With Samsung’s recent announcement of its plan to expand its Samsung Pay service to even more countries, people in all corners of the world are getting ready to pay in an entirely new way.

Spain is the one of the countries preparing for the expansion of Samsung Pay. Ahead of the Spanish launch soon, people can experience the mobile payment service at several locations throughout Barcelona, including the Samsung Experience Store in the city’s Gran Via 2 shopping complex.

“People in Spain are familiar with contactless payments, and have been for quite some time,” stated a sales representative at the store. “They’re really thrilled that they will be finally able to use this service with their own smartphones.”

The just-opened Samsung Experience Store boasts a Samsung Pay demonstration in which customers can see for themselves just how easy, flexible and convenient Samsung’s mobile payment service is. Those who have tried the in-store demonstration are especially fond of the security offered in Samsung Pay.

A sales representative of the Samsung Experience Store demonstrates Samsung Pay.

“They really like the fingerprint verification feature, as it makes the transaction feel more secure,” the representative said.

Barcelonians can also get hands-on with Samsung Pay at El Corte Inglés, the biggest department store group in Europe.

Launched last year in Korea and the U.S., Samsung Pay experienced a strong adoption rate, with five million registered users and over 500 million dollars processed in its first six months.

Compatible with both card and NFC readers, the most widely accepted mobile payment system in the world will soon reach even more consumers, beginning with China in March. It will continue its expansion in Australia, Brazil, Singapore, Spain, and the United Kingdom in the later part of this year.

Samsung Electronics has showcased a series of key 5G innovations including advanced 5G technology platforms with mmWave, and Multi-Link solution at MWC 2016, making the strongest case yet for the viability and capability of next-generation mobile technologies.

“In 2014, Samsung has set some of the earliest industry benchmarks in 5G technology and this year we announced another benchmark focusing to real-world trials, mobility tests and 5G use cases like live streaming VR in near 4K UHD with tier 1 operators in the USA and Korea.” said Dongsoo Park, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Sales and Marketing team in Samsung’s Networks Business. “5G, the next generation of mobile and related network technology, is at our doorstep and it will enable a degree of connectivity that we could have only dreamed of just 10 years ago.”

“Entire industries are going to be transformed by the connectivity enabled by 5G networks and devices” said Kyungwhoon Cheun, Executive Vice President and Head of Communications Research team in Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business. “Looking at the evolving needs of everyone from individual subscribers to large enterprises, Samsung is heavily focused on identifying and delivering the technologies that will shape the next decade of connected users and services.”

Milestone Technologies

At this year’s MWC, Samsung is unveiling the latest updates to its 5G technology platforms covering 3.5GHz to 28GHz and 60GHZ millimeter wave (mmWave). Highlights include advanced hybrid beamforming capabilities, ultra-high bitrates, extremely low latency, a prototype small cell form factor for mmWave and Samsung’s Full Dimension-MIMO technology which is capable of increasing cell capacity by over 65% compared to standard MIMO.

Samsung’s 28GHz and 60GHz mmWave systems have demonstrated impressive results, both in the lab and in real-world environments. Samsung’s research into mmWave spectrum has found that it is ideally suited for next-generation, high-density small cell-type deployments. In addition, the dense antenna arrays, combined with signal processing technology, enable advanced hybrid beamforming techniques that improve cell capacity and user experience by ensuring the best possible radio signal, directly targeted to each user’s device. Making use of this adaptive array antenna technology, Samsung’s beamforming technology has the ability to compensate in non-line of sight (nLoS) situations by bouncing a beam off of nearby surfaces in order to reach the user’s device.

World Firsts – Mobility in your Hand

Most recently, Samsung has begun to expand its development efforts to surpass other key milestones, including a successful demonstration of multi-cell mobility, as well as a handheld device in a commercial form-factor – both world firsts.

The mobility tests represent an important requirement for commercialization, and Samsung has demonstrated the ability to seamlessly handover between cells with no interruption to the user experience. This includes both intra-system (mmWave cell to mmWave cell) and inter-system (mmWave cell to LTE) handovers. Meanwhile, the device prototype, based on Samsung’s Galaxy S6, maintains existing 3G and LTE connectivity with the addition of an embedded 60GHz antenna module.

Multi-Link – Unified Connectivity

A typical mobile network today can be a pretty complicated web of technologies. Most of these networks are composed of a range of different frequency bands, usage regulations (licensed and unlicensed) and technology standards (2G, 3G, LTE, WiFi).

With 5G networks, Samsung will take aggregation technology one giant leap forward with the introduction of its Smart Multi-Link solution. Leveraging the power of Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software-Defined Networks (SDN) into a Unified Core solution, Samsung will provide operators with the ability to aggregate connectivity across any number of access technologies (e.g. 3-band LTE + WiFi, 5G + LTE-U, etc.) in a manner that is seamless and transparent for end-users.

Using its broad range of expertise across product portfolios—from mobile devices to home appliances to semiconductor chips—Samsung is able to rapidly innovate and build truly end-to-end portfolios that meet the diverse needs of its customers from users to service providers, and from enterprise to government.

Samsung also seeks to contribute to increased connectivity and ubiquitous access to services through its significant participation in global standards organizations such as the 3GPP and the ITU. At the same time, partnerships with both governments (such as the Giga Korea Project and Europe’s 5G-PPP) and various leading research institutions mean that Samsung is at the forefront of the 5G standardization effort.

Samsung Electronics and Deutsche Telekom announced that they have successfully showcased the world first end-to-end 5G demonstration at Mobile World Congress 2016.

During the live demonstration, Samsung, one of Deutsche Telekom’s 5G:haus partners, introduced its 60GHz millimeter wave(mmWave) small cell solution and handheld smartphones.

The demonstration involved the use of two Samsung smartphones to track the precise movements of a robotic arm from two separate angles. The 4K UHD video contents were transmitted over the air without any delay by the Ultra High Mobile broadband (U-MBB) service using Samsung’s 60GHz radio access technology. Samsung and Deutsche Telekom have achieved throughput more than 1.5 gigabit per second (Gbps) on each smartphone., It proves that 5G technology using spectrum above 6GHz can serve as one of the optimized solutions for next generation mobile services such as tactile internet, which requires lower latency and ultra high connectivity/throughput.

“We are pleased to have proven the feasibility of 5G technology through this live demonstration with Deutsche Telekom,” said Youngky Kim, President and Head of Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “It is important for Samsung to take a realistic path towards 5G world by securing seamless mobility, which will enable people to enjoy immersive experiences such as virtual reality broadcasting services and hologram calls using 5G infrastructures. Samsung will continue its innovation with Deutsche Telekom to bring 5G technology closer to our lives.”

“As we demonstrate together with our partners, the development of 5G technology has reached a very exciting phase. As a next step in our 5G:haus, we will involve customers in the technology development process to bring the technology closer to them and ensure it meets their expectations,” said Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, CTO Deutsche Telekom AG.

Samsung’s radio access for the spectrum above 6GHz is designed to help address the key challenges of future networks such as the explosive growth in demand for bandwidth and densities of increased devices. The large amount of empty bandwidth in the spectrum above 6GHz will make it possible to accommodate large quantities of data traffic.

Samsung’s mmWave Radio Access is capable of beam-forming as well as intra and inter-system mobility. Also it is capable of providing handover within the time below 100msec between mmWave cells and LTE cells/mmWave cells.

The devices used during the demonstration are hand-held smartphones containing 16 antenna elements that support beam-forming, alongside standard 3G and LTE. This capability of supporting multiple bands and technologies in a small form factor is one of the key enablers of 5G.

This 5G demonstration highlights the strength of Samsung Electronics that combines both infrastructure and device solutions for future networks – something that few others in the industry today can match. The R&D talents and knowledge of engineers in both the mobile communications and network business units combined to deliver this leading edge 5G demonstration. We expect this to be the foundation for delivering successful end-to-end 5G solutions at an industry leading pace.

At this Mobile World Congress 2016, Deutsche Telekom has demonstrated ultra Low Latency connectivity and ultra High Data speed for mobile broadband with Samsung and other 5G:haus partners at Deutsche Telekom’s booth (Exhibit Hall 3 Stand 3L20).

The Samsung mmWave Mobile Radio Access and high-end smartphone devices will be also exhibited at both Deutsche Telekom’s booth (Exhibit Hall 3 Stand 3L20) and Samsung Networks’ booth (Exhibit Hall 2 Stand 2M10) during Mobile World Congress 2016, from February 22 to 25 in Barcelona, Spain.

Just ahead of Mobile World Congress 2016, Samsung Electronics made waves in Barcelona with its most immersive Galaxy Unpacked event yet on February 21. The company rolled out the highly anticipated flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, along with the boundary-breaking Gear 360 camera, much to the delight of the thousands in attendance, as well as those live streaming the event from around the world.

Held under the theme “Beyond Barriers,” the company showcased its continued efforts to push past limits and journey through the unexplored. Staying true to the theme, the event was centered around a 360-degree square stage that was “unpacked” at the start of the event, when an arrangement of glowing transformative screens hanging above it opened like a box.

This stunning 3D effect was only enhanced by the more than 5,000 Gear VR headsets that were donned by attendees during new product introductions—a memorable highlight that received cheers from all corners of the auditorium. The event was also the industry’s first to be broadcasted live in virtual reality, making it possible for viewers to get a front-row view of the action from the comfort of their homes.

The event began with “Unpacking Samsung,” a video that featured the compelling story behind Samsung’s innovation in the mobile industry. It was followed up by a motivating opening speech by DJ Koh, President of Samsung Electronics Mobile Communications Business, who discussed Samsung’s commitment to developing people-inspired innovation. There were also guest appearances by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Tim Sweeney, founder of Epic Games, which demonstrated the company’s strong commitment to the industry.

In case you missed it, here is a recap of the highlights in photos.

Catalonia Square is a large plaza in central Barcelona that is most often associated with its fountains and statues, its proximity to some of the Spanish city’s most popular attractions, and the flocks of pigeons and street performers that gather there.

But with MWC 2016 just around the corner, it’s also the location of a thrilling amusement park roller coaster. Well, virtually, at least.

That’s because the square is the site of Samsung’s 4D Theater with Gear VR experience—a technological encounter that virtually transports participants to another place, and makes them feel as if they are really there.

After eagerly taking their seats, guests donned Samsung’s Gear VR headsets and were quickly transported from the city center of Barcelona to the tracks of Six Flags Magic Mountain’s Twisted Colossus, a hybrid wood and steel roller coaster that features barrel roll inversions and a near-vertical drop.

This wild ride offered a realistic, adrenaline-pumping experience, thanks to specialized 4D chairs that moved in sync to the movements displayed on the headsets. Yet, unlike traditional 4D theater in which viewers wear 3D glasses, Samsung’s 4D Theater with Gear VR offered an entirely new experience.

One participant, after completing the experience told Samsung Newsroom, “This is way better than regular 4D. I could look around in all directions and see the entire amusement park. It felt like a real-life roller coaster!”

With virtual reality playing an increasingly more important role at MWC this year, the 4D Theater with Gear VR experience is but a preview of what’s to come.

Check out the 4D Theater with Gear VR experience in Catalonia Square until February 28, 2016 and stay tuned to see how Samsung is innovating to transform the way the world is connected and entertained, virtually.

Samsung Electronics announced the Samsung Gear S2 classic 3G as the first device in the market to be equipped with an eSIM compliant to GSMA Consumer Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP) architecture.

“At Samsung, we aim to meet and anticipate consumers’ needs and the development of the first GSMA-compliant eSIM is further example of our pursuit of meaningful innovation,” said Yunsang Park, Senior Vice President of R&D Office, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “We are excited to introduce Samsung Gear S2 3G classic as not only a starting point for more devices to be connected globally, but as a step forward in our commitment to support the development of the IoT market.”

Samsung has played an instrumental role in driving cross-industry collaboration among global operators and SIM vendors to implement a GSMA compliant eSIM to consumer device. The company worked with several industry partners including: M1 Limited, Orange, Singtel, StarHub Ltd., Telefónica, TeliaSonera, Vodafone Group and SIM Vendors – Gemalto, Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) and Oberthur Technologies. This group has been working together to create a technical specification, which will allow users to download a mobile network operator’s profile to eSIM-powered companion devices.

The common approach and consistent user experience delivered by this eSIM solution will help grow the IoT market, allowing manufacturers to build products that can support global deployment. In turn, it will also benefit consumers by maintaining security and providing more choices on devices and operators. Samsung and its partners are striving to ensure that this proposed eSIM solution gives full coverage to every region and is made available to more customers.

“We worked closely with the mobile industry to create a global and interoperable specification that gives consumers with a mobile subscription the freedom to remotely connect their devices to a mobile network. This is just the beginning of what is possible and will open up the market to new and exciting device.”

– Jean-Christophe Tisseuil, Head of SIM, GSMA

“Orange is improving the secondary device customer journey and we are excited that our customers using the Gear S2 will be able to leave their mobile at home but still be reachable. With the proliferation of connected devices, the cellular connectivity of multiple objects will be of paramount importance and the work we have carried out with Samsung and other partners towards a standardised approach to eSIM is a great step forward.”

– Yves Maitre, Executive Vice President of Connected Objects and Partnerships, Orange.

“Telefónica welcomes Samsung’s contribution to the phase 1 GSMA eSIM technical specification and is pleased to see how Samsung has implemented it into the new wearables family. We are firmly committed to support the GSMA activity to create a fully interoperable eSIM standard as a critical enabler of secure connectivity and privacy for the next billion connected devices.”

– Francisco Montalvo, Group Devices Director at Telefónica

“We’re really happy to be part of this initiative and to bring even more great services and devices to our customers. The connected world is growing by the day and we want our customers to enjoy every part of it – on their terms. The eSIM is an important step in this direction.”

– Jesper Hedblom, Head of Commercial, TeliaSonera

“The GSMA’s new e-SIM standard gives our customers freedom to directly connect devices like the Samsung Gear S2 classic 3G to Vodafone’s fast and reliable mobile networks. We’ll launch this innovative device in Germany. The smartwatch can be easily added to our customers’ Vodafone Red plan allowing them to stay confidently connected while doing everything from receiving calls to going for a run – even if they leave their smartphone at home.”

– Patrick Chomet, Group Terminals Director, Vodafone Group

“The launch of the Samsung Gear S2 sets a benchmark for the upper end of the smartwatch market in terms of connectivity capabilities and customer experience. By securely and remotely managing the smartwatch’s mobile subscription credentials, Gemalto’s On-Demand Subscription Management helps greatly simplify the deployment of the Samsung Gear S2 all over the world, in accordance with GSMA specifications.”

– David Buhan, Senior Vice President of Mobile Subscriber Services for Gemalto

“We are proud to be part of the commercial launch of Samsung’s Gear S2, especially since it is equipped with our eSIM management technology. In cooperation with the Mobile Network Operators, Samsung and G&D have been among the driving forces behind the latest GSMA eSIM specification addressing consumers and the IoT. It was a successful team effort, the results of which are being showcased at the MWC. We look forward to continuing this close cooperation with Samsung and the MNO partners to keep delivering secure and convenient eSIM solutions for consumers.”

– Carsten Ahrens, Head of the Telecommunication Industries division, Giesecke & Devrient (G&D)

“Together with Samsung and our MNO partners we are fully committed to deliver standalone connectivity for wearable devices in compliance with the use cases defined by the GSMA Consumer RSP initiative. OT’s embedded SIM technology and remote SIM provisioning solution will enable MNOs to provide their subscribers with a very convenient and fully digitized customer experience, without any impact on MNOs’ existing system and network infrastructure, and without any compromise on the privacy and security of MNOs’ credentials.”

– Marek Juda, EVP of Oberthur Technologies, Connected Device Makers business

The Gear S2 classic 3G equipped with GSMA compliant eSIM will be available starting from March.

As the amount of data services and smartphone devices dramatically increases, more spectrum is required to accommodate fast growing data traffic and help ensure a great user experience. LTE in Unlicensed spectrum includes a key family of technologies that allows aggregation of licensed and unlicensed spectrum bands, such as 5 GHz, to efficiently and timely increase network capacity and speed.

The Samsung LTE-U eFemto cell incorporates a Qualcomm FSM9955 chipset from Qualcomm Technologies. Through aggregation of licensed and unlicensed spectrum, Samsung’s LTE-U eFemto cells can help mobile operators cope with the skyrocketing demand for mobile data by improving network performance in hotspots, venues and enterprise environments including offices, malls, hospitals and other public spaces and facilities.

The Qualcomm FSM9955 chipset incorporates sophisticated enhanced Carrier Sensing Adaptive Transmission (eCSAT) features for coexistence with Wi-Fi per the latest LTE-U Forum specifications released last October, designed to enable fair sharing of unlicensed spectrum in both below and above Wi-Fi’s Energy-Detect (ED) threshold scenarios.

Using the Qualcomm FSM9955 chipset, the Samsung LTE-U eFemto cell can also support LTE Licensed-Assisted Access (LAA) by simple software upgrade. LAA incorporates “Listen-Before-Talk” features required in certain regions for fair co-existence with Wi-Fi, making it a global solution for bringing LTE into unlicensed spectrum. LAA is part of the 3GPP LTE Advanced Pro Release 13 standard to be finalized in early 2016 and then expected to be rapidly adopted by operators around the world.

“We are pleased to collaborate with industry leader Samsung in accelerating small cell innovations and extending the benefits of LTE to unlicensed spectrum,” said Neville Meijers, Vice President of Small Cells, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Making adequate use of both licensed and unlicensed spectrum bands is essential to meet data demand and provide end users with the best possible mobile experience.”

“We are proud to bring this innovative LTE-U technology into our small cell portfolio. Operators and enterprises need a combination of cutting-edge technology and affordability to meet the explosive demand for data, both today with 4G and beyond.” said Kiho Cho, Vice President of Network System Design Lab, Network Business at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung LTE-U eFemto cells will benefit end users by enabling faster data communications, with seamless mobility and reliable performance, while minimizing interference with Wi-Fi.”

The Samsung LTE-U eFemto cell is designed to enable plug-and-play deployments with easier installation and a high capacity for both enterprises and operators. A single small cell unit can support three carriers of 20 MHz each, across both licensed and unlicensed spectrum, offering a peak download throughput up to 450Mbps.

The Samsung LTE-U eFemto cell with Qualcomm FSM9955 chipset will be exhibited at the Qualcomm booth (Exhibit Hall 3 #3E10) and the Samsung booth (Exhibit Hall 2 Stand 2M10) during Mobile World Congress 2016, February 22-25 in Barcelona, Spain.

Samsung Electronics, will showcase 4G LTE and advanced mobile technologies that pave the way towards a 5G future at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC). To provide ultra-fast mobile communication with reliable mobility and architectural flexibility, Samsung is also introducing multilink connectivity technology, centralized radio, Internet of Things, and mmWave radio access solutions.

“The evolution of communication technologies has transformed the way people live their lives,” said Youngky Kim, President and Head of Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “5G technology will offer us a new level of experience, which is immersive, tactile and ubiquitous. Thanks to seamless mobility, higher throughput and low latency of 5G technology, new services like hologram calls, virtual reality broadcasting of live football games and self-driving cars will enrich our lives.” he added.

5G Technology

At MWC 2016, Samsung will make 5G technology a reality by introducing reliable mobility and feasibility to utilize spectrums above 6GHz. Samsung will demonstrate the capability of the technology by transmitting eight Ultra High-Definition 4K videos over the air without delays. The company will simultaneously use its mmWave radio system for spectrums above 6GHz. This will show a low latency of less than one millisecond and a high speed data communication in gigabit throughput.

In addition, Samsung will introduce world’s first mobile handover test using the mmWave radio system and smartphone-integrated, multiple antenna modules in a small form factor. It is another footstep toward realization of 5G technology into reality that no one has not yet introduced.

Multi-link Connectivity Solution

The explosive growth in demand for mobile data is forcing operators to find new ways to make their network architecture simple and flexible. Operators face challenges to efficiently manage heterogeneous networks that include LTE/WiFi, macro/small cells, licensed/unlicensed spectrums and even different generations from 2G to 5G.

To address these challenges, Samsung will present a range of new solutions, including LTE-Unlicensed (LTE-U) / License Assisted Access (LAA), Multi-Path Transfer Control Protocol (MP-TCP), D-RAN Inter-site Carrier Aggregation and Samsung Smart Multi-Linktm.

Multi-Path Transfer Control Protocol (MP-TCP) technology is currently one of the key priorities for Samsung. This technology allows aggregation among independent networks using different technologies, such as WiFi, IoT, 3G, 4G, 5G and more. Distinguished from other technologies such as Dual/Multi connectivity, MP-TCP enables the merging of data streams from each independent network, including non-3GPP standard based networks, at the Internet Protocol (IP) layer, which makes aggregation much simpler and faster. This technology has already been successfully commercialized in Korea, one of the world’s most data-centric countries, last year.

Samsung is also introducing Smart Multi-Linktm for the first time, based on its Unified Core architecture. This is designed to support backward and forward compatibility, incorporating 2G to 5G technology, in addition to embracing non-3GPP standard technologies. Using Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Self Defined Network (SDN), Smart Multi-Linktm enables the transformation of distributive networks into one unified and flexible network.

Internet of Things (IoT)

The key lineup of Samsung IoT solutions will be seen at this year’s MWC as well; including IoT Core, Gateways and various radio access solutions such as a standalone IoT base station, IoT integrated Digital Unit (DU) and LoRaTM based Unlicensed Low Power Wide Area (LPWA).

Samsung will also introduce its Mission-Critical IoT service, a new use case incorporated with Public Safety-LTE. As a total solution provider of consumer electronics and carrier solutions, Samsung can provide a complete package of Mission-Critical IoT services, even including a diverse range of sensors and devices.

Not only will Samsung fulfill its requirements for 3GPP standards such as CAT-0, CAT-1, CAT-M, NB-IoT in 2016, but the company will also unveil its ‘standard beyond’ technologies in 2017, which will be especially optimal for Mission-Critical IoT.

Public-Safety LTE

Samsung will demonstrate its live Push-to-Talk services with multiple handheld devices, to show a typical emergency use case. In particular, this demonstration will be showcased with Evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (eMBMS), which enables HD videos and images to be broadcast to multiple devices instantly with minimized network resources. And with a virtualized core solution, a single PS-LTE network can be configured and operated independently for each government agency such as the police, fire services and national railways, while being controlled efficiently from a single point at the main control center.

Furthermore, Samsung will be deploying the world’s first 3GPP standard based PS-LTE network in Korea as the only end-to-end solution provider—from devices to core and radio solutions.

Centralized-RAN Evolution: C-RAN 2.0+

With commercial deployment of C-RAN in Korea, Samsung has already undergone two cycles of upgrades. This year, Samsung will enhance its C-RAN platform once again by introducing C-RAN 2.0+. Retaining the benefits from Samsung’s Smart SON and Smart Scheduler, base stations will detect the interference at the cell-edge and control radio transmission power in real time and maximize the total data throughput by 40~50% on average.

C-RAN is already considered a revolutionary part of the cellular industry’s future. Samsung’s continuous C-RAN evolution will be an important asset for operators preparing for 5G networks.

All of these latest solutions will be exhibited at the Samsung booth (Exhibit Hall 2 Stand 2M10) during Mobile World Congress 2016 from February 22-25 in Barcelona, Spain.

While the latest smart phones may be the focus of attention at Mobile World Congress 2016, some of the most interesting tech gadgets that will be unveiled to the world aren’t yet considered to be part of the mainstream.

Take IOFIT, for example. Technically considered a wearable device, this unique smart shoe is in a category of its own. Developed by Salted Venture, a startup supported by Samsung Electronics, IOFIT is a solution that utilizes a combination of pressure sensors and a coaching app to improve a user’s balance and body posture to enhance one’s fitness routine or golf swing.

“There’s so much valuable information coming from our feet, and it’s being wasted,” said Jacob Cho, CEO of Salted Venture. “So, we wanted to make use of this data and utilize it to provide value to people. That was the driving force behind IOFIT.”

Getting Off on the Right Foot

The idea for the smart shoe was born at C-Lab, one of Samsung’s primary Innovation Programs that helps its employees to nurture creative business ideas. Soon thereafter, the team left the firm to establish Salted Venture as an independent company and create new business opportunities.

After realizing the possibilities and potential applications of the information coming from feet—possibilities that range from healthcare initiatives to video games—the minds behind IOFIT realized that they needed to segment their customer group to a more specific target to provide the most value. That’s when their extensive field research began.

While visiting premium fitness centers and professional golf facilities, the team learned how force plates—equipment used for posture rehabilitation and data analysis—proved the value of their idea. “There was an existing solution that was providing value already,” said COO and UX Planner Sehee Lee. “That’s what validated our belief in how this product can provide value for people.” Unlike the static, pricey equipment, however, the IOFIT shoe would need to be portable and cost-effective.

To do this, data analysis technology like accelerometers and pressure sensors were incorporated into the outsoles of shoes. Together, they are able to measure users’ balance, weight shift, ground contact force and location of COG (Center of Gravity)—specific factors essential to enable a more efficient and injury-free fitness and golf experience. This data, updated in real-time, is displayed on a pressure map on the screen of the IOFIT smartphone app, which pairs to the shoes.

“The technology is not only portable, but also seamless. It’s integrated into something you wear all the time, so you don’t even have to think about it,” noted Marketer Jungsoo Park.

IOFIT: A New Kind of Smart Shoe

As wearable device users, the creators behind IOFIT recognized the limitations of wearables such as smartwatches, fitness trackers and even other smart shoes currently available on the market.

“They’re tracking and throwing around all these data points and suggesting problems, but not providing a solution to the problem,” Cho said. “The few devices that have been able to offer a solution are trying to serve as an alternative to training with a coach, and attempting to build something greater than a human-to-human experience.”

As such, it didn’t take long for IOFIT to become centered specifically on coaching. Instead of simply offering users a compilation of data, the Salted Venture team developed a system that allows for an enhanced person-to-person connection.

What makes this possible is the video playback feature of the IOFIT application, which allows a user to evaluate their form and the respective real-time data all on one screen. Utilizing this core feature, a user can better visualize how they look, and how their stance and posture are affecting their fitness routine or their golf swing.

Another core feature of the application is the customizable coaching and analysis software which can be used to leave feedback or compare saved videos. With this tool, a coach can draw directly on the video or leave voice-over comments to offer precise, straightforward feedback. Furthermore, two videos can be compared side-by-side or stacked to give a clearer picture of what the data should or should not look like, allowing trainers to easily coach no matter their location in the world.

“We want to be a platform and a coaching tool for people to use. It’s an add-on to the interactive experience between people,” stated Lee. “You can’t outweigh the benefits that come from a real human-to-human interactive experience.” In this way, IOFIT remains unique in an ever-growing wearables market.

Going Global

While functionality is indeed an important factor, the footwear industry is also about style, which is why Salted Venture is focusing many of their efforts on the design of IOFIT.

“We don’t want people to just buy our shoes for functionality. We also want them to feel proud when they wear our shoes in public,” said Park.

As such, the startup is actively seeking business opportunities with footwear companies, and has already garnered attention from some of the world’s biggest brands. The group hopes to reach out to other shoe brands that share their vision during Mobile World Congress later this month in Barcelona, where they will be participating as an exhibitor.

Salted Venture is also excited to showcase IOFIT on a global level and get feedback on their product.

“Our goal is to empower people who love fitness and sports to train smarter and coach better,” Cho explained. “We want to see our products being used by inspiring athletes, coaches and individuals all over the world and to make their training and coaching experience the best it can be.”

Be sure to check out IOFIT at MWC from February 22 to February 26, 2016. IOFIT will be showcased at Stand 8.0K5 in Hall 8.0 of Fira Gran Via. To watch IOFIT demonstration, check out the video below.

For several years, Samsung Electronic has introduced its newest flagship mobile devices with its Galaxy Unpacked events. And about a month before the event itself, anticipation is built with a carefully designed invitation, fashioned to evoke the new device that’s about to be unveiled. But what’s the connection between that invitation and the innovative product Samsung launches? It turns out there are always clues, once you know what to look for.

2012 Unpacked Invitation and Galaxy S3

In 2012, people were asked to “come and meet the next Galaxy” with an invitation that featured shiny splashes of color in organic, natural shapes. When the Galaxy S3 made its debut in London, it too featured rich colors and a natural design form.

2013 Unpacked Invitation Episode 2 and Galaxy Note 3

For Unpacked Episode 2 in 2013, the big clue was the white stitching around the invitation. That event launched the Galaxy Note 3, notable for its textured back cover, which featured delicate stitching around the outside.

2014 Unpacked Invitation and Galaxy S5

The invitation for the Unpacked in February 2014 showed nine colorful icons and plenty of number 5s. Those icons matched the style of the new UX and the redesigned icons used for the new Galaxy S5.

2014 Unpacked Episode 2 Invitation and Galaxy Note 4

Later that year came Unpacked Episode 2, and this time the invitation showed a sketch of a semi-circle, with several icons laid out around the arc. That drawing turned out to be a reference to Air Command, a useful new interface that debuted with the Galaxy Note 4. With Air Command, ejecting the S Pen from its holder automatically brought up such S Pen related apps as Action Memo, Screen Write, Image Clip and Smart Select.

Last year, the Unpacked invitation in Barcelona simply asked “What’s Next”—but with an elegant and suggestive curve cutting across the page. That turned out to be the introduction of the Galaxy S6 edge, which featured a dual curved screen.

2015 Unpacked venue and Gear S2

Then in September 2015 came the debut of the Gear S2, Samsung’s stylish new smartwatch. The big surprise this time was the Gear S2’s unique UX, centered around a rotating bezel. To reflect that major change in design, the shape of the entire showcase was made circular.

2016 Unpacked Invitation

Now, Samsung is promising an Unpacked event that can “rethink what a phone can do.” In addition to the invitation, Samsung introduced a new video, “Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2016 – #TheNextGalaxy”, featuring someone wearing a Gear VR, using virtual reality to open a mysterious black box. All we know is the tagline from the short video: “#TheNextGalaxy.” Are you ready to enjoy the next Galaxy and Unpacked event on February 21?

Samsung’s exclusive memory exhibit at MWC gave partners and visitors an in-depth view of the advancements in mobile, device and PC memory solutions. Samsung focused their displays on LP DDR, SSD, eMMC, eMCP, ePOP, memory cards and leading-edge embedded storage for smartphones and tablets.

Each memory station held attention by showing the products underneath a magnifying glass to offer a closer look into the compact size while emphasizing the high power output and performance on the displays around them.

LPDDR3 and LPDDR4 Memory Display

The LPDDR3 and the LPDDR4, LP standing for low power, were among the memory solutions highlighted within Samsung’s exhibit. The LPDDR3 and 4, which are the backbones of current mobile applications, offer faster application launch time, a boost in power efficiency, and are a combination of performance and power that can even support UHD displays. Both DRAM chips have 20nm class processors and are packaged POP and discrete. The LPDDR3 has a 23% faster application launch time than the LPDDR2, and a 73% faster email launch time. It is also 40% more power efficient than the LPDDR2. The LPDDR4, which boasts a lightning fast 3200Mbps speed is 40% more power efficient than the LPDDR3.

Universal Flash Storage Memory Display

Samsung’s Universal Flash Storage offered attendees a closer look at how the advantages of eMMC and SSD can be brought together to create the next generation of solutions within the memory ecosystem. Samsung’s UFS is fast to boot, fast to respond, fast to copy (3x faster), and will allow users 3x the multitasking capabilities.

eMCP Memory Display

eMCP memory helps to optimize the PCB space, offering a variety of ways to slim down mobile devices. eMCP is cost effective, boosts in-house capability, offers 40% more space efficiency and has a less seasonal effect.

Samsung’s Memory Solutions exhibition at MWC is a true example of how a technology company is pushing the boundaries in memory innovation and keeping the consumers’ best interest in mind, while also considering design and efficiency to produce the best products available.

Hola, and welcome to the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain. MWC is a congregation of nearly 800 operators, with more than 250 companies in the broader mobile industry. Every year, Barcelona offers a forum for the world’s leaders in mobile technology to showcase their newest products in the mobile ecosystem, including handsets, devices, software, internet and equipment.

In 2006, the location of the MWC was moved from Cannes to the Fira Gran Via in Barcelona, Europe’s second largest exhibition centers, due to the growing number of participants and attendees. The GSMA, the organization behind MWC, expects that attendance for Mobile World Congress 2015 will exceed the record of nearly 86,000 attendees set at the 2014 event. Mobile World Congress will be held 2-5 March 2015 at Fira Gran Via in Barcelona, with events also taking place at Fira Montjuïc.

One event in particular has been generating an enormous amount of excitement and buzz, and will take place ahead of official start of MWC on March 1st, 2015. Samsung’s Unpacked event will reveal to the world the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, the new flagship models to which the smartphone technology leader has dedicated an unprecedented amount of research and development, in hopes of creating the best smartphone available on the market.

The full Unpacked event will soon be available to be viewed.

The Unpacked Event

Samsung’s Unpacked event set sail on a beautiful sunny day in Barcelona, near the Mediterranean Sea. The atmosphere was filled with languages from around the globe, as people from all over the world gathered to witness Samsung’s revealing of the groundbreaking Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. As the event was nearing the time of launch, news and media were invited into the auditorium, and a once empty venue filled with thousands of chairs, was instantaneously occupied as a wave people wearing orange wrist bands flooded in to get the best seat.

When the time finally arrived at 6:30 PM, the auditorium was transformed into an immersive presentation, surrounded by near 360 degrees of screens, displaying futuristic effects accompanied by music with similar themes. Then, a voice began addressing the crowd with the first official images if the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge being brilliantly displayed on the screens.

“What’s next? It’s the question that begins all our exploring. It ignites our imagination. Inspires us to bring in tomorrow, today. Tomorrow, metals will flow. Beauty will be powerful. Walls will disappear, reflections will be free. Colors will live. The future will be the present. Light the way to next. Welcome to Galaxy Unpacked 2015.”

With the audience’s full attention placed on center stage, Young Hee Lee, Executive Vice President opened the presentation and readied the world for the revealing of the next Galaxy. She then introduced JK Shin, CEO and head of the IM division.

Two words appeared on the screens that encapsulate Samsung’s tireless effort to bring the world the best mobile device possible; Relentless Innovation. “No more internet rumors, today we introduce what’s next.” JK Shin delved deeper into Samsung’s mission in not only developing the most beautiful device, but also the most powerful before fading into mesmerizing and detailed displays of the new Galaxy. JK Shin discussed the key elements of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, focusing on Samsung Pay, Knox Security, the powerful and revolutionary front and rear cameras, and Samsung’s cutting-edge developments in wireless charging.

Then, out from his jacket pocket, came the device everyone was waiting for; the Galaxy S6 edge. Mr. Shin explained that Samsung has an important role to play in advancing technology in our lives. With Samsung’s firsts in smartphone innovation and advancements, the technology leader is setting the bar high, and other companies will soon follow, realizing the need in incorporating similar technology in their products. “The next is now!” Samsung has set up to deliver something better than ever before.

Hyun Yeul Lee, the User Experience leader behind the Galaxy series, went on to describe the new design interface and functionality. Simple and refined, the UX is designed to be beautiful and basic. Text has replaced symbols, color codes group applications together based on their functionality and the edge’s curved screens further enhance user’s interaction with the device, allowing then to know who is contacting them and the urgency needed in response. There will no longer be hard to use and hard to find features and most importantly, “No more scrolling!” Hyun Yeul Lee says with amplitude.

Following Hyun Yeul Lee, Justin Denison, from Samsung America, reiterates how Samsung has set the bar for the rest of the industry in memory, battery life, wireless charging, and smartphone camera technology. The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge will feature eMMC memory cards that will integrate seamlessly with SSD’s, creating a whole new world of Universal Flash Storage.

Justin Denison shortly touches on the new Gear VR 2, and how it and the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge will bring about an out of this world immersive experience. The super AMOLED screen on the next Galaxy displays practically crystal-clear images for Gear VR 2 users, creating the best virtual adventures possible.

When describing the Galaxy battery capabilities, Mr. Denison explains that it only takes 10 minutes of charge time to product enough battery power that will last 4 hours of normal usage.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge will come with Samsung Pay, a highly secure and universally accepted mobile payment system that will work with most credit cards, debit cards and NFC. The MST even allows the users to use mobile payments even when mag strips can only be used. For ease of mind, users’ data remains only with their banks, not within the device or with Samsung Pay.

The last presenter, Gregory Wade, described in depth the emphasis Samsung has put into its mobile security with Samsung Knox. “Ready for business, right out of the box!”

After the Unpacked presentation, the audience was invited to have a hands-on interaction with the devices of the future. The moment everyone was waiting for, actually having the opportunity hold and use the devices, had arrived. Crowds quickly surrounded the exhibition stalls where several models of the phone could be held.

One attendee explained that he was very impressed with the S6, particularly the sleek design of the metal frame and that the S6 is the best model he has seen from Samsung, or any other mobile company.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 lived up to the hype and far exceeded expectations, especially when attendees could actually feel the lightweight and impressive metal design in their hands.

The next Galaxy will be available in select markets beginning on April 10th, 2015.

Updated at 11:00 PM CET, following the conclusion of the Unpacked event

Samsung’s Presence at MWC

It is clearly evident that Samsung has a strong presence at this year’s MWC. After yesterday’s Unpacked event and unveiling of Samsung’s new Galaxy S6 and S6 edge flagship models, crowds were in constant flow with attendees wanting a hands-on interaction with the most powerful and innovative smartphone soon to be in the consumer market.

Samsung’s impressive mobile exhibition showcases the key elements of Samsung’s arsenal of products, applications, security, and memory solutions. The obvious excitement was surrounding the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, drawing scores of people and media to the Samsung Mobile stage.

Those with the necessary credentials were allowed access into Samsung’s elegant exhibit, housing the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge and Gear VR Innovator Edition for Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, as well as demonstrations of the S Health app, Samsung KNOX security system, and the highly anticipated Samsung Pay, which is set to revolutionize mobile payment.

In addition to mobile offerings, Samsung has an exhibit dedicated to Networks Solutions and Device Solutions.

Samsung Tomorrow will be covering the entire event with exclusive, onsite interviews, video demonstrations and exciting information and coverage. Follow Samsung Tomorrow for up to date news and announcements from Samsung during the Mobile World Congress 2015.
