lee, the designer in charge of integrating Google Duo and One UI, elaborated on the designers’ efforts to improve convenience, saying, “Our goal was to make the user experience more convenient by making the features of Google Duo the default for Galaxy devices.”

Lee went on to highlight some other user experiences specific to Galaxy devices, remarking that, “5G video calls have been brought to smartphones for the first time with this integration, allowing users to experience FHD video calls and use AR emojis and wide screen mode within their video calls.” Lee finished by saying, “We will continue to develop advanced, integrated communication experiences linked to the phone, message and contact apps.”

The Galaxy Z Flip represents a totally new style of device with a revolutionary format. Thus, the question of how to provide top-tier usability and convenience on the new smartphone required the designers to think outside the box. Hyungwoo Shin, the designer responsible for developing the Galaxy Z Flip’s UI, outlined the development process, saying, “This is a whole new kind of device. We didn’t have access to any sample devices to which we could apply the new UI, so we had to print out screens, attach them to mock-up products and fold and unfold the devices to figure out how best to apply One UI.” In designing this special UI, the designers incorporated the ‘cover display’ aspect, which expands the interface onto the small screen on the outside of the phone that enables users to check the time, read notifications and take selfies when the phone is folded.

Special effort was put into developing the UI for the Galaxy Z Flip’s ‘Flex Mode,’ a feature that divides the screen into two halves when the phone is half-folded and set at a 90-degree angle. Shin explained how the design team catered to this unique form factor, saying that, “Designing a UI that would be suitable for a phone being used in Flex Mode presented a real challenge. We ended up creating a new layout that reflected the UIs seen on the foldable phones of the past.”

‘Accessibility’ – Fair and Available to Everyone

‘Accessibility’ means how easy to use and available a device’s features are to a wide range of users. The designers of One UI 2 worked to provide an equally accessible experience to everyone – regardless of age or disability – with features such as high contrast themes, which improve usability for visually impaired users. Samsung additionally consulted with differently-abled users to receive feedback on accessibility within the UI and to hear the users’ ideas on where there was room for improvement.

As a result, color adjustments and high-contrast features were implemented within the UI to expand usability to more differently-abled users. These changes also make it easier for users to access specialty features within the UI like Light Sensing, which detects nearby lights and informs the user of their status with vibrations, and Live Transcribe, which uses Bixby to transcribe audio messages and nearby noises.

One UI to Satisfy the Individual User

So, what’s next for the One UI design team? Since the first and second incarnations of One UI were about establishing the foundation of the interface, the next steps will focus on catering more to individual users. “Going forward, One UI will offer more customized content,” related Yim. “Active customization will be brought to bear to improve the individual user experience.”

As they continue their development work, the One UI designers will keep working to provide the best possible environment for Galaxy users, while ensuring that the interface is inclusive and makes inconvenience a thing of the past.

Today’s mobile devices may come in all shapes and sizes, but they share one crucial thing in common: they all need to charge.

Yes, as powerful as they’ve become, most mobile devices still require charging every day. To help prevent this daily ritual from becoming a drain on the planet, Samsung Electronics has spent the last few decades refining its charger technology to make the process as environmentally conscious as possible. This not only includes prioritizing various power-saving technologies, but also reducing the use of potentially harmful substances in the manufacturing process.

Under the belief that small adjustments to our daily routines add up to big benefits for the environment, Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Communications Business constantly explores ways to make the world a greener place. Let’s take a look at how the team is reimagining smartphone charging technology.

Tackling the Standby Issue

While many may think that once plugged-in electronics and appliances are switched off, they instantly stop consuming power, in truth, they simply enter standby mode so they can spring back to action as soon as they’re switched back on.

The same goes for our mobile devices’ chargers. Once you disconnect your device, your charger will continue to consume a considerable amount of electricity unless you unplug it from its outlet or shut down your power strip.

Standby power consumption is considered to be a major contributor to the pressing problem of power waste. In an effort to address this issue, in 2012, Samsung successfully reduced the standby power consumption of its flagship Galaxy devices’ chargers to 20mW.¹ In the years since, the company has applied this environmentally conscious enhancement to the chargers of devices throughout its product range.²

Engineer Wonseok Kang, a member of the Mobile Communications Business’s Power Solution Group, summed up both the purpose of the technology and the benefits it presents.

“In order to supply a smartphone with power as soon as it’s connected, a charger must always be ‘running,’” said Kang. “In the past, we simply kept the charger running without regulation. Now, we’ve packed software into the charger that puts it to sleep when a device is unplugged – reducing power consumption to a more environmentally conscious voltage level – and wakes the charger up when a device is connected. It’s an energy-efficient cycle of sorts.”

Efficiency Is Everything

Like standby power consumption, charging efficiency is a key determinant of just how environmentally conscious a charging technology will be. Under perfect conditions, a charger would output 100 percent of the power it receives, achieving 100-percent energy efficiency. Galaxy smartphones’ chargers offer an energy efficiency rating of over 80 percent, which meets the European Union’s standard for Level VI ErP (Energy-Related Products) certification.

Samsung’s developers went to great lengths to enhance the energy efficiency of its chargers, analyzing even the tiniest of components in an effort to maximize functionality. “We focused mainly on improving the circuits of the semiconductors that are used to convert energy,” said Kang. “In the end, we were able to reduce the cumulative electric charge by minimizing energy loss.”

The process of ensuring a consistent level of energy efficiency was challenging, to say the least. “As mobile devices evolve and battery capacities increase, charger specifications have to increase as well,” Kang explained. “From 15 watts to 25, to 45 and beyond, higher specifications require greater functionality. This inevitably leads to a decrease in average energy efficiency. However, our commitment to designing the most efficient chargers possible enabled us to deliver a high level of efficiency with likewise high specs.”

Making Galaxy smartphone chargers environmentally conscious has paid dividends for the environment, resulting in approximately 13 million kilowatts (kW) of energy savings since 2014. That’s equivalent to the energy output of 4.5 hydroelectric power plants!³

Save Plastic, Save the Planet

Today, the world has become so overwhelmed with plastic that the World Economic Forum (WEF) has predicted that the oceans will contain more plastic waste (by weight) than fish by the year 2050. To help tackle pollution and preserve the planet, Samsung has committed to making its innovations more sustainable, which includes maximizing the amount of recycled materials that are used to produce its smartphones’ chargers.

Galaxy smartphone chargers are produced, in part, using environmentally conscious post-consumer materials (PCM).⁴ Created by recycling the resources of previously owned products, PCM helps reduce the amount of potentially harmful substances that are created during the plastic production process. As of 2019, approximately 5,000 tons of PCM have been used to manufacture Galaxy smartphone chargers.⁵

Samsung’s developers worked hard to ensure that adding PCM to charger designs wouldn’t compromise the overall quality of the final products. “Adding PCM can affect a product’s durability or performance,” said Pranveer Singh Rathore, a fellow engineer and colleague of Kang’s from Samsung’s Advanced CMF Lab. “However, after numerous attempts, we managed to make our designs both aesthetically pleasing and satisfyingly durable, while preserving the intrinsic properties of the substance.”

Because they directly receive electric currents, chargers are sensitive to heat, and must therefore be adequately flame retardant. As Rathore explained, “Prioritizing recycled materials and satisfying strict flame-retardancy standards at the same time was quite a challenge. However, by collaborating with various divisions and departments, we were able to come up with a method to increase the product’s quality and prevent the physical properties of the material itself from deteriorating.”

“It is never easy to go beyond the existing legal standards and design products that consider the environment – especially when other companies aren’t doing the same,” Rathore continued. “Nevertheless, I am confident that Samsung’s efforts will positively affect green initiatives going forward.”

Like his colleague, Kang sees a bright future ahead for the development of environmentally conscious mobile devices. “Raising awareness of things like smartphone chargers’ power consumption may eventually lead consumers to consider energy efficiency as an important factor when choosing a new device,” said Kang.

Enhanced Hardware Security

Just like the way locksmiths can use tools to get past a locked door, malicious actors can manipulate components (physical attacks), provoke hardware errors (fault attacks), or analyze heat and electromagnetic emissions (side-channel attacks) to breach smartphone security. These attacks, also known as hardware attacks, can only happen if the hacker gets hold of the device physically.

The Galaxy S20’s secure processor is Samsung’s solution to counter against hardware attacks. The component is a physical chip that provides an isolated space to protect confidential data in the device. In addition to the continuous scrambling and encrypting of confidential data, it employs a physical shield to guard against physical attacks. The component can also detect invalid voltage or temperature changes and is equipped with security algorithms to thwart side-channel attacks.

An Extra Level of Protection for Your Data

The secure processor protects a wide range of valuable data on your smartphone, starting from the lock screen. It ensures that your lock screen PIN, pattern, or password are not susceptible to guesses by making it almost impossible for attackers to reset the error counter, which monitors the number of failed unlock attempts.

In addition to lock screen data, the secure processor can also process blockchain private keys, which are similar to banking passwords for crypto-currency wallets. The component even supports Strongbox Keymaster, meaning it provides hardware protection for private keys or sensitive data on third-party apps.

As a part of Samsung Knox’s multi-layered security platform, the secure processor will not only keep your data protected on the go but also enable safer, more convenient mobile experiences in the future.

Brighten Your Stories

Emojis, stickers, and GIFs are the lifeblood of chats and interactions on the smartphone. Samsung Keyboard’s Emoji and sticker suggestions features help you find the right icons automatically based on the context of your conversations.^{2, 3} For example, if you type the word “love,” the keyboard will show the heart emoji in the prediction window. And by pressing the sticker suggestions bubble, the feature will pull up relevant stickers from Bitmoji and mojitok. You can then simply tap the emoji or sticker to insert it into your message.

To enable Emoji and sticker suggestions, enter “Smart typing” in settings and toggle the buttons next to the “Suggest emojis” and “Suggest stickers while typing” options. You can choose your sticker sources by entering the “Suggest stickers while typing” menu.

The S20’s keyboard also lets you search for GIFs and stickers. All you need to do is type a keyword into the search bar and it will show you images that can bring your stories to life. Tap the Expand Toolbar icon, click “Search” and type in your keywords. The feature will then pull up different categories of search results.

In addition, you can even search for contacts, images in your gallery, and content on Netflix and Spotify to share with your friends right in the keyboard without switching between apps.⁴ You can access these search functions by tapping on the related icons in the Keyboard Toolbar.

Forgot Your Password? No Worries!

Samsung Keyboard makes online shopping and website logins quick, easy, and secure.⁵ It’s integrated with Samsung Pass, which means you can safely store your bank details, passwords and other personal information in the keyboard. When you want to make a payment online or log into a website, simply tap the Expand Toolbar icon and select “Samsung Pass”. After scanning your fingerprint, the feature will pull up your bank account information and other personal details. Tap on the information you need and it will automatically appear in the “Enter message” box.

Your Personal Word Wizard

We’ve all been there: just as you are about to send a work email on your phone, you accidentally delete a whole paragraph. Without Ctrl+Z on your smartphone keyboard, all you can do is rewrite the paragraph again.

Fixing mistakes on the Samsung Keyboard is easy. Just swipe left or right on the keyboard with two fingers and it will undo or redo your changes.

The Samsung Keyboard also brings the translator right to your fingertips for when you are typing. The feature is powered by Google, and it lets you translate and switch between languages right in the app you are using.⁶

To access the translation feature, tap the “Translate” icon in the expanded toolbar. Select a target language afterwards and enter the original text in the text box. The translated text will then appear in the “Enter message” box.

Make It Your Own⁷

We all have different preferences when it comes to smartphone usage. That’s why Samsung Keyboard comes with different customization options, so you can make it truly your own.

If you have big thumbs, try enlarging the keys to make typing easier. You can resize the keys by tapping the “Keyboard size” icon in the expanded toolbar.

You can also reorder the toolbar by long-pressing and dragging icons to make frequently used features instantly accessible.

A display’s ‘refresh rate’ refers to the number of times a monitor loads new information every second. The Galaxy S20 series features a display with a 120Hz refresh rate, ensuring the viewing experience is responsive and satisfying to engage with no matter the task.

Not only is the display easier on your eyes, the faster refresh rate means anything with motion or animation appears much smoother. Whether you are scrolling through your favorite website, flipping through apps on your Home screen, or playing a game, you will get a more polished experience.

Natural, Dynamic Interaction

One UI 2’s motion and interaction design are optimized for various Galaxy devices, from smartphones to foldables and tablets. Regardless of screen size, Samsung designed the UI to allow for effortless screen transitions, showcasing the swift and elegant design achievements made over the years. Those design achievements have culminated in a UI for the Galaxy S20 with intuitiveness, seamlessness, tangibility, and vibrancy at its core.

From picking up an incoming phone call to moving an app’s icon around the Home Screen, the Galaxy S20’s interaction responses fit intuitively with the way the device functions.

Interface responses are also seamless, allowing for smooth and continuous feedback to your touch inputs. When launching an app from the Home Screen, for example, the icon expands, and the screen switches to a new page in one fluid motion that feels more natural.

In addition to its seamlessness, the Galaxy S20 responds in real-time to user control and understands delicate touches to provide tangible, satisfying feedback.

Further adding to that experience is the streamlined style of notifications and other alerts the Galaxy S20 provides. Vivid animations and concise layouts deliver information in a clear, vibrant manner.

Tactile Satisfaction

A phone’s haptic feedback is that satisfying kinesthetic communication—or vibration—you get from your phone when interacting with it. In designing the Galaxy S20’s haptic feedback, Samsung prioritized two things: a satisfying sensation and applying haptic feedback to relevant features and actions. One of the areas you will feel the sensations is the camera.

Fine-tuned vibrations complement the S20’s powerful camera when pressing to take a picture, zooming in and out, and adjusting the Pro mode controls, such as the shutter speed and aperture. That same satisfying haptic sensation has been applied to many other features throughout the Galaxy S20.

When quickly flipping through the Contact list to search for “Mom,” for example, a vertical index appears on the right side. When scrolling through the index, you will get enhanced haptic feedback that signifies moving from one letter to the next in the index. Not only does it make it easier to find “M” in the index, it reduces the potential of skipping past your destination when scrolling. So, you get more precision when looking up friends, family, or business contacts. Toggle switches also have a gratifying new haptic design that mimics a light switch, so you will really feel like you are switching features on and off. The keyboard has also received significant improvements in haptic feedback.

When typing, more precise and refined feedback allows for a better overall experience. The haptic feedback also varies by input, providing distinct vibrations for regular keys, feature keys, and delete keys. There are also noticeable differences in feedback when holding down the backspace button to delete characters and when moving the cursor where you will find concise, tactile sensations.

Sound for a New Experience

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but songs and sounds can form lasting memories. Samsung took that lesson to heart by designing a satisfying auditory experience for the Galaxy S20. This year’s Over the Horizon song, for example, was built around the theme of ‘Digital Wellbeing’. The iconic ringtone features 26 monochords to deliver a soothing sonic experience powered by nature, reminding listeners to indulge in the delights of life offline.

There are four sound themes to choose from on the Galaxy S20, including Galaxy, Calm, Retro, and Fun. Each theme applies to the ringtones, notifications, and system sounds.

The Galaxy theme applies the classic Samsung sounds, including Over the Horizon. Tranquility and acceptance are at the heart of the Calm theme, which leaned on the atmosphere of a coffee house or beach for inspiration. Samsung styled the Retro theme after the iconic sounds of the ‘80s, including the video games and pop music of the era. Finally, the Fun theme embraces silliness and optimism, drawing inspiration from upbeat pop hits for a more light-hearted sonic experience.

But beyond just offering these innovative camera capabilities to ensure your memories are captured just as they happen, the Galaxy S20’s camera also features a range of capabilities developed to help you capture, view, edit and share your photos and videos as seamlessly as possible, from taking photos and managing your gallery to sharing your moments with friends.

Capture Freely

Custom Filter lets you create and customize your own personal photo filters using existing pictures, including those you have taken using the Camera app. You can now personalize your shots to match your own aesthetic and color tone preferences, both before and after taking pictures.

­Furthermore, for the most seamless video experience possible, you can switch between the front and rear cameras whilst recording a 4K UHD video – meaning you’ll never miss a chance to capture your priceless moments from every angle. Whilst recording a video, select the ‘camera switch’ icon on the bottom right of the screen to change between the front and rear cameras.

View Easily

With the Clean View feature, the Gallery app can group up to 100 consecutive images into one bundle based on when they have been shot for easy viewing. You can then easily review each bundle and select your favorite picture to serve as the group’s thumbnail.

The Gallery also offers enhanced search capabilities. Compared to the previous iteration, the improved search now shows a more diverse array of results when you search by time or place keywords. If your search term results in nothing to display, your S20 will suggest similar search terms to help you find what you are looking for, with greater ease.

Edit & Share Quickly

Highlight reel creates a dynamic video clip out of your favorite photos and videos. You can either simply enjoy this curated selection of your best snaps or further personalize your reel by amending the duration, adding text, changing the background volume or music and more.

To help you swiftly share high-resolution photos and videos with your friends, Samsung has provided users with Quick Share. It allows you to easily see which users are nearby so that you can select and share high-resolution pictures and videos with multiple people – just by tapping on the icon¹.

This software update brings select Galaxy S20 photo and video experiences to the Galaxy S10 and Note10 series. With Single Take, stay in the moment while you capture the moment using integrated AI technology. Single Take uses the camera system and AI to capture a number of photos and videos at once and recommends the best shot for you².

With an improved Night Mode on the Galaxy S10 series, and the addition of Night Hyperlapse on both Galaxy S10 and Note10 series³, you’ll be able to capture even more amazing photos and videos even in low light.

When you’ve captured that perfect image, Custom Filter lets you create your own filter with colors and styles you like from a favorite photo serving as inspiration. This creates a reusable filter that can be applied to future photos when captured.

For the aspiring filmmaker, Pro Video gives you even more control, allowing you to adjust settings like ISO, shutter speed and exposure level. You can also switch between the front and rear cameras while recording video.

Intelligent Gallery

This update also brings a variety of gallery features to help you organize your content. Thanks to AI technology, with Clean View enabled, the Gallery app automatically groups together similar shots of the same subject for a more organized gallery⁴. Users can easily review similar shots and select their favorite to serve as the photo group’s thumbnail. When viewing a photo in the gallery, you can zoom in on an image and press Quick Crop, located at the top left-hand corner, to crop photos to your desired size.

Easy Sharing Capabilities⁵

You can now share more content quickly. With Quick Share, you can see which of your contacts are nearby and share photos, videos, or even large files with multiple people. With Music Share, you can extend your paired Bluetooth connection and you don’t need to disconnect for a friend to play their music on a speaker or car stereo.

Thanks to a partnership with premium Danish textile brand Kvadrat, the latest Samsung accessories for the Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy Watch Active2 are no exception.

Accessories for Good

When developing accessories for the Galaxy S20 series and other of the company’s latest products, Samsung made the decision to partner with Kvadrat, a company rooted in Scandinavian design tradition that has acquired the European Union’s Ecolabel certification – a certification known for its strict judgment criteria.

Following the sustainable practice of upcycling, the special Galaxy S20+ phone case is made up of re-purposed 500ml plastic bottles that are melted and reformulated into textile yarns. Upcycling, also known as ‘creative reuse’, is the process of transforming end-of-life products into new materials that not only are of better quality than the original, but also benefit the environment. In the case of Kvadrat’s yarn-making process, one plastic bottle can be repurposed to produce 2 Galaxy S20+ phone cases.

These recycled yarns help to reduce the number of plastic bottles found in landfills and are produced in a way that reduces the amount of carbon dioxide emitted during manufacturing as compared with traditional material processes. The plastic bottle-sourced yarn is formed in an eco-friendly process that preserves non-renewable energy resources. Samsung is the first company among major brands in the mobile industry to have produced a phone case for its flagship device using recycled materials.

The Galaxy S20+ phone case made with textiles by Kvadrat follows the sustainable practice of upcycling by transforming end-of-life plastic bottles into recycled polyester yarns, from which cases can then be fashioned.

These recycled yarns are eco-friendly because they reduce the amount of PET bottles in landfills; in the U.S. alone, it is estimated that over 60 million of these bottles end up in landfills every single day. Each recycled 500ml plastic bottle can create 2 phone cases, allowing users the peace of mind that with the purchase of this special phone case, they are actively contributing to the reduction of plastic pollution.

The recycled yarns are also manufactured in a way that reduces carbon dioxide emissions as compared to traditional processes. Compared to conventional polyester production methods, Kvadrat’s recycled yarns are formed in a process that consumes less energy and preserves precious oil resources.

Last year, Samsung announced a partnership with the UN Development Programme to support the Sustainable Development Goals (also known as the Global Goals) which address some of the biggest challenges faced around the world, including the fight for climate action. In line with this, a portion of revenue from sales of the Samsung Global Goals edition of the Galaxy S20+ case made with Kvadrat textiles will be donated to UNDP in support of the 17 Global Goals¹.

As well as purchasing the Samsung Global Goals edition case, Galaxy users can also download the Samsung Global Goals app in order to discover more ways to get involved with the Samsung Global Goals initiative. With the app, users can learn more about each of the Global Goals and the issues they seek to tackle with detailed information, facts and figures on each Goal available. The app also helps raise money for the Global Goals, firstly by allowing users to donate directly to the Global Goals on the UNDP website and secondly by collecting ad revenue for the UNDP whenever users interact with ads on the app.

In addition to producing a line of cases for the Galaxy S20+, Samsung will also be releasing straps for the Galaxy Watch Active2 made out of Kvadrat textiles and other sustainable materials for those eco-minded Watch users.

Samsung is looking to not only promote sustainable product cycles but also to provide users with more options than ever when looking to make eco-friendly choices for the future.

Last week, I had the pleasure of joining Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon to discuss Samsung’s latest mobile innovation, the Galaxy S20 series, and how the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Mobile Platform enables new and immersive experiences powered by 5G. It’s another step in Samsung’s democratization of 5G.

The Galaxy S20 series empowers our consumers to engage with their smartphones in new ways, which is why we focused on enabling 5G. The high-speed and ultra-low latency of the Galaxy S20 series will allow users to upload, stream and download content at unprecedented rates¹. Because we know our consumers want full access to 5G connectivity regardless of where they are or what carrier they use, the Galaxy S20 series offers 5G support for all types of 5G networks, regardless of frequency². This is only the beginning.  

2020 will be the Year of Galaxy 5G

We want 2020 to be the year that every consumer experiences the benefits of 5G connectivity, starting with the Galaxy S20 series. Samsung’s new turnkey solution is a dedicated tamper-resistant strongbox that securely stores users’ confidential and cryptographic data such as pin numbers, passwords and even crypto-currency credentials separate from the typical mobile memory such as embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS).

The S3K250AF-based SE combines a microcontroller, advanced hardware-level protection and an optimized secure OS. With a CC EAL 5+ certified-hardware, the highest level received by a mobile component, and dedicated protection software, the solution ensures top-notch security assurance on mobile devices. While current smartphones or tablets already have strong security in place to fend off possible tampering, the security-dedicated chip adds extra countermeasures to defend against possible attacks such as reverse engineering, power glitches and laser attacks, making it extremely harder for others to access or copy stored confidential data. In addition, the SE solution manages failed attempts and prevents replay attacks by accepting only the latest authentication request as a valid one.

Samsung’s new SE solution is currently in mass production and is featured in Samsung’s recently-announced Galaxy S20 series smartphones.

Capture with Crystal Clarity: 108MP/64MP High Resolution

More resolution means more details. The Galaxy S20’s camera offers super-high resolution, so you can capture the details every time.  The Galaxy S20 Ultra features a 108MP sensor, while the S20 and S20+ feature a 64MP sensor. Although cropping a shot used to mean losing details, with the high-resolution sensors on the Galaxy S20 you have plenty of resolution to crop and still get crisp, clear images.

It all starts with a fundamental change to the sensor architecture, both in terms of the size of the image sensor and the technology incorporated within. The larger sensors take in more light, so you get rich image quality even in low light situations.

The S20 Ultra takes things a step further with the 108MP sensor which switches between nona-binning and re-mosaic technologies to provide images with more clarity even in very low light or bright environments.

• Nona-binning for superior image quality: Nona-binning technology merges nine pixels into one, so the 108MP sensor provides a 12MP photo. Larger pixels produced by the nona-binning technology can capture more light for improved clarity, even in low light conditions.

• Re-mosaic in bright light conditions: Re-mosaic re-arranges color pixels to bring out more details. The re-mosaic algorithm remaps pixels into a conventional RGB pattern, producing more detailed images in bright light conditions. You can easily switch to the 108MP Mode in the Quick Settings menu: Camera > Photo > Ratio > 108MP.

See Further, See Better: Space Zoom with Telephoto Lens

The Galaxy S20’s Space Zoom technology uses a combination of Hybrid Optic Zoom, and super resolution zoom technology which includes AI multi-frame processing (AI-powered digital zoom) to ensure that even when you are far away, you can zoom in close.

The Galaxy S20’s new Hybrid Optic Zoom combines an advanced high-resolution image sensor with an all new lens, which is designed to provide more value to users than traditional optical zoom does. Thanks to this new technology, the Galaxy S20 and S20+ can achieve 3x Hybrid Optic Zoom, while the Galaxy S20 Ultra can achieve 10x Hybrid Optic Zoom. With AI-powered digital zoom, you can see even further, up to 30x on the S20 and S20+ and up to 100x on the S20 Ultra.

To achieve 100x zoom, the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s uses a folded lens and a high-resolution sensor. The folded lens provides up to 10x Hybrid Optic Zoom, while super zoom resolution technology brings an additional 10x zoom with AI multi-frame processing to reduce hand shaking and quality loss at high zoom levels. Images produced are clear thanks to the combination of the lens optics and a sensor crop on the high-resolution sensor.

• 48MP Sensor: The sensor on the S20 Ultra is a 48MP sensor which switches between tetra-binning and re-mosaic depending on the shooting conditions, such as brightness level or zoom ratio. Tetra-binning combines 4 pixels into 1, resulting in a 12MP photo with larger pixels. When the RGB pixels are re-arranged with the re-mosaic technology, each pixel operates independently to use a sensor crop and provides up to 10x high ratio zoom.

• Folded lens: The Galaxy S20 Ultra leverages a folded zoom lens to squeeze more zoom capability into a small space. The lens lays flat and is positioned at the bottom of the camera on the phone. Light coming in from the back of the phone is redirected by a prism into the lens, refracting to the right at a 90-degree angle through a series of stacked optical elements which increases the focal length, much like the way a periscope works.  Cutting down both the height and width of the camera, we are able to deliver groundbreaking zoom capabilities.

Held earlier today in San Francisco, Galaxy Unpacked 2020 saw Samsung officially introduce the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy S20 – devices designed for a new era of mobile innovation. Over the course of the event, presenters including Dr. TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics, outlined how the company’s latest innovations will help launch a new generation of intelligent connections.

Attendees eagerly await the start of Galaxy Unpacked 2020 inside San Francisco’s famous Palace of Fine Arts.

The Future Changes Shape

Samsung wasted no time showing the world that this year’s Unpacked was going to be special. With the introduction of its latest statement-making foldable device, the Galaxy Z Flip, the company showed once again how it is revolutionizing the mobile experience by redefining what a smartphone can do.

After introducing Samsung’s all-new, compact and stylish foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Flip, Rebecca Hirst, Head of Mobile Product Marketing, Samsung Electronics UK, takes a moment to discuss the device’s new form factor and first-of-its-kind display. “With this phone, we’ve done the impossible and created ultra-thin glass that folds,” says Hirst. “Every time you fold it, you’re not just bending glass, you’re bending the laws of physics.”

Hirst treats the crowd to a demonstration of the Galaxy Z Flip’s selfie camera. With the phone in Flex mode, she frames and snaps her selfie on the top half of the screen, and uses the bottom half to open the Gallery app and flip through her photos.

The Galaxy S20 Changes the Mobile Camera Game

Speaking of cameras, Samsung followed up the Galaxy Z Flip’s reveal by unveiling a new series of smartphones designed to fundamentally change the way we capture content.

The Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra’s revolutionary camera system combines advanced AI with Samsung’s largest image sensors yet. This makes Samsung’s newest flagships game-changers for mobile photography – devices that are not only capable of capturing photos and videos in stunning detail, but smart enough to help you choose the best possible shot.

After the smartphones’ unveiling, Drew Blackard, Head of Mobile Product Management, Samsung Electronics America, discusses how the Galaxy S20’s AI technology makes it easy to take advantage of the camera’s advanced hardware.

Filmmakers Colin Rosenblum and Samir Chaudry, hosts of the YouTube channel “Colin and Samir,” offer a demonstration of the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s Space Zoom technology from San Francisco’s scenic Hawk Hill. The most precise zoom function ever built into a smartphone, it’s capable of magnifying shots up to 100 times, and reveals incredible details in the backgrounds of photos.

After the show, Unpacked attendees flock to the event’s experience zone to test out the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s pro-grade camera.

More Partners, More Power: The Galaxy Ecosystem Expands

Samsung also announced exclusive partnerships with some of the biggest names in entertainment, gaming, music and more, and discussed how the features and integrations resulting from those partnerships allow the Galaxy S20 to offer a more powerful mobile experience. One that makes everything we love to do on our phones better and easier.

After revealing her company’s new role as Samsung’s exclusive partner for mobile entertainment, Netflix’s Chief Marketing Officer, Jackie Lee-Joe, discusses some of the can’t-miss content that Galaxy users can look forward to. “In the coming months, Samsung mobile users will have access to a whole host of new and exciting bonus content based on some of your favorite Netflix Originals, accessible through Samsung Daily and Samsung channels,” says Lee-Joe. “The content will shine a light on our diverse mix of creators from all around the world, a selection of whom will be handed a Galaxy S20 to shoot this content themselves, so that they have the freedom to continue inventing new ways to tell stories their way.”

Hiroshi Lockheimer, SVP of Platforms and Ecosystems at Google, outlines his company’s partnership with Samsung to change the way we connect with one another. He describes the decision to deeply integrate Google Duo into the 5G-enabled Galaxy S20 as one of the first steps toward realizing that goal. “Thanks to 5G, the video calls are higher quality, and that makes you feel more connected to the person you’re talking to,” says Lockheimer. “Also, with Duo built right into Galaxy’s native apps … we can help people connect much more seamlessly, without interruption.”

David S. Park, Head of Mobile Channel Marketing, Samsung Electronics America, discusses how, with a fast processor, a 120Hz display, up to 16GB of RAM, and 5G support, the Galaxy S20 takes mobile gaming to the next level. After announcing a partnership to bring Microsoft’s Forza Street to mobile for the first time exclusively through the Galaxy Store, Park highlights a key reason why the Galaxy S20 is perfect for playing the popular game. “Its new Dynamic AMOLED display is the most immersive ever on a Galaxy S device,” Park explains. “So you get smooth motion and clear gameplay.”

Samsung officially introduces the Galaxy Buds+. Describing them as earbuds designed for those who love premium sound, Park explains how enhancements such as two-way speakers, incredibly long battery life and Spotify integration make immersing yourself in your favorite music and podcasts easier than ever.

High-Tech Meets High Fashion

After officially unveiling the Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung took a moment to discuss another exciting partnership that will change how users view their device.

Hirst introduces the crowd to the Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition. Created in partnership with the renowned fashion designer, the device proves once and for all that “high fashion and high-tech go hand in hand.”

Browne describes why he’s particularly excited about his brand’s collaboration with Samsung: “With this device, our worlds meet, bringing together fashion and technology in a one-of-a-kind mobile experience,” says Browne. “We have created something truly special, and we look forward to sharing it with you.”

In our increasingly plugged-in world, it can be easy to forget to take a moment every now and then to stop and smell the roses. Inspired by the simplicity of time spent outdoors and the calming sounds of nature, Samsung’s latest “Over the Horizon” remix is a fully acoustic version of the company’s signature sound designed to help bring you closer to the beauty of the world around us.

With each new generation of Galaxy devices comes a fresh new take on the “Over the Horizon” theme, and at the core of this year’s version is the power of nature itself. In order to capture the harmonious working of the natural world in all its glory, Samsung placed monochords in various natural locations in order to harness the power of nature for music.

Powered by the natural force of running water, the monochords operate thanks to a rotor- and pulley-based mechanism. As the mechanism rotates, it triggers the monochords to pluck their respective strings in the correct order. The resulting musical refrain has the unique characteristic of having been played solely by the force of nature.

On top of the monochord melody, Samsung also emphasized sounds like running water and chirping birds and kept the use of electronic elements to a minimum in order to help maximize the listener’s connection with the relaxing sounds of nature.

To complement the soothing, back-to-nature vibe of this remix, Samsung produced an accompanying video made up of relaxing footage of the natural world in all its glory. From calm woodland groves to awe-inspiring coastal vistas, the video showcases the true beauty of nature as well as the force of it in action as it powers the monochords. On the day the teaser film was released, Samsung also brought its iconic billboards to major landmarks around the world – Callao Square in Madrid, Duomo di Milano in Milan, Hydroproject Building in Moscow, Times Square in New York, and Central Railway Station and Marriott Hotel in Warsaw. From January 30 onwards, Galaxy fans in London and Seoul will also have the opportunity to see the stunning displays in person at Piccadilly Circus and COEX respectively.
