Samsung Wallet serves as a single, secure destination for essential items such as payment cards, IDs, passes and digital keys. Once a compatible smart door lock is set up through Samsung SmartThings¹ using Matter, the global smart home standard, users can add a Digital Home Key to Samsung Wallet as part of the door lock onboarding process. Depending on device and lock capabilities, users can unlock their door by tapping their smartphone using near-field communication (NFC) technology,² using hands-free access with ultra-wideband (UWB)’s³ proximity detection or remotely through the app.

Samsung Wallet’s Digital Home Key adopts the Aliro standard, an industry-standardized communication protocol developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), to enable secure, interoperable digital keys for smart locks. Along these lines, Samsung is collaborating with leading smart lock brands to support Samsung Wallet Digital Home Key, including Aqara, Nuki, Schlage and Xthings.⁴

Digital Home Keys are securely stored within Samsung Wallet on the device and safeguarded by Samsung Knox,⁵ Samsung’s industry-leading security platform. The solution is designed to align with EAL6+⁶ grade certification standards, providing robust protection against unauthorized access to digital keys.

With this level of protection, users maintain control over their Digital Home Key, even if a device is misplaced. Access can be remotely managed or removed using Samsung Find, while biometric or PIN authentication within Samsung Wallet ensures that only authorized users can manage and use their home keys.

Starting with the Galaxy S25 series, Samsung offers Certified Re-Newed Galaxy flagship devices in Germany and the UK and Refurbished Premium by Samsung (Reconditionné Premium par Samsung) devices in France.

Samsung’s Certified Re-Newed devices undergo an in-house expert inspection and refurbishment process, which includes rigorous cleaning and more than 100 quality tests. In France, Germany and the UK, consistent quality is ensured by limiting eligibility for the CRN manufacturing process to top-grade returned products only. Each device is reconditioned to look and perform to Samsung’s high standards using genuine Samsung parts.¹

During the restoration process, all devices are reset to delete personal data and ensure they are sold in a condition equivalent to that of a brand-new device.² After refurbishment, CRN devices are packaged in a new box made from recyclable materials and include the same in-box items as a new device.

Ahead of World Alzheimer’s Day, Samsung Newsroom is highlighting Samsung Research’s ongoing work on the early detection of dementia.

The Importance of Early Diagnosis

Alzheimer’s disease is incurable and irreversible. Once symptoms appear, cognitive function declines steadily — disrupting daily life in profound ways.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), often considered a precursor to dementia, is of particular concern. Clinical tests reveal measurable cognitive decline in those with MCI, yet they remain capable of performing daily activities. According to studies cited by the Alzheimer’s Association, about 12 to 18% of people 60 and older live with MCI, and 10 to 15% of them progress to dementia each year. As a result, early detection and management of MCI has become a growing priority in the medical community.^1,2

Multiple studies show that changes in the brain can begin 10 to 20 years before the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease Dementia.³ Therefore, detecting these early signs is critical. While recent advances in therapies have raised hopes for treatment, early diagnosis combined with ongoing care remains the most effective approach today.

The benefits of early detection include:

• Implementing lifestyle modifications — such as enhancing diet, engaging in exercise and promoting cognitive stimulation — to help delay disease progression.
• Starting drug and non-drug interventions earlier to preserve cognitive abilities

Tracking Change Through Digital Biomarker Technology

Smartphones and wearables have become essential in daily life, capturing detailed information about users’ habits and behaviors. Device data captures subtle routine changes with remarkable high sensitivity.

Recognizing this potential, researchers at Samsung Research developed digital biomarker technology that tracks changes in cognitive function by analyzing multimodal data from smartphones and wearables — including app usage, typing speed, messaging patterns, call frequency, sleep and voice.

Researchers proposed that digital biomarkers could measure symptoms of cognitive decline identified in prior studies. By analyzing multimodal smartphone and wearable data, they estimated cognitive states, confirming that digital biomarker algorithms effectively track cognitive changes.

Recalling and repeating short sentences can evaluate short-term memory-related brain regions, while assessing speech fluency and accuracy reveals the state of language ability. Likewise, the regularity and variety of app and messaging use, along with call frequency, can offer insights into social networks and the brain’s executive functions.

In short, the study demonstrated that brain regions responsible for language and short-term memory — typically impaired by Alzheimer’s disease — can be assessed through voice data. The findings also indicate that declines in social and behavioral abilities are associated with patterns of app use, messaging and call frequency.

Detecting Decline With Everyday Data

In July, the Samsung Research team presented studies on smart device–based technologies for detecting cognitive decline at the International Conference of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) in Copenhagen, Denmark.

One study introduced technology that analyzes smartphone keyboard input patterns to detect early signs of cognitive impairment. The research prioritized analyzing nonverbal features like typing speed and correction patterns over examining user input to minimize privacy risks. The language-independent approach demonstrated significant global potential, and the paper ranked within the top 7% of papers presented at the conference.

Another study analyzed data from smartphones and Galaxy Watch sensors to monitor walking patterns — including gait speed, stride length and balance — for early detection of cognitive decline.

Both studies demonstrate performance comparable to hospital-based dementia screening tests by leveraging everyday behavioral data, eliminating the need for additional user input, and showcasing the potential to track cognitive changes through routine data.

Improving Quality of Life Using Technology

Digital biomarker technology is designed to improve the early detection of subtle signs of Alzheimer’s Disease that might otherwise go unnoticed in daily life. Samsung Research plans to continue validating the performance of its digital biomarker models while further advancing the technology.

Although continued collaboration with academia and the medical field is required for further refinement and improved accuracy, advances in early detection of dementia are anticipated to improve personal health, enhance quality of life and alleviate pressure on healthcare systems. Further research with academia and the medical community is needed for validation and enhanced accuracy, but ongoing advancements in this technology are expected to enhance personal health and quality of life while reducing the strain on healthcare systems.

Samsung Gaming Forum: Joint Endeavors With Like-Minded Partners

On August 22, Samsung opened The World of #PlayGalaxy with the Samsung Gaming Forum — putting collaboration at the forefront. The panel featured leaders from Google, HoYoverse, Qualcomm and Samsung, along with content creator Rurusama, to explore how joint innovation is advancing the mobile gaming experience.

Panelists highlighted how adoption of the Vulkan Engine for 3D graphics, chipset optimization and new gameplay features is reshaping the Galaxy gaming experience.

“We strongly believe in the vision of Vulkan, so we co-developed a long-term roadmap alongside Samsung and others,” said Scott Carbon-Ogden, Senior Product Manager at Google. He noted that the companies share a vision of building a Vulkan-based Android ecosystem and making Vulkan the standard application programming interface (API) by 2027.

HoYoverse’s Vice President of Global Business Development, Fish Ling, explained how Vulkan was successfully introduced to Genshin Impact and delivers a 17.1% better FPS performance at the heaviest game frames, enabling smoother, more stable mobile gaming experiences made possible with Samsung’s support. She also pointed to Game Help, a new feature within Circle to Search that lets players instantly access tips without pausing gameplay.

“The Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy is designed to deliver next-level gaming experiences by maximizing performance while maintaining power efficiency,” said Bobby Oh, Director of Gaming Global Partnerships at Qualcomm. He introduced the chipset as the powerhouse behind recent innovations and optimizations.

The forum underscored that these achievements were the result of collaboration across hardware, software and platforms by Samsung and its partners. The collective effort is helping ensure Galaxy devices remain at the forefront of mobile gaming.

The World of #PlayGalaxy Experience

After the Samsung Gaming Forum, attendees entered The World of #PlayGalaxy to experience a festival of gameplay that spotlighted Galaxy’s latest capabilities.

Fans explored zones created with Samsung’s partners that featured major titles such as PUBG Mobile, Honkai: Star Rail, Genshin Impact and Mongil: Star Dive. Hands-on play showcased the Galaxy devices’ performance, immersive visuals and vivid displays, while also illustrating how collaboration delivers smoother gameplay and richer experiences for users.

Special events added to the energy. PUBG Mobile influencers faced off in one-on-one battles, giving the crowd a taste of pro-level play. At Mongil: Star Dive booth, players raced through time-attack challenges that tested their skills and Galaxy’s performance.

The excitement continued on stage with creator-led talk shows and game-show style segments that blended entertainment and interaction, giving audiences new ways to engage with their favorite games and creators.

More than a device showcase, The World of #PlayGalaxy carried a strong sense of community. From collecting digital coins and snapping photos at the wall to picking up exclusive merchandise and sharing stories between matches, fans immersed themselves not only in the games but also in a culture of connection, creativity and play.

One of the highlights of The World of #PlayGalaxy was the #PlayGalaxy Cup, a tournament showcasing Galaxy’s performance and the passion of the gaming community.

Interactive elements let fans connect with Team Redox and Team Coa77k before the final showdown, where Team Redox claimed the title. Separate fan tournaments also gave everyday players a chance to compete, form new teams and test their skills under the same lights.

From the roar of the crowds at the #PlayGalaxy Cup to the bustle of the show floor, Samsung brought its gaming vision to life at Gamescom 2025 through its booth and The World of #PlayGalaxy — highlighting performance powered by Galaxy innovation, collaboration with partners and a global community shaping the future of mobile gaming.

The KPop Demon Hunters theme collection composed of Lock Screen, Home Screen, AOD, Phone Screen, Message Screen and Icons, includes eleven special designs inspired by the film unique visual identity.¹ The set features one special theme package spotlighting the in-universe K-pop groups HUNTRIX, along with ten character-based wallpapers² highlighting fan favorites such as Rumi, Zoey, Jinu, Derpy and Sussie.

The themes are designed to provide a consistent and visually engaging user experience across Galaxy devices. Closely aligned with the creative direction of the film, each theme enhances the overall look and feel of the interface while maintaining Galaxy’s standards for performance and usability.

The collaboration reflects Samsung’s ongoing commitment to expanding content-based experiences that enrich everyday life for Galaxy users. The company will continue to explore creative partnerships to deliver engaging and personalized UX that resonates with global audiences.

The themes will be available from 10:00 a.m. on Aug. 13 to 11:59 p.m. on Sep. 12 local time via a dedicated promotion page in the Galaxy Store.³ Existing Netflix users can unlock the themes simply by launching the Netflix app⁴ through the promotion page in the Galaxy Store. Users without the Netflix app are directed to the Netflix app download page in the Galaxy Store. After installation and launch of the app, they can download the KPop Demon Hunters Theme and Wallpaper through the promotion page.⁵

Samsung Wallet is a versatile platform that allows Galaxy users to organize digital keys, payment methods, identification cards and more — all in one secure and easy-to-use application. Launched in June 2022, Samsung Wallet offers a seamless interface protected by government-grade security from Samsung Knox.³ It smoothly integrates across the broader Galaxy ecosystem to offer powerful connectivity and fortified security for users in their everyday lives.

With the addition of the Mercedes-Benz Digital Key on Samsung Wallet, users can experience a new level of convenience at their fingertips. Once inside the vehicle, Samsung’s Digital Key allows drivers to start their vehicles without using their physical keys or even removing their smartphone from their pockets. They can also securely share the digital key with friends or family through an easy-to-use interface that lets them grant or restrict access as needed.

The integration of the Mercedes-Benz Digital Key with Samsung Wallet is also backed by Galaxy’s commitment to ensuring a safe, secure and reliable mobile experience for users. Digital keys are securely embedded within the device, meeting rigorous EAL6+⁴ security standards and providing protection against unauthorized access. By utilizing Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technologies, a standardized communication protocol set by the Car Connectivity Consortium, the digital key ensures precise functionality, significantly reducing the risk of unwanted attempts to access the vehicle.

If a device containing the digital key is misplaced or stolen, users can remotely lock or delete their digital keys via the Samsung Find service, further safeguarding their vehicles. With biometric or PIN-based user authentication requirements, Samsung Wallet carefully protects vehicles, ensuring every interaction remains private and secure.

Availability

Digital Key functionality for select Mercedes-Benz vehicles will roll out starting July 2025 in select regions⁵ worldwide. Users can register their Digital Key through the Mercedes me application.

This growth follows the feature’s receipt of CE (Conformité Européenne or European Conformity) marking for the European Economic Area. The CE marking affirms that Samsung meets the European Union’s health, safety and environmental protection standards, reinforcing its leadership in sleep technology. Additionally, the feature was recently approved by Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration and Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority.

The milestone builds on Samsung’s groundbreaking De Novo authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) — the first of its kind for a wearable device to detect signs of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.⁵ The Sleep Apnea feature was also approved by Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Brazil’s health regulatory agency ANVISA and Health Canada.

Supporting Marine Ecosystems Through Global Collaboration

Introduced at Galaxy Unpacked in January 2025, Coral in Focus is an initiative launched last year that supports local communities, including Fiji, Indonesia and the United States, to restore coastal ecosystems.

Samsung has partnered with Seatrees, a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring marine ecosystems, to explore new, innovative solutions for coral reef restoration. The company has introduced Ocean Mode¹ on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, an exclusive camera feature that enables vivid image capture even underwater. These images provide accurate visual data for marine researchers who create 3D photogrammetry models to continuously monitor and analyze coral reefs. Local partner organizations then use these findings to guide their on-site coral restoration efforts.

Ocean Mode: How Galaxy Camera Innovation Is Helping Restore Coral Reefs

Partners and local field teams use Ocean Mode to reduce the excessive blue tones common in underwater photography, allowing for a more accurate representation of coral colors. The feature also helps minimize motion blur through optimized shutter speed and multi-frame image processing. Additionally, the interval shooting function enables thousands of high-resolution coral images to be captured in a single session — improving both efficiency and image clarity.

With these coral restoration initiatives, photos taken with Ocean Mode have been used to produce 17 3D models of coral reefs to analyze the health and growth of reefs. In total, 11,046 coral fragments were planted to restore 10,705 square meters of coral reef habitat — roughly the size of 25 basketball courts.

Since unveiling its “Galaxy for the Planet” environmental vision in 2021, Samsung has continued its efforts toward a more sustainable future — not only by incorporating ocean-bound plastics from discarded fishing nets into its products but also by expanding into marine ecosystem restoration. These actions reflect the company’s ongoing commitment to reducing its environmental impact across the entire product life cycle and beyond.

Wonderland: Dynamic Customization for Lock and Home Screens

Wonderland enables users to create animated wallpapers for the lock and home screens — bringing a vibrant, dynamic aesthetic to the first screens encountered when the device is turned on.

Previously, the same wallpaper had to be applied to both the lock and home screens. However, in response to user feedback, each screen can now be customized independently for greater creative freedom.

Users can layer various design elements — such as images, text, videos and particle effects¹ — and apply motion effects including left-right, up-down and front-back movement to create 3D wallpapers that respond dynamically to device tilt and touch.

Moreover, users can personalize the transition effects between the Always On Display (AOD) and the lock screen to add a stylish touch to their device’s first impression. Detailed controls over transition speed and depth allow for playful effects, such as stickers that appear and disappear over an image.

As one of Good Lock’s defining features, Wonderland combines creativity with the satisfaction of a visually immersive experience.

Edge Lighting+: Customized Notifications That Catch the Eye

Edge lighting+ transforms everyday notifications into eye-catching visuals — adding a personalized touch to every alert that appears on the screen.

Through the Set Custom Style menu, users can fully customize the image, color and animation that accompany incoming notifications. Beyond default images, stickers created on Galaxy devices can be applied to give each notification a unique and personal touch.

This feature enables users to perform frequently used smartphone functions with a single thumb gesture, making it particularly helpful for multitasking throughout the day. The tool supports both left and right-handed users and allows specific functions to be assigned to horizontal, vertical or diagonal gestures. For instance, a left horizontal swipe could be set to “Back,” a right downward diagonal swipe to “Home” and an upward diagonal swipe to open “Recent Apps” or launch AI Select.

One UI 7 introduces seamless AI-driven experiences that help users to stay productive and explore their creativity.

With Galaxy AI, users can simplify everyday tasks, minimizing the need to switch between applications. AI Select³ intuitively recommends by understanding context. For example, a user can simple swipe the Edge Panel and click ‘AI Select’ icon when watching a video to save it as a GIF file. Writing Assist⁴ allows users to easily summarize or automatically format contents in which texts can be selected.

One UI 7 also enables simple edits to give users more creative control and freedom. Drawing Assist⁵ helps bring ideas to life with more than a single input, including combinations of text prompts and images or sketches. Audio Eraser⁶ makes advanced editing accessible for all, by isolating categories of sounds and removing unwanted noise in videos.

With deeper Google Gemini⁷ integration, controlling the device is as easy as speaking to a friend. Long-press the side button and say, “Find Italian, pet-friendly restaurants with outdoor seating nearby.” Gemini instantly pulls up recommendations in one seamless interaction.

Natural language search⁸ extends to Settings, making it easier to adjust preferences. Users can simply go into Settings and say “My eyes are feeling tired.” In an instant, recommended options such as adjusting brightness or turning on Eye comfort shield appear.

The beta program will be available for Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 in India, Korea, the U.K. and the U.S. starting from March 6, rolling out to more devices within the month¹ including Galaxy S23 series, Tab S10 series and A55. Private Sharing With Quick Share

Ever been in a situation like this? You want to share pictures of your newborn baby or a video from your recent holiday, but don’t want to risk them somehow ending up online or visible to anyone other than those you intended.

Samsung Galaxy has a built-in solution to this problem: Quick Share’s Private Sharing, a privacy-preserving file-sharing function that lets you share your data with peace of mind.

With Private Sharing, you and you alone own the data. You can ensure that only the designated recipients can open the files you send — no one else. You can also set permissions and expiration dates for the data, so it’s only viewable for a limited amount of time. Furthermore, you can give read-only access without the ability to re-share, revoke the data access whenever you like, restrict screenshotting and see when the recipient received and opened the file.

Private Sharing makes it safe and easy to share your content, and you can share up to 20 files at once with a total size of up to 200MB.¹ And of course, all your files are securely and fully encrypted when shared, courtesy of blockchain-based encryption technology.

To use Private Sharing, select the file you want to send and tap the Share icon. Tap Quick Share, followed by the three dots for more options in the top right corner. Then select Turn on Private Sharing. Once the message has been sent, you can check what you’ve sent and change the expiration date or revoke sharing permissions.

No more worries about misfiring a private photo or file, or having your information fall into the wrong hands. With Quick Share’s Private Sharing, you’re in control of your data and whom you choose to share it with, with visibility into file share status every step of the way.

Enhanced Data Protection With End-to-End Encryption

Here’s a moment that would make anyone panic. You receive a notification that something’s gone wrong with a website you visited, and the server where your sensitive account details are stored has been compromised.

No one wants their data leaked. But with Galaxy’s Enhanced Data Protection, you can be confident that your data remains secure in the Samsung Cloud.

Starting with the Galaxy S24, Enhanced Data Protection offers additional protection for Galaxy devices when you sync or back up your data with Samsung Cloud.² This feature mitigates data loss via end-to-end encryption (E2EE), which ensures data can only be encrypted or decrypted on your device and cannot be seen by anyone but you. In other words, you can connect to other devices while staying secure, and your data will be kept safe even if a server is compromised or account details are stolen.

When you activate Enhanced Data Protection, you’ll be prompted to write down a recovery code to help prevent the loss of your data in the event you lose your device.

To use Enhanced Data Protection, open the Samsung Cloud app, tap the three dots for more options, choose Settings and then Enhanced Data Protection. From here, you can choose to encrypt backup or synced data. Alternatively, you can open your device Settings and go to Security and Privacy to find this feature.

Samsung Electronics today announced that it will provide an even smarter and more streamlined Samsung Wallet experience to French residents and tourists in France. Beginning this summer, Samsung Wallet will support Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM) integration on Samsung Galaxy devices,¹ ensuring seamless public transportation services across the Île-de-France region through Navigo Travel Card access. The Add to Wallet function will also make it easy for visitors to the region to enjoy popular Paris attractions and sites. And together with new partner, Air France, Samsung Wallet will enable a convenient flight ticket management experience on Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

Enabling Hassle-Free Local Transport in Paris

This summer, residents and visitors can enjoy a seamless public transport experience within Île-de-France region through global IDFM support.² Users can easily access the IDF Mobilités app through a pre-loaded shortcut displayed under the Transit menu of Samsung Wallet.

In addition to efficient city navigation, travelers can leave behind ticket queues and unmanned ticket booths. Samsung Galaxy users can simply tap their devices to board or transfer buses, metros and Réseau Express Régional (RER) lines,³ reducing the need for physical cards or tickets and unlocking a hassle-free transport experience.

Unlocking Simplified Travel in France

Even beyond Paris, Samsung Galaxy users can enjoy the simplicity of payment card-based transit across multiple French cities, including Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, Lille and Aix-en-Provence. Plus, the RoissyBus and OrlyBus shuttle provide quick, direct links for travelers between the city center and Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport. With this feature, Samsung Galaxy users can just tap their device to pay and go,⁴ boosting transport speed and accessibility.

For international travel, the Add to Wallet function is now being extended to Air France and partner flights, allowing Samsung Galaxy users to add boarding passes to Samsung Wallet.⁵ What’s more, travelers from abroad can rest assured that international payments and Add to Wallet capabilities will work smoothly when visiting France. Upon arriving at their destination, travelers will be prompted via push notification⁶ to explore these features, ensuring user awareness of all that Samsung Wallet has to offer during their visit to the region — from enhanced sight-seeing and local transport to simplified international travel.

Enhancing Tourism Across Attractions

Samsung Wallet is also enabling the Add to Wallet function for tickets to iconic landmarks and other attractions, making them all conveniently accessible from a Samsung Galaxy device. Visitors can explore all the entertainment France has to offer with ease, from sites like the Palace of Versailles to over 200 cinemas.

To understand our users’ perspectives and needs, we collaborated with advisors with low vision, researchers, engineers, programmers and testers to develop a solution for inclusive visual displays. Relumino Mode is the product of years of research and development to advance Samsung’s goal of providing “Screens for All” and improving the viewing experience for those with limited vision. This new feature is available in the Samsung Galaxy S24 series and beyond.

From following a ball during a sports match to reading smaller text on a news broadcast, Relumino Mode¹ helps users with low vision to connect with the world and enjoy content that matters most to them.

Providing Audio Descriptions With TalkBack

The TalkBack² feature, also known as Voice Assistant, is designed to help users with low or no vision to get the most out of their device experience without looking at their screens. This feature transforms Galaxy smartphones and tablets into an intuitive audio interface. As users navigate their devices, Talkback can provide speech feedback for anything they touch, highlight or select, such as menus, emails and notifications. TalkBack shortcuts can also be enabled for more seamless navigation.

Navigating the screen is simple. With easy-to-use gestures, such as Swipe Left, Double Tap or Use Two Fingers To Scroll, TalkBack provides users the freedom to control their devices conveniently.

Bringing Media to Life With Live Captions

From making a conversation more audible to increasing the noise of traffic at a crosswalk, the Ambient Sound feature allows users to participate in social interactions while being aware of their surroundings.

From Recovering Open Chat Messages to Simplifying the Account Verification Process

Q. Smart Switch can now restore KakaoTalk conversations in their entirety. Please give us details about the new function.

Kang: When transferring data between Galaxy devices through Smart Switch, users can now easily restore their KakaoTalk conversations and related media including photos and videos. The update goes as far as to maintain the unread status of texts. Furthermore, it is now possible to save Open Chat messages — which was previously difficult to enable.

Hwang: Galaxy users will be particularly interested in the support for Open Chat conversation recovery. Due to the flexible nature of the feature, KakaoTalk did not support any backup capabilities for Open Chat in the past. However, we decided to offer restoration support for the first time given the popularity of Open Chat among Android users.

Q. How will this update make the user experience more convenient?

Kang: Previously, users had to restore KakaoTalk data through a manual or paid backup when the app was moved from their old phone to a new one. In addition, the self-verification process created a high barrier to entry for older users and those who are not familiar with the platform. Since both companies have a common goal of improving user convenience — as Samsung wants to create an effortless experience for Galaxy users setting up new devices, and KakaoTalk hopes to optimize the app for more convenient messaging — we worked to alleviate the account verification process.

Hwang: In this new update, KakaoTalk users only have to complete the account verification process once. When the data has been transferred to their new device through Smart Switch, users can enter their KakaoTalk account password to prove the transferred data is theirs. Everything can be simply and securely restored with this single verification step.

User Convenience as a Shared Value

Q. How did this collaboration between Samsung and KakaoTalk come about?

Kang: Users have wanted KakaoTalk data restoration support for some time now, but complex data security and technology policies posed some challenges. However, Samsung and Kakao agreed to develop updates at the end of last year — in a joint effort to improve user convenience.

Hwang: We wanted to launch the service as quickly as possible. During the collaboration, we communicated in real time through messenger and organized our ideas as if we were one team. We carefully discussed what aspects each company would like to support and methodically carried out development to launch the service on our target date. For me, it was a memorable experience as we were able to complete a cross-company collaboration in a short time period.

Q. What was the most important aspect of the development process?

Hwang: Security was crucial. A tight security system is necessary to reassure KakaoTalk users that their data will be protected in the case they lose their phones. Both companies deliberated over the best way to safeguard users and their data. In the end, we streamlined the account verification process and introduced a system that would invalidate data transfers if authentication was not performed within a certain time limit.

Samsung and KakaoTalk: Dedicated to a New User Experience

Q. Since the update, have there been any memorable reactions?

Hwang: We’ve been monitoring the app since the update was released, and seeing the positive reviews and comments makes me proud. Some people are wondering what the next level of restoration will look like — which amuses me and makes me want to leave replies.

Kang: The response to the support for Open Chat restoration has been remarkable, especially since this function was not possible before. We expect to see even more favorable reactions from users as new Galaxy devices are released moving forward.

Q. How do you feel about the collaboration on this feature? What are your future goals?

Hwang: Collaboration between companies with different interests and corporate cultures is rare and doesn’t come easy. I’ll remember this experience for a long time since our partnership was made possible because we both had our users’ best interests in mind.

Kang: This meaningful experience will serve as a guide for other collaborations in the future as we strive to provide better customer experiences. I’d like to hear users say, “I can buy a new Galaxy phone without worrying because Smart Switch will take care of the data transfer for me.” In addition to messenger apps such as KakaoTalk, Samsung is teaming up with apps from various industries to further improve how users transfer data. In 2011, Samsung Electronics first unveiled “Over the Horizon.” Every year since, the song has evolved with a new message. Under the theme “Sound from Nature,” this year’s version combines classical instruments with instruments used in “Gugak,” traditional Korean music. By artfully fusing tradition and modernity, this piece symbolizes a journey toward the future.

Released on January 16, 2024, “Over the Horizon” features the Seoul National University Gugak Orchestra led by music director Won il, who is known for overseeing the music at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. The track was recorded in Dolby Atmos and fine-tuned in collaboration with award-winning sound director Byeong Joon Hwang. “Music made with traditional instruments extends beyond the traditional pentatonic scale. In this version of ‘Over the Horizon,’ we tried to capture the concept of embracing tradition, modernity and the future,” said music director Won il. “As a result, we incorporated various musical expressions, including sevenths and chromatic scales.”

Sound director Byeong Joon Hwang, who won a Grammy Award for music production and recording,¹ emphasized the unique sounds of Gugak in his work on “Over the Horizon.”

“Gugak is a music genre that evokes the beauty of nature, such as the blowing wind and flowing water, so it can sound very unfamiliar and raw to those who haven’t heard it before,” explained Hwang. “Classical music typically uses a lot of reverberation, and to compensate for this, we tried our best to create an optimal sound while recording in a concert hall with plenty of reverberation,” he said.

Players can also check where they rank against competitors on the leaderboard. Furthermore, the S Pen can also be used to capture in-game photos for sharing after completion.

Photos from both games can be shared instantly via Quick Share¹ or downloaded through email. There will also be a FlexCam Selfie Kiosk, where the Galaxy Z Flip5’s FlexCam enables visitors to take hands-free photos from different angles and download them to be framed.

Following the games, participants can retreat to the VIP room, where they can observe ongoing challenges on The Frame’s expansive 85-inch screen. Samsung Electronics today announced a new Medications tracking feature¹ that will be added to the Samsung Health app² to help users manage their health more comprehensively. The new feature will help users easily keep track of both their prescription and over-the-counter medications and provide important, relevant information and tips about these medications. In particular, it can assist those who take medications regularly and those taking supplements for general well-being.

“Samsung Health aims to help people better understand and manage their health through a holistic platform by connecting devices, services and people,” said Hon Pak, Vice President and Head of Digital Health Team, MX Business at Samsung Electronics. “With the addition of the new Medications tracking feature, we believe users will be able to more conveniently manage their medications, improve adherence and ultimately maintain better health overall.”

Upon entering the name of a select medication into Samsung Health, the Medications feature will provide users with detailed information that includes general descriptions as well as possible side effects. Adverse reactions that could occur from drug-to-drug interactions or if taken alongside certain food and substances such as caffeine and alcohol, are also provided. One example of this is, if a user is taking the prescription drug Simvastatin, Samsung Health will warn the user that the drug has been linked to serious side effects when combined with grapefruit juice. Users can even log the shape and color of their medications, allowing them to easily differentiate between the pills they are taking. Dosage, time of consumption and other details can also be added to avoid any potential confusion.

Users can set up alerts that remind them both when to take their medications and when they should consider refilling them. These alerts are fine-tuned to the individual user so the Medications feature is able to prioritize medications depending on their importance, with Samsung Health sending reminders ranging from “gentle” to “strong” depending on how important or urgent a given prescription is. For crucial medications, users can set a “strong” reminder that will display a full screen alert on their smartphone accompanied by a long tone. For supplements like vitamins, a simple pop-up reminder will appear that will not disturb the user. Galaxy Watch users will also receive reminders right on their wrist so they can stay on top of their medication schedules, even when away from their phones.

The Samsung Health app provides a range of advanced health offerings spanning sleep management,³ mindfulness programs and irregular heart rhythm detection⁴ capabilities. With the addition of the Medications tracking feature, Samsung Health delivers a truly holistic wellness experience that helps users maintain healthier lifestyles while keeping on top of their medication regimens.

The Medications tracking feature will first be available on Samsung Health app in the U.S. via the app updates rolling out later this week.

First, navigate to Settings on your Galaxy Watch to find the Accessibility menu. Scroll down to find Universal Gestures within the Interaction and dexterity section. Then, toggle on the Universal Gestures option and learn more about the full potential of this feature with Gestures tutorial.

Once the Universal Gestures feature is enabled, make a fist twice to seamlessly switch from the regular touch-based navigation method.² Your Galaxy Watch will indicate it with a customizable colored outline, allowing you to utilize this intuitive mode for a tailored and accessible experience.

Make Fist To Open Action Menu and Select

Within Universal Gestures, the Make Fist gesture simplifies the process of selecting and opening items on the Galaxy Watch.

Make Fist Twice gesture unveils the Action menu, which is an array of convenient options accessible right from your wrist. Imagine this menu as a toolbox packed with essential tools, such as opening the apps menu, going to the previous screen and displaying recent apps, readily available whenever you need it. The Action menu is also dynamic, adjusting its content based on whichever screen is currently open when the user activates the Action menu. When you are ready to select the item, simply make a fist.

Pinch To Navigate Back and Forth

The Pinch and Double Pinch gestures on the Galaxy Watch offer new touch-free ways for users to interact with their Galaxy Watch, which are especially beneficial for individuals facing mobility limitations. With these two gestures, you can navigate from one item to another or go back to the previous item.

Scroll through your messages, browse your calendar items or peruse your photo album — these are all made possible with the Pinch gesture.

Just two years after the launch of its predecessors, the Galaxy SmartTag2 has returned with a design upgrade and substantial feature enhancements based on user feedback.

Samsung Newsroom sat down with Dalwon Kim and Kiyoung Kwon, Product Planners of the Galaxy SmartTag2 at Samsung Electronics, to discuss key aspects of the product and its improvements.

Rugged Design: IP67-Rated Usability With Metal Loop

Building off valuable user insights gathered during the launch of the Galaxy SmartTag and Galaxy SmartTag+, the Galaxy SmartTag2 was developed with a focus on the user experience to improve comfort and increase satisfaction.

The most noticeable change with the Galaxy SmartTag2 is its design — reducing the product size and thickness resulted in a more portable device. The new metal loop improves functionality and adds an air of sophistication to the product.

“After analyzing thousands of reviews of the previous iterations, we noticed some feedback about minor inconveniences that affect the user experience,” explained product planner Dalwon Kim. “Our goal for this version was to create a design that is smaller, lighter and attachable anywhere. We also wanted to make sure the battery was not easily removable. We took outdoor activities into account and made specific improvements to enhance the product’s durability, such as adding IP67-rated water- and dust-resistant features.”¹

Added Convenience With Compass View and Lost Mode

Improving the features of the all-new Galaxy SmartTag2 began by asking how the company can allow users to make the most out of their Galaxy SmartTags in any environment. By harnessing the global network of Galaxy products, Samsung was able to strengthen Galaxy SmartTag’s versatility and utility through two features — Compass View and Lost Mode.

“The Galaxy SmartTag2 has evolved significantly to make it applicable in a wider variety of scenarios,” said Kim.

The Galaxy SmartTag2 still operates with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, a feature originally adopted for the Galaxy SmartTag+.

Taking a deeper look at what’s new, Compass View is an upgraded feature available on the Galaxy SmartTag2 and takes the Find function to the next level.

When using Compass View on the Galaxy SmartTag that relied solely on BLE, users had to physically move closer to lost items to strengthen the signal. However, the new Galaxy SmartTag2 builds upon the innovations of its predecessors and introduces a more intuitive way² for users to locate their belongings by displaying both the direction of and distance from the misplaced object.

“With the Galaxy SmartTag+, users had to monitor the signal strength to gauge their proximity to items and then tap Find Using Camera before turning the mobile device around,” explained Kim. “Through Compass View on the Galaxy SmartTag2, the direction and distance to the lost item are automatically displayed when you reach a certain distance — an arrow icon appears on the screen, pointing in the direction of the item. It’s as simple as using a compass.”

The Galaxy SmartTag2 also introduces Lost Mode,³ a new feature powered by near-field communication (NFC) technology that will be handy in a variety of situations. If Lost Mode is activated and someone with a NFC-compatible device discovers a lost item, they can scan the Galaxy SmartTag2 — allowing them to access the owner’s contact information and any personalized messages.

Extended Battery Life: Up to 500 Days of Usage

The Galaxy SmartTag2 boasts an impressively long battery life⁴ — offering approximately 500 days of continuous use or more than double that of its predecessors. When the new Power Saving Mode⁵ is activated, the battery life can stretch to 700 days or more than four times that of the previous versions. “Although Galaxy SmartTags are designed to track both locations and lost items, most users primarily utilize them for location tracking. We introduced the Power Saving Mode to cater to this preference,” said Kim.

“One of the most common points raised in user feedback was related to battery life,” said product planner Kiyoung Kwon. “Our primary objective was to extend battery life — ensuring it could span several months or more.”

Compared to the Galaxy SmartTag+, the Galaxy SmartTag2 offers a longer battery life at a more affordable price point. “This achievement was made possible by implementing a new chipset solution and improving software mechanisms,” he emphasized.

Strong Security Features and Unauthorized Tracking Detection

The main goal of the Galaxy SmartTag2 is to assist users in locating their cherished belongings. However, it is crucial to recognize that location-tracking services can be exploited.

To prioritize user safety and privacy, the Galaxy SmartTag2 incorporates robust security features through Samsung Knox. “Galaxy SmartTag2 location data cannot be accessed without the user’s consent, and all user data is encrypted and safeguarded by Samsung Knox. Furthermore, location data is shared only with individuals designated by the user,” explained Kim.

The Galaxy SmartTag2 can also detect unknown Galaxy SmartTags in the vicinity to alleviate concerns about unauthorized tracking. “Unknown tag alerts,” a feature within SmartThings Find,⁶ identifies any unregistered Galaxy SmartTags nearby and sends a notification⁷ to alert the user against unauthorized tracking.

“This feature offers assurance and an added layer of security,” said Kwon. “Regardless of the device, users are provided with transparency to help avoid misuse of the Galaxy SmartTag.”

Why 23% of Users Opt for Multiple Galaxy SmartTags

Users familiar with the Galaxy SmartTag recognize its practicality. For every 100 people who own a Galaxy SmartTag, 23 people own two or more. This number has more than doubled since last year and continues to grow.

The upgraded Galaxy SmartTag2 is expected to be adopted by an even larger user base for a wider range of applications. Kim and Kwon, the minds behind the product, underscore the Galaxy SmartTag2 as a mobile accessory that offers “peace of mind.”

“We’ve improved the product’s features with a strong focus on enabling users to conveniently locate their lost valuables from a distance,” said Kim. “I’ve heard of cases where the Galaxy SmartTag was used to catch thieves and prevent other crimes, which made me very proud as a product planner. We will continue to do our best to create products that users can continuously rely on wherever they go.”

“I hope that the Galaxy SmartTag2 can become an integral part of people’s lives,” said Kwon. “I want the Galaxy SmartTag to be the first solution that crosses people’s minds when they need to find their lost belongings.”

At the heart of this new storytelling approach is a short centerpiece film, starring Emma Myers (known for her role in Netflix’s “Wednesday”) on a journey that transitions through the genres of film noir, science fiction, western, fantasy and action thriller. There are entire online communities full of advice and testimonials, dedicated to safe and responsible sideloading, and to new ways of using Galaxy devices that open up exciting possibilities. For those who fully intend to sideload, they won’t notice any change with One UI 6 because Auto Blocker is off by default. Then, what’s the benefit of opting in?

We constantly look out for new threats, and it is increasingly common to see social engineering attacks like voice phishing. This is when an attacker doesn’t target a device, but targets users and aims for human error. For example, if someone called your mother pretending to be from the bank, and they scam her into installing malware. With Auto Blocker activated, such an attempt would be detected and stopped.

Fortunately, Auto Blocker prevents commands and installations via USB cable, which makes it tough for anyone to physically override your device’s security.

Auto Blocker assures users that they can safely use their favorite apps or try new ones. It turns on app security checks, which look out for potential malware.¹ It also opens up the Message Guard feature, which prevents Zero Click exploits to popular third-party messaging apps, including Messenger, Telegram, KakaoTalk and WhatsApp.

Samsung Electronics today introduced Auto Blocker, a new security tool for Samsung Galaxy users designed to keep their devices protected in the way that best fits their lifestyle.

Recently released on One UI 6 as part of Samsung Galaxy’s expanded arsenal of security and privacy innovations, Auto Blocker is an opt-in package of additional security measures that gives users more choice as they explore the customizations enabled by Samsung Galaxy’s open ecosystem.

Putting the Choice in Users’ Hands

“At Samsung we constantly strive to keep our users safe from security attacks, and with the introduction of Auto Blocker users can continue to enjoy the benefits of our open ecosystem, knowing that their mobile experience is secured,” said Dr. Seungwon Shin, EVP & Head of Security Team, Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics. “We always seek to empower our users to choose for themselves what best suits their needs — rather than us deciding on their behalf, and Auto Blocker is no exception to that.”

One of Auto Blocker’s features is the prevention of app installations from unauthorized sources,¹ known as sideloading. There are many benefits to intentional sideloading, such as enhanced customization and control over a device’s functionality. Those who love to safely sideload will experience no change as the feature is off by default. For those not in the habit of sideloading or extensive customization, activating Auto Blocker can provide additional peace of mind by stalling the rise of social engineering attacks like voice phishing, where attackers could talk users into installing malicious software.

Auto Blocker has a range of additional controls, including turning on app security checks² to help detect potential malware and prevent harmful commands and software installations by USB cable. This can help protect users in a situation where someone has physical access to their device, like when charging a phone at an airport.

With this feature also comes an update to Message Guard, which mitigates Zero Click attacks, or direct image messages hiding malicious code. Initially launched for messaging apps from Google and Samsung, it now can help protect users using popular third party apps.³ This way, users have greater choice over the apps they can safely use.
