Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced digital component solutions, today introduced the LM301B EVO, a new mid-power LED package that has been designed to set the pace in light efficacy and color quality for indoor and industrial applications.

Global regulations and standards for lighting, once centered on light efficacy, are becoming more comprehensive to include strict criteria for energy efficiency and color quality. The European Union’s energy labels for light sources (Energy-related Products Directive; ErP) have been revised to become more stringent, and the Design Lights Consortium (DLC) — a non-profit organization for lighting standards in the U.S. and Canada — has added an index for color quality while requiring the same high efficacy level.

The LM301B EVO helps to meet the rigorous lighting standards on both energy efficiency and color quality. Built upon Samsung’s proprietary flip-chip design, the LED package features the industry’s highest efficacy of 235 lumens per watt (lm/W), by applying a new reflective material inside the packaging mold and improving phosphor conversion efficiency. Samsung also fine-tuned the red spectrum in the LED’s phosphor mix to enable superior color quality, especially with the red hues which are usually more difficult to render accurately.

“Our new LM301B EVO offers an unrivaled mix of light efficacy and color rendering that aligns nicely with the changing landscape of LED lighting standards,” said Un Soo Kim, senior vice president of the LED Business Team at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung will continue to provide value-added LED light sources through technological innovation, as we push hard to exceed energy standards across the globe.”

When using the package, luminaire manufacturers can create lamps that qualify for the ErP Directive’s Grade A certification and meet the DLC’s latest V5.1 Premium requirements while achieving industry-leading efficacy.

Based on the industry-standard 3030 platform, the LM301B EVO can be easily integrated into existing and newly designed fixtures for general and premium luminaires.

The LM301B EVO is now in production and available in color temperatures ranging from 2,700K to 6,500K. To facilitate adoption into existing markets, the package will also be available in two lighting modules — the Q-series EVO optimized for indoor lighting at offices and schools, and the H inFlux EVO for high–ceiling applications including factories and warehouses.

As awareness of environmental issues grows, the impacts of the agricultural industry and our own personal food consumption are of increasing public concern. The use of pesticides, herbicides and other resources are falling out of favor and more efficient methods of food production are being explored as we strive to cultivate healthier food. Samsung Electronics is contributing to these efforts, developing technologies that can reduce the environmental impact of growing healthy food.

Horticulture LED Driving the Future of Farming

On the industrial scale, indoor farms are increasing in popularity, since they are better equipped to overcome spatial constraints and extreme climates. In such indoor farms, artificial light plays a crucial role in efficiently managing the rate of plant growth.

Drawing upon its LED technologies developed for other lighting markets, Samsung launched its Horticulture LED lineup in May of last year to provide advanced lighting solutions to indoor farms. LED lighting is more efficient and has a longer lifespan than previously existing artificial lighting solutions. It is also easy to control the light spectrum of LED lighting and LED solutions are becoming a more attractive option for indoor farms.

Samsung’s Horticulture LED Package and module

Different wavelengths of light can affect plants in different ways. For example, wavelengths of 430 to 700 nanometers are required for photosynthesis, a wavelength of 450 nanometers promotes germination, 660 nanometers stimulates growth, and 730 nanometers or more helps plants to bloom and produce fruits. It’s thanks to these properties that red wavelengths (about 600~750 nanometers) and blue wavelengths (about 400~450 nanometers) have been the prevailing trend in indoor farms.

Recent developments have also emphasized the importance of green light with a wavelength of 550 nanometers, with findings that it can penetrate the lower canopy and thus increase the photosynthesis in plants found there. Since this was observed, interaction with a blue wavelength is now actively being studied also.

Based on this research, Samsung released its White LED package last November, with an extensive spectral range, including growth-boosting blue and red wavelengths. Full-spectrum LED lights can increase the nutritional value of plants and deter disease and pests. The bright white light can also create a more pleasant work environment than narrow spectrum alternatives, allowing farmers to monitor growth and inspect for disease with relative ease.

The package is designed to deliver strong reliability, even alongside the use of chemical fertilizers or under hot and humid conditions. The package is also competitive in price when compared to red LED products, helping to reduce the cost of establishing lighting systems in indoor farms.

Samsung raised the photon efficacy level of white LED packages to the highest in the industry, thus reconfirming the company’s leadership in this field. As a result, lighting manufacturers can use 30 percent fewer packages in each luminaire to achieve the same efficacy level as other lighting equipment, ultimately reducing the costs for indoor farms.

Packages can be selected according to the types of plants and the facility’s requirements. Samsung Electronics offers five white LED packages and one white LED module. The company has also designed one blue package and two red packages with a single wavelength.

As Will Chung, a researcher in the company’s Lighting Marketing Group (LED), explained, “Although it’s been less than two years since Samsung Electronics started its horticulture LED business, we’ve already received lots of positive feedback from the market for developing high-quality LED technologies. We’re committed to developing more innovative products that support convenient food production, and will continue to enhance our offerings with testing, studies, and experts’ advice.”

Grow Your Own

In the homes of the future, it will be possible to grow your own vegetables no matter the climate. Samsung recently showcased Chef Garden at KBIS 2019, an AI farming platform that integrates with the next generation of Family Hub. The smart indoor garden uses seed capsules, allowing people to grow small fruits, vegetables and herbs with only a small part of the plant. Chef Garden controls light, temperature and humidity to optimize plant growth. The system also utilizes fogponics technology, which creates a nutrient fog that delivers water and nutrients directly to the plants so that they can grow without the need for pesticides. With water kept to the minimum required, the inside of Chef Garden always remains clean. Chef Garden can also inform users when plants are ready to harvest and recommend recipes thanks to smart integration with Family Hub.

Fruitful Investments and Research

Samsung is supporting research and development in fields such as basic sciences, materials science and ICT through the Samsung Science and Technology Foundation. Samsung has funded 500 project grants for the Korean scientific community to explore since 2013, amongst which are technology research projects examining vertical farming and the acceleration of plant growth. In addition, it is expected that further discoveries garnered from ICT projects involving AI, IoT and LEDs will foster synergy between Samsung’s technology and industrial farming’s efforts to produce healthy food.

“One of the main objectives of this support project is to consider how technology might solve the environmental and food shortage problems society faces today,” said Doochan Daniel Eum, Head of the Samsung Research & Incubation Center for Future Technology. “It’s our intention to contribute a total of 1.5 trillion Korean Won (approximately 1.3 billion USD) by 2023, investing in technologies that can effect real change for future society.”

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced digital component solutions, today announced that it has achieved the industry’s highest light efficacies for its fillet-enhanced chip-scale package (FEC) LED lineup – LM101B, LH181B and LH231B.

Initially chip-scale package (CSP) LEDs had not been widely used in mainstream LED lighting markets due to relatively lower efficacy levels compared to conventional LED packages. However, the newly upgraded, efficacy-leading FECs can be applied to most mainstream LED lighting environments, including ambient, downlight, spotlight, high bay, canopy and street lighting applications.

“Since introducing CSP technology to the industry in 2014, we have put extensive effort into advancing the performance levels and design flexibility of every one of our CSP LEDs,” said Yoonjoon Choi, Vice President of the LED Business Team at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung will continue to bolster its competitive edge in CSP technology, enabling the widest variety of luminaire designs with exceptional performance, reliability and cost benefits for lighting manufacturers worldwide.”

The enhanced FEC LEDs are based on Samsung’s most up-to-date CSP technology which builds TiO2 (Titanium dioxide) walls around the side surfaces of the chip to direct light output upwards. The technology provides considerably higher light efficacy than conventional CSP LEDs while offering greater flexibility for luminaire designers. Moreover, dramatically reduced cross-talk between neighboring packages allows each package to be placed in close proximity to one another.

Building on these advancements, the revamped FEC LED packages achieve the industry’s highest light efficacy levels, to suit an even wider range of lighting applications. The mid-power CSP, LM101B, features an increased efficacy of 205 lm/W (65mA, CRI 80+, 5000K), which is the highest among 1W-class, mid-power CSP LEDs. The 3W-class LH181B provides the highest light efficacy in its class with 190lm/W (350mA, CRI 70+, 5000K) which represents a more than 10-percent enhancement over the previous version. The 5W-class LH231B package continues to offer 170lm/W (700mA, CRI 70+, 5000K), the industry’s highest efficacy for the 5W class.

With Samsung FEC’s small form factor and reduced cross-talk, the LM101B is particularly well suited for spotlighting applications where packages can be densely placed within a small light-emitting surface area. Samsung also made the LM101B much simpler to mount compared to other mid-power CSP LEDs, by modifying the electrode pad.

In addition, the LH181B operates at a maximum current of 1.4A (Amps), making it an ideal component for high-power LED luminaires requiring superior lumen density.

The Samsung FEC lineup, now in mass production, is available in a full range of color temperature (CCT) and color rendering index (CRI) options. Samsung will be showcasing its complete lineup at Light + Building 2018 in Frankfurt, Germany, March 18-23. Please visit Booth B04, Hall 6.2 to learn more about these state-of-the-art LED component solutions and dozens more.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced component solutions, today announced that it has begun mass producing a new mid-power LED package, the LM301B, which features the industry’s highest luminous efficacy of 220 lumens per watt. The package is well suited for a range of LED lighting applications including ambient lighting, downlights and most retrofit lamps.

Samsung was able to achieve its industry-leading efficacy (@ 65mA, 5000K, CRI 80+) by incorporating an advanced flip-chip package design and state-of-the-art phosphor technology. The LM301B’s flip-chip design uses a highly reflective layer-formation technology to enhance light efficacy at the chip level. Also, a complete separation between its red phosphor film and green phosphors allows minimal interference during the phosphor conversion process, resulting in higher efficacy than conventional phosphor structures. These combined technology enhancements enable a 10-percent increase in overall efficacy compared to competing 3030 platform packages, without compromising on premium-quality light output.

“With our LM301B, we are able to deliver even greater mid-power value and help lower the total cost of ownership for LED lighting manufacturers,” said Jacob Tarn, Executive Vice President of LED Business Team at Samsung Electronics. “Thanks to advancements like the LM301B, Samsung will continue to drive innovation in next-generation LED technologies.”

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced component solutions, today announced “H-series Gen 3,” a new line-up of LED linear modules that features high efficacy and enables easy replacement of fluorescent lights with LED lamps.

“With our new H-series, Samsung continues to lead the high-end industry segment for LED components through constant technology innovation,” said Jacob Tarn, executive vice president, LED Business Team, Samsung Electronics. “We are directing our technology expertise to improving the quality of LED lighting by significantly enhancing our LED components’ performance and overall competitiveness.

Samsung’s H-series Gen 3 provides light efficacy reaching up to 187 lumen per watt (lm/W) at 4000K, which allows LED luminaires using the modules to achieve light efficacy above 140lm/W, delivering an optic efficiency level of about 86 percent and LED driver efficiency of approximately 88 percent.

Currently, Samsung offers several linear LED module line-ups: the V-series for cost-effective applications; the M-, S- and F-series for standard LED lighting segments; and now the H-series for high-performance LED products.

Samsung’s H-series Gen 3 uses the LM561C, the mid-power LED package with the highest efficacy in its LM561-series line-up. As a result, the H-series Gen 3 has obtained 18 to 26 percent higher efficacy than the company’s M-series Gen 2 modules. This feature makes the H-series Gen 3 line-up well-suited to meet DLC Premium standards – technical requirements for LED lighting solutions suggested by DesignLights Consortium. DLC standards are well recognized in the North American region as a preferred means of evaluating LED lighting products in terms of performance and quality.

The H-series comes in three sizes: 1120mm (4 ft.) 560mm (2 ft.) and 280mm/275mm (1 ft.). As the premium version of the company’s M-series and S-series line-ups, the H-series has the same form factors as those modules (see chart below), while providing a performance level that more than satisfies the high demands of the U.S. and EU luminaire markets.

Samsung’s M-series has been certified by UL, a product quality certification standards organization in the U.S., while the S-series has been certified by CE and ENEC, similar standards bodies in the EU. Sharing the form factors and quality certifications of Samsung’s M- and S-series, the H-series allows lighting manufacturers to select their LED modules according to the specific operating conditions of their applications.

The full line-up of Samsung’s H-series includes:

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced component solutions, today announced that its test lab for LED packages and modules has been qualified by UL (Underwriters Laboratories), a widely-recognized global safety science organization, to operate the UL Total Certification Program (TCP), one of the highest levels of testing and qualification under the UL Data Acceptance Program (DAP).

UL’s standards and certification are universally recognized as important indicators of product safety and reliability. To better handle increasing requests for testing and certification, UL has been running DAP, which allows approved manufacturers to test products using their own labs, equipment and engineers, and then submit the test data to UL for review. Samsung’s test lab for LED packages and modules is now recognized for the UL TCP. Within UL-specified parameters, Samsung can manage the full TCP process from examining a product’s structure, to selecting and conducting appropriate UL testing, and obtaining UL certification.

As a UL-approved TCP lab, beginning from May 2016, Samsung will be performing tests to measure the safety of its LED components under varying environmental settings including electrical, temperature and humidity variation.

“Being selected to operate under UL’s Total Certification Program underscores the excellence of Samsung’s LED product quality and the thoroughness of our verification processes,” said SungKwan Lim, vice president of the LED Quality team, Samsung Electronics. “By fully embracing the UL TCP, we will be able to speed up the UL testing and certification process for our LED products and strengthen the foundation for our LED business around the world.”

“We are confident that UL TCP will support Samsung’s LED business with more flexibility for timely UL certifications,” said Todd Denison, vice president and general manager of UL’s Appliances, HVAC and Lighting division. “UL will continue to work closely with manufacturers to support improvements in the overall safety of LED components.”

By managing its own UL-approved test lab, Samsung can reduce the testing period for its LED components by about 50-75 percent, which will contribute to Samsung’s ability to rapidly supply UL-certified LED components to customers.

As a part of the criteria for its TCP qualification, Samsung satisfied quality management system requirements, stipulated by ISO 17025. The ISO 17025 standard is used by testing and calibration laboratories for accreditation that allows them to be widely recognized as technically competent. To maintain its top-notch product examination system, Samsung will maintain a close relationship with UL through a variety of testing validation processes including regular assessment of the Samsung LED test lab as required by the TCP program.

To further underscore its testing proficiency, a few years ago Samsung’s LED test lab was qualified as an international test lab from the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS), a governmental accreditation organization that evaluates quality and technical capabilities of testing and inspection laboratories. The Samsung lab also has been recognized by the VDE Institute, the testing and certification branch of VDE Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies, one of the largest technical and scientific associations in Europe. Through its conducting of world-renowned test lab processes and procedures, Samsung will continue to enhance the quality of its LED products, while further demonstrating its competence in meeting challenging customer needs.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced components, has collaborated with artist Il Hoon Roh, to create design art using Samsung’s LED lighting modules.

One outstanding example of this collaborative artwork, the “Saepio”, successfully portrays cold semiconductor-based LED light sources in the form of a chandelier that is lit by curved optical fibers without a lamp or luminaire.

In creating the art piece, eight of Samsung’s S-series LED modules and two power supply units were used. Samsung’s S-series is a lineup of linear LED modules optimized to replace conventional T5 or T8 florescent fixtures including troffers and linear luminaires. The S-series enables great design flexibility by offering a wide variety of options for luminaire designers.

“While it is expected that LED-based lighting will take over more than 50 percent of the lighting industry in about two years, this collaboration that converges compelling artwork with our LED module technology will offer another chance for industry audiences to experience new possibilities in LED lighting designs,” said Jaewook Kwon, Vice President, LED Strategic Marketing Team at Samsung Electronics.

Artist Il Hoon Roh is an architect and designer who has been gaining a reputation in the field of design art in Europe for his collection of novel artwork that has been built with an assortment of visually provocative and technologically proficient materials.

“I tried to make an art piece that can be used in real life within the framework of lighting,” Roh said. “This collaboration project using LED lighting modules was very exciting and highly interesting. I enjoyed the process of turning familiar lighting furniture into a new form of artwork.”

“My art pieces are usually owned by art collectors overseas,” Roh added. “Any malfunction after being sold can cause critical damage to the artwork and my reputation as an artist, as I have to guarantee the quality of my creations. Working with Samsung LED lighting modules, which have completed a series of quality assessment tests, gave me confidence that my art pieces will remain reliable for a long time.”

Samsung will present “Saepio” in its booth at the Light + Building 2016 trade fair in Frankfurt, Germany from March 13th to 18th, along with a few other collaborations with the artist – the “Fabric R” series with Samsung’s COB LED packages, and the “D Light” with Samsung’s CSP linear modules.

Visit Booth B04, Hall 6.2 at Light + Building 2016 to experience more of Samsung’s differentiated LED technologies and innovative component solutions under the theme of “Lighting & Beyond.”
