Building on this trust, Samsung is leading the way in designing AI-enabled products that enhance consumers’ lives, with the cutting-edge Samsung Care team ready to assist when the unexpected happens.

Samsung Care continuously invests in ways to give customers choices and easy options for high-quality, convenient care on their terms. Paving the way in next-generation care, Samsung has continued to invest in AI-powered tools to help Care experts resolve issues even faster. Interactive Voice Response (IVR) is one such tool, using AI12 to identify the customer’s intent, product, and issue, ensuring they are routed to the right agent with valuable insights before the call even begins. IVR can also text customers the two nearest Walk-In Service or Authorized Repair Centers based on their zip code and send a link to book an appointment, making the process even smoother.

With connected solutions for home appliances, Samsung makes proactive and preventative care simple and accessible. For example, consumers can use the Home Care service in the SmartThings app, which uses AI to automatically detect and troubleshoot issues. If an error code appears, customers receive an alert with step-by-step instructions for a quick home fix. If further assistance is needed, they can chat with a care professional, schedule a repair with a Samsung-certified technician, or even order replacement parts, like water filters, directly through the app.

Today the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presented Samsung with the rare ENERGY STAR Corporate Commitment Award for the company’s longstanding and multifaceted commitment to demonstrating leadership and partnership with ENERGY STAR and mitigating climate change. Addressing the climate crisis requires organizations to take holistic approaches, and this rare and prestigious award was created to recognize the few companies whose cumulative and superior achievements in energy efficiency span the breadth of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program. In 2021, Samsung is the only company to win the distinction, which was last granted nine years ago.

The Corporate Commitment Award builds on a strong and mutually beneficial relationship between Samsung and the EPA ENERGY STAR program – a relationship that has led Samsung to receive eight Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence awards since 2013. “Samsung is committed to helping mitigate climate change through our products, practices, and operations, especially in the area of energy efficiency,” said KS Choi, President and CEO, Samsung Electronics North America. “We are extremely honored to receive this rare and prestigious award and commit to continuing to raise the bar on energy efficiency as an important part of tackling climate change.”

Through continuous efficiency improvements and changes in distribution, manufacturing, repair and recycling, Samsung is reducing the impact of the devices that customers love and demand. Since 2009, Samsung product efficiency improvements have enabled customers to avoid an estimated 270 million metric tons of CO2 emissions through the use of Samsung products. Those reductions are more than double the amount of GHG emissions that were required to manufacture those products over the same time period. In 2020, Samsung had 303 ENERGY STAR base models, including 100% of tablets, front-load washers and dishwashers, 86% of refrigerators, 78% of top-load washers and 54% of dryers that are ENERGY STAR certified.* Moreover, Samsung advances energy efficiency through innovative cutting-edge products such as our next-generation refrigeration products, which earned the Emerging Technology Award for Advanced Adaptive Compressors in 2020.

Samsung is also committed to reducing the climate impact of its operations and supply chain. Following through on a commitment made in 2018, Samsung uses 100% renewable energy to power its worksites in the US, China and Europe. As a result, Samsung ranks among the top in EPA’s Green Power Partnership program. Furthermore, Samsung partnered with EPA in contributing to the development of the innovative new ENERGY STAR Tenant Space program for energy management improvements by tenants in leased building space, driving the industry forward on efficiency. Samsung 837, the Global Marketing Center for Excellence in New York City, the Samsung Solutions Center in Washington DC, the customer contact center in Simpsonville, SC and Samsung locations in Plano, TX are all ENERGY STAR or Tenant Space recognized. This partnership demonstrates that we are committed to reducing the environmental footprint of our office spaces in addition to our products.

“We are beyond thrilled to receive this tremendous honor from the EPA,” said Mark Newton, Head of Corporate Sustainability for Samsung Electronics America. “We will continue to advance our sustainability efforts across the country as it is more important than ever to support initiatives that mitigate climate change and commit to business practices that will ensure a healthy future for all to enjoy.”

“ENERGY STAR award-winning partners are showing the world that delivering real climate solutions makes good business sense and promotes job growth,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. “Many of them have been doing it for years, inspiring all of us who are committed to tackling the climate crisis and leading the way to a clean energy economy.”

While the ENERGY STAR Corporate Commitment award is a cumulative recognition of a company’s accomplishments, it is also a call to action – driving the awardee to keep pushing forward and setting a benchmark for other industry players to meet. Samsung is committed to continuing its impactful partnership with the EPA and ENERGY STAR in the years to come and looks forward to collaborating with industry peers and competitors to effect change through energy efficiency and mitigate the threat of climate change.

Samsung Electronics America is proud to announce it has received the 2020 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence Award for continued leadership and superior contributions to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR program. The award recognizes EPA partner businesses and organizations in good standing that demonstrate superior leadership, innovation, and commitment to environmental protection through energy efficiency and ENERGY STAR.

This is Samsung’s 12th Partner of the Year recognition and 7th time achieving the Sustained Excellence Award for its environmental stewardship exhibited through producing energy-efficient appliances and technology as well as for engaging customers, employees and students about the value of environmental protection and energy savings. For Samsung, ENERGY STAR is also a symbol of economic development and investment in the U.S. manufacturing base. At the state-of-the-art facility in Newberry, SC, every washer produced is ENERGY STAR-certified. This includes innovative front load and top load machines that not only save energy but deliver time savings, increased capacity, stronger cleaning performance and stylish design.

“Samsung takes its responsibility to care for our communities and environment seriously and values our partnership with ENERGY STAR,” said Shane Higby, Vice President for Home Appliance Product Marketing at Samsung Electronics America. “While many of the company’s efforts around energy efficiency are focused on manufacturing of home appliances, our work also extends to product training efforts as well as investments in environmental education initiatives. Samsung remains committed to energy efficiency innovation while minimizing our environmental impact.”

As of 2019, 33 of Samsung’s products were designated by the EPA as Most Efficient. Including savings driven by ENERGY STAR certification, overall product efficiency improvements have helped our customers avoid an estimated 243 million tons of CO2 emissions through the use of Samsung products since 2009.

In 2016, Samsung also won the ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award for Innovative Refrigerant Systems and in 2013, Samsung won the ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award for Advanced Clothes Dryers.

“I salute the 2020 ENERGY STAR award winners,” said Anne Idsal, EPA Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation. “These leaders demonstrate how energy efficiency drives economic competitiveness in tandem with environmental protection.”

The highest honor among ENERGY STAR awards is the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year—Sustained Excellence Award. EPA presents the Sustained Excellence Award to partners that have already received ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year recognition for a minimum of two consecutive years and have gone above and beyond the criteria needed to qualify for recognition. Winners hail from small, family-owned businesses to Fortune 500 organizations—representing energy-efficient products, services, new homes, and buildings in the commercial, industrial, and public sectors.

These schools were chosen as the three national grand prize winners after pitching their projects to a panel of judges in New York City. These students and teachers succeeded through intense rounds of the contest, winning hundreds of thousands in technology along the way. First selected as one of 255 state finalists (5 per state) in November, then one of 51 state winners (including Washington, D.C.) in December, and then one of 10 national finalists in March, these three schools ultimately progressed to achieve the title of 2018 national grand prize winners.

“Each year that passes with the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest, we are more impressed and awe-struck with the creative, strategic talent that our students and teachers possess,” said Ann Woo, Senior Director of Corporate Citizenship, Samsung Electronics America. “Our hope has always been to inspire confidence in today’s youth and provide the tools they need to pursue a career in STEAM. The national winners this year are testament to the possibility and promise of the next generation to answer some of today’s real issues. We are proud to bring awareness to their inspiring work.”

The Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest was created in 2010 to encourage innovation while addressing the technology gap in classrooms across the country. Each year, the competition inspires more active, hands-on teaching and learning among schools nationwide. Since 2001, Samsung has provided more than $60 million in technology to public schools in the United States. Over the past eight years, Samsung has received more than 17,000 entries for the competition, empowering youth to problem-solve and create with the support of their teachers, peers, schools and communities at-large.

The three national winners will receive $150,000* in Samsung technology products such as LED TVs, laptops and tablets for use in the classroom. This year’s winners include:

Ashland Middle School in Ashland, Ky.

Because local first responders called to the scene of a drug overdose are only armed with rubber gloves and tongs, the students of Ashland Middle School developed a solution to safely pick up and dispose of hypodermic needles. The students created a device that could be used by first responders and local authorities to pick up dangerous used needles and other drug paraphernalia.

“Technology is a great tool, but if you’re not using it to help people, it’s just a toy,” said Isaac Campbell, a student from the Ashland Middle School team.

Reported concussions reached upwards of 3 million in 2017, and it’s estimated that half of all concussions are unreported or undetected. After a classmate suffered a concussion during football season last year, students at Cavallini Middle school developed sensors to be worn on football helmets to accurately and quickly identify potential concussions and help prevent any further brain damage through early detection.

“Our sensor, powered by a lithium-ion battery, uses two accelerometers along with a processor to calculate concussions through hits to the body. This data is collected in the app and sent to the coach on the sidelines,” explained Jake Carlin, a student from the Cavallini Middle School team.

Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Winston-Salem, N.C.

After learning that strong summer storms are the primary cause of flooding in the U.S., Thomas Jefferson Middle School students developed a water sensor system that deploys water barriers when rising water levels reach 6 inches.

“Our Assistant Fire Chief let us know that, sadly, many communities do not have enough barriers to cover their flood prone zones, so they have to send out first responders to close streets when they should be out saving lives,” said Jake Gruver, a student from the Thomas Jefferson Middle School team.

Once the barriers are deployed, the system uses Wi-Fi to send a signal to emergency personnel. The information is then sent to the mobile map app, Waze, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation to alert drivers of the conditions.

Last year, a precocious Turkish boy named Efe Gundeger used his head to come up with an ingenious way for others to protect theirs. Having noticed that far too many motorcyclists in his country were riding without helmets, Efe resolved to do something about it. After hatching an idea for a device that would address this pressing issue, he entered a competition that could help him bring his idea to fruition.

Efe’s idea, which he calls ‘Motokask-Motoheadguard,’ promotes road safety by placing a sensor in motorcyclists’ helmets that communicates with a control mechanism attached to their vehicle. When a rider puts on their helmet, a wireless signal is sent to this mechanism, which then allows the engine to start. If the rider attempts to ride without their helmet, the engine does not run.

The competition that provided a platform for Efe to showcase his innovation, Samsung Future Inventors, was a collaboration between Samsung Electronics Turkey and the Creative Children’s Association, under the umbrella of Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow initiative.

Nurturing Solutions for Tomorrow’s Problems

Just as its name implies, Solve for Tomorrow was established to encourage bright young minds around the world to come up with fresh solutions to pressing problems. With contests in countries around the globe, the initiative challenges students like Efe to dream up innovative ways to improve the world around them. The competitions’ ultimate goals are to enrich communities in need with meaningful innovations, and to nurture these students’ growth, confidence and ingenuity.

In 2016, a total of 18 open competitions were hosted in as many countries, including the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Mexico, China and Turkey.

The competitions award the most exceptional innovations. For coming up with a clever way to prevent road accidents, Efe earned his contest’s top prize. After receiving his award, Efe described how participating in the competition had inspired him to keep pursuing scientific projects and inventing new ways to help others.

See how Solve for Tomorrow competitions around the globe are helping students like Efe realize their creative ideas and make a difference in their community.

Building a Bridge to Make Dreams Come True

This past March, Samsung China organized a Solve for Tomorrow competition with the goal of making it easier for students in a mountainous region of Zunyi to get to school safely.

The contest challenged participants to design a model of a functional load-bearing bridge that could be used to construct a real one. After a winning design was selected, volunteers worked together to build the structure, which they dubbed the ‘Dream-Weaving Bridge’.

Along with lending a hand in the bridge’s construction, Samsung China staff donated science books and other educational resources to the rural school. Upon finishing the project, volunteers and contest participants walked away with a well-earned sense of accomplishment, as their efforts had made it easier for students to study science and pursue their educational dreams.

As Solve for Tomorrow participant Lü Xiaobo expressed afterward, “After helping to build the Dream-Weaving Bridge, and having seen the children’s smiles, I now see my life’s purpose more clearly, and will work hard to promote the study of science in the future.”

Promoting STEAM in the USA

In April, high school students from across America gathered in Washington, D.C. for the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest – a competition that challenged students in grades 6 through 12 to come up with STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) solutions to real-world problems.

The students in attendance at the National Union Building represented the contest’s 10 finalist schools. Groups took to the stage before a panel of judges to pitch their unique projects, which spanned from a vending machine that supplies free hygiene products to the homeless, to a robotic car seat that detects when a child is left in a hot vehicle and alerts their parents.

The contest’s three winning schools hailed from Arizona, Nebraska and New York. Their respective award-winning projects included a low-cost wildlife detection system to alert drivers of animals crossing the road, a drone-powered spraying system to target weeds and reduce the use of chemicals on crops, and an app that allows restaurants to donate food that might otherwise have gone to waste to provide after-school meals for students in need.

By promoting the study of sciences and helping the next generation make a difference in their community, Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow program wholly embodies its guiding philosophy of inspiring the world and creating the future.

Samsung Electronics America, Inc. and Verizon today announced they have completed deployment of 5G systems in five U.S. cities in preparation to begin customer trials of 5G technology. The customer trials, beginning in April, will deliver fixed wireless access to customers through 5G connectivity in order to gauge user experiences, evaluate the performance of 5G technologies, and help streamline the delivery of mmWave 5G across various environments.

The 5G trials involve innovative network systems, including the use of 28GHz millimeter wave spectrum and advanced beam-forming antenna technology. Samsung’s 5G Access Units, installed throughout a city’s business and residential neighborhoods, will link radio signals to a virtualized core network that is set up within Verizon’s data centers. Samsung’s next-generation core solution is software-driven and designed on a scalable platform to accommodate operator needs.

In pre-commercial testing started from early December last year, the 5G system demonstrated multi-gigabit throughputs at radio distances of up to 1,500 feet (500 meters) across each of the different environments selected for the customer trials. The Samsung 5G system is designed to be upgradable to support 3GPP standards for New Radio and Next-Generation Core, once available.

Samsung and Verizon 5G customer trials will begin in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Texas and Washington, D.C., with a fifth location in Michigan starting trials later in Q2 2017. The locations represent varying terrain, neighborhood layouts and population density. Joint trials will incorporate Samsung’s pre-commercial 5G solution featuring a CPE(Customer Premise Equipment), window antenna as well as its 5G radio and core solutions. Verizon will include fixed wireless network service that provides wireless Internet access and Voice over IP (VoIP) calling.

“We are excited to deliver the first end-to-end 5G connectivity in the United States with Verizon,” stated Youngky Kim, President and Head of Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “This represents a major leap forward in offering 5G fixed wireless access to consumers. The 5G challenges we will address, and the customer feedback we receive will help lay the foundation for future business models and customer applications.”

“We are pleased about the progress made with partners like Samsung on advancing 5G technology commercially,” said Roger Gurnani, Executive Vice President and Chief Information and Technology Architect, Verizon. “Delivering 5G to these pilot customers are an important step in assessing the business model and customer experience for delivering wireless broadband via 5G. Samsung’s early and extensive development in 5G has been very valuable in contributing to Verizon’s 5G Technology Forum progress.”

Samsung network equipment and devices offer a pathway to meeting ever-growing consumer demand for data in an emerging 5G world. 5G technology is expected to drive the next wave of mobile application development and the Internet of Things (IoT), connecting billions of devices and accelerating low latency gigabit speeds for richer experiences. Samsung holds a host of essential patents related to the new 5G standards. In its continued commitment to 5G technology, Samsung recently announced the commercial readiness of its 5G integrated chipset, which will enable operators like Verizon to deploy high-efficiency, low cost radios in a compact form factor and overcome high-band spectrum challenges.

Samsung Electronics America (SEA) has always sought to foster a culture of innovation and social responsibility throughout our many offices across the United States. Creating unrivaled experiences and building lasting relationships with our consumers is our top priority. Through these efforts, Samsung has been listed among the top three most reputable companies in the U.S., according to this year’s Reputation Institute (RI) survey.

This year’s survey also designates Samsung as the No.1 company in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) category for the strides we made in aligning our business and social investment values. The annual survey gauges how the world’s most well-regarded companies fare in the eyes of consumers.

Miller Street Elementary School students in Newark, New Jersey, get excited about engineering and computer science at emPOWER Tomorrow, Samsung’s after-school program for fourth- and fifth-grade girls.

According to this year’s survey, Samsung has experienced a “meteoric” rise in how the public views us based on a few key factors such as:

Our relentless, innovation-focused culture with an engineering edge

Our industry-leading Galaxy line of products

Our CSR efforts focusing on the environment, social values, philanthropy and openness

Our ability to meet customers’ needs and deliver on our brand promise

Samsung’s year-over-year RepTrak® Pulse ranking score, calculated by Reputation Institute based on a survey of the general public, also increased by nearly seven points from last year’s survey.

The Reputation Institute’s RepTrak® model is the gold standard for reputation measurement, providing a one-of-a-kind measurement of how the public views the world’s best-known companies. It examines 15 stakeholder groups in more than 25 industries and more than 50 countries for more than 7,000 companies.
