Samsung Electronics today announced a new Galaxy Trade-In Program, which allows trade-in of Samsung Galaxy devices¹ at any time of the year on Samsung.com,² even if customers do not purchase a new phone. The program underscores Samsung’s commitment to boost the value of Galaxy devices for users in long-term by continuing to provide not only the premium quality of Galaxy phones, but the amazing savings being unlocked though the simple and secure trade-in process.

Start with a quick and simple sketch of what you want to see on a photo you’ve taken. In seconds, it will be converted into a photorealistic object that matches the mood of the photo — right before your eyes.

With Sketch to Image, your rough sketches are turned into stunning works of art. You can either layer them on top of an existing photo, like your favorite holiday pictures, or you can even start with a blank canvas and create something beautiful from scratch. There are even additional options to further customize your creations by selecting from different styles, such as watercolor or 3D cartoon.

Let AI Remix Your Portrait

Across the many different social media platforms we all use, one common element is the profile picture. With Portrait Studio,³ you can create a profile photo that stands out. Usually, the photo that you take of yourself is the end product but with Portrait Studio, it’s just the beginning. Whether you’d like to see yourself as a comic book character, a 3D cartoon, a watercolor painting or a sketch, Portrait Studio can create something truly unique.

Start by taking a picture of yourself or anyone else you’d love to see transformed. Then select Portrait Studio, which you’ll find within Photo Assist in the Gallery app and choose the style of image you’d like the AI feature to create. From there, hit ‘Generate’ and let Galaxy AI make your photo instantly sharable. You’ll have a new and unique profile photo and everyone will be asking you how you did it.

Slow Motion Without the Preparation

We’re all used to taking pictures while on holiday or when hanging out with friends but sometimes you want to capture a moment in a way that a picture never can. A great video always catches people’s attention, and now you can use Instant Slow-Mo⁴ to give your clips an added sense of drama. That video of you pulling off an impossible trick at the skate park or gracefully waving a scarf in the sea breeze is much more fun when slowed down. Instant Slow-Mo makes it easy to create that effect in the videos you already have.

Galaxy AI enables this feature to work well for the times when you forgot to film in slow motion in the first place. It uses AI Frame Rate Conversion (AI FRC) technology to generate intermediate frames of movement to fill in the gaps between frames already there, which helps maintain quality.

To use Instant Slow-Mo, play a video in the Gallery app and tap and hold on the screen at the point you want to slow down. You can see the effect happen in real time, while also having access to additional options to perfect your video. To share the video with friends, it’s as simple as pressing the share button, viewing the preview, selecting to share the slow-mo clip, and using Quick Share to send it to your friends nearby.

Instant Slow-Mo will give a new creative streak to your clips and make you want to press play again and again.

With Galaxy AI on the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6, you’re never short of ways to make your photos and videos look amazing. The PDF Overlay Translation feature makes foreign language documents easily understandable without the need to copy and paste chunks of text into a translation website.

In September 2022, Samsung announced its new environmental strategy and committed to achieving company-wide carbon neutrality by 2050 and joining efforts to tackle climate change. To that end, the company has reduced carbon emissions by more than 900,000 tons and increased the use of renewable plastics by threefold compared to 2021.

Yeseul O expresses the value of life’s small pleasures through her distinctive character called “Metabun_ny,” while artist Lee Eun incorporates messages of encouragement for people into her designs.

As for the Galaxy Z Flip5, Yeseul O and Lee Eun’s artworks are recreated as animated designs using near-field communication (NFC) technology, providing customers with a new and immersive experience. Once users insert the “Flipsuit card” with NFC technology into the case, the image of the card is displayed as an animation on the Flex Window of the Galaxy Z Flip5’s external screen.

Improved Multi Window Experiences

One of the most powerful features of the Galaxy Z Fold series is Multi Window,⁵ which has been enhanced for better productivity. The experimental features offered through Labs in the previous version — Pop-up view, which lets you turn an app into a pop-up window by dragging down the upper right corner, and Split Screen View, which splits your screen when you swipe with two fingers — have now become official One UI features starting with the Galaxy Z Fold5. For instance, if you want to take notes while reading, simply use two fingers to open a Multi Window with a notepad. You can conveniently write down your ideas with easy access to two side-by-side windows on a single screen.

Create Easier and Faster

The Galaxy Z Fold5 also introduces the innovative two-handed Drag and Drop⁶ feature — a remarkable addition that elevates multitasking on the big screen. You can use one finger to hold an object and another to interact with other features, delivering a whole new level of efficiency and convenience. For example, press an image in your gallery with one finger and simultaneously use a different hand to bring up a new window and attach that image to an email. When moving an app to another page, just hold down the icon and use your other hand to swipe through the home screen to place it just where you want it. This multi-touch upgrade unlocks huge potential for productivity on the Galaxy Z Fold5.

These efforts to boost productivity have led to even more ways to multitask. Up to four most recently used apps can now be added to the Taskbar, allowing easy transitions between apps. While switching to a different app, you can open the pop-up window to multitask across apps and windows more conveniently than ever before.

The all-new Slim S Pen Case⁷ features a design that improves your experience with the S Pen Fold Edition. The sleeker and slimmer S Pen holder not only helps your phone lie flat, making it effortless to take notes on a table, but it also ensures that you’re able to write with a more comfortable grip. In addition, there is a toggle feature that lets you conveniently attach or detach the S Pen Fold Edition.

Visitors at Galaxy Unpacked 2023 could experience Samsung’s latest products inside a space decorated like a “hanok,” or traditional Korean-style house.

The Experience Zone was masterfully crafted by Kyung-sun Chae, art director of the global hit series “Squid Game.” Samsung Newsroom met with Chae to learn about the creation behind the one-of-a-kind Experience Zone at Galaxy Unpacked 2023.

Q. How do you feel being the director overseeing the Experience Zone at the first Galaxy Unpacked held in Seoul?

I’m proud that I got to showcase various features of the latest Galaxy devices and highlight Seoul’s charm to countless people through Galaxy Unpacked. My favorite part of this experience was developing the initial concepts for the Experience Zone. Through this event, I now have a new desire to introduce Korean culture and spaces to a wider audience using Galaxy technology.

Q. What are some differences between the Experience Zone you created for Galaxy Unpacked and production designs you’ve created in the past?

Production design is about visualizing text in video — it’s all about expressing the textual themes and distinct attributes of the characters in a visually effective manner.

For Galaxy Unpacked, I had to take a different approach from directing a production since actual visitors would be attending and experiencing the space in person. Because it’s the first time that new Galaxy devices are being unveiled in South Korea, I focused on presenting the modern aesthetics of Galaxy and accentuating the true beauty of Seoul, the city where tradition and technology coexist.

Q. What is the concept of the Experience Zone at Galaxy Unpacked 2023?

To me, it was meaningful that the event was hosted in Seoul. I wanted to create a harmonious space that displayed a fresh perspective of the city alongside the new Galaxy devices. This is how I decided on the concept of the Experience Zone — preserving existing perspectives, unfolding folded perspectives and sharing new perspectives.

To convey this, I actively utilized hanok, an architecture unique to Korea. As the traditional structure of hanok shares some similarities with the foldable structure of the Galaxy Z Flip5, I presented the experience of seeing one’s perspective expand or unfold by leaning on the structure of the hanok. I included themes of “openness” and “infinite expansion” from the world of Galaxy to complete the experience.

In addition, I applied Korean traditional landscape architecture, “chagyeong,” which means to lend scenery. In hanok, a window is like a frame that holds nature. Chagyeong allows you to fully appreciate nature and enjoy the expanded space through the frame, even from within the hanok. I implemented this design principle while designing and directing the Experience Zone.

I developed each Galaxy product booth using “changho,” the Korean traditional door of a hanok, and positioned them to form the shape of a lotus flower. Behind the traditional Korean door, the night view and futuristic landscape of Seoul are visible. Visitors can appreciate the new Galaxy products in a different light, as the products merge with the Seoul backdrop.

Lastly, I placed traditional elements throughout the entire Experience Zone. I recreated what Seoul looked like in the past by using the traditional walls and structure of hanok as well as other historical items such as “soban,” a small tray-like table. I designed the wall with glass material to mirror the vision behind Galaxy, which seeks to preserve existing values while continuing to evolve and innovate.

I hope the visitors will enjoy both the Seoul skyline and the new Galaxy products through this unique space.

Q. What inspiration did you get from the new Galaxy products when designing the space?

The Galaxy Z Flip5 has many unique characteristics with its ingenious foldable form factor and sophisticated design. These characteristics resemble Seoul as the city simultaneously embraces both tradition and modernity by combining the familiar with the unfamiliar. In particular, I used the decalcomania method, inspired by the Galaxy Z series, to portray Seoul at both day and night.

I highlighted the contrast between the city’s day and night by using black and white in the background. I also utilized the mint color of the Galaxy devices and Korean traditional patchwork material to create Seoul’s cityscape, which shine brightly at all times of the day. In addition, I expressed shadows by utilizing Galaxy products. The structure that was made with the folding screen as the motif, in which visitors can draw the shadows to express their uniqueness, was inspired by Galaxy foldable.

Q. You have been the art director of various historical TV dramas that capture the different aesthetics of Seoul. Did that influence the design process when creating the Experience Zone for Galaxy Unpacked?

Throughout the ideation and creation process for Galaxy Unpacked, I aspired to create a space that gave visitors a chance to enjoy traditional Korean hanok as well as Galaxy products. I hope that everyone who visits the Experience Zone will have a memorable experience at the very first Galaxy Unpacked event in Seoul.

Galaxy Z Flip5: The Ultimate Tool for Self-Expression

The Galaxy Z Flip5 is the perfect accessory to capture how Galaxy users look and feel — complete with an innovative design and a variety of all-new customizable features. The most apparent change was the exterior design. Flex Window, the largest Cover Screen on a Galaxy Z Flip yet, takes the camera experience of a foldable phone to the next level. Today, when you reach into your pocket and pull out your phone, you’re often greeted by a screen nearly the size of a tablet. Foldable smartphones have become an integral part of our daily lives. Behind this seamless integration is the pursuit of innovation by Samsung Electronics and its dedicated employees who have built the foundation for the Galaxy Z Fold to become a mainstay in the mobile market. Samsung Newsroom sat down to detail the journey of the Galaxy Z Fold series, from conception to creation, as it continues to unfold with new features year after year.

In 2019, Samsung’s Galaxy Fold shattered the conventional notion of mobile phones. Featuring a remarkable 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display, this revolutionary device offered users a tablet-like experience right from the palm of their hands. Thanks to its precise hinge technology, the phone could be effortlessly folded like a book, ensuring portability without compromising functionality. This achievement was a result of innovation across all areas, from materials to technology.

The larger screen opened new possibilities for more versatile content viewing. For example, users could split the display into two or three sections based on their preferences. To make multitasking easy, Samsung added the Multi Window feature, allowing users to run multiple apps simultaneously. What’s more, content being viewed on the Cover Screen could continue without interruption when the phone was unfolded. This device brought a whole new level of productivity and engagement that was not possible with other smartphones, inviting users into an entirely new world.

The following year, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold2, an upgraded version of the Galaxy Fold that incorporated valuable user feedback on the foldable experience. The main display was overhauled to maximize user immersion, now boasting a larger 7.6-inch screen with a sleek design that eliminated the notch and left only a camera hole. Additionally, the cover display was expanded to 6.2 inches, significantly enhancing usability on the go.

The Galaxy Z Fold2 also introduced a groundbreaking feature called Flex mode, a unique user experience that divides your screen as you partially fold your phone between 75 and 115 degrees. In addition to this innovation, the camera capabilities were enhanced for even better photos — Auto Framing automatically adjusts the camera’s shooting range by recognizing faces and movements, while Dual Preview allows both the user and the subject of the photo to view the preview on the Main and Cover Screen simultaneously. With the combination of Flex mode and these camera upgrades, anyone could now easily become a content creator.

The Galaxy Z Fold2 not only improved multitasking capabilities but also simplified the way users managed multiple tasks on their smartphones. With the improved Multi Window, users have the flexibility to adjust the screen layout based on their needs. They can also smoothly move texts and images between different running apps. Additionally, the App Pair feature eliminates repetitive and time-consuming setups by allowing users to save combinations of frequently used apps and open them together as a single group. These upgrades streamlined multitasking immensely to create a hassle-free mobile experience.

To ensure that users no longer needed to worry about accidental drops or water damage, Samsung’s third-generation foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G, introduced significant durability improvements. Making history for foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G was the first to offer IPX8 water resistance,¹ allowing consumers to comfortably use their phones with wet hands while cooking or enjoy their beach vacations without concern. The main display became 80% more durable than its predecessor through the application of a protective film made from new materials.² By incorporating Armor Aluminum, the strongest material used in Galaxy devices to date, and Corning^® Gorilla^® Glass Victus^®, users’ smartphones were safeguarded no matter the circumstances. In addition, the phone was verified by Bureau Veritas after undergoing rigorous testing to withstand 200,000 folds.³

The Galaxy Z Fold3 5G boasted a stunning 7.6-inch main display that truly shined. The Under Display Camera (UDC) technology places pixels over the camera hole to enhance light transmittance and adjust pixel spacing, resulting in a seamless widescreen experience. Users could enjoy videos, games and other immersive content with a fully utilized display, free from any visual disruptions caused by a camera hole. Moreover, the new display incorporated Eco² display technology, boosting brightness by approximately 29%, to ensure users could experience a remarkably clear display even in direct sunlight.

For the first time ever in the series, the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G introduced support for the S Pen Fold Edition, a tool that maximizes efficiency when used on a foldable screen. Whether you need to sketch on the screen or quickly jot down notes, the S Pen Fold Edition is readily available. Simply remove it, and you’re ready to go. When you double tap the main display while pressing the side of the S Pen Fold Edition, Samsung Note opens instantly — helping you take notes whether you’re watching an online course or talking on the phone. By offering limitless possibilities for work, study and more, this addition brought a new level of enjoyment and unlocked countless ways to utilize the phone.

The Galaxy Z Fold4 introduced remarkable improvements in both weight and display size. At only 263 grams, the device’s screen featured a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display, while the cover display became wider and shorter to maintain a stable aspect ratio. This design enhancement ensured that users could comfortably type and freely utilize most apps even when the smartphone was folded.

In today’s world, the boundaries between workspaces and non-workspaces have become increasingly blurred, whether you’re at the office, home, coffee shop or park. Recognizing this, the Galaxy Z Fold4 elevated its multitasking capabilities to a whole new level. The Taskbar feature, reminiscent of the familiar taskbar layout on PC screens, allows users to add their favorite apps for easy access. This not only simplifies the transition between different app screens but also allows for the intuitive Drag and Drop feature, enabling users to display multiple apps simultaneously. In addition, the App Pair feature works directly with the Taskbar, so users can save even more time.

The added swipe gestures took the phone’s multitasking capabilities even further. With simple finger gestures, users could split the screen or bring up pop-up windows, making it incredibly convenient to view multiple apps on a single display. By dragging a finger from a corner to the center, the current app transforms into a pop-up window. Swiping two fingers from the right, left or bottom splits the screen, displaying the current app on both halves. Furthermore, Samsung’s strengthened support for productivity apps such as Google Chrome, Gmail, Microsoft Office and Outlook, enabling users to effortlessly manage various tasks no matter where they unfold their smartphones.

This year, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold5, the series’ lightest and most groundbreaking foldable yet. The latest addition combines the power of an immersive, large screen with a sleek and lightweight design, offering unparalleled portability at only 253 grams without compromising performance. The Galaxy Z Fold5’s 7.6-inch Main Screen provides an expansive and uninterrupted viewing experience, regardless of whether users are enjoying their favorite videos in portrait or landscape mode.

Gamers will be thrilled by the addition of Snapdragon^® 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, which enhances graphics and uses AI to deliver a next-level gaming experience on the large smartphone screen ever.

Productivity gets a boost with the improved Taskbar, two-handed Drag and Drop and hidden pop-up feature, allowing users to multitask and transfer content between multiple apps with ease. In addition, the phone supported Multi Window, enabling multitasking by simultaneously displaying different content on each screen.

Continuing the legacy of the Galaxy Z Flip, the debut of the Galaxy Z Flip3 took the series’ design and performance to new heights. The expanded Cover Screen was one of the phone’s most notable upgrades, now four times larger than its predecessor. Going beyond its traditional role of displaying the time and date, the device’s Cover Screen was maximized for both self-expression and productivity. Users could unlock their creativity by customizing their Cover Screen with images or GIFs and conveniently view up to eight lines of notifications and messages. The Galaxy Z Flip3 also boasted a variety of camera features that elevated the user’s photography experience to capture and share moments hands-free through Flex mode. With the addition of Auto Framing, the camera detected the location and number of people or objects within the frame and automatically adjusted the format accordingly for photos and videos. Suppose a photographer and the subject of a photo wanted to view the preview of a shot at the same time. In that case, all the user needed to do was tap the Dual Preview button at the top right-hand corner of the screen. Furthermore, users never missed a shot while striking a pose with the enhanced Quick Shot.

Not only could the Galaxy Z Flip3 fit nearly anywhere, but it also offered improved durability and water resistance. The lightweight exterior was crafted from Armor Aluminum, the strongest material used in Galaxy devices to date, and Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus®, safeguarding users’ smartphones for any condition. A new protective film placed on the main display improved durability by 80% compared to the previous generation. The Galaxy Z Flip3 was also the first to be equipped with IPX8 water resistance¹ — breaking new ground for foldable phones and granting users peace of mind.

In 2022, Samsung released the Galaxy Z Flip4, complete with a host of practical features that effortlessly fit into daily routines. For instance, users could experience the convenience of the Flex mode panel² which opened a touchpad that supports a range of gestures at the bottom of their screen. Similar to the cursor of a computer mouse, users could easily control various elements with a swipe of their finger — pausing, rewinding or playing videos without picking up the device. A Wider Variety of Recycled Materials in More Components

Earlier this year, Samsung expanded its innovative use of recycled materials in product design with the Galaxy S23 series, introducing new materials to more components. The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 advance these efforts, featuring a wider variety of recycled materials¹ in more internal and external components than previous Galaxy Z series smartphones. The newest foldable smartphones incorporate pre-consumer recycled aluminum and post-consumer recycled plastic sourced from discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles. They also scale the use of Corning^® Gorilla^® Glass Victus^® 2, which contains an average of 22% pre-consumer recycled glass content.

Not only did Samsung add more types of recycled materials used in each device, but the company also more than doubled the amount of device components that use a minimum of 10% post-consumer recycled plastic or pre-consumer recycled glass, or an average of 22% pre-consumer recycled glass. Both the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5² use recycled materials in 15 device components, an increase from six internal components in the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Z Fold4.

When it comes to packaging, Samsung continue to advance its efforts to reduce the presence of single-use plastic. That’s why the paper for the packaging box³ is made using 100% recycled material.⁴ The company also switched to recycled paper material for the front and back cover protector.

Last year, I expanded my responsibilities as head of Samsung’s MX Business, to lead our Corporate Design Center. My career as an engineer taught me that the most sublime designs are intertwined with technological innovation. “One UI 5.1 is the up-to-date example of Samsung’s commitment to providing Galaxy users with the latest innovations as soon as possible,” said Janghyun Yoon, EVP and Senior Executive, Software Office. “Over the past several weeks, we have worked closely with our service providers and carrier partners to bring One UI 5.1 to current Galaxy smartphones and tablets around the world within a few short weeks of the Galaxy S23 series announcement.”

Professional-Quality Camera and More Engaging Gallery

One UI 5.1 expands upon the recently upgraded camera features announced with the Galaxy S23 series. Galaxy users now have greater flexibility to create professional quality photos with Expert RAW⁴ features now available directly as part of the Galaxy Camera app. Simply select “More” while taking a photo to capture high-quality shots in their raw format. Additionally, enhanced AI-based Photo Remaster automatically improves deteriorated details of images by improving brightness, fine-tuning details and making color corrections even in backlit scenes. It also removes unwanted shadows and reflections for a picture-perfect photo.⁵

New navigation improvements also make it easier than ever to find photos within the Gallery app and create shared family albums.⁶ Simply tap a person’s face in a photo to conduct a search for more images while the Gallery app searches for faces of loved ones to recommend for family photo albums.

A Unique Mobile Experience Personalized for Every User

Samsung has long been focused on giving Galaxy users greater control over their devices by customizing various user interface aspects. One UI 5.1 delivers several exciting new features that allow people to fine-tune nearly every aspect of the mobile experience — from appearance, to communications, actions and more. Samsung introduced new features that can understand how devices are used and make recommendations accordingly. For example, the new dynamic weather widget analyzes current conditions and creates a custom design that reflects the climate. Modes and Routines have expanded to enable custom wallpapers, ringtones, touch sensitivity and fonts that can personalize specific activities for even more convenience. One UI 5.1 also improves the Smart suggestions widget⁷ by adding the ability to recommend Spotify⁸ tracks and playlists based on users’ activities, such as music for road trips or relaxing.

Greater Connectivity Throughout Galaxy Ecosystem

Samsung has also developed One UI to bring greater integration and connectivity throughout the mobile ecosystem and introduced features supporting this mission. Users can enjoy a connected ecosystem across their mobile and PC with expanded Multi Control between Galaxy Book and smartphones.⁹ This enables users to share the mouse, keyboard or trackpad of their Galaxy Book not only with their Galaxy tablet but now also with select Galaxy phones, allowing them to copy and paste text and drag and drop images from one device to another seamlessly — as if they’re the same, single device. Furthermore, Link to Windows enables users to browse with Samsung Internet on their phones to continue browsing the same pages on their PC¹⁰ seamlessly. These pages can also be opened from one device to another, making everyday life much easier.

One UI 5.1 software update starts to roll out for the Samsung Galaxy S22 series,¹ Z Fold4, Z Flip4, S21 series² and S20 series.³ Software updates for additional Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 will be available in the coming weeks.

Capturing Your Best Angle in Brazil

In Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in Brazil, passersby can catch a glimpse of the Galaxy Z Flip4 by viewing the large-scale, out-of-home (OOH) billboards centered around the theme of “Life Seen from the Best Angle.” This series of advertisements displays how the phone looks when it is folded. If you upload a selfie on social media with the hashtag #GalaxyExperienceRJ, the photo shows up on the large billboard in the shape of the Galaxy Z Flip4 cover display, which is located in Copacabana, one of the busiest neighborhoods in the city. In addition, the clock billboards installed in four places in São Paulo caught the attention of the public, as the billboards physically fold and unfold like the devices themselves.

Eye-Catching and Convenient Galaxy Z Flip4-Shaped Chairs in Belgium

In Belgium, Samsung installed chairs in the shape of the Galaxy Z Flip4 in bus stops. The phones can be used as actual chairs, providing both a convenient seat and a fun display for those waiting for the bus. The playful bus stop marketing began on August 26 and ran for about a month in five different places, including the luxury street Avenue Louise in Brussels and the street of the Antwerp Opera in Belgium.

Unleash Your Creativity With the Galaxy Z Flip4 FlexCam in Japan

Marketing in Japan for the Galaxy Z Flip4 showcased both the phone’s water resistant capability and FlexCam feature. By folding the phone in half and placing it in a tank filled with water, the phone camera captured a striking and imaginative photo showing goldfish flying in the sky. The campaign evoked a positive response and exploded in popularity in just under a month, racking up 240,000 likes in Japan in 20 days. The unique content generated curiosity among viewers, resulting in many comments of people wanting to try out the smartphone for themselves. The techniques used to make this content can be seen on the Instagram account of the Japanese influencer (@aaa_tsushi_).

A Phone That Moves With You in the Czech Republic

Starting on August 22, a purple tram displaying one of the iconic colors of the Galaxy Z Flip4 will be running throughout the city of Prague in the Czech Republic. Additionally, the Z Flip’s FlexCam has been shaped to match the tram’s window, making tram passengers appear as though they are subjects being filmed by the phone. More trams in different routes will feature this decorative wrapping until February of next year, helping to transport passengers while capturing the attention of those in the city.

Light up the Night With Galaxy Z Series in Taiwan

Combining both the latest technology and the new Galaxy smartphone devices, Samsung unveiled its Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 through a captivating drone show at Riyue Tan (Sun Moon Lake) in Taiwan. As the phones are both vertically and horizontally symmetrical, their design resembles a mirror. Similarly, the reflection of the Moon on the lake surface also has a mirror-like quality. Inspired by this imagery, Samsung Electronics Taiwan selected Sun Moon Lake for the site of the drone show, hoping to create synergy through the event with the similarities between the product and the location.

During the show, a total of 500 drones, which were synchronized and arranged over a training period of 30 days, were equipped with bright lights and moved throughout the sky to form the silhouettes of the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 as well as the word “Galaxy” and more. The drones decorated the night sky and touched the hearts of those at the event.

It’s gotten smaller but wider — Galaxy Z Fold4 is still as compact as ever, with its even lighter weight and thinner hinge and bezels. When you unfold your phone, the device’s even wider display delivers an immersive experience that can transform your current surroundings into a workspace anytime, anywhere. The UDC (Under Display Camera), located under the screen, helps you focus on your work by minimizing factors distracting your field of vision.

Thanks to the device’s 7.6-inch wide screen, you can even conveniently edit documents full of text. Just like using a small tablet PC, you can handle a variety of tasks that are more complex than simply reading or sending e-mails with your smartphone.

Galaxy Z Fold4’s Cover Screen has also gotten wider, making it even more convenient to use. The width of the Cover Screen has increased while the length has decreased, making the aspect ratio similar to that of other conventional smartphones. In addition, the phone has become thinner when folded, providing enhanced grip experience. Thanks to the wider width, you can comfortably enjoy most features, such as typing letters or watching videos, without ever needing to unfold your phone.

Work Efficiently From Anywhere With Enhanced Multitasking Features

The most striking characteristics of Galaxy Z Fold4 are its enhanced multitasking features. Along with the wider screen, the new Taskbar¹ feature and Multi-window help you get your remote work done fast and efficiently — as if you are using a laptop.

The Taskbar is a newly added feature, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t familiar. The Taskbar looks and functions just like the layout you are used to seeing on a PC. You can even add frequently used apps to personalize your Taskbar: All the apps saved as favorites on your home screen will also appear on the Taskbar.

You can fully take advantage of the wider display by utilizing Multi-window, which lets you simultaneously view up to three windows on the screen. If you’d like to open another app while using a different application, simply drag and drop the app from the Taskbar to somewhere on the side, top or bottom of the screen. You can also easily switch screens between apps or change the layout with its intuitive UI.

If you have a combination of apps that you frequently use together, then the App Pair feature will help you save time. With the App Pair feature, you can save up to three apps as a single group on the Taskbar. Using this feature will get rid of the hassle of having to launch each app and display each one of them on a split screen.

Use the S Pen to Work With Precision and Speed

With the S Pen for Galaxy Z Fold4, you can precisely control your mobile device as if working with a mouse on a PC. You can conveniently take notes on a large screen just as you would on a tablet, and you can also select only the necessary parts, such as text, links or photos to quickly copy and paste.

Make the Most of Work and Play at Every Angle

With Flex mode, you can make the most of your foldable phone by freely changing the angle according to your needs. For instance, by taking advantage of Galaxy Z Fold4’s multitasking features, you can launch multiple apps at the same time. You can use one window of the screen for a video call and another window to take notes on important information, all while also looking at a meeting material on the screen.

Taking a break is just as important as working efficiently. When it’s time to step away, try turning over your screen filled with work-related apps and instead watching a video on the Cover Screen to lighten your mood. Thanks to the thin bezels and the aspect ratio optimized for the Cover Screen, you can have an immersive experience while watching a video. With Flex mode, you can adjust your Galaxy Z Fold4 to best fit any situation.

Capture Work, Play and Everything in Between

Galaxy Z Fold4’s various features stand out whether you’re on or off the clock. For instance, during break time, you can enjoy watching videos or playing games on a large, immersive screen that brings your content to life. Small but important details such as the UDC (Under Display Camera), where the camera is placed under the screen, help minimize on-screen distractions and allow you to fully dive into the game.

In addition, Galaxy Z Fold4 users can also take advantage of the device’s large screen while snapping pictures. The larger image sensor and upgraded resolution enable high-quality shooting day or night. By enabling “Cover Screen preview,” the portrait can simultaneously check the preview on the Cover Screen while “Capture View” allows you to check the photos taken while using the camera.

Another notable feature that takes advantage of Capture View is the Zoom Map. With larger Zoom Map activated automatically on the Capture View area when the rear camera is magnified by 20 times or more, it allows you to compare the magnified image and the original image ratio side by side at a glance. Typically, locating a subject while zoomed in is difficult, as the quality lowers and small movements come across as very shaky on camera. However, larger Zoom Map makes it possible to locate a subject quickly and easily to capture that perfect shot.

Galaxy Z Fold4 pushes the limits of mobile devices with its wide screen and various multitasking functions. Galaxy Z Flip4 offers a full smartphone experience that folds into half the size for compact pocketability. Even when folded, it fits smoothly in users’ pockets. What’s more, plenty of its diverse features are even optimized to be used without flipping it open. For instance, with Quick Setting, you can turn on and off airplane mode or flashlight and easily adjust the screen’s brightness. Easily reply to messages, make a call or access your Samsung Wallet¹ — all from Z Flip4’s 1.9-inch Cover Screen. You can even easily pick the widgets you want to use right on the Cover Screen, making the Z Flip series even more convenient and accessible.

By simply pressing the side button twice, you can activate Quick Shot. This feature allows users to take high-resolution selfies by using the main cameras of Z Flip4 right from the Cover Screen. #1. 2010
The AMOLED Display: Bigger Is Better

One of the major benefits of a smartphone is that it allows users to enjoy content on a large screen with clear picture quality that sits right in the palm of their hand. Samsung kicked off the trend of the large screen era in the smartphone industry with the introduction of their AMOLED display. This display, developed using Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) technology, is characterized by its clear picture quality, self-luminescence and larger screen size.

The Samsung Galaxy S was the world’s first smartphone to be launched with a Super AMOLED display, an ultra-thin screen that consumes less power and provides crisper and more vivid picture quality. With the introduction of the Galaxy S in 2010, users’ interest became piqued in obtaining bigger screens — such as the 4- to 5-inch screens of the AMOLED display compared to the conventional 3-inches on other phones — on which to fully immerse themselves in their favorite content.

Samsung has continued to take its AMOLED technology to the next level by unveiling devices with more powerful and more advanced screens, such as the Galaxy S10, the world’s first mobile device with a High Dynamic Range10+ (HDR10+) supported Dynamic AMOLED display, and the Galaxy S21 series, which features a Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with an automatic refresh rate of up to 120Hz based on the content type. Samsung’s innovative technology has enabled silky-smooth scrolling and uninterrupted viewing experiences, even on larger screens.

#2. 2011
The Galaxy Note and S Pen: Adding Analog Touch to Digital Devices

As of 2011, it became no longer necessary to keep notebooks and writing instruments in our bags at all times. With the introduction of the Galaxy Note equipped with S Pen, it is now possible to save and share everything from memos to drawings right on our smartphone’s screen. At that time, the Galaxy Note was launched with an S Pen that supported 256 levels of pressure onto the device’s large screen. Since then, both the Note and the S Pen have become inseparable, and as the series has developed, both have evolved significantly.

For example, Samsung introduced Air Command for the Galaxy Note 3 to give users easy access to signature S Pen features when hovering their S Pen over the screen. The company also then incorporated Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology into the Galaxy Note 9 S Pen so that its stylus pen could also function as a remote control. For the Galaxy Note 10, the addition of Air Action features enabled users to remotely control their device when switching camera modes or zooming in or out, a marked change from previous models which only permitted users to take photos from a distance. In line with this innovative spirit, Samsung introduced the artificial intelligence (AI)-powered S Pen for the Galaxy Note 20 in order to provide users with a more delicate and sophisticated drawing experience, and as of last year, the innovative S Pen is now available on devices such as the Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold3 to expand its compatibility.

Samsung Knox: Your Trusted Mobile Bodyguard

We are now living in the era where most of our daily tasks and experiences can be undertaken all with a singular smartphone, meaning that the importance of security cannot be overemphasized. Samsung Knox has become a reliable shield for users concerned about information leakage or virus penetration.

Samsung Knox, installed on Galaxy devices since the Galaxy Note 3 in 2013, protects devices on a step-by-step basis from the chipset to the operating system (OS) and application level, while also blocking hacking and unauthorized access. In addition, thanks to its encrypted container space, a user’s personal and business data can be separated and managed safely.

In 2021, the company launched Samsung Knox Vault with the Galaxy S21 in order to thoroughly ensure the protection of ever-growing amounts of data. In addition to offering the industry’s highest level of security chipset (eSE, or embedded Secure Element) and a secure processor that prevents HW-level attacks, Samsung Knox Vault features a tamper-resistant security memory to protect a user’s various passwords and biometric information.

Superb IP Rating: Ultimate Protection From Dust and Water

In the early 2010s, if you accidentally dropped your smartphone while using it in water, nothing but despair awaited you. To mitigate this, Samsung expanded the horizon of smartphone experiences by applying waterproof and dustproof functions to the Galaxy S5 for the first time in 2014.

From the Galaxy S7 in 2017 onwards, IP68,¹ the highest waterproof and dustproof rating, has been applied to Galaxy devices in order to strengthen their performance. The IP68 rating is given to devices after testing in fresh water at a depth of 1.5m for 30 minutes. Galaxy users are now able to use their smartphones with peace of mind thanks to strong waterproof and dustproof technologies.

Samsung Pay: A Mobile Wallet in Your Pocket

It is no exaggeration to say that, after 2015, the trend of going ‘wallet-less’ saw a surge in increase. At this time, Samsung introduced Samsung Pay, a mobile payment service that replaces the cash and credit cards in a user’s wallet. Since this service was first introduced on the Galaxy S6 in 2015, it has established itself as a core representational service of the Galaxy smartphone.

When using public transportation, as well as when out shopping, users need just touch their smartphone instead of having to get out their wallet to pay. These days, leaving the house without a wallet has become a normal habit.

Advanced Camera Technology: The World’s First Dual Pixel Sensor

Smartphone camera technologies are advancing day by day, to the extent at which if you have a smartphone, you’re able to capture pictures and videos comparable to that of professionals.

In 2016, Samsung raised the smartphone camera function to a new level by installing the industry’s first dual pixel in the Galaxy S7. At that time, the dual pixel was an image sensor only seen in high-end digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras. By increasing the amount of light received by both the front and rear cameras, the Galaxy S7 was able to focus quickly and accurately, as well as take optimal photos in dark environments.

Samsung then combined an Ultra-Wide angle lens and intelligent SW in the Galaxy S10 to help users take even sharper pictures. The Galaxy S20 features a remarkable four quad cameras, raising the level of camera functionality once again. In particular, the optical zoom performance has been greatly improved; Galaxy S20 Ultra users can harness the Space Zoom function to zoom in up to 100 times, allowing them to take clear pictures of the night sky.

One UI is an interface that supports the unique user experience of Samsung Galaxy, and was first introduced in November 2018.

By dividing the viewing area and the touching area, the layout of One UI allows users to comfortably perform all operations with just one hand, and all necessary essential functions are included concisely on-screen so that everyone and anyone is able to use it easily. One UI is also characterized by a unified user experience as it has been applied consistently to devices across the Galaxy ecosystem, including smartphones, tablets and wearables.

One UI 4, updated last year, harnesses a completely different color palette with which to decorate a device’s home screen, icons, notifications and wallpapers in your own style. In addition, One UI 4 features strengthened security features, such as allowing users to easily select what to share and what to keep private in order to keep up with users who increasingly value their individuality and their privacy.

Galaxy Z Series: The Dawn of the Era of Foldable Smartphones

In 2019, Samsung pioneered the field of foldable smartphones by unveiling the world’s first Galaxy Z Fold, equipped with a 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display.

Samsung’s newly developed hinge technology makes it possible to open and close the smartphone as smoothly as one opens a book, and offers users secure, long-lasting flexibility that passed a test to withstand 200,000 folds. In 2020, the company’s foldable lineup was expanding to include the Galaxy Z Flip, which features a compact design as the screen unfolds vertically.

Samsung not only pioneered a new form factor, but also new usability options through such functions as Flex mode, which allows for more usage scenarios by fixing the hinge at a specific angle, and Multi-Active Window, which can open and run apps at the same time with applications optimized for the foldable screen for a split screen view.

Last year, Samsung expanded their foldable lineup with the Galaxy Z Fold3, which saw the inclusion of an S Pen and waterproof and dustproof technology, and the colorful, pastel-toned Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition, leading the era of foldable popularization.

An AI-Powered Eraser: Removing Unwanted Objects From Photos

As part of Samsung’s mission to expand the application of innovative AI technologies to all smartphones, the company introduced the Object Eraser feature that lets you remove any unwanted objects in your photos with just a touch.

The Object Eraser function, first introduced in the Galaxy S21 in 2021, is a photo editing tool that harnesses artificial intelligence. Simply by touching the object you want to remove from a photo and tapping the ‘object erase’ button, the object is deleted without the need for a separate editing program. Currently, this function is available on smartphones with One UI 3.1 or higher, such as the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Fold3.

Samsung first applied its AI-powered interface, Bixby, to the Galaxy S8 in 2017, and now users can control their major Galaxy devices using only their voice. In addition, Samsung has been incorporating AI technologies into its device OS, battery and camera in order to improve performance and convenience.

Galaxy for the Planet: For a Sustainable Future

Samsung is fully committed to minimizing the environmental impact of its products throughout the entire lifecycle of its smartphones, from the design to the production stage through to their usage and disposal, in order to ensure that Galaxy smartphones contribute to greater environmental sustainability. Under the sustainability vision of its Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, “Galaxy for the Planet,” Samsung is consistently working to achieve a circular economy by reusing and recycling resources in order to build a better Galaxy ecosystem.

One such effort towards sustainability is a reduction of plastic usage in smartphone packaging. The percentage of plastics used in the Galaxy S21 packaging accounts for a mere 4 percent of the total weight, cutting down the waste generated per packaging unit by 49 percent as compared with that of the Galaxy S7. In addition, the Galaxy S21 packaging contains only 58 percent of the paper used in that of the Galaxy S7, helping save some 44,802 trees a year. Samsung plans to exclude plastic materials in its product packaging and apply recycled materials to all of its products in the MX division by 2025.

The products set to be unveiled at Galaxy Unpacked 2022 are drawing attention thanks to the revelation that they have been designed using eco-conscious materials recycled from marine waste. Samsung has succeeded in transforming discarded fishing nets, a major contributor to marine pollution, into a material with which to produce smart devices, and the company plans to apply this material to all its products in the future.

IP68 is the highest rating for dust and water resistance. An essential element to bringing a movie or TV show’s characters and narrative to life is the background that is shown behind them. When the location of the characters’ life and events are vivid, an audience is automatically more naturally drawn into the story. In essence, the perfect space can serve as a canvas on which a narrative is painted.

Taeyoung Kim is the first Korean location manager, who over the past 20 years has scouted many beautiful spaces for all kinds of classic productions. In his journeys to find the perfect spots, Kim’s Galaxy Z Fold3 has become his trusted partner, so Samsung Newsroom tagged along on Kim’s latest road trip to discover some new shoot locations with the help of Galaxy Z Fold3.

The Secret Formula to Scouting the Perfect Scene for a Shot

“All spaces have stories:” this is Taeyoung Kim’s philosophy. Kim understands that, wherever a place may be, it is drenched with the traces of the people who have been there over the ages. Kim’s job as a location manager is to discover the story that a space holds and then bring new value to that space. In order to find those special spaces capable of bringing a scene to life, he has traveled more than 800,000km – the equivalent of 20 journeys around the Earth – and accumulated more than 3 million photos for location scouting purposes.

As soon as Kim receives a scenario, he pictures the scenery he wishes to find in his head. After running through tens of thousands of different combinations in his mind, he begins to search for the right places. In the past, he would carry 7 to 8 atlases around with him at all times – to the point where they became torn and worn out. Then, he would have to take photos of each space using a heavy camera and subsequently have to get those photos printed for meetings. Luckily, with his introduction to Galaxy smartphones and Galaxy Z Fold3, these inconveniences are now a thing of the past.

Not only has Kim been able to switch out his heavy-duty camera for a high-resolution camera, but he has also been able to conveniently note, record and share potential locations using navigation, GPS and real-time location sharing on his Galaxy Z Fold3. Kim has been using Galaxy smartphones since the release of the Galaxy Note3, and these days harnesses the Galaxy Z Fold3 for his work. “With my Galaxy smartphones, I have been able to significantly cut down the time and cost it takes to discover a location,” said Kim. “I am now able to solely focus on the space and the scenario I am looking for by simply holding up my smartphone in one hand instead of having to carry around heavy equipment such as a camera and a tripod.”

Galaxy Z Fold3, the Perfect Partner for Taeyoung Kim’s Scouting Journeys

A location scouting trip is all about discovering the optimal place to match the scenario formed already in Kim’s head. To ensure a successful trip, Kim has a selection of essential items that he always keeps with him in his bag. The latest addition to this list of items is his Galaxy Z Fold3, which has replaced his previous duo of a Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy Tab S7. In addition to his smartphone, Kim carries with him his Galaxy Book Flex Alpha, an external hard drive, a scenario book, a drone device, snacks for the trip and a distance measuring device.

Packing and transporting his equipment when heading out on scouting missions has become much simpler for Kim since he acquired his Galaxy Z Fold3. Thanks to the Galaxy Z Fold3, Kim is able to take photos of a location and examine them at a wide angle in a single frame using the device’s large screen, a functionality he previously enjoyed when using the ultra-wide lens of his Galaxy S21 Ultra. In addition, when it comes to exploring more precarious places, such as valleys or cliffs, with Galaxy Z Fold3, all Kim needs to do is hold up his smartphone. “Thanks to the small and lightweight nature of the device, as well as its high-performing camera, I can record the places I have visited without ever having to worry about missing a spot,” noted Kim. “The whole process has been made so much more convenient with the Galaxy Z Fold3.”

Furthermore, as Kim is reviewing an image on the expansive screen of his Galaxy Z Fold3, he is also able to make notes of any relevant information – such as location details, hazardous factors, usable space, dimensions and more – with his S Pen on the spot. This ability to take notes immediately on his smartphone has enabled Kim to capture any inspiration that comes to him when viewing a location as it happens. “Applying cinematic elements to a photo I have taken of a potential location requires some explanation,” explained Kim. “Being able to include figures or other images in these pictures makes it much easier for people to understand my train of thought; my Galaxy Z Fold3 and S Pen have come in extremely useful when it comes to sharing my location scouting images with cinematographers, art directors and producers.”

Once Kim has finished his ideation process and is ready to scout out a location, all that’s left is to embark on is the journey itself. With the Galaxy Z Fold3, all this means doing is entering the location into the navigation system – and off he goes.

Q. Why did Samsung decide to create the Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition?

The idea first came when we noticed a customization trend emerging across all aspects of society. From luxury goods to everyday sneakers, we’ve noticed that consumers are seeking out products that they can tailor to their own tastes and style. Now more than ever, consumers want the ability to express their individuality. With that in mind, we felt that the timing was right for a device that users could truly make their own.

For the past year, Samsung Galaxy has committed to openness – a dedication to creating technologies that help our users eliminate boundaries in their lives. We believe technology should reflect each customer’s individuality, especially the mobile devices that users spend the most time with. We wanted to create a device that was designed, inside and out, to empower users to express themselves.

The Galaxy Z Flip3 was the perfect fit, as users were already connecting with the Galaxy Z Flip series in creative ways. Since the launch of the first edition, we had seen an increase in custom cases, device skins and accessories. We saw that desire for customization and took it a step further with the Bespoke Edition.

Q. What is the theme that drives the design of the Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition?

The Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition is driven by the idea of “Celebrating Escape.”

Due to the difficulties from the pandemic, online exhibitions, performances and festivals have become the only available outlet for people to escape from their daily frustrations. During these challenging times, we wanted to offer our customers a unique mobile experience — one that allows them to escape the uncertainty of our world by giving them a chance to shine and express themselves. The Bespoke Edition breaks industry norms as operations are typically built to handle mass production rather than personalization. In this instance, we wanted to move away from the tried-and-true colors that dominate smartphones and lean into hues that stand out.

Q. Did you have a particular user in mind when designing the Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition?

The Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition is built to appeal to more than just one type of individual. In fact, each Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition is made to order, designed by you to match your unique tastes. We didn’t have a particular user in mind. Rather, we embraced the unique, multidimensional lives of our consumers by giving them a personalized mobile experience.

Every one of us belongs to different groups and identities, and we move between them fluidly. This is especially true of younger generations, who recognize that it is natural to belong to these different groups. They want brands that accept a wide range of experiences and preferences.

We wanted to create a device that reflects this reality and empowers users to express their identity in a way that feels authentic to them.

Q. How did you select the colors for the Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition?

The color selection process was done in three phases: color concept definition, color selection and post-launch review.

During the first phase, we worked together with various teams at Samsung, as well as global color experts and trend specialists, to gather insights on consumer preferences and global Color Material Finish (CMF) trends. After this in-depth research, we developed an overall color concept for the Bespoke Edition and named it “Celebrating Escape.” Celebrating Escape is all about breaking from industry norms. We, as a design team, wanted our customers to truly enjoy this out-of-the-box experience and pursue uniqueness through bright and expressive colors.

In the next phase, we established a color pool based on our research, which we eventually narrowed down to the final selection. At first, we had a wide spectrum of colors to choose from, so we started the long process of narrowing down our pool. To finalize five color options for the Bespoke Edition, we went through numerous internal surveys. We paid particularly close attention to our millennial and Gen Z employees. In one case, for example, our top management was not convinced by the yellow color option, as it was not something commonly seen in the mobile industry. But our internal survey results showed high affinity for yellow among millennial and Gen Z employees, so we included it in our final five color options.

The final stage in our color development process is a post-launch review and validation. We are now in this stage for the Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition, reviewing customer feedback and sales results. Data gathered from this research and analysis will be used for future products.

Q. Why did Samsung choose only five colors for the Bespoke Edition?

Selecting the number of color options was a delicate process. We made our final decision while considering the paradox of choice, a popular psychological theory which states that an abundance of options requires more effort in decision making. We didn’t want our customers to feel overwhelmed with too many color options.

As for myself, our team experimented with our color pool and conducted over 1,280 simulations to sort out the best colors. It was truly a tough process, but we landed on a final selection of two frames and five color options that perfectly complement each other, no matter the pairing.

Q. How is the design of the Bespoke Edition different from the standard Galaxy Z Flip3?

The key differentiation of the Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition is the pursuit of uniqueness through color. While the standard Galaxy Z Flip3 uses colors that will satisfy the majority of people and emphasizes a simple tone-on-tone composition with metal frames, the Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition is designed to help our users break the mold and pursue more unique combinations with bright and expressive colors.

In addition to the customizable color options, the Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition also comes in special edition packaging with a Bespoke Edition wallpaper and background for the Cover Screen that match the device’s colors for a fully coordinated look.

Q. What is the most popular color for the Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition so far?

Globally, white on both sides with a silver frame is the most popular option. Many also choose pink for both sides with a black frame. In the U.S., however, the yellow and blue combination with a silver frame is currently the most popular choice. We love to see which variations become more popular across different regions, and how consumers are drawn to different combinations. It reinforces why we are offering the Bespoke Edition in the first place.

[Question 1] What’s new with the trendiest Galaxy Z Flip3 yet?

What stands out the most at first glance is the Galaxy Z Flip3’s Cover Screen. The 1.9-inch Super AMOLED display is about four times larger than the previous version. The model boasts a simple exterior that incorporates the Cover Screen and camera into a single area. The exterior of the smartphone features a simple and soft two-tone look, along with a unique coating that makes the design appear even more sophisticated. The black part is glossy, while the colored part is matte. When holding the smartphone, the power button can be reached with user’s thumb, making it easy to utilize the Cover Screen and its various features, even when the device is folded.

Samsung went to great lengths to refine the Galaxy Z Flip3’s form. The result is a design that not only looks soft, but feels soft as well. The front, back and sides have all been meticulously polished. The Hideaway Hinge, which allows users to flatten or fold the smartphone at various angles they want, is even slimmer than the previous version. The Galaxy Z Flip3 is designed to protect the hinge against dust and external particles, without compromising its beautiful design.

Various color options and accessories that are suited to users’ unique tastes add to the Galaxy Z Flip3’s external charm. [Question 2] How can you customize and use the much larger Cover Screen?

The Cover Screen of the Galaxy Z Flip3 has evolved from a means for displaying information like the time and date into a blank slate that can be used to show off user’s unique style. By accessing the Cover Screen’s Options menu under Settings, users can choose from a variety of clock types, wallpapers and colors. They can also select a photo or GIF from their gallery to make their Cover Screen their own.

The Cover Screen features all-new features to go with its larger size. Without having to unfold the phone to use the Main Screen, users can enjoy various features using the power button, the volume button, or by simply tapping on the screen. One of the most noticeable features allows users to check their notifications. Users can use the Cover Screen to check their messages and app notifications by pressing the power button and swiping to the right. Tap the screen to view up to eight lines of messages and notifications, and tap on ‘Open Application’ at the bottom if you’d like to use the app on the Main Screen right away.

Users can also customize the frequently used widgets that appear on the Cover Screen. Swiping screen to the left allows users to view various types of widgets, including options for music, the weather, their earphones, voice recordings, and more. By setting up the Galaxy Buds2 widget on the Cover Screen, you can easily activate the earbuds’ Active Noise Canceling (ANC) or Ambient Sound modes.

The features of the Cover Screen don’t end there. Swipe down and you’ll see a pop-up window that allows you to toggle between sound modes and adjust the brightness of the Cover Screen. Swipe up to see a list of cards you’ve registered with Samsung Pay. You also have the option to make payments offline right away using the power button’s fingerprint recognition function.³

The Quick Shot feature comes in handy when you have no time to unfold the smartphone and open up the camera. Quickly press on the volume button twice to trigger the shutter. You can also adjust the angle using the Cover Screen. Simply show your palm to the camera or press the volume button to take photos.

[Question 3] The foldable advantage: What’s so convenient about folding?

With its built-in hinge, the Galaxy Z Flip3 provides a foldable experience that doesn’t come with typical smartphones. Users can use their hands freely when the device is folded, without a stand, so they can truly enjoy a hands-free experience. The Galaxy Z Flip3’s Flex mode, in particular, offers users an even more convenient foldable experience.

Flex mode splits the screen when the phone is folded at certain angles. For example, Flex mode enables users to perform various other tasks while video calling using apps like Google Duo, or when watching clips on YouTube. Even if an application does not support Flex mode, users can manually set it to be used in split screen by going to Settings → Advanced Features → Labs and accessing the Flex mode panel.

With the Galaxy Z Flip3, you no longer have to worry about your hands shaking when you’re taking a selfie. Simply open the camera and fold the phone to easily take photos and videos. The Auto framing feature, which can be activated with a tap of the button in the bottom-right corner, is particularly handy when taking videos. Auto framing adjusts the format for taking photos and videos automatically according to the location and the number of people or objects in frame. If both the user and the subject of the photo want to view a preview of the video at the same time, all the user needs to do is tap the Dual Preview button at the top right hand corner of the screen.

[Question 4] What’s multitasking like with the Galaxy Z Flip3?

Say you’re watching a video and you find yourself wanting to look up something from the video and also reply to your friends’ messages. Multitasking support has become a must for smartphones, and this is where the Galaxy Z Flip3’s Multi-Active Window feature truly shines. With the Galaxy Z Flip3, users can take part in up to three different activities at the same time using the device’s Drag & Split function. While using an application, simply activate the Edge Panel on the righthand side and drag the two other apps that you need to use. You can adjust the size of the apps’ windows using the divider.

If you have a certain combination of apps that you frequently use, use the App Pair feature to launch them faster. All you need to do is tap the three dots in the middle of the app divider, and then tap the icon on the right. Tapping on the app combinations you’ve saved in the Edge Panel will instantly activate the exact same split screen. If an application does not support multiple windows, you can activate it yourself by going to Settings → Advanced Features → Labs.

The annoying lag that users used to experience when quickly switching between screens has also been reduced. Furthermore, you can enjoy an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz by going to Settings → Display → Motion Smoothness, and selecting the ‘Adaptive’ option. Selecting ‘Standard’ will fix the refresh rate at 60Hz, which can help preserve battery life.

[Question 5] Is the Galaxy Z Flip3 safe to use when you’re out and about, or when caught in unexpected weather?

Durability is a must when it comes to comfortably using smartphones regardless of location or weather. While the exterior of the Galaxy Z Flip3 is thinner and lighter than the previous version, it is much more durable when it comes to external shocks. This is because the materials that were used to cover the smartphone, including Armor Aluminum and the tempered Corning^® Gorilla^® Glass Victus, are not easily damaged. This makes the smartphone less susceptible to damage, including bends and dents, which allows users to comfortably use their device without worrying about what would happen if they accidentally dropped it.

Tigers, lions, bears, giraffes, pandas, fennec foxes … These are some of the wild animals that live in Everland, the Land of Fantasy.¹ Everland takes care of endangered animals by making sure that they are raised in an environment closest to their natural habitats and organizes a variety of ecological programs to help visitors learn about the importance of nature and all living things. To dive into the world of the mysterious world of animals, Samsung Global Newsroom has created its Online Zoo series by capturing the animals with various Samsung devices.

We’re thinking of an animal that has shiny eyes, dainty, triangular ears, dark, chubby paws, and a long, bushy tail. Did you figure it out? It’s a lesser panda! (Also known as a red panda.) Just a glance of this cute little creature is sure to put a smile on your face. Unfortunately, unless something is done, lesser pandas may not be around for much longer. Over the last two decades, the world’s lesser panda population has more than halved. Now, only some 10,000 are left. This has led the International Union for Conservation of Nature, or IUCN, to officially classify lesser pandas as “endangered.”

Each year, on the third Saturday of September, the world celebrates International Lesser Panda Day. This year, that day falls on September 18. In celebration of International Lesser Panda Day, Samsung Newsroom organized a very special event with Da-seul Jeong, also known as Aeso, the illustrator who created the beloved emoji character Ompangi.

The collaboration offered Aeso an opportunity to observe lesser pandas and celebrate the creatures by creating a unique character. A total of eleven lesser panda-inspired drawings were transformed into stickers that can be utilized in our daily lives. Follow along as we recount Aeso’s first encounter with the lesser pandas, and how they inspired her to create a one-of-a-kind character.

Capturing Lesser Pandas’ Charm With the Galaxy Z Flip3

Standing between 50 and 60 centimeters tall, with a roughly 50-cm long tail and weighing between three to six kilograms, Lessy, one of the lesser pandas who calls Korea’s Everland zoo and theme park home, is a nocturnal animal who can typically be found being active or resting in the shade or on the branches of tall trees during the day. This male panda, who has lived alone for the last six years, is slightly sensitive and timid. Lemon, on the other hand, a female lesser panda who joined Lessy at Everland last year, is energetic and a little bit aggressive. The couple doesn’t always get along, and their rather tense form of chemistry fascinates visitors.

An expert on dealing with cute things, Aeso instantly recognized the lesser pandas’ endless charm. On International Lesser Panda Day, the Galaxy Z Flip3 served as her eyes and ears. The smartphone enabled her to not only take selfies on the Cover Display without unfolding the phone, but also allowed her to snap pictures with the screen folded at an optimal angle. This allowed her to capture the lesser pandas’ diverse and expressive movements.

“What struck me when I first saw them was their round shape,” said Aeso. “Their eyes, their ears, their paws… everything was round. This inspired me to create a character that was as round as possible.”

“I also noticed that they had white fur around their noses and ears,” she added. “I thought I should definitely use that. The Galaxy Z Flip3 helped me a lot when I was creating the characters by vividly capturing the lesser pandas’ unique characteristics.”

Giving Lesser Pandas Their Spotlight

When it came to creating a new emoji character, Aeso decided to start by observing the animals’ emotions. “I normally use the Galaxy Note10 to quickly take notes or draw images of emotions and situations that emerge in everyday life,” she explained. “Afterward, I consider how people can empathize with them. The countless emoji that have been created so far resonate with emotions that I have felt in daily life.”

After observing the lesser pandas’ expressions, movements and emotions up close, Aeso started drawing with the S Pen and the Galaxy Z Fold3, which is optimized for sketching. Her app of choice was Clip Studio Paint, a creative app that enhances the usability of tablets. She used the Galaxy Z Fold3 in various ways during the drawing process, placing the device wide open on the floor to make a rough sketch from a broad perspective.

The smartphone’s multitasking features, which allow users to open three apps at once in split-screen mode and five more apps as pop-ups, helped Aeso immerse herself in her work. “When I work, I usually move back and forth between windows containing reference images or materials,” she explained. “This time, it was incredibly convenient because I could see them all at once without needing to bounce back and forth.”

“My hands often hurt after long hours of drawing with pens,” she continued. “But when I used the S Pen that comes with the Galaxy Z Fold3, with its extraordinary grip and feel, even long hours of work didn’t feel so hard.”

When excited, lesser pandas tend to ‘dance’ and wag their tails. Sometimes, when they are observing something closely, they look rather serious. When they see bamboo, they appear to be full of joy. You can see some of these emotions in the drawings below.

Aeso hopes that the stickers will help inspire the world to take action. “I truly hope they can get through this crisis and stay around for a long, long time,” she added.
