Samsung Electronics today announced Samsung ARTIK Cloud Monetization for the Internet of Things (IoT), a new service to monetize the data shared by IoT devices and enable an IoT data economy. For the first time, device manufacturers and service providers can tap into an open ecosystem and create service plans that generate revenue directly from the interactions of devices and services. With this unique data monetization model, device manufacturers can take advantage of Samsung ARTIK Cloud’s extensive interoperability features to generate new revenue streams and implement new business models, such as hardware as a service.

For device manufacturers, IoT shifts their operating model from selling hardware to selling hardware products connected to digital applications. Today, device manufacturers often have trouble recouping data costs associated with free applications and supporting an ecosystem of third-party devices, apps and services. Manufacturers have to either absorb the data costs of operating devices in the field, or factor in anticipated data costs to the retail price of devices.

Samsung ARTIK Cloud Monetization addresses this problem by providing a complete brokering, metering and payments system. It gives device manufacturers an easy way to make their devices interoperable with third-party devices and applications, and monetize data useage. With the Samsung ARTIK Cloud developer portal, device manufacturers have the flexibility to define service plans that meet their business needs. Samsung ARTIK Cloud brokers and meters user interactions against the defined plan, and manages upgrades, payments and revenue share back to the device OEM.

“Samsung is committed to growing the IoT data economy,” said James Stansberry, senior vice president and global head of ARTIK at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung ARTIK Cloud Monetization uniquely positions us to help device manufacturers find new ways to make money from IoT and enable more applications for their customers. This is part of our long-term strategy to facilitate the development of secure IoT products and services, promote wide-scale interoperability, and create a platform and business model for an entire IoT ecosystem to thrive. Like the mobile phone industry, IoT will be driven by open systems, interoperability and support from innovative applications.”

“Samsung ARTIK is leading the way in helping device manufacturers easily make their devices interoperable with third-party devices and applications, as well as be able to monetize data use, and we are excited to be part of the journey,” said Pete Horton, vice president of market development at Legrand. “The new data broker model helps Legrand focus on our core competency of building market leading devices, while also allowing us to benefit from Samsung’s open ecosystem of third-party apps and services. It’s the missing piece to the IoT puzzle.”

“We’re excited to partner with Samsung ARTIK on the new monetization model,” said Stefan Grosjean, founder and CEO of Smappee, provider of smart energy solutions. “Increasing the reach of devices while also providing a path to monetization is key to the successful evolution of IoT.”

“The problem with IoT is that many hardware companies are selling products without a clear view on sustainable business models. There’s a lot of pressure now to monetize data,” said Dilip Sarangan, global research director, IoT & digital transformation at Frost & Sullivan. “Samsung ARTIKTM Cloud Monetization is out front in addressing a crucial need in the market. It can help hardware developers monetize solutions without necessarily putting in all the effort themselves. This is a huge value proposition, especially on the consumer side, which has an untapped potential, but also on the enterprise side.”

Thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT), digitization will soon become tangible – taking the form of connected “things“ of all kinds. Technological advancements in the realm of hardware as well as the development of key technologies such as miniature RFID chips have paved the way for this new stage of digital transformation. In addition, the widespread introduction of 5G will lead to the exchange of mobile data at high speeds. For businesses, that is good news: not only can they become more agile and streamline their processes, this new infrastructure also enables them to develop and implement entirely new business models. The following five hypotheses elaborate on that.

IoT Requires Openness and Security

The IoT will require open standards across all industries, which is why we advocate for transparent R&D work and support open platforms. We also work very closely with our global partner network to achieve that openness.1 However, IoT ecosystems that are based on interoperability and openness will also demand robust security. The higher the number of devices that are connected to a network, the greater the vulnerability for being hacked. With stricter penalties looming on the horizon, as the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will sharpen the consequences for data protection violations, it is imperative that every professional IoT solution be paired with a well-founded security concept that includes proactive security systems as well as robust security platforms.

“Open Economy” is on its Way

The success of mobile devices and the interconnectedness brought about by the IoT are important drivers behind the overall transformation towards the so-called “Open Economy”. By 2020, 40 percent of employees will work on a self-employed basis.2 Integrating these freelancers, as well as increasingly autonomous employees into business processes in a way that is effective and secure, is one of the biggest challenges that business must face going forward. After all, rigid office structures are increasingly obsolete: the “Open Economy” will be dominated by flexible schedules and office models. Furthermore, new forms of collaboration will evolve – not just with startups, but former competitors as well. To ensure that these new forms of cooperation are based on a swift exchange of data and knowledge without compromising the integrity of sensitive information, security architectures must be rooted deep in the hardware of mobile devices.

IoT is More than Just Efficiency

A recent study by the German IT industry association Bitkom3 revealed that most German businesses are currently undergoing a transformation process as a result of digitization. However, only 39 percent use the potential of digital technology to offer new products or services. Against this background, it seems important to emphasize that the businesses focusing solely on optimizing their processes and increasing efficiency may fail to recognize the IoT’s broader and more diverse potential. The IoT enables businesses to develop innovative products and services as well as data-driven business models – and thus helps them gain access to new markets. Making full use of these opportunities is not a matter for the future – it starts today. According to analysts and consulting firms, the IoT’s overall business potential is worth billions. For example, McKinsey4 estimates the IoT’s global economic value to be between 3.9 to 11.1 trillion dollars annually for 2025.

Cognitive Machine Learning Will Lead to More Comfort

The IoT era has the potential to bring users a new level of comfort and service, which will in turn impact consumers‘ future needs and expectations. The “smartness” and interconnectedness of utility objects – from the refrigerator to the car – will simplify our daily lives and result in new services that are not only convenient, but will save time as well as costs. It will also answer individual needs with much greater precision. In this context, the interoperability of devices as well as the learning aptitude of systems will become much more relevant for the development of IoT-based products and services. Just recently, Peugeot and Samsung teamed up and announced the “Peugeot Instinct Concept” – an internet-enabled concept car representing Peugeot’s take on the self-driving experience. It’s the first time a car has been enabled with a functional IoT platform, the SAMSUNG ARTIK Cloud, which seamlessly connects the car to the user’s cloud and thus to a full range of connected devices such as a smartphone, smartwatch or home automation system. This way, users can interact with their cars from any cloud-enabled device. On the other hand, the concept car can adjust its settings depending on other devices.

IoT Means Continuous Innovation

At Samsung, we regard it as our responsibility to contribute to the necessary groundwork for the IoT to be successful. Therefore, we will further expand our innovative capacity in the development of devices, components and software, and keep on optimizing them for the IoT era. Our aim is that, from 2020 onwards, almost all Samsung devices will be IoT-ready. For businesses, we offer a smart end-to-end platform for the IoT – SAMSUNG ARTIK – which equips them with the necessary hardware and software to develop their IoT solutions in-house, build their own prototypes in a cost-effective way and quickly bring new products and services to market. Together with our partners, we also continuously introduce new innovative solutions and will keep on doing so. It is our overarching goal to support businesses during their digital transformation in the best possible way, and to help them implement new technology concepts so they can make full use of the potential and innovations offered by the IoT.

1. As one of the founding members of the Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC), Samsung also advocates for the development of common IoT standards

Just about everyone has heard how the Internet of Things (IoT) will change lives across the globe by making our homes and buildings more efficient, our cars safer, our food supply more stable, and the air people breathe cleaner. In addition, recent study by 451 Group shows that 65 percent of businesses are using IoT to optimize their services and product offerings. But how can companies get the most from IoT to best benefit their business?

ARTIK, Samsung’s integrated Smart IoT platform, was announced in May 2015, and provides fast, secure, interoperable and intelligent products and services to help organizations quickly turn IoT concepts into a reality. The platform uses a family of highly integrated System on Modules (SOMs) to incorporate processing, memory and wireless connectivity.

The advanced ARTIK Cloud service collects, stores and acts upon data from any device or cloud service, giving businesses the opportunity to gain new insights into how their products are being used. These insights can then be utilized to generate new business opportunities.

All of this is secured with leading edge encryption, secure boot, hardened certificate storage and more, and is equipped with a suite of tools and services for a truly end-to-end platform.

A Focus on Ideas

Businesses are eager to add IoT capabilities to their products, but also understand the challenges of designing and building solutions on their own. By providing organizations with an integrated IoT platform, Samsung is helping companies focus on developing great ideas without having to worry as much about the underlying structure.

Faster Product Development, More Growth

Another challenge with delivering complex IoT solutions is the time, costs and risks associated with such projects. The Samsung ARTIK platform makes it easier to build IoT products and alleviates these challenges by unifying hardware, software, cloud, security and partner ecosystems in a single offering.

Samsung continues to build a strong ecosystem of global distributors, service providers and technology solution partners who can help companies get their IoT solutions to market faster.

For example, Samsung ARTIK partnered with Naver to create a new voice-controlled smart home assistant called AMICA. Likewise, at this year’s Korea Electronics Show, FS Studio shared an amazing demonstration of a spaceship toy that can search for, recognize and respond to different objects. The gadget was built with a powerful neural net and runs on ARTIK.

Furthermore, partners such as resin.io, Arduino and Ubuntu, among others, bring powerful tools and capabilities to the ARTIK platform that help to solve real problems that IoT vendors face.

Samsung has also partnered with Arrow and Mujin to distribute ARTIK, adding to its strong distribution partnership with Digi-Key to ensure the platform is available around the globe.

Samsung thinks the future is bright for IoT, and can’t wait to see what you build. Visit https://artik.io to learn more.
