Alongside its Unpacked event, Samsung launched its first-ever Global Goals band for Samsung Galaxy Watch.1 This is the first Samsung watch band designed to contribute to the Global Goals, and it is expected to be available in 14 markets: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, the United States and the United Kingdom.

To help build a better world, 5% of every Global Goals band purchased will be donated to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), advancing their global work in developing sustainable policies and building resilient institutions in more than 170 countries.

Samsung has also released two new Global Goals watch faces across the globe, which seamlessly integrate with the Samsung Global Goals App. The Samsung Global Goals watch faces make it easier than ever for Samsung Galaxy users to contribute to the causes they care about. For instance, the new watch faces share thought-provoking quotes related to the Goals, and allows Samsung Galaxy users to easily learn more about the Global Goals. The Global Goals watch faces aim to inspire the Samsung Galaxy community to care about and engage with the Goals, which are more important now than ever before.

Mobilizing the Samsung Galaxy Community

In 2015, the UN Sustainable Development Goals — also known as the Global Goals — were developed by world leaders with the target of making the world a better place by 2030. The Global Goals encompass critical global issues, such as inequality, climate change and education, and set a roadmap of ambitious milestones for societal good.

To help accelerate global progress by 2030, Samsung partnered with the UNDP in 2019 to create the Samsung Global Goals App. Installed on over 200 million Samsung Galaxy smartphones worldwide, the app offers simple ways for users to learn about the Global Goals, spread awareness and generate funding for the UNDP’s global initiatives.

With less than 10 years left until the 2030 deadline to achieve the Global Goals, there is an urgent need to act. Samsung’s mission is to inspire people around the world to take small individual actions which, together, can add up to an exponential, global good.

The release of the new Global Goals watch accessories represent one of the small, meaningful steps Samsung is taking to achieve the collective goal.

1 Sold separately in select markets. The Global Goals watch band is compatible with Samsung Galaxy Watch4, Watch4 Classic, Watch5 and Watch5 Pro.

Next week, Samsung will share its latest lineup of innovative products designed to enhance users’ everyday lives, including updates that empower fitness and wellness routines. Ahead of the unveiling, we’d like to take the time to reflect our philosophy, achievements and progress that we have made as we approach our most recent step in our health journey.

The world has entered a new era of wellness, seeing a growing desire for a more nuanced understanding of overall health. In the past, health was a simple concept with a single definition. Now, everyone defines health and wellness by what it means to them. To accommodate everyone’s health goals, Samsung is committed to ensuring everyone has access to the resources they need, so they can work towards the best version of themselves.

To that end, we are focused on setting new standards for health experiences through our Galaxy Watch series and across our broader product portfolio. We have established three key pillars to help people reach their own goals: sensor innovation, connected wellness and industry collaboration.

Advanced Sensors for More Meaningful Insights

To create healthier habits and reach goals, it’s important we know ourselves better. For our users, this journey starts with Samsung’s groundbreaking BioActive Sensor. The BioActive Sensor delivers accurate and comprehensive health data and provides actionable insights and guidance users can leverage during their health and wellness journey.

First introduced with the Galaxy Watch4, the BioActive Sensor uses a unique single chip that combines three powerful health sensors — Optical Heart Rate (PPG), Electrical Heart Signal (ECG) and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) — into one compact unit. Its streamlined design enhances performance and fits comfortably for increased accuracy and 24/7 usage. This helps users deepen their understanding, encourages action and strengthens good habits to help them achieve their goals.

Our sensor provides insights across all aspects of health, but we’d like to highlight two key areas: sleep and body composition. Sleep is often an afterthought when establishing a solid wellness routine, but it is essential for holistic health. At Samsung, we’re serious about helping our community get better sleep. We’ve introduced various sleep quality tracking tools and launched a tailored sleep coaching program all aimed to help users get a more restful night’s sleep.

When it comes to fitness, in particular, everyone’s goals are different. That’s why BioActive Sensor also measures body composition, which deepens users’ knowledge of their physical health, far beyond merely losing weight. The sensor sends microcurrents to measure weight maintained, skeletal muscle gained, body fat lost and body water levels, relative to goals set, helping users hit targets and keep track of what matters to them.

Across these advancements, we remain intensely committed to the secure and private collection of data to give our users peace of mind during their wellness journeys. All health data is encrypted and secured on the device itself and guarded by Knox, ensuring users’ information remains isolated from unauthorized sources.

Wellness That Spans All Devices

We are also providing tools that allow consumers to track overall health and wellness — whether they’re at home, in the gym, or on the road. The Samsung Health app, with more than 200 million active global users, is at the center of Samsung’s health experience across an extensive range of devices, from smartwatches to smartphones to tablets and even TVs. The app — a holistic health hub that consolidates fitness, wellness and health monitoring capabilities — records and compiles all kinds of health data and activity information, presents them intuitively and gives guidance on how to leverage that data to maximize results. The collected information is comprehensive, easy-to-understand and encourages positive action.

More connected devices mean a more seamless and enhanced user experience. While following guided workout or meditation programs on Samsung Smart TVs or Galaxy Tabs at home, for example, your calorie count and heart rate are tracked on your Galaxy Watch but viewed on the larger screen for easier access. Your Galaxy Watch also recognizes when you fall asleep and automatically dims lights and turns off air conditioners in response.

Open Collaboration Means Better Health Experiences

To give our users the best experience possible, we partner with other leaders in technology and wellness. We have built a strong foundation with our technology, and we welcome collaboration on our open ecosystem — one that often serves as an incubator for exciting new applications, services and features. In collaboration with Google, we co-developed Wear OS and Health Connect so that more users can join the unified platform and take advantage of new services and solutions to meet everyone’s needs.

Samsung works extensively with third-party experts, research centers and universities to further advance wearable tracking and insight capabilities, including the National Sleep Foundation for sleep, the University of California San Diego Sleep Laboratory and the University of California, San Francisco Hypoxia Research Laboratory for sleep and blood oxygen research and Louisiana State University, Pennington Biomedical Research Center and the University of Hawaii Cancer Center for BIA research, to name a few. We’re also committed to researching new ways our health solutions can be used in the medical field. In the coming months, we’re focused on developing more tools and resources that will support the medical community and give our users a more holistic view of their health records.

The Promising Future of Health and Wellness

In the last few years, many people around the world have adopted new habits and interests. For many, these include a greater awareness of physical, mental and sleep health. To meet this demand, Samsung is excited to continue expanding our Galaxy Watch lineup to better cater to the many unique needs of our users — especially those with a passion for the outdoors.

Our work, however, does not stop there. We are constantly innovating and investing in research and development and exploring new ways to work with our trusted partners. Through open collaboration and focused innovation, we will ensure our users are equipped with advanced technologies that empower them to better understand their own minds and bodies for a truly integrated, holistic experience of health and wellness.

We can’t wait for you to see what’s next. Please be sure to tune in to Galaxy Unpacked on August 10 at 9:00 a.m. ET on Samsung.com.

Health technology has prioritized constant exercise, breaking personal records and meeting daily physical goals. Over the past few years, we’ve seen a distinct cultural shift in how users approach health — people are redefining the norms in this space and are approaching health with a more holistic mindset. It’s less about calories burned and pounds lost and more about understanding their bodies — both physically and mentally — and prioritizing what’s most important to them, like healthy eating, proper sleep and exercise.

With this in mind, we’re continuing to build on the Galaxy Watch experience by focusing on one of my biggest priorities here at Samsung Electronics — delivering holistic health solutions for our users. For years, we’ve worked to deliver comprehensive health features that give our users the tools they need to achieve their goals and live healthy lifestyles.

We’re thrilled that Samsung and Google are working together to fulfill this need with a new solution, Health Connect. Just announced at Google I/O, developers now have access to a single set of APIs that enable the creation of fitness and health experiences. With the new Health Connect API, users will have a comprehensive set of controls to manage their health and fitness data across apps.

Health Connect supports more than 50 data types, such as exercise and sleep, as well as your vitals, such as heart rate and blood pressure. To ensure users have complete control of their data, Health Connect provides centralized privacy controls making it easy to give permission to the apps they want to share their on-device data.

And this isn’t just a proof of concept. We’re working alongside Google and other partners to realize the full benefits and potential of Health Connect. I’m excited to confirm that Samsung Health will also adopt Health Connect later this year. With users’ permission, this will enable app developers to take advantage of accurate and optimized data measured on Galaxy Watch for Samsung Health and use it in their apps as well.

We can’t wait to see how developers use Health Connect to bring tangible, holistic health benefits to Galaxy users. This new service is a massive step toward empowering users to experience the advantages of holistic living.

It’s been a busy year for us on the Samsung Health R&D team, but finally getting to share what we’ve been working on is one of my favorite parts of my job. Of course, this is just a fraction of everything going on behind the scenes. We can’t wait to share future updates on software and hardware experiences as we continue to lead the industry with next-generation wearables. Until then, have a happy I/O!

Just one year ago at Google I/O, I had the privilege to be a part of the announcement of the new unified platform of Wear OS, bringing the best of Google together with Samsung Electronics’ wearable software and hardware expertise. This was the cumulation of the long-standing partnership between Samsung and Google.

The release of Wear OS Powered by Samsung on the Galaxy Watch4 series was a momentous step for both companies and one that could only be accomplished through a truly collaborative partnership driven by our shared goals. When we merged our very own Tizen-based software platform with Google’s operating system, we knew that we could bring immense improvements to the overall user experience via Wear OS. It was — and still is — enabling various features like the Watch Face Studio, which helps both users and designers easily and intuitively create their own watch faces.

We’re bringing the best of our partnership forward, and together, we’re striving to create innovative experiences for Samsung Galaxy users. As such, Wear OS truly exemplifies the value of our collaboration. In fact, I think we can officially call Wear OS an undeniable success, as there are now more than three times as many active Wear OS devices as there were last year. We see this growth in our wearables as just the beginning of even greater things to come.

A Unified Platform, Centered on You

As a leader in the wearables market, Samsung understands the importance of unifying its wearable user experience with the wider Android community. As we develop these experiences, we listen to our users to make the improvements and upgrades that will support their day-to-day lives. The creation of Wear OS allowed Android developers to easily port code from their smartphone applications to create Wear OS apps. When Galaxy users download the Wear OS-compatible app from the Google Play Store, they can choose to automatically install the same app on their Galaxy Watch as well.

Samsung Galaxy users were the first to receive the latest features and benefits of the partnership and platform, culminating in our most significant wearable release to date — the Galaxy Watch4 series. It’s our job to make sure our customers not only enjoy the Galaxy experience but also feel empowered to make the changes that improve their health and overall wellness. Health Connect, announced today, is the result of our ongoing effort to deliver holistic health solutions for our users.

Expanding the Android Ecosystem

As we celebrate one year of collaboration and success, we’re opening up the ecosystem even further by bringing new experiences and benefits to Galaxy Watch4 users. This summer, I’m excited to share that Galaxy Watch4 users will be able to download Google Assistant to their devices, featuring faster and more natural voice interactions, enabling quick answers and on-the-go help.

We’re bringing enhanced functionality to our third-party partners, too. Soon, our users can control Spotify with Google Assistant and change songs on the fly using only their voice. But we’re not stopping there. Later this year, even more of Google apps and services will be optimized for Galaxy Watches, once again delivering the most comprehensive and seamless wearable device experience with Android smartphones.

We’ve just scratched the surface of the potential of our partnership with Google and what’s to come for our users. Galaxy Watch series devices are already loved by Android smartphone users thanks to our signature designs, rich watch-face ecosystem, and holistic health platform. I can’t wait to show you the next wave of innovations and ecosystem enhancements we’ve been working on for the series. Stay tuned for even more exciting news!

“At National Sleep Foundation, we think technology can help make it easier for some people to do important things during the day and night so they can be their Best Slept SelfTM.”

– John Lopos, CEO, National Sleep Foundation

In today’s busy world, it’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of our lives. We understand the benefits of prioritizing sleep, but the to-do list is never-ending and can cause our stress levels to go up.

This has been highlighted in a recent study from one of the world’s leading sleep organizations, the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), finding that during the pandemic, more people in the US have been sleeping longer, but the quality of that sleep has suffered.

In fact, the NSF believes one of the biggest challenges facing the public is the need to keep prioritizing sleep for our health and well-being. Embracing the continuously growing category of sleep technology can help. From smart environmental controls to smart sleep tracking, cutting-edge and evolving technologies are reinventing and improving the sleep experience for the public. Sleep technology is coming to the industry forefront as consumer brands — like Samsung — are prioritizing sleep-related capabilities within their products.

To find out more about the impact sleep technology can have on improving sleep health, we sat down with NSF CEO John Lopos to take a closer look at the intersection of sleep and technology.

Managing Routines and Tracking Progress

According to the NSF’s 2022 Sleep in America® Poll, there’s significant opportunity to improve daily activities that are associated with positive sleep and health outcomes. Eating your meals at a consistent time, the amount of physical activity completed in the day, and even the level of light exposure during the day and around bedtime, all impact sleep health and are manageable.

The NSF has specific guidelines and recommendations for positive sleep health, and this, Lopos said, is where “technology can be a thread that runs through our sleep experience. It helps us as a reminder, a facilitator, a communicator and a tracker, and can play a role in helping meet the NSF’s recommendations for better sleep — both while awake and asleep.”

Keep up with your daily workout routine with Galaxy Watch4 for a good night’s sleep

Controlling Your Sleep Environment

The right kind of light exposure during the day and night can make the difference between a good night’s sleep and a restless night. With nearly 60 percent of Americans saying they look at screens very often or somewhat often in the hour before bed or while in bed before sleep, it’s no wonder sleep quality is on the decline as light from phone, laptop and TV screens can significantly impact sleep.

And while technology can be the culprit when used inappropriately, like viewing screens too close to bedtime, it can also be part of the solution. “As people prepare for sleep, technology can help establish a sleep-friendly environment, help with a wind-down process that makes people feel more calm and relaxed, and then — and this is important — take its place in the background without disrupting a person’s sleep,” noted Lopos. A good example of this is the SmartThings functionality1 which allows users to program a pre-set time to turn off the bedroom TV and turn down the lights as part of a bedtime routine to help prepare them to sleep and create better sleeping conditions throughout the night.

Easily control your bedroom lightings with SmartThings to create a sleep-friendly environment

Adjusting Sleep Patterns

While sleep technology can play a meaningful role and help with long term health benefits, it can also help users adjust sleep patterns in the near term. Whether “springing forward” or “falling back”, Daylight Saving Time can have a significant impact on sleep. To help prepare, the NSF provides a number of tips including prioritizing natural daylight exposure, adjusting your clocks the night before the time change, and in the week leading up to a clock change, going to bed a little earlier each night to adjust your sleep schedule. The NSF also encourages the practice of relaxation techniques to help get a good night’s sleep every day, including during a time change disruption. The Galaxy Watch4 and the Samsung Health app can help with this by empowering users to manage their mindfulness through its breathing, meditation and stress monitoring capabilities.2

Monitor your stress level with Galaxy Watch4 and follow through the breathing guide to prepare your body for a better sleep

Better Sleep Today and Tomorrow From Samsung

It’s with this understanding of the power of sleep technology that Samsung has introduced features on the Galaxy Watch4 that are empowering users to track and meet wellness goals and help users work toward a better night’s sleep.

For example, the new sleep coaching program on the Galaxy Watch4 helps users achieve better sleep habits and achieve their sleep goals.2 The Samsung program assigns one of eight sleep symbol animals representing the user’s sleep type after tracking sleep patterns over seven days and completing two related sleep surveys. Then, it guides users through a four-to-five-week coaching program that includes missions, checklists, guidance and reports to support users as they work towards improving their sleep health.

With wearable devices now a regular part of many people’s lifestyles today, tracking and understanding elements of sleep are more common than ever — and the NSF wants to see even more access to sleep technology, believing that the sleep technology industry is going to ride new waves of collaboration and knowledge sharing. “We’re going to see even more integration across wearable and connected devices, lifestyle and wellness platforms and home goods,” Lopos affirmed. “People’s choices and feedback will confirm there’s lots of room for products and services that use sleep technology.”

The future of sleep technology is promising, and Samsung is committed to developing and enhancing their sleep offerings and capabilities with the sleep expertise of the National Sleep Foundation.

Samsung Electronics today announced a new update to the Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic, continuing its commitment to helping users reach their health and wellness goals and express their personal style. Users can expect new improvements like advanced interval training designed for any cyclist or runner, a new sleep coaching program and new body composition1 insights. Galaxy Watch4 users will now have even more ways to customize their look with upgraded watch faces, and a new line of stylish straps.

“We understand the growing needs of smartwatch users, and are committed to guiding our Galaxy Watch4 series community on their unique wellness journeys with our latest update,” said Janghyun Yoon, Executive Vice President and Head of Software Platform at Mobile eXperience Business, Samsung Electronics. “We are excited to continue this effort as part of our wider initiative to redefine holistic wellness through expanded experiences and new innovations.”

Motivation To Move

The latest body composition update gives users even more insight into their health progress. Samsung Health will also be providing body composition insights powered by Centr,2 a digital fitness program curated by Chris Hemsworth, to help users transform their health, fitness and mindset. In addition, Galaxy Watch4 users will receive a 30-day trial3 for full and unrestricted access to Centr.

Whether you’re just looking to get active or training for an upcoming race, Samsung’s new interval target feature for runners and cyclists lets them pre-set the duration, distance and number of sets for their workout. From there, Galaxy Watch4 guides them through a custom intensity training session with a series of high-intensity workouts interspersed with low-intensity workouts, making for an impactful and targeted workout every time.

We are continuing our collaboration with top-ranked apps4 like adidas Running and Strava to help users power through their exercise.

Work Towards a Better Night’s Sleep

Building on Galaxy Watch4’s robust sleep tracking capabilities, the new sleep coaching program helps users develop better sleep habits. By tracking sleep patterns over seven days and completing two related sleep surveys, the program assigns one of eight sleep symbol animals representing the user’s sleep type. Then, it will guide users through a four to five week coaching program that includes missions, checklists, sleep-related articles, meditation guidance and regular reports to support users as they work towards improving their sleep quality.

When it comes to waking up refreshed, a peaceful and quiet environment is key to achieving a healthy rest as well. Galaxy Watch4 recognizes when users fall asleep and automatically turns off Samsung SmartThings enabled lights to help create better sleeping conditions.5

Deeper Insights for a Healthier Heart

Combined with the advanced BioActive Sensor technology and Samsung Health Monitor app,6 Galaxy Watch4 measures both blood pressure7 (BP) and electrocardiogram8 (ECG), allowing users to monitor their heart health anytime and from anywhere. Since the first introduction in 2020, Samsung Health Monitor app is currently available in 43 markets globally, expanding to 11 more in March, including Canada, Vietnam and South Africa.

Greater Selection of Matching Straps and Watch Faces

The new Galaxy Watch4 update makes the wearable experience even better, from the inside out. Users can further customize their watch face with additional colors and digital clock fonts that make the watch truly their own. Also, new strap colors9 such as burgundy and cream, and the new fabric band and link bracelet will be available for a more personalized look.

Committed to Expanding Compatibility Within the Android Ecosystem

In 2021, Samsung and Google introduced co-developed Wear OS Powered by Samsung, bringing smoother connections across Android devices and seamless access to more apps via Google Play including Google Maps, Google Pay and YouTube Music. Coming soon through an additional update, users will be able to stream music over Wi-Fi or LTE from the YouTube Music app on their Galaxy Watch4.
Today’s younger generations, including Millennials and Generation Z (or ‘Gen Z’), are all about expressing their own unique personalities through the decoration of their diaries, their personal computing devices, their rooms – and even their phones. Since customization has become the norm these days, it is only natural that the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G has become the perfect vehicle for these generations, as the phone boasts a trendy design and allows users to differentiate their device through various methods of customization.

This October, Samsung Electronics provided even more ways for users to personalize their device with the unveiling of the Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition, which allows users to express their own taste through combining different design elements. Users can also take this one step further with the new Galaxy Watch4 Maison Kitsuné Edition and Galaxy Buds2 Maison Kitsuné Edition, which have been created in collaboration with the trendy fashion brand Kitsuné.

The multifaceted ways one can decorate their Galaxy Z Flip3 5G have been growing in popularity due to their unique nature and direct relation to the user’s taste. However, if you’re a beginner in the phone decoration game, Samsung Newsroom is here to introduce four top tips for decorating your Galaxy Z Flip3 5G.

1. Make Your Phone a Fashion Statement With Colors That Pop Out

Thanks to its visually appealing design and varied color swatches, Galaxy Z Flip3 5G is a fashion item and accessory within its own right. Just as a pop of color can totally transform your OOTD, the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G can also serve as a unique highlight item thanks to the exciting range of shades it is available in, as well as the range of colorful accessories available that allow you to match your mood or style of the day, whatever the season. You can even choose from a range of Galaxy Watch straps and Buds cases to take your accessory matching to the next level.

2. Showcase Your Style – As Well as Your Support – With Stickers

Decorating using stickers has always been a common way for users to customize their diaries or other personal items, such as laptops. Following the release of Galaxy Z Flip3 5G, more users than ever before have been using stickers to decorate their phones, as Galaxy Z Flip3 5G comes in a range of colors1 – including the chic Phantom Black shade, the warm Cream shade and the lovely Lavender shade – that allows it to serve as a canvas with which users can express their own individuality. Why not pick up some cute stickers to decorate your phone case and make it truly and uniquely your own?

Furthermore, in celebration of International Red Panda (Lesser Panda) Day this September 18th, Samsung worked with Da-seul Jeong (Aeso), the creator of the character Ompangi, to create lesser panda stickers for phone decoration. This collaboration was undertaken to raise awareness of the protection of endangered animals, a category that unfortunately lesser pandas are part of. Through using such cute yet important stickers as these, users can customize their phones not only to show their style, but also to actively show their support for all kinds of causes.

3. Make Your Phone Truly Your Own, From the Inside Out

Previously, a user has been able to show off their personal style by using their phone’s home screen. But with Galaxy Z Flip3 5G, you can take this one step further and apply your unique personality to your phone case, as well, thanks to the wide range of accessories launched by Samsung through collaboration with a variety of movies, cartoons, sports teams and even food brands.

By checking out the ‘Featured Items’ page for accessories on the Samsung Members app, you can take a look at all kinds of accessories that are available thanks to these diverse collaborations; Knotted Donuts, Disney, Jill Stuart, Dragon Ball and more are among the brands Samsung has collaborated with so far.2 From the wide range of collaboration accessories available, including smartphone ring grips, strap cases and clear case palettes, Samsung has created products that not only provide unique ways for users to express their style, but also ways for users to enjoy their phone with utmost convenience. These brand collaboration items are available for your Galaxy Watch, too, so that even when you aren’t holding up your smartphone, you are still able to showcase your true self whenever you want.

What’s more, the wider Cover Screen that comes with the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G provides even more screen real estate with which you can demonstrate your mood or interests – you can even decorate your screen with up to 15 images of your favorite animals, celebrities, characters or even your family members. While originally, the image shown on the Cover Screen would change automatically every time the screen was turned on, the recent One UI 4 update now lets you fix which images show up when according to your own preferences. Furthermore, a new color palette has been provided that lets you change your Home Screen, wallpaper and icons to suit your tastes, providing even more ways for you to express your own individuality.

4. Build Personality and Self-Expression Into the Very Design of Your Smartphone

If you are the type of person that enjoys a more minimal approach to decoration and prefers to leave the look of the phone the way it was when you first received it, then this custom-design approach might be perfect for you. Just because you enjoy a simple style doesn’t mean that your smartphone has to look like everyone else’s – and so with the Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition unveiled this October, you can express your own tastes through the phone’s design itself. The Bespoke Edition offers two frame colors, black and silver, as well as five panel colors, blue, yellow, pink, white and black, which come together to provide a total of 49 design combinations.

Furthermore, just as some might switch up their style by changing their phone case, you can even switch the colors of the front and rear panels of your phone as you please thanks to the Bespoke Upgrade Care service, and the Galaxy Watch4 Maison Kitsuné Edition and Galaxy Buds2 Maison Kitsuné Edition provide even more subtle nods to decoration thanks to their witty yet simple design.

If you are not sure which colors make the perfect match for you, you can try out various combinations in person at your local Samsung Experience Store, or try out the combinations virtually in 3D at Samsung.com.

1 Color swatches available for Galaxy Z Flip3 5G may vary by region or mobile operator.

At the Samsung Developer Conference 2021 (SDC21), Samsung Electronics is presenting its consumer-centric approach to innovation in partnership with its developer communities. In order to learn about the innovative collaborative technologies coming in the near future that are set to transform users’ lives by making them richer and more convenient, Samsung Newsroom sat down with SDC21 session speakers in order to hear more.

Voice Recognition With Bixby: More Convenient Than Touch

Artificial intelligence (AI) enhances the performance of all kinds of devices essential to our daily lives, including smartphones, tablets, TVs and more. In particular, AI-powered voice recognition facilitates more seamless interactions between these devices. Principal Engineer Joohwan Kim from the AI Client Development Group, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics, shares below how the Bixby voice assistant platform is set to enable more convenient experiences – using just your voice.

Q: What does the newly updated Bixby voice assistant platform look like?

Bixby aims to be the best voice interface able to control multiple Samsung devices using only a small amount of data. From this standpoint, we focused on providing a unique user experience that only Galaxy can provide when developing Samsung’s latest devices. For example, Galaxy Z Flip3 provides a Bixby function that allows users to utilize the Cover Screen, and Galaxy Watch4 series includes hands-free functionality.

Bixby has advanced in many ways as an AI platform, and, in terms of the engine, it supports Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) on-device. Because it processes users’ voices immediately from within the device itself, it is fast and secure in terms of privacy protection. Moreover, the development of Bixby Home Platform further expands the range of supported devices. What used to require multiple voice commands is now possible with only a single command that the device understands and performs accordingly.

Q: What are the areas of possible collaboration with developers around the world for the Bixby Platform?

There are several ways third-party developers can participate in Bixby. They can develop various voice services using Samsung’s AI engine in our smartphones, watches and Family Hub. This service, called a capsule, is provided by the Bixby Developer Center. We have also updated the developer tools to make debugging and natural language learning easier, and to allow convenient use of various UI components, all of which will be presented at SDC21.

The update being announced will make it possible to use for developers to harness multiple contexts when adding devices. Smarter device control has been made possible by Bixby Home Platform, an intelligent layer which sits between Bixby Voice – which provides natural language understanding and issues commands – and SmartThings’ Internet of Things (IoT) layer – which provides connection and operation between devices. Commands that previously had to be made individually for separate devices can now be more efficiently undertaken using the Bixby Home Platform. We are introducing this tool at SDC21 and currently working on providing it to third-party developers in the future.

Enjoy More of the Content You Love: Samsung Smart TV’s Tizen

In the past, TVs were evaluated only on their resolution and design, but given changing lifestyles and user demands, the kind of content a TV is able to provide has become paramount. Thanks to the Tizen platform, Samsung’s Smart TVs are able to provide users with a wide range of content able to suit any taste. Ju-hyun Choi, a Staff Engineer at the Software Development Group, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, describes below how Tizen has evolved to provide partners with the optimal environment in which they can develop with wide compatibility and stability.

Q: What are the new functions of Tizen Web Platform for Samsung Smart TV?

Through a powerful web standard technology called WebAssembly, high-performance web apps can now be developed on Samsung Smart TVs. For SDC21, we have prepared an upgrade plan that allows for the installation of the very latest web features for previously-released Smart TVs.

Q: The competitive edge held by Tizen-based display products has been strengthened thanks to the cooperation of partners from various fields. What are your future collaboration plans?

We are currently working on web-based cloud games, with the goal of allowing users to play the latest games on their Samsung Smart TV equipped with the Tizen platform – all without the latest consoles or expensive graphic cards. In order to achieve this, we are working closely with our current service partners. The Tizen platform, an open source-based operating system (OS), is open to everyone and we are working to provide the best possible development environment to developers that features a wide range of compatibility and development tools.

A Must for Innovative User Experiences: On-Device Personalized Neural Networks

Recently, on-device AI technology has been garnering attention. In the past, a high-performance cloud server capable of performing complex calculations was required in order to run AI-based apps, but when the neural network used in AI apps runs within the device, many advantages for users emerge. Jihoon Lee, an Engineer at the On-Device Lab at Samsung Research, explains below the role of on-device AI and cooperation with developers.

Q: On-device AI is considered a must for powerful and innovative consumer experiences. What kind of benefits will users enjoy from using it?

The biggest advantage offered by on-device AI is that the privacy of the users is maintained since all processing occurs on-device. Developers, too, will be able to provide services that are that much closer to the users, while also free from privacy concerns. For example, a camera app that harnesses facial recognition will not share sensitive data with a server if the AI is run on-device.

Another advantage is that on-device AI models can be used without an Internet connection or any mobile data consumption. For example, if a certain on-device AI model is required to be on constant low-power standby, the necessity of an Internet connection or data consumption could be a big limitation. With on-device AI, user application experiences are improved since there is no need to send data to a server and wait for results – resulting in reduced response times.

Thirdly, one is able to create custom AI directly on their device. Previously, the concept of personalizing the already-deployed AI firsthand was unexplored, as there was no framework to help train a deep-learning model on-device. Moving forward, we expect that NNTrainer, which we are presenting at SDC21, will play a big role in better recognizing a user’s face, their accent and even their pets to automatically create photo albums based on their furry friends – and more.

Q: In the future, what kind of synergies can be expected in this field through cooperation with the developers present at SDC?

Ultimately, we hope to bring users closer to AI through on-device training and personalization. We look forward to developers who attend SDC21’s sessions recognizing and utilizing NNTrainer in order to provide AI that is closer to users. Following such collaboration, NNTrainer, currently in its initial stages will become an even more mature framework. Since it is being developed as an open source, anyone can search for it and contribute directly.

Developing Watch Apps for Wear OS Powered by Samsung

Won-Hee Seo, a Staff Engineer at the Strategic Partner R&D Group, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics, below introduces the new developer tools and benefits of creating watch apps for the Wear OS Powered by Samsung platform, running on the Galaxy Watch4 series.

Q: It’s now easier to develop a great watch app for the Wear OS ecosystem. What are some new helpful experiences that will be available to users?

With the Galaxy Watch4 series, the most loved and used watch apps and services have been optimized for the new Wear OS Powered by Samsung platform. In addition to Samsung and Google services and apps such as Google Maps and YouTube Music, users will also have access to their favorite watch apps available for download in the Google Play Store. In particular, health-related apps, including Sleep Cycle, are starting to launch and are growing in popularity.

Many developer partners have started to work with the new tools available for the Wear OS platform, which has led to the release of many useful apps.

Moreover, we have launched Watch Face Studio, a new developer tool that makes it easy to design watch faces. Thanks to this tool, designers and developers will be able to create more watch faces, which provides users with a greater variety of watch faces to choose from, helping them to further personalize their watch with their own tastes.

Q: Throughout this session, you discussed the development of new watch apps with other developers. What was at the center of the discussion?

A total of four watch-related sessions were arranged for SDC21: one Highlight Session and three Tech Talk Sessions. They provide all the necessary information for developers, such as the developer guide, in order to help them more easily create diverse watch apps and services. In order to help stimulate the watch face market, a session was also added to SDC21 to provide a detailed introduction to the Watch Face Studio tool that is set to allow designers and developers to easily design and create faces.

Built for the next era of the smartwatch experience, the Galaxy Watch4 series is the latest line of Galaxy smartwatches with a suite of advanced features made to fit you. From a variety of straps and customizable watch faces to a host of diverse features and apps to choose from, you can personalize your Galaxy Watch4 series to be just as unique as you are. But it doesn’t stop there. Now, Galaxy Watch4 users can take customization to the next level and access new features with a software update, available from October 20th.1

Here is a look at some of the new features coming to the Galaxy Watch4 series.

Your Watch Face, Exactly How You Want It

With more watch faces and complications to choose from, the latest update enables you to build the perfect watch face to match your personality and fit into your lifestyle.

Now, you have four new faces to choose from – so you can see whatever information you tend to check the most with just a glance at your wrist. If you’re committed to smashing your fitness goals – or just want to keep an eye on your health stats – you can customize the new Info Brick watch face with the stats you care about the most, from heart rate and stress to daily activity status. Or, you can choose a watch face that displays in-depth weather forecast, a basic dashboard or live wallpapers inspired by Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3 – all of which can also be customized.

Complications are a great way to quickly access important information at-a-glance and launch the apps you use the most. Now, you can mix and match up to four complications to display on your Animals watch face – from battery life to reminders, messages, your step count and much more. You can now also choose a moving GIF for your My Photo+ watch face, rather than just a static photo, to create more exciting and lively watch faces that are completely unique to you.

The update also brings more playful animations to your Steps Challenge watch face for keeping track of how you’re doing in your step challenge – that will help keep you feeling motivated. An animated bear will follow you for every step of your competition – from stretching before you start a challenge to cheering when you win.

More Convenience With Added Gesture Control

Gesture controls enable you to do more using simple hand movements. In addition to moving your forearm up and down twice to receive calls and rotating your wrist twice to reject calls or dismiss alarms, the update includes a new hand motion that can act as a helpful shortcut to activate a chosen app or feature. By doing a simple ‘knock, knock’ motion with your wrist, you can open a pre-selected app, open the list of workouts, turn on a light or even create a new reminder. You can access an app or feature – your favorite or most frequently used – all without lifting a finger or pressing a button.

Keep Yourself or Loved Ones Safe With Improved Fall Detection

First introduced to the Galaxy smartwatch line in 2020, Fall Detection was capable of recognizing if the wearer had fallen down during exercise. Now, on the Galaxy Watch4 you can opt to adjust the sensitivity so that it is capable of detecting a fall even when you’re standing still.2 Plus, Galaxy Watch4 can send out an SOS notification to up to four pre-selected contacts – helping you to take care of yourself and your loved ones.

On top of that, you can enjoy a 60-day free Strava subscription – just for Galaxy Watch users.3 Get the most out of your Galaxy Watch with the Strava app. Train smarter and stay motivated with enhanced workout analysis, training plans, safety features and more.

1 Availability may vary by market or operator. The update will initially be available on Bluetooth versions of the Galaxy Watch4 series and will roll out to LTE versions shortly thereafter. Requires the latest version of the Galaxy Wearable app and Galaxy Watch4 plugin.

2 To notify an emergency contact, a network connection is required. GPS accuracy may be affected by obstructions to the satellite signal, such as buildings.

3 Strava’s 60-day free subscription is available on previous Galaxy Watch models (Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Watch Active2 and Galaxy Watch3) as well as Galaxy Watch4. Some users may not be eligible for this trial if they have previously signed up for two or more Strava trial offers, or if they were a subscriber within the last six months. Strava service availability varies by market.

▲ The Galaxy Watch4 series features two models: the Galaxy Watch4, featuring a minimalistic design, and the Galaxy Watch4 Classic, which features a ring-shaped bezel. The 40mm Galaxy Watch4 was used to create this guide.

A watch is an item that spends a long time on the user’s wrist. This means that a design that suits any situation or style is a must, whether it’s a casual day or a formal setting. For the Galaxy Watch4, Samsung Electronics applied a modern, stylish design with a ring shape, which is the most familiar watch shape.

The feeling of comfort was kicked up a notch with the Galaxy Watch4’s profile. Compared to the previous version, the watch has not only gotten thinner, but it also comes with a flat display that sits flush against the user’s wrist. The smooth form, created by the harmony of the screen, body and strap, amplifies the device’s ‘clean’ design. The matte texture of the device adds to its modern vibe.

When you want to clearly express your uniqueness, the simplest and most effective way is to change the watch strap. Samsung offers a colorful lineup of straps, so you can create your own unique style.

It’s also very easy to swap a strap. Simply slide the band’s spring bar to one side to remove the strap. To replace it, simply place the side of the strap without the spring bar into the lug and slide the spring bar inward to connect it. Unlike previous versions, in which strap size differed by lineup, the Galaxy Watch4 series’ straps are all standardized to 20mm.

[Question 2] How has the Galaxy Watch4’s Wearable Ecosystem expanded?

Featuring One UI Watch and Wear OS Powered by Samsung, the Galaxy Watch4 functions like it’s one with your smartphone

Because we use up to dozens of apps per day, the Galaxy Watch4 features even more enriched apps with a new unified smartwatch platform in collaboration with various industry leading partners. Tap the Google Play icon on the home screen and you’ll see various categories of apps, including ‘Applications from Your Phone’, ‘Recommended Applications’, ‘Audio Streaming’, ‘Clock Applications’ and more. You can quickly find the app you’d like to use.

▲ When downloading an app that connects to your Galaxy Watch4, your Galaxy Watch4’s name will appear alongside your smartphone’s name under the ‘Install’ button. When both boxes for the two devices are checked, the app will be downloaded on both devices at the same time.

The Galaxy Watch4 series comes with a new OS and One UI Watch, which adds more seamless experiences to the Galaxy ecosystem. When users install an app on their smartphone that is compatible with the Galaxy Watch4, the app will be automatically installed on their Galaxy Watch4 as well. If users block a call or message on their Galaxy Watch4, that call or message will be automatically blocked on their smartphone too. As such, changing app settings on one device will immediately cause the same changes to be made on the other device, creating a consistent user experience.

The Galaxy Watch4 also offers users a seamless camera experience. When users tap the icon for the app that acts as a camera shutter, their smartphone’s camera app will automatically open. The watch can be used as a viewfinder for the camera, which comes in handy when taking pictures from multiple angles. For example, let’s say you have to take a group photo with your Galaxy Z Flip3. Simply place the device down and use the camera viewfinder on your Galaxy Watch4 to frame your photo. After that, simply tap the button on your smartwatch to take a nice, natural photo.

Want to easily control music or videos that are being played on your smartphone? The Galaxy Watch4’s Media Control feature allows you to do just that. To access it, head to the Settings menu in the Galaxy Wearable app on your smartphone and choose Display. Once there, turn on the ‘Automatically open the media control’ feature. Once you’ve done that, the content you play on your smartphone will simultaneously play on your watch’s screen. You can also use this feature to change songs or adjust the volume.

[Question 3] How can I customize my Galaxy Watch4?

Make your watch your own with custom-made watch faces and detailed fitness data

Whether it’s with the messaging application, calendar or media player, the Galaxy Watch4 is there for your every moment. The device can be customized to fit your lifestyle. When you swipe left from the main screen, various tiles will appear. Tapping on that screen for a few seconds will enable editing. It’s very useful because you can arrange the order of the widgets by prioritizing the most frequently used ones in your daily life and instantly removing the ones you don’t use.

▲ If you choose the Galaxy Watch4’s AR Emoji watch face, you can use an emoji that is based on your face as your watch face. You can make your watch truly your own by customizing your emoji’s hair, outfit, accessories and more.

The watch face that users choose clearly expresses their unique characteristics. Tap on the home screen for a few seconds and you’ll see various types of watch faces appear. You can choose one of the premade options or tap the ‘Get started’ button to customize the watch face’s style, colors, complications and more. If you’d like to edit your selection more closely, you can open the Galaxy Wearable app on your smartphone and continue editing on a larger screen.

Many users who enjoy playing various sports and are interested in health know how important body composition is. Samsung has reflected this need by introducing a new Samsung BioActive Sensor in the Galaxy Watch4. Users can instantly measure various health indicators with a single sensor on their wrist.

To use it, launch the ‘Body Composition’ tile and tap the button to start measuring. Then, place your middle and ring fingers on the two buttons on the side to check your skeletal muscle mass, basal metabolic rate, body water percentage, total body fat and more. It’s good to not only understand your body on a deeper level, but also set up goals and manage your health by consistently taking measurements.

If you’d like to better understand your body and monitor your condition, then it would be a good idea to take a look at the Sleep function. If you go to bed wearing the Galaxy Watch4 with the Blood Oxygen During Sleep feature turned on, you’ll be provided with a detailed graph of your blood oxygen levels while you were asleep. If you snore often, then the Snoring Detection feature will come in handy as well. If you go to sleep with your watch with the feature turned on, the watch will not only detect and measure your snores, but it can also record them as well. Using this comprehensive health management feature, you can record your daily physical activities and keep yourself motivated.

[Question 4] Can the Galaxy Watch4 keep up with my busy day?

Usability has been significantly enhanced with processor, display and memory upgrades.

In order to support users’ various lifestyles, a smartwatch needs to offer a smooth and error-free user experience. The Galaxy Watch4 series delivers seamless usability by offering 10x better GPU performance than the previous version, as well as 20 percent better CPU performance and 50 percent better RAM. When scrolling from top to bottom or swiping right from the home screen, and even when using multiple apps at the same time, the watch functions smoothly without any glitches.

Because we look at our watch’s screen more than a dozen times per day, the resolution and definition of the display are important as well. The resolutions of the 44mm Galaxy Watch4 model and the 46mm Galaxy Watch4 Classic model have been enhanced to 450 x 450 pixels to offer a differentiated experience. In addition, the built-in memory for each model has been expanded to 16GB to enable users to store as many apps, songs and photos as they like. The watches support fast charging as well, which means that a full charge provides up to 40 hours of use, while a 30-minute charge provides up to 10 hours of use. With the fast-charging feature, you can use your watch all day without worrying about it turning off.

[Question 5] Can the Galaxy Buds2 accentuate your look like a piece of jewelry?

The lightest model in the Buds series yet, the Galaxy Buds2 fit perfectly in your ears with their compact size.

The Galaxy Buds2 have become even smaller and lighter to suit users’ dynamic lifestyles. Each earbud weighs just five grams, which makes the Galaxy Buds2 the lightest model in the Buds series so far. If you look at the glossy white case while it’s closed, you’ll notice a thin line of color that matches that of the earbuds. Unlike the exterior, the interior of the case is made of a matte material, accentuating the earbuds’ modern charm.

[Question 6] Are the Galaxy Buds2 comfortable for long-term use?

With multiple ear tip sizes and an earbud fit test, the Galaxy Buds2 are designed to fit snugly in your ears.

When you are traveling long distances or would like to concentrate on something, earphones are essential. The most important aspect when it comes to earphones is comfort. After all, if you’re wearing them all day, you want them to be as comfortable as possible. Samsung offers a total of three earbud tip sizes with the Galaxy Buds2, so you can choose the size that fits your ears just right.

After choosing the right ear tip size, it’s time to test them out. This is important because if you don’t wear earbuds properly, outside noise might be able to seep through. The Galaxy Wearable app’s Earbud Fit Test feature makes it easy to ensure a proper fit. Once you put the earbuds on and start the test, you’ll hear a short song. If the fit isn’t right, then the app will tell you to “Try adjusting your (left or right) earbud or changing the ear tip,” and it will show you how to put them on again. You can adjust the fit by changing the ear tip size or pushing the earbuds further into your ears. When the earbuds fit well, the words “Good fit” will appear on the screen. You can then enjoy the best sound quality.

[Question 7] From enjoying content to voice calls, how much has Samsung enhanced the Galaxy Buds2’s performance?

Utilize colorful features that can help you concentrate on sounds wherever you are.

Sometimes, when you’re taking public transportation or walking outside, you just want to focus on your music. The Galaxy Buds2’s Active Noise Cancellation feature blocks unnecessary noises to allow users to focus on listening to their favorite content. Using the Active Noise Cancellation feature when next to a busy road makes it possible to enjoy an immersive experience.

With the Galaxy Buds2, there’s no need to talk louder when making a call in a noisy place. That’s because the Galaxy Buds2 feature three microphones and a voice pick-up unit that remove noise so the person on the other line can hear you clearly even when you’re talking in a place with lots of wind or echo. If you usually use the Active Noise Cancellation feature, you can choose to turn it off if you don’t want to use it while talking on the phone. Open the Galaxy Wearable app on your smartphone and turn on ‘Use Ambient sound during calls’. If you usually use the Active Noise Cancellation feature, the earbuds will switch to ambient sound mode to enhance your phone calls with sound that feels natural.

For those times when you want to listen to music while working or when you don’t want to miss an announcement when using public transportation, it’s a good idea to customize your earbuds’ noise controls and decide just how much ambient noise you’d like to hear. If you head to ‘Earbuds settings’ in the Galaxy Wearable app on your smartphone, you’ll be able to calibrate how much ambient sound you’d like to hear through each earbud. You can also adjust the softness or clearness of the ambient sound, which can be useful adjustments for different situations.

There’s also a feature that allows you to adjust the volume to your liking while watching content. To do so, go to the Galaxy Wearable app’s Labs menu and turn on ‘Double tap earbud edge’. To lower the volume, double tap the edge of the left earbud. To raise the volume, double tap the edge of the right earbud. This will be easier to understand if you imagine yourself tapping on the tragus in the inner part of your ear. This feature can be useful throughout your day, as it allows you to easily control the volume without taking out your smartphone.

[Question 8] How has Samsung strengthened the Galaxy Buds2’s connectivity within the Galaxy Ecosystem?

Enjoy smooth transitions between devices with Auto Switch, and connect the Galaxy Buds2 to the Galaxy Watch4 to customize settings.

If you use various Galaxy devices, such as a smartphone, smartwatch and tablet, then Auto Switch, which allows the Galaxy Buds2 to automatically alternate between devices, can be very useful. With this feature, the Galaxy Buds2 can be instantly paired to each Galaxy device without having to go through the hassle of connecting or disconnecting the earbuds from each one. Let’s say you were watching a lecture on your Galaxy Tab when someone called you on your Galaxy Z Flip3. In that case, your Galaxy Buds2 would automatically switch to your smartphone to allow you to take the call. After the call, the earbuds would switch back to being connected to the Galaxy Tab, so you could continue what you were doing without interruption.

You can also adjust Galaxy Buds2 settings on your Galaxy Watch4. Simply launch the Galaxy Watch4’s Buds Controller app and you’ll be able to view your earbuds’ status and adjust various settings. You can turn noise cancellation on or off, change touch control settings, and even view how much battery your earbuds have at any time, allowing you to enjoy a smarter wearable experience.

Samsung Electronics today announced that a recent study published in the leading medical journal Frontiers in Neurology. The study has shown that blood pressure monitoring on Galaxy Watch could help patients with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) effectively manage orthostatic hypotension (OH), a form of low blood pressure caused by blood vessels failing to constrict.

OH is common among PD patients and can increase the risk of falls for those in the elderly age group and may already have existing cardiovascular diseases. Measuring blood pressure (BP) frequently can help detect critical fluctuations for diagnosing and managing PD.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch3, Galaxy Watch Active2 and the latest Galaxy Watch4 feature sophisticated sensors that can monitor BP through pulse wave analysis, which is tracked with Heart Rate Monitoring sensors. Users can closely monitor their blood pressure and other vitals in the Samsung Health Monitor app and share them with medical professionals in a PDF file format during consultations.1

A research team at the Samsung Medical Center, led by Dr. Jin Whan Cho and Dr. Jong Hyeon Ahn, compared BP measurements collected by the Galaxy Watch3 with those measured by a sphygmomanometer to compare accuracy. The test found that using Galaxy Watch3—which is more portable and convenient than a conventional sphygmomanometer—allows PD patients to measure their BP wherever and whenever they need to, and easily track any BP fluctuation.

The test was conducted on 56 patients—with a mean age of 66.9—with a sphygmomanometer reference on one arm and the Galaxy Watch3 on the other. Each patient had their BP measured with both devices three times.

The findings show that BP measured by both the Galaxy Watch and the sphygmomanometer were comparable. The mean and standard deviation of the differences were 0.4 ± 4.6 mmHg for systolic BP (SBP) and 1.1 ± 4.5 mmHg for diastolic BP (DBP). The correlation coefficient (r) between the two devices was 0.967 for SBP and 0.916 for DBP. The closer the correlation coefficient is to 1, the more the two devices track each other.

The research team said, “Orthostatic hypotension is a common and challenging symptom that affects people living with PD. But it is hard to screen just by observing symptoms, and the problem may go undetected when measuring BP.” The team added, “If we could use a smartwatch to measure patients’ BP regularly and detect potential issues at an early stage, it would really help treat and manage PD.”

The study, led by Dr. Cho and Dr. Ahn’s research team, titled “Validation of Blood Pressure Measurement Using a Smartwatch in Patients With Parkinson’s Disease”, was published in the latest issue of the leading medical journal Frontiers in Neurology.

Blood pressure monitoring is currently offered through the Samsung Health Monitor app2 available in Austria, Australia, Brazil, Belgium, Bulgaria, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, the UAE, and the UK.

1 To ensure accuracy, users should calibrate their device every four weeks with a traditional blood pressure cuff. The Samsung Health Monitor app cannot diagnose hypertension, other conditions, or check for signs of a heart attack. This app should only be used for measuring for ages 22 and above. It is not meant to replace traditional methods of diagnosis or treatment by a qualified healthcare professional.

2 Requires Samsung Galaxy Smartphone with Android 7 or later, and Samsung Health Monitor app which is available only at the Samsung Galaxy app store. Due to local restrictions in acquiring approval/registration as a medical device, Samsung Health Monitor app only works on watches and smartphones purchased in the markets where service is currently available.

Today’s lifestyle choices, as diverse as they all are, have one thing in common: self-expression. From what we wear to the life we live – even to the devices we buy – putting our personality first and foremost is always of utmost importance.

Following the changes in such trends, smartwatches have grown to be part of this self-expression movement thanks to their nature as a device that goes beyond its role as a mere accessory. Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Watch4 series is no exception to this. Its perfectly rounded shape continues the unique identity of the Galaxy Watch series, and the broad selection of straps available caters to all kinds of personalities and preferences. With a clear identity as well as offering unique self-expression, Galaxy Watch4 has truly been designed for the modern user.

“We used the perfect shape of a circle as our core concept in order to capture the originality of the Galaxy Watch and preserve its identity as a watch.” (Insik Chung, Galaxy Watch4 Designer)

One Core Element

The circle is the founding identity of the Samsung Galaxy Watch. A simple yet polished form resembling most traditional watches, the circle is a core design element that has been incorporated into the Galaxy Watch series from the very beginning.

Samsung’s designers worked hard to create this user-friendly structure with all the basic watch-like qualities that avoids anything complicated or distracting in order to develop a truly differentiated product. By removing any unnecessary decorative elements and focusing on the true essence of the device, the Galaxy Watch series designers managed to create a watch design that is not only timeless, but is also the perfect addition to any user’s wrist.

A Singular Identity

The Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic both share a single design language and therefore a consistent identity. Based on the essence of the circle, a seamless line from the screen to the body frame and to the strap has been applied to both models based on the concept of the circle, and instead of pursuing differentiated design ideas such as ‘minimalistic’ or ‘classic’ as before, Samsung’s designers truly honed in on the concept of the circle to create a design that is bolder and more unique. Thanks to a refined form that truly captures the essence of the Galaxy Watch, both Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic are united with one singular design identity.

“The way the body frame sits around the screen makes on-screen information more noticeable, and the smartwatch’s seamless strap provides a comfortable fit.” (Juan Lee, Designer, Kenzi Yamauchi, Designer)

Seamless Aesthetic, Seamless Fit

The Galaxy Watch4’s strap connects seamlessly and effortlessly to the watch body. Samsung’s designers created a silhouette that serves as an outline for the circular frame in order to emphasize the screen better. The body line design is not only crucial for aesthetic appeal, but also for providing optimal fit for users. The designers carried out countless mock-up trials in order to create the slimmest and most flexible line design possible that also offers users a natural and snug fit on their wrists.

Meticulous Design

A smartwatch can help a user track their movement and other health-related information as it is so closely placed in contact with its user’s body. Samsung’s designers focused on his ‘monitoring’ aspect of the smartwatch and considered several ways to improve the watch’s fit and stability for this purpose. The result of this development process is the H-Wing strap. The Galaxy Watch4 series’ H-Wing strap connects with the screen and ensures that the sensors underneath the watch are attached firmly to the user’s wrist. This security provides a stable, ergonomic fit with greater accuracy for tasks such as measuring the user’s heart rate or ECG.

Effective Materials

Samsung’s designers made sure to produce a strap for the Galaxy Watch4 series that is able to meet a user’s expectation in terms of aesthetic as well as functionality. The resulting Hybrid Leather Band was designed meticulously with both these standards in mind: its exterior is made of leather, while the interior of the strap is made with sweat-resistant Fluoroelastomer (FKM). While the exterior and the interior sides of the strap are made from different materials, they come together seamlessly thanks to a unified color scheme.

“The strap’s material and colors reflect the characteristics of users who desire change.” (Jungsang Park, Designer, Sangsoo Lee, Designer)

Diverse Choices

Color is a design element that allows for self-expression while also bringing a product to life. Samsung’s designers made sure to develop a variety of strap colors based on the latest global trends so that users can complete their look in style.

The body frame of Galaxy Watch4 comes in black, green, silver and pink gold, while Galaxy Watch4 Classic comes in the classic shades of black and silver. The extensive strap selection for the series comes in a variety of colors that complement both the watch bodies and their function, including the Sport Band, Ridge Sport Band, Extreme Sport Band, Hybrid Leather Band and the Milanese Band. These straps can be purchased separately so that users can pick and choose their straps as they see fit.

Your Style, Your Way

A smartwatch is the perfect way to showcase your own personal style and aesthetic, a subtle yet powerful means of self-expression given that it is a device that goes everywhere with its user. Galaxy Watch4 users can select and combine the body and strap components as they wish in order to build their own, unique smartwatch, and in order to cater to diverse needs, a variety of options with over 1,000 potential combinations1 is available. The Galaxy Watch4 series has been designed to lets users fully express themselves in the same way they might with their smartphone’s case.

A Gift for Oneself

The basic concept of respecting every user’s individuality is incorporated into every aspect of the user’s Galaxy Watch4 experience – right from when they first purchase it. Instead of having a predetermined combination of frame or strap, users can choose and combine the different body frame colors and strap types through the Galaxy Watch Design Studio when purchasing online. Beyond just a smartwatch, the Galaxy Watch4 truly is a gift to oneself that reflects our true values.

A truly great design maintains its value for long periods of time and delivers better experiences to users by reflecting the zeitgeist and preferences of the users that is designed for. In creating the design for the Galaxy Watch4 series, Samsung’s designers focused just on the essence of the product and instilled it with those values of self-expression that are so important to today’s users. The Galaxy Watch4 embraces individuality, enabling it to become a beloved companion in a user’s daily life to both help them and accompany them wherever they may go.

At its Galaxy Unpacked event on August 11, Samsung Electronics unveiled its latest innovations- Galaxy Z Fold3, Z Flip3 and Galaxy Watch4 series, setting the new standard for mobile experiences.

In order for users to get to know these groundbreaking products better, Samsung Newsroom spoke with several Samsung executives to learn about innovations of the latest Galaxy devices and the strategy that went into their development. Check out some of the key insights, the interview highlights and the full interview video below.

Q: What is the target sales goal for the Galaxy Z series and what steps are you taking to reach it?

Answered by Bryan Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of Strategic Marketing, Mobile Communications Business

Many surveys have shown us that the market demand for foldable smartphones is growing, in fact up to 6.5 million units in 2021,1 triple the demand of last year. Samsung is positioned to be the leading and foremost provider, set to drive volume beyond the market demand.

With the new Galaxy Z series, we’re bringing foldable innovations to more consumers by breaking down the barriers of entry with our pricings. I am confident that with our new Galaxy Z series, we can drive record high demand for foldables, inviting even more consumers to enjoy this new way of using their smartphone.

Q: How are you addressing durability concerns with the new Galaxy Z series? Are the new foldables really durable enough for everyday extended use?

Answered by Dr. Won-Joon Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of the Flagship Product R&D Team, Mobile Communications Business

For the new foldable series, we had a big mission: the durability, so that our customers can use the devices with peace of mind for everyday extended use. To do that, we started from scratch in order to make the ‘impossible’, ‘possible’.

Water resistance and increased durability are the key features we focused on for our new foldable devices so that users can take their devices with them anywhere with confidence, whether they are breaking a sweat at the gym or relaxing by the pool.

We are able to deliver the world’s first water resistant foldable smartphones by implementing an innovative sealing design that our engineering team has come up with. We’ve also increased the durability of our flexible displays by about 80 percent compared to the previous foldables by redesigning the layer structure and using a new protective film.

Furthermore, the outer body of the Galaxy Z series is protected by Armor Aluminum and Gorilla Glass Victus, our strongest aluminum frame and toughest glass material yet. Thanks to all these innovations, we believe that foldable smartphones such as the Galaxy Z series are set to become the new standard in mobile devices as the category turns mainstream.

Q: What are you most excited about with Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3?

Answered by Patrick Chomet, Executive Vice President and Head of Customer Experience, Mobile Communications Business

We designed the new Galaxy Z series to address consumers’ needs in every moment – capturing, communicating, sharing and expressing. One of my favorite features is the hands-free selfie with the Galaxy Z Flip3. Continuing our collaboration with Google, we made the video call experience even better. Within Google Duo, the camera automatically zooms in and out to fit everyone into the frame. With HD quality, our premium camera system and the devices’ amazing displays, your hands-free video calls are vivid, clear and more enjoyable.

Furthermore, for Galaxy Z Fold3, we have enabled the S Pen experience with our Wacom partnership, so that users can write down on its large screen for the first time on foldables. You can even watch content on the top half of your screen and take notes with your S Pen on the bottom half.

Q: Is there enough market demand for foldable devices? What do you think consumers want from the new Galaxy Z series?

Answered by Drew Blackard, Vice President of Mobile Product Management, Samsung Electronics America

Samsung pioneered the foldable form factor because we believe in the amazing potential for this technology to, quite literally, open up new experiences. People really appreciate their phones’ unique form factor and the flexibility it provides to multitask, or enjoy their favorite shows, on a large, portable screen. These experiences are a big reason why foldable users love their devices, and nearly 9 out of 10 Galaxy Z series users want to buy another foldable as their next device.2 In fact, the foldable market is set to triple in size this year over last – and Samsung is a primary driver of that growth.

We have improved our latest Galaxy Z series devices to address the biggest consumer needs and wants. Consumers told us that they were looking for increased durability, new and improved displays, S Pen functionality and more apps tailored specifically to the foldable experience. With our latest Galaxy Z series devices, we’re delivering all that and more in sleeker devices – at even lower price points.

Q: What improvements did you make to optimize the S Pen experience for the foldable device?

Answered by Nobu Ide, President and CEO of Wacom.

Samsung and Wacom have been working closely together for over 10 years on the S Pen, always innovating to deliver unique and differentiated experiences to Galaxy users.

For the foldable device, we have renewed the S Pen technology to make it more optimized and more special for the new product. Not only does it offer fantastic performance such as less latency and super precision, it also comes with a finely tuned-up pen tip structure to deliver excellent drawing and writing experiences on the foldable screen surface.

We are so honored to see our technologies continue to be used in Galaxy devices and will keep supporting the expanded Galaxy portfolio with the S Pen moving forward.

Q: Why would a user buy a Galaxy Watch4 over other health-specific smartwatches?

Answered by Dr. Janghyun Yoon, Executive Vice President and Head of Software Platform Team, Mobile Communications Business

The Galaxy Watch series has been empowering millions of users to access detailed insights into their overall health for years. Now, we have equipped our new Galaxy Watch4 with our most advanced sensor technology ever in order to deliver our most comprehensive health experience yet.

We reduced the size of the health sensors to create a thinner and slimmer design. While smaller sensors typically lessen the accuracy of health measurements, we developed an entirely new algorithm to ensure we didn’t make any compromises.

On top of that, we engineered the Samsung BioActive Sensor (3-in-1 sensor) that enables three powerful health metrics – Optical Heart Rate Sensor (PPG), Electrical Heart Sensor (ECG) and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Sensor (BIA) – to run on just one chipset. This means that Galaxy Watch4 users can monitor their Blood Pressure, detect an AFib irregular heartbeat, measure their Blood Oxygen level, and even calculate their Body Composition, anytime, anywhere.

Furthermore, Galaxy Watch4 is the first Galaxy Watch to offer Body Composition analysis, a measurement that instantly provides a complete snapshot of your overall fitness. Together, these features offer users a more holistic and helpful understanding of their health.

Q: Why did Samsung change the OS for Galaxy Watch, and what does this actually mean for users?

Answered by Dr. Janghyun Yoon, Executive Vice President and Head of Software Platform Team, Mobile Communications Business

Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic will usher in an exciting new era for smartwatch innovation. We developed a new, unified operating system, built jointly with Google. And together with One UI Watch, this has created a more seamless and deeply connected Galaxy experience across our smartwatches and smartphones.

At the same time, we have been working with multiple partners to develop an immense ecosystem of apps that can deliver a richer experience to users. On top of all this, we also boosted Galaxy Watch4’s performance and developed sophisticated sensor technology that fully integrates with industry-leading partner apps, such as Strava.

What this means for users is that they can benefit from multi-dimensional insights about their overall health that help them to live healthier and feel better, every day.

Q: What are the business opportunities or enterprise use cases of the new Galaxy Z series and Watch4 series?

Answered by Hamshy Raveendran, Head of Mobile B2B Product Management and Go-To-Market, Samsung Electronics America

From the flexibility of multi-tasking on a large screen to enhanced durability thanks to our new Armor Aluminum and Gorilla Glass Victus, the Galaxy Z series gives business users the next-level performance they can only get from a Galaxy flagship foldable.

For example – you can review a client’s portfolio or patient chart, video chat with your team and send an email, all at the same time. With Samsung DeX, you can connect your Galaxy Z series device to a monitor for a desktop-like experience, or use the device as a second, large screen. And now on the Galaxy Z Fold3, you can use an S Pen to mark up or sign documents. The Galaxy Z series devices of course come with Samsung’s signature defense-grade security platform Knox to protect you and your data from the chip level up. You can rest assured that all your sensitive business information is safe – from confidential contracts to patient and client data.

Our Galaxy Watch4 series also unlocks new opportunities for businesses thanks to the devices’ robust and holistic wellness features. With its advanced health features, our latest Galaxy Watch4 series can help businesses enhance employees’ wellness, while also fostering a workplace culture that prioritizes wellbeing. We are proud to continue to offer innovations built to help our B2B customers become more mobile and flexible, and ultimately, to support their success.

Q: What are Samsung’s mobile sustainability vision and goals?

Answered by Stephanie Choi, Senior Vice President and Head of Marketing Team, Mobile Communications Business

We’re excited to announce Galaxy for the Planet, our commitment to helping build a more sustainable future across our business and product lifecycles. By 2025, we are set to achieve zero standby power consumption for our smartphone chargers, incorporate recycled material in all our mobile products, and eliminate the use of plastics in our packaging. We will also divert all waste from landfill sites across our manufacturing facilities by then.

This is a small but crucial step in our sustainability journey. We believe that achieving these goals will bring us one step closer to creating a greener future. Samsung is committed to creating a more sustainable world.

Samsung Electronics today announced the Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic — marking a new era for smartwatch innovation. They are the first smartwatches to feature the new Wear OS Powered by Samsung, built jointly with Google, and are equipped with One UI Watch, Samsung’s most intuitive user interface yet. The Galaxy Watch4 series is bolstered with advanced hardware performance and delivers a more seamless and connected user experience than ever before. These new devices have been completely redesigned to provide consumers with the best tools to manage their wellness.

“We have seen an incredible amount of growth for the Galaxy Watch series as consumers have discovered the health benefits and convenience of wearables,” said Dr. TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics. “We understand the path to wellness is different for everyone, so we built a robust suite of health and wellness features to give people a deeper and more helpful understanding of their overall fitness.”

Samsung’s Most Advanced Suite of Health and Wellness Features

Galaxy Watch4 is equipped with Samsung’s groundbreaking BioActive Sensor, which boasts a smaller and more compact design that doesn’t detract from measurement accuracy. This new 3-in-1 sensor uses a single chip to precisely run three powerful health sensors — Optical Heart Rate, Electrical Heart and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis — so users can monitor their blood pressure,12 detect an AFib irregular heartbeat,32 measure their blood oxygen level,4 and, for the first time, calculate their body composition.5 Our all-new Body Composition measurement tool gives users a deeper understanding of their general health and fitness, with key measurements like skeletal muscle, basal metabolic rate, body water and body fat percentage. Now, you can easily check your body composition from your wrist with just two fingers. In about 15 seconds, your watch’s sensor will capture 2,400 data points.

These smartwatches come packed with an array of wellness features to track your daily activities and stay motivated to be your best. Choose from a wide range of guided workouts, enjoy Group Challenges with your friends and family, or set up a home gym by connecting your Galaxy Watch4 to your compatible Samsung Smart TV, where calorie counts and heart rate metrics appear on screen for easier tracking.6 And when you’re ready to rest, the Galaxy Watch4 series offers our most complete picture of your sleep patterns yet7with greater detail than before. Your compatible smartphone detects the sounds of your snores,8 while your smartwatch measures your blood oxygen level when you sleep4 Together with advanced Sleep Scores, you can learn more about your sleep patterns to get better rest.

The Ultimate Mobile Experience, With One UI Watch and Wear OS Powered by Samsung

Simplicity, ease, and efficiency are hallmarks of the Galaxy smartwatch platform—and with Samsung’s brand-new One UI Watch, and Wear OS Powered by Samsung, we’ve made the smartwatch and Galaxy experience even more seamless. With One UI Watch, compatible apps are automatically installed on your watch when downloaded on your phone,9 and your important settings – like do not disturb hours and blocked callers – are synced instantly. Auto Switch10 ensures your earbuds can toggle audio between your phone and watch, depending on usage. You can also effortlessly control your mobile experience with Bixby voice,11 bezel and Gesture Controls. Move your forearm up and down twice to receive calls and rotate your wrist twice to reject them — or to dismiss notifications and alarms.

Galaxy Watch4 series is also the first generation of smartwatches to feature Wear OS Powered by Samsung —a new platform that elevates every aspect of the smartwatch experience. Built by Samsung and Google, this cutting-edge platform lets you tap into an expansive ecosystem right from your wrist – with popular Google apps12 like Google Maps, and beloved Galaxy services,11 like Samsung Pay, SmartThings and Bixby. The new platform also includes support for leading third-party apps,12 like adidas Running, Calm, Strava, and Spotify available from Google Play. Along with our advanced hardware and even more intuitive user interface, you can enjoy smooth and convenient integrated experiences with your Galaxy Watch4. For example, our enhanced built-in compass works in tandem with Google Maps to make it easy to explore a new area.

Bringing Powerful Performance Directly to Your Wrist

This incredible experience is backed by serious hardware upgrades including the enhanced processor, richer displays, and expanded memory. Galaxy Watch4 series boasts the first 5nm processor in a Galaxy Watch – with 20% faster CPU and 50% more RAM, and a GPU 10 times faster than the previous generation. That means scrolling and multitasking on Galaxy Watch4 series is smooth and effortless. We also upped the resolution on the display, up to 450 x 450 pixels,13 so visuals are crisper and more distinctive. And with an impressive 16GB of memory, you’ll have enough storage to download and store your favorite apps, music, and photos – with the confidence they’re secure, thanks to Samsung’s Knox security platform.

Samsung’s leadership in eSIM technology enables users to enjoy the freedom of being able to leave their phone behind, knowing their smartwatch will automatically sync up and fill the gap.14 We also know a reliable battery is essential to smartwatch. You can have up to 40 hours15 of battery life, more than enough to keep a charge on an overnight camping trip – even as it supports the faster processor, higher resolution display, expanded memory and more sophisticated health features. And when you need more juice quickly, 30 minutes of charging provides up to 10 hours of battery.

Pricing and Availability16

Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic are available for pre-order in select markets starting on August 11, with retail availability starting August 27. Both watches showcase a sleek, iconic silhouette, with thinner cases than previous generations—and a variety of straps17 and customizable watch faces, so your watch is uniquely you.
