Samsung Electronics today announced that it will update its voice assistant Bixby1 with enhanced AI in home appliances.2 Bixby, which will be upgraded starting from August 27, will have a comprehension ability that better understands complex commands based on natural language, providing easier device control for users.

“Samsung’s home appliances have been developed and are evolving in the way that can elevate the user experience,” said Miyoung Yoo, EVP and Head of Software Development Team of Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “By introducing the upgraded Bixby, we look forward to enhancing consumers’ lives, enabling easier use of their appliances as well as providing a better, more personalized user experience.”

Samsung launched multiple home appliances with AI features earlier this year, such as the Bespoke 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub3 featuring AI Vision Inside,4 Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI with upgraded AI Object Recognition,5 and Bespoke AI Laundry Combo with AI Home.6 Taking another step forward, Samsung aims to create an even richer consumer experience by introducing new features.

Bixby: Better Voice Control for Appliances

The upgraded Bixby enables better voice control through three main capabilities7 — understanding complex commands (Multi-Intent), recalling previous conversations (Multi-Turn) and responding to product-related questions (Device Q&A).8 Samsung is providing the update to five products launched in 2024 first: the Bespoke 4-Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub; Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, Bespoke Slide-in Range; Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI; and Bespoke AI WindFree Gallery Freestanding Air Conditioner.9

First, the upgraded Bixby can understand commands that consist of multiple or unrelated requests in one sentence. Users can control other devices connected by SmartThings10 with the upgraded Bixby as well, so they can express their needs more naturally than before. For example, users can ask the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, “Hi Bixby, what’s the weather like? Start washing and clean the living room” and Bixby will process the command sequentially.11

Second, Bixby is capable of remembering contexts of past conversations,12 allowing users to engage in ongoing dialogues with devices rather than issuing isolated commands. If users say to the Bespoke 4-Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub, “Hi Bixby, tell me what time the family dinner is today” and Bixby responds to it, users can follow up and say, “Then set the washing machine to finish one hour before that.”13

Last but not least, it provides assistance to users when they encounter problems while using appliances or become curious about certain cycles or features. When the screen on the appliance shows an error code, users can turn to Bixby to ask what it means instead of searching through the user manual or contacting the call center. They can ask questions like, “Hi Bixby, I can hear clicking noises in the fridge, why is that?”, and Bixby will provide several answers. Appliances with screens, such as refrigerators with AI Family Hub or the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, will display the response on the screen, while appliances without screens will provide audio responses.

Generative Wallpaper: A Unique Background for Each User’s Family Hub Screen

The refrigerators with Family Hub, launched in Korea and the U.S. after 2022, are also being upgraded with a new feature. A new wallpaper feature called Generative Wallpaper14 allows users to create custom wallpapers.15

Users can choose one theme from seven categories and select a style among six art styles. With these two selected options, the Family Hub creates an image custom to the user. The image can be applied to the cover screen or whiteboard, or also be saved in an album for future use.

Samsung plans to exhibit the Bespoke AI appliances featuring the upgraded Bixby and Generative Wallpaper at IFA 2024, allowing more people to experience and understand how it will enhance the user experience.

Since first launching in 2017, Samsung has evolved Bixby from an intelligent voice assistant for users to streamline tasks into an open, scalable AI platform that is available anywhere, anytime.

Both the Bixby Home screen and Bixby Voice have undergone transformations that have improved usability and helped users get more done with their devices including Samsung smart home appliances, Galaxy smartphones, wearables and tablets. With support for more languages and a suite of new accessibility features, Samsung has enhanced the Bixby experience for millions of consumers across the globe.

Now Samsung is taking one step further with Bixby to improve the user experience and make its features more accessible. Thanks to AI’s continuous evolution and Samsung’s commitment to offering better user experiences for consumers, Bixby has achieved much tighter integration with Samsung Galaxy smartphones, wearables, and tablets as well as Samsung home appliances as a tool to better execute voice commands across all devices. With the latest Bixby update, users can enjoy touch-less control of their Galaxy devices more easily than ever.

Here’s a look at the changes coming to the new Bixby.

A Simplified User Experience

Samsung updated the design language of the new Bixby, bringing it more in line with the user experience found in Samsung One UI. Moving beyond the original blue background, the Bixby Voice app now changes depending on your phone’s display mode. Easy horizontal and vertical scrolling also put a variety of new commands within reach, while performance improvements help to execute users’ commands faster. Improved readability along with the addition of light and dark themes, which bring a more consistent design experience to the Bixby Voice app, are already proving to be crowd-pleasing changes.

Users that participated in the latest Bixby app usage pre-release survey said they found the new version to be brighter, livelier, and more user-friendly than previous versions.

More Content at a Glance

With Bixby’s newest updates, Samsung has unified the app structure to make it easier to find what you are looking for. The latest update combines recommended commands, trending commands, and the Marketplace all in one convenient menu, so you can search for new Bixby capsules and use the voice commands from one place. The simplified structure removes the need to swipe through different menus or cards, allowing you to see the most important information you need with just a glance.

Fewer Interruptions

Whether you are browsing the web or watching a video, you can now use Bixby without interrupting your flow. Rather than taking up the entire screen, Bixby Voice now only takes up the lower third of your screen, so you can issue commands without leaving your current app. That means fewer interruptions on your screen when you’re gaming or using a map to find your destination.

The conversation indicator has also been changed from the Bixby icon to a bar, which grows as you speak to indicate voice recognition for a more dynamic and modern look.

Find the Right Command

Using Bixby feels more personal in the latest update, as the service now offers customized voice command suggestions based on your usage patterns and other devices you have registered with Bixby. With recommendations for a variety of apps and services, the new tailored experience helps you discover more ways to use Bixby and improve your Galaxy experience.

Discovering new ways to use Bixby is also possible by checking the popular voice commands that are trending among other Galaxy users and with hint commands in Bixby Capsules. Tapping Bixby’s main screen will also refresh it, offering a new list of recommended commands to sample from.

Bixby Arrives on Samsung DeX

Productivity has never been easier with Bixby now available on Samsung DeX. Whether you’re working on a presentation or streaming video on a larger screen, Bixby on Samsung DeX makes it easy to open applications or search for content on your computer or a larger monitor.

It sounds like something out of a fairytale: when you head out for the day, your fairy godmother zips around the house, finishing all the housework so you don’t have to. Okay, okay (earmuffs, kids!), fairy godmothers aren’t exactly real, but with Samsung’s AI-enabled and smart home appliances, you’d never know the difference.

Samsung home appliances’ seamless connections are all part of the company’s “Intelligence of Things” vision, which envisions a world in which the devices around us are constantly communicating with one another in ways that simplify our day. To demonstrate how the devices take the work out of housework, we present a typical Sunday in one of these connected homes.

[7 a.m.] “Hi Bixby”

You’ve got a lot to do today, so you wake up early, kick off the covers, and start to map out your day. To check the weather forecast and fine dust level, you could reach for your phone and check a weather app, or switch on the news on your TV. Or, in the true spirit of a lazy weekend, you could do those things faster and easier with Bixby, Samsung Electronics’ convenient intelligence platform, which offers users personalized services powered by natural interactions.

With Bixby, everyday tasks like checking the weather and fine dust level are as easy as uttering a simple voice command. To make their lives easier, Bixby learns users’ usage patterns and frequently used apps, and gets smarter and more useful with time.

[9 a.m.] Laundry Made Simple

Samsung home appliances’ smart features were designed to take the stress out of finishing household chores. To simplify laundry cycles, Samsung introduced Auto Cycle Link1, a clever feature that links compatible washers and dryers so the dryer can automatically select an optimal setting once the wash cycle has ended.

[11 a.m.] An AI-powered Meal Planner

Figuring out what to whip up for lunch has also become simpler thanks to Samsung’s Food AI, which keeps you up to date on what you have in your fridge. The technology understands the preferences of each family member, and recommends appropriate recipes to suit various tastes and diets.

It also makes it easier to keep tabs on ingredients. Utilizing image-recognition technology, which detects the names of the items you have in your fridge, it allows you to easily monitor the freshness of various ingredients. It also enables you to search for recipes for dishes that you can prepare with the ingredients you have, and lets you shop online for any additional ingredients that you might need.

[1:30 p.m.] A Kitchen That Prepares Itself

Once the user selects a recipe, Samsung’s Food AI will preset their appliances accordingly so they can focus on preparing a delicious meal. Running a kitchen in which your appliances prepare themselves may make you feel like you’re cooking with a team of sous-chefs by your side!

The hood and cooktop’s pairing feature offers a simple way to keep the air in the kitchen fresh. The hood automatically activates when any of the cooktop’s burners are turned on, and switches off when the burners are turned off. When you need some fresh air, your air purifier’s window-checking feature2 springs into action, switching the air purifier off when the window is open, and turning it back on when the window is closed.

[3 p.m.] Self-monitoring Appliances

While it’s true that appliances need to be checked regularly to ensure that they’re performing efficiently, it’s not always easy to remember to do so. That’s where Samsung’s AI Homecare Manager comes in. The technology monitors the status and usage patterns of various appliances, and notifies users of appropriate actions to take. Not only does it offer users simple steps for handling any issues that may arise with their appliances, it also notifies them when it’s time to replace items like filters, and provides links to streamline purchases.

Samsung home appliances can also offer users insights to help them better manage electricity usage via SmartThings Energy Control, an easy-to-use, app-controlled smart meter service. This intuitive feature encourages efficient energy usage by allowing you to compare your monthly electricity usage with other users using the same appliances.

[6 p.m.] You’re Welcomed Back to a Home That’s Set Just the Way You Like It

‘Welcome Care’ is Samsung’s GPS-enabled home-management feature. When the user is almost home, AI technology measures the air quality in the house. If the air quality is ‘bad’ or worse, it sends the user a notification that offers them the option to activate the air purifier.

This feature also applies to air conditioners. When enabled, once the user gets within a certain radius of their home, they’ll receive a notification asking them whether they’d like to turn the air conditioner on, or leave it off. This also applies when the user leaves home. So no more worrying about whether you forgot to turn the AC off before leaving the house.

[9 p.m.] An Air Conditioner That Optimizes Temperature by Room

A single house can contain multiple spaces that require different environments. Samsung’s Pleasant AI service automatically regulates air conditioner settings to maintain an optimal temperature in each room, ensuring users’ comfort. Air conditioner usage data is analyzed as time goes by, making the feature more and more reliable.

[3 a.m.] While You Sleep, Your Devices’ AI Ensures That You Get a Good Night’s Rest

Samsung devices’ smart services work nonstop, even after you’ve gone to bed. For example, regardless of whether it’s been switched on or off, the air purifier keeps measuring air quality throughout the night, and automatically turns on when it detects that the air is ‘bad’ or worse. Before going to bed, you can also ask Bixby to do things like play a particular playlist that helps you fall asleep, or show you your schedule for the next day.

1 Availability may vary depending on region and products.

2 The window should be connected to Smart Things via a multi-purpose sensor. Whether or not the window is equipped with this sensor differs according to region.

Samsung demonstrates how enhancements to the Bixby Developer Studio, including new Bixby Templates and Bixby Views, will streamline the development of capsules that work across Bixby’s ever-growing ecosystem of devices.

In addition to unveiling a new Rules API that will spur the creation of more automated smart home experiences, Samsung introduced a SmartThings Device SDK beta program – set to launch early next year – that will help third-party manufacturers build SmartThings-supported devices.

But Wait, There’s More!

At the end of the day, SDC is about inspiring people to pursue meaningful innovation. Which is why those visiting the conference are also exposed to projects and initiatives that are making a tangible difference in the world, like the Samsung Global Goals app.

Created to support the achievement of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, the educational and donation-based mobile app offers a simple way for the Galaxy community to support the causes they care about. To help maximize the app’s impact, Samsung has announced that it will match proceeds generated through the app and donate the same amount.1

That’s all for now, but there’s plenty more to come as SDC19 enters its second day. For more information on the topics and innovations being discussed at the event, be sure to check out Samsung Newsroom’s ongoing coverage.

Samsung kicked off last year’s SDC by announcing ambitious plans for its intelligent assistant, Bixby. The goal: build Bixby into an open and scalable AI platform that’s available virtually everywhere users need it, offering seamless connected living experiences across more regions, languages and devices.

Since that announcement, Bixby has expanded to a variety of products, including smartphones, wearables, tablets, smart TVs, Family Hub refrigerators and more, as well as SmartThings-connected devices. Over the last year, Samsung has opened the door for developers to create their own Bixby capsules with the introduction of the Bixby Developer Studio, and made it easy for users to download those services with the launch of the Bixby Marketplace in June.

The tools and enhancements introduced at SDC19 will make developing capsules easier, and offer developers opportunities to reach an expansive user base across Samsung’s device portfolio. For example, with the Bixby Developer Studio’s new Bixby Templates, rather than building a capsule’s code and model manually from scratch, developers can simply choose from a variety of templates designed to handle many situations – including offering a fact of the day or quiz, telling jokes, or playing a podcast.

Not only are capsules easier to create, they’re also quick and easy to find thanks to new Natural Language Categories. This means that now, when developers register their capsules under specific categories, if a user makes a request, Bixby will be able to search and suggest related capsules that fall under that category. It also means that users can call up capsules using natural language, rather than invoking the capsule’s specific name. This not only offers users a more convenient experience, it also makes it easier for developers’ capsules to be discovered and used.

To kickstart the creation of more capsules, the Bixby Developer Studio includes a new Bixby Views function, which enables developers to create capsules that feature consistent user interface designs across Bixby-enabled smartphones, TVs, tablets, smartwatches, refrigerators and more. Samsung has also announced that beginning in 2020, the Bixby Marketplace will expand to devices beyond smartphones. Interested developers can get a head start on developing for upcoming Bixby-enabled devices by using Bixby Views to start building seamless multi-device experiences.

In addition to hosting SDC, throughout the year, Samsung organizes workshops and sessions at locations around the world that offer developers valuable opportunities to hone their skills, gain exposure, and win prizes. Included among these are the Bixby DevJam competition and the Bixby Premier Developer Program. The former offers developers prizes for exceptionally innovative capsule creations, while the latter offers them first-class technical support, devices for testing and iterating capsules, and Bixby Marketplace exposure.

Check out the infographic below to trace Bixby’s incredible journey, and discover how the platform is helping developers add useful and personalized intelligence to more services and devices.

The Galaxy Note10 and Galaxy Note10+ are packed with powerful innovations designed to help users take their mobile experience to the next level.

To help them get the most out of these convenient features, Samsung Newsroom has compiled a list of ten functions and settings users should consider when setting up their new device. Whether you’re new to the Note series or you’re a long-term fan who’s just upgraded to the latest edition, the features outlined below will help you customize your phone in ways that work for you.

1. Customize Air Actions

As you may have read in our recent in-depth article, the Galaxy Note10’s new S Pen Air actions transform the Note series’ signature tool into a magic wand for controlling your device. The gesture-based controls are completely customizable, which means you can specify exactly which functions you’d like them to trigger within specific apps – such as the Camera, Gallery and Samsung Notes.

For example, using the S Pen to trace a clockwise circle in the Camera app will, by default, trigger the camera to zoom into the frame. However, you can also customize this gesture to change camera modes, switch cameras, zoom out and more, if any of those functions would be more comfortable for you.

You can also specify which frequently used app or feature you’d like to launch when you press and hold the S Pen’s button. This saves users time by making it easier for them to access the functions they need.

2. Adjust Your Side Key Settings

The Galaxy Note10’s sleek and slim design includes an all-new multifunctional key located beneath the volume rocker on the devices’ left-hand side. A double press allows you to instantly open the camera, Bixby or a frequently used app of your choosing, while a press and hold will wake Bixby or pull up the power off menu.

Speaking of, the Galaxy Note10 also introduces more ways for users to power down their device. Now, in addition to pulling up the power off menu with a press and hold of the side key, users can easily turn off their phone by (1) tapping on the power icon integrated into the Quick Panel, (2) pressing and holding the side and volume down keys, or (3) asking Bixby to do it directly.

The side key’s settings can be accessed by swiping down on the Quick Panel, tapping the power icon and selecting ‘Side key settings,’ or by pressing and holding the side key itself.

3. Pick Your Favorite Pens

The Galaxy Note10’s enhanced Samsung Notes app makes it easier for users to get down to work by allowing them to save their favorite pens in an instantly accessible tab.

Once users open Samsung Notes and tap on the scribble icon at the top, they’ll see an icon of a pen marked with a golden star in the bottom left corner of the screen. Tapping that icon will pull up a handy tab containing slots to save up to nine unique pens. With six types of pens, an array of thickness options, and dozens of colors available, it’s easy to find and save the right pen for the job.

Once they’re saved, all it takes to pull up the pen you need when composing a note is a press of the S Pen’s button. Each subsequent press will switch to another favorite pen in your collection.

4. Step Up Your Screen Recordings

The Galaxy Note10’s new Screen recorder not only makes it easy to record what’s on your screen, but also features a picture-in-picture function that allows users, such as vloggers and gamers, to use the front camera to add reactions and commentary to their videos.

To start a recording, simply pull down the Quick Panel and tap on the Screen recorder icon. Once the recording starts, you’ll see icons in the top right corner to enable real-time S Pen annotation, and activate the front camera for the picture-in-picture function.

If you’d like to capture your voice while recording a picture-in-picture video, pull up the feature’s settings by pressing and holding ‘Screen recorder’ in the Quick Panel. There, you’ll find options to (1) record no sound, (2) record media sounds, and (3) record ‘media sounds and mic.’ The settings also allow you to specify precisely how large you would like your picture-in-picture video to be, and select a preferred video quality.

5. Link to Windows

To help users work more comfortably and efficiently, the Galaxy Note10 features Link to Windows integrated directly into its Quick Panel. Now, rather than bouncing from one screen to the other, users can easily connect their Galaxy Note10 to their Windows 10-based PC and mirror their phone’s screen, send and receive messages,1 and view notifications – as well as up to 25 recent photos – directly from their computer.

Link to Windows can be launched via the Quick Panel or by accessing Settings > Advanced features. Once the user logs in to their Microsoft account, the Galaxy Note10 automatically links to their PC. It’s as simple as that.

6. Connect to Samsung DeX for PC

The Galaxy Note10 takes multitasking to the next level by making Samsung DeX2 even easier to use. Now, all it takes to expand your mobile experience to your Windows PC or Mac is a simple USB cable.

Getting started is easy: simply access Samsung DeX’s official website on your PC or Mac to download and launch the Samsung DeX for PC installer, and connect your smartphone to your computer. Once everything’s set up, the program will automatically launch Samsung DeX via a window on your computer’s screen.

From there, you’ll be able to easily drag and drop files between your smartphone and PC, and enjoy more space to manage your go-to apps. In addition, even when it’s connected to your PC, your smartphone can still be used to make phone calls, send messages, and surf the internet.

7. Display Battery Percentage

These days, we’re constantly working, connecting and creating on our mobile devices, which is why we like to keep a close eye on our smartphone’s battery level.

The Galaxy Note10’s default setting is to display battery level via a simple icon on the right side of the status bar. However, users who would like to know exactly how much power they have left can access Settings > Notifications > Status bar, where they’ll find options to display the exact battery percentage, and specify how many notification icons they’d like to see at the top of their screen.

The Galaxy Note10 also features AI software that optimizes battery usage based on how you use your device. To manage your device’s battery optimization, head to Settings > Device care > Battery > Power mode. There you’ll find various power modes for increasing performance and extending battery life, as well as an ‘Adaptive power saving’ function, which enables your Galaxy Note10’s AI to automatically adjust the power mode based on your usage patterns to save power when it’s not needed.

8. Enable Bixby Routines

What if your smartphone were intelligent enough to optimize settings based on your daily routine – switching to Wi-Fi as soon as you got home, and automatically dimming the screen and activating its blue light filter to protect your eyes before you went to bed?

Bixby Routines on the Galaxy Note10 makes all that and more possible. The function utilizes machine learning to learn how you use your phone throughout the day, and recommends personalized routines that can streamline tasks to help you save more time.

The Galaxy Note10 features 14 preset Bixby Routines right out of the box, including ‘Good morning,’ ‘Work,’ ‘Home,’ ‘Before bed’ and ‘Driving.’ Best of all, creating your own Bixby Routines couldn’t be easier. Simply tap on the plus sign at the top of the menu to create a routine that works for you.

9. Rearranging Camera Modes

Because speed can be key when it comes to capturing incredible photos, the Galaxy Note10 allows you to rearrange the order of its camera modes so your most frequently used options come up first. The camera launches on Photo mode by default, and lets you designate the order of the camera modes to the left and right of Photo mode to make it easy to navigate to the mode you need.

If, for example, you like to take pictures of your food, place Food mode immediately before or after Photo. If you tend to use other modes more often than the basic Photo mode, tap on ‘Keep using last mode’ under the ‘Camera modes’ settings to enable the camera to launch on the last mode you used.

10. Quickly Access Brightness Settings

Sometimes – when watching a movie at a theater, for example – we’d like to be able to adjust our smartphone’s brightness quickly and easily. If you find yourself in these situations quite often, consider enabling the Galaxy Note10’s brightness control to be displayed above the notification panel.

To do so, simply swipe down on the Quick Panel, tap on the arrow to the right of the brightness control, and tap on ‘Show control on top.’ The display’s brightness settings also include an ‘Adaptive brightness’ function that allows the Galaxy Note10 to keep track of your brightness adjustments and apply them automatically when you use your device under similar lighting conditions.

1 Limited to 1,000 most recent messages.

The Bixby Marketplace is a one-stop shop for users to browse and add a wide range of services (known as capsules) to enhance their Bixby experience.

This new platform is now open to users in U.S. and Korea. The Bixby Marketplace’s official launch lays the foundation for an open ecosystem of useful services that developers will continuously enrich, and users will be able to make their mobile experience more personal and intuitive.

The key to Bixby’s convenience is simple: customization. Samsung’s intelligence platform is designed to learn what you like to do, and then work with your favorite apps and services to help you get more done—faster.

The Bixby Marketplace takes these customized experiences to the next level by offering easy access to a wide range of capsules that make Bixby more powerful, making it easier for users to tailor Bixby to suit their needs. The Marketplace includes a variety of convenience-enhancing capsules such as Google Maps, Spotify, iHeartRadio, NPR, Yelp and more.

How It Works

Users access the Bixby Marketplace from the Bixby main page. Once the user launches the Bixby main page by pressing the Bixby key, they swipe left to get to the Bixby Marketplace. Capsules are organized by categories such as Productivity, Business and Finance, Sports, Shopping, etc.

Searching by capsule name, developer or keyword makes it easy to find the capsules you need, while curated staff picks and user reviews highlight capsules that users will find particularly useful. Capsules can be added with a single tap of a button, and users can also rate and review capsules to ensure the highest quality Bixby capsules are the most visible to users in the Bixby Marketplace.

To add even more customization, users can set a capsule as the “preferred capsule” for certain types of requests. For example, if a user says “Get me a ride to San Francisco airport”, Bixby will prompt the user to pick one of the supported Rideshare capsules. Users will have the option to set their favorite provider as their preferred Rideshare capsule. Once that is set, any Rideshare request would automatically go to the user’s preferred provider, even if the user does not mention the capsule name. The ability for users to customize their own personal Bixby experience allows them to easily incorporate a wide range of capsules into their everyday lives.

What’s Next?

Samsung will continue to improve the Bixby platform and evolve the Bixby Marketplace to support developer needs and enhance the experience for all our users. Developers will continue to add more capsules to the Bixby Marketplace over the next few months. Samsung plans to share more exciting updates at Samsung Developer Conference 2019 (SDC19) which will be held on October 29–30 in San Jose, California. Stay tuned!

Bixby is an intelligent interface that makes interacting with your device, services and apps more seamless and instinctive. Bixby’s deep integration, contextual awareness and newly launched U.S. English voice support offer an assistant unlike any other – one that’s intelligent enough to learn your habits, and even your manner of speaking, and respond accordingly.

But how exactly does Bixby work, and how can you ensure that you’re getting the most out of it? Here are some common questions and answers to help you get better acquainted with the intuitive interface.

Q. How did Bixby get its name?

We decided to call our new interface Bixby because we found the name to be playful, smart and gender neutral; perfect for someone who is bold and in the know.

Q. How do I activate Bixby Voice?

You can activate Bixby by saying “Hi, Bixby,” or by either pressing or holding its dedicated button (located under the volume controls of your compatible device) and dictating your request.1

Q. Does Bixby get smarter the more I use it?

Yes, it does. Thanks to Bixby’s iterative deep learning technology, the more you use the interface, the smarter it gets.

For example, whenever you’re not satisfied with its response, Bixby will work with you to learn how to better serve your needs. Each time Bixby responds to a command, it presents you with the option to “Teach me” – to select a more appropriate response from a list of similar commands. The next time you make that request, Bixby will remember exactly what you wanted it to do.

Q. What can I do to make sure that Bixby Voice hears me clearly?

Bixby is optimized to detect voice commands when users are 15 to 20 centimeters (5.9 to 7.9 inches) away from their device. If you’re too close or too far, it can affect the voice recognition technology’s accuracy. For best results, speak clearly and at a volume comparable to normal conversation levels.

Q. Do I need to be in a quiet area in order for Bixby Voice to hear me?

Bixby works best in environments where your voice may be clearly heard. That being said, Bixby’s deep learning technology allows the interface to distinguish your voice commands from ambient noise, even when you’re listening to music, by carefully analyzing sound frequencies.

When in particularly loud environments, you can activate Bixby Voice using your earphones’ play/pause button and microphone.

Q. What languages and dialects does Bixby understand?

Bixby Voice is currently available in Korea and the U.S., and supports commands in Korean and U.S. English. Users in the U.S. and Korea can switch between Korean and English by adjusting Bixby’s language settings.

Bixby’s understanding of natural language is what allows it to learn dialects. We’ve taught Bixby various dialects’ distinct intonations, vocabulary and grammatical structures, and we’re currently working on providing support for more.

Q. What are Quick Commands?

Bixby’s Quick Commands allow you to issue multi-step, complicated requests with convenient keywords.

With Quick Commands, users can replace a long request, such as “Track my run using the Samsung Health app,” with a short, simple command, such as “Run.” These shortcuts allow you to interact more seamlessly with your phone. Quick Commands may be accessed under Bixby Home’s “My Bixby” menu.

Q. Will using Bixby eat up my mobile data, and is it possible to use it overseas?

Bixby only utilizes your mobile data when listening to a command, not before or after. As a result, the length of the command ultimately determines the amount of mobile data used.

If Bixby Voice is activated and you’re using a licensed SIM card, it’s possible to use the interface even when you’re overseas.2
Actual range of use may vary depending on the apps you’re using.

Q. What is Bixby Vision, and how does it work?

Bixby Vision was designed to provide you with a deeper understanding of what you’re looking at, allowing you to use your camera to easily scan and search for relevant information on the objects and places around you.

Bixby Vision offers information on everything from purchasing options for a particular product to details on your current location and even the bottle of wine you’re enjoying. It is also capable of scanning business cards and performing convenient translations.

After scanning an object, users can use Bixby Vision’s image search3
function to locate it online. Once Bixby has identified the object, it will automatically pull up related images on Pinterest.4

Bixby Vision works best in bright environments, and when you hold your camera steady. The screen should not be upside down, and if the object in focus is a product, it should be captured from the front to aid identification.

Q. Who are some of Bixby Vision’s current retail partners?

We’ve forged partnerships with popular online shopping platforms in each region to allow consumers to enjoy a much more convenient shopping experience with Bixby. These partners include Amazon in North America, Japan and several major markets across Europe, as well as Taobao in China and Samsung Pay Shopping in Korea.

Q. What languages can Bixby Vision translate?

Bixby Vision’s advanced OCR (object character recognition) technology allows it to scan and recognize a total of 40 languages. These languages can then be interpreted into 104 different dialects via Google’s powerful translation database.4

Q. How is Reminder different from my device’s clock or calendar app?

Reminder lets users do much more than simply log an appointment or create an alarm.

The function utilizes Bixby’s voice support and contextual awareness to allow users to set smart reminders for specified times, places or circumstances.

Reminder is also integrated into other apps. You can use Reminder to save webpage URLs in the Samsung Internet app, as well as messages that you’d like to get back to later in the Messages app. You can also pin reminders to your device’s Always On Display to make them visible at all times, and access your collected reminders via your device’s edge panel.

Q. What is Bixby Home, and how does it cater to users’ individual needs?

Bixby Home serves as a gateway to Bixby’s various functions and presents your most contextually relevant apps and services on a single screen, so the content you care about is just a swipe away.

Bixby learns your routine and serves up the information you need when you need it. It looks for patterns in your app usage to predict what you might be looking for, and when you’re most likely to look for it. The more you use your smartphone, the more relevant Bixby’s content suggestions will become.

Bixby Home will automatically populate based on your actions, but you can also customize the experience to best suit your needs. You also have the options to pin your favorite cards to the top of your Home page for easy reference, and hide any cards that you no longer wish to see.

Q. Is my personal data safe with Bixby?

Bixby stores users’ personal data in accordance with stringent security procedures.

Users may choose to delete data that Bixby saves from Bixby’s settings at any time. Bixby only collects data necessary to improve or personalize your experience, and ensures that your personal information is never transmitted.

1Voice wake-up must be activated in order to use this feature

2Language support is currently limited to Korean and U.S. English, and the user’s device must be Bixby-compatible. App and service compatibility may vary.
