What’s New:

New features¹ include Bedtime Guidance² to optimize sleep; Vascular Load³ to measure stress on the vascular system during sleep; Running Coach⁴ to support personalized training strategies; and Antioxidant Index⁵ to measure carotenoid levels for healthy aging. These features — part of One UI 8 Watch on the latest Galaxy Watch series — will be available to a limited number of users through a beta program.⁶

Bedtime Guidance

A single night of restful sleep offers immediate health benefits, encouraging proactive behavioral changes that contribute to a healthier tomorrow. This begins with setting and maintaining a consistent, optimal bedtime.

• Samsung continually advances its sleep-related features, including sleep pattern analysis, sleep coaching, tools for optimizing sleep environments and a feature that detects signs of sleep apnea⁷ — a common sleep disorder.
• Now, Samsung is introducing additional tools for better sleep, such as recommending an optimal bedtime based on individual lifestyle and sleep patterns along with reminders to help users stay consistent.
• By analyzing sleep data from the past three days, the feature evaluates both sleep pressure and circadian rhythm to suggest a bedtime that maximizes alertness the next day.
• This feature is especially helpful for those recovering from periods of irregular sleep. If users go to bed later than planned for several days or follow inconsistent schedules between weekdays and weekends, Bedtime Guidance will consider these factors to help ensure sufficient rest.

Vascular Load

Sleep is a window into overall health, influencing holistic well-being. The Galaxy Watch series leverages this opportunity to measure vascular load — the amount of stress on the vascular system during sleep.

• The vascular system carries blood throughout the body to deliver oxygen and nutrients while removing waste, making it a key indicator of heart health.
• During sleep, stress on the vascular system should naturally decrease. However, excessive fluctuations may negatively impact cardiovascular health.
• By wearing the Galaxy Watch during sleep, users can receive insights into vascular load and the stress placed on their vascular system.
• Because health factors are interconnected, Vascular Load also provides insight into lifestyle components such as sleep, exercise and stress — helping users maintain a healthier routine and build positive habits.

Running Coach

While sleep is a vital time to restore and support overall health, managing well-being during active moments is equally important. Running is one of the most accessible fitness activities, and Samsung has long supported runners by offering features that promote consistent training and help users reach their fitness goals.

• Many runners experience injuries due to over-pacing or undertraining. Running Coach is designed to help users train safely for marathons through optimized intensity and injury-preventive routines, making it ideal for beginners.
• The feature offers motivation and real-time guidance, creating a personalized training program based on the runner’s fitness level.
• By wearing the Galaxy Watch and running for 12 minutes, users receive a performance analysis and a running level score from 1 to 10. Based on this data, a detailed training plan is generated to support completion of a 5K, 10K, half marathon or full marathon. As users complete sessions, they level up and unlock their next running challenge.

Antioxidant Index

A holistic approach to health naturally includes a focus on aging and healthy aging. However, behavioral factors such as alcohol consumption, smoking, UV exposure, stress and lack of sleep can accelerate aging by increasing free radicals in the body that damage cells. Antioxidants, compounds found in many healthy foods, neutralize these free radicals to help prevent chronic illness and support healthy aging.

• The Galaxy Watch can measure carotenoids — antioxidants found in green and orange fruits and vegetables — that are stored in the skin.
• Antioxidant Index uses an industry-first feature to assess carotenoid levels in just five seconds via an advanced, light-activated BioActive Sensor.
• These insights can reflect behavioral changes. For example, drinking carrot juice may result in a measurable change in the index, offering motivation to adopt healthier habits.

This growth follows the feature’s receipt of CE (Conformité Européenne or European Conformity) marking for the European Economic Area. The CE marking affirms that Samsung meets the European Union’s health, safety and environmental protection standards, reinforcing its leadership in sleep technology. Additionally, the feature was recently approved by Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration and Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority.

The milestone builds on Samsung’s groundbreaking De Novo authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) — the first of its kind for a wearable device to detect signs of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.⁵ The Sleep Apnea feature was also approved by Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Brazil’s health regulatory agency ANVISA and Health Canada.

DST Takes a Toll on Sleep, With Younger Generations Most Disrupted

When looking into how much of an impact DST has on people the morning after, one thing is clear, everyone’s sleep patterns are thrown off. In fact, people spent a little too much time counting sheep the night of the time change, falling asleep 33 minutes later than the previous night, waking up 19 minutes earlier. While losing sleep isn’t easy at any age, those in their 20s likely felt it the most thanks to an extremely late bedtime and a seeming inability to sleep in.

Moreover, Sleep Score — calculated based on an evaluation of a users’ total sleep time, awake time, sleep cycle, plus physical and mental recovery — was at the worst level for weeks after DST — and again, people in their 20s appeared to be most affected. When examining in the seven-day Sleep Score average, the 20s age group demonstrated the slowest score recovery rate, while older age groups adapted much quicker. By the third week, Sleep Score for all age groups were still not stable as normal, showing fluctuations in the quality of a good night’s rest.

Ultra-Compact Form Factor Optimized for 24/7 Health Monitoring

Q. What inspired the creation of the Galaxy Ring, a completely new addition to Samsung’s wearable lineup?

Kim: We’ve been exploring new opportunities in the wearable market with a particular focus on the rapidly growing field of health management. This led us to look for the optimal form factor to provide more accurate, uninterrupted health data for personalized health solutions. After evaluating various form factors, we settled on the ring — a user-friendly, small and lightweight shape that can be worn 24/7.

Q. What key health management benefits does the Galaxy Ring offer?

Roh: Sleep is the foundation of health. The Galaxy Ring is comfortable enough to wear while sleeping and can last up to a week on a single charge,¹ making it ideal for collecting detailed and in-depth sleep data. A powerful sleep AI algorithm provides advanced sleep insights to help users better understand and improve their sleep. Furthermore, Energy Score analyzes sleep quality, activity levels, sleeping heart rate and sleeping heart rate variability data to deliver a daily health index to users.

Q. What factors were considered during the design process?

Kim: To maximize the advantages of the ring form, we examined the historical and biological significance of rings before incorporating these insights into the product. For example, we adopted a simple yet modern concave style to enhance the Galaxy Ring’s value as an everyday accessory. Moreover, the charging case and packaging have clamshell designs reminiscent of a jewelry box — elevating the quality of the product down to the finest details that users touch.

The Quest for an Effortless User Experience

Q. What was your primary focus during the planning process?

Kim: Since our main focus was to provide users with meaningful health insights, we engaged in extensive discussions with the Digital Health Team and other relevant departments. One notable outcome of these collaborations is the introduction of Energy Score on Samsung Health. In addition, users can receive personalized health insights powered by Galaxy AI to help them reach their health goals. This innovation marks a new step in active and autonomous health management, moving beyond mere monitoring to offer users valuable guidance for healthier lifestyles.

Roh: Comfort and aesthetics were also key priorities for us. Users were pleasantly surprised by how light the wearable is. During the planning phase, we conducted extensive research to ensure lightweight comfort. In addition, we carefully selected colors that complement a wide range of styles.

Q. What was the biggest challenge in designing the Galaxy Ring?

Roh: Designing and implementing gestures was particularly challenging. To create a connected Galaxy ecosystem, we considered various user scenarios to ensure the product would be practical and convenient for everyone. As a result, we introduced the alarm turnoff feature — allowing users to dismiss the wake-up alarm on their Galaxy smartphone with a double-pinch gesture on the Galaxy Ring. This same movement can also control the Galaxy smartphone’s camera, maximizing connectivity between devices.

Q. What has been the most memorable feedback since the Galaxy Ring launched?

Kim: Unlike our previous products, we released teasers for the Galaxy Ring before its launch to attract attention. I vividly remember how excitement for the wearable exploded beyond our expectations when the product was revealed. This surge in interest energized everyone working on the product, fueling our passion during the final stretch of the launch. I’m proud to say that every single member of the team worked hard to perfect the device.

Roh: The consumer feedback that pleased me the most was, “I love how it gives me such thorough health information, from sleep to exercise, when all I did was wear it.” We frequently hear that the product is so comfortable that users forget they have it on. This makes us proud and shows that our focus during the planning stage paid off. We’re grateful that users recognized our efforts in creating a premium experience — from the Galaxy Ring’s aesthetic to the charging case and practical sizing kit that allows users to measure their ring size in advance.

Ushering in a New Era of Health Management

Q. In one word or sentence, how would you describe the Galaxy Ring?

Kim: I would say it’s a “game changer.” The Galaxy Ring is the first new form factor since the Galaxy Watch series — offering an even more intimate health experience with powerful capabilities packed into a small, lightweight device. Achieving this feat required hard work from the development and design teams as well as various other departments. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in creating this product.

Roh: In a word, it’s the “beginning.” For some, the Galaxy Ring marks the start of a new day. For others, the device signifies the commencement of a full-blown health management journey. Nonetheless, we hope it will open a new era of possibilities in the wearable market.

Kim: We aim to maximize the benefits of this ultra-small form factor to track and manage health data in the simplest way possible. To develop the Energy Score feature, Samsung Research² collaborated with Professor Patrick O’Connor from the Mary Frances Early College of Education’s Department of Kinesiology at the University of Georgia, USA.

Samsung Newsroom explored the new Energy Score — designed to enhance the digital healthcare experience.

Energy is closely related to everyday efficiency and fatigue, and based on imperfectly understood neural circuit activity in the brain. As a result, objectively quantifying energy is not easy. Samsung Research and Professor O’Connor’s team joined forces to define and calculate an individual’s energy based on the available science.

A leading expert in exercise psychology, Professor O’Connor has extensively studied the effects of sleep, physical activity and caffeine intake on cognition and feelings of energy. He advised on the development of the Energy Score feature on Samsung Health, combining physical activity with neuroscience data and theory to suggest the concept of “Overall Capacity.”

While most existing services focus solely on physical aspects when measuring energy, Overall Capacity considers both physical and cognitive factors. Mental stressors can affect energy levels, as evidenced by disrupted sleep patterns and increased fatigue when stressed.

Essentially, energy reflects the amount of activity one can sustain relative to their total capacity. Exceeding one’s usual physical or mental load reduces energy in the short term. For example, if someone typically exercises at a low intensity for 30 minutes daily — but decides to engage in moderate-intensity exercise for an hour one day — their Energy Score is expected to drop the following day.

Regular exercise can improve Overall Capacity, potentially resulting in a higher Energy Score for the same workout intensity over time.

▲ Physical and cognitive loads that exceed average levels lead to reduced energy. However, regular exercise can increase energy or help maintain it at a higher average level.

Energy Score is calculated based on physical activity levels, sleep quality, heart rate during sleep and heart rate variability during sleep as measured by wearable devices. Samsung Research developed the Energy Score feature based on scientific studies and clinical research that studied the correlation between these indicators and cognitive, self-reported and physical markers of energy.

“Activity” can influence physical capacity. One can predict their energy for the day by comparing workout data from the previous day against their typical activity levels. This method employs the Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio concept that anticipates fatigue by assessing both long-term and short-term workload.

“Sleep” is primarily associated with mental capacity. Sleep patterns like average sleep duration over seven days, consistency of sleep and wake times and how quickly one falls asleep are analyzed and integrated into one’s Energy Score. This method follows the “energy reservoir” model — which explores the connections between sleep, fatigue and cognitive function, to calculate fluctuations in energy based on sleep duration and circadian rhythms.

“Sleeping Heart Rate” and “Sleeping Heart Rate Variability” are linked to both physical and mental capacities. Energy is forecast by comparing recent measurements to past long-term data trends. Predictions are more accurate when heart rate during sleep and heart rate variability during sleep data are both analyzed during a stable state of sleep.

Samsung Research took age and gender into account in determining how much weight each factor should have on one’s Energy Score. Furthermore, Professor O’Connor’s research team conducted experiments involving cognitive tests and self-reports of energy and fatigue symptoms, finding a significant correlation between the Energy Score generated by Samsung’s models and clinical data collected by the University of Georgia’s researchers.

Samsung Health’s Energy Score goes beyond simple numerical values. The figure offers health guidance and suggestions based on seven key factors affecting the score including average sleep duration and physical activity from the previous day.

To achieve this, Samsung Research combined its energy score model with optimization AI and generative AI technologies. Optimization AI first pinpoints key influences on the score and analyzes current energy levels along with recent lifestyle changes to suggest potential improvements. On-device generative AI then crafts these insights into friendly messages while upholding user privacy.

The health guidance provided gives users an understanding of their current Energy Score and science-based suggestions to manage appropriate levels of activity and rest for the day. By paying more attention to the factors that affect their daily Energy Score, users can go on to improve their lifestyle habits.

Professor O’Connor conducted extensive research in collaboration with Samsung developers, striving to enhance the reliability and validity of the Energy Score.

Fitness tracking tools also help you track workouts and progress with greater convenience. With the new Workout Routine, combine various exercises for a personalized workout and seamlessly transition to the next exercise without stopping. Stay motivated and track your progress when running or cycling using Race,⁷ which compares current and past performance on the same routes.

Q. What do you see as the future of health and what role does technology play in it, especially when combined with Generative AI?

Professor Chung: Through years of clinical experiences, I’ve learned there is immense value in a comprehensive, 360-degree understanding of a patient’s health history. However, it can be challenging to fully grasp their lifestyle or key wellness factors, such as sleep patterns or eating habits, especially when treatment is focused on specific symptoms. Lifelog data gained from wearables can be helpful for healthcare and clinical management to better understand the full context of one’s health history. And AI can assist clinicians by streamlining the management and interpretation of collected information over time, simplifying the process. The future of AI is distilling vital insights from daily life to deliver a deeper understanding of one’s health based on continuous monitoring by a wearable.

Dr. Blum: As a cardiologist, I also want to add that continuous monitoring is emerging as a vital tool in early detection and prediction of a potential disease. For instance, conditions like atrial fibrillation and high blood pressure, which are high risk and high impact, yet manageable through low-intensity interventions, can benefit greatly from such monitoring. By wearing a smartwatch, we can better understand the underlying issues that may be contributing to it, and Samsung can be hugely impactful here. These tools, powered by AI, can easily turn data into consumable insights and actionable wisdom, empowering individuals to take proactive steps to reduce possible health risks.

Dr. Klonoff: Glucose monitoring has become more prevalent, not just for diabetes management but for people who don’t have diabetes yet are interested in pursuing a healthier lifestyle. As such, there’s increasing interest in understanding what behaviors affect glucose levels. Since health metrics are interconnected, combining glucose data with sleep, blood pressure and activity level insights initiates profound conversations about individuals’ lifestyles and experiences. And if users can gain a deeper understanding of these collective insights sooner, then there’s increased opportunity to identify early warning signs of potential health issues such as diabetes. Wearables and AI amplify the value of physiological data and individuals can gain a richer, more nuanced understanding of metabolic health and facilitate opportunities to improve overall wellness and fitness.

Q. What role do you expect Samsung to play in the evolving health landscape?

Dr. Klonoff: We encourage Samsung to not only embrace AI in their health monitoring technology but continue to lean on their pioneering heritage of innovation to emerge as a leader in promoting behavioral change. Through ongoing conversations and collaborative efforts with medical experts, Samsung can help people make the changes in their lives that are needed. Leveraging these insights can encourage people to stay healthy over the long term without feeling overwhelmed and enable them to lead more fulfilling and enjoyable lives.

Dr. Blum: I agree that technology integrated into people’s lives can be an important step to maintain everyday wellness and help to prevent serious health conditions. These devices should seamlessly work in the background in an innocuous way, and Samsung has been a clear leader in this space with its diverse product offerings, ranging from smartphones and TVs to home appliances. However, the question that remains is how can we successfully improve people’s daily lives from a wellness perspective? In the end, it is crucial to connect with users to understand their patterns and encourage positive behavioral modifications; and Samsung has the potential to push the limits of what’s possible, so we can all take better care of ourselves and our families.

Professor Chung: I echo Dr. Blum’s sentiment, in that while Samsung devices are already deeply embedded into our everyday lives, there are opportunities to further embrace its device ecosystem to facilitate behavioral changes for a happier, healthier tomorrow. However, there’s immense power in making behavioral changes with support from family members; it’s more effective than taking on this challenge alone. That’s why it’s necessary to leverage continuous monitoring and insights, as well as create a care circle with family and friends. Samsung can be a huge contributor in creating a care circle by leveraging its expertise and advanced capabilities to maximize social connections with the goal of providing users with greater knowledge about themselves and their loved ones.

To explore the profound impact of sleep, Samsung hosted a panel discussion on March 10 titled, “How Technology Can Revolutionize the Age-Old Sleep Dilemma” during the 2024 South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival in Austin, Texas, USA. Experts uncovered how AI and technology have the potential to immensely improve sleep quality.

Moderated by Carolina Milanesi, President and Principal Analyst at Creative Strategies, the event took place just hours after Americans¹ set their clocks forward one hour for daylight saving time, underscoring the relevance of the conversation to panelists and audience members alike.

Decoding Sleep for Richer Insights

Milanesi kicked off the panel discussion by highlighting that “sleep is one of the most crucial factors that can lead to overall well-being.” She also emphasized the importance of understanding what kind of impact sleep has on our everyday lives — this served as the crux of the conversation that would follow.

The panelists unanimously agreed on the importance of sleep, and while it’s the foundation of health that directly impacts everyday activities, dietary choices, and mental well-being, it often isn’t prioritized, with sleep quality worsening worldwide. However, experts are hopeful that AI-led technology and wearables — including smart rings and smart watches with advanced sensors — can help individuals build better sleep habits and create optimal sleep environments.

The panelists emphasized that when people are informed about their sleep, they are more empowered to make decisions that help achieve better sleep. Pak stressed how essential wearables like the Galaxy Watch6 and the recently unveiled Galaxy Ring are to Samsung’s vision for enhanced sleep health, as they can track sleep metrics and provide meaningful insights that encourage users to develop better habits and make positive changes.

Hill emphasized the importance of making sleep a priority in the same way people carve time out for workouts, nutritious meals, and annual checkups. She added that individuals are empowered to achieve their best sleep with technology like wearables and gave a firsthand account of her own experience with sleep coaching² on the Galaxy Watch6 that did exactly that.

During the discussion, Pak also touched upon Samsung’s connected health ecosystem, mentioning its collaborations with medical institutes and its roster of health-focused companies helping expand the ecosystem and the Software Development Kit (SDK). This allows partners to develop solutions leveraging Samsung’s insights and technologies.

Pak stressed how mobile devices will become the primary access point for AI and how Samsung is striving to deliver personalized and actionable insights by incorporating and analyzing extensive information through Samsung Health App. These insights are then transformed by AI to deliver tailored health experiences.

“Sleep is a subjective experience. However, there’s tremendous value in objective measurements — like the insights wearable devices provide,” said Lopos. “Sleep tracking is an expanding space, and the capabilities of AI take it to the next level. AI technology can enable personalized information to be shared with users and empower them to make small behavioral changes for the better.”

“We’re focused on turning tracked data into intuitive and meaningful insights using AI, meaning consumers are met with more tailored experiences.” Pak added. He noted that with more products and form factors, improved sensors and advanced algorithms, technology can help individuals commit to a consistent sleep schedule and learn how to get a better night’s sleep.

Hill agreed that users will feel the benefits of AI on a tangible and personal level, particularly through upcoming Samsung Health features like My Vitality Score and the Booster Card,³ which combine richer data with more responsive analysis to make user guidance more personalized and actionable in their daily lives.

Through this in-depth expert panel session, Samsung is celebrating World Sleep Day and will continue prioritizing sleep health as it expands its tech capabilities and evolving product portfolio. Samsung Electronics announced that the sleep apnea feature¹ on the Samsung Health Monitor app² has received De Novo authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This feature, which detects signs of sleep apnea using a compatible Samsung Galaxy Watch and phone, was the first of its kind to be authorized by the FDA following previous approval by Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), announced last October in Korea.

The sleep apnea feature enables users over the age of 22 who have not been diagnosed with sleep apnea to detect signs of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) over a two-night monitoring period, a common and chronic sleep condition that often goes undiagnosed and untreated. To utilize the feature, users can simply track their sleep twice for more than four hours within a ten-day period.

OSA causes a person to stop breathing while sleeping and can often result in disruptions in oxygen supply, decreased sleep quality and increased daytime fatigue. Untreated sleep apnea can compound the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure, cardiac arrhythmia and stroke. According to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), roughly 25% of men and 10% of women in the U.S. experience OSA. The new feature on the Samsung Health Monitor app is expected to help more people proactively detect moderate or severe forms of OSA, and as a result of the detection seek medical care to reduce the possibility of health-related complications.

Good health is strongly linked to good sleep. Sleep helps bodies and minds recover and empowers people to wake up refreshed and ready for the day ahead. The quality of sleep people get every night has a significant impact on their physical and mental well-being, relationships, performance and more. Samsung recognizes the foundational role that sleep serves in people’s health and well-being by focusing on three key elements for better sleep: understanding sleep patterns, building better habits and creating a sleep-friendly environment.

With the sleep apnea feature, Samsung is taking the next step in its ongoing commitment to provide Galaxy users with the best possible sleep tools to improve their sleep health habits. Samsung Electronics today announced a new Medications tracking feature¹ that will be added to the Samsung Health app² to help users manage their health more comprehensively. The new feature will help users easily keep track of both their prescription and over-the-counter medications and provide important, relevant information and tips about these medications. In particular, it can assist those who take medications regularly and those taking supplements for general well-being.

“Samsung Health aims to help people better understand and manage their health through a holistic platform by connecting devices, services and people,” said Hon Pak, Vice President and Head of Digital Health Team, MX Business at Samsung Electronics. “With the addition of the new Medications tracking feature, we believe users will be able to more conveniently manage their medications, improve adherence and ultimately maintain better health overall.”

Upon entering the name of a select medication into Samsung Health, the Medications feature will provide users with detailed information that includes general descriptions as well as possible side effects. Adverse reactions that could occur from drug-to-drug interactions or if taken alongside certain food and substances such as caffeine and alcohol, are also provided. One example of this is, if a user is taking the prescription drug Simvastatin, Samsung Health will warn the user that the drug has been linked to serious side effects when combined with grapefruit juice. Users can even log the shape and color of their medications, allowing them to easily differentiate between the pills they are taking. Dosage, time of consumption and other details can also be added to avoid any potential confusion.

Users can set up alerts that remind them both when to take their medications and when they should consider refilling them. These alerts are fine-tuned to the individual user so the Medications feature is able to prioritize medications depending on their importance, with Samsung Health sending reminders ranging from “gentle” to “strong” depending on how important or urgent a given prescription is. For crucial medications, users can set a “strong” reminder that will display a full screen alert on their smartphone accompanied by a long tone. For supplements like vitamins, a simple pop-up reminder will appear that will not disturb the user. Galaxy Watch users will also receive reminders right on their wrist so they can stay on top of their medication schedules, even when away from their phones.

The Samsung Health app provides a range of advanced health offerings spanning sleep management,³ mindfulness programs and irregular heart rhythm detection⁴ capabilities. With the addition of the Medications tracking feature, Samsung Health delivers a truly holistic wellness experience that helps users maintain healthier lifestyles while keeping on top of their medication regimens.

The Medications tracking feature will first be available on Samsung Health app in the U.S. via the app updates rolling out later this week.

Once the Universal Gestures feature is enabled, make a fist twice to seamlessly switch from the regular touch-based navigation method.² Your Galaxy Watch will indicate it with a customizable colored outline, allowing you to utilize this intuitive mode for a tailored and accessible experience.

Make Fist To Open Action Menu and Select

Within Universal Gestures, the Make Fist gesture simplifies the process of selecting and opening items on the Galaxy Watch.

Make Fist Twice gesture unveils the Action menu, which is an array of convenient options accessible right from your wrist. Imagine this menu as a toolbox packed with essential tools, such as opening the apps menu, going to the previous screen and displaying recent apps, readily available whenever you need it. The Action menu is also dynamic, adjusting its content based on whichever screen is currently open when the user activates the Action menu. When you are ready to select the item, simply make a fist.

Pinch To Navigate Back and Forth

The Pinch and Double Pinch gestures on the Galaxy Watch offer new touch-free ways for users to interact with their Galaxy Watch, which are especially beneficial for individuals facing mobility limitations. With these two gestures, you can navigate from one item to another or go back to the previous item.

Scroll through your messages, browse your calendar items or peruse your photo album — these are all made possible with the Pinch gesture.

Samsung rolled out the “Samsung x You” campaign across Southeast Asia and Oceania (SEAO), offering an unparalleled opportunity to experience limitless device customization possibilities. Displaying the extensive collection of accessories available for the Galaxy Z Flip5, the initiative encouraged users to express their individuality through their devices. In addition, Samsung collaborated with renowned local artists and brands to bring region-exclusive accessories that incorporate cultural designs and elements — providing users with unique colors, themes and designs to choose from. Samsung set out to answer this question by conducting one of the largest single sleep health studies³ ever undertaken — analyzing 716 million nights of sleep behaviors from Samsung Health users worldwide. Though interest in personal sleep health has been skyrocketing, the unfortunate reality is that the quality of sleep people get each night is, in fact, declining. The world is facing a sleep dilemma.

The World Sleeps Less — and Less Efficiently

Across the globe, average sleep duration has fallen from 7 hours and 3 minutes to 6 hours and 59 minutes globally — slipping below the essential 7-hour threshold recommended by the National Sleep Foundation. (Chart 1)

Another concerning aspect is the increase in awake time during sleep, leading to a decline in sleep efficiency — a key factor in sleep quality that is tracked by calculating the ratio of actual time asleep to the total time spent in bed each night.

This pattern was not isolated to any specific demographic or region. There was a reported decrease in sleep duration and efficiency across all sexes, age groups, and regions studied:

• Though sleep efficiency continues to trend downward for males, females experienced the most notable decreases over the past year. (Chart 2)
• Older demographics showed a greater decline in sleep efficiency. Notably, individuals aged over 70 experienced a decline nearly twice as much as that observed in those in their 20s. (Chart 3)
• North America witnessed the greatest decrease in sleep efficiency, while Asia maintained the lowest. (Chart 4)
• Outside of Europe and North America, all other regions had less than seven hours of sleep duration. (Chart 4)

Sleep Debt Highly Impacting Younger People

Inconsistent sleep patterns also impact sleep quality. Sleep debt — a measure of sleep inconsistency that indexes the gap between the amount of sleep during the weekdays counter to weekends — also negatively contributes to global sleep issues.

Sleep debt is highest among the young — those in their 20s had nearly double the sleep debt than those in their 70s: 49 minutes versus 29 minutes, respectively. (Chart 5) By region, Asia had the shortest sleep debt at 41 minutes whereas Latin America had the longest at 47 minutes. Globally, people are sleeping an extra 44 minutes on the weekends on average. (Chart 6)

Counting Penguins, Not Counting Sheep

In an effort to gain deeper insight into prevalent global sleep patterns, Samsung set out to analyze and categorize various types of sleepers into Sleep Animals.⁴ Each of the eight Sleep Animals represents a distinct sleep pattern with unique characteristics related to sleep duration, consistency, and awake time — all of which collectively influence sleep quality. (Chart 7)

Interestingly, the majority of individuals worldwide identified most closely with the sleep styles of “Nervous Penguins” comprising of one-third of participants. They maintain healthy circadian rhythms yet frequently experience interruptions during sleep, contributing to diminished sleep efficiency. This pattern aligns with the downward trend observed over the past year. (Chart 8)

• Older users saw higher percentages of “Cautious Deer,” meaning a person with shorter sleep duration and higher awake times. Almost 40% of those in their 70s had “Cautious Deer” as the Sleep Animal, which is almost 10 times more than those in their 20s. The ratio of the animal showed a consistent increase as the age group got older. (Chart 9)
• People in their 20s — in addition to higher representation of “Sensitive Hedgehogs” — also saw more “Sun Averse Moles” compared to older age groups. These categories, those who have problem with sleep consistency, became increasingly prevalent as the age demographic decreased as well. (Chart 9)

How Small Habits Can Deliver Quality Sleep

In addition to Sleep Animals, there are a suite of Sleep Coaching programs that aim to improve the quality of sleep. They are driven by the strong belief that forming small, daily habit changes can result in better sleep quality. It provides a month of motivational sleep coaching customized according to users’ unique animal sleep type right on their wrist — including, but not limited to getting out of bed quickly in the morning, having a regular wake-up time, being active during the day, and other positive habits.

To examine the effectiveness of the Sleep Coaching, Samsung analyzed how many users moved on to higher tier of Sleep Animal with coaching (Chart 10). For example, if you were “Alligator on the Hunt” in tier 3, it’s counted as effective when you move on to higher tier of Sleep Animal in tier 1 or 2. When we saw the results, it actually worked. An example of the effectiveness of Sleep Coaching resulted from the fact that Sleep Animals can evolve in positive directions with better sleep habits.

• Some users experienced better sleep quality the more they participated in Sleep Coaching. Every Animal saw higher improvement after 2 months of coaching than just 1 month.
• 94% of “Exhausted Shark” — the most substandard Sleep Animal designation defined by those who are visibly sleep deprived and yet cannot achieve quality sleep — saw improvement after just two months of Sleep Coaching.

Better sleep health is possible with just small habits. With Galaxy Watch6 series and Samsung Health, users can achieve healthier sleep with a better understanding of their own sleep patterns and personalized motivations and coaching.

The rapid evolution of wearable technology has highlighted the potential to use our devices not only to elevate our daily experiences but also to gain deeper insights into our holistic well-being. From empowering individuals to track their wellness to providing a wealth of health-related data, wearables like the Galaxy Watch series¹ have begun to redefine how we approach healthcare. Discover how Samsung Electronics’ technology has impacted the lives and health of two individuals.

Ms. A, a 70-year-old woman with a history of cardiac surgery, recently experienced dizziness. So, she opted for an ECG patch test, but the findings were within the bounds of normalcy. Ms. A, mindful of her age and history of arrhythmia, wanted to monitor her health condition constantly. In response, the medical team at her hospital in South Korea recommended she use a Galaxy Watch along with a hospital-linked app to monitor her health status.

Following her outpatient visit, Ms. A continued wearing the Galaxy Watch in her daily life. On one occasion, she again experienced dizziness. The heart rate measured by the Galaxy Watch was slow, 40 beats per minute. This data was promptly shared with the ECG Reading Center at Sejong Hospital in Incheon, and she was told to come directly to the hospital with suspicion that she might be in an emergency condition. Ms. A was quickly admitted to the emergency room and underwent surgery to insert a pacemaker, a device that provides artificial stimulation to the heart when its function deteriorates. Thankfully, she safely left the hospital after the successful procedure.

Mr. B, a 62-year-old man residing in Brazil, was discharged from the hospital after heart valve surgery. Following the medical staff’s recommendation for a clinical study, he wore a Galaxy Watch daily and checked his physical conditions, including an electrocardiogram (ECG). During the remote observation period, Abnormal signals had been consistently detected by Mr.B’s Galaxy Watch. To address this, the hospital’s medical staff conducted a thorough video consultation. Through this consultation, the staff discovered that Mr.B has Parkinson’s disease, allowing the hospital to provide appropriate clinical guidance.

Patients experiencing motor symptoms or cognitive impairment, like those with Parkinson’s disease, need extra care during the post-surgery recovery phase. In this case, Parkinson’s disease wasn’t a major consideration at the time of his surgery, but the medical team can give Mr.B the right guidance with the abnormal data detected by Mr. B’s Galaxy Watch.

Ms. A, reflecting on her experience, said, “With the Galaxy Watch, I could keep an eye on my health more regularly.”

“Wearable devices such as the Galaxy Watch have made it easy to monitor health conditions in daily life,” explained an official from Sejong Hospital in Incheon, South Korea. “Continuous monitoring is required even after successful surgery, and we expect that wearable devices such as the Galaxy Watch have the potential to help in health management and monitoring.”

How well do you know your mind? Have you had a moment recently to check in on how you are feeling — both in body and in mind? For many, the answers to these questions may not be positive, which is why World Mental Health Day is an important reminder to look after our mental health the same way we monitor our physical health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 in every 8 people in the world live with a mental disorder.¹

Mental health conditions are prevalent around the world, and are oftentimes overlooked and overshadowed by our hectic daily lives. Although an all-too-common occurrence, issues can go unchecked when people aren’t aware of a mental health condition, or even ignored when it becomes apparent, leading to them suffering in silence.

However, as more and more people around the world have begun to realize the importance of mental health awareness, demand for a better understanding of mental well-being and convenient ways to monitor it daily is increasing. This is why, as part of its ongoing work to expand the functionality and benefits of its wearable devices, Samsung is partnering with Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), an affiliate hospital of Harvard Medical School, to take wearable mental health data capabilities even further.

Samsung and Massachusetts General Hospital psychiatry department experts are collaborating to conduct a study using the Galaxy Watch to understand the relationship between factors such as sleep, physical activity, heart rate, heart rate variability, daily routines and a user’s mental health status. In the study, researchers will analyze watch data from the participants to understand how the smartwatches can be used as an efficient and convenient tool to monitor an individual’s mental health.

Collaborating with the MIT(Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Media Lab, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Tulane University School of Medicine and Samsung Medical Center, the new research program will explore enhancements to the digital health ecosystem and new approaches to wellness. With the research findings from these collaborations, Samsung will strive to develop its technology further to support the healthcare industry, expand understanding of individuals’ minds and bodies and unlock the full wellness potential of personal devices.

Discovering Deeper Sleep With the MIT Media Lab

In collaboration with the MIT Media Lab, Samsung aims to explore new digital profiles for monitoring and improving sleep.

“There’s an ever-growing understanding of how poor sleep negatively impacts both individuals and society at large. Wearable sleep tracking solutions may provide many potential offerings to improve our sleep in the future,” said the MIT Media Lab Professor Pattie Maes, who is also a principal investigator on the collaboration. “We want to go beyond what is currently possible — to investigate more unique sleep profiles, to better personalize sleep interventions for users, and to explore better models for sleep regularity, homeostasis and circadian rhythm.”

Quantifying Resilience and Frailty With Brigham & Women’s Hospital

By examining Galaxy Watch biometric data, Samsung will work with Brigham & Women’s Hospital to explore how clarifying the twin concepts of resilience and frailty can build more effective, personalized pictures of individuals’ health.

“Through our work with Samsung, we are exploring how to put concepts like resilience and frailty into quantifiable terms and investigate how seemingly disparate physiologic systems affect each other,” said Dr. Bruce Levy, Interim Chair, Department of Medicine and Chief, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. “We aim to give people actionable insights to maximize their resilience from a stressor, leveraging wearable sensors technology, which offers a unique opportunity to map individual trajectories of recovery or deterioration.”

Confronting Cardiovascular Disease With Tulane University School of Medicine

In partnership with Tulane University School of Medicine, Samsung will utilize the Galaxy Watch’s BioActive sensor to monitor a range of cardiovascular disease indicators.

“Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide,” said Dr. Nassir Marrouche, principal investigator of the study and Director of the Tulane Research Innovation for Arrhythmia Discovery at Tulane University School of Medicine. “By combining our extensive expertise in cardiovascular disease, Samsung’s BioActive sensor technology and data-driven machine learning approaches, we aim to unlock a significant, latent body of data to help better predict who’s at risk for hospitalization, get them treatment faster and ultimately improve health outcomes.”

New, Multi-Domain Approaches With the Samsung Medical Center

Working closely with the Samsung Medical Center, Samsung is researching multi-domain healthcare with the aim of developing an integrated analysis data platform and advanced algorithms for abnormal symptom notification.

“This new collaboration will study new methods and systems spanning heart health, sleep and mindfulness utilizing personalized dashboards and dynamic, multi-domain platforms,” said Seung Woo Park, President and CEO, Samsung Medical Center. “Leveraging both Samsung’s comprehensive services and wide operational capacity and Samsung Medical Center’s expertise and clinical research facilities, the partnership aims to develop an algorithm and build a platform to better monitor and give insights on users’ heart health, sleep, mental health and more.”

Through these efforts, Samsung hopes to discover new possibilities for wearables in digital health and deliver diverse and enhanced health services for users and beyond. Samsung Electronics today announced that the new sleep apnea feature¹ on the Samsung Health Monitor app² has been approved by Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), and will be coming to Galaxy Watch series in Korea early next year. The new feature is expected to enable more people to spot obstructive sleep apnea symptoms in early stages which often goes undiagnosed and untreated.

“Samsung remains committed to delivering advanced technologies to Galaxy wearables that help more people better understand and take control of their wellness,” said Hon Pak, Vice President and Head of Digital Health Team, MX Business at Samsung Electronics. “With the new sleep apnea feature on Galaxy Watch series, we are providing users with a simple, proactive tool to recognize this disorder in its earliest possible stages before their condition worsens.”

Considered a common yet serious medical condition, sleep apnea causes someone to stop breathing while asleep, which can result in disruptions in oxygen supply, lower sleep quality, and other health complications such as hypertension, cardiac disorder, stroke or cognitive disorder. According to the National Sleep Foundation, roughly 25 percent of men and 10 percent of women in the US suffer from obstructive sleep apnea,³ of which many fail to recognize their symptoms or seek medical treatment. The new sleep apnea feature is designed to enable more people to proactively spot symptoms of the condition, encourage discovering earlier, and further reduce the possibility of health related complications.

By leveraging Galaxy Watch’s BioActive Sensor, the sleep apnea feature monitors blood oxygen levels during sleep and identifies moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea by analyzing how the detected blood oxygen values change to apnea/hypopnea, then estimates Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI). Users are simply required to track their sleep twice, each time more than 4 hours, within 10 days to gauge whether they have these symptoms.

Galaxy Watch’s new sleep apnea feature joins blood pressure monitoring,⁴ electrocardiogram (ECG) detection⁵ and irregular heart rhythm notification (IHRN)⁶ as the latest addition to the Samsung Health Monitor app, giving users a better understanding of their holistic health — all right from their wrist. It will be made available on Galaxy Watch series in Korea via Samsung Health Monitor app updates beginning early next year.⁷

The Michigan Performance Research Laboratory (MiPR) — ESSI’s core research lab — will oversee an eight-month study that uses the Galaxy Watch series to estimate the VO₂ max and sweat loss of participants as they run. The study will compare reference data¹ against smartwatch data from both indoor (treadmill) and outdoor running trials of different distances, from 2.5km to 20km.

Runners at all levels grapple with sweat loss, dehydration and heat management, particularly during the summer months. Samsung and University of Michigan teams hope the study’s findings will further enhance smartwatch technology, giving runners more accurate measurements of their health metrics to help solve these issues.

Samsung chose the MiPR lab for this study given its established relationships within the wearable tech industry and running community, as well as the unique skill sets of its researchers. Co-PIs Adam Lepley, associate director – research; Alexandra DeJong Lempke, associate director – academics; and Ken Kozloff, co-director of ESSI, bring expertise in sports medicine, running-related injury, and performance, wearable tech, and applied/translational research. The ESSI MiPR lab has collaborated with the University of Michigan Athletic Department, multiple professional sports organizations, and industry leaders to derive meaningful insights from wearable technology that can be applied to sport and exercise.

Participant enrollment and data collection are already underway thanks to an enthusiastic response from local runners. “Ann Arbor is home to a robust running community, with community-based runners up to Olympic contenders,” Kozloff says.

The recently launched Samsung Galaxy Watch6 and Galaxy Watch6 Classic feature personalized fitness coaching, advanced sleep management and health monitoring to keep users motivated and focused on their goals.² For runners, the new Personalized Heart Rate Zone feature³ provides five optimal running intensity levels based on individual physical capabilities, empowering them to set goals based on their own ability. Additionally, Track Run helps runners record their runs while on a running track. During a run, Galaxy Watch provides in-depth analysis including asymmetry, regularity and ground contact time to help improve performance and reduce injury.

To learn more about the importance of sleep, Samsung Newsroom sat down with behavioral sleep scientist as well as Samsung Wellness Council member Dr. Vanessa Hill and discussed how technology, such as Galaxy Watch series, can help improve sleep quality.

Q. Please introduce yourself and the research you’ve done as a sleep scientist.

I’m passionate about sleep and want people to feel better about their health.

My research focuses on the pre-sleep period, evening routines and healthy sleep habits to support restorative sleep. I’m particularly interested in the relationship between sleep and technology as well as strategies to reduce blue light exposure before bed.

Besides my research, I created “Sleeping With Friends” — a reality TV show on YouTube Originals about improving the quality of sleep. In addition, I’m serving as an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) ambassador for Women in STEM.

Q. Why is sleep important? How does it influence individuals’ overall health?

Sleep is a huge factor that affects our health and well-being, and it’s one that we can control. The duration and quality of sleep affect everything from our daily mood, productivity and memory to post-workout muscle recovery.

Good sleep is crucial for our holistic health and is intertwined with other factors like physical activity. Striking a healthy balance between these different factors — exercise and sleep, for instance — is necessary for our overall physical and mental health.

Q. How do daytime and nighttime habits affect sleep? What are some metrics that are measured when analyzing sleep quality?

Behaviors that arouse the brain before bedtime — using your phone to scroll through social media or doing work — can lengthen the time it takes to fall asleep and contribute to more nighttime awakenings. Additionally, developing healthy daytime habits such as physical activity or meditation can lead to more restorative sleep and less sleep disturbance.

The key metrics we measure are sleep latency, quality, duration, nighttime awakenings and daytime fatigue. Together, these metrics are generally tallied and used to communicate overall sleep quality.

Q. How can people improve their sleep quality?

Two ways people can enhance their sleep quality are by integrating stress management habits and moving their bodies. Elevated stress levels can disrupt sleep — incorporating meditation, journaling or listening to music throughout the day or in the evening can help alleviate stress. Another habit that can improve sleep quality is to get out and move. By walking outside in the morning, you can experience the benefits of physical activity and the impact of natural light in regulating your circadian rhythm.

Q. How are wearable devices, such as Samsung’s Galaxy Watch6 series, helping users measure and improve their sleep quality?

Wearables have the potential to revolutionize and personalize health, but sleep tracking by itself isn’t enough to change our habits. Research shows that people understand sleep is important, but struggle to improve it in part due to habitual behavior. Technology can help us break those habits or replace them with better ones.

The Sleep Score Factors and personalized Sleep Coaching on the Galaxy Watch6 series are game changers. By tracking certain habits, people can gain deeper insights into how their day-to-day actions are impacting their sleep quality.

Q. What future sleep-related enhancements would you like to see on wearables?

In the future, I’d love to see deeper insights into the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality in the Samsung Health app. These insights could help time-poor people tailor their schedules to fit in a workout routine without negatively impacting their sleep.

Another future sleep-related enhancement would be meaningful insights on chronotype — your biological preference for sleep timing. With an in-depth analysis of chronotypes, users can predict when they will have optimal energy during the day.

Q. Is there any message or advice you’d like to deliver as a sleep researcher?

We all have our own bedtime routines and habits. It’s important to remember this when adjusting your lifestyle and preferences. To improve the quality of sleep, set a bedtime and try to stick to it as much as possible. Using Sleep Mode across your watch and phone to mute notifications and dim screens can help create the perfect sleep environment, eliminating additional distractions and interruptions.

LE Audio, an advanced Bluetooth audio standard, broadens the spectrum of audio experiences to deliver more complex and richer sound that goes beyond providing better-sounding music, but also allows users to share sound with others as they personally experience it. As a pioneer of innovative technologies, Samsung has been leveraging new LE Audio-based features that further elevate sound experiences, including 360 Audio Recording, enabling Galaxy smartphone users to capture sound on video precisely as they hear it without the need for professional equipment. Additionally, the select Galaxy Book3 devices² offer a crystal clear listening experience with improved latency — perfect for immersive gaming and multimedia consumption.

And now, with Auracast broadcast audio technology for Galaxy Buds2 Pro and Samsung 2023 Neo QLED 8K and 2023 MICRO LED, rolling out via software updates starting this September,³ Samsung is again upleveling and expanding connected experiences beyond mobile devices to home appliances. With Auracast, users can turn their device into a shared radio station able to broadcast across connected devices. Leveraging the new LE Audio, it allows users to connect multiple sets of Buds to a TV⁴ while users could only connect a maximum of two devices previously. Auracast opens a variety of potential use cases and possibilities for further device applications — from augmented or assistive listening in a theater or lecture hall for those who want hear better, to sharing a playlist from your smartphone while on a run with friends, to even multi-language support without translation devices by sending different language interpretations via different channels.

Samsung Newsroom sat down with Eva to discuss her design journey with Samsung and how her Galaxy Watch6 characters can become trusty sidekicks around the clock.

Unpacking the Collaboration

Q1. Could you share your experience working with Samsung on the Galaxy Watch6 project? What was your creative process?

Certainly! This partnership with Samsung for the Galaxy Watch6 series was a wonderful experience. I was asked to design a range of fun and quirky characters that users could choose from. These characters were designed with various activities in mind, such as listening to music or engaging in sports, and I was able to experiment with creating personality traits for each character in my own style.

It began as most projects do — with lots of sketches exploring different characters and brainstorming how to illustrate different activities to make them interactive with the user. From there, I closely collaborated with the Samsung team to fine-tune every detail, from color palettes and textures to lighting effects and character animations to optimize the experience to the Galaxy Watch6.

Q2. Can you tell us about your and Samsung’s roles in this collaboration? How did this collaboration stand out from your previous experiences?

In this partnership, Samsung and I had distinct roles. My job was to design a bunch of unique characters for the Galaxy Watch6 series while Samsung brought expertise in the watch’s technical capabilities to guide me on what was possible. The team gave me lots of room to be creative, and it was so much fun to see my characters in a new setting!

This collaboration was different in the sense that I was creating characters that people could take with them wherever they went. I really had to think about how to design characters that felt universal and appealed to a broad audience.

Designing for the Galaxy Watch6 Series

Q3. You’ve created five characters for the Galaxy Watch6’s watch faces: Ball, Frog, Flower, Heart and Abstract. What makes each of these characters unique?

The Ball character is perfect for sports enthusiasts. It’s full of energy and bounce, making it an ideal companion for your runs. Then, there’s Frog — a cool character, but keep an eye on your battery level as he gets tired when it runs low! For nature lovers, the Flower character is always in sync with the weather outside, giving you a heads-up on what’s happening outdoors. The Heart character is a music aficionado, so just put on some tunes and watch it groove! Lastly, Abstract is a special character that stands out from the others — it’s bold, graphic and colorful. Abstract even reacts to incoming messages, giving users a dynamic and visual way to stay connected.

Q4. What inspired you to create these characters?

I’ve always been inspired by old cartoons and classic characters. I love characters that are full of life!

For these particular characters, I found inspiration in imagining all the ways people use their watches throughout the day. The Galaxy Watch6 series’ versatile capabilities really sparked ideas about what the characters could do and how they would appear. For example, there is an energetic basketball helping you exercise and a drained frog serving as a low-battery alert.

Q5. Tell us more about the design process. What posed the greatest challenge? How did you feel after viewing the finished product?

The design process presented its own challenges, considering I had to work on a small scale and ensure that the character movements seamlessly fit within the watch screen. Despite these hurdles, I was thrilled when I completed the project. I love seeing my characters out in the world and knowing that people will carry them everywhere!

It’s so easy to hang out with these characters on the new Galaxy Watch6 series. The watch face features a higher resolution and larger display, meaning users can see the characters come to life onscreen in a more vibrant and vivid way.

Q6. How do your designs reflect Samsung’s vision of personalization?

These designs perfectly reflect Samsung’s commitment to personalization. They allow users to choose from a variety of characters that cater to diverse interests — whether it’s music, sports or nature. These characters allow users to find a character that reflects their personality, along with many other watch faces options available for the Galaxy Watch6 series. Through these watch faces, I believe even more users will be able to tailor their wearable experiences. Users can also meet these characters in their Galaxy Z Flip5. Users can even match their watch face designs with the Galaxy Z Flip5’s Flex Window to create a more cohesive, personalized look.

What’s Next?

Q7. What does this collaboration with Samsung mean to you? What are your next steps?

I have a soft spot for projects that people can wear or interact with. Seeing so many individuals sporting my design on their wrists is huge! I always want my characters to help people express themselves, and this collaboration accomplished that. As users incorporate the Galaxy Watch6 series into their daily routines, it’s fulfilling to think that my designs might add an extra layer of happiness to their lifestyles whether they’re building healthier habits or improving their sleep cycles.

Looking ahead, my goal remains the same — to create work that brings smiles and spreads joy in all kinds of ways. For my next projects, I wish to continue designing playful worlds where people have fun. I absolutely loved this collaboration, and I hope to be working more with Samsung in the future!

Samsung Electronics Middle East & North Africa (MENA) launched the Galaxy Watch6 Classic Astro Edition, the first-ever limited-edition Galaxy Watch dedicated to the region. Inspired by MENA’s explorers and innovators, this device symbolizes the region’s legacy of contributions to the sciences — particularly astronomy and mathematics.

Among the first of several limited-edition collections of watches, the Galaxy Watch6 Classic Astro Edition aims to bridge the past with the future and honor the groundwork laid by historical pioneers. Inspired by the region’s explorers and astronomers, the Galaxy Watch6 Classic Astro Edition is a tribute to those committed to the sciences and crafted for those who dare to explore. The limited-edition watch’s timeless design features a rotating Black Astro bezel in 47mm. The contemporary Galaxy Watch6 Classic Astro Edition is reminiscent of an astrolabe in its design and software features, with a compass on the dial serving as a nod to the ancient device. In addition, the watch enables users to track movements of the sun and moon right from their wrist. The inclusion of a solar tracker pays tribute to the sun’s central role in the astrolabe’s astronomical observations, mirroring the sun’s daily journey from sunrise to sunset.

Recognizing that better health begins with better sleep, Samsung is helping users optimize their night in the same way they optimize their day by focusing on three key elements of better sleep: understanding personal sleep patterns, building better habits and establishing a sleep-friendly environment.

Building on leading-edge sleep and wellness features, Galaxy Watch6 series now offers in-depth analysis of Sleep Score Factors⁵ — total sleep time, sleep cycle, awake time, plus physical and mental recovery — to help users understand the quality of sleep received each night. More individualized Sleep Messages,⁵ co-developed with the National Sleep Foundation, also provide users with detailed feedback about their sleep health each morning. Additionally, Galaxy Watch6 offers Sleep Consistency showing how consistent the user’s sleep and wake times are, and a designated Sleep Animal Symbol representing their sleep type.⁶

Enhanced Sleep Coaching⁶ enables users to put sleep insights into action with tailored instructions, tips and reminders accessible on both their wrist and paired smartphone. When it’s time for bed, Galaxy Watch6 can help set the perfect sleep environment by automatically changing the settings of connected home electronics⁷ and turning on Sleep Mode across the user’s watch and phone⁸ to mute notifications, dim screens and even to activate the invisible LED infrared sensor on the watch to deliver valuable health insights without additional light distractions.

Fitness features get more personalized to keep users motivated throughout their journey. Body Composition,⁹ with key physical measurements like skeletal muscle, basal metabolic rate, body water and body fat percentage, provides a complete snapshot of the user’s body and fitness, offering a tailored approach to set goals, track progress, and guide through personalized fitness and now nutritional tips via a new partnership with Whisk.¹⁰

A new Personalized Heart Rate Zone feature analyzes individual physical capabilities¹¹ and defines five optimal running intensity levels to help users set their own goals based on their ability — from burning fat to high intensity workout. In addition to over 100 existing workout trackers, the newly added Track Run records the user’s runs on a track, while Custom Workout allows users to build and track their personalized workout routine.

Added to existing blood pressure¹² and electrocardiogram¹³ monitoring, the new Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification¹⁴ feature helps users understand their heart health more comprehensively by checking for heart rhythms suggestive of Atrial fibrillation (AFib) in the background — even while asleep.¹⁵ Galaxy Watch6 can also enable users to track skin temperature during the night to give valuable insights including menstrual cycle tracking.¹⁶ And Fall Detection¹⁷ can gauge a fall, whether occurring during exercise, when standing still, or even while sleeping if users happen to fall out of bed. Once a fall is detected, your watch will automatically alert an emergency service number or pre-selected contacts.

Refined Design, Perfectly Yours

Elevating the wearable experience, Galaxy Watch6 series offers all new designs that provide better viewing, greater power and a wider selection of more customizable and comfortable options.³

Reading and writing is easier on the 20% larger display,¹⁸ showcasing more text on screen and a larger keyboard¹⁹ — all while maintaining a comfortable size. A more vibrant, higher resolution display³ boasts a peak brightness of 2,000nits, coupled with an Always On Display brightness adjustment feature, allowing users to see and do more even under bright sunlight. Powered by the enhanced processor and memory, Galaxy Watch6 delivers smoother and faster interactions.³

Galaxy Watch6 and Watch6 Classic come with a 30% slimmer bezel and a 15% thinner rotating bezel respectively,²⁰ enhancing the beauty of the signature circle frame. Galaxy Watch6 series features new stylish, interactive and informative watch faces that make the most of the large display, while new one-click bands allow users to easily mix and match watch bands. With over 704 unique combinations, users can design their perfect watch on Samsung.com.²¹ For example, a new lightweight Fabric Band²² and Sleep Coaching watch face pair perfectly to help you gain informative sleep insights in comfort.

Galaxy Watch6 series comes with a larger battery and reduced battery consumption²³ to support its larger and brighter display. With just eight minutes of quick charge, users can add an additional eight hours, perfect for tracking their sleep during the night.²⁴

Maximizing Your Experience Right From Your Wrist²⁵

Galaxy Watch6 series brings greater capabilities to the wrist of every user. The new Samsung Wallet²⁶ on Galaxy Watch6 combines Samsung Pay with Samsung Pass to incorporate more of the user’s wallet — including IDs, event tickets and boarding passes as well as credit cards and membership cards — in their watch. Enhanced Gesture Control allows users to conveniently manage their watch using simple gestures for greater accessibility and ease, letting them set their own shortcuts and now access apps and functions touch-free.

WhatsApp makes it easier for Galaxy Watch users to stay connected with friends and family, all without getting out a phone. Starting from this fall, users can stay productive right from their watch with new apps from Google Calendar and Gmail, which will be exclusively available on Wear OS. They can also track fitness progress or nutritional data more easily with Peloton and MyFitnessPal updates, and coming soon, enjoy additional streaming options with Audible. Additionally, with the introduction of a new Skin Temperature API — a part of the Samsung’s Privileged Health software development kit (SDK) — partners will soon have access to advanced infrared technology for more accurate measurements to bring a whole new world of possibilities to users. A newly launched Thermo Check app takes advantage of the new API, allowing users to measure the temperature of their favorite meal or the ocean before a lap swim, contact-free.

Together with other Samsung devices, Galaxy Watch6 series expands user experiences even further. The upgraded Camera Controller enables remote control of a paired Galaxy Z Flip5 camera²⁷ to switch modes and zoom. Samsung Smart TV²⁸ or Galaxy Tab S9 shows the user’s progress in real time with a guided fitness or mindfulness program on the large screen. Users can also automatically toggle the connection of Galaxy Buds2 Pro between Samsung devices via Auto Switch. Should users happen to misplace their phone, Galaxy Watch6 series can now pinpoint its location through Find My Phone with map support.²⁹

And as always, personal data on the watch remains secure thanks to the Samsung Knox security platform.

• WhatsApp: In a new expansion of the unified Wear OS ecosystem, Galaxy Watch5 and Galaxy Watch4 users can now use WhatsApp’s first-ever smartwatch app. The app will let users continue conversations, reply to messages by voice and even answer calls, all without needing to take out their phones.⁴

Through the introduction of these new features, Samsung Galaxy Watch series will gain more versatile functions and a more streamlined usability. Samsung Electronics today announced that the Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature¹ on the Samsung Health Monitor app² will soon be available in 13 markets starting this summer. Combined with the app’s Blood Pressure³ and Electrocardiogram (ECG)⁴ monitoring, the IHRN feature detects heart rhythms suggestive of atrial fibrillation (AFib), helping Galaxy Watch users understand their heart health more comprehensively.

The IHRN feature has been approved by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) last week, following recent clearance by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It will also be introduced in Argentina, Azerbaijan, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Georgia, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Panama, UAE, as well as Korea and the U.S., taking the total to 13 markets.

Alongside the on-demand ECG tracking, the IHRN feature checks for irregular heart rhythms in the background and warns the user of potential AFib activity. Together with the existing Blood Pressure and Heart Rate⁵ monitoring, users can gain even deeper insights into their cardiovascular health.

Since the launch in 2020, the Samsung Health Monitor app has expanded to 74 markets⁶ across the globe. Over 15 million Galaxy Watch users have kept track of their blood pressure and ECG right from their wrist, gaining a better picture of their heart health by continuously monitoring and recording their blood pressure and heart rhythms.

Samsung Electronics today announced that the Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature¹ of the Samsung Health Monitor app² has received FDA clearance. Together with the app’s existing on-demand Electrocardiogram (ECG) function,³ the IHRN feature proactively monitors heart rhythms suggestive of atrial fibrillation (AFib), right from their wrist.

“We’re excited to announce that Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification, designed to help millions of people around the world who may not be aware of a potential heart risk, has been cleared by the FDA,” said Hon Pak, Vice President and Head of the Digital Health Team, MX Business at Samsung Electronics. “This is yet another example of how Samsung prioritizes proactive safety solutions and enables users to receive a more holistic understanding of their cardiovascular and overall health.”

Cardiovascular disease remains one of the world’s leading causes of death and AFib — a type of arrhythmia — is widely considered a warning sign for major cardiovascular issues that can increase the risk of stroke, heart failure and other cardiovascular complications. Moreover, some of AFib cases are asymptomatic or even silent, leaving people unaware of their risk.

That’s why Galaxy Watch offers tools to help users better understand their heart health using the Samsung BioActive Sensor, including on-demand ECG recording and HR Alert function⁴ that detects abnormally high or low heart rates. The addition of the new IHRN feature enables Galaxy Watch users to monitor another aspect of their health.

Once activated in the Samsung Health Monitor app, the feature will check for irregular heart rhythms in the background via Galaxy Watch’s BioActive Sensor. If a certain number of consecutive measurements are irregular, Galaxy Watch warns the user of potential AFib activity, prompting them to take an ECG using their watch for a more accurate measurement.

The Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification feature will be available as part of the newly announced One UI 5 Watch, coming first to the upcoming Galaxy Watch devices later this year and later expanding to previous editions.⁵

Better Sleep: Essential to Better Health

Samsung has focused its efforts on three key elements for better sleep: understanding personal sleep patterns, building healthy habits and establishing a sleep-friendly environment. One UI 5 Watch delivers on these elements with an even more complete sleep experience.

The new Sleep Insights UI prominently displays the user’s sleep score to provide a clearer snapshot of the prior night’s rest, followed by related metrics like sleep phases, snoring hours and blood oxygen levels. In addition, Sleep Coaching — tailored around eight different sleep types² — also becomes fully accessible directly on Galaxy Watch as well as a paired phone, making for a more convenient and motivational way for users to track their habits anytime, anywhere.

Creating a comfortable environment can make all the difference in sleep quality, and even small distractions can have outsized impacts. That’s why Samsung has made it easier to connect Galaxy Watch to a wide range of devices. Once the user’s Galaxy Watch detects that they have fallen asleep, SmartThings lets the user switch off their connected devices to create a more conducive environment for rest. Sleep Mode swiftly mutes notifications and dims the user’s phone and watch screens, and One UI 5 Watch builds on this feature by now utilizing an infrared sensor rather than a green LED light to further minimize distractions. 

A Smarter Fitness Partner

Personalized Heart Rate Zone has been added to Galaxy Watch’s various tailored running tools — including real-time running analysis and a customized interval training program. This new feature analyzes individual physical capabilities³ and sets five optimal workout intensity levels (warm-up, fat burn, cardio, hard-training and max. effort). This enables users to set their own goals based on their ability, from burning fat to high-impact cardio.

Outdoor activity enthusiasts with Galaxy Watch Pro can look forward to additional benefits, starting with an expanded Route Workout — which now supports running and walking alongside previously available hiking and cycling route options. Galaxy Watch Pro users can also search and access the GPX File Database directly via Samsung Health app, and receive recommendations on new routes based on inputs like location, time, rating or popularity.⁴

Safety First, Always On

Safety is a must when it comes to health and wellness, and One UI 5 Watch also offers improved tools for greater peace of mind. Updates to the SOS feature enable direct communication to an emergency service number to relay information on the wearer’s location,⁵ and also allow immediate access to the wearer’s Medical Information once an SOS is activated. In addition, Fall Detection is now activated by default for users of advanced ages⁶ to help lower the risk of emergencies. These are just some of the examples of Samsung’s ongoing efforts to enhance user safety.

One UI 5 Watch will be available first on the upcoming Galaxy Watch series later this year with further updates to be announced soon. Galaxy Watch5 and Galaxy Watch4 series users in the U.S. and Korea can register for the beta program starting in May via Samsung Members app.

Samsung Electronics today announced that skin temperature measurement¹ is added to its existing calendar-based Cycle Tracking feature. Galaxy Watch5 and Galaxy Watch5 Pro users can now conveniently get even deeper insights to manage their menstrual cycles and overall health. Starting today, the new feature will be progressively released via Samsung Health app updates² in Korea, the U.S. and 30 European markets.³

As people search for ways to forecast their next period, they’re turning to temperature readings to help, since basal body temperature (BBT) varies by menstrual phase. BBT needs to be measured immediately after waking and prior to any physical activity or impact from surroundings. Getting accurate BBT readings requires measurement the first thing every morning, a process that can be inconvenient and sometimes even forgotten. Samsung’s new feature automates this process, making it easier and more convenient.

The Cycle Tracking feature is powered by Natural Cycles. Integrated with Samsung’s sensor technology, it enables users to track skin temperature changes, a good estimate of basal body temperature, during sleep right from their wrist. Galaxy Watch5 series uses infrared technology for more accurate readings, even if conditions of surroundings change. The advanced Cycle Tracking helps users track ovulation and better predict when their next period will begin.

To activate, users select Cycle Tracking in the Samsung Health app, add their most recent cycle information into the calendar and then turn on “Predict period with skin temp” in the settings. Readings collected over the prior month are displayed as a graph in Cycle Tracking, showing users their period as well as their predicted ovulation and fertile window. All collected data is encrypted and stored securely on the user’s own device, giving them more control over their data.

Cycle Tracking also evaluates symptoms entered into the daily log and provides relevant information and tips based on them, such as scheduling a day to relax to address fatigue or exercising gently to relieve premenstrual pelvic pain. In addition, Samsung Health app⁴ suggests useful content to help better manage holistic health during cycles, such as guided stretching or meditation classes to reduce stress and achieve a better night’s sleep — a key to a healthier self.

Samsung Electronics and Natural Cycles today announced a partnership to bring advanced temperature-based menstrual cycle tracking capabilities to the Galaxy Watch5 series — the first time Natural Cycles’ ground-breaking algorithm has been adapted for a smartwatch. This latest partnership combines Samsung’s superior sensor technology with Natural Cycles’ innovative fertility technology to give users more detailed insight into their menstrual cycle.

Galaxy Watch5 users will be able to access advanced cycle tracking through the Cycle Tracking feature, which was recently approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) of the Republic of Korea. The Cycle Tracking feature has also been registered with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and complies with CE Marking requirements.¹

360 Audio Recording: Capture the World as You Hear It

The new 360 Audio Recording feature¹ empowers users to capture sound on video precisely as they hear it. Pairing Galaxy Buds2 Pro with a Galaxy smartphone, everyone can film like a pro and capture high-quality, realistic audio for video without the need for bulky professional equipment anytime, anywhere. The feature picks up 360-degree sound using a microphone in each earbud, placing viewers at the center of a roaring festival crowd or beside a bubbling brook in the middle of a forest. Users can pop in connected headphones and playback the video on their device or social media channel to hear lifelike and immersive sounds that emulate an in-person experience.

360 Audio Recording is the first feature in the Galaxy line leveraging LE Audio, an advanced new Bluetooth audio standard. Health Services: New Fall Detection API for Enhanced Safety Capabilities

Health Services provides APIs that allow developers and third parties to harness the powerful sensors and algorithms on the Galaxy Watch for more accurate and advanced health offerings. Samsung is introducing a new API to the ecosystem that offers adjustable sensitivity for Fall Detection, strengthening preventative safety and setting the stage for even more potential offerings.

Developers can now create services using Galaxy Watch’s Fall Detection algorithms that sense a user’s stumble or fall by combining different sensors including an accelerometer and gyroscope. This API enables development of apps for users who may encounter unexpected accidents. Furthermore, Galaxy users are even able to adjust sensitivity levels — whether standing still, moving, or exercising — via the Galaxy Wearable app. Like sleep tracking that senses restless movements or falls from bed to paint a more complete picture of a user’s sleep, this API opens all new opportunities for developers and users alike.

End-to-End Research Solution: Accelerating Medical Service and Research

Samsung is also introducing an open-source project that provides end-to-end solutions combining SDK, backend system and portal for a variety of health applications. This all-in-one healthcare toolset empowers research and clinical experiences — starting at the developer level — by delivering advanced insights through Galaxy Watches and wearables to support medical research at institutions, hospitals, wellness centers and beyond.

Researchers can use this open source project to build modules that enable participants to join a study in a frictionless and informed way, streamlining the onboarding process. Flexible survey templates are also in place to satisfy the ever-changing needs of organizations. From there, relevant data and insights are gathered more easily from wearable devices, while participants are guided with actionable insights throughout the process. Health Connect: Greater Insights and Data Control

Health Connect, announced in collaboration with Google during the spring of 2022, offers developers a single set of APIs enabling the seamless creation of new fitness and health experiences. Currently available in beta, Health Connect offers users centralized privacy controls that make it easy to give permission to the health and fitness apps they want to share their on-device data with. Now, Samsung Health and Fitbit, along with leading health and fitness apps including Leap Fitness, MyFitnessPal and Withings have adopted Health Connect to enable a more impactful and holistic wellness experience. And with a user’s permission, app developers can leverage certain data shared through Health Connect for use in their own applications in order to provide users with a more complete picture of their health.

Being well rested can, for example, help people work more productively, drive more safely and think more clearly.

Given the impact that the pandemic had on our daily habits, it is worth exploring how our sleep may have changed as a result.

Let’s take a closer look at how sleep duration and efficiency changed across the globe since the start of the pandemic through the sleep patterns of global Samsung Health users.

Sleep Duration Versus Efficiency: Why It Matters

When it comes to sleep, longer duration does not necessarily mean better quality. For the purpose of this analysis, duration refers to the amount of time in bed trying to sleep, while sleep efficiency measures the percentage of time in bed that we actually spend sleeping.

While changes in lifestyle habits during the pandemic saw individuals globally sleeping longer, there seems to be no correlation between sleep duration and sleep efficiency.

In fact, despite people in all countries enjoying longer sleep times on average than before the pandemic, we actually experienced an overall decrease in sleep efficiency.

What’s more, the results varied by sex. While both males and females are resting more than they were prior to the pandemic, males are not only seeing a longer increase in sleep duration, they are also seeing a larger decrease in sleep efficiency compared to females.

Age is another factor providing interesting insights. While all age groups slept longer, sleep efficiency in fact decreased as age increased. The exception here is people between the ages of 20 and 39, who actually experienced a jump in sleep efficiency. Furthermore, this age group was the only one showing a significant increase in both duration and efficiency.

How the Pandemic Changed Regional Sleep Habits

We also undertook a deep dive into the 16 countries where individuals use Samsung Health the most to see how sleep habit trends varied by region. While all 16 countries saw an increase in sleep duration — with people, on average, waking up later than they used to — the effect on sleep efficiency was mixed.

Region-specific changes in global sleeping habits can be seen as follows:

• While sleep duration remained the longest — both pre- and post-pandemic — in France, the country’s sleep efficiency decreased.
• Users in Korea recorded one of the biggest increases in sleep duration and efficiency during the pandemic but still remained under the global average.
• The U.S. saw the biggest dip in sleep efficiency out of all the regions measured.
• While Germany saw the highest global sleep efficiency scores before the pandemic, it has since witnessed one of the most significant decreases in sleep efficiency.
• Argentina recorded the highest sleep efficiency following the start of the pandemic.
• While Indonesia was the region with the lowest sleep efficiency before the pandemic, this distinction now belongs to Vietnam. Furthermore, out of the 16 countries studied, Indonesia saw the highest increase in sleep efficiency from pre- to post-pandemic levels.
• Indonesia also saw a wake-up time delay of 11 minutes on average following the start of the pandemic. It was and remains the region recording the earliest wake-up times.
• Mexico is the region that has seen the biggest change in wake-up and sleep times. Going-to-bed time changed by 11 minutes on average, and wake-up time was delayed by 17 minutes.
