Ahead of World Alzheimer’s Day, Samsung Newsroom is highlighting Samsung Research’s ongoing work on the early detection of dementia.

The Importance of Early Diagnosis

Alzheimer’s disease is incurable and irreversible. Once symptoms appear, cognitive function declines steadily — disrupting daily life in profound ways.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), often considered a precursor to dementia, is of particular concern. Clinical tests reveal measurable cognitive decline in those with MCI, yet they remain capable of performing daily activities. According to studies cited by the Alzheimer’s Association, about 12 to 18% of people 60 and older live with MCI, and 10 to 15% of them progress to dementia each year. As a result, early detection and management of MCI has become a growing priority in the medical community.^1,2

Multiple studies show that changes in the brain can begin 10 to 20 years before the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease Dementia.³ Therefore, detecting these early signs is critical. While recent advances in therapies have raised hopes for treatment, early diagnosis combined with ongoing care remains the most effective approach today.

The benefits of early detection include:

• Implementing lifestyle modifications — such as enhancing diet, engaging in exercise and promoting cognitive stimulation — to help delay disease progression.
• Starting drug and non-drug interventions earlier to preserve cognitive abilities
• Gaining access to new therapies including newly approved or trial-stage drugs

Tracking Change Through Digital Biomarker Technology

Smartphones and wearables have become essential in daily life, capturing detailed information about users’ habits and behaviors. Device data captures subtle routine changes with remarkable high sensitivity.

Recognizing this potential, researchers at Samsung Research developed digital biomarker technology that tracks changes in cognitive function by analyzing multimodal data from smartphones and wearables — including app usage, typing speed, messaging patterns, call frequency, sleep and voice.

Researchers proposed that digital biomarkers could measure symptoms of cognitive decline identified in prior studies. By analyzing multimodal smartphone and wearable data, they estimated cognitive states, confirming that digital biomarker algorithms effectively track cognitive changes.

Recalling and repeating short sentences can evaluate short-term memory-related brain regions, while assessing speech fluency and accuracy reveals the state of language ability. Likewise, the regularity and variety of app and messaging use, along with call frequency, can offer insights into social networks and the brain’s executive functions.

In short, the study demonstrated that brain regions responsible for language and short-term memory — typically impaired by Alzheimer’s disease — can be assessed through voice data. The findings also indicate that declines in social and behavioral abilities are associated with patterns of app use, messaging and call frequency.

Detecting Decline With Everyday Data

In July, the Samsung Research team presented studies on smart device–based technologies for detecting cognitive decline at the International Conference of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) in Copenhagen, Denmark.

One study introduced technology that analyzes smartphone keyboard input patterns to detect early signs of cognitive impairment. The research prioritized analyzing nonverbal features like typing speed and correction patterns over examining user input to minimize privacy risks. The language-independent approach demonstrated significant global potential, and the paper ranked within the top 7% of papers presented at the conference.

Another study analyzed data from smartphones and Galaxy Watch sensors to monitor walking patterns — including gait speed, stride length and balance — for early detection of cognitive decline.

Both studies demonstrate performance comparable to hospital-based dementia screening tests by leveraging everyday behavioral data, eliminating the need for additional user input, and showcasing the potential to track cognitive changes through routine data.

Improving Quality of Life Using Technology

Digital biomarker technology is designed to improve the early detection of subtle signs of Alzheimer’s Disease that might otherwise go unnoticed in daily life. Samsung Research plans to continue validating the performance of its digital biomarker models while further advancing the technology.

Although continued collaboration with academia and the medical field is required for further refinement and improved accuracy, advances in early detection of dementia are anticipated to improve personal health, enhance quality of life and alleviate pressure on healthcare systems. Further research with academia and the medical community is needed for validation and enhanced accuracy, but ongoing advancements in this technology are expected to enhance personal health and quality of life while reducing the strain on healthcare systems.

Samsung Electronics and Stanford University today jointly announced a research project with Stanford Medicine to initiate an innovative health solution based on Samsung’s obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) feature¹ which has received De Novo — the first of its kind authorization — by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In recognition of World Health Day, this project underscores the importance of sleep in overall health by taking further steps in proactive care, beginning with a pioneering study.

Led by professor Robson Capasso as principal investigator and professor Clete Kushida as co-principal investigator, the joint study is designed to explore potential ways to further enhance Samsung’s Sleep Apnea feature to better support sleep health through timely interventions. Looking ahead, efforts will focus on going beyond detection by leveraging AI technology for daily monitoring to sleep apnea management, empowering users with the best possible sleep tools to improve their health.

Samsung’s Sleep Apnea feature on the Galaxy Watch,² which detects signs of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, previously received authorization by the US FDA following approval by Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). With its latest approval by Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA), the feature will become available to users in Brazil in late April, increasing availability to 29 markets globally. The Sleep Apnea feature will continue to be expanded to more countries around the world, allowing more people to proactively spot symptoms earlier, which help prevent further long-term OSA health-related complications.

In support of World Mental Health Day, Samsung is highlighting ongoing research programs with Massachusetts General Hospital, MIT Media Lab, Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Tulane University School of Medicine, Heart and Vascular Institute. These studies dive deep into the mind-body connection by examining various health indicators including depression, mood, resilience and even cardiovascular diseases to deliver more comprehensive and preventative health solutions for all.

Enabling Depression Prevention & Detection With Massachusetts General Hospital

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) has been analyzing the correlation between depression and various biomarkers by evaluating the health metrics of 150 participants with different levels of depression using the Galaxy Watch. The study aims to validate the correlations between depression and biometrics — such as participants’ patterns of biometric data, activity level, sleep stage, duration and latency on both weekends and weekdays — to identify more detailed characteristics. The findings will be used to introduce a mental health index, allowing users to better understand their mental state and take proactive measures

Supporting Well-Being Through Better Sleep With MIT Media Lab

MIT Media Lab has expanded the understanding of sleep’s role in well-being by linking sleep patterns to overall health. Approximately 200 college students participated in the study, tracking their sleep over a month and self-evaluating across five well-being indicators every morning — including alertness, happiness, energy, health and calmness. The study found strong associations between sleep and well-being with both sleep duration and sleep regularity directly affecting them. By utilizing a mixed-effect random forest (MERF) model, MIT Media Lab was able to predict the participants’ self-reported well-being based on their sleep patterns with a mean absolute error of 11-15 points on a 100-point scale which closely matched their self-evaluation results. This outcome highlights the link between sleep and well-being as well as the possibility of personalized well-being assessment and management through the analysis of sleep patterns.

Helping Rapid Recovery With Brigham & Women’s Hospital

Brigham & Women’s Hospital (BWH) is studying the relationship between biomarkers and an individual’s resilience, or how quickly one recovers from major stressors. As a holistic measure, resilience captures the capacity of the body and mind to withstand major events such as disease and surgery. For a first use case, they are monitoring patients before, during and after undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) surgery. The Galaxy Watch tracks participants’ lifestyle patterns and health conditions in real time while the data is automatically collected and analyzed using the Samsung Health Research Stack, a system designed to increase the efficiency and accuracy of large-scale research. This study aims to uncover insights into recovery and the ability to withstand stressors — not only to help inform medical decisions but also to help individuals understand how they can be prepared in both mind and body for any challenges that may come.

Identifying Cardiovascular Risks With Tulane University School of Medicine

Mental health has a well-established relationship with reduced risk of future cardiovascular disease. Tulane University School of Medicine is utilizing data from the Galaxy Watch and Samsung Health SDK to create biomarkers for early detection of cardiovascular disease risk factors. The study will closely monitor thousands of participants from diverse demographics and areas of high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and risk factors for up to three years. Each participant’s health records and biometric data will then be analyzed to examine complex and interconnected health factors. Samsung and Tulane’s Heart and Vascular Institute hope to identify factors that impact cardiovascular disease with a goal of developing algorithms for individual cardiovascular disease prediction and prevention.

Samsung Electronics, together with the University of Michigan, today announced that the University of Michigan Human Performance & Sport Science Center (HPSSC) — renowned for its integrated and comprehensive sport, exercise, and human performance-related research and education — has validated the high accuracy of Samsung Galaxy Watch’s fitness tracking features.

HPSSC’s Michigan Performance Research Laboratory (MiPR) found a significant correlation between Galaxy Watch and the clinical and sport science reference devices’ measurement of heart rate, sweat loss, VO₂ max and body fat percentage measurements, validating the reliability of Galaxy Watch’s monitoring capabilities. This partnership demonstrates how the collaboration between the two organizations makes advanced and precise fitness solutions to more people.

The MiPR studies verified the accuracy of Galaxy Watch’s fitness tracking features by monitoring key metrics from elite runners, including:

• Heart rate: As the most commonly checked health metric during workouts, heart rate measures how hard the heart works during physical activity. Findings show an excellent 90% correlation with electrocardiogram equipment while running, the gold standard in heart rate measurement.
• Sweat loss: Sweat loss estimates the amount of fluid lost during physical activity and helps guide proper hydration after workouts. The study found a 95% correlation for Galaxy Watch in assessing sweat loss over varying distances ranging from 2.5 km to 20 km.
• VO₂ max: Understanding how much oxygen the body absorbs during a workout helps individuals assess their fitness levels and set optimal goals and limits. The study demonstrated an 82% correlation, indicating acceptable alignment between Galaxy Watch and clinical-grade diagnostic equipment.
• Body fat percentage: Measuring a person’s body fat percentage allows for a better understanding of physical health and fitness than tracking body weight alone. Galaxy Watch readings showed a 95% correlation with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) results, the standard diagnostic test for body composition using low-dose X-rays.

To develop the Energy Score feature, Samsung Research² collaborated with Professor Patrick O’Connor from the Mary Frances Early College of Education’s Department of Kinesiology at the University of Georgia, USA.

Samsung Newsroom explored the new Energy Score — designed to enhance the digital healthcare experience.

Energy is closely related to everyday efficiency and fatigue, and based on imperfectly understood neural circuit activity in the brain. As a result, objectively quantifying energy is not easy. Samsung Research and Professor O’Connor’s team joined forces to define and calculate an individual’s energy based on the available science.

A leading expert in exercise psychology, Professor O’Connor has extensively studied the effects of sleep, physical activity and caffeine intake on cognition and feelings of energy. He advised on the development of the Energy Score feature on Samsung Health, combining physical activity with neuroscience data and theory to suggest the concept of “Overall Capacity.”

While most existing services focus solely on physical aspects when measuring energy, Overall Capacity considers both physical and cognitive factors. Mental stressors can affect energy levels, as evidenced by disrupted sleep patterns and increased fatigue when stressed.

Essentially, energy reflects the amount of activity one can sustain relative to their total capacity. Exceeding one’s usual physical or mental load reduces energy in the short term. For example, if someone typically exercises at a low intensity for 30 minutes daily — but decides to engage in moderate-intensity exercise for an hour one day — their Energy Score is expected to drop the following day.

Regular exercise can improve Overall Capacity, potentially resulting in a higher Energy Score for the same workout intensity over time.

Energy Score is calculated based on physical activity levels, sleep quality, heart rate during sleep and heart rate variability during sleep as measured by wearable devices. Samsung Research developed the Energy Score feature based on scientific studies and clinical research that studied the correlation between these indicators and cognitive, self-reported and physical markers of energy.

“Activity” can influence physical capacity. One can predict their energy for the day by comparing workout data from the previous day against their typical activity levels. This method employs the Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio concept that anticipates fatigue by assessing both long-term and short-term workload.

“Sleep” is primarily associated with mental capacity. Sleep patterns like average sleep duration over seven days, consistency of sleep and wake times and how quickly one falls asleep are analyzed and integrated into one’s Energy Score. This method follows the “energy reservoir” model — which explores the connections between sleep, fatigue and cognitive function, to calculate fluctuations in energy based on sleep duration and circadian rhythms.

“Sleeping Heart Rate” and “Sleeping Heart Rate Variability” are linked to both physical and mental capacities. Energy is forecast by comparing recent measurements to past long-term data trends. Predictions are more accurate when heart rate during sleep and heart rate variability during sleep data are both analyzed during a stable state of sleep.

Samsung Research took age and gender into account in determining how much weight each factor should have on one’s Energy Score. Furthermore, Professor O’Connor’s research team conducted experiments involving cognitive tests and self-reports of energy and fatigue symptoms, finding a significant correlation between the Energy Score generated by Samsung’s models and clinical data collected by the University of Georgia’s researchers.

Samsung Health’s Energy Score goes beyond simple numerical values. The figure offers health guidance and suggestions based on seven key factors affecting the score including average sleep duration and physical activity from the previous day.

To achieve this, Samsung Research combined its energy score model with optimization AI and generative AI technologies. Optimization AI first pinpoints key influences on the score and analyzes current energy levels along with recent lifestyle changes to suggest potential improvements. On-device generative AI then crafts these insights into friendly messages while upholding user privacy.

The health guidance provided gives users an understanding of their current Energy Score and science-based suggestions to manage appropriate levels of activity and rest for the day. By paying more attention to the factors that affect their daily Energy Score, users can go on to improve their lifestyle habits.

Professor O’Connor conducted extensive research in collaboration with Samsung developers, striving to enhance the reliability and validity of the Energy Score.

“From a scientific perspective, the Energy Score reflects predicted variation in the ability to perform brief cognitive tests of attention across the day based on objective information obtained from smart device sensors during the past week,” he explained.

“Through our collaboration with Professor O’Connor, we were able to address this challenge in a scientifically meaningful way,” said Yunsu Lee, Head of the Data Intelligence Team at Samsung Research. “We will continue to develop data and AI technologies to ensure that Samsung’s various devices are used more widely to enhance users’ lives.”

Samsung Electronics announced that the sleep apnea feature¹ on the Samsung Health Monitor app² has received De Novo authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This feature, which detects signs of sleep apnea using a compatible Samsung Galaxy Watch and phone, was the first of its kind to be authorized by the FDA following previous approval by Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), announced last October in Korea.

The sleep apnea feature enables users over the age of 22 who have not been diagnosed with sleep apnea to detect signs of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) over a two-night monitoring period, a common and chronic sleep condition that often goes undiagnosed and untreated. To utilize the feature, users can simply track their sleep twice for more than four hours within a ten-day period.

OSA causes a person to stop breathing while sleeping and can often result in disruptions in oxygen supply, decreased sleep quality and increased daytime fatigue. Untreated sleep apnea can compound the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure, cardiac arrhythmia and stroke. According to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), roughly 25% of men and 10% of women in the U.S. experience OSA. The new feature on the Samsung Health Monitor app is expected to help more people proactively detect moderate or severe forms of OSA, and as a result of the detection seek medical care to reduce the possibility of health-related complications.

The quality of sleep people get every night has a significant impact on their physical and mental well-being, relationships, performance and more. For those with heart conditions, Medical AI software provides advanced ECG services that detect arrhythmia in daily life. By combining its own AI algorithms and the Galaxy Watch’s ECG technology³, the service provides smarter predictions and prompt alerts for patients. Oova is an AI-powered women’s health and fertility platform that remotely monitors hormone levels, connects to medical providers, and merges the Galaxy Watch’s biometric data with hormonal changes. This integration allows for more guidance through unique cycles, including perimenopause, and enables precise prediction of a woman’s fertile windows.

Healthier Body and Mind Through XR Therapy at Home

Extended reality (XR) has expanded to healthcare services, and with Samsung’s sensor technology, Galaxy Watch users can enter virtual worlds that provide immersive, therapeutic experiences from home. Samsung partner XRHealth is a virtual clinic that provides physical and mental health therapy in the comfort of one’s home. Samsung Electronics and Natural Cycles today announced a partnership to bring advanced temperature-based menstrual cycle tracking capabilities to the Galaxy Watch5 series — the first time Natural Cycles’ ground-breaking algorithm has been adapted for a smartwatch. This latest partnership combines Samsung’s superior sensor technology with Natural Cycles’ innovative fertility technology to give users more detailed insight into their menstrual cycle.

Galaxy Watch5 users will be able to access advanced cycle tracking through the Cycle Tracking feature, which was recently approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) of the Republic of Korea. The Cycle Tracking feature has also been registered with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and complies with CE Marking requirements.¹

Bixby has been integrated more deeply with SmartThings, a tool for developers to build more intelligent voice user interface experiences. As Samsung’s representative voice assistant platform, Bixby has evolved to become the on-device AI solution able to control individual Galaxy devices, as well as the cross-device experience throughout the Samsung ecosystem. With the new Bixby Home Studio, developers can now build differentiated, customized experiences for the SmartThings platform. In addition, Bixby will be even more widely available to users with support for Latin American Spanish, starting in November.

As the smart home is becoming more advanced, Samsung is introducing a new security paradigm, enabling Samsung devices to protect each other. Samsung Knox Matrix¹ is a private blockchain based platform that turns eligible Samsung devices into a shield to protect users’ entire device ecosystem — from Galaxy devices to TVs and home appliances. Plus, users can customize personal privacy settings with the new Security and privacy dashboard, which scans for vulnerabilities, recommends security updates and gives users data management options to keep privacy and security top of mind.

Personalized Services for Better Experiences

In the past year, Samsung TV Plus — Samsung’s free, ad-supported streaming TV and video (FAST) platform available on Samsung Smart TVs² and mobile devices — reached 100% growth in viewership,³ and projects three billion hours streamed by the end of the year. To build on this momentum, Samsung TV Plus has expanded its offering by adding partnerships with Lionsgate and Vice Media, providing 8K video on demand. Samsung TV Plus has also gone through a redesign, to reflect its extraordinary variety of content with more than 1,600 channels across 24 countries. Samsung TV Plus is the premium choice for a seamless ad experience, where stream stitching makes ad playback simpler than ever.

After 10 years of service, Samsung’s Tizen operating system (OS) continues to offer best-in-class user experiences. The Samsung Gaming Hub brings better, faster and more convenient access to gaming on Samsung Smart TVs, provided by industry-leading partners, such as Xbox, NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Utomik and Amazon Luna. Samsung Gaming Hub bridges expertise in hardware and software to integrate features like AI Upscaling and multitask functions to make gaming on Samsung Smart TVs an immersive, optimized experience.

Tizen OS is also expanding to offer NFTs support with partners like Art Token, laCollection and Nifty Gateway. For B2B customers and developers, Samsung is providing B2B APIs specific to industries and use cases like Syncplay, which allows content to be synchronized and played in multiple signages. Tizen is also introducing SALT, a new content conversion solution to display the highest-quality HDR10+ content on supported TVs.

Your Galaxy, Your Way With One UI 5

By introducing the new One UI 5, Samsung has empowered users to easily customize their device’s look and feel, while enhancing productivity and providing amazing experiences across devices and platforms. One UI 5 brings more personalized experiences with custom-built Modes and Routines, and a Dynamic Lock screen that displays multiple visuals on your phone, your Galaxy Watch and other One UI 5 devices. With the new Bixby Text Call feature, Bixby Voice will answer calls on your behalf and share typed messages with the caller, speaking aloud as if you had answered. One UI 5 also introduces new daily health solutions to help track health and wellness in one place. This includes the Samsung Privileged Health SDK, which enables developers to build apps that leverage the BioActive Sensor on the Galaxy Watch.⁴

Future-Forward Investment and Research

Samsung Research is looking beyond today’s horizon to innovate for a better tomorrow, full of relentless innovation and open collaboration. Samsung Research is making its robot arm manipulation code available on GitHub, enabling academics, researchers and developers to examine new ideas in robotic manipulation.

The team at Samsung Research was also inspired by the new wellness features Samsung has introduced, particularly on the Galaxy Watch5. To find new use-cases leveraging these features, Samsung Research is working with universities and healthcare institutions that will explore areas like heart health, stress, blood pressure, lung health and neuroscience. Samsung Privileged Health SDK: Advancing Preventative Safety in Driving

Samsung is collaborating with select industry leaders to develop personalized health services. With safety as one of Samsung’s focus areas, these collaborations will deliver all-new preventative tools to make roads safer by identifying early signs of driver fatigue and stress.

Samsung’s work with Tobii, a global leader in eye-tracking and attention computing that develops software to monitor drowsiness, is one example. If users choose to, Samsung’s Privileged Health SDK enables Tobii to sense real-time heart rate captured by Galaxy Watch sensors and process them to determine the user’s level of drowsiness. Also, Harman, a leader in connected car technology, audio innovations and IoT solutions, has recently introduced Ready Care, a complete automotive in-cabin sensing and tailored solution for driver safety and comfort. In addition to distraction, fatigue and vital sign sensing, users can allow Ready Care to measure cognitive load and stress level and can provide suggestions for alternative routes to lower a driver’s stress.

Health Services: New Fall Detection API for Enhanced Safety Capabilities

Health Services provides APIs that allow developers and third parties to harness the powerful sensors and algorithms on the Galaxy Watch for more accurate and advanced health offerings. Samsung is introducing a new API to the ecosystem that offers adjustable sensitivity for Fall Detection, strengthening preventative safety and setting the stage for even more potential offerings.

Developers can now create services using Galaxy Watch’s Fall Detection algorithms that sense a user’s stumble or fall by combining different sensors including an accelerometer and gyroscope. This API enables development of apps for users who may encounter unexpected accidents. Furthermore, Galaxy users are even able to adjust sensitivity levels — whether standing still, moving, or exercising — via the Galaxy Wearable app. Like sleep tracking that senses restless movements or falls from bed to paint a more complete picture of a user’s sleep, this API opens all new opportunities for developers and users alike.

End-to-End Research Solution: Accelerating Medical Service and Research

Samsung is also introducing an open-source project that provides end-to-end solutions combining SDK, backend system and portal for a variety of health applications. This all-in-one healthcare toolset empowers research and clinical experiences — starting at the developer level — by delivering advanced insights through Galaxy Watches and wearables to support medical research at institutions, hospitals, wellness centers and beyond.

Researchers can use this open source project to build modules that enable participants to join a study in a frictionless and informed way, streamlining the onboarding process. Flexible survey templates are also in place to satisfy the ever-changing needs of organizations. From there, relevant data and insights are gathered more easily from wearable devices, while participants are guided with actionable insights throughout the process. Encrypted participant data is then transmitted to the backend system where health and medical communities monitor and analyze the collected insights to inform patient treatment plans, upcoming research and much more. More details of the new project will be announced at SDC22 keynote by Sebastian Seung, President and the Head of Samsung Research.

Health Connect: Greater Insights and Data Control

Health Connect, announced in collaboration with Google during the spring of 2022, offers developers a single set of APIs enabling the seamless creation of new fitness and health experiences. Currently available in beta, Health Connect offers users centralized privacy controls that make it easy to give permission to the health and fitness apps they want to share their on-device data with. Now, Samsung Health and Fitbit, along with leading health and fitness apps including Leap Fitness, MyFitnessPal and Withings have adopted Health Connect to enable a more impactful and holistic wellness experience. And with a user’s permission, app developers can leverage certain data shared through Health Connect for use in their own applications in order to provide users with a more complete picture of their health.

Samsung is committed to giving its community — including users, third parties, developers and beyond — enhanced tools and resources to build and benefit from more connected and diverse health services. As part of Samsung’s overarching wellness initiatives, the company will continue to deliver an expansive ecosystem — which the Samsung community will hear more about during the SDC22 — that empowers users with more insights and information on health and wellbeing.

Sleep is a reset for the mind and body. A good night’s sleep strengthens both physical and cognitive health and helps people better perform tasks that require long periods of concentration. Being well rested can, for example, help people work more productively, drive more safely and think more clearly.

Given the impact that the pandemic had on our daily habits, it is worth exploring how our sleep may have changed as a result.

Let’s take a closer look at how sleep duration and efficiency changed across the globe since the start of the pandemic through the sleep patterns of global Samsung Health users.

Sleep Duration Versus Efficiency: Why It Matters

When it comes to sleep, longer duration does not necessarily mean better quality. For the purpose of this analysis, duration refers to the amount of time in bed trying to sleep, while sleep efficiency measures the percentage of time in bed that we actually spend sleeping.

While changes in lifestyle habits during the pandemic saw individuals globally sleeping longer, there seems to be no correlation between sleep duration and sleep efficiency.

In fact, despite people in all countries enjoying longer sleep times on average than before the pandemic, we actually experienced an overall decrease in sleep efficiency.

What’s more, the results varied by sex. While both males and females are resting more than they were prior to the pandemic, males are not only seeing a longer increase in sleep duration, they are also seeing a larger decrease in sleep efficiency compared to females.

Age is another factor providing interesting insights. While all age groups slept longer, sleep efficiency in fact decreased as age increased. The exception here is people between the ages of 20 and 39, who actually experienced a jump in sleep efficiency. Furthermore, this age group was the only one showing a significant increase in both duration and efficiency.

How the Pandemic Changed Regional Sleep Habits

We also undertook a deep dive into the 16 countries where individuals use Samsung Health the most to see how sleep habit trends varied by region. While all 16 countries saw an increase in sleep duration — with people, on average, waking up later than they used to — the effect on sleep efficiency was mixed.

Region-specific changes in global sleeping habits can be seen as follows:

• While sleep duration remained the longest — both pre- and post-pandemic — in France, the country’s sleep efficiency decreased.
• Users in Korea recorded one of the biggest increases in sleep duration and efficiency during the pandemic but still remained under the global average.
• The U.S. saw the biggest dip in sleep efficiency out of all the regions measured.
• While Germany saw the highest global sleep efficiency scores before the pandemic, it has since witnessed one of the most significant decreases in sleep efficiency.
• Argentina recorded the highest sleep efficiency following the start of the pandemic.
• While Indonesia was the region with the lowest sleep efficiency before the pandemic, this distinction now belongs to Vietnam. Furthermore, out of the 16 countries studied, Indonesia saw the highest increase in sleep efficiency from pre- to post-pandemic levels.
• Indonesia also saw a wake-up time delay of 11 minutes on average following the start of the pandemic. It was and remains the region recording the earliest wake-up times.
• Mexico is the region that has seen the biggest change in wake-up and sleep times. Going-to-bed time changed by 11 minutes on average, and wake-up time was delayed by 17 minutes.

How You Can Improve the Quality of Your Sleep

It is often said that healthy sleep for the average adult is 8 hours a night.¹ However, as the results show, sleep quality may also be an important factor to consider. Sleep tracking is one way we can better understand our sleep patterns to ensure that we are getting a better night’s sleep.

Many Galaxy customers take advantage of this, with 50% of Galaxy Watch users keeping track of their sleep at least once a week. Of those, 40% do so more than three times a week.² In order to manage your sleep better, take a look at these tips for using the Galaxy Watch series³ and consider adopting some to ensure each night of sleep is as restful as possible.

According to the NSF’s 2022 Sleep in America^® Poll, there’s significant opportunity to improve daily activities that are associated with positive sleep and health outcomes. Eating your meals at a consistent time, the amount of physical activity completed in the day, and even the level of light exposure during the day and around bedtime, all impact sleep health and are manageable.

The NSF has specific guidelines and recommendations for positive sleep health, and this, Lopos said, is where “technology can be a thread that runs through our sleep experience. It helps us as a reminder, a facilitator, a communicator and a tracker, and can play a role in helping meet the NSF’s recommendations for better sleep — both while awake and asleep.”

Controlling Your Sleep Environment

The right kind of light exposure during the day and night can make the difference between a good night’s sleep and a restless night. With nearly 60 percent of Americans saying they look at screens very often or somewhat often in the hour before bed or while in bed before sleep, it’s no wonder sleep quality is on the decline as light from phone, laptop and TV screens can significantly impact sleep.

To help prepare, the NSF provides a number of tips including prioritizing natural daylight exposure, adjusting your clocks the night before the time change, and in the week leading up to a clock change, going to bed a little earlier each night to adjust your sleep schedule. The NSF also encourages the practice of relaxation techniques to help get a good night’s sleep every day, including during a time change disruption. For example, the new sleep coaching program on the Galaxy Watch4 helps users achieve better sleep habits and achieve their sleep goals.² The Samsung program assigns one of eight sleep symbol animals representing the user’s sleep type after tracking sleep patterns over seven days and completing two related sleep surveys. Then, it guides users through a four-to-five-week coaching program that includes missions, checklists, guidance and reports to support users as they work towards improving their sleep health.

With wearable devices now a regular part of many people’s lifestyles today, tracking and understanding elements of sleep are more common than ever — and the NSF wants to see even more access to sleep technology, believing that the sleep technology industry is going to ride new waves of collaboration and knowledge sharing. “We’re going to see even more integration across wearable and connected devices, lifestyle and wellness platforms and home goods,” Lopos affirmed. “People’s choices and feedback will confirm there’s lots of room for products and services that use sleep technology.”

This improved standard builds upon Samsung’s previous promise to provide up to three generations of upgrades and ensures millions of Galaxy users have access to the latest features for security, productivity, better usability and more, for as long as they own their device. Samsung Electronics today announced a new update to the Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic, continuing its commitment to helping users reach their health and wellness goals and express their personal style. Users can expect new improvements like advanced interval training designed for any cyclist or runner, a new sleep coaching program and new body composition¹ insights. Galaxy Watch4 users will now have even more ways to customize their look with upgraded watch faces, and a new line of stylish straps.

The latest body composition update gives users even more insight into their health progress. Samsung Health will also be providing body composition insights powered by Centr,² a digital fitness program curated by Chris Hemsworth, to help users transform their health, fitness and mindset. In addition, Galaxy Watch4 users will receive a 30-day trial³ for full and unrestricted access to Centr. 

Whether you’re just looking to get active or training for an upcoming race, Samsung’s new interval target feature for runners and cyclists lets them pre-set the duration, distance and number of sets for their workout. From there, Galaxy Watch4 guides them through a custom intensity training session with a series of high-intensity workouts interspersed with low-intensity workouts, making for an impactful and targeted workout every time.

We are continuing our collaboration with top-ranked apps⁴ like adidas Running and Strava to help users power through their exercise.

Work Towards a Better Night’s Sleep

Building on Galaxy Watch4’s robust sleep tracking capabilities, the new sleep coaching program helps users develop better sleep habits. By tracking sleep patterns over seven days and completing two related sleep surveys, the program assigns one of eight sleep symbol animals representing the user’s sleep type. Then, it will guide users through a four to five week coaching program that includes missions, checklists, sleep-related articles, meditation guidance and regular reports to support users as they work towards improving their sleep quality.

When it comes to waking up refreshed, a peaceful and quiet environment is key to achieving a healthy rest as well. Galaxy Watch4 recognizes when users fall asleep and automatically turns off Samsung SmartThings enabled lights to help create better sleeping conditions.⁵

Deeper Insights for a Healthier Heart

Combined with the advanced BioActive Sensor technology and Samsung Health Monitor app,⁶ Galaxy Watch4 measures both blood pressure⁷ (BP) and electrocardiogram⁸ (ECG), allowing users to monitor their heart health anytime and from anywhere. Since the first introduction in 2020, Samsung Health Monitor app is currently available in 43 markets globally, expanding to 11 more in March, including Canada, Vietnam and South Africa.

Greater Selection of Matching Straps and Watch Faces

The new Galaxy Watch4 update makes the wearable experience even better, from the inside out. Users can further customize their watch face with additional colors and digital clock fonts that make the watch truly their own. Also, new strap colors⁹ such as burgundy and cream, and the new fabric band and link bracelet will be available for a more personalized look.

Committed to Expanding Compatibility Within the Android Ecosystem

In 2021, Samsung and Google introduced co-developed Wear OS Powered by Samsung, bringing smoother connections across Android devices and seamless access to more apps via Google Play including Google Maps, Google Pay and YouTube Music. Coming soon through an additional update, users will be able to stream music over Wi-Fi or LTE from the YouTube Music app on their Galaxy Watch4. This means that users can leave their phone behind and still enjoy their favorite artists as they work out on-the-go.

Additionally, Google Assistant will be available on Galaxy Watch4 series in the coming months. With access to both Bixby and Google Assistant, consumers will be equipped with advanced voice assistant functionality to meet their various needs.

Users can also now install their favorite smartphone apps¹⁰ on their Galaxy Watch4 during initial setup with one tap, creating a seamless experience across devices right out of the box.

This makes it easier to keep both yourself and your more vulnerable loved ones safe.²

Work Out With Friends Using Updated Group Challenge

Group Challenge enables you to work out with friends no matter how far apart you are – helping you stay motivated and connected by working out together. With the new update, you can now add your friends or family members to a Challenge, battling it out to see who can go the furthest or the fastest, either working as a team or competing against each other individually. Keep track of your own place in the competition or see how you’re performing as a team – all from your wrist.

Get a More Holistic Insight Into Your Health

The Galaxy Watch series has introduced a vast suite of advanced health features – from heart rate tracking and blood oxygen measurement to sleep and stress management.³ Plus, with ground-breaking Blood Pressure (BP)⁴ and Electrocardiogram (ECG)⁵ monitoring in select markets, Galaxy Watch users can benefit from accurate health monitoring and gain deeper insights into their overall health through the Samsung Health Monitor app.

OH is common among PD patients and can increase the risk of falls for those in the elderly age group and may already have existing cardiovascular diseases. Measuring blood pressure (BP) frequently can help detect critical fluctuations for diagnosing and managing PD.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch3, Galaxy Watch Active2 and the latest Galaxy Watch4 feature sophisticated sensors that can monitor BP through pulse wave analysis, which is tracked with Heart Rate Monitoring sensors. Users can closely monitor their blood pressure and other vitals in the Samsung Health Monitor app and share them with medical professionals in a PDF file format during consultations.¹

A research team at the Samsung Medical Center, led by Dr. Jin Whan Cho and Dr. Jong Hyeon Ahn, compared BP measurements collected by the Galaxy Watch3 with those measured by a sphygmomanometer to compare accuracy. The test found that using Galaxy Watch3—which is more portable and convenient than a conventional sphygmomanometer—allows PD patients to measure their BP wherever and whenever they need to, and easily track any BP fluctuation.

The test was conducted on 56 patients—with a mean age of 66.9—with a sphygmomanometer reference on one arm and the Galaxy Watch3 on the other. Each patient had their BP measured with both devices three times.

The findings show that BP measured by both the Galaxy Watch and the sphygmomanometer were comparable. The mean and standard deviation of the differences were 0.4 ± 4.6 mmHg for systolic BP (SBP) and 1.1 ± 4.5 mmHg for diastolic BP (DBP). The correlation coefficient (r) between the two devices was 0.967 for SBP and 0.916 for DBP. The closer the correlation coefficient is to 1, the more the two devices track each other.

The research team said, “Orthostatic hypotension is a common and challenging symptom that affects people living with PD. But it is hard to screen just by observing symptoms, and the problem may go undetected when measuring BP.” The team added, “If we could use a smartwatch to measure patients’ BP regularly and detect potential issues at an early stage, it would really help treat and manage PD.”

The study, led by Dr. Cho and Dr. Ahn’s research team, titled “Validation of Blood Pressure Measurement Using a Smartwatch in Patients With Parkinson’s Disease”, was published in the latest issue of the leading medical journal Frontiers in Neurology.

Seamless Aesthetic, Seamless Fit

The Galaxy Watch4’s strap connects seamlessly and effortlessly to the watch body. Samsung’s designers created a silhouette that serves as an outline for the circular frame in order to emphasize the screen better. The body line design is not only crucial for aesthetic appeal, but also for providing optimal fit for users. The designers carried out countless mock-up trials in order to create the slimmest and most flexible line design possible that also offers users a natural and snug fit on their wrists.

Meticulous Design

A smartwatch can help a user track their movement and other health-related information as it is so closely placed in contact with its user’s body. Samsung’s designers focused on his ‘monitoring’ aspect of the smartwatch and considered several ways to improve the watch’s fit and stability for this purpose. The result of this development process is the H-Wing strap. The Galaxy Watch4 series’ H-Wing strap connects with the screen and ensures that the sensors underneath the watch are attached firmly to the user’s wrist. Effective Materials

Samsung’s designers made sure to produce a strap for the Galaxy Watch4 series that is able to meet a user’s expectation in terms of aesthetic as well as functionality. The resulting Hybrid Leather Band was designed meticulously with both these standards in mind: its exterior is made of leather, while the interior of the strap is made with sweat-resistant Fluoroelastomer (FKM). While the exterior and the interior sides of the strap are made from different materials, they come together seamlessly thanks to a unified color scheme.

With the new Galaxy Z series, we’re bringing foldable innovations to more consumers by breaking down the barriers of entry with our pricings. I am confident that with our new Galaxy Z series, we can drive record high demand for foldables, inviting even more consumers to enjoy this new way of using their smartphone.

Q: How are you addressing durability concerns with the new Galaxy Z series? Are the new foldables really durable enough for everyday extended use?

Answered by Dr. Won-Joon Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of the Flagship Product R&D Team, Mobile Communications Business

For the new foldable series, we had a big mission: the durability, so that our customers can use the devices with peace of mind for everyday extended use. To do that, we started from scratch in order to make the ‘impossible’, ‘possible’.

Water resistance and increased durability are the key features we focused on for our new foldable devices so that users can take their devices with them anywhere with confidence, whether they are breaking a sweat at the gym or relaxing by the pool.

We are able to deliver the world’s first water resistant foldable smartphones by implementing an innovative sealing design that our engineering team has come up with. We’ve also increased the durability of our flexible displays by about 80 percent compared to the previous foldables by redesigning the layer structure and using a new protective film.

Furthermore, the outer body of the Galaxy Z series is protected by Armor Aluminum and Gorilla Glass Victus, our strongest aluminum frame and toughest glass material yet. Thanks to all these innovations, we believe that foldable smartphones such as the Galaxy Z series are set to become the new standard in mobile devices as the category turns mainstream.

Q: What are you most excited about with Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3?

We designed the new Galaxy Z series to address consumers’ needs in every moment – capturing, communicating, sharing and expressing. One of my favorite features is the hands-free selfie with the Galaxy Z Flip3. Continuing our collaboration with Google, we made the video call experience even better. Within Google Duo, the camera automatically zooms in and out to fit everyone into the frame. With HD quality, our premium camera system and the devices’ amazing displays, your hands-free video calls are vivid, clear and more enjoyable.

Furthermore, for Galaxy Z Fold3, we have enabled the S Pen experience with our Wacom partnership, so that users can write down on its large screen for the first time on foldables. You can even watch content on the top half of your screen and take notes with your S Pen on the bottom half.

Q: Is there enough market demand for foldable devices? What do you think consumers want from the new Galaxy Z series?

Now, Samsung Newsroom is comparing the Galaxy Watch3 with the first iteration of the series, the original Galaxy Watch, to show just how far Samsung’s wearable technology has come. Not only has the Galaxy Watch3 been optimized to allow users a more active and personal smartwatch experience, but, when compared to the Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch3 is thinner and lighter, with a larger display. Galaxy Watch3 also features premium design and provides health and wellness features that include blood oxygen¹ and blood pressure monitoring² as well as electrocardiogram³ readings.

It is a common adage that it takes 30 days to make a habit, and at a time when personal hygiene is more important than ever, best-practice hygiene should form part of everyone’s daily habits.

According to the research conducted by the University of New South Wales and published in 2015 by the American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC), people touch their face 23 times an hour on average, of which 10 touches are to the eyes, nose or mouth – the main pathways that can lead to bacterial or viral infection. This connection between our hands and our faces makes hand washing the most basic step in personal hygiene; the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) even calls it a “do-it-yourself” vaccine, and the United Nations (UN) has, since 2008, designated October 15 as Global Handwashing Day.

In order to help people get into the habit of properly washing their hands, Samsung has, on April, launched a Hand Wash application for wearable users. The app is available for download on the Galaxy Store for Gear S3, Gear Sports, Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active and Galaxy Watch Active2¹ users. Read on to learn how the app can help you engage in best-practice hand hygiene throughout the day.

Setting the Standard for Hand Washing

While awareness has increased the importance of washing one’s hands frequently and thoroughly, opinions can differ on what ‘frequently and thoroughly’ actually means in practice. This is why Samsung has developed an app to provide a clear guide on how, and how regularly, users should be washing their hands. The Hand Wash app, discoverable by searching ‘Hand Wash’ in the Watch section of the Galaxy Store, helps users to remember to wash their hands at regularly scheduled intervals throughout the day.

Establishing Your Routine

So, how frequently should we be washing our hands? A 2020 study by University College London (UCL) found that handwashing 6-10 times a day was linked to a lowered infection risk. But as we go about our busy days, it is not always easy to remind ourselves to keep up with this regular washing routine.

To help you engage in regular handwashing, the Hand Wash app includes an alarm function; users can select the Reminders button to add or modify the timings of their alarms. For example, users can set an alarm that will notify them every two hours so that they can be sure to wash their hands at regular intervals. The number of alarms each user sets will then correspond to a target number on the app’s dashboard.

Washing Your Hands Thoroughly & Properly

It takes longer than you may think to wash your hands thoroughly. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends washing your hands for at least 20 seconds – roughly the time it takes to sing the ‘Happy Birthday’ song twice. But of course, singing or humming along every time you go to wash your hands is not always practical.

This is where the countdown function of the Hand Wash comes in useful. The countdown is 25 seconds long, including 5 seconds for applying soap and 20 seconds for scrubbing. Once you receive the alarm notification that it is time to wash your hands, you can easily tap and swipe your Watch to start the counter, which will provide haptic feedback as well graphics once the timer starts. Furthermore, all Galaxy Watches are waterproof, so there is no need to remove the watch once you go to wash your hands.

Keeping Track of Your Personal Hygiene

While setting regular alarms is a good way to maintain your handwashing habit, of course there could be times between these intervals where other instances arise that require you to keep your hands hygienic, such as visiting the bathroom, preparing food and having a meal.

On the Hand Wash app’s dashboard, users can easily keep track of how long it has been since they last washed their hands, as well as review their daily handwashing target number and how many times they have washed their hands so far in a day. If users find themselves washing their hands before their next scheduled reminder alarm, users can just tap the ‘Wash now’ button before washing their hands to disable the upcoming alarm.

Monitoring Progress on a Weekly Basis

Maintaining a habit means committing to it over time – and committing to wash your hands at least 6-10 times a day is no exception.

To help build their handwashing habit, users can utilize the Hand Wash Trend Tracking function of the app, which logs each day’s handwashing occurrences and provides a weekly average.

To effectively prevent the spread of germs, the way you wash your hands is just as important as the frequency of doing so. When washing your hands, you should not only scrub your palms, but also the areas in between the fingers and the backs of the hands. The following 6 steps are a best-practice guide to ensure that you clean your hands properly and thoroughly.

Globally, high blood pressure is known to significantly increase your risk of brain, kidney and heart diseases, including stroke and coronary heart disease when not managed properly. By helping users measure and track their blood pressure, the Samsung Health Monitor app gives people greater insight into their health and allows them to make more informed decisions, to lead healthier lives.

Once your Galaxy Watch Active2 device has been calibrated with a traditional cuff, you can simply tap to “Measure” your blood pressure anytime, anywhere. The device measures blood pressure through pulse wave analysis, which is tracked with the Heart Rate Monitoring sensors. The program then analyzes the relationship between the calibration value and the blood pressure change to determine the blood pressure.² To ensure accuracy, users are required to calibrate their device at least every four weeks.

With the addition of blood pressure monitoring, the Galaxy Watch Active2 boasts Samsung’s most advanced health and wellness capabilities yet. The Galaxy Watch Active2 comes with more sensitive and accurate Heart Rate Monitoring sensors, and enables users to track their exercise, sleep, stress and get added healthcare insights that can help you improve your wellbeing.³

The Samsung Health Monitor app will be available on the Galaxy Watch Active2 within the third quarter and will progressively expand to upcoming Galaxy Watch devices.

Themes will give your entire device a makeover with new skins for your icons, backgrounds, and even fonts.

While themes will change the general appearance of your phone, the wallpaper is simply the background image on your home screen. The Galaxy Store also features a wide variety of wallpapers to choose from to customize your home screen.

Best of 2019

Customization was popular throughout the Galaxy Store in 2019 as tech increasingly became an important part of fashion and individual expression. In February 2019, Samsung consolidated its themes and apps under the Galaxy store, which is now home to a growing number of themes and watch faces. Thanks in part to these additions, the store has also seen its customer base grow rapidly over the last year.

Last year saw a burst in popularity of the colorful and unique themes in the Galaxy Store from designers around the world. The most popular theme categories were simple, nature, colorful, and cute.

Cogul Planet Inc.’s goofy, Siba-inspired theme, Siba  Rich_Premium Free Sound Pack S10, captured the trend perfectly.

“2019 was happier because many users loved the theme I created,” said Cogul Planet Inc.’s lead designer. “We will continue to create themes that make people laugh and touch their hearts in the future.” In addition to cute characters, black and blue themes were also popular throughout the year.

The deep black and rich bronze tones of Sebastian Wolodkiewicz’s [SW] Luxury Gear theme are one such example, featuring a steam-punk aesthetic that was popular among Galaxy Store users. The black and blue trend wasn’t just limited to themes, as users also sought rich blues and dark blacks for their wallpapers.

Some designers, such as studio 1624, embraced the darker side of the trend. The studio’s Urban Rain video wallpaper turns your phone into a rain-streaked window, for those that love the melancholy of a rainy afternoon. Other designers used the color trends to create bold works of art in their wallpapers. Bergen Themes’s high-contrast, Live Colorfully HD, wallpaper was a hit in the Galaxy Store last year. Watch faces, on the other hand, focused more on health and wellness. Users preferred watch faces that allowed them to track health and wellness stats easily right from their wrist.

The MD153 New Hybrid Watch Face from Matteo Dini capitalized on this trend by allowing users to track everything they need in one watch face. Featuring a calendar, heart rate monitor, step counter, and both digital and analog clocks, it has something for everyone. Even more luxurious watch faces included health and wellness features.

Designer Tatyana Galkina went with a more luxury look for the Golden Floral watch face that was among the most popular in the Galaxy Store last year. Adorned with golden and purple flowers, the watch face allows its users to track their daily steps and heart rate in addition to the time and battery levels. Other watch faces focused on seasonal trends.

Once Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active users download the latest software update, they will be able to take fuller advantage of what Bixby has to offer, including using Bixby Voice to start exercise routines, find out time differences between places, and easily control their SmartThings ecosystem. Not only does Bixby learn from your routine and become more helpful over time, but its newly expanded language capabilities include British English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

With this latest upgrade, Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active users will also be able to customize their Watch faces more than ever before. Across all of our Galaxy Watch models, users will now have access to 24 new sub-dials and complications, building on the 17 already available, making the watch even more customizable, so users can access exactly the information they want, where they want it. And notably, the improved UX will bring our new My Style feature to Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active for the first time.

The new update brings several new UX features to both the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active as well, significantly streamlining the user experience. Icons for in-use apps have been moved to the bottom of the watch face, helping users keep track of and quickly access any apps with in-progress tasks, such as outgoing calls. Additionally, the current time will now always be displayed on-screen when the stopwatch app is in use or users are on a call, and users can more easily customize the icons in their quick panel thanks to a change in layout. Other UX benefits include a clearer graphic UI, easier user interaction, and new emoji offerings in a range of diverse skin tones. For Galaxy Watch Active users, a new Touch Bezel interface is included in the upgrade, allowing users to navigate using finger swipe actions around the bezel.

The new UX also features a number of new capabilities for Samsung Health. Users can now keep track of their fitness goals through the Daily Active feature, as well as track lap times while running or cycling. And as part of the expanded heart monitoring suite, Galaxy Watch will now support a Low Heart Rate Alert.

Beginning today, Samsung will begin to roll out the update region-by-region. The new software update will offer Galaxy Watch users even more tools for taking ownership over their health, more opportunities to make navigating your Galaxy Watch easier using Bixby Voice commands, and more ways to turn their favorite watch into a statement piece.

The Newsroom found the smartwatch’s advanced sleep tracker particularly useful, as the Galaxy Watch monitors four levels of sleep, including REM cycles, helping wearers to adjust their sleeping habits and get the rest they need.

The device’s inactive time alerts remind wearers who have been sitting for a prolonged period of time to stand up and move around. The alerts suggest simple stretching exercise and provide little messages of encouragement to keep you motivated.

With a variety of automatic sensors, the Galaxy Watch can monitor the wearer’s real-time health information. The smartwatch detects details such as your heart rate, global position and movements to measure and analyze your health status. The device’s accelerometer sensor, gyro sensor and the heart rate sensor can automatically recognize six types of activity – including walking, running and riding a bicycle, amongst others. The Galaxy Watch will begin to record information after 10 consecutive minutes of an activity and analyzes total activity to provide feedback for the wearer.

Samsung’s human-centric LED solution can improve a person’s concentration level by as much as 10% for greater work efficiency. Furthermore, it also can help people to sleep better at night due to the melatonin hormone having been suppressed by the LM302S during the daytime.

Samsung SSM-U Series – A new type of smart module featuring a series of tiny radar-based sensors with higher detecting sensitivity than conventional sensors, and invisible transmission for greater design flexibility in smart residential lighting. The SSM-U series can detect subtle movements and transmit the signal to other components to control lighting at the right time.

Samsung Electronics designed the Galaxy Watch with a focus on delivering the level of ease and intuitiveness that makes a smart device truly and unequivocally smart. Recently, Samsung Newsroom spoke with members of the new smartwatch’s development team—product planner Myung-hwan Lee and hardware developer Joo-ho Lee—who discussed how they designed some of the Galaxy Watch’s most convenient and intuitive features.

Myung-hwan Lee began by outlining the Galaxy Watch team’s goal of designing “a product that virtually anyone could use without difficulty.” He pointed to the device’s ability to automatically detect and log certain exercises—such as runs, walks and cycling sessions—as an example of its ease of use¹.

The Galaxy Watch utilizes its heart-rate sensor and accelerometer to measure users’ sleep² patterns when they wear the device to bed, and classifies sleep quality in four categories.

The smartwatch incorporates insights it gains from analyzing users’ sleep into the briefings that it automatically sends them every morning and night. The morning briefing displays sleep quality, as well as useful contextual information such as the weather forecast and the user’s schedule. The evening briefing reminds users of any pending events on their schedule, includes a summary of their level of activity for that day, and also displays the next day’s forecast.

Myung-hwan explained how, to help make the briefing function as convenient as possible, the team designed it to notify users at optimal times. This means that once the Galaxy Watch has analyzed the user’s sleep and wake-up patterns, it automatically issues the morning and evening briefings before they typically go to bed, and just after they normally wake up.

The App Shortcuts widget is another particularly useful example of the Galaxy Watch’s ‘smart’ automation. This clever feature automatically analyzes the user’s location and the time of day and presents them with shortcuts to frequently accessed apps that they might need.

To illustrate its convenience, Myung-hwan described how the widget makes it easier for users to streamline their commute. “When it’s time to go to work,” he explained, “the Galaxy Watch will place a public transportation app in the App Shortcuts widget if that’s the app that the user uses most when he or she goes to the office.”

The Galaxy Watch’s App Shortcuts widget takes the time and the user’s location into account and automatically presents them with the apps that they use most often under those conditions.

The Galaxy Watch’s robust set of intuitive features is complemented by a likewise robust design. As hardware developer Joo-ho Lee described, Samsung designed the device to be exceptionally durable, and subjected it to extensive real-world tests to ensure that it would offer users as much utility as possible.

Joo-ho emphasized that durability is a key focus when designing smartwatches, as they’re meant to be worn all day and therefore need to be able to stand up to the elements. “As part of the development process, we conducted tests related to users’ allergies, external shocks, extreme temperatures, and various other elements,” he said. “We’re also proud to report that the Galaxy Watch has been certified to U.S. Department of Defense standards for military (MIL STD 810G) use.”

Of course, as Joo-ho noted, proper evaluation of a device’s durability requires taking it out of the lab and into real environments. “For example,” he explained, “to test the Galaxy Watch’s exercise-tracking function, we actually ran sprints at a park during what ended up being Korea’s hottest summer on record.”

The Galaxy Watch is more than simply an efficient and durable smartwatch. As its name indicates, it also allows users to enjoy seamlessly connected experiences across the huge ecosystem of devices that share the ‘Galaxy’ name. The smartwatch enables users to not only manage IoT devices, but also access convenient services such as Samsung Health, Samsung Pay (NFC only)³, Samsung Flow, Samsung Knox, Bixby and more, simply by lifting their wrist.

As Myung-hwan noted, the development team continues to identify innovative ways to take Galaxy Watch users’ experience to the next level.

“We are continuing our all-out efforts to redefine the user experience for wearable devices,” he explained. “We are constantly cooperating with partners to identify ways to improve the device and make it more useful to users, and we plan to develop a variety of convenience-focused apps in the future.”

More Interactive and Personalized Content Built Around You  

With an updated user experience, more user-friendly visual design and new features, Samsung Health 6.0 is more intuitive, interactive, personalized and easier to navigate. Taking user feedback and the latest design trends into consideration, the Samsung Health home screen is now simplified, categorized and prioritized according to the user’s personal needs and habits, so that users can quickly view and access preferred features.

The improved ‘Together’ tab now allows users to share photos and celebrate fitness milestones and achievements with friends all within the app. Users can also connect with Samsung’s community of users around the world to exchange texts and photos, compare achievements and encourage each other to do more to reach wellness goals together by participating in the monthly ‘Global Challenge’. The updated ‘Discover²’ tab provides a more tailored user experience, allowing users to easily find health-related content – including articles, programs and partner apps – based on their interests and level of fitness. Additionally, users can now purchase wearables, accessories, and health-related goods and services all within the platform³.

Samsung Health is also committed to strengthening its collaboration with partners to expand its digital health ecosystem and provide the best experience to users. Samsung Health now supports a complete set of SDKs for app and web service integration. This enables strategic partners to expand their services and enhance user experience. With the latest user interface and updated ‘Discover’ feature, users can find services quickly and easily, giving partners enhanced visibility of their apps, products, and content⁴.

Samsung Health on Samsung Smartwatches – the Ultimate Fitness Companion

The newly enhanced Samsung Health interface on Samsung wearables and smartwatches features more at-a-glance information, a workout countdown, GPS and heart rate tracking information, all available with the tap of a button. With the latest update, users can now choose from 39 different exercises and track their fitness progress when they pair with a Samsung wearable device or smartwatch. The latest Samsung smartwatch, Galaxy Watch, also allows the application to detect one of the 39 different exercises, and record data even when users switch between activities – such as from running to cycling – tracking the entire workout from start to finish⁵.

Users can get more out of their Samsung smartwatch, even when the workout is over, with Samsung Health’s new wellness and stress management features. With ‘Sleep Stage Detection,’ users can track their sleep cycles to improve sleep habits. Users can also manage stress in real-time through heart rate and heart rate variability monitoring, as well as with a guided breathing exercise program.

Samsung Health’s Telehealth Offerings Put You in Control

Samsung Health strives to provide more intuitive and accessible healthcare options for consumers globally. Samsung Health includes ‘Symptom Checker’ and ‘Ask an Expert⁶,’ which allow users to access medical information, look up symptoms, manage prescriptions and even chat live with certified doctors, all within a single application.  Additionally, Samsung Health has built a partner ecosystem with well-known health brands, like Babylon (UK) and American Well (US), creating many more ways for users to improve their health and wellbeing.

Since its launch in 2012, “S Health”, a basic nutrition and fitness tracker available on select Galaxy smartphones, has grown to “Samsung Health,” a comprehensive digital health platform. For the third and final in the Online Docent series, Samsung invites you to tour the very latest in mobile technology, straight from the CityCube Berlin exhibition center. Read on for a virtual guide of the Mobile zone, where the Galaxy Note9 is on full display along with the Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Tab S4 and other latest Samsung mobile devices in a variety of exciting and hands-on experiential booths.

The Mobile zone offers fun for all ages, with plenty of opportunities to play with Samsung’s newest smartphones, tablets, wearables and more.

Galaxy Note9 – The New Super Powerful Note

The Mobile zone tour begins with booths presenting a full overview of the latest in the Galaxy Note series, demonstrating its enhancements designed to provide users with “the highest perfection.” The Galaxy Note9 has been designed to offer the speed, power and performance that today’s users want and need. Users can spend all day with their phone in hand without having to worry about battery life, thanks to the Galaxy Note9’s 4,000mAh battery¹. The Galaxy Note9 also offers users more space to complete tasks efficiently and effectively, with 128GB/512GB of internal storage². Furthermore, a slimmer cut and symmetrical curves accompanied by its 6.4-inch display, the Galaxy Note9 matched with AKG built-in stereo speakers provides the most immersive experience yet.

Since its launch along with the original Galaxy Note in 2011, the S Pen has provided innovative ways and exciting to users to communicate and streamline their Note experience. For its latest iteration, Samsung understood that users needed their S Pen to be able to do more than personalize their writing, drawing or ‘Screen-off’ memo drafting needs; and so, the S Pen now comes with an integrated Bluetooth Low-Energy module so that users can remotely control their device from a distance. The remote-control aspect allows users to take selfies remotely at the click of a button. Users can also use it as a convenient clicker with Samsung DeX, for remote, seamless presentation slide control.

At the S Pen Galaxy Photo Booth, visitors can experiment with the S Pen’s new remote capabilities – by just pressing a button on the S Pen, visitors are able to take a selfie, even when the phone is about 10 meters away from them.

At the S Pen Live Message Relay booth, visitors are experiencing more of the S Pen’s advanced features. Attendees can create their very own AR Emoji on the Galaxy Note9 and use the S Pen to add personalized Live Messages, drawings and more effects. These can be shared with other attendees through the screen at the event.

The Echoverse booth features special lighting and mirror effects, providing an exciting space for visitors to design a Live Message with the S Pen before taking a selfie and sharing the unique results.

Next up on the tour, the Camera Experience booths are demonstrating to visitors how the advanced camera in the Galaxy Note9 can help them take their best photos yet – effortlessly. Brand new intelligent functions, Scene Optimizer and Flaw Detection, do the work for you in capturing the perfect picture. The Galaxy Note9’s camera also features support for Samsung’s recently introduced Super Slow-mo function and AR Emojis that are more expressive than ever, so that you’ll never run out of fun ways to communicate with friends.

This interactive booth allows visitors to explore how groundbreaking the Super Slow-mo function of the Note9 can be. Attendees can choose an RC Car from the extensive line-up on offer, race them using the Note9 and utilize Super Slow-mo to fully capture and enjoy the dynamic scene.

Galaxy Watch – Heritage Design, Lifestyle Function

The Galaxy Note9’s wider ecosystem, powered by SmartThings, allows users centralized, easy control of their Samsung devices. The improved Galaxy Watch maintains its classic real watch design, but now comes with maximized battery life⁴ and LTE connectivity to allow integration across your devices, even when away from your Galaxy smartphone. The Galaxy Watch is the perfect lifestyle tool, introducing innovative tools to track your stress levels and sleep cycles⁵, providing an informative morning/evening debrief, and the ‘My Day’ watch face allows you quick access to the next 10 hours of your schedule.

At the Galaxy Watch Experience booth, users are learning how the Galaxy Watch has also become the ultimate fitness tool. Swim-ready with 5ATM support⁶, it has 39 exercise types for you to choose from and the device can detect the 6 most common exercise types automatically. Available in two sizes, the Galaxy Watch is the perfect complement to your daily activities, whatever your lifestyle type. And with a wide variety of straps to choose from, including the 25 especially stylish options from Samsung and Braloba that are currently on display in Samsung’s booth, it’s easy to customize your Galaxy Watch with a look that suits your style.

IFA visitors challenge themselves as well as other attendees with the connectivity and support of the Galaxy Watch in the trampoline section of the Fitness experiential booth.

In addition to offering users tools to help them take charge of their health and fitness, the Galaxy Watch features a wide variety of strap options that allow users to customize their watch with a look that suits their style.

Collaboration Galaxy and Art

In the center of the Mobile zone, this year’s IFA presentation features Samsung’s latest creative collaboration with British pop artist Sam Cox, more commonly known as Mr. Doodle. The Mr. Doodle Façade Wall serves as a centerpiece, showcasing the full immersive quality of the bezel-less Galaxy Note9 screen as phones come together to display Mr. Doodle’s quirky and imaginative style in impressive ‘infinity’ style.

Samsung Electronics and Sam Cox (aka “Mr. Doodle”) have come together to showcase a special collaboration of technology and art. This side of the display wall utilizes The Frame, the Galaxy Note9 and the Galaxy Tab S4 so that visitors can fully enjoy the eye-catching nature of Mr. Doodle’s work as a media art.

Using the Galaxy Tab S4 and its refined S Pen, Mr. Doodle decorates a photo of a guest with his trademark quirky illustrations, creating a truly unforgettable souvenir.

Full VR Immersion

VR gaming has never been so exciting. At the 4D Experience booth, visitors can take part in an interactive 4D racing game with a car simulator. Also at the Galaxy Shoot-out VR, pairs of guests wearing Galaxy Note9-equipped Gear VRs, gloves and foot sensors can battle it out in a one-on-one soccer penalty shoot-out. Enthusiastic participants can even check the scoreboard afterwards to see how they ranked.
