Samsung Electronics today announced that it plans to open Samsung Game Portal, an online store specializing in gaming, on Samsung.com in more than 30 countries around the world, starting with the U.S., the U.K., Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Brazil in late June.

The Game Portal is a one-stop online store for gamers designed to significantly increase the convenience of browsing and purchasing products such as smartphones, TVs, gaming monitors and high-performance SSDs. It also provides customers with a variety of gaming-related content in one place, fine-tuned to their preferences and experiences.

In 2021, Accenture, a leading global professional services company, published an illuminating gaming-related study. To connect to the growing Metaverse user base, Samsung Electronics Latin America has released a new map in the popular online video game, Fortnite. The new map, called SmartCity S23 is designed around the characteristics of the Galaxy S product lineup.

As they explore the map and complete various quests in game, players can interact more closely with the Galaxy ecosystem and, more specifically, the Galaxy S23. Players can use the Galaxy S23 in game to zoom in on far away objects in high resolution, allowing them to easily spot hidden Easter eggs in the map, and can also use the Nightography feature to see in the dark. Additionally, for an extra layer of protection, players can toggle the Knox function.

The Samsung Showroom also displays the company’s sustainability efforts, including the use of recycled materials in Galaxy products and sustainable product packaging, giving players the ability to familiarize themselves with both the devices and Samsung’s eco-conscious values.

Igniting Gaming Passions in Southeast Asia and Oceania

In order to continue meeting consumer demands and industry trends, Samsung Electronics Southeast Asia and Oceania (SEAO) recently conducted an in-depth gaming survey in SEAO. The results of the survey, conducted in partnership with ONE Esports, found that seven out of 10 online consumers in the region consider themselves to be gamers.

The survey also found that across SEAO, the main reason people play video games is in order to relieve stress and to relax, with respondents gaming an average of seven hours a week.

Through the new server, the care of the new planet was promoted by recycling polluting matter. Meeting, Greeting and Gaming With Galaxy Fans in Brazil

Galaxy users in Brazil were able to experience the latest Galaxy products firsthand at the Galaxy Experience in São Paulo city.

Visitors to the space in Brazil were treated to a gaming competition with Flakes Power(@FlakesPower), a popular Brazilian gaming streamer and a member of #TeamGalaxy, a diverse team of content creators. Many attendees flocked to watch the competition, with a queue forming hours before the event opened. The competition was filled with exciting action and gameplay, with the fastest participant in the competition awarded with a new Galaxy S23 Ultra 5G.

In addition to experiencing the latest Galaxy S23 5G lineup, visitors were encouraged to test out pairing the Galaxy S23 to other Galaxy devices, such as the Galaxy Watch5 or Galaxy Buds2 Pro, creating a seamlessly connected device experience.

Samsung Electronics unveiled its new CJG5 curved gaming monitor at Gamescom 2018, held from August 21 to 25. Samsung is exhibiting its advanced gaming monitor line-up equipped with super ultra-wide CHG90 experience zone under the theme, “Wider View. Winning Play.” Held in Cologne, Germany, Gamescom is one of the world’s largest gaming trade shows that attracted more than 350 thousand visitors from more than 50 countries, last year alone.

The newly-developed CJG5 32-inch(C32JG5) and 27-inch(C27JG5) monitors feature key gaming technologies such as WQHD high resolution, curved display, 144Hz refresh rate and a high contrast ratio. Globally available in the third quarter of 2018, the bezel-less, game-optimized CJG5 provides a completely smooth and immersive gaming experience at a reasonable and affordable price backed by Samsung’s technology expertise.

Once a year, E3 – one of the world’s largest electronics and gaming conferences – brings the video gaming industry’s most innovative creators to Los Angeles to showcase the latest technology and products.

Samsung joins the excitement every year and this year, kicked off the QLED TV Gaming Experience on a tricked-out semi-truck, now on tour in the U.S.

At the 2018 Electronic Entertainment Expo (‘E3’) in LA this June, Samsung QLED TVs were exhibited as part of Microsoft’s Xbox booth. The 75-inch QLED TV screens caught the attention of keen gamers, with a long queue forming in order to enter the showroom. Players enjoyed an unparalleled 4K HDR gaming experience, featuring stunning graphics and quick response times, with the QLED.

Samsung’s 2018 QLED TVs have evolved to merit the title of the ‘monster’ of the gaming industry. They offer gamers a low input lag of no more than 15ms (0.015 seconds), a rich viewing experience achieved by 100% color volume and High Dynamic Range (HDR) 2000, and Radeon FreeSync for the seamless playing of even the most demanding games.

Fighting Input Lag in FPS Games

Input lag can be a critical issue for those players who want to enjoy fast-paced games like first-person shooters (FPS) or fighting games. Input lag, or input latency, is the delay between the TV or monitor receiving a signal and it being displayed on the screen, or the delay between pressing a controller button and seeing the game react. It is important in gaming because even a 0.01 second reaction difference can determine the difference between a winning and losing move in an FPS game.

Samsung’s QLED TVs have input lag reduced to 15ms (1ms = 0.001 seconds), faster than conventional TVs which have a 20-30ms lag on average. Gamers can fully immerse themselves in games on their QLED TVs with minimal lag. QLED TV’s Auto Game Mode also changes features including response speed for game optimization. When users start a game on a console such as Xbox, the TV automatically recognizes the game and sets the correct game-related settings.

Optimized Picture Quality for Immersive Gaming

Today’s games are characterized by feature film-quality storylines, cinematography and graphics. Game characters and avatars are becoming more and more lifelike, as are the landscapes around them, often offered in full 360-degree rotation to the player for the most immersive experience possible.

In order to deliver this virtual realism to gamers, game platforms feature the latest in color, contrast and imaging technology, as well as 144Hz refresh rates for high frame-rate gaming. Samsung’s 2018 QLED TVs are the first in the TV industry to use Radeon FreeSync in collaboration with global graphics card maker AMD. TV screens suffer from performance decline over time, with static images and fixed interfaces leading to image retention and consequently the burn-in issue. With Samsung QLED TVs, however, you no longer need to worry about burn-in.

Rtings, an industry-trusted US TV Reviewer, ran a test for permanent image retention. Different kinds of TVs were kept on for 10 minutes, running a test pattern in a loop. The 2017 QLED TV scored 10/10 for image quality and lack of burn-in, while some screens achieved a mere 5/10.

Instead of connecting Steam Link hardware to the TV, this technology enables users to stream their favorite games from their in-home PC directly to their Samsung Smart TVs via an app in the Samsung Smart Hub. If users connect the in-home PC and TV and run a Steam Link game service on their PC, they can play the game on their Samsung Smart TV screen via the Steam Link app.

Part 1: eSports Pros Discuss the Odyssey’s Winning Performance

Boasting powerful performance capabilities, gaming desktops have long been preferred to laptops by professional gamers. But thanks to the Samsung Notebook Odyssey, that may no longer be the case. Injae Kim and Jaehong Ryu of the professional eSports team Lunatic-hai explain why.

Q. You recently had the chance to test out the Samsung Notebook Odyssey. What were your first impressions?

Injae Kim: For me, the simple but powerful design really stuck out. While both color options are impressive, I especially liked the white model, which is rather unique for a gaming laptop. A good design can catch the attention of the public, which is something gamers have to consider.

Jehong Yu: The first thing I noticed was the size. I expected it to be small, but it turned out to be just the right size for playing.

Q. How did using the Samsung Notebook Odyssey compare to using a gaming desktop?

Injae Kim: Before using the Odyssey, I wondered if it would really stack up to a desktop in terms of performance but I ended up being very impressed. Thanks to the computer’s NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card, the images on the screen transitioned smoothly without lag, just as they do on a desktop. The colors were vibrant and the visuals extremely clear.

Jehong Yu: When I’m playing a game, I’m very sensitive to my surroundings. My performance can easily be affected if something is off. But with the Odyssey’s life-like color contrast, wide-view angle display and anti-glare screen, I didn’t notice any differences. I felt as if I were playing on a desktop like I usually do.

Q. What sets the Odyssey apart from other gaming PCs?

Jehong Yu: The ventilation system. Even after using the laptop continuously for long periods of time, the Odyssey didn’t get overheated, so its performance didn’t drop off. I once left the Odyssey on my bed, and the bedspread stayed cool.

Injae Kim: The curved keycaps feel very comfortable, and it doesn’t take long to get used to using them. Also, the WASD keys, which are the most frequently used keys in most games, are backlit, making them easier to find, even when playing in the dark.

Q. Of all the Odyssey’s features, which are your favorite?

Injae Kim: In addition to the laptop’s performance and portability, I find the keyboard shortcuts to be very useful. For example, I simply need to press two keys to access the System Status Dashboard, which lets me quickly check the frame rate and hard drive space. I can also record my gameplay without having to download additional programs, like most other computers require you to do.

Jehong Yu: The computer’s Beast Mode, which can easily be switched on with the press of a hot key, optimizes game performance by making the computer faster and the picture smoother. I kept Beast Mode on the entire time I used the Odyssey.

Part 2: Odyssey Designers Showcase a Design That’s Ahead of the Game

The design of the Samsung Notebook Odyssey is truly one of a kind. So much so that it was awarded the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017, an accolade that appraises the best design products of the year. Jusuek Lee from Samsung Design Europe discusses the concept and the inspiration behind the aesthetics.

Q. What inspired the name of the computer?

Jusuek Lee: We wanted to design a device that could take gamers on an exciting adventure. Therefore, we named the laptop ‘Odyssey.’

Q. Tell us a little bit about the concept of the design.

Jusuek Lee: The Odyssey was inspired by the strength of the fabled dragon, which is evident in the details of the device’s unique design. The front logo, for example, resembles the eyes of the mythical creature. And, like the scales on a dragon’s skin, the laptop’s HexaFlow Vent located on its bottom panel enables optimal performance for even the longest gaming sessions. It also ensures that the device stays continuously cool.

Q. The hexagon shape is prevalent in the design of the Odyssey. What’s the story behind this?

Jusuek Lee: Of all shapes, the hexagon has the most stable and solid structure. Take a honeycomb, for example. Each hexagonal wax cell of the structure utilizes a limited amount of space while being able to support and balance a great amount of weight.

Likewise, the hexagonal ventilated bottom supports the laptop very well, while simultaneously cooling the device. If you look closely, you can see that each hexagon of the vent is skewed at a slightly different angle, and all are drawn from a singular point. This task alone took longer than any other part of the design process, as one small error would have spoiled the entire design.

Our design team also incorporated the same tilted hexagon shape into the laptop’s front logo and trackpad, thus unifying the entire design of the device.

Q. Why did you choose the colors?

Jusuek Lee: Most gaming PCs look so serious and dull. We wanted to create a completely new design that could appeal to all users. So, in addition to black, we also selected white for the body, a color that is both gender-neutral, innovative and unique to the product category.

For the accents, such as the keyboard backlight, we chose red, a straightforward hue symbolic of energy and enthusiasm, including the passion our users have for gaming.

Available in 17.3-inch and 15.6-inch models, and featuring refinements in design, cutting-edge technology and enhanced gaming usability, the Samsung Notebook Odyssey is no ordinary computer. From its eye-catching aesthetics and optimized keyboard to its advanced display and high-power performance, the device takes gaming experiences to entirely new heights.

A Design That Raises the Game

Backlit WASD keys on the 15.6-inch model stand out in a dynamic red hue, providing users with optimal interaction. With the 17.3-inch model, users can also choose the backlight color of individual keycaps to make locating their most frequently used keys more intuitive.

Q. The type of LCD panel used in a gaming monitor is key in determining how it displays. How did you select the right one for the CFG70?

Hoseong Seo: Gaming monitors feature different types of LCD panels, namely Twisted Nematic (TN), Vertical Alignment (VA), and In-Plane Switching (IPS) or Plane to Line Switching (PLS). But to meet our requirements for image quality and response time, there was really only one answer.

The CFG70 features a VA panel, which provides a high contrast range, rich color and a wide viewing angle. We chose a VA not only because they’re the optimal panels for curved monitors, which are scientifically proven to be more visually comfortable, but also because it integrated perfectly with our Quantum dot technology, allowing us to deliver supreme image quality.

Most VA panels feature an MPRT (Moving Picture Response Time – the standard for measuring the “motion blur” of rapidly moving objects in a sequence of images) of between 4 and 6 milliseconds. The CFG70’s, however, is just 1ms.

Q. What steps did you take to achieve that 1-millisecond mark?

Hoseong Seo: The difference is in the CFG70’s impulsive scanning technology. With older, CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors, when a scene changes, the screen will very quickly turn off and back on. The human eye compensates for the gap, and the user sees seamless visuals without motion blur. LCD monitors, on the other hand, do not turn off when a scene changes, which makes them susceptible to motion-blur issues.

Impulsive scanning technology reduces motion blur by regulating a monitor’s backlight between each scene. The conventional method to address this issue is to control the backlight from the center of the screen, but this may allow motion blur to remain in the upper and lower areas.

The CFG70’s backlights are divided into four sections that synchronize with image frames to eliminate motion blur across its screen.

The CFG70 features advanced “four-channel” impulsive scanning technology, which is more precise. It creates a cleaner visual experience by dividing the screen into four sections to remove motion blur more efficiently, and Samsung was the first to apply it to create a 1ms monitor.

Q. How did you anticipate gamers would respond to the CFG70’s advanced technology?

Hyang Go: Well, while it’s true that gamers greatly value innovation in their visual displays, not all will ultimately choose to buy the products with the most advanced technologies. One reason for this is simply because not everyone sees the difference.

We believe that the CFG70 curved gaming monitor’s strengths are very clear, however, and we wanted to give gamers an opportunity to see for themselves. So we invited some gamers to participate in a blind test comparing the visuals produced by its 1ms response time and impulsive scanning technology with those of competing gaming monitors.

In EA’s Need for Speed: No Limits, Nexon’s Heroes of Incredible Tales (HIT), and Super Evil Megacorp’s Vainglory, each game is noticeably more detailed and responsive, so gamers can enjoy them all at a deeper level.

OpenGL has been an important standard in the industry for more than 25 years. But changes in technology—in particular the rising power of GPUs—have created the need for a new API with more flexibility and portability, which led to the release of Vulkan 1.0 in February. With simpler drivers, Vulkan reduces CPU bottlenecks, allows the use of multiple CPUs for increased performance, and reduces hitches and other surprises.

Compared to OpenGL ES, the Vulkan API increases GPU performance while lowering CPU load. The result is more detailed graphics and more responsive gaming, making games more immersive and engaging for users.

In order to making gaming on the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge as exciting and engaging as possible, Samsung has worked actively with its partners, helping them understand the smartphones and Vulkan API.

“Samsung has been a great partner for us in importing our games to Vulkan,” said Tommy Krul, Chief Technology Officer at Super Evil Megacorp. “We actually had engineers from Samsung right here in our office helping us port Vainglory to Vulkan and really squeeze out all the performance we can.”

Together with Samsung and the Vulkan API, Super Evil Megacorp was able to create games with 30 percent faster performance, increased rendering of images on the screen and improved battery life.

“Microsecond fidelity on our devices is essential, because we need players to be able to perform at their max capacity,” said Stephan Sherman, Chief Creative Officer at Super Evil Megacorp. “It’s essential that they have a device that is going to be able to keep up with them. Vulkan and Samsung devices are built for performance. They’re built for lightning fast, blinding speed, that perfect alacrity between touch and action.”

And to take that relationship to the next level, this year Super Evil Megacorp teamed up with Samsung at the E3 to present the Samsung Galaxy Vainglory Invitational tournament Four of the best competitive Vainglory teams from around the world competed in front of a live audience in the 2-day competition. The matches between Team Solomid from USA, G2 esports from Germany, Hunters from China and Invincible Armada from Korea were very intense. In the end, Invincible Armada took home the victory, with Team Solomid coming in at second place.

If anything, the EA Play demo stations piqued gamers’ curiosity – most in attendance said they would like to sample other titles in this format, and learn more about how the curved format can improve their gameplay.

In certain cases, the curved displays became a “must-have” at EA Play. A special QR code promotion attached to each demo monitor directed participants to a product page while simultaneously offering a sales discount. Monday’s crowd alone saw several attendees take advantage of the promotion, transforming their future gaming experience on the spot.

What Gamers Want

Show floor conversations indicated that gamers seem aligned on the components of the ideal gaming experience – continuity, realism, visual depth and a presentation they can stay focused on long-term. Overall, attendees found that Samsung’s curved gaming monitors not only met, but exceeded their expectations along these criteria.

Gamers cited the CF591 monitor’s lack of glare as a clear advantage. Samsung will demo the company’s latest technologies to provide off-the-charts experiences for thrill-seeking gamers. The technology on display includes:

Cross-functional Team of Experts

Recognizing the growth of the mobile gaming industry and increasing influence of millennial mobile users, Samsung launched a Task Force Team (TFT) dedicated to gaming in 2015.

“Our task force team was not formed under the decision by management,” said Principle Engineer Dong Kyung Kim. “People who really love games came together voluntarily.”

The team was comprised of experts from different groups across Samsung – from Technology Strategy and Service Product Management to Graphic R&D and UX to Product Planning and Marketing. Together, the team members used their different expertise to create synergies and solve various challenges throughout the development process. As a result, they bolstered the new Galaxy S7 and S7 edge with specialized features for mobile games – demonstrating the company-wide move toward providing a more convenient and comfortable gaming experience for users.

Subtle Features That Make a Huge Difference

The more notable gaming features of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are the Game Launcher and Game Tools. While the Game Launcher allows you to be immersed in the game by showing every mobile game related feature in one screen, the Game Tools increases concentration by offering on-screen buttons for game-related functions.
These two apps are pre-loaded on the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge but not activated automatically. Since these features are not essential for non-gamers, interested users need to activate them in ‘Settings > Useful features > Game’.

The ‘Do not disturb’ feature of the Game Launcher is receiving positive response from avid gamers. When it is activated, the phone blocks notifications and calls and disables some basic buttons.

“Locking the back button during a game may seem insignificant for non-gamers, but for gamers it’s a massive change,” said Senior Designer Joon Won Park. “Every gamer has probably experienced a loss in game progress from an unintentional touch of the back button.”

The team also added a live-stream feature that records games and provides live-streams using the Game Tools, without the help of a separate app.

“The number of people who watch live stream of the final game for ‘League of Legend’ is more than the number of people who watch the final game of American professional baseball,” said Senior Manager Taehoon Kim. “Millennials who record games as they play are likely to live-stream the game as well. The boundaries within the gaming experience keep expanding.”

Samsung offers a Galaxy Game Pack to Galaxy S7 and S7 edge users through the Samsung Galaxy App Store. Packed with more than 40 of the world’s favorite games, its monetary value is more than $200.

“We created the Galaxy Game Pack because we wanted a way to let more Galaxy users know about the Galaxy S7’s gaming features,” said Manager Junsik Kim. Offering the games to users was a first step for the developers in getting user feedback and finding out their satisfaction levels with the gaming features.

Creating a Mobile Gaming Ecosystem

Beyond the improvement of graphics and the addition of enhanced gaming features on the new Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, the developer team aim to build a mobile game ecosystem. To achieve this goal, the team recognizes the need for collaboration with other companies and game developers, and demonstrated its efforts at the Game Developers Conference 2016 (GDC), the largest game developer conference.

“When I was at the GDC conference, I felt that people were wondering why Samsung was here,” said Principle Engineer Jung Woo Kim. “Once they understood our vision and saw our efforts, they understood Samsung’s commitment to enhancing the gaming experience.”

The company upgraded the smartphone’s graphics module in order to run high-spec games on it. That’s how the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are equipped with the next-generation graphic API, Vulkan. Cooperation with other companies was also vital during this process.

“Although we have the capability in-house to develop the product and service based on the new API, we could more effectively work together with others under the same goal,” said Principle Engineer Ted Choi.

Vulkan is the first graphics tool that supports desktop, console and mobile devices with a single API. It significantly reduces CP workload, which helps to reduce power consumption while still creating great graphical effects. Vulkan also has the potential to unify and expand the game eco system across various platforms and will contribute to the accelerated adoption of open standards.

As expected, many gamers found interest with the Vulkan games. “We will try our best to release as many Vulkan games as we can within 2016,” Jung Woo Kim said.

One part of CES 2016 gets visitors really excited—gaming devices. And Samsung’s three-monitor ultra-wide setup for the EA game Battlefield 4 has gotten a particularly enthusiastic response. Not only are there three monitors connected in a row to expand the horizontal field of view, but Samsung devised this setup using its new 27-inch, 1800R curvature monitors, creating an arcing, smooth viewing surface, for the most immersive viewing experience yet.

For gamers, getting immersed into the action is the whole point of the fun. So it is essential to have a monitor that can keep up with the intense demands of today’s games, without lagging or stuttering, and completely absorb players. Samsung’s new curved monitors—the CF591, CF391, CF390 and CF 398—curve with a radius of 1.8 meters, the tightest curvature in the market. “Sitting here, the edge of the screen is looking at you, instead of you having to look at it,” said one rep from an American gaming company, as he played EA’s Need for Speed on a 31.5-inch curved monitor. At the next monitor, another visitor was getting into EA’s NBA Live 16.

In addition to that curvature technology, each of Samsung’s gaming monitors helps prevent eye strain and fatigue with embedded flicker-free and Eye Saver technologies. The monitors are also supported by AMD FreeSync Technology Over HDMI^®, which synchronizes the screen refresh rate with users’ AMD graphics card frame rate, to reduce input latency, stutter and lag during gaming.

Together, these technologies impressed the visitors who streamed through the Samsung exhibition over the course of CES, with many calling Samsung’s 1800R monitors the most natural-feeling and immersive on the market for gaming.

Samsung also set up a special gaming room where visitors could play the games on the new 1800R monitors.

As part of a unique interactive showcase, Samsung transformed some of its CES booths (11906, 11929 and 12429 in the LVCC Central Hall) into the Ultimate Gaming Room, highlighting the enhanced immersion and comfort of its new gaming monitors, featuring games from Electronic Arts Inc. Visitors to the Ultimate Gaming Room can play three of EA’s videogame titles, NBA LIVE 16, Battlefield 4 and Need for Speed, on Samsung’s entertainment-focused monitors. The opening of the Ultimate Gaming Room coincided with the unveiling at CES of Samsung’s first curved gaming monitors (CF591, CF391, CF390 and CF398.) These 1800R curvature monitors are designed to match the natural shape of the human eye, offering wide viewing angles while reducing strain on players’ eyes, even during extended use. Samsung’s curved gaming monitors further prevent eye fatigue through embedded flicker-free and Eye Saver technologies, which maintain a consistent visual presentation. Players also benefit from reduced input latency, stutter and lag, through the monitors’ AMD FreeSync Technology Over HDMI®.

Samsung’s Ultimate Gaming Room also allows visitors to view EA games on several of its other pioneering gaming monitors. The UE850 and UE590 UHD gaming displays combine the core eye-preserving visual benefits with on-screen rapid motion clarity and a fast 1ms response time. For added convenience, Samsung’s SE370 monitor enables players to charge their mobile devices through a compatible wireless pad as they play.
