Samsung Electronics announced today the launch of SeeColors app for QLED TV, which is compatible with all Samsung QLED TVs. The SeeColors app^* for QLED TV helps people with Color Vision Deficiency (CVD) identify their personal visual deficiencies through the app. Based on the individual’s results, QLED TVs, featuring 100% color volume, adjust the color settings on the display, allowing viewers with CVD to enjoy a viewing experience with more optimized colors.

Nearly 300 million people globally have CVD, with approximately 8% of men and up to 1% of women affected^**, based on a representative survey conducted in Europe and North America. However, the majority of people with CVD are unaware of their condition and the impact it has on their quality of life.

Through the SeeColors app on the TV, users can identify the type and level of their CVD then directly recalibrate their QLED TV screen based on their personal results. To offer an easy method for people to identify CVD, Samsung Electronics partnered with Professor Klara Wenzel who heads up the Department of Mechatronics, Optics and Mechanical Engineering Informatics at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, to adopt the Colorlite Test, or C-Test, for TV and mobile devices. C-Test, developed by Professor Wenzel, is a digital test that uses the concept of color filters and mathematical modeling to identify CVD. Adopting the C-Test through the SeeColors app has resulted in a simple solution which gives people with CVD the opportunity to see the world through their QLED TVs in more optimized color.

The SeeColors app is available for download from the Smart TV App store. Users can also download the app to conduct the test through Google Play and the Galaxy App Store for Samsung Galaxy smartphones S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, S7, S7 edge and S8 devices. Once users connect their Galaxy smartphone to their QLED TV, the TV will automatically adjust the color setting based on the user’s results.

The SeeColors app is created in partnership with Colorlite®, a Hungarian company that applies certified technology based on 20 years of scientific research to lenses to help people address CVD. The SeeColors app marks the first time Colorlite® is being used on TVs and smartphone devices.

Samsung Electronics has been recognized by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) in its prestigious International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) competition. Samsung has won a total of five accolades including one Gold, two Silver and two Bronze awards. Besides the award-winning products, 21 additional products were selected as finalists, illustrating Samsung’s commitment to innovation and design.

These products include: the Family Hub Refrigerator with a full HD touchscreen that covers much of the right exterior door; the 360 CST Air Conditioner that delivers cool air evenly to all parts of the home; the 2016 Smart TV, which has an out-of-box experience (OOBE) UX that greets users in their own language; and the MX3 A3 printer that enables quick and easy control with its 7-inch LCD touch screen.

Recent years have seen smartphone cameras advance and evolve in incredible ways. While equipped with plenty of features and functions of DSLR cameras that allow users to capture great photos anywhere at any time, previous smartphone cameras didn’t quite stack up to DSLR cameras in terms of taking high quality photographs in low-light environments. However, the new Galaxy S7 has overcome these limitations by employing the Dual Pixel image sensor—a first for a smartphone.

With the new sensor, the camera of the Galaxy S7 allows for fast shooting while ensuring great image quality, regardless of lighting conditions. In addition, the flagship device includes new camera features such as Motion Panorama and Selfie Flash, to provide an entirely new phonetography experience.

Auto Focus: The True Determinant of Competitive Advantage

The Dual Pixel image sensor employed in the camera of the Galaxy S7 splits every single pixel into two photodiodes for on-chip phase detection, promising vastly improved autofocus performance.

Dual Pixel technology, which is utilized in selective, high-end DSLR camera models, as well as those of the Galaxy S7, sends light from the lens to two image sensors separately to adjust the focus, much in the same way that the human eye does. For comparison, only about one percent of image sensor pixels of the Galaxy S6 were capable of recognizing phase and contrast, while 100 percent of the image pixels of the new device can do so.

The advantage of the Dual Pixel image sensor in the Galaxy S7 is most evident when taking pictures in a low-light environment. The newest smartphone model is equipped with 1.4um pixels (a 56 percent increase in size compared to the Galaxy S6) and a large F1.7 aperture (which allows for 25 percent more brightness). Combined, these features enable for 95 percent more light compared to its predecessor, which subsequently results in a much brighter and sharper image. Furthermore, the new model employs autofocusing at considerably faster speeds, allowing for faster shooting.

New Ways to Record Memorable Moments

Samsung introduced the Panorama Shot mode in the Galaxy S in 2010, enabling users to take a photo of a much wider scene than the one visible on the screen. The same feature was installed as the Wide Selfie mode on the front-facing camera of the Galaxy S5 in 2014 to allow for a wide-angle selfie of up to 120 degrees. With the Galaxy S7, Samsung introduced a new kind of panorama mode to upgrade the smartphone photography experience.

The Motion Panorama Shot feature lets one record the movements of the subject being photographed in the Panorama Shot mode. The resulting images are as vivid and vibrant as videos. By simply swiping the captured image or moving the device a bit, users can view the motions of the captured panorama shot.

Another new feature of the Galaxy S7 is Hyperlapse, a variation of time lapse photography tailor-made for smartphones. Through Hyperlapse, users can compress hours of recording into seconds to illustrate the subtle movements of the photographed subject. The device automatically selects frames with soft and stable images, while minimizing camera shake with its adaptive vDIS (Video Digital Image Stabilization) function to produce a stable time lapse video.

The new feature automatically adjusts shooting speed based on the subject’s movements. It shoots slow moving subjects faster, and vice versa, making time lapse recording easier and more intuitive for beginners.

Putting Your Best Face Forward

Samsung has worked to lead the development of front-facing handset cameras since 2002, when it developed the first-ever phone capable of taking selfies. The company has since continued its efforts to increase pixel resolution, support wide-angle photography and introduce brighter lenses on mobile devices. The front-facing smartphone camera has evolved yet again in the Galaxy S7 to better meet the needs of self-expressive consumers.

The front-facing camera, like the rear camera, features an F1.7 lens to delivers bright, colorful selfies, even in low light. It also supports a Selfie Flash feature, which enables the user to use the AMOLED display of the phone as a camera flash when taking selfies in a low light environment (lower than 20Lux).

Taking advantage of the large, 5.1-inch display of the Galaxy S7, the camera flash has a greater but softer light-emitting surface than that of its LED flash. This results in a much softer surface lighting effect, which translates into a more colorful expression of the whole face. Once the device’s camera recognizes your face, you can adjust the intensity and direction of the light in order to create a natural lighting effect to make your facial features appear more defined.

The Galaxy S7 has also improved on its Beauty Face Shot mode by adding a 3D lighting effect to deliver brighter and clearer selfies, while Wide Selfie Shot mode creates a panorama effect. Additionally, the real-time High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature allows for images with even richer colors.

Generally, the design of a smartphone’s UX (user experience) must reflect what users want most from their devices and as such, Samsung Electronics took these needs and demands into careful consideration when refining the most recent additions to the Galaxy S line-up. Included among them are an Always On Display, which lets users check important information like time and notifications without waking the screen, as well as an enhanced processor and optimized software. Perhaps the two best words to describe the resulting UX of the new Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are simple and soft.

An Improved Look and Feel

One of the most visibly notable changes to the UX is the shape of the phone’s icons. Unlike the device’s predecessor, which featured icons of various shapes, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge feature squircle (rounded square) icons to create a more organized, visually pleasing appearance. A user can even apply the squircle shape to third-party app icons by activating the icon customization function.

Samsung has also simplified the lock and home screens. Users can now customize these screens by adding two shortcut icons to their favorite apps. They also have the option of removing weather information from the lock screen.

The camera UX has also been modified. To make the function icons visible at all times, black strips were placed on the top and bottom of the screen. Users can also now launch their favorite camera modes even faster by placing shortcut icons directly on the camera screen.

Improved Usability

In terms of usability, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge boast the recently released, user-friendly Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system, which offers a whole host of new and improved features. Two of the most useful are Samsung Internet 4.0, which offers better privacy and functionality than the native browser, and Cross App, which lets users operate their favorite apps from within other apps.

The updated Smart Switch function lets users connect their devices’ built-in USB connector to other smartphones to transfer not only data files, but also home screen layouts and other phone settings in the same way they could with previous Galaxy models. (Support functions vary from model to model.)

A Cutting Edge UX

The most noteworthy modification of the Galaxy S7 edge’s UX is the enhanced edge screen. Rather than simply providing an aesthetic flair, the edge has been refined to provide practical functions and easier access to users’ frequently used content and tasks.

One way this was accomplished was by expanding the edge panel. While the edge panels of the Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S6 edge+ boast an aspect ratio of 260 pixels, the edge panel of the latest flagship device has nearly doubled in size, enabling users to enjoy richer content on a bigger panel. The 550-pixel display also allows third party companies to showcase even more content on the edge panel, while its horizontal orientation makes it easier to read.

Through Samsung’s ever-growing partnerships, the company has established a diverse collection of content especially for the wider edge panel, and expects it to grow even more now that it has released its Edge Panel SDK. With the strengthening of this third party ecosystem, users can experience a differentiated and richer edge experience through specialized news, sports, finance and mobile shopping apps.

With the Galaxy S7 edge, users can do more, faster, thanks to added features of the edge screen. New functions include Tasks edge, a panel that provides shortcuts to often used app features and tasks, as well as Quick tools, a panel that assists in simplifying everyday life with tools such as a ruler, compass and customizable flashlight.

Existing edge functions have also been improved. The number of apps that users can register in the Apps edge has increased from 5 to 10, while People edge now provides the names in addition to photographs of one’s top contacts, enhancing intuitiveness and readability.

Users can now access all these panels more easily by customizing the location, size and transparency of the Edge handle—the fixed tab that activates the edge features. The Handle will not interfere with any apps in use, so users are free to work or play without the edge panel getting in the way.

Together, these changes promise to let Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge users get even more out of their devices.

The Beauty of Curves

Samsung has done its best to bring every aesthetic detail of the exteriors of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge closer to perfection.

Perhaps the most significant change in the latest design of the Galaxy S flagship series is illustrated in the sleek curves of the devices. All four sides of the device’s glass surfaces are carefully contoured, emulating the form of a three-dimensional water drop. The Galaxy S7 edge in particular features 3D curved glass on both the front and back.

To complete the design, Samsung spent months perfecting the 3D Thermoforming process. This method involves the insertion of glass between two molds, heating it to a pliable forming temperature, and then allowing it to then be pressed into a symmetrical shape. In this process, the glass is shaped in multiple directions at once, giving it its curved form.

To this end, Samsung was able to produce an even more seamless connection between the glass and metal parts from all angles, while smoothly aligning the side keys to the frame. In doing so, the design delivers maximum continuity when the products are held in one’s hand. In addition, the devices boast a slimmer rear camera to lessen the protrusion on the surface, which has increasingly become an area of focus as smartphones get thinner and thinner.

To best accentuate the luxurious appearance of the glass surfaces, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will be available in four different colors: Black Onyx, Gold Platinum, White Pearl and Silver Titanium.

A Grip on Design

Not only do the flagship devices look great, but they feel great, too. With an even slimmer bezel, both the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge boast a narrower body compared to that of their predecessors, resulting in a compact grip despite their large display size (5.1-inch and 5.5-inch, respectively). Combined with the curvy form of the rear glass, these models now provide an even better grip and naturally fit in one hand.

Durability for All Lifestyles

Despite the highly sophisticated design of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, the devices are also rich in features and strong in performance.

With an IP68 rating, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are both water and dust resistance, making them convenient for users of all lifestyles. The models’ USB ports are also now waterproof, even without USB cap. This is highly advantageous, as users need not open and close the port cover to charge the phone’s battery or transfer data.

Furthermore, a MicroSD slot allows for expandable storage and can support just about any SD card on the market, while a larger battery and fast wired and wireless charging speeds mean the devices can do more, longer. Without making any compromises, Samsung took just about everything to the next level with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.

Peter Lik has spent over 30 years pushing the boundaries of fine art. A self-taught pioneer in the field of landscape photography, he has become synonymous with pristine images of cascading waterfalls, ethereal mountain peaks and peaceful desert canyons. Peter sat down with Samsung Newsroom to discuss the latest trends in digital photography and the emergence of the smartphone as a key tool and growing influence for photographers everywhere.

Q. How did you first get into photography?

Peter Lik: When I was 8 years old, my amazing parents bought me the gift of my very first camera – a Kodak Brownie. It was such a special present, considering how humbly we lived in those days. My first image was of a spider web, glistening with morning dew in the family garden. In a single instant, my connection to Mother Nature was solidified. It was a moment that was burned into my brain, my heart, and my soul. I kept that feeling with me until I was old enough to work for my own gear and go after the most beautiful images on the planet. I still hold onto that feeling to this day, and I have never looked back.

Q. What types of cameras have you typically used over the years?

Peter Lik: I have never stuck to one single brand. For me, it’s all about using the best tool for the job. Over the years, I have shot with Linhof, Phase One, Hasselblad, Polaroid, Canon, Nikon, Leica, Fuji, Pentax and of course my Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+!

Q. How has the emergence of digital cameras changed your approach to photography?

Peter Lik: Well, I love that they give me instant feedback! When I captured all 50 of the United States for my 1989 book, Spirit of America, everything was shot on film. Each roll would need to sit tight in its canister until I could return to Australia for developing. At that time in camera technology, you had only your gut to tell you: “You got the shot!” Sometimes it felt like a roll of the dice, not knowing what I was going to get – truly the ultimate game of chance. These days, with their high-quality sensors, powerful shooting modes and multitude of camera settings, smartphones have taken over from point-and-shoot cameras as the de facto go-to pocket camera for most photographers.

Q. Roughly how often do you use your smartphone to take photographs?

Peter Lik: My smartphone is always with me, 24 hours a day, right in my pocket. The incredible convenience makes it impossible not to love. I have captured some amazing moments over the years that I would have completely missed out on, had I taken time to break out all my professional gear. It’s a real time-saver and a great way to record the world around me.

Q. Are there any specific types of pictures or settings you think are better served by a smartphone?

Peter Lik: Having the ability to shoot High Dynamic Range (HDR) from a smartphone camera is amazing! Usually, I need to shoot upwards of 15 frames or more with my pro gear in order to capture panoramic scenes in their entirety. With my smartphone, it is all in a single click. When I am out on the road capturing photos for my gallery walls, I will often use my smartphone to assist in determining the best angles and framing, especially when dealing with difficult terrain that might not be so agreeable to a tripod.

Q. From the perspective of a professional photographer, how advanced do you feel smartphone cameras have become over the past few years.

Peter Lik: It feels like it has been an overnight evolution – jumping from 2MP to 16+MP quality at lightning speed, and it just keeps moving forward! With every upgrade, the smartphone industry has completely captivated the professional world with its ability to produce powerful processing technology. Innovation is accelerating many areas of smartphone camera technology that traditionally fell short of the mark. Capturing great shots in low light environments, for example, has advanced by leaps and bounds. I would not be surprised if, in the near future, you find a shot in my galleries captured on a smartphone!

Q. What features do you think smartphone cameras currently excel at?

Peter Lik: They are completely user friendly. Anybody can just pick one up and start shooting right away. Smartphone cameras are also packed full of useful user settings that can really help amateur photographers capture shots that can be quite complicated with more advanced cameras and lenses. Macro shots or panoramic shots? Want to take a great wide-angle shot or a selfie? There’s usually a dedicated setting for that. Don’t be fooled, though. If it were that easy to get professional shots, I would probably be doing something else for a living. It is mind-blowing that at any given time over 1.8 billion photos are being uploaded and shared. Everyone is so connected and there are seemingly no boundaries. Smartphones are changing how the world sees itself. So powerful!

Q. Where do smartphone cameras still fall short, compared with dedicated point-and-shoot models?

Peter Lik: They are catching up, for sure. But, point-and-shoot cameras are built to be one thing only: a camera. This still gives them an edge (for now). Professional cameras have larger sensors, digital and optical zoom features, and the lenses are larger and typically better than the ones found on today’s smartphones. Low light photography is still a huge challenge for most smartphones. They struggle to take good photos in low light conditions because their cameras feature smaller sensors, packing a high number of pixels into a tiny area. DSLR cameras – with their massive sensors – are still the best choice if you really want high-quality photos day and night. Smartphones are getting better, however, and through a combination of hardware and software engineering are no longer restricted by lighting conditions.

Q. Are there any challenges that you have shooting with a DSLR that have been solved by smartphone cameras?

Peter Lik: Autofocus can be a massive advantage. It gives you the ability to automatically and accurately focus on a subject, especially subjects in motion like animals or kids. When I’m shooting something moving, like a waterfall or a tree blowing in the wind, a camera with a fast autofocus can make all the difference. It certainly improves on fixed-focus cameras, allowing for better zoom shots and closer macro shots. It can be perfect when something unexpected happens and you want to capture a shot quickly before the moment is gone. Smartphones are also incredibly easy to use, and extremely portable. As I mentioned earlier, mine is with me 24 hours a day. It is the camera I use most to capture my everyday moments. To put it in perspective, my camera bag weighs over 30 pounds and my tripod is another eight pounds. Try carrying that all day every day!

Q. What additional camera features would you like to see introduced into smartphones?

Peter Lik: A high quality zoom function, for starters – one that doesn’t lose image integrity as you pull in for a close shot. Features like brighter lenses and superfast autofocus speeds for phase detection are important, too. Also, for me, bigger is better. I’d like to see bigger sensors for low light capture, along with a larger drive capacity. Plus, the ability to shoot in RAW format would definitely be a feature aimed at professional photographers, offering ultimate control during the post-production phase.

Q. What are the current obstacles you feel smartphone cameras need to overcome to be able to compete with more advanced cameras?

Peter Lik: Right now, it’s all about size and lens quality. These are important for super bright and clear photos, great pictures in low light settings and better autofocus speed for faster image capture. When you are asking one device to do so many things, there is usually a compromise somewhere in there. However, looking at how far things have come in the last nine years, I only feel excitement about where the technology is headed.

Playing today’s mobile games can give you the same feeling as if you were playing PC or console games. This is thanks to the rapid growth of mobile device capabilities, allowing gamers to enjoy high-quality games, which were once unimaginable, right in the palms of their hands.

Nevertheless, mobile games do have their own disadvantages. High-quality graphics games tend to drain smartphone batteries fast and very often generate heat. At the same time, if a mobile device is not equipped with the latest HW specifications, gamers may be experiencing a poor gaming experience due to, for example, lagging.

Samsung has developed an application, which can address these problems, and it is currently receiving a good deal of attention. The application is called Game Tuner and just like the name suggests, it is an application that helps users adjust their gaming environment according to their smartphone capabilities and battery performance.

4 Modes for Managing Battery Consumption

The main objective of the Game Tuner is to help users playing games in an optimal environment by controlling specific elements that influence the gaming environment, such as screen resolution and frame rate. Game Tuner offers four preset modes: High, Medium, Low and Extreme Low, allowing the gamers to control their gaming experiences, along with the option of saving power. Games that once were not as enjoyable as they could be because of slow speeds or high battery consumption can now be played in a more pleasant environment thanks to these simple modes.

Samsung conducted an independent survey and confirmed that there was a big savings on battery consumption when Game Tuner was used to control the screen resolution and frame rate. A high-quality graphics game that consumes a lot of power can be enjoyed for a longer period of time and in a more pleasant environment by using Game Tuner.

Custom Mode Raises Enjoyment Levels Even More

For advanced game users wanting to be more in control on how to set the modes, Game Tuner also offers a Custom Mode, which allows them to customize individual settings, screen resolution and frame rate. Additionally, those settings can be specified for each game, so that each game can be played more efficiently.

Here are a couple of tips when using Custom Mode. First, it is best to optimize the screen resolution to fit the game. For instance, in case of WQHD resolution devices (2560×1440), if a game was developed with HD resolution (1280×720) in mind, then the phone’s resolution should be set to Low. For a game with FHD resolution (1920×1080), then Medium is more adequate. Even if the resolution is set higher, the user will not experience much difference. The resolution can be adjusted according to power consumption and the game environment.

A few rules also apply when adjusting frame rate. In general, human eyes perceive screen movement of more than 30 frames per second to be “smooth.” For this reason, when enjoying simple games, such as puzzles or card games, it is recommended that the frame rate to be set at 30 frames per second. For games that emphasize impressive and detailed movements, like action games or fighting competitions, it is better to increase the frame rate.

Providing the Optimal Game Environment for Users

The development of the Game Tuner app began about two years ago. As the number of mobile game users increased and a wide range of games were launched, Samsung Electronics continued to study and research optimization for mobile devices. The Game Tuner app is the outcome of those efforts by Samsung Electronics to improve the experience for mobile game users. The ultimate goal of Game Tuner app is to enable mobile game users to create an optimal environment for the games they play.

With traffic to the Game Tuner server greatly increasing these days, the application is enjoying great popularity, just a month after its launch. The Game Tuner application can be used on Samsung devices such as the Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, S5 Prime, Note5, Note 4 and Tab S2. More devices will be added gradually.

Fonts for Mobile Devices

“As a font designer for smart devices, I ‘draw’ text. My main job is to develop new fonts and optimize existing fonts originally designed for print or web pages by paying attention to the appearance of every single letter,” explained JiEun Kim, Senior Designer of UX Innovation, for Samsung’s IT & Mobile Communications Business.

The term “digital font” refers to the design of text used for electronic devices, such as computers and smartphones. As web design expands, the number of fonts also grows. There are many fonts that are language-specific. Considering that Galaxy devices support more than 90 languages, the number of fonts available for Galaxy users is nearly inconceivable. The default font for Galaxy devices is the result of optimizing the standard typeface used by Android OS, ensuring that it is best-suited for each Galaxy device.

Many people like to change the fonts on their personal devices, testing various styles to find their favorite. Typeface is so important, some users pay to download additional options. For others, font design may go unnoticed as devices and trends change, sticking to familiar fonts that feel comfortable. Just like seasonal fashion, new fonts can be applied for a different look; however, as with many things, simply following the trend is not always the best way to go.

“In my opinion, a good font should be clearly legible, even after long hours of reading. But that does not mean there is a universal font that is best for all devices; depending on differences in display resolution, screen size, aspect ratio and even background colors, the same font can look quite different on different devices,” Kim explained.

For example, the thickness of a white font on a black background can appear to be different than a black font on a white background. Additionally, wearable devices have smaller screens than smartphones. Samsung had to reduce the width of each character of every font to better fit smaller displays.

Creating a Masterpiece

The font design team also takes a creative approach, attempting to create new font styles that are interesting and different. Some people may initially feel slightly uncomfortable with change, but over time it becomes more familiar and eventually the change is preferred. Samsung believes it is very important to find the right balance between meeting the needs of people who like familiarity and pursuing fresh ideas that consumers will come to love.

“We continue to examine our fonts in extreme detail, even if it is barely noticeable to the majority of users. Imagine a sculptor working on his future masterpiece, hammering and sanding the surface for years. In a similar manner, we fine-tune our fonts little by little, getting closer to perfection each time,” Kim added.

Before launching a new device, Kim carefully checks how each font will look, depending on the length and arrangement of text and font size.

Unique to Galaxy

Galaxy users can customize the faces of their smartphones with several pre-loaded fonts such as Choco Cooky, Cool Jazz, Gothic Bold, Rosemary and Samsung’s default font. In the configuration settings menu, fonts can be previewed to see how it will look as a title or description, before applying the changes.

“It’s difficult when a font has really unique characters. People can grow tired of the font in a short period of time, if the characters are too strong. The most widely used fonts around the world are popular for hundreds of years, even while they continue to be refined. Keeping this in mind, we try to make sure every font on Galaxy devices looks neutral, solid and dignified.”

The newest font, Samsung Sans, was designed exclusively for Samsung mobile devices including Galaxy smartphones. Kim joined the design team that carefully developed the tilt, lines and curves of every character, over the past year.

“Samsung Sans is our first exclusive font for Samsung mobile devices. We focused on making Samsung Sans embody the identity of Samsung mobile, delivering a soft, natural typeface that is polished, but not over-styled. Because Samsung mobile devices are favored by hundreds of millions of users around the globe, we tried to design a font that would be easy and comfortable to read in any language,” said Kim.

Another noteworthy difference of font design that users may easily recognize is number font, which is the same for users globally. Due to changes in approaches and design concepts of Samsung’s flagship smartphones, number fonts differ slightly by device. Numbers change the appearance of the lock screen, the weather forecasting widget, dual clock widget and alarm.

The Difference of Typeface

When thinking about the newest smart devices, most people focus on the latest technologies and features. Typeface is recognized subconsciously; however, there are those who always consider the way information is displayed, such as font designers like Kim. They understand typography is a language itself, and think about what fonts are best for every message, location or device.

“As a font designer for smart devices, my goal is to design a smart device-specialized font that feels comfortable, is easy to read and is attractive across many languages. Of course, I want to achieve ultimate optimization for various smart devices, too. You may feel that the fonts currently used on smart devices are good enough, but I don’t think they are 100 percent perfect yet. I believe fonts are similar to facial expressions in a way; the slightest hint of distortion can change the whole impression,” Kim emphasized.

The more and more that smart devices can do, the more important it is to make sure your device is functioning at its best. This means preserving the battery life, but also managing storage and RAM and keeping everything safe from security threats.

In the beginning of the year, Samsung introduced the Smart Manager, which helps users scan and optimize their smartphone, all at once. Available since the launch of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, the performance of Smart Manager and the devices that support it has been improving. The Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note5 come preloaded with improved battery usage, including app optimization, and security features.

Opening the Smart Manager app shows its four main components: Battery, Storage, RAM and Security. You can view and optimize your device through closing running apps and uninstalling unnecessary apps. The Security menu scans your phone for malware and other security threats. My Knox is also available to download for even more security. To boost your device’s speed and performance in a single click, use “Clean All.”

Long Live Your Battery

Smartphone users don’t always realize they can remove apps which are infrequently or never used. Sometimes apps are running in the background, consuming battery power. After selecting Battery within the Smart Manager, users can prevent wasting battery power through “App Optimization.”

For each app, users can choose between “Always Optimizing,” “Automatically Optimizing” or “Disable For.” “Always Optimizing” stops the app from using battery power. You can also select how often the apps will be optimized (every 3, 5 or 7 days). If you choose the “Automatically Optimizing” for every 3 days, the app will stop using battery power from the last usage for three days. Once the app is set for “Disable For,” you will stop receiving alerts from the app. If you don’t want to miss notifications from instant messaging apps, it’s best not to select “Disable For.”

The Battery screen also displays the percentage of remaining battery power and how long it is expected to last. By selecting Battery Usage, you can view the processes that have been running since your last full charge. Power Saving Mode and Ultra Power Saving Mode also display expected length of battery life if you need to conserve battery power. To view battery consumption of each application, select Detail.

Clean Up

To free up storage space from temporarily stored files, Smart Manager automatically scans and deletes any unnecessary data. After opening the Smart Manager app, select Storage. You can see how much of your available storage has been used. The Details button at the top of the screen shows more information about your device’s total space, available space, system memory, used space, cache data and miscellaneous files.

You can also manually delete data stored on your device. Users can check the current storage status by selecting “User Data” within the Storage menu. This displays how much space each type of files is using. If you choose the applications, you can find which apps are used more frequently. Viewing by frequency of use makes it easy to disable or uninstall unnecessary applications.

RAM is where temporary files are stored when your device runs an application. Clearing the RAM on your device will improve your device’s performance, freeing space so your device can run faster.

The RAM screen displays the percentage of used RAM, the active applications and how much RAM they are currently using. You can see how many background apps are currently using RAM space, so it helps you choose which applications to close. You can also select “End All”.

Soundcamp, a mobile DAW and MIDI sequencer application, functions as an easy-to-use studio recording system that gives musicians access to an ensemble of built-in virtual instruments, including keyboards and drums, as well as an audio recorder equipped with sound effects. Originally developed by experimental musicians, sampling is the act of taking a portion, or sample, of one sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or a sound recording in a different song or piece. The Sampler function allows for sound sample import, record and playback functions, converting any sound—including the human voice—into a custom instrument.

Along with the addition of the Sampler and Looper features, new third-party apps have been made compatible with Soundcamp for the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note5. Galaxy Note5

Trick: A screen that’s on, even when it’s off

From the moment you eject the S Pen from the Galaxy Note5, you know you’re getting a totally different mobile experience. The S Pen is more versatile and useful than ever, with a truly natural writing feel and an array of fun, smart features, like Action Memo, Smart Select and Screen Write. Air View even lets you preview content without touching the screen, just by hovering the S Pen above the display. But one of the most useful new features on the Galaxy Note5 is the ability to write notes on the screen even when the screen has not been turned on. Screen Off Memo fires up automatically whenever you deploy the S Pen and the screen is off, giving you the ability to write directly on the darkened display and then save your message. Treat: Customize your Air Command

The defining aspect of the Galaxy Note5 is its S Pen, which gives users unprecedented functionality and control over their content. Popping the S Pen out from the phone automatically brings up the Air Command menu, where you can take a memo, select images or write right on the screen. But you can also change up to three of the Air Command slots, choosing the apps that are just right for you. Your favorite web browser, a calculator, navigator or whatever you use the most and want right at your fingertips. It’s a treat that will have you howling at the moon.

Galaxy S6 edge+

Trick: Reduce screen size and one-handed mode

People love the 5.7-inch Super AMOLED screens of the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note5, both of which are bright and big, great for using all sorts of media. But sometimes that much screen space can be too much, which is why they also offer a reduced screen mode. Just tap the Home button three times quickly, and the entire screen shrinks down to a smaller size. You can even choose whether you want that screen to be on the left side or the right side of the phone. It’s a fiendishly useful trick.

Treat: Information stream

Sometimes you need to stay on top of some breaking news or information—the latest headlines, sports scores, or financial information—but you are in a meeting or other event and don’t want to be conspicuous about checking. Fortunately, the Galaxy S6 edge+ has Information stream, which allows you to keep updates along the phone’s signature curved edge, without turning on the main screen. Select different feeds and get instant news, whatever you like, then the edge will light up with your stream, while the main screen stays dark as night.

Gear S2

Trick: Better battery control

The Gear S2 has a powerful battery than can last a couple of days on a single charge (depending on how you use it, of course). But sometimes you can get caught without a charges and with power running low. Which is why the Gear S2 offers a Power saving mode, to help your device last a while longer. Just choose the Settings function and scroll down the Power saving. The Gear S2 will switch to greyscale home screen and disable most special functions. That way, if you use a lot of apps during the day, it won’t come back to haunt you.

Treat: S Health

The Gear S2 is a great looking, stylish wearable, but with health-related apps like S Health, it can also help you take care of yourself. With S Health, the Gear S2 automatically tracks activity—or inactivity. Anytime you’re moving around, the Gear S2 knows it and sends encouraging messages. Or if you are sitting still at your desk for too long, it will suggest maybe it’s time to stand up, stretch your bones and get the blood pumping.

How to Set Up

1. Download the Samsung Gear app from the Galaxy Apps store if you’re using a Samsung device, or from Google Play if you’re using a non-Samsung Android phone.
2. Access the Samsung Gear app on your mobile device.
3. Tap Connect to Gear.

5. Confirm your passkey on the Bluetooth pairing request alert by tapping OK.
6. Agree to all terms and conditions by ticking the boxes and tap Done.

Your Gear S2 is set up and ready to go. Easy, right? You can now receive, access and send messages quickly and conveniently, right from your wrist.

1. From the home screen on your Gear S2, turn the bezel one notch to the left to access notifications.
2. Tap the number of notifications received.
3. Turn the bezel to the right to browse received messages.
4. Tap a message to read it in its entirety, and turn the bezel to scroll.
5. To send a quick reply, tap Reply.

a. To send a pre-set message, turn the bezel to browse and tap to select your preferred message.
b. To reply with a voice note, tap the microphone icon, record your voice note and send.
c. To send an emoji, tap the smile icon and turn the bezel to browse emojis. Tap to select and send.

How to Get a New Look

1. To remove bands from the Gear S2, press the latches where the bands meet the case body and slide down to release.
2. Replace the new bands by sliding upward until they snap into place.
3. Tap and hold the home screen.
4. Turn the bezel to browse watch faces. Tap to select.
5. To customize your preferred watch face (when available), tap Stylize.
6. Navigate customization options using the bezel and by swiping left to change the dial, hands and/or shortcuts. Then, tap OK.

Whether sharing exciting personal events, such as graduation ceremonies or weddings, with loved ones who can’t be present, or advertising a new product to a worldwide audience, the possibilities of live streaming are endless. Furthermore, improvements in streaming technologies and increased Internet speeds have made it even easier to stream live content across a variety of digital platforms.

Such is the case with Samsung’s most recently released smartphones: the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note5. These devices are equipped with Live Broadcast, a feature built directly into the native camera app that allows users to broadcast a live video stream directly to YouTube without additional logins or accounts, other than one’s YouTube account. Users have the option of publishing their broadcast publicly, or directly to their personal contacts via a private link. Considering that both also boast a 5MP front and 16MP rear camera—the latter of which utilizes Video Digital Image Stabilization—steady, smooth footage is guaranteed, no matter who or what is being filming.

So what makes a good live stream? Mostly continuous practice and troubleshooting, like many things in life. But, for starters, these 10 tips can give you a good foundation to build on.

1. Plan ahead and stay organized.

The best way to make your live broadcast a success is by being well organized and planning ahead. Begin your planning by creating an outline of the broadcast segments, as well as a draft of a script, if there is to be dialogue. Also, compile a list of materials, such as equipment and props, which might be used during the filming process.

2. Keep it long.

Unlike web video and blogging content, which is said to be most effective when kept under five minutes, live streams are most successful when they are longer in length. Just remember when planning your content, however, that in order to be engaging, video material should be useful, compelling, informative and entertaining to keep viewers coming back for more.

3. Promote your live stream.

After your live stream is planned, be sure let viewers know at least 48 hours in advance when the broadcast will go live by promoting it across a variety of platforms, such as your social media accounts. Don’t forget to include a link where viewers can access the stream. This can also be done in the “Events” section of your YouTube channel, where you can create a custom post for your subscribers and social media sites. The message will post, including the event link, when the public event goes live.

4. Test frequently.

To ensure that your stream is broadcasted without a hitch, run an end-to-end test to scout out any potential problem areas. Conduct the test on-site with your actual bandwidth and source signal, and check for any firewalls that might block streaming. Watch the test on a variety of end user devices, such as PCs, smartphones and tablets, to determine the quality of the stream and alter if necessary.

5. Lighting is everything.

Fortunately, the cameras of both the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note 5 utilize a wide aperture lens of f1.9 to let in lots of light, which ultimately leads to better photos, specifically low-light images. Nevertheless, if lighting is inadequate, the camera will introduce noise into the video picture, which can be amplified by the video encoding process. Keep your subject well-lit (natural light works best) and double check the lighting in your pre-test.

6. Audio is also key.

Even if your audience is unable to see your feed, they can still gain value by hearing it. This rings true for events such as concerts, presentations or general Q&A sessions. Be sure to film your broadcast in a quiet place with minimal background noise. If this is not possible, and your filming site’s acoustics are not ideal, consider connecting an external microphone to your device.

7. Go live early.

In order to ensure that everything is working as it should be, begin your stream at least 15 minutes before it is scheduled to start. This will also notify viewers that the stream is in fact live.

 8. Welcome new arrivals and returning viewers.

To grow your audience, it’s necessary to engage new readers to create a meaningful connection. Likewise, it doesn’t take a lot of effort to show returning viewers that you recognize them when they view your feed. The action will ultimately help build a sense of community among your followers.

 9. Get interactive.

Unlike television, live Internet broadcasts give the feed host the unique opportunity to both engage and interact with viewers. There are a number of ways to do so, including live question and answer sessions via Twitter, interactive chats and behind-the-scenes tours. Be sure to mention how viewers can connect with you by providing your social media handles both in the feed description and throughout the live event.

 10. Re-stream.

After you have successfully streamed—and impressed your audience with your engaging and entertaining content—you should re-stream your event for viewers who may have missed the first broadcast. Additionally, you should make the recording available as video-on-demand as soon as possible, ideally immediately after the live stream ends, via the same URL as the original stream.

The Opening Ceremony for Samsung collection launches at Samsung and Opening Ceremony retail channels in select countries beginning October 2015.

To illustrate just how simple and convenient these new and improved functions are, here are a few quick tutorials to enable you to unlock all the possibilities of the beautifully curved edge screen. To start, make your way to the edge screen menu in settings.

People Edge: Adding Your Besties

Perhaps nothing in life is more important than the people around us, and People Edge lets you keep those close to you even closer. With this feature, you can add your top five favorites, like your boyfriend, your BFF and your boss, in one easy-to-access, color-coded area.

In addition to being able to more quickly access these contacts, you can set the edge screen to illuminate with different colors when there are notifications about them. Furthermore, People Edge lets you communicate with your friends using emoticons, pokes, images and handwritten messages.

1. Switch On.
2. Tap My people.
3. Choose Add contact, then select the friend you wish to add from contact list.
4. To assign a color to the contact, tap the color dot next to the contact’s name, then choose the preferred color.
5. From the People Edge menu, select OnCircle and switch it On to communicate with your friends using emoticons, pokes, images and handwritten messages.
6. Interact with your favorite people by swiping inwards from the Edge handle. Tap the contact and connect!

Alternatively, you can add a contact straight from the edge screen. Simply swipe, press + and select contact.

Apps Edge: Access Your App Obsession Even More Easily

Everyone has their own go-to app. Maybe you’re a social media fiend. Or, perhaps you can’t live without your podcast radio. Whatever you’re into, Apps Edge lets you put your most frequently used apps in one easily accessible place.

1. Switch On.
2. Select Add application.
3. Select app to be added.
4. Instantly access your favorite apps by swiping inwards from the Edge handle and tap the app you wish to open.

Alternatively, you can add an app directly from the edge screen. Simply swipe, press + and select app.

Edge Lighting: Light Up the Edge

Keep the Galaxy S6 edge+ silent, but know when you receive calls or notifications, even when the phone is turned over by, setting up Edge lighting. Once activated, a light will signal any incoming calls or messages. Also, if People Edge is on, the color of the indicator will correspond with your My people settings.

In addition, you can send preset replies to incoming calls without answering, turning over your phone or even picking it up.

1. Switch On.
2. Tap Quick reply and switch it On to reject an incoming call and send a preset message to the caller by placing your finger on the heart rate sensor and holding it in place for two seconds while the device is turned over.
3. Set your Quick reply message.

Information Stream: Manage the Feeds That Matter to You

The Information stream on the Galaxy S6 edge+ displays feeds related to your interests on the edge screen while the main screen is turned off. There’s a feed for everyone, whether you want the latest news in entertainment, the scores of the big game or are keeping a watchful eye on the stock market. If you’re an information junkie, you can customize the Information stream to display multiple feeds in the order of your preference.

1. Switch On.
2. Select Manage feeds.
3. Choose the feeds you want displayed by checking the box above each, or download other feeds.
4. Tap Reorder to organize your selected feeds.
5. Tap, hold and drag the feeds in the order that you prefer, with the feed to be displayed first on the far left.
6. Go back to the Information stream menu and select Edge screen timeout to select the length of time you would like the Information stream to be displayed.
7. From the Information stream menu, select Weather to change the settings of your weather feed.
8. To view the Information stream, swipe your finger along the edge screen and back in one quick motion while the main screen is turned off. To view other feeds, swipe the edge screen upwards or downwards.

Night Clock: Always On and Easy On the Eyes

If you’re like most people, you use your mobile device as a primary timepiece, or an alarm (or alarms) clock to get you up and at ‘em in the morning. But you also hate the blinding effect looking at a bright screen in the middle of the night tends to cause. Thanks to the Night clock of the Galaxy S6 edge+, however, those days are over, as you can activate it to softly illuminate the time on the edge screen while the main screen is turned off.

1. Switch On.
2. Set the start and end times that you want Night clock to be displayed using the keypad. (The maximum duration for Night clock is 12 hours.)

Edge Screen Position: Customize the Way You Access the Edge

Lefty? Righty? Big hands? Tiny thumbs? It doesn’t matter, as you can set the edge screen to be displayed on either side of the Galaxy S6 edge+ to allow for easy and comfortable use. Likewise, you can set the Edge handle—a tab which essentially acts a shortcut to the edge screen—to your preferred position of the screen.

1. To change the position of the handle on the edge screen, tap the arrow key, then drag the edge screen handle to the location of your choice.
2. Tap Show Edge screen handle on to select on which screens you want the handle to be displayed. (All screens or Home and lock screens only.)
3. From the Edge screen position menu, select Edge screen side and choose Right side or Left side.

More and more people are sharing the photos and videos of their special moments through instant messenger services and social networking channels. As this trend grows in popularity, people increasingly want to be able to control and personalize their contents, create great-looking videos and images that are as diverse and unique as their lives.

The Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note5 both feature the most advanced camera technology available on mobile devices today, able to capture clean, crisp images in any occasion. They also come with Video Digital Image Stabilization (VDIS), which reduces shake from unsteady hands on both the front and rear cameras, for sharp video shot on-the-go. Video Collage: Add Creativity to Your Shots

Just as photo collages became very popular for turning photographs into creative displays that are fun to share, now you can do the same with videos using the new mode Video Collage.

Video Collage has three options, each offering a fun option for preserving your special moments. Collage lets you combine videos side-by-side or in a grid, so viewers can see several films at the same time. Series combines videos together one after another in a sequence. And Slow Motion takes a single film and divides it into segments in a two-by-two grid, so you can watch the action from different points in time; each segment can be slowed down and played at different speeds.

These features are fun, but also easy to learn and require just a few steps:

1. In Camera, go to MODE in the lower left of the screen, then select Video Collage.
2. On the top of your screen, select which type of Video Collage you want to make (it’s the option third from the left, between flash and time).
   1. For Collage, you need to choose how many frames and the arrangement you want in the composition.
   2. For Collage and Series you also need to choose an aspect ratio.
3. Select the recording time (between 3 and 15 seconds for Collage and Series, or between 6 and 15 seconds for Slow Motion).
4. Press the red record button in the bottom center to begin filming
5. If you like the results, press SAVE.

The mode walks you through the steps in a way that is both easy and intuitive, and anyone can pick up the process quickly.

Live Broadcasting

The Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note5 also feature Live Broadcasting, giving you the ability to share your experiences via YouTube. You can share your broadcast with all of your contacts, no matter what device they use, quickly and easily.

With Live Broadcast, you no longer have to upload videos and wait for them to process. Now they can just go out directly, to anyone you choose. You can also schedule your video to go out at a time of your choosing, depending on what you prefer. It’s a powerful new tool that lets you share your ideas, memories and content like never before.

1. In Camera, go to MODE in the lower left of the screen, then select Live Broadcast.
2. Sign in to your YouTube account (you will need a Google+ profile).
3. Select Invite and choose who you want to watch.
4. Start your video and share instantly.

Effects for Rear and Front Camera

Video is not the only function that has gotten significant changes for the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note5. For photographs, too, there are now more modes and effects than ever, ensuring you can capture just the look and feel you want for every occasion.

Effects have gotten a big overhaul. People love filters because they allow them to customize their photos and create a variety of moods and feelings. But the effects people most enjoy when taking photos of the world around them can be different than what they want for taking photos of themselves, which is why Samsung has created all-different effects for the front and rear cameras.

The rear camera has eight all-new options—Pastel, Vivid, Retro, Film, Monogram, Nostalgia, Gold and Delicious. Selecting the front camera brings up eight different filters—Calm, Dawn, Grayscale, Evergreen, Rose, Sweet, Riddle and Everyday—designed to make you and your selfies look stylish and unique.

Whichever effects you choose, you can now control the strength of the effect as well as how much of a Vignette (or pinhole effect) to add.

Taking Selfies with Beauty Effects

Both the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note5 have added more options to their Beauty face mode, now giving people more control over their image and helping them capture just the right look.  Because every person is different, now there are four different settings for creating beautify effects depending on each person’s needs.

To use beauty editing, just turn on the front camera and select Beauty from the top menu. That brings up a menu with four options: Skin Tone, Large Eyes, Slim Face and Shape Correction. All are adjustable on a scale of 1 to 8 (except Shape Correction, which is simply on or off).

Photo Editing Modes

The Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note5 provide various tools for editing photo, such as creating collages, cropping, tone adjustment, changing aspect ratio and applying effects. As always, the focus is on giving you the ability to create and personalize, easily and effectively.

Animate

In addition, there is now a fun new option called Animate, which allows you to string together any photos or other images stored in your phone to create animated shorts. Just follow these steps:

1. Select a photo or image from your Gallery. Select Edit, then choose Animate.
2. Press the + button under the photo, which will take you to your Gallery. Select all the additional images you want to animate, then press DONE.
3. The photos you have selected are now in a row. You can change the order, delete images you do not want to use, or add more images. When you’re satisfied, press DONE.
4. The animated short will play. You can choose Ratio to change the aspect ratio of the film, and Speed for how fast you want the images to move.
5. If you want to make more changes, press EDIT. If you’re all done, press SAVE.

The finished sequence is saved in the Photo Editor album of the Gallery.

If you want to personalize the animated short more, you can always draw on the individual images directly.

Collage

Using Photo Collage (which has been available since the launch of the Galaxy S6), users can create beautiful multi-photo images in one frame. You can select borders, roundness and aspect ratio, as well as edit each individual photo within the collage.

Often we’re more interested with what goes on behind the stage than on the stage itself. Indeed, a well-prepared production is a feast for the senses, but more often than not, the backstory or the making of an event equally piques our interests.

Market leaders in the smart technology sector also have their own subplots, the unrevealed stories behind what they make. The form and functions of a device, the trial and error journey to the finished product, those stories strike our curiosity and cause us to fall in love with the product all the more.

At last, the Galaxy Note5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ are here. For now, many are still digesting the initial specifications and innovations of the much anticipated devices. But once this period of preliminary intrigue has subsided, more specific inquiries arise. The early adopters start to become accustomed to their devices but what experiences do they have? What stories can they tell? With new galaxies of possibilities now at our fingertips, we sat down with the designers of the Galaxy Note5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ to hear their first-hand experiences.

Q: Thank you for meeting us. First, could you give us a brief overview of the new Galaxy Note5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+; how they were developed and how that progressed? The biggest change I see is the size. They have a 5.7-inch display screen with a bezel that is noticeably thinner.

A: Tablet-size devices (smart devices with 5-inch or larger screens) are a global trend. To appeal to this need, as well as adhere to the unique visual language of the entire Galaxy line was of utmost importance to us. Our visual theme for 2015 is a future-forward minimalist look and feel based on perfecting the relationship between design and technology, in short Minimal Futurism. Having said that, it was equally important to have each device stand out on its own, in line with this design approach. Both products retain a strong fluid contour from the curved glass to the body, and as you mentioned, we streamlined the device for a sleeker, more compact feel.

Q: Although the screen size is the same, both of these devices have their own unique feel. Could you tell us more about these two products?

A: The approach for both devices was to maintain the overall visual language, but to build on that foundation. The wider curved glass of the Galaxy S6 edge+ allows a more immersive, digital interactive experience. For those who use their devices for entertainment or multi-media will quickly warm to this new feature. The Galaxy Note5 however, takes on a more formal look. The curvature of the display continues on to the reverse side for a better grip, while the S-Pen is now metal to complement the device itself. Also, as soon as you pop out the S-Pen, you’ll immediately see it’s been totally re-designed to assist you in all your creative activities.

Q: The bezel on both devices are noticeably thinner, almost as if the frame has disappeared.

A: A thinner device is fast becoming the norm. The Galaxy S6 edge+ especially has curved glass that seemingly overlaps its surroundings. The original form is the same as the Galaxy S6, but now it has a slightly thinner top and bottom finish to make it look even slimmer than it already is.

Q: Black Sapphire, White Pearl, Gold Platinum, and now Silver Titanium have been added to the range of available colors. After actually seeing them, the colors are much deeper and richer than originally anticipated.

A: Yes, we’re excited about the range of colors with this lineup.  Like the previous colors, this selection also has slight variations in hue and saturation according to how the light hits it. Giving it this richer look will appeal to urban city dwellers constantly interacting with their devices.

Q: The metal and glass combination was quite natural. It’s nice to see that look has been carried over to these new models as well.

A: When you handle the device, you feel the density of the lines and curves that join the glass and metal into a seamless whole. The device itself feels well-constructed and well-crafted. That’s the feeling we wanted to convey, a reliable device, exquisitely designed.

Q: Beyond the exterior, what other things should we know about the newest models?

A: There have been big and small changes to the user experience. Detailed changes have been made to elements of the screen. This is because the increased size meant that things needed to be organized and spaced differently. We’ve also adjusted the keyboards and loading bars, among other things. As minute as this may sound, we underwent many revisions on a millimeter scale moving elements around ever so slightly so that they are positioned perfectly for users. We’re confident that although you may not notice these changes at first, once you start getting accustomed to the new model, you’ll notice the difference.

Q: The biggest changes I can see are the icons. The icons seem to all have a shape that is between a circle and a square. Is there a reason for that?

A: Yes, we call them squarcles! Obviously a word combining circle and square, this unique shape for the container of each icon is unique to Samsung devices and maximizes the touch zone without increasing in size. It’s an intuitive yet innovative way to convey consistency in our user design.

Q: This was introduced at the launch of the new models, the S-Pen has a new innovation. You can use it to write down things even though the screen is off.

A: That’s the screen off memo feature, without turning on the screen you can use the S-Pen to write down quick ideas or thoughts. For this, we needed a smooth interactive function that would notify the user that the screen off memo feature was activated when detracting the pen from the holder. That’s because frankly, it’s not common to write or sketch on a blank dark screen without any indication of what you’re doing. A tiny ink “plop” will appear when you detach the pen signifying that the function has been activated, while other basic function icons will appear, only muted. Once you’ve finished and have saved the memo, the writing itself will shrink away leaving you with a blank screen.

Q: As cute as that seems, it’s an ingenious way of solving a difficult issue with visual interaction.

A: To get to this small interaction took us numerous other ideas and actions. This is a prime example of all the many visual interactions and well as iterations we went through to get to the device you hold in your hands.

Q: I’m curious to know how you maintained consistency among all those different kinds of visual interactions.

Like the screen off memo function, the overall concept was for the interactions to be fluid. Another example of this is the change in the Air Command interface; from a geometric, almost rigid feel to a rippling effect as the various icons plop out onto the screen.

With the Galaxy S6 edge+ visual interaction, you can share content and musings with close friends. The camera and emoticons in particular have a fluid responsiveness. Inertia, elasticity and flow are all natural movements we see that should look and feel natural when emulated on the screen. The actions themselves are calculated mathematically and applied to complex physics models, but for the users it’s a natural reaction that is accepted immediately.

Q: Anticipation is growing with each new launch of the Galaxy series. I guess you could say that excitement stems from the globally recognized quality of the devices and innovations. Now, with the Galaxy Note5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ newly released, what could we expect next from the Galaxy series?

A: It was mentioned briefly when we were discussing visual interaction, but the design philosophy of Samsung Electronics is meaningful, human-centered design. The curved glass of the Galaxy S6 edge+ delivers a unique and limitless form of entertainment while the S-Pen of the Galaxy Note5 offers a highly specialized, yet creative workflow. All of our innovations start from the experience of our customers, satisfying the values and goals they deem most important. That is, as it’s always been, the direction forward for the Galaxy series of innovations. Ultimately, it’s not how high-tech it is, but how close it is to us and our everyday lives.

The newly announced Samsung flagship devices, the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note5, were engineered to be as power-efficient as they are beautifully designed. Each has a 5.7-inch screen optimized to display an even more advanced multimedia UX and productivity capabilities. To enjoy these devices to the fullest, each are equipped with better batteries with faster charging speeds.

Each device houses a 3,000mAh battery, more than ten percent larger compared to the Galaxy S6 (2,550mAh) and the Galaxy S6 edge (2,600mAh). In addition, both products have faster wired and wireless battery charging compared to the Galaxy S6. Thanks to this new technology, both products feature the simplest and most convenient battery charging experience, allowing user to enjoy multimedia or complete multiple tasks, longer.

Building upon the fast wired-charging of the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge, Samsung improved the efficiency even more. Samsung created AFC (Adaptive Fast Charging), which speeds up wired charging and lets the battery charger communicate with the smartphone. If the charger finds a device compatible with AFC, it will start recharging the phone’s battery using higher voltage.

Not only is the charger discharging more power at a faster speed, the device battery receives the power properly and stores it cell by cell, to further accelerate the battery charging.

Thanks to AFC, the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note5 take only about 90 minutes to reach full charge. This indicates even greater efficiency in charging compared to the Galaxy S6 edge, which takes about 85 minutes to fully charge a smaller battery.

Wireless charging also offers significant improvements in speed. While the Galaxy S6 edge required 180 minutes to fully charge wirelessly, the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note5 need only 120 minutes (one hour less) using Samsung’s new wireless charging pad.

Both products have built-in wireless technology, just as the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge do, freeing users from the need to purchase separate wireless charging battery covers or individual connectors. Additionally, they allow you to enjoy the experience of wireless charging without worrying about compatibility. They support both WPC (Wireless Power Consortium) and PMA (Power Matters Alliance) certified standards, the two most widely used wireless power standards around the world.

Samsung is the first to make devices compatible with both WPC and PMA charging pads. The innovative advances made it possible in the two latest large-screen products, even with a thinner body.

Built-in wireless charging in thin devices became possible only through Samsung’s relentless efforts to continue pushing the boundaries of technology. Bringing together two of culture’s most dynamic forces, fashion and technology, Samsung created its newest editorial Lookbook campaign for the anticipated release of its latest Galaxy devices. The Lookbook for the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note5 builds on the theme from the MWC 2015 Unpacked Event in Barcelona, “Next Is Now,” expanding the message with captions like “Next Is Free,” “Next Is Proud” and “Next Is Wild.”

The project was led by Creative Director Stephen Gan and shot by photographer Steven Klein. The bold, colorful and even playful campaign features international models Bella Hadid and Xiao Wen Ju.

“We’re so excited to be here!” said Hadid. “We’re doing a lot of cool things. I haven’t seen many tech companies that create a campaign that’s so fashion forward so I love being a part of it, and bringing fashion and technology together in such a cool way.” She could not stop playing with Galaxy S6 edge+, as she kept checking her makeup throughout the shoot and taking selfies.

When she was done with her makeup, she went through a final check with the Galaxy S6 edge+. The 5.0 megapixel front-facing camera makes the smartphone a perfect companion for a model, as she can clearly see her face even in the dark studio.

Ju was equally excited about being part of a campaign that combined fashion and technology so seamlessly. “It’s more fun, like more creative,” she said. “I can be an artist, I feel. I feel the energy. I feel happy. I feel excited. I know Samsung has a really long history with the fashion industry. When these two things get together, it makes more magic and more sparkling.” For the “Joyful” shoot, she wore a hot pink blouse that matched her expressive body language and helped convey her feelings, and played with the camera as if talking to her best friend.

The behind-the-scenes clip shows Ju using the S Pen to draw on the bright, vivid display of her Galaxy Note5. She is also shown taking selfies using the auto-tracking focus. Her gold platinum Galaxy Note5 catches and reflects light beautifully, as she twirls in circles to capture a fast-action, 360 degree front-camera video.

Nail artist, Ciao Manhattan took advantage of the Galaxy Note5’s large display and the easy-to-use S Pen to create and draw her nail designs for the shoot. “I loved working with Samsung on their Fall 2015 Lookbook,” said Manhattan. “Such a cool and exciting project because I was able to draw creative inspiration both from the design of Samsung’s Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note 5. The range of dynamic emotions both Bella and Xiao portrayed during the shoot directed by Steven and Stephen was so cool. After all, your nails should always be as chic as your smartphone. And check out the S Pen; it’s super chic and allowed me to sketch my nail art designs before bringing them to life.”

Want a more tactile means of communication? Poking might be right up your street. There are three different types of poke on People edge: knocking, twinkling, and petals fluttering. Knocking is delivered to the receiver as a haptic and ripple effect, which can be used as a short, secret signal between users. For example, the sender and receiver could agree in advance that three knocks means “coffee break.” Twinkling and petal fluttering will show on the recipient’s device like a drawing by hand.

The Write Choice

After you’re done, you can annotate the captured image and then save or share it.

The S Pen also makes it possible to annotate PDFs, so when you’re out of office and need to review a file, you can make notes using the S Pen on your Galaxy Note5.

Samsung has also made it easier to take quick notes with the Galaxy Note5. There’s no need to unlock your device, because it can be a regular memo pad even when the screen is off. Take out the S Pen, and you can immediately start to write on your phone; the screen will still be black, but your writing will show in white.

“Based on our extensive lab tests and measurements… the Galaxy Note5 is the best performing smartphone display that we have ever tested,” wrote DisplayMate, which is famous for its thorough and scientific evaluations of video screens. “It takes over from the Galaxy Note4, which was the previous record holder for mobile display performance.”

The 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED screen of the Galaxy Note5 scored record-setting results in color accuracy, peak brightness, contrast rating, resolution, smallest brightness variation with viewing angle and many other categories. In fact, the Galaxy Note5 boasted “the best absolute color accuracy of any mobile display that we have ever tested,” and “a measured Absolute Color Accuracy of 1.4 JNCD, which is visually indistinguishable from perfect, and is very likely considerably better than your living room TV.”

Thanks to that amazing performance, an incredible 518 pixels per inch, and a “significantly” improved Adaptive Display setting, the DisplayMate review noted that the display was better than ever for readability and visibility in high ambient light, meaning people can enjoy their phones in real-world conditions, even in the bright light of day. Adaptive Display adjusts the screen’s white point, color gamut and color saturation depending on the ambient lighting around the user, creating more vibrant colors and making the screen more readable.

With a peak brightness of 861 nits, the Super AMOLED screen is stunningly bright—the best DisplayMate says it has ever tested on a mobile device—but the Galaxy Note5 also has the ability to be incredibly dark. Its “Super Dimming Mode” allows users to turn the maximum screen brightness all the way down to just 2 nits using the Brightness Slider, making it ideal for working without eye strain in very dark environments. Even when dimmed all the way down, the display still offers full 24-bit color with excellent picture quality.

And to top it all off, the Galaxy Note5 does all that while using less power than the Galaxy Note4—DisplayMate measured a 21 percent improvement in efficiency—so users can get even longer life from each charge.

The Galaxy S6 edge+ also earned high praise, for a screen that was nearly identical to the Galaxy Note5, with the addition of dual curved edges. Samsung has continued to enhance the technology behind the flexible edges, which was described as “essentially the same” quality as the main display. The review noted the usefulness and “fun” of the curved display, offering a range of applications through the new “App edge” like weather, notifications and news feeds that can be enjoyed with a simple swipe of the finger. And because the edges can be used independently of the main display, users can turn off the main display and just use the edges to save on power and “significantly extend” their battery life.

“The most important point is that curved and flexible displays are definitely the wave of the future,” raved DisplayMate.

The Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note5 were both unveiled at the Unpacked event last week and will be available around the world soon.

While the combination of VDIS and OIS improves the quality of your recordings, the Video Clip mode in the native camera app allows you to add some creative flair. You now have a wide variety of options to soup up your videos: Collage, Slow Motion and Series. And the best thing is, these features works straight out of the box; you don’t need to install any other apps.

With the Collage mode, you can combine two to four different videos into one video clip, depending on the layout you choose. The Slow Motion mode with the rear camera will automatically produce one video and three slow video clips at different speeds. The Series mode lets you combine multiple short clips into one video without a complex editing process.

The native camera app in the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note5 also has the Live Broadcast mode. Sharing video is always at its best when friends and family can enjoy the experience in real time. This special mode is a quick and easy way of making that happen. When you choose Live Broadcast mode, you can invite people to watch from your contacts. Anyone you invite can watch your broadcast on their own devices (mobile, PC, or TV) via YouTube. However, if you want, you can go public and share the broadcast through e-mail or social networks.

Picture Perfect

6. True Privacy

Other devices allow you to hide your private photos, but they remain visible in the list of albums. Private Mode is available on many Samsung devices, including the Galaxy S6. Louis Vuitton recently celebrated the opening of its private museum, La Galerie, located its historical venue at Asnières-sur-Seine. Inaugurated in 1859, Louis Vuitton Asnières has been the heart and soul of the French house: the Family House continues to receive guests upon invitation, while the neighboring workshops continue to fabricate high-end leather goods and trunks as of today. The new “La Galerie”, available for visits upon reservation only, will add excitement and will allow visitors to better understand the past, present and future of Louis Vuitton. This private museum carries a specially designed application for the Galaxy S6 edge, created to serve as a digital docent.

Powered by smart sensors, the app allows the smartphone to communicate with the exhibitions using beacon, NFC and camera image detection, triggering historical images to be displayed on-screen at certain points of interest. The Galaxy S6 edge helps to dynamically link the past to the present, making the museum tour truly exceptional.

The two-story museum has eight sections on each floor. Visitors can open the app on the Galaxy S6 edge and select one of the sections before looking around.

In the Culture of Design section, NFC has been installed. Placing the Galaxy S6 edge on the spot marked ‘Pateki’ instantly displays show window images designed by Louis Vuitton on the screen.

In the Possibility of Adventure section, users can use the app for an interactive experience. After choosing the Possibility of Adventure on the app menu, users place their smartphone in front of an early travel-themed advertisement. Doing so will display a current ad with the same concept. On the second floor, visitors can view couture outfits of early days and the collection of Gaston-Louis Vuitton. By capturing pieces from the collection with the app, visitors can watch interviews of Gaston-Louis Vuitton.

The digital docent presents various images on the screen throughout the tour that help to create a link between the past and present. This unusual and remarkable approach will surely allow visitors to have a more in-depth understanding of the exhibition.

This digital docent is more than just an explainer. It presents unforgettable memories to its users. At the Personal Initials section, visitors can input their initials to make a Monogram, which can then be sent by email. In addition, it helps visitors to never lose their way because of the installed Beacon, which provides the user’s current location information at La Galerie in real-time.

Louis Vuitton, in order to celebrate this collaborative project, created smartphone cases exclusively for the Galaxy S6 edge patterned with its iconic Monogram and Damier designs.

The digital docent available for the Galaxy S6 edge has taken the museum experience to a whole new level, demonstrating that advanced technologies and artist works can generate a huge synergy effect. Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus: The First Smartphones With Curved Displays
The Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus, the first smartphones with curved displays, were released in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Both feature a gentle curve on the front sides of the phones. The design not only improves appearance of the devices, but it also enhances grip, making talking on the phone more comfortable. The curved screens also make the devices less vulnerable to damage if dropped.

Galaxy Round: Vertical Curve

Released in 2013, the Galaxy Round was curved vertically. Because it resembles giwa (or traditional Korean roof tiles), it earned the nickname “Galaxy Giwa.” The curved glass of the 5.7-inch screen of the Galaxy Round has a soft curve which, with 400R and Sag 2.55mm specifications, improves grip. Additionally, when shaking the device while the screen is locked, an image of water flows across the screen, an impressive and visually appealing feature.

Galaxy Note Edge: Brand New UX
Samsung continued to release more products incorporating the use of curved glass, and as such, its technology consistently advanced. This was evident in October 2014, when the company released the Galaxy Note Edge, which featured the thinnest curved screen yet. It was the first product to introduce “Variable R” curved glass, meaning instead of having a single curve rate like its predecessors, there were multiple curvatures contained in the single 0.55t glass screen. The curved glass of the Galaxy Note Edge was available in 6.3R (minimum value) and Sag 5.56mm, demonstrating the considerable improvement of Samsung’s curved glass technology and would be the foundation for the creation of the dual edge screen of the Galaxy S6 edge.

Galaxy S6 edge: The Pinnacle of 3D Glass Technology
The unprecedented dual edge display of the Galaxy S6 edge is the most advanced 3D glass technology that exists today, and required extensive research and experiments by the device’s development staff. Though thinner with a 0.4t body, this seemingly indestructible device is stronger than any previous curved screen, with a higher curve rate than all other existing smart devices. Designed for both beauty and function, the Galaxy S6 edge pushes the boundaries of curved glass technology.

Gear Fit and Gear S: Curved for Better Fit
Samsung released its Gear Fit in April 2014, the company’s first attempt at introducing its distinctive design in wearable devices. Its contoured face and innovative design with a narrow 1.84 inch screen in 57.45R and Sag 8.0mm distinguished the Gear Fit from other wearables, making it both stylish and comfortable to wear. In November, Samsung released the Gear S, a wider version of the previous model. The wider 2-inch screen in 45.88R and Sag 8.0mmn allowed for greater usability, and impressed users with the preloaded S Health, a mobile application that tracks the progress and health status of the consumer.

Understanding Curved Glass: 2D, 2.5D, 3D

2D glass is flat on both sides. It can be found on the two oldest models of the Galaxy S and in most smartphones. It was followed by 2.5D glass, which was the beginning of curved displays. 2.5D glass has a convex or concave surface on only one side; the other side is flat. Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus are both examples of devices that use 2.5D glass. 3D glass is different because neither side is flat; as such, the technology for bending this glass required sophisticated engineering. To produce 3D glass, advanced thermoforming technology is applied to glass that must be as thin as it is strong. Samsung continues to improve its thermoforming technology by consistently creating new products.

The two measurements of curved glass are R value and Sag value. The R value represents the radius from any point. A single R is a perfect circle with a non-variable radius. A variable R is an ellipse and has a different value dependent on the point of measure. The technology to create a variable R is more advanced and Samsung introduced this technology with the Galaxy Note Edge.

The second value is the Sag rate. This measures the height from the top to bottom of a curve. The deeper the curve of any display, the more advanced the technology behind it.

While consumers all the world over have grown to favor smartphones with curved screens for the glass’ strength and stylish design, curved technology is not only limited to mobile devices. In fact, this very technology has created an entirely unique media viewing experience both at home and at the office.

Curved TVs: Gentle Viewing Immersion
Released last year, the curved TV has become known for its immersive properties. Its beautiful soft curve of 4200R minimizes the viewing distance from the center of the screen to the peripheral areas, reducing the need to repeatedly adjust focus. This feature exclusive to curved televisions results in less eye strain, particularly during action scenes.

Curved Monitors: Easier on the Eyes
Earlier this year, Samsung released a number of computer monitors with curved screens that, like curved TVs, lack display distortion and are much easier on the eyes than traditional monitors. While the monitors smaller than the 29 inch model have a 4000R curve, the 29 inch model and bigger varieties measure in at 3000R. Being the first company to introduce models with these specifications using its own technology is a remarkable achievement on Samsung’s part.

Curved glass is beautiful and complex. As curved technology evolves, the possibilities of design also grow. Samsung developers continue to think of ways to use these new technologies to make life easier and more aesthetically pleasing for everyone.

In today’s modern lifestyle, people are busier than ever and they demand more from their smartphones so they can keep up with the frenetic pace of life. Naturally, people want to multi-task to be more productive and use their time more efficiently.

On the long list of intuitive and practical features offered by Galaxy devices, the Multi Window capability is perhaps one of the most under-appreciated. The Multi Window feature has been available on Galaxy devices since the Galaxy Note 2, released in late 2012, however users of the Galaxy S3, also released in 2012, were able to watch videos without interruption through Pop-up Play. And since then, the multi-tasking capabilities have only improved with each edition, and they have become a mainstay on Galaxy S, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab devices that followed.

It certainly comes in handy in lots of different situations, like using a map app while exchanging texts when making arrangements to meet a friend. Or, to keep an eye on sports scores while watching a video, or to browse the Internet to find information while also writing an email. With the Galaxy Note 4, you can easily take notes using the S Pen during a video chat by splitting the screen.

With the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, you can quickly and easily open two apps at the same time. From any screen, simply touch and hold the Recent Apps button (just to the left of the home button). Apps that support Multi Window will be displayed.

Simply select the two you want to use and they will appear in split view, one on top, one on the bottom. You can also launch recently used apps directly into the multi window view. Apps that can be used with multi window will have the multi window icon on the title bar.

The window controls, which appear between the two windows, allow you to adjust the size of each window, minimize or maximize a window, drag and drop content from one window to another, or switch the location of the windows. When you minimize an app, it turns into a circular, movable icon that can be opened by tapping on it. It’s extremely easy and intuitive.

There’s also pop-up view. Simply open an app and then swipe diagonally from either top corner of the screen and the app will appear as a pop-up, which you can move around the home screen. So when you are multitasking but you need to focus on one app, you can keep another app just one touch away.

Tap the button to see the control options or hold and drag to create a pop-up window.

On the Galaxy Tab S, touch the recent apps button and swipe upwards or downwards and tap the Multi Window icon on the recent app window. The selected app will launch in the upper window. You can also launch the split screen by tapping and holding the recent apps button. Much like with the Galaxy S6, you can find additional options by tapping the circle between the app windows. If you are the proud owner of a Galaxy Note Pro or Galaxy Tab Pro device, it is possible to have four windows open simultaneously.

Also, Samsung’s SideSync 3.0 app is a PC-Mobile solution that enables screens, windows and data to be shared between PCs and Galaxy smartphones, or between Galaxy Tabs and Galaxy smartphones. The app allows you to connect to your smartphone and launch the phone as a window on the screen of your Galaxy Tab or PC, which can be adjusted for size. There are a whole host of sharing functions, including keyboard and mouse sharing mode, file and clipboard sharing and lots more.

Finally, with the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge and Galaxy Note 4, if you happen to be using an app, watching a video or playing a game when a call is received, a pop up window appears on the screen. With the pop up window, you can choose to answer, reject or tap expand to view the main call screen. After answering the call, you can exit the call screen during an active call to do something else, like access your contacts list, view an email or locate a picture. To return to the call screen, simply got to the notification panel and tap the call notification. You can also click end call from the notification panel.

To showcase the durability of this new technology, Corning started a campaign that is taking travel bloggers to some of the toughest locations in the world to put it to the test.

Gorilla Glass 4 can be used at a thinness of 0.4mm, or about the thickness of four sheets of 20-pound paper. It can survive drops from 1m up to 80% of the time. During testing, Corning dropped its Gorilla Glass 4 devices a combined total of about 26km. That’s two times higher than commercial airplanes fly. Gorilla Glass 4 is up to two times better than competitive glass designs in devices dropped from 1m in laboratory tests. So to show just how tough Gorilla Glass 4 is, Corning’s campaign let well-known bloggers document their tough travel experiences with the Samsung Galaxy S6. Called Tough Drops Hidden in Plain Sight, the campaign shows the group of travelers putting their devices to the test.

Corning’s first stop with its blogger team (aptly named the Gorilla 4, as each destination includes three bloggers, plus famed travel photographer JD Andrews), was Oregon in the United States. Corning chose some of the world’s most unique locations, such as Mount St. Helens, Columbia River Gorge, Painted Hills, Smith Rock, Yaquina Head Lighthouse and Cape Disappointment.

In particular, the Gorilla 4 team, which included bloggers Teri Johnson, Mariellen Ward, Beth Santos, and Andrews, hiked up Mount St. Helens, which had the deadliest volcanic eruption in U.S. history nearly 35 years ago. Here, they witnessed the devastation and re-birth of a volcanic wasteland. All Samsung Galaxy S6 devices with Gorilla Glass 4 made it back without a scratch.

“Using a smartphone on my travels is how I share my adventure,” Andrews said. “When I see something or someone interesting, I don’t have to get into my camera bag, turn on the camera, take the lens cap off, make sure the settings are correct, etc. I now can just grab my smartphone and capture that moment right away without missing that incredible opportunity.” After using the camera on the Samsung Galaxy S6 he commented, “I really like the Galaxy S6 feature when you say “Cheese”, “Capture”, “Smile” or “Shoot” it takes a photo. That really helps when you want to get creative or are unable to use both hands.”

One of his favorite photos taken on the trip is one with drops of rain water about to drip off of a leaf. “It’s so clear!” he said. “I loved ‘catching’ that moment in time.”
