Samsung Electronics today announced the availability of Galaxy AI¹ features on more Galaxy devices through a new One UI 6.1 update engineered to further the democratization of mobile AI. The update will be available across the Galaxy S23 series, S23 FE, Z Fold5, Z Flip5 and Tab S9 series, starting to roll out from the end of March. Aligning with the recently launched Galaxy S24 series,² this update elevates the standard of users’ mobile AI experience through a hybrid approach that combines on-device and cloud-based AI.

“Our goal with Galaxy AI is not only to pioneer a new era of mobile AI but also to empower users by making AI more accessible,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics. “This is only the beginning of Galaxy AI, as we plan to bring the experience to over 100 million Galaxy users within 2024 and continue to innovate ways to harness the unlimited possibilities of mobile AI.”

Communication That Transcends Barriers

Even more Galaxy users will now be able to take advantage of the communication-enhancing Galaxy AI features available on AI-supported models. The features include the ability to adjust message tone and translate messages in 13 different languages using Chat Assist.³ Galaxy users can experience the power of real-time interactions through Live Translate,⁴ which provides voice and text translations for phone calls. With Interpreter, users can also engage in spontaneous conversations with locals while traveling as the split-screen feature generates text translations for live conversations.

Productivity Unparalleled

The broader integration of Galaxy AI across the Galaxy ecosystem also enables a seamless user experience in day-to-day tasks on AI-supported models, driving new levels of efficiency. Search functions are improved through Circle to Search with Google,⁵ which generates intuitive search results with a swift circle-motioned gesture. Life-enhancing organization features such as Note Assist⁶ allow users to create formats, generate summaries and translate notes, while Browsing Assist⁷ enables individuals to stay up to speed faster by generating comprehensive summaries of news articles. Transcript Assist can also easily transcribe meeting recordings and generate summaries and translations.

Unstoppable Creativity for Your Inner Artist

With Galaxy AI, Samsung is doubling down on its role in unlocking individuals’ creative potential. Galaxy’s latest update delivers a suite of Galaxy AI tools that encourages creative freedom even after a photo is taken. Through Generative Edit,⁸ AI-supported devices can easily resize, reposition or realign objects in photos to perfect a great shot. Users can also polish any photo faster and easier than ever with Edit Suggestion.⁹ No need for multiple re-shots as Instant Slow-mo¹⁰ can generate additional frames for slow-motion videos to capture action-packed moments.

Creativity and personalization do not stop there. Customizing Galaxy devices is even easier than before through AI-generated wallpapers, enabling AI-supported devices to bring users’ creativity to life.

Dynamic AMOLED 2X

Dynamic AMOLED 2X is Samsung’s latest and most advanced mobile display, building upon the original Dynamic AMOLED introduced in 2019. This enhanced version is tailored for high-speed gaming and multitasking, boasting a 100% accurate DCI-P3 color gamut for optimized colors and contrast. The display delivers a seamless user experience with smoother scrolling, excellent response times and HDR10+ certification. Notably, the adaptive refresh rate has been upgraded from 60Hz to 120Hz, further enhancing display performance.

Adaptive Refresh Rate

This technology is designed to offer a smooth and seamless scrolling and viewing experience by automatically adjusting the screen’s refresh rate based on the content being displayed. This feature not only ensures a smoother user experience but also optimizes battery life.

Auto Framing

Auto Framing is a feature that automatically adjusts the Galaxy device’s camera angle based on the number of people in the picture. The view narrows when there is one person and widens when the camera detects at least two people in the frame. Moreover, the screen follows the movement of the detected photographer, allowing for a trackable distance of approximately two-and-a-half to three meters and a trackable speed matching a normal walking pace. With this feature, capturing dynamic scenes like people dancing or children playing is a breeze. Users can ensure everyone in a large group fits within the frame using the Auto Framing feature and Flex Mode.

Nightography

Nightography is a powerful camera capability introduced for the first time with the Galaxy S22 that enhances color vibrancy and picture quality even in low-light environments. This feature captures a series of images and employs multi-frame processing (MFP) technology to analyze and eliminate noise and blurry shots. Nightography applies an HDR effect to the refined images, combining them into a single clear photo. Colors and details are enhanced using an AI image signal processing (ISP) algorithm. Using the Super Night Solution, users can take bright and crips videos without any visual noise.

Nit

Derived from the Greek word “nitere” meaning “to shine,” nit is a unit of luminance used to measure the light emitted from a smartphone or computer display. More specifically, one nit is the brightness of one candle in an area of one square meter, while 1,000 nits equals the brightness of light emitted by 1,000 candles in an area of one square meter. Since smartphones are often used outdoors, luminance is important to ensure the displays remain clearly visible in varying lighting conditions.

Fast Wireless Charging 2.0

Fast Wireless Charging 2.0 is Samsung’s wireless charging technology standard that operates on a magnetic field-induced fast-charging mechanism.

Initially showcased at Galaxy Unpacked 2015 when the Galaxy Note5 was introduced, the earlier Fast Wireless Charging could support wireless charging of up to 9W. Now, Fast Wireless Charging 2.0 enables faster wireless charging options of 10W, 12W and 15W.

IP Rating

IP, or ingress protection, is a standard that measures a device’s ability to resist the elements. The first digit in an IP rating denotes the level of defense against dust and foreign particles, while the second digit represents the level of safeguard against liquids — the higher the digit, the better the protection. The Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 were the first foldable products to achieve the IPX8 rating, followed by Z Fold4, Z Flip4, Z Fold5 and Z Flip5.

Flex Window

Flex Window, the Cover Screen of a Galaxy Z Flip device, was first included in the Galaxy Z Flip5. The display allows users to take photos, reply to messages or play content without opening the phone.

Flipsuit Case

This is an accessory for the Galaxy Z Flip5 that uses near-field communication (NFC) technology. When a Flipsuit card is inserted into the case, the Flex Window plays content linked to the card.

FlexCam

FlexCam is a camera feature using Galaxy Z 5’s Flex Window and the high-quality rear camera, allowing users to take pictures from various angles without opening the phone. Plus, convenient hands-free shooting is possible when Flex Mode and the Cover Screen camera are activated.

Multi Window

This feature enables users to open multiple windows on the Galaxy Z Fold display, supporting up to three at once. Multi Window offers a multitasking experience to simultaneously perform various tasks such as streaming, shopping, browsing the web and playing games.

Swipe Gesture

Swipe Gesture is a handy feature that lets a user control the Galaxy foldable screen through finger gestures. For example, split the screen horizontally and open a new app by swiping up with two fingers from the bottom to the top. These intuitive gestures enhance multitasking efficiency, providing an optimal way to operate the device.

Ultra Thin Glass

Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) is a crucial component of Galaxy foldable displays. The material’s exceptional thinness allows for flexible bending — at the same time, it possesses scratch-resistant properties, characteristic of traditional glass.

Flex Hinge

The Flex Hinge is the component that allows a Galaxy foldable to be folded and unfolded, enhancing the phone’s durability and enabling the functionality of Flex Mode.

Flex Mode¹

When partially folded, the Galaxy device will go into Flex Mode. Users can set their foldables on a flat surface without needing a separate phone stand to conveniently watch a movie, write an email or video call a friend.

Flex Mode Panel

Flex Mode Panel allows for seamless use of the control panel while enjoying videos, music or other content when the Galaxy foldable is set in Flex Mode. This feature can be activated in Labs.

Taskbar

The Taskbar conveniently presents Favorites and shortcuts to recently used apps at the bottom of an unfolded Galaxy display — allowing users to easily switch between apps and enjoy a seamless multitasking experience, much like they would on a PC.

Under Display Camera

The Under Display Camera (UDC) achieves a truly full-screen display by concealing the Galaxy Z Fold’s camera beneath the screen. With UDC, the front camera is seamlessly integrated to eliminate the need for notches or holes in the display. Samsung initially introduced the cutting-edge UDC technology in the Galaxy Z Fold3 and has continued to implement it in the Z Fold4 and the latest Galaxy Z Fold5.

But how did Samsung pull off this feat of engineering?

The giant next-gen Galaxy devices were brought to life in these global locales thanks to a combination of real-world images and CGI mastery. Beginning in Istanbul in collaboration with Turkish influencer Bulutsahin, they soon started appearing in key markets all around the world. Using advanced video editing techniques, moving cameras and rotoscope technology, these huge, photorealistic foldables were superimposed onto footage of actual billboards and buildings. Rendered at a large scale but in meticulously realistic detail, the digital models capture viewers’ imaginations by showing the new foldables’ distinctive form factors inserted into familiar settings.

Gamers Go Head-to-head in Heated Galaxy Z Fold5 League of Legends: Wild Rift Tournament

On August 27, the 2023 Galaxy Fold Cup gaming tournament reached an epic conclusion. The tournament saw talented teams of esports gamers use Galaxy Z Fold5’s next-level gaming capabilities to test each other’s skills on Riot Game’s League of Legends: Wild Rift MOBA mobile game. Following applications from teams representing over 2000 people in July, winning team “OZG” took home the title at the Jamsil eSports Arena in Seoul in front of an enthusiastic, in-person audience. 

With world-class League of Legends champion Sang-hyeok “Faker” Lee in attendance and over 210,000 additional viewers tuning in on the internet live broadcast, the tournament demonstrated Galaxy Z Fold5’s spacious display, lightweight handling and immersive responsiveness. Competitors and audience members alike were impressed with the quality of the Galaxy Z Fold5’s gaming experience, Faker remarking that he was amazed that gaming could feel so fluid and precise on a mobile device.

With a thematic design and customized icons, the Galaxy Z Fold2 Thom Browne Edition enabled users to curate a style that was all their own through various lock screen backgrounds featuring Thom Browne art sketches that could be changed each day of the week. From the inside out, the Thom Browne experience on the Galaxy Z Fold2 was both chic and consistent.

Because servers crashed during the initial launch of the Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition, Samsung restructured its sales strategy for the Galaxy Z Fold2 Thom Browne Edition to meet overwhelming demand. While previous Thom Browne collections were available on a first come, first serve basis, interested individuals were now required to apply to participate in a raffle. The drawing for the Galaxy Z Fold2 Thom Browne Edition attracted more than 230,000 participants, and 5,000 winners were selected. Notably, fans who missed out on the exclusive edition took matters into their own hands by creating their own DIY interpretations of the limited-edition device, sparking a new phone decoration trend.

In its second evolution, the Galaxy Z Fold3 Thom Browne Edition made a striking return with a modern design reminiscent of a classic white suit. Thom Browne’s signature colors bordered the new matte white finish, pairing perfectly with the streamlined glass body — and the shiny silver hinge added to the design, enhancing reflections from light. Thanks to its impeccable colors and finish, the device exuded elegance and effortlessly transformed into an everyday luxury style statement.

When users of the Galaxy Z Fold3 Thom Browne Edition turned on their phones, they encountered a user experience (UX) that brought the brand’s unique identity to life. Unfolding the device revealed a theme with Thom Browne’s signature stripe, while the home and lock screens were decorated with the designer’s handwriting and original sketches. As the first foldable with support for the S Pen, the Galaxy Z Fold3 included an S Pen Pro in the same iconic Thom Browne style.

Approximately 460,000 participants swarmed the website in the span of nine hours, showcasing the remarkable popularity of the series. The combination of the refined design and exclusivity of a limited edition contributed to the device’s mainstream appeal and prompted numerous users to add the Galaxy Z Fold3 Thom Browne Edition to their coveted wish list.

The Galaxy Z Fold5 Thom Browne Edition is stepping onto the runway in 2023 with a sleek, commanding design reminiscent of a black suit. The refined back glass stands out with Thom Browne’s signature colors — red, white and blue — and the hinge and camera ring sport a gold hue. Using black frames to bring everything together, this iteration blends different materials and colors for a touch of whimsy.

Q. Please introduce the Galaxy Visual Identity System.

The Galaxy Visual Identity System unifies various product designs and form factors into one cohesive identity. We deeply contemplated how to express the message of Galaxy clearly and with emotion. After much thought, our team decided to establish an integrated Galaxy brand image by expressing each model in a simple, symbolic manner.

Q. What’s the message behind the Galaxy Visual Identity System?

The philosophy of Galaxy Design is “Essential Design.” This idea is applied to all areas that require visual communication, not just the design of Galaxy products — such as form factor, color and material.

By establishing the Galaxy Visual Identity System, we intended to showcase the unique, differentiated characteristics of Galaxy through various form factors and express Galaxy’s sincerity and minimal yet impactful design. Through such efforts, we expect to further strengthen the design identity of Galaxy.

Q. What challenges did you encounter while creating the Galaxy Visual Identity System?

Until now, the graphic design for Galaxy packaging was created based on typography that represents each series — whether its Galaxy S, Galaxy Z, etc. For the latest devices, we challenged ourselves to visually communicate Galaxy’s competitive edge.

To create the most comprehensive visual identity, we studied each product from different angles to explore what design best represents each form factor.

Q. How was the Galaxy Visual Identity System incorporated into the new Galaxy product designs?

We incorporated the Galaxy Visual Identity System for the first time in the Galaxy S23 package design. Following that, the system was applied to the packaging for the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5, allowing us to introduce the completed visual design to consumers.

The Galaxy Visual Identity System signifies symbolism, scalability and dynamism. Each product is designed to connect its representative characteristics together while considering scalability to include different colors and experiences. These factors offer a dynamic quality adaptable to any situation within the unified system. We aimed to enhance Galaxy’s image by demonstrating the innovation of upcoming Galaxy products in a playful and enjoyable way using this brand identity.

Q. What message is the video trying to convey?

Design communication is one of the key roles of the Design Strategy Group. Through dynamic motion graphics, we made sure to include every aspect of the Galaxy Visual Identity in this film — from the design process to symbolism based on each form factor and versatile scalability.

For instance, the line illustration at the beginning of the video shows how our products take shape. Then, we use a three-dimensional embossing effect to illustrate the texture of craft paper and communicate the significance of Galaxy’s recyclable package design and our consideration for the environment. Using various materials, such as glass and metal, we tried to represent the CMF (Color, Material, Finish) of each product line.

In addition, the video goes beyond the technical aspects of the form factors and portrays values based on the customer experience (CX). The scene where the devices transform into windows represents openness, the philosophy of the Galaxy ecosystem, while the Braille graphic symbolizes accessibility and inclusion. The outer space visual further expresses Galaxy’s brand identity. What’s more, elements from smartphones that consumers are familiar with are illustrated — such as sticky notes, digital watch faces, musical instruments and games.

Q. What details would you like consumers to notice in this film?

Ideas and symbols are cleverly included in every scene, similar to hidden Easter eggs. Viewers can search for these details and enjoy the meanings they bring.

For instance, the silhouette of the Galaxy Ultra’s S Pen is tucked away in the window scene. In the following digital watch face shot, the initials for Galaxy S, Flip, Ultra and Fold are placed on top of the numbers, disguised as each respective device. There’s also a detail that symbolizes the S Pen, adding another layer of fun. Then, the score is 2023 on level 23 in the following graphic depicting a popular game. All the blocks on the board represent the four Galaxy models. By making the completed blocks disappear, we wanted to build anticipation among viewers for the new products slated to launch next year.

“Design is thinking made visual.” In this process, it’s important to strip away any unnecessary elements and communicate the main idea concisely. This is what makes Essential Design truly effective. Our goal is to create simple yet purposeful and meaningful designs for the future.

Introducing the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5

After downloading the “Try Galaxy” app, users can learn from helpful tutorials and explore the apps and widgets as if experienced on a Galaxy phone’s home screen. They can also sample other innovative and unique functions available through Samsung Galaxy. In particular, the newly enhanced app highlights key features of the Galaxy Z Flip5, Z Fold5 and One UI 5.1.1:

• FlexCam Experience: Users can explore the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5’s FlexCam mode. Through the app, users can experience how these foldable devices unlock new capabilities by capturing memorable moments in a variety of creative angles. With the biggest cover screen in the Galaxy Z Flip series, Galaxy Z Flip5 also enables quick and easy-to-check selfie experiences.
• Immersive Screen and Seamless Multitasking: Users can connect two devices to create one connected screen, which simulates Galaxy Z Fold5’s robust, big-screen experience. Through video demonstrations, users can view video content on an immersive full screen. They can also experience powerful productivity through enhanced drag and drop features, enabling seamless multitasking when moving content between screens.
  
• Connected Ecosystem: Users can learn what the Galaxy ecosystem has to offer, including Quick Share between near and far away devices, Samsung Health’s body composition data when paired with a Galaxy Watch and the many other exciting possibilities on offer with Galaxy devices. All of this is showcased through the seamless One UI 5.1.1.

Artists Bring Special Customer Experiences to Samsung.com

Haydonna, an artist well known for her dynamic graphics and cheerful style, participated in the design of the Galaxy Z Fold5 case, incorporating her signature “Fluffy Friends” characters. Yeseul O, who creates original art using 3D, augmented reality (AR) and metaverse elements, and Lee Eun, known for her delightful paintings using vibrant colors, each collaborated with Samsung on a Galaxy Z Flip5 case. Yeseul O expresses the value of life’s small pleasures through her distinctive character called “Metabun_ny,” while artist Lee Eun incorporates messages of encouragement for people into her designs.

As for the Galaxy Z Flip5, Yeseul O and Lee Eun’s artworks are recreated as animated designs using near-field communication (NFC) technology, providing customers with a new and immersive experience. Once users insert the “Flipsuit card” with NFC technology into the case, the image of the card is displayed as an animation on the Flex Window of the Galaxy Z Flip5’s external screen.

Samsung’s collaboration with these three artists in the design of the Galaxy Z series accessories aligns with the emerging concept of “Wholesomeness.” Wholesomeness aims to spread positive influence through messages of positivity, kindness, empathy and inclusiveness — in contrast to negativity, criticism and confrontation.

For the next month, this space will be packed with exciting events — from live performances and meet-and-greets with top South Korean idols to community-building events, such as mixers, yoga and networking sessions. The Galaxy Experience Space in New York City, one of the city’s hottest destinations, will be open to the public from July 26 to August 20.

“I’ve visited many experience spaces around the world, and I’ve never seen such a new and fun space,” said Dang Huy Duc Bui, a reporter for Vietnamese online publication VnExpress. “I hope Samsung Electronics opens many Galaxy Studios overseas.”

Celebrating With Galaxy: From Busking to a Drone Show

Alongside the grand opening of Flip Side Market Busan, the festive spirit came alive at Gwangalli Beach. Korean singer Mujin Lee’s street performance delighted visitors and set the stage for a memorable celebration.

Mint Beach served as the stage, featuring mint-colored sand reminiscent of the Flip Side Market. Galaxy fans, World EXPO supporters and Busan citizens all gathered on this unique sandy beach, eagerly counting down to the opening of Flip Side Market Busan.

To spark enthusiasm for the newest devices revealed at Galaxy Unpacked, Samsung strategically placed “Join the flip side” signs and Galaxy Z Flip5 digital out-of-home (OOH) advertisements in key locations throughout downtown Busan in the month leading up to the event.

At this year’s Galaxy Unpacked held at COEX in Seoul on July 26, Samsung Electronics unveiled a new product lineup that signaled the next era of innovation — from the upgraded Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 to the Galaxy Watch6 series and Galaxy Tab S9 series.

Encouraging users to join the flip side and explore the possibilities of Galaxy, Samsung opened a Galaxy Studio in the Seongsu neighborhood of Seoul on July 28. Upon entering Flip Side Market The Garden, visitors are greeted by an Innovation Monument at the center of the space, showcasing the evolution of the new foldable phones through a factory line. The Innovation Monument is a tribute to the ingenuity behind the Galaxy Z Flip and Fold lineups — displaying the production process of the devices from applying the new Flex Hinge and testing their durability to the final launch with new colors and eco-conscious, recyclable packaging.

At Flip Side The Garden, there is a selfie zone with a variety of eye-popping backgrounds and themes for visitors to enjoy. Guests can take epic selfies from different angles using the Galaxy Z Flip5’s precise camera and other advanced features, including FlexCam and Quick Shot. The selfie zone, designed to target Gen Z, also showcases t-shirts from Samsung’s collaboration with popular brand “Kim’s Fruits” in Korea.

Across Flip Side Market The Garden is Flip Side Market Seongsu, the highlight of the Galaxy Studio experience where visitors can experience all the features of the new Galaxy products unveiled at Unpacked.

The Unique Side: Simply Tap To Explore Your Personalities

Upon entering the first floor of Flip Side Market Seongsu, visitors are welcomed by a large wall that utilizes the Galaxy Z Flip5. The display showcases the larger 3.4-inch Flex Window on the Galaxy Z Flip5, creating a colorful attraction with each unique screen.

“The wall demonstrates the enhanced usability of Galaxy Z Flip5’s Flex Window,” said a tech influencer from Thailand. “I can use more apps on a larger Cover Screen and customize the screen with more choices.”

On first and second floor of The Unique Side, visitors can decorate their Galaxy Z Flip5 with the all-new NFC-based Flipsuit Card. When guests choose a design and tap the changeable NFC card against the back of the device, the Flex Window automatically changes to match, just like decalcomania. By simply tapping different Flipsuit Cards, guests can find the accessories that match their personalities.

At The Flex Side zone on the second floor, visitors can get a glimpse into the exciting world of Galaxy Watch6 series straps to enrich their fashion styles. Visitors at Galaxy Unpacked 2023 could experience Samsung’s latest products inside a space decorated like a “hanok,” or traditional Korean-style house.

The Experience Zone was masterfully crafted by Kyung-sun Chae, art director of the global hit series “Squid Game.” Samsung Newsroom met with Chae to learn about the creation behind the one-of-a-kind Experience Zone at Galaxy Unpacked 2023.

Q. How do you feel being the director overseeing the Experience Zone at the first Galaxy Unpacked held in Seoul?

I’m proud that I got to showcase various features of the latest Galaxy devices and highlight Seoul’s charm to countless people through Galaxy Unpacked. My favorite part of this experience was developing the initial concepts for the Experience Zone. Through this event, I now have a new desire to introduce Korean culture and spaces to a wider audience using Galaxy technology.

Q. What are some differences between the Experience Zone you created for Galaxy Unpacked and production designs you’ve created in the past?

Production design is about visualizing text in video — it’s all about expressing the textual themes and distinct attributes of the characters in a visually effective manner.

For Galaxy Unpacked, I had to take a different approach from directing a production since actual visitors would be attending and experiencing the space in person. Because it’s the first time that new Galaxy devices are being unveiled in South Korea, I focused on presenting the modern aesthetics of Galaxy and accentuating the true beauty of Seoul, the city where tradition and technology coexist.

Q. What is the concept of the Experience Zone at Galaxy Unpacked 2023?

To me, it was meaningful that the event was hosted in Seoul. I wanted to create a harmonious space that displayed a fresh perspective of the city alongside the new Galaxy devices. This is how I decided on the concept of the Experience Zone — preserving existing perspectives, unfolding folded perspectives and sharing new perspectives.

To convey this, I actively utilized hanok, an architecture unique to Korea. As the traditional structure of hanok shares some similarities with the foldable structure of the Galaxy Z Flip5, I presented the experience of seeing one’s perspective expand or unfold by leaning on the structure of the hanok. I included themes of “openness” and “infinite expansion” from the world of Galaxy to complete the experience.

In addition, I applied Korean traditional landscape architecture, “chagyeong,” which means to lend scenery. In hanok, a window is like a frame that holds nature. Chagyeong allows you to fully appreciate nature and enjoy the expanded space through the frame, even from within the hanok. I implemented this design principle while designing and directing the Experience Zone.

I developed each Galaxy product booth using “changho,” the Korean traditional door of a hanok, and positioned them to form the shape of a lotus flower. Behind the traditional Korean door, the night view and futuristic landscape of Seoul are visible. Visitors can appreciate the new Galaxy products in a different light, as the products merge with the Seoul backdrop.

Lastly, I placed traditional elements throughout the entire Experience Zone. I recreated what Seoul looked like in the past by using the traditional walls and structure of hanok as well as other historical items such as “soban,” a small tray-like table. I designed the wall with glass material to mirror the vision behind Galaxy, which seeks to preserve existing values while continuing to evolve and innovate.

I hope the visitors will enjoy both the Seoul skyline and the new Galaxy products through this unique space.

Q. What inspiration did you get from the new Galaxy products when designing the space?

The Galaxy Z Flip5 has many unique characteristics with its ingenious foldable form factor and sophisticated design. These characteristics resemble Seoul as the city simultaneously embraces both tradition and modernity by combining the familiar with the unfamiliar. In particular, I used the decalcomania method, inspired by the Galaxy Z series, to portray Seoul at both day and night.

I highlighted the contrast between the city’s day and night by using black and white in the background. I also utilized the mint color of the Galaxy devices and Korean traditional patchwork material to create Seoul’s cityscape, which shine brightly at all times of the day. In addition, I expressed shadows by utilizing Galaxy products. The structure that was made with the folding screen as the motif, in which visitors can draw the shadows to express their uniqueness, was inspired by Galaxy foldable.

Q. You have been the art director of various historical TV dramas that capture the different aesthetics of Seoul. Did that influence the design process when creating the Experience Zone for Galaxy Unpacked?

Throughout the ideation and creation process for Galaxy Unpacked, I aspired to create a space that gave visitors a chance to enjoy traditional Korean hanok as well as Galaxy products. I hope that everyone who visits the Experience Zone will have a memorable experience at the very first Galaxy Unpacked event in Seoul.

Today, when you reach into your pocket and pull out your phone, you’re often greeted by a screen nearly the size of a tablet. Foldable smartphones have become an integral part of our daily lives. Behind this seamless integration is the pursuit of innovation by Samsung Electronics and its dedicated employees who have built the foundation for the Galaxy Z Fold to become a mainstay in the mobile market. Samsung Newsroom sat down to detail the journey of the Galaxy Z Fold series, from conception to creation, as it continues to unfold with new features year after year.

In 2019, Samsung’s Galaxy Fold shattered the conventional notion of mobile phones. Featuring a remarkable 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display, this revolutionary device offered users a tablet-like experience right from the palm of their hands. Thanks to its precise hinge technology, the phone could be effortlessly folded like a book, ensuring portability without compromising functionality. This achievement was a result of innovation across all areas, from materials to technology.

The larger screen opened new possibilities for more versatile content viewing. For example, users could split the display into two or three sections based on their preferences. To make multitasking easy, Samsung added the Multi Window feature, allowing users to run multiple apps simultaneously. What’s more, content being viewed on the Cover Screen could continue without interruption when the phone was unfolded. This device brought a whole new level of productivity and engagement that was not possible with other smartphones, inviting users into an entirely new world.

The following year, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold2, an upgraded version of the Galaxy Fold that incorporated valuable user feedback on the foldable experience. The main display was overhauled to maximize user immersion, now boasting a larger 7.6-inch screen with a sleek design that eliminated the notch and left only a camera hole. Additionally, the cover display was expanded to 6.2 inches, significantly enhancing usability on the go.

The Galaxy Z Fold2 also introduced a groundbreaking feature called Flex mode, a unique user experience that divides your screen as you partially fold your phone between 75 and 115 degrees. In addition to this innovation, the camera capabilities were enhanced for even better photos — Auto Framing automatically adjusts the camera’s shooting range by recognizing faces and movements, while Dual Preview allows both the user and the subject of the photo to view the preview on the Main and Cover Screen simultaneously. With the combination of Flex mode and these camera upgrades, anyone could now easily become a content creator.

The Galaxy Z Fold2 not only improved multitasking capabilities but also simplified the way users managed multiple tasks on their smartphones. With the improved Multi Window, users have the flexibility to adjust the screen layout based on their needs. They can also smoothly move texts and images between different running apps. Additionally, the App Pair feature eliminates repetitive and time-consuming setups by allowing users to save combinations of frequently used apps and open them together as a single group. These upgrades streamlined multitasking immensely to create a hassle-free mobile experience.

To ensure that users no longer needed to worry about accidental drops or water damage, Samsung’s third-generation foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G, introduced significant durability improvements. Making history for foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G was the first to offer IPX8 water resistance,¹ allowing consumers to comfortably use their phones with wet hands while cooking or enjoy their beach vacations without concern. The main display became 80% more durable than its predecessor through the application of a protective film made from new materials.² By incorporating Armor Aluminum, the strongest material used in Galaxy devices to date, and Corning^® Gorilla^® Glass Victus^®, users’ smartphones were safeguarded no matter the circumstances. In addition, the phone was verified by Bureau Veritas after undergoing rigorous testing to withstand 200,000 folds.³

The Galaxy Z Fold3 5G boasted a stunning 7.6-inch main display that truly shined. The Under Display Camera (UDC) technology places pixels over the camera hole to enhance light transmittance and adjust pixel spacing, resulting in a seamless widescreen experience. Users could enjoy videos, games and other immersive content with a fully utilized display, free from any visual disruptions caused by a camera hole. Moreover, the new display incorporated Eco² display technology, boosting brightness by approximately 29%, to ensure users could experience a remarkably clear display even in direct sunlight.

For the first time ever in the series, the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G introduced support for the S Pen Fold Edition, a tool that maximizes efficiency when used on a foldable screen. Whether you need to sketch on the screen or quickly jot down notes, the S Pen Fold Edition is readily available. Simply remove it, and you’re ready to go. When you double tap the main display while pressing the side of the S Pen Fold Edition, Samsung Note opens instantly — helping you take notes whether you’re watching an online course or talking on the phone. By offering limitless possibilities for work, study and more, this addition brought a new level of enjoyment and unlocked countless ways to utilize the phone.

The Galaxy Z Fold4 introduced remarkable improvements in both weight and display size. At only 263 grams, the device’s screen featured a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display, while the cover display became wider and shorter to maintain a stable aspect ratio. This design enhancement ensured that users could comfortably type and freely utilize most apps even when the smartphone was folded.

In today’s world, the boundaries between workspaces and non-workspaces have become increasingly blurred, whether you’re at the office, home, coffee shop or park. Recognizing this, the Galaxy Z Fold4 elevated its multitasking capabilities to a whole new level. The Taskbar feature, reminiscent of the familiar taskbar layout on PC screens, allows users to add their favorite apps for easy access. This not only simplifies the transition between different app screens but also allows for the intuitive Drag and Drop feature, enabling users to display multiple apps simultaneously. In addition, the App Pair feature works directly with the Taskbar, so users can save even more time.

The added swipe gestures took the phone’s multitasking capabilities even further. With simple finger gestures, users could split the screen or bring up pop-up windows, making it incredibly convenient to view multiple apps on a single display. By dragging a finger from a corner to the center, the current app transforms into a pop-up window. Swiping two fingers from the right, left or bottom splits the screen, displaying the current app on both halves. Furthermore, Samsung’s strengthened support for productivity apps such as Google Chrome, Gmail, Microsoft Office and Outlook, enabling users to effortlessly manage various tasks no matter where they unfold their smartphones.

This year, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold5, the series’ lightest and most groundbreaking foldable yet. The latest addition combines the power of an immersive, large screen with a sleek and lightweight design, offering unparalleled portability at only 253 grams without compromising performance. The Galaxy Z Fold5’s 7.6-inch Main Screen provides an expansive and uninterrupted viewing experience, regardless of whether users are enjoying their favorite videos in portrait or landscape mode.

Gamers will be thrilled by the addition of Snapdragon^® 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, which enhances graphics and uses AI to deliver a next-level gaming experience on the large smartphone screen ever.

Productivity gets a boost with the improved Taskbar, two-handed Drag and Drop and hidden pop-up feature, allowing users to multitask and transfer content between multiple apps with ease. What’s more, the slimmer and more compact design of the S Pen Fold Edition allows users to unleash their creativity anytime, anywhere.

Finally, in line with Samsung’s vision for sustainability, the Galaxy Z Fold5 incorporates a wider variety of recycled materials⁴ — pre-consumer recycled glass and aluminum as well as post-consumer recycled plastics sourced from discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles. A Wider Variety of Recycled Materials in More Components

Earlier this year, Samsung expanded its innovative use of recycled materials in product design with the Galaxy S23 series, introducing new materials to more components. The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 advance these efforts, featuring a wider variety of recycled materials¹ in more internal and external components than previous Galaxy Z series smartphones. The newest foldable smartphones incorporate pre-consumer recycled aluminum and post-consumer recycled plastic sourced from discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles. They also scale the use of Corning^® Gorilla^® Glass Victus^® 2, which contains an average of 22% pre-consumer recycled glass content.

Not only did Samsung add more types of recycled materials used in each device, but the company also more than doubled the amount of device components that use a minimum of 10% post-consumer recycled plastic or pre-consumer recycled glass, or an average of 22% pre-consumer recycled glass. Both the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5² use recycled materials in 15 device components, an increase from six internal components in the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Z Fold4.

When it comes to packaging, Samsung continue to advance its efforts to reduce the presence of single-use plastic. That’s why the paper for the packaging box³ is made using 100% recycled material.⁴ The company also switched to recycled paper material for the front and back cover protector.

A Device Lifecycle That Lasts Longer

The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 continue Samsung’s work to optimize the longevity and improve the upgradability of its smartphones. Each device comes with five years of security updates and four generations of OS upgrades, helping to extend the product lifecycle.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Fold5 feature³⁰ a wider variety of recycled materials³¹ than their previous generations, including pre-consumer recycled glass and aluminum and post-consumer recycled plastics, sourced from discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles. Even the paper used for their packaging box³² is made using 100 percent recycled material.³³

These innovations have also been purposefully designed for optimized longevity. Each device comes with five years of security updates and four generations of OS upgrades, helping to extend the product lifecycle.

Availability

The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 will be available for pre-order in select markets from July 26, with general availability starting August 11.

Galaxy Z Flip5 lets users express themselves with colors including Mint, Graphite, Cream and Lavender³⁴, as well as a range of accessories³⁵ including a Clear Gadget Case, Flap Eco-Leather Case, Flipsuit Case and easy-to-carry Silicone Case with Ring to create a more personalized look.
