Total of 80 Awards, From Product to UX Design, Including TVs, Home Appliances and Smartphones

Samsung Electronics’ 80 wins across all design categories, including Product and UX, were the most of any nominee at this year’s awards.

In addition to the Bespoke Infinite Line’s Gold Award, Samsung received awards in the Product category for the Odyssey Ark, the world’s first 55-inch 1000R curved gaming screen; the Bespoke Jet, a cordless stick vacuum with an all-in-one Clean Station; and the Galaxy Z Flip4 Bespoke edition, a smartphone that offers an exclusive customization experience by allowing users to design a device that is uniquely theirs.

360 Audio Recording: Capture the World as You Hear It

The new 360 Audio Recording feature¹ empowers users to capture sound on video precisely as they hear it. Pairing Galaxy Buds2 Pro with a Galaxy smartphone, everyone can film like a pro and capture high-quality, realistic audio for video without the need for bulky professional equipment anytime, anywhere. The feature picks up 360-degree sound using a microphone in each earbud, placing viewers at the center of a roaring festival crowd or beside a bubbling brook in the middle of a forest. Users can pop in connected headphones and playback the video on their device or social media channel to hear lifelike and immersive sounds that emulate an in-person experience.

360 Audio Recording is the first feature in the Galaxy line leveraging LE Audio, an advanced new Bluetooth audio standard. This new technology brings better audio quality as well as improved latency and battery life. Beyond providing better-sounding music, LE Audio also broadens the spectrum of audio experiences to deliver more complex and rich sound that can be shared with others. One example is the Galaxy Watch’s Camera Controller app, which enables users to control their phone camera right from their wrist. A new update — soon to be available on the Galaxy Watch5 and Watch4 series — adds zoom capabilities to Camera Controller,² further expanding the Galaxy camera experience with Galaxy smartphone and Galaxy Watch connectivity. Now users can remotely control their phone’s camera zoom with a simple pinch of the watch face or a turn of the rotating bezel — perfect for taking group selfies or group shots from a distance and eliminating the need to run back and forth to the camera to frame the perfect picture.

Creating a Radical Design

• Galaxy Z Flip4: Maison Margiela’s signature solid white color with a matte finish was “weaved” into the smartphone with a drop of grey to create the optimal shade of white. The phone also embraces Maison Margiela’s décortiqué technique, which strips back an object’s outer layers to expose its core, featuring fine, translucent lines which signify the internal circuits of the phone.
• UX: A completely new UX design, including wallpaper artworks and icons, have been tailor-made for this special edition. The paintbrush artwork was designed with an advanced 3D modelling technique to capture the texture of a rough brush stroke. The inverted phone also captures the scanning motion of an X-ray to create a see-through look.
• Accessories: The special edition comes with two iconic phone cases. First, a unique leather cover that reflects the house’s iconic bianchetto technique, which reduces an object down to the simple beauty of a white canvas and its four stitches emblem, which signifies anonymity. The case is overpainted to create a unique texture to act like a canvas which could change over time. The second cover is a spin on Maison Margiela’s emblematic numeric coding ring, evoking the house’s DNA.

The box is a work of art in itself, playing with the house’s revisited idea of inversion and exposing the rough surface of the inner pulp material to provide a packaging design that has never been seen before.

If you upload a selfie on social media with the hashtag #GalaxyExperienceRJ, the photo shows up on the large billboard in the shape of the Galaxy Z Flip4 cover display, which is located in Copacabana, one of the busiest neighborhoods in the city. In addition, the clock billboards installed in four places in São Paulo caught the attention of the public, as the billboards physically fold and unfold like the devices themselves.

Eye-Catching and Convenient Galaxy Z Flip4-Shaped Chairs in Belgium

In Belgium, Samsung installed chairs in the shape of the Galaxy Z Flip4 in bus stops. The phones can be used as actual chairs, providing both a convenient seat and a fun display for those waiting for the bus. The playful bus stop marketing began on August 26 and ran for about a month in five different places, including the luxury street Avenue Louise in Brussels and the street of the Antwerp Opera in Belgium.

Unleash Your Creativity With the Galaxy Z Flip4 FlexCam in Japan

Marketing in Japan for the Galaxy Z Flip4 showcased both the phone’s water resistant capability and FlexCam feature. By folding the phone in half and placing it in a tank filled with water, the phone camera captured a striking and imaginative photo showing goldfish flying in the sky. The campaign evoked a positive response and exploded in popularity in just under a month, racking up 240,000 likes in Japan in 20 days. The unique content generated curiosity among viewers, resulting in many comments of people wanting to try out the smartphone for themselves. The techniques used to make this content can be seen on the Instagram account of the Japanese influencer (@aaa_tsushi_).

A Phone That Moves With You in the Czech Republic

Starting on August 22, a purple tram displaying one of the iconic colors of the Galaxy Z Flip4 will be running throughout the city of Prague in the Czech Republic. Additionally, the Z Flip’s FlexCam has been shaped to match the tram’s window, making tram passengers appear as though they are subjects being filmed by the phone. More trams in different routes will feature this decorative wrapping until February of next year, helping to transport passengers while capturing the attention of those in the city.

Light up the Night With Galaxy Z Series in Taiwan

Combining both the latest technology and the new Galaxy smartphone devices, Samsung unveiled its Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 through a captivating drone show at Riyue Tan (Sun Moon Lake) in Taiwan. As the phones are both vertically and horizontally symmetrical, their design resembles a mirror. Similarly, the reflection of the Moon on the lake surface also has a mirror-like quality. Inspired by this imagery, Samsung Electronics Taiwan selected Sun Moon Lake for the site of the drone show, hoping to create synergy through the event with the similarities between the product and the location.

During the show, a total of 500 drones, which were synchronized and arranged over a training period of 30 days, were equipped with bright lights and moved throughout the sky to form the silhouettes of the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 as well as the word “Galaxy” and more. The drones decorated the night sky and touched the hearts of those at the event.

To help users understand more about the foldable technology from an engineering perspective, Samsung Newsroom sat down with Dr. Won-Joon Choi, Executive Vice President, Head of Flagship Product R&D Team and Technology Strategy Team at Mobile eXperience Business, Samsung Electronics.

As a leader of Samsung’s flagship product R&D team, the Q&A below includes some of the latest breakthroughs and exclusive insights on the fourth-generation of Galaxy Z series.

Q: What is your approach to improving the hardware design of Samsung’s lineup of foldables?

Not only have we accumulated engineering knowledge from the three previous generations of foldables, but we’ve also received customer feedback along the way that has been extremely valuable to advancing the Z Fold4 and Z Flip4. When we address customer feedback, most of the time, we must overcome technological limitations, which require new approaches when compared to conventional bar-type smartphones. To bring foldable technology to millions and make the foldable device category mainstream, we focused on the following areas: enhancing durability for everyday use, providing perfect balance of on-the-go experiences and optimized large-screen experiences and maintaining the ultimate performance which is the fundamental of the Galaxy smartphones.

Q: How does the updated hinge in Z Flip4 and Z Fold4 make everyday use more comfortable for users?

For Z Flip, our users wanted the form factor to be even more compact. For Z Fold, our users liked to leverage both the Main Display and Cover Screen and accomplish tasks one-handed.

So, our solution was to redesign the hinge on both devices. Our previous Hinge design was an engineering feat and enabled the foldable experience we see today. However, we knew internally that we would need to simplify the design to manufacture it at an even greater scale and meet the needs of the mainstream users.

By creating this new hinge, we could further slim down the Z Flip4 design to make it even more compact. It also allowed us to modify the dimensions on Z Fold4. Now, the device has a slightly wider and slightly shorter Cover Screen, enabling a more comfortable experience while typing on the go and doing other tasks on the Cover Screen. While these under-the-hood changes may feel incremental, they go a long way in the consumer experience.

Beyond offering users comfortable use, redesigning the hinge also brings benefits to both manufacturing and longevity. We reduced the number of components by 60%. This is a feat in itself because this means that fewer components could potentially need repair, and it’s easier to manufacture at a larger scale.

Q: Z Flip and Z Fold users love creating content with high-quality cameras. Do the latest devices offer users any new experiences or features?

We took care to upgrade the cameras in both devices. We wanted to give our consumers the advantages of Nightography, first introduced on S22, on both Z Flip and Z Fold. However, this required adding larger camera lenses to bring in more light. By redesigning the hinge, we were able to secure more space for the component that could fit our new camera systems without making the device thicker.

Q: How has the fourth generation Z series been made lighter? How will this benefit the end user?

Over the past several generations, we have been focused on shaving down the weight of Z Fold series. We know this is a critically important factor to get right on foldables because the value proposition of these devices is to offer new experiences without compromise.

This year, we focused on reducing the weight of the display and hinge, resulting in a device that weighs 263 grams, which is 8 grams lighter than Z Fold3 and nearly 20 grams lighter than Z Fold2 (282g). This subtle yet continuous refinement makes a big difference over generations.

To accomplish this, we restructured and optimized number of internal components including display and hinge. Reducing the display weight contributed much to overall weight. We redesigned the structure and materials of the layers and by doing so, the display of Z Fold4 is not only 15% lighter than the previous generation but also 45% stronger. Combined with the redesigned hinge, which is 21% lighter than the one used on Z Fold3, Z Fold4 offers a noticeable difference in weight. This results in a more comfortable, portable and convenient user experience.

Q: Samsung has received feedback in the past regarding Z Flip’s battery life. How has the battery life been extended in the Z Flip4?

One of the biggest pieces of feedback we received from Z Flip3 was about its battery life. Since a foldable smartphone is divided into two parts and joined together with a hinge, naturally, it has limitations to its internal space when compared to conventional bar-type smartphones. However, by making the hinge slim and reconfiguring internal mechanical design, it allowed us to secure extra space for bigger battery. Together with more efficient performance, users are now able to enjoy longer battery life compared to previous generation.

Q: Galaxy users care about having an immersive viewing experience on their devices. How and why has the Under Display Camera (UDC) on Z Fold been improved in this latest iteration?

We created the UDC technology to provide an uninterrupted viewing experience on the 7.6-inch Main Display. This was the first of its kind on a foldable, and with Z Fold4, we were able to make the experience even better.

We reconfigured the pixels on top of the camera to improve the perceived resolution and thus make the camera even more unnoticeable. We changed the sub-pixel arrangement from a cluster-type to a scatter-type, increasing grid pattern visibility and improving the readability of texts. As a result, watching content, playing games and reading are uninterrupted on the Main Display.

Q: The key element to Samsung’s foldables is Ultra Thin Glass (UTG). Can you tell us more about how you created this durable material that can be folded hundreds of thousands of times?

When we developed the first generation of the Galaxy Fold, we made the foldable screens using flexible polyimide. But we knew we would need to make something more durable to make foldables mainstream.

This is how the first Ultra Thin Glass was created. It is a highly complex material that has to come through countless steps from the raw material. We first receive sheets of thin glass, which are thinner than a single human hair, from our partners before they are coated and cut to precise dimensions. Then, we undergo a delicate process of smoothing and polishing the glass surface. This ensures the material is structurally sound and ready for installation. Finally, they are given a strenuous durability test before being added to a Z series device.

Each step has been refined every year to get us where we are today, producing millions of components for our devices durable enough to give our users peace of mind in their everyday usage.

To help users understand more about the journey of foldable UX design evolution, Samsung Newsroom sat down with Yoojin Hong, Executive Vice President and Head of User Experience, Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics. As a leader in the global UX design of Samsung mobile products, the Q&A below includes exclusive insights on all things flippable and foldable.

Read on to learn more about Samsung’s goals for the Z Flip4 and Z Fold4 and the process behind the smartphones’ flexible and bold designs.

Q: What inspired the creation of Samsung’s lineup of foldables? How has the device enabled new experiences for users?

As smartphones became an essential companion in our daily lives, users began to demand larger screens, and the race was on to deliver just that. At the same time, users wanted pocket-sized and portable devices — two seemingly opposing asks. So this posed the question, how could we reconcile these demands while solving the problem? Samsung’s solution was simple, though not easy: fold the screen.

While this was a huge undertaking in itself, developing folding screen technology was only the beginning. Once we had these new form factors, we realized that designing UX for a foldable was different from a traditional smartphone. We had to rethink the smartphone experience entirely. We also discovered, over time, that these new form factors had the potential to change people’s relationships with their phones. Changes in form factor also lead to new life patterns, and not just for advanced users, but for everyday users. Foldables met evolving user needs in surprising ways.

Q: What is Samsung’s UX design philosophy for foldable?

When creating a user experience on a phone, most companies only need to account for a single static screen. But foldables are moving devices with two screens, so the UX must be more fluid. This has been the basis of our entire design philosophy since the beginning.

Our design philosophy for foldables revolves around two foundations. First, UX design that is new yet familiar. Foldables offer consumers a new form factor, which delivers a variety of different and innovative benefits. However, while the user experience is new, it shouldn’t be unfamiliar — there should not be a steep learning curve. For foldables, we design with the idea that the UI should be almost invisible. It should be so intuitive that users are instantly familiar and can navigate with ease.

The second foundation is to remember that foldables are tools that help users create. Smartphones have evolved from literal phones to devices that can unlock creativity through photography, art, gaming and more. We want to ensure our UX enhances these experiences.

Since that first Galaxy Fold, we’ve launched a new generation of foldable phones every year. These phones have evolved in so many unexpected ways — some of which were planned from the beginning, while others were guided by our learnings over time in addition to the invaluable feedback from our users.

Q: What are the differences in the user base between Z Flip series and Z Fold series?

Z Flip series and Z Fold series are both foldables, but they have very different form factors with distinct user bases. Z Flip users see their devices as a form of self-expression and enjoy the versatility and personalization the form factor provides. Z Fold users gravitate to the large-screen experience with the ability to do and see more at once. They love getting things done quickly and then having more time to focus on what’s more important to them.

These separate user bases also gave distinct feedback on the previous generations, which led to our focus areas for Z Flip4 and Z Fold4. For Z Flip, we wanted to give even more ways for users to express themselves and personalize their experiences. For Z Fold, we wanted to enhance large-screen interactions, specifically around multitasking.

What’s important to remember, however, is that these new devices are not just for advanced smartphone users — they’re for everyone.

Q: How have the UI and customization features been improved for the latest Z Flip4?

With Z Flip4, users can personalize the entire look of their device, from the hardware color, accessories, Main Screen UI — and now Cover Screen UI. Customization goes beyond simply decorating a phone’s UX — it also includes customizing the user experience. The Z Flip4 offers a new level of Cover Screen functionality, where users can not only customize the Cover Screen design but also take advantage of a variety of useful widgets and other functions.

We also noticed that Z Flip users were taking advantage of the unique photo-capturing experiences offered by the form factor. So, on Z Flip4, we continued to provide features that promoted self-expression and enhanced the UI of the camera to open up new possibilities for the FlexCam.

Q: How is UI improved users boost their productivity and save time with the new Z Fold 4?

We’ve improved interactions and eliminated steps in activating settings and redesigned menus and layouts to bring action buttons closer together. This is important on a large screen as it reduces the amount of finger “reaching required” for the most common inputs.

We also wanted to simplify the large-screen experience by enabling faster app switching and activation. To accomplish this, we’ve added Taskbar, a familiar app bar that can always be activated, no matter what app you’re using.

Finally, we’re also giving more flexibility in how multiple apps can be viewed on the screen with finger gestures that enable a split window or pop-up window. One-finger swiping at a corner makes the currently used app shown on a pop-up window. Two-finger swiping on the right, left or bottom makes the currently used app split in half. This allows you to be more productive, so you can achieve more in your daily life.

Q: How have Samsung’s collaborations set the foundation for the entire foldables market?

We have worked with Google to create this ecosystem together from the beginning, often inspiring each other to develop new features or technologies. From the beginning, we worked closely with Google to fulfill our foldable vision, even collaborating at the code level to modify Android to meet the needs of foldable devices. We knew we would need to enhance Android to run effectively on new screen dimensions, and this work served as step one of our foldables journey long before any hardware was announced.

And, of course, we continue to work with our biggest partners, including Google, Meta and Microsoft, to bring optimized experiences on foldables to life. Now, apps like Chrome, Gmail and Microsoft’s full Office suites and Outlook take advantage of the Z Fold series’ large screen for the ultimate multitasking experience. Thanks to our partnership with Meta, FlexCam is optimized for the most popular social platforms, including Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook.

I believe it is extremely important to both build a Foldable ecosystem to diversify user experiences and continue to expand the app ecosystem through an open collaboration philosophy.

Q: User behavior — and thus, user experience — is constantly evolving. How would you summarize your approach to keeping up with new consumer demands?

In our previous devices, we approached our UX design by starting with what was necessary and tackling the challenges. Then, we developed new technologies to provide more screen space while keeping the devices compact. The new designs didn’t just solve existing problems; they also transformed user behavior, changing the way people take photos, interact with their phones and more. These new behaviors have become natural parts of the everyday lives of the people who use foldable phones.

They also, of course, create all new challenges — and that’s what drives us forward as UX designers. Users imagine new possibilities, and those possibilities become demands. It’s our responsibility to create the innovations to meet them. As the cycle of innovation continues, we’re excited to get to work building the foundation for what’s next.

Launched in conjunction with this August’s Galaxy Unpacked 2022 event, Galaxy Experience has showcased the all-new Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 via immersive spaces and interactive activities. The London and New York events saw over 106,000 participants visit the spaces over their 21-day opening period, which took place from August 11 to August 31.

The San Francisco Galaxy Experience will run for three weeks, this coming October, letting attendees get hands-on with new devices including Galaxy Z Fold4, Galaxy Z Flip4, the Galaxy Watch5 series and Galaxy Buds2 Pro, and exciting features and experiences. The Galaxy Experience will also feature fun programs such as a pin collection and photo challenges. Participants will be able to receive special gifts, including a Galaxy x BTS giveaway.

The event will be held at 111 Powell Street in San Francisco and will run from October 7 to October 28. By simply pressing the side button twice, you can activate Quick Shot. This feature allows users to take high-resolution selfies by using the main cameras of Z Flip4 right from the Cover Screen. With the enhanced Quick Shot that now supports a preview on the Cover Screen reflecting the actual photo ratio as well as Portrait Mode, you can snap top-quality photos whenever and wherever you are. You can even use the closed Z Flip4 as a mirror to quickly check your look before heading out.

∠ 75 degrees: Craft Your Own Photoshoot Experience With FlexCam

Capture photos and videos from different points of view with bolder angles than ever before with Z Flip4. With FlexCam, you can use your Galaxy Z Flip4 cameras at different folded angles, opening up a broad range of new perspectives never before possible on conventional smartphones — giving you more control than ever over your selfies.

The high-resolution main cameras and the Cover Screen photo previews do more than enable great selfies. These features can work together with Z Flip4’s wide spectrum of angles to provide dynamic, full-body shots, transforming your smartphone into an adjustable tripod that fits right in your pocket. Take total control of your image and get stylish, flattering angles without needing to carry around accessories or ask others to take photos for you. You can even angle Z Flip4 at 75 degrees and place it on the ground for bold, stylistic shots that wouldn’t be out of place on the cover of a fashion magazine.

∠ 90 degrees: Camera Features That Power Content Creation and Versatile Photography

Today, more users than ever are creating and enjoying short-form video content, like Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, and Galaxy Z Flip4 is the perfect companion for it. Designed with the preferences of Millennials and Generation Z in mind, Z Flip4 allows you to conveniently create online content. For example, you can take a vlog using the high-quality video recording in Quick Shot mode and then seamlessly switch to Flex mode to continue recording hands-free — all without ever stopping the video.

Samsung Electronics provided an unforgettable experience for its guests, who were invited to try out the latest Galaxy devices with their friends, enjoy live music performances and even participate in a FlexCam content creation competition.

Among other influencers and celebrities, the New York event was attended by Millie Bobby Brown, a British actress and producer, and Sabrina Carpenter, an American singer, songwriter and actress.

In London, the event was attended by Jamie Campbell Bower, an English actor and singer, and English singer-songwriters Jorja Smith and Charli XCX.

The glitzy after-party in New York featured memorable performances by Sabrina Carpenter and DJ Kaytranada. Meanwhile, in London, attendees enjoyed performances from singer-songwriter Charli XCX and DJ Jungle.

Furthermore, Galaxy Z Flip4’s Cover Screen provides even richer user experiences. The continued layout of the Taskbar from the Hotseat provides more visual consistency, and users can create a Taskbar with their most frequently-used apps to switch back and forth between them seamlessly. At this year’s Galaxy Unpacked, Samsung Electronics unveiled two never-before-seen digital films starring BTS at iconic public places across several major cities including Times Square in New York City, Piccadilly Circus in London, Kudamm in Berlin (August 10 at 4 p.m. EST), and COEX in Seoul(August 13 at 12 p.m. KST).

The first digital film, “Galaxy x BTS: Unfold your world with Z Flip4,” highlighted new experiences offered by the Galaxy Z Flip4. The video, featuring “Yet To Come (The Most Beautiful Moment)” by BTS, celebrated Samsung’s newest shade Bora Purple and showed a future full of potential and possibility. At the event, Samsung Newsroom met with two attendees excited to try out the devices for the first time: Vueey Le, an Australian commercial photographer, and Kendall Forbes, a proud Samsung user from New Zealand.

For Vueey Le, the standout device was the Galaxy Z Fold4. “As a photographer, I always try to find ways to keep my equipment as small and light as possible,” said Le. “It’s great for capturing behind-the-scenes shots and quick snaps. I could leave my tablet at home.”

Meanwhile, Kendall Forbes was most excited about the Galaxy Z Flip4. “I love its compactness,” said Forbes. “The fact that it would fit in any of my pockets is amazing.”

Galaxy for the Planet

Since the launch of the Galaxy S22 series, Samsung has incorporated recycled materials not just in our packaging, but also in the hardware of our new products. These are the first steps in our Galaxy for the Planet initiative, which includes our continued incorporation of recycled plastics and the creation of new materials in partnership with leading sustainability partners. As we continue to pursue innovations in sustainable manufacturing, we are proud to announce that more than 90 percent of the new Galaxy Buds2 Pro is made with recycled materials.³¹ The new Galaxy Z series also incorporates ocean-bound plastics into key components and 100 percent recycled paper for its packaging. We also reduced volume of the packaging up to 58 percent³² compared to the first-generation Galaxy foldables. This equates to an avoidance of approximately 10,000 tons of carbon emissions from transportation this year.³³

Availability

Galaxy Z Flip4 complements users’ styles with premium designs in legacy colors: Bora Purple and Graphite and new colors: Pink Gold and Blue.³⁴ The expanded Galaxy Z Flip4 Bespoke Edition³⁵ now available in 28 countries worldwide, offers glass colors and frame options that provide 75 combinations to choose from, allowing customers to completely control the look of their device. Samsung is also offering Bespoke Upgrade Care³⁶ for Galaxy Z Flip4 Bespoke Edition users, so they can change their device color whenever they want to. Samsung Electronics announces today that it has made progress towards achieving the 2025 sustainability goals for the MX(Mobile eXperience) Business. Key initiatives include developing and incorporating recycled materials into products, designing more eco-conscious packaging and giving new life to older Samsung Galaxy devices to reduce e-waste.

Since announcing the Galaxy for the Planet vision at Unpacked in August 2021, Samsung has worked diligently to create new ways to recycle and repurpose resources that would otherwise become harmful waste, minimize its environmental footprint and inspire innovation that helps preserve the planet. Today, Samsung is sharing the progress so far on its sustainability journey.

Expanding the Use of Recycled Materials to the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4

Developing new, recycled materials is a key focus area for Galaxy for the Planet. The more Samsung recycles, the more resources it preserves. While repurposing materials into Galaxy devices presents many challenges, the benefits for the planet make it well worth the effort.

Samsung designed the new Galaxy Z series and Galaxy Buds2 Pro with repurposed fishing nets, or ghost nets, that could otherwise end up in the ocean.

First integrated into the Galaxy S22 series in February 2022, today there are eleven Galaxy devices that use repurposed fishing nets including Galaxy Book2 Pro series and Galaxy Tab S8 series as well. By repurposing abandoned fishing nets into a high-performance material for Galaxy technology, Samsung helps to minimize the effects of plastic pollution — 640,000 tons of fishing nets are abandoned and pollute the world’s oceans every year.¹

Repurposing discarded fishing nets is only one example of Samsung’s advancements in increasing its use of recycled materials in its products.

Samsung has incorporated eco-conscious materials including repurposed fishing nets, post-consumer materials (PCM) or bio-based resin into 90% of Galaxy devices launched in the past year.² For the Galaxy Buds2 Pro, more than 90% of the plastic components are made with partly recycled materials.³

This process requires complex engineering and technical skills to ensure the overall quality, safety and reliability of all new materials for Samsung’s innovative technologies. Samsung plans to make further investments in research and development to source and transform other, new materials for use in Galaxy products and to increase the presence of recycled materials in each device. 

Changing the Way Galaxy Products Are Packaged

Samsung set a goal to eliminate all single-use plastics in mobile product packaging by 2025, and the company has already reduced a sizeable amount of single-use plastics in its current packaging for Galaxy smartphones including the new Galaxy foldables. Samsung will explore more ways to eliminate single-use plastics in packaging by assessing every aspect of its packaging designs, down to the smallest of details.

Starting with the launch of the Galaxy S22 series, Samsung now uses 100% recycled paper for flagship product packaging.

By doing so, Samsung will be able to save the equivalent of nearly 51,000 trees⁴ with the Galaxy S22 series and the new Galaxy Z series this year.

Samsung has also reduced the volume of packaging for Galaxy Z Flip4 by 52.8% and for Galaxy Z Fold4 by 58.2% respectively compared to the first-generation Galaxy foldables. By reducing each device package’s volume, Samsung ultimately reduces its environmental footprint in transporting these units using trucks, planes and ships. The company estimates that this reduction in packaging volume equates to a reduction in carbon emissions from transportation of approximately 10,000 tons by the end of 2022.⁵ In addition to continually evolving packaging for flagship smartphones, Samsung will expand eco-conscious packaging to other product categories.

Scaling Solutions That Reduce E-waste

More than ever, reducing e-waste is crucial to advancing a circular economy that preserves and repurposes the planet’s finite resources. According to the World Economic Forum, 57 million tons of e-waste was generated in 2021, and it is expected to grow by 2 million tons per year.⁶

To address this, Samsung has been expanding the Galaxy Upcycling program, which gives new life to older Galaxy smartphones. Through Galaxy Upcycling at Home,⁷ Samsung repurposes smartphones with a simple software update that turns them into smart home devices that support everyday needs, such as childcare and pet care.

An important part of Galaxy Upcycling is ensuring that these sustainable practices not only support the environment but also improve people’s lives. The company also upcycles secondhand Galaxy devices into medical diagnosis equipment called EYELIKE fundus cameras that provide necessary eye care services in underserved communities. This program has already upcycled hundreds of Galaxy devices and provided basic eye care for over 13,000 patients in Vietnam, Morocco, India and Papua New Guinea.

The Path Forward

Samsung has set clear sustainability goals by scaling solutions across its business. Whether it is repurposing discarded fishing nets for Galaxy devices, striving to achieve plastic-free packaging or moving us forward to achieve zero waste to landfill and zero standby power of smartphone chargers, Samsung is realizing its Galaxy for the Planet vision one step at a time.

There will be more challenges along the way, but Samsung will hold itself accountable and continue to report progress on its mission to effect positive change and inspire others to protect the planet for generations to come.
