Hands-On Experiences With Galaxy Watch8 During Marathon Weekend

At the Vredestein 20km de Paris Expo, Galaxy Watch8 and Samsung Health took center stage with interactive activities that showcased how wearable technology enhances running performance and recovery:

• Running: Visitors measured their heart rate with Galaxy Watch8 while running on a self-powered treadmill.
• Sleep Insights: Guests discovered their sleep animal type and received personalized sleep tips.

Samsung’s RunnerzZz Program united a global community of passionate runners from seven countries, spreading the spirit of “Sleep Better, Run Better.” Participants experienced Galaxy Watch8 firsthand during pre-race jogs and the 20km race. By sharing their experiences on social media, they inspired others to pursue healthier lifestyles supported by wearable technology.

The weekend concluded with the 20km race, where thousands of runners filled the city’s streets. After crossing the finish line, participants were invited to celebrate and recover in the Samsung Health Victory Selfie Zone.

Culture Meets Technology at Street League Skateboarding Competition

At the Samsung booth during the SLS competition, fans engaged with immersive audio and visual elements that highlighted how technology connects with youth culture. They captured selfies using Galaxy Z Flip7’s FlexCam, embodying the dynamic spirit of skateboarding.

During the competition, athletes performed advanced tricks with Galaxy Buds3 Pro — blending motion and sound in an exciting demonstration. Afterward, they captured victory selfies with FlexCam to celebrate their wins.

To hear the story of how One UI 8 came together, Samsung Newsroom sat down with three of the leading minds behind the new user interface: Mihyun Jeong and Joonhwan Kim, who were in charge of development, and Nawoong Han who coordinated collaboration with Google — all from Samsung Electronics’ Mobile eXperience (MX) Business.

A Personalized Daily Experience, Powered by AI and Foldables

One UI 8 takes Galaxy’s distinctive foldable form factor to the next level, delivering an even more powerful AI experience. Jeong, who was in charge of One UI planning, noted that as AI technology rapidly advances, user expectations are also rising — making One UI both more complex and more important. “To address this, Samsung’s customer experience (CX), user experience (UX) and development teams formed a task force that focused on defining the core concepts and enhancing the overall quality of One UI 8,” she said. “As a result, these core concepts were summed up as ‘multimodal AI, a form factor–optimized UX and a proactive personalized experience.”

Kim, who was in charge of One UI design for foldables, highlighted the design concept for One UI 8 — “When Foldables Meet AI” — as the convergence of form factors and AI innovation. “From the FlexWindow of Galaxy Z Flip7 to the expansive main display of Galaxy Z Fold7, users can now experience Galaxy’s evolution into AI phones across multiple form factors,” he explained.

AI Innovation on the FlexWindow

With One UI 8, Galaxy Z Flip7 lets users access AI features quickly and effortlessly, even without unfolding the device. A simple press of the side key launches Gemini Live, and its FlexWindow-optimized UX enables natural, conversational interactions with AI, as if chatting with a friend.

“You can, for example, view what’s shown on the camera and speak with AI in real time, or add events directly to your calendar. Everyday tasks become quick and effortless,” Jeong added.

The expanded FlexWindow on Galaxy Z Flip7 also makes it easy to check real-time sports scores, news, app updates and more through Now Bar. Plus, Now Brief delivers richer, more personalized information and insights, all available at a glance from the Flex Window.

Innovating Multitasking on a Large Screen

Galaxy Z Fold7’s large main display brings out the full potential of One UI 8. “On the big screen, you can display Galaxy AI-generated results in Split view or in Floating view, and freely resize or move them for highly efficient multitasking,” explained Kim.

Powered by multimodal AI that understands complex contexts, Screen sharing on Gemini Live enables users to share their current screen with AI in real time, even while running multiple apps, and instantly ask questions.

Galaxy AI’s Photo Assist also takes full advantage of the expansive screen. By placing the original and edited versions of an image side by side, users can compare every detail with precision for more refined image editing.

Perfected Through Close Collaboration With Google

At the foundation of One UI 8’s refined AI experience is a special partnership with Google. “Both companies worked together from the very beginning, defining concepts during the early planning stage and collaborating throughout the process to bring the latest features to One UI 8,” explained Han, who managed joint efforts with the Android team at Google.

The way the two teams worked together was also unprecedented. “We collaborated with Google in real time, using a shared development branch that allowed us to exchange code around the clock and fix bugs on the fly,” said Han. Thanks to this close collaboration at the engineering level, Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 became the first devices to feature Android 16 out of the box.

The multimodal Gemini Live experience on Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 —  capable of recognizing on-screen content, enabling natural interactions in the moment, and connecting to Samsung apps to get things done — is also a product of Samsung and Google’s cohesive teamwork.

The development of Samsung DeX for One UI 8 is another prime example of this deep partnership. Developed by Samsung through close collaboration with Google, DeX has evolved and expanded to address key user needs by introducing desktop windowing to the core Android platform. From the underlying structure to detailed user scenarios, Samsung contributed its expertise built over years of operating DeX to the joint expansion effort. This new desktop windowing experience offers app developers a consistent user environment and helps boost productivity on Android devices.

“I traveled between Korea and the UK several times for workshops with Google. We’d gather in front of a whiteboard, sketching out screen transition flows and discussing even the smallest details,” recalled Han.

“We spent so much time together that our teamwork became rock solid. We made matching team hoodies and later grew close enough to even ask about each other’s pets,” he added with a smile. For users, the result of this tight bond was a more powerful and productive Samsung DeX.

Emotion-Embracing Design, Backed by Strong Security

One UI 8 places as much emphasis on thoughtful design as it does on powerful AI features. “In addition to the weather app, which received particularly positive feedback during beta testing, we enhanced animations and visual effects across other everyday apps to create a more immersive experience,” said Kim.

“In One UI 8, the clock can recognize the subject in a chosen wallpaper and organically align itself with its outline. This feature is not only available on the main display but also on Galaxy Z Flip7’s FlexWindow,” he added, introducing it as an element that brings a sense of liveliness to One UI 8’s design.

Jeong added that beyond AI, One UI 8 also brings a host of enhancements designed to maximize everyday convenience. She highlighted features such as a more streamlined Quick Share for easier content sharing; Audio Eraser, which reduces unwanted background noise in videos and audio recordings at the touch of a button; and four new pet profiles added to the Portrait Studio in Photo Assist.

Security, now more critical than ever in the AI era, has also been reinforced. One UI 8 utilizes a new security solution, Knox Enhanced Encrypted Protection (KEEP), and Knox Vault to protect personalized AI features and further safeguard user data by blocking unauthorized access.

“We fully understand the security concerns users may have in the AI era,” said Jeong. “That’s why we’ve built powerful threat-blocking mechanisms into the device, while also providing and continuously upgrading a range of security tools that users can easily use and manage by themselves.”

New Everyday Life With One UI 8

One UI 8 marks the beginning of a new user experience born from the fusion of foldables and AI.

“These are completely new foldable experiences — unlike anything before. Through One UI, we will naturally connect users with AI to deliver even more effective automation and personalization,” said Jeong, expressing confidence in the advancements One UI 8 brings.

“From bar-type phones to foldables and tablets, we hope our form factor–optimized AI experiences will bring even greater value and enjoyment to users’ daily lives,” Kim added.

Looking ahead, Samsung’s collaboration with Google is set to deepen further. “The more advanced the technology becomes, the more important collaboration will be,” noted Han. “We aim to broaden our partnership with Google across all areas of Galaxy, especially in AI — so stay tuned.”

One UI 8 will begin rolling out to other devices in September, starting with the Galaxy S25 series. By taking the synergy between AI and Samsung’s foldable form factors to new heights, the new user interface promises to open up new possibilities for everyday life.

Building on the “Inspired by Nature” concept introduced with One UI 7, the latest ringtone draws from Antonio Vivaldi’s iconic “The Four Seasons” and aims to enrich the everyday sound experience for Galaxy users.

Sound Design Inspired by Nature

Samsung has embraced “Inspired by Nature” as a core theme in its sound design philosophy, applying the concept to not only ringtones but also a full range of interaction sounds. To deepen users’ emotional connection to the natural world, new ringtones are based on classical works inspired by nature while touch interaction audio incorporates actual recordings of natural elements — such as the sound of stones dropping onto the ground.

This design approach continues in One UI 8. The newly added ringtone is based on Vivaldi’s well-known masterpiece, evoking the passage of time and offering the warmth and resonance unique to classical music. The release also marks the second installment in Samsung’s classical ringtone series, following the 2024 ringtone based on “The Carnival of the Animals” by Camille Saint-Saëns.

Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” Reimagined by Top Artists

A lineup of world-class artists came together to create the new signature ringtone — including Grammy Award-winning sound director Byeong Joon Hwang, Seoul National University professor and violinist Dami Kim and the classical ensemble Collegium Musicum Seoul.

To evoke the distinct texture of Baroque music, the team layered in a harpsichord and carefully balanced it with string instruments. Recording took place in a live concert hall, with microphone placement tailored to each musician’s position to preserve nuanced acoustics. The piece was produced in Dolby Atmos, delivering an immersive, spatial sound experience.

To faithfully express the emotions of each season in Vivaldi’s composition, the artists meticulously aligned their interpretation and style through multiple recording sessions. The result is a collaborative work that captures the spirit of all four seasons and brings a rich, uplifting sound to everyday life.

Experiencing Innovation at Galaxy Unpacked 2025

The excitement kicked off in Brooklyn at Galaxy Unpacked 2025. As the new foldables and wearables were unveiled, #TeamGalaxy influencers captured the energy of the launch and shared first impressions in real time on YouTube, Instagram and other platforms — drawing the attention of Galaxy fans around the world.

Inspiring Creativity Through Collaboration

Following the event, participants visited Meta’s New York office for the official program launch. In collaboration with Meta, the #TeamGalaxy Connect 2025 briefing featured sessions including Meta: IG Unfiltered, led by Meta; a Galaxy Watch8 spotlight, led by Sung Chang, Executive Vice President of Brand Marketing, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics; and a Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 spotlight, led by Matthew Leem, Vice President of Brand Marketing, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics. These sessions provided deeper insight into Galaxy’s brand philosophy and technology, along with creative tips to elevate influencer content.

The #TeamGalaxy influencers then split into three themed groups — health, camera and gaming — to reinterpret the new devices’ advanced hardware and Galaxy AI features in their own unique ways.

Running With Galaxy RunnerzZz

On July 10, the “Galaxy RunnerzZz in NYC” event started as part of a global challenge promoting the values of rest, rise and run — all tracked through the Galaxy Watch. More than 70 #TeamGalaxy influencers ran alongside local runners, half-marathon world record holder Jacob Kiplimo and freestyle skier Alex Hall.

Participants tracked their Energy Score with the Galaxy Watch8 and captured the experience using the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 before completing a 3.5- or 7.09-kilometer course.

“Running as a team with people from all over the world was incredible,” said one influencer. “Thanks to the Galaxy Watch8’s pace guidance feature, I was able to finish without overexerting myself.”

Meanwhile, #TeamGalaxy camera influencers teamed up with rising directors from a local film school for “The Ultra City Tales, Unfolds” project. The short film, shot entirely on the Galaxy Z Fold7, highlighted the device’s ultra-level camera capabilities and its suitability for high-quality filmmaking.

At the same time, #TeamGalaxy gaming influencers visited a New York gaming café to challenge local gamers — showcasing the Galaxy Z Fold7’s immersive large-screen experience and powerful performance, even while folded.

The most noticeable change in the Galaxy Z Flip7 is its FlexWindow. The bezel surrounding the dual cameras measures just 1.25mm thick, making the 4.1-inch FlexWindow — which spans the entire surface — the largest ever featured in the Galaxy Z Flip series.

Even when it’s folded, users can easily handle essential daily tasks directly from the FlexWindow, taking the out-of-your-pocket, ready-to-use foldable experience to the next level.

When the screen is turned on, its bright and vivid display provides a clear, expansive view. Compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Flip7 delivers a peak brightness of up to 2,600 nits and a 120Hz refresh rate, allowing users to enjoy a variety of content with stunning clarity.

Dragging the camera icon to launch FlexCam opens a wide camera preview on the FlexWindow. When users turn on the Cover camera effects feature, first introduced on the Galaxy Z Flip7, the ring that surrounds the dual camera hole will change color depending on the shooting mode, immediately capturing the users’ attention: white for standard, yellow for photo and red for video. This allows the users to see the current mode at a glance.

The Zoom Slider on the FlexWindow allows for intuitive zooming in or out with a simple swipe, making it easier to adjust the camera angle for selfies. When taking full-body shots or group photos with friends, the Auto Zoom feature automatically adjusts the framing based on the subject’s position, ensuring a well-balanced composition.

A New FlexWindow Optimized for AI

The FlexWindow becomes even more powerful when combined with intelligent AI features. With the latest Android 16-based One UI 8, the Galaxy Z Flip7 offers a UX optimized for the form factor, enabling a more intuitive and seamless AI experience right from the FlexWindow.

Long pressing the power button launches the AI agent to activate Google Gemini. After initiating the camera view and asking a question like “Can you recommend an outfit color that matches today’s makeup?”, a natural conversation follows, with real-time styling tips provided to complement the user’s makeup.

Over four inspiring days, Samsung Members Connect 2025 gave Members a unique opportunity to dive deep into the Galaxy Z Fold7, Galaxy Z Flip7 and the next chapter of Galaxy AI. The Galaxy Z series has set the standard for foldable phones from its very first launch, with a new release every year. Now in its seventh chapter, the latest design revisits where it all started. The Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 are the result of refinements made over each year of innovation. Samsung Newsroom spoke with Hubert Lee, Head of the Design Team and Huichul Yang, Head of the UX (User eXperience) Team, both part of the Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, to discover the story behind the products and the designers’ persistent pursuit of incredible design.

Since joining as Head of the MX Design Team in late 2022, Lee has overseen the design direction for all MX product launches. With the launch of the new Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7, Lee showcases Galaxy’s ultimate pursuit of ultra-sleek and modern design.

Since joining Samsung in 2005, Yang has played a pivotal role in advancing mobile UX innovation as an HCI (Human Computer Interaction) expert. Since late 2023, Yang has led the UX Team in the MX Business, crafting the mobile experiences powered by Galaxy AI.

The Essence of Foldable Design

Q. The Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 have finally been unveiled. As the heads of the Design and UX teams, it must mean a lot to both of you.

Lee: Among the products I’ve designed at Samsung, the Galaxy Z Fold7 stands out as the one I am most proud of. Most people said, “Wow!” as soon as they saw it. It’s the thinnest, lightest Galaxy Z Fold series model yet. I believe it captures the essence of what a foldable phone can be. It’s only just been unveiled at Galaxy Unpacked 2025 in New York, but I’m confident that customers will understand its true value as they see it up close and get a feel for it in their hands.

Yang: Alongside the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7, we also introduced One UI 8, an interface optimized for the AI experience. I believe that a sleek, modern design — paired with an intuitive interface — can really resonate with users seeking a more elevated mobile experience in this age of AI.

Q. It’s clear you’re both really proud of the products. It must have taken a lot of work to get it out into the world.

Lee: The Galaxy Z series marked the very beginning of foldable phones. To solidify that symbolism, we knew we had to create a product that felt truly impressive to anyone who saw it. There was a shared understanding within the team that simply repeating what we had done in the past wouldn’t be enough to meet customer expectations. Change wasn’t a choice; it was a must. That’s why with the seventh models of the Galaxy Z series, we didn’t approach it as a refinement — we approached it as a redesign from the ground up. We approached it as if we were starting completely from scratch.

We design lifestyle products. To be part of people’s daily lives, portability is essential and reducing weight was key to achieving that. Our mobile R&D office put in a huge amount of effort in that respect. The nature of the hardware meant there was a certain weight we had to carry, but we kept wondering if we could make it just a little bit lighter. That led to a lot of research and testing. As it became lighter, it became thinner and the display larger, until we arrived at the sleek, modern form we had envisioned. The product you see is the result of countless hours of deliberation, passion and engineering.

Q. How did changes to the design of products affect the user interface?

Yang: Since One UI 6, we’ve been introducing a range of AI features as an AI companion. With One UI 8, we focused on meaningful productivity. We took advantage of the Galaxy Z Fold7’s large-screen form factor to enable users to easily compare original and AI-generated content side by side and move it seamlessly between apps.

Q. What are the changes to the Galaxy Z Flip7 UX?

Yang: One of the standout features of the Z Flip7 is its full-front FlexWindow. Gemini is now optimized for the FlexWindow, enabling quick and seamless interaction with AI — anytime you need it. It’s our new take on an AI companion — one that unfolds right in the palm of your hand. Notably, the form factor is such that the main camera faces you when folded, so now you can launch Gemini Live from the FlexWindow and ask about everyday things, like if your outfit is appropriate for the weather or your schedule for the day.

Q. The products come in a range of colors. Which one is your favorite?

Lee: I love them all but if I had to choose one, it would have to be Silver Shadow. It’s the most straightforward and simple one, but I think it represents Galaxy’s “Ultra Sleek, Ultra Modern” concept really well.

When customers buy premium products like the Galaxy Z Fold7, they tend to prefer values that feel timeless, so we really took that into consideration when choosing the colors for this series. We leveraged the metallic material to bring the colors to life in a way that expresses our design intent and complements the foldable form factor. One of the standout colors of this series is Blue Shadow. As you move the product around, the shine and sophistication are noticeable from all angles.

Let’s Design Together!

Q. Even though you’re on different teams, you’ve been working on the same product. How did the Design and UX teams get connected?

Yang: Wallpaper design is where we really tend to collaborate closely. We work together to make sure the message the Design team wants to convey is properly communicated through the wallpaper, the face of the product. For One UI 7, we aligned the product’s corner radius with the One UI icon geometry. We’ll continue to align the GUI (Graphic user interface) with the underlying style of the product for future releases, too.

Q. How do the team members collaborate?

Lee: The Design team holds a session called Design Clinic. Group leaders and managers come together to share ongoing projects and insights. It’s not a formal meeting, but rather a relaxed gathering to share ideas over coffee and dessert. It’s an open discussion where even criticism is seen as a way to make our products better and support each other. In the MX Business’s Design team, we cover everything from smartphones and wearables to PCs, tablets, CMF (Color, material and finish) and packaging, each item with its own functions. The Design Clinic helps us gain insights from other fields or discover early-stage ideas.

Q. How do you encourage synergy between designers on the team?

Lee: I often emphasize the phrase, “Let’s Design Together.” Rather than just holding onto what they’ve been assigned, I encourage the team to think collectively about what we’re making and how we can improve it. If feedback or advice isn’t sincere, it just leads to silos between teams. Designing together as one team with an authentic, shared mindset is what I emphasize most within the organization.

Reframing the Future

Q. Aside from designers’ intuition, sensibilities and qualitative insights, do you also incorporate user testing or quantitative validation during the design planning phase?

Lee: The Design team has established a Galaxy Design principle called “Essential Design,” aimed at focusing on core value and removing unnecessary elements. It’s based on three key elements: Simple, Impactful and Emotive. We believe that when these three elements come together in harmony, they create a truly aspirational product. We use the principle and its key elements as evaluation tools during the design planning stage; through a process we call Design Analytics. We conduct evaluations with internal employees to make sure our design intent is being communicated to users effectively. We use the data and insights from this to refine current designs and even identify future products. It’s how we strengthen our design identity, and it’s an integral part of the Galaxy design process.

Q. Do you use AI in your work?

Yang: We refer to AI tools during the testing process. We’ve observed that results from AI-based virtual user testing are fairly close to tests done by recruiting actual users. This leads us to expect that AI can play a significant role in UX evaluation going forward. We’re also experimenting with AI in other ways, like testing multiple versions of motion or animation effects, or turning 2D assets into 3D or animated formats. In this way, we’re continuously learning more about how to enhance our designs with AI.

Q. The age we live in is constantly changing. What kind of mindset and vision should guide designers today?

Yang: AI is a new momentum for designers. There are more and more of us thinking about how to use AI to make our work more meaningful. I believe those who show interest in how the world is changing and make new tools their own will be the ones leading in the age of AI. Some say designers will fade away as AI advances, but I see it differently. Design direction, the ability to guide AI creations and enrich them, is bound to become even more essential.

Lee: When it comes to new devices like foldable products, we’re not designing features. We’re designing the entire experience. I believe it’s our role as designers to deeply consider why a device folds, why it unfolds and what kind of value and convenience those actions should provide. That’s because we’re not just product designers, we’re lifestyle designers, and in the end, the user is the most important part of all. We have to read the trends constantly and keep asking ourselves what users truly need. To me, design that makes their lives better is design that’s truly meaningful.
