Samsung is introducing Knox Enhanced Encrypted Protection (KEEP),¹ a new architecture designed to safeguard the next generation of personalized, AI-powered features, as its latest innovation in mobile security. KEEP creates encrypted, app-specific storage environments within the device’s secure storage area, ensuring that each app can access only its own sensitive information and nothing more.

Supporting Galaxy’s Personal Data Engine (PDE),² KEEP helps secure a user’s deeply personal insights — such as routines and preferences — that enable features like Now Brief and Smart Gallery search. These insights stay entirely on-device, protected by KEEP and further secured by Knox Vault, Samsung’s tamper-resistant hardware security environment. The result is a seamless foundation for Galaxy AI that delivers personalized intelligence while keeping data tightly contained and under the user’s control.

KEEP’s system-level structure allows it to scale across Galaxy AI innovations. In addition to PDE, it now protects Now Brief, Smart Suggestions and other on-device features that rely on user-specific inputs — enabling more advanced AI experiences without compromising privacy. With KEEP, Samsung is redefining how mobile devices safeguard data in the background to elevate privacy from a setting to an embedded design principle.

Smarter, More Connected Threat Response With Knox Matrix

As AI becomes more integrated across the ecosystem, Samsung is advancing protections that offer not just stronger security, but greater transparency and control for users, with Knox Matrix leading the way. Through One UI 8, Samsung is evolving Knox Matrix to deliver more proactive and user-friendly protection for connected Galaxy devices. When a device is flagged for serious risk — such as system manipulation or identity forgery — it is designed to automatically sign out of the Samsung Account, cutting off access to cloud-connected services to prevent threats from spreading.³

Users are notified across their connected Galaxy devices and guided to the ‘Security status of your devices’ page, where they can review the issue and take action. Even devices without the latest security status updates trigger a yellow-level warning, helping users respond before vulnerabilities grow.

Together, these updates make Samsung Galaxy’s ecosystem-level protection more dynamic, intuitive and visible, empowering users to maintain trust across all their devices with more confidence and clarity.

Secure Wi-Fi Strengthened With Quantum-Resistant Encryption

In continuation of its commitment to quantum-safe security, Samsung is bringing post-quantum cryptography to Secure Wi-Fi,⁴ extending the trusted approach first introduced on the Galaxy S25 series through Post-Quantum Enhanced Data Protection (EDP). Secure Wi-Fi is now being upgraded with a new cryptographic framework⁵ designed to strengthen network protection against emerging threats, particularly those anticipated in the era of quantum computing. This enhancement secures the key exchange process at the core of encrypted connections, helping ensure robust privacy even over public networks.

Quantum computing, once fully realized, could undermine many of today’s data protection methods. By integrating post-quantum cryptography, Secure Wi-Fi is built to withstand future attacks that capture encrypted data with the intent to break it once quantum technology matures — a tactic known as “harvest now, decrypt later.” This upgrade fortifies the secure tunnel between Galaxy devices and Samsung servers, reinforcing the integrity of data transmissions in high-risk environments like public Wi-Fi.

In addition to this future-ready foundation, Secure Wi-Fi offers a suite of advanced privacy features:

• Auto Protect: Automatically activates in public places like cafés, airports or hotels, securing Wi-Fi connections without requiring user action.
• Enhanced Privacy Protection (EPP): Encrypts internet traffic and routes it through multiple layers, combining packet encryption and relay to anonymize device information and help prevent tracking.
• Protection Activity: Provides visibility into protection history by showing which apps and networks were secured and how much data was encrypted over time.

A Trusted Platform With Built-In Safeguards

In addition to its latest innovations, Samsung continues to strengthen the core protections that underpin the Galaxy experience. These features reflect a multi-layered security approach that protects across hardware and software, while giving users greater visibility and control:

• Knox Vault secures sensitive credentials such as passwords, PINs and biometrics in a physically isolated environment, helping to keep them protected even if the main operating system is compromised.
• Auto Blocker helps provide defense by default, blocking unauthorized app installs, restricting command-based attacks and mitigating risks from potential zero-click threats.
• Advanced Intelligence Settings gives users the option to turn off online data processing for AI features, so personal information can stay on-device, fully under their control.
• Enhanced Theft Protection helps protect personal data even in high-risk situations such as robbery, using safeguards like Identity Check and Security Delay to prevent unauthorized access.

This latest set of updates reinforces Samsung’s long-standing commitment to mobile security that evolves with innovation. It strengthens on-device privacy for personalized AI with KEEP, expands transparency and user control through Knox Matrix, and introduces quantum-resistant protection to Secure Wi-Fi for a more future-ready Galaxy experience. Personalized Scheduling Assistance Powered by Bixby’s Voice Recognition

When asked, “Tell me my schedule for today,” Bixby instantly displayed the day’s agenda linked to the connected account on the Bespoke 4-Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub. Bixby’s ability to distinguish between multiple voices¹ allows each household member to access information from their personal account.²

Additionally, Bixby offers an accessibility feature³ that automatically syncs and transfers phone settings with connected appliances through voice recognition. For instance, if large print mode is activated on a user’s phone to accommodate vision impairments, the setting will automatically sync with the Family Hub refrigerator and display information in the same large text format for improved usability.

In addition, Bixby is useful for retrieving photos or locating a misplaced smartphone.

From Recipe Recommendations To Automated Cooking Settings

Bixby generated a list of food ingredients on the refrigerator screen when asked, “Are there any ingredients nearing their expiration date?” Noting that cream cheese and eggs were about to expire, Bixby suggested a selection of dishes when a request was made for recipes using those ingredients. Finally, Bixby promptly began preheating the Bespoke Slide-in Range when instructed to choose the first recipe and send to the oven.

Bixby’s ability to set cooking times and temperatures with just a few simple voice commands highlights the convenience of Samsung’s Home AI technology. Integrated with AI, Samsung’s appliances streamline meal preparation — changing a traditionally time-consuming process into something more efficient and manageable. Bixby and the Bespoke 4-Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub’s AI Vision Inside feature provide helpful tools for navigating everyday cooking, simplifying the kitchen experience for those who often struggle to decide what to make.

Intelligent Home Monitoring and Management While Users Are Away

Home AI revolutionizes household management by utilizing mobile GPS and appliance sensors to detect when no one is home, enabling devices to automatically initiate regular maintenance tasks.⁴

With schedules set through SmartThings, appliances can begin operations like cleaning and laundry when the house is empty. The Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI empties its dustbin and cleans the floors, while the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo performs a drum cleaning cycle.⁵ Progress can be monitored remotely through SmartThings notifications, such as cleaning reports, delivered directly to smartphones.

Appliances can complete tasks like cleaning and laundry before anyone arrives when users pre-set return times, offering an efficient and hands-off experience. Home AI brings a new level of convenience to daily life, creating a home environment that is consistently comfortable and refreshed.

Intruder Detection and Monitoring for Enhanced Home Security

Even when the household is away for an extended period, Samsung’s AI appliances can keep the home safe through real-time video monitoring and intrusion detection. During a demonstration in the Home AI exhibition, sensors in nearby appliances identified movement and directed the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI to the detected location. Functioning like a CCTV, the robot vacuum monitored the situation using its camera and sent an alert to the registered user’s account.

In this way, appliance sensors will detect suspicious activity while the user is away if the intruder detection feature⁶ is activated. Notifications are sent via SmartThings, allowing users to view live monitoring footage and quickly assess the situation. For an added layer of security, AI appliances can also alert linked security services if they determine the activity to be a potential intrusion.

Reliable AI Appliances, Backed by Robust Security

Above all, Samsung’s interconnected AI appliances offer peace of mind with their robust security features. The company’s smart appliances⁷ are safeguarded by the Samsung Knox security solution, protecting personal data from malicious software and external threats while significantly enhancing data safety within the home.

Additionally, appliances connected to Wi-Fi can monitor each other’s security status through Knox Matrix.⁸ If a threat is detected, the affected device is disconnected from the network — and the user is immediately notified.

The Home AI exhibition at CES 2025 highlighted unmatched convenience and an impressive array of features, driven by advanced security and voice recognition technology. As such, Samsung is prioritizing data intelligence research to transform vast amounts of data into meaningful and intuitive user experiences.

The Power of Data Intelligence in Personalized AI

A truly personalized AI experience starts with understanding the user. Data intelligence identifies a user’s needs at specific moments based not only on historical device usage data but also on the user’s present context. This enables appropriate services to be delivered in a timely manner. However, there are challenges — for example, users don’t hand in refined reports of their needs and wants; the matching of expected needs and potential services must be carried out in real time; and most of all, personal information must constantly be kept safe.

As Samsung reaches consumers across nearly all daily touchpoints — including work, entertainment, household chores, health and security — the company has the unique opportunity to gain deep insights into user behaviors and preferences.

In order to harness this potential, Samsung has strengthened its data technology capabilities by researching user data collected annually from hundreds of millions of devices and services — all in strict compliance with internal and external regulations. As AI models develop a better understanding of users through data collection, processing and analysis, they can leverage retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to deliver more personalized services for different contexts. By using technologies to connect reliable, logic-based knowledge bases to large language models (LLMs), these AI models access the latest, most reliable information and find the most suitable answers.

As Samsung focuses on technologies that connect data to refine personalized AI experiences, a key question is how can such vast and complex data be managed more effectively and tailored precisely to individual needs? The answer, in part, lies in knowledge graphs.

Enhancing AI Experiences With Knowledge Graphs

A knowledge graph is a knowledge representation technology that organizes related information in an interconnected graph format, making it easily interpretable for both humans and computers. By defining individual entities within the data and linking them, their relationship can be represented as a “triple” in the form of “subject — predicate — object.” For example, “the capital of South Korea is Seoul” can be represented in the following graph, “South Korea — capital — Seoul.” Various types of knowledge such as people, objects, times and places can be structured in a highly refined manner by connecting numerous entities in this triple format.

Unlike traditional relational databases that fill tables with information, knowledge graphs effectively store data and quickly retrieve information or new inferences as needed.

Samsung is actively advancing research in knowledge graphs. While earlier forms of data usage were limited to individual apps, this technology allows for free data search and utilization across app or service boundaries — enabling a hyper-personalized experience as if the device were tailored exclusively to the user.

When combined with Samsung’s on-device AI, knowledge graphs allow users to experience highly customized AI services while protecting sensitive personal data from external exposure. This technology is expected to be applied across various products and devices.

The key to implementing knowledge graphs is the ability to quickly find specific answers from information represented in the graph. Converting constantly changing real-world data into graphs and efficiently extracting information requires complex computations — and as the graphs grow, rapid information retrieval becomes more challenging.

To bolster its capabilities in this area, Samsung acquired Oxford Semantic Technologies in July. Oxford Semantic Technologies, a U.K.-based startup renowned for its knowledge graph technology, specializes in optimizing data processing and advanced inference to facilitate swift understanding and precise extraction of information from knowledge graphs.

Samsung has collaborated with Oxford Semantic Technologies on graph databases and ontologies¹ since 2018, and the recent acquisition is anticipated to create synergy in personalized AI research across Samsung’s product ecosystem. The company plans to develop applications that offer valuable experiences to consumers and explore new research avenues in various areas including the integration of generative AI and knowledge graphs.

Empowering Everyday Life With Data-Driven Insights

Samsung is rapidly incorporating personalized AI features powered by data intelligence across a wide range of products and services to enrich users’ daily lives.

Digital healthcare is one example. The Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Ring comprehensively analyze user health data including sleep, exercise and heart rate to offer an Energy Score via the Samsung Health app. Going beyond simple data measurement, this analysis provides an easy-to-understand numeric summary of a user’s daily health status and personalized insights for individual activities. By researching the weighted importance of each factor in the Energy Score based on age and gender, Samsung has developed a more customized approach to health management.

The entertainment experience has also been enhanced through data-driven insights. In the U.S., Gaming Hub — Samsung’s game platform available on its smartphones — uses explainable AI (XAI) to offer personalized game recommendations. Leveraging a model of the user’s preferences, this technology not only recommends games but also explains the reasoning behind each suggestion to help users select the games that suit them best.

Refined AI Experiences With SmartThings

Personalized AI will evolve as more devices connect with each other and acquire usage data from users’ daily lives. At Samsung Developer Conference 2024 (SDC24) in October, Samsung unveiled Home Insight — a service that allows users to manage and control their smart home through SmartThings. The feature analyzes users’ lifestyle patterns, device usage history and home conditions to provide real-time reports and tailored recommendations such as turning off devices or utilizing specific features based on different situations.

In addition, Samsung has a personalized AI feature to support the well-being and safety of family members in need. Launched in June, SmartThings Family Care allows users to remotely monitor family members and take any necessary actions through SmartThings-connected devices and location-based data. The company plans to expand these AI-connected capabilities to health devices, supporting family health in areas like sleep and diet.

Samsung is advancing technology that allows devices to recognize users and provide seamless, personalized experiences across all connected devices. For example, the company is planning to enable users who have large text mode activated on their smartphones to automatically apply the setting to other devices with a single voice command. Additionally, Samsung is exploring functions that use sensors and devices within the home to detect a user’s location and adjust lighting, temperature and humidity according to individual preferences.

Personalized AI Needs Robust Security

Security is a fundamental requirement for delivering safe, personalized AI. To ensure the protection of personal information and address biases in AI systems, a multi-faceted approach is needed — including improving data processing and model training processes and implementing a rigorous verification process for outputs.

When collecting internal and external data for AI model training, Samsung performs data pre-processing to check and filter for privacy violations. Additionally, the company is strengthening its safety verification of AI outputs by addressing risks related to harm, bias, privacy and jailbreak² vulnerabilities.

Samsung’s Knox Matrix further elevates security in a multi-device connected environment. Using blockchain technology, connected devices can monitor each other for security threats through Trust Chain; securely share user data by transmitting only encrypted information to servers via Credential Sync; and apply consistent security standards across operating systems such as Android, Tizen and Windows with Cross Platform. Samsung plans to expand Knox Matrix to cover its mobile devices, TVs and home appliances.

Knox Matrix Unlocks Ultimate Transparency

Knox Matrix is Samsung’s vision for the future, enhancing protection through multi-layered, intelligent threat monitoring between connected Samsung devices. One UI 7 sets the foundation for the next frontier of security.

• Knox Matrix monitors devices through Trust Chain, a secure private blockchain — and the new Knox Matrix dashboard introduces an easier way to maintain transparent security across a connected device ecosystem. With One UI 7, it’s more intuitive than ever to check the security status of multiple Samsung smart devices, including Galaxy mobile devices, TVs and home appliances, at a glance. When all connected devices are up to date and no risks are detected, they will show as ‘green,’ or secure. Users can also see if a device is at risk, and the dashboard will prompt an actionable recommendation to mitigate the threat.
• A new recovery method for Enhanced Data Protection adds ease and convenience to the process of retrieving data stored on Samsung Cloud. Enhanced Data Protection keeps connected devices synchronized and secure, also ensuring that if access to a trusted device is lost, users have a backup plan to prevent the loss of their data. With One UI 7, users can now transfer recovered, private data to a new device by verifying the lock screen factor — whether pin, pattern or password — of their previous device.
• As part of Knox Matrix’s Credential Sync, Samsung has developed new ways to manage and secure identities and credentials for today’s hyperconnected world in the form of passkeys.² With One UI 7, users can now create and use passkeys to log into their Samsung Account. As digital authentication credentials, passkeys enable a faster, easier way to securely log in to apps, devices and websites — so users can safely sign into their TVs, AI Family Hub refrigerator and more, simply by using the fingerprint sensor on their smartphones.

Maximum Restrictions Boost User Control

Maximum Restrictions establishes a powerful line of defense against today’s cyber threats. One UI 7 further enhances user choice with new features designed to protect those who may need additional safeguards. Maximum Restrictions has been updated with added controls for network connections so users can enjoy the peace of mind that comes from boosted protection without losing access to key device functionalities. Thanks to the added controls, users have the choice to block 2G service and prevent data from being intercepted when connected to potentially unsafe networks. Users can also prevent unintended automatic reconnection to certain Wi-Fi networks³ that may be less secure, ensuring data remains private while still having the option to connect manually if desired.

This update enhances Maximum Restrictions’ existing suite of protections for Samsung Messages and Samsung Gallery, which allows users to remove location data in shared photos, prevent automatic attachment downloads and block hyperlinks, previews and shared albums.

More Security Settings Bring Added Device Protection

One UI 7 introduces even more ways users can adjust security settings to best suit the ways in which they use their device. Users can choose to block USB connections to prevent any other access through the USB port while the device is locked, except for battery charging.

To protect against malicious apps that come from sideloading, One UI 7’s new Safe Install system works alongside Auto Blocker to send a warning when a user attempts to download from an unauthorized source, alerting them of security risks and preventing unintentional sideloading on Galaxy devices worldwide.⁴

Theft Protection Enhances Data Privacy

One UI 7 introduces new features available only on Galaxy devices to the Android suite of theft protection solutions, enhancing the safeguards in place to ensure personal data remains secure even when devices are lost or stolen. In addition to Theft Detection Lock,⁵ Offline Device Lock and Remote Lock, Galaxy users can now leverage additional security measures in Identity Check, an opt-in feature designed for when a device’s PIN becomes compromised. If suspicious activity is detected, users can rest assured that these Galaxy-exclusive protections will kick in.

• When in an unfamiliar location, biometric authentication will be required to make any changes to important security settings that could put personal information at risk.
• As an added safeguard, a one-hour security delay will prevent unauthorized users from making any immediate changes to the device.

One UI 7 is the next step in Samsung’s commitment to privacy on AI, introducing advanced security features to ensure complete protection in the era of AI. The official One UI 7 release will commence with upcoming Galaxy S series devices, featuring additional AI capabilities including enhanced, hardware-dependent on-device AI functions, starting from the first quarter of 2025. In line with Samsung’s commitment to extend its OS upgrade policy, the update will gradually roll out to other Galaxy devices.

The One UI 7 beta program will be first available for Galaxy S24 series devices in Germany, India, Korea, Poland, the U.K. and the U.S., from December 5. Galaxy S24 series users can apply to join the beta program via Samsung Members.

Jong-Hee Han opened up the day’s talks by underscoring the importance of convenience in an age of brilliant yet complex technologies. “At Samsung, our goal has always been to make our lives easier through technology innovation,” said Han. “But innovation can also be burdensome for users if convenience is not at the forefront. Our teams are determined to deliver devices that are as smooth and accessible as they are advanced.”

Covering everything from Calm Technology to Knox Matrix to holistic household platforms like Bixby Home Studio and SmartThings, Han outlined a device and systems ecosystem that puts the user experience at the center. “The goal of all this is to give you an easier, seamless and more frictionless experience,” Han emphasized. “So you can focus on what matters most.”

A Home That Learns and Adapts Through SmartThings

Following Jong-Hee Han, Jaeyeon Jung, Vice President and Head of SmartThings, Mobile eXperience Business, discussed how Covid-19 galvanized teams at Samsung to prioritize the important things in life, particularly in the home. “If you’re like me, the past few years have been a time to prioritize what matters, to find moments to pause and refresh,” said Jung.

Samsung’s SmartThings platform, Jung explained, is the perfect way to do this in your home. Thanks to a wide range of improvements to the household ecosystem platform, finding, setting up, onboarding and synchronizing new devices into your household will be easier and more efficient than ever. This includes Galaxy Quick Pair, Matter Hub connectivity, SmartThings Energy and SmartThings Music Sync, as well as boosted integration with partner systems and an expanded SmartThings website.

Matter: A Truly Harmonious Household Experience

At the end of her talk, Jung introduced Matthew McCullough from Google, who provided an overview of Matter, a system that lays the groundwork for true interoperability between devices in the home. Samsung is committed to Matter integration, and confident it will make the dream of a fully integrated household a reality.

By working closely together, Samsung and Google aim to make life for both users and device makers simpler and smoother, with multi-admin features that cut down on manual management and make Google Home and Nest Hub more accessible. “This ease of use across Samsung and Google is just the start, and we’re looking forward to delivering a more seamless, delightful home experience,” said McCullough.

Industry Collaboration Making Device Ecosystems More Open

Continuing with the theme of interoperability, Mark Benson, Head of SmartThings U.S., emphasized Samsung’s commitment to supporting Matter. “To accelerate Matter adoption, we created the SmartThings Matter Early Access Program, where we work with major device manufacturers to ensure their Matter-enabled devices work seamlessly with SmartThings,” said Benson.

The SmartThings app, SmartThings Hub Core and SmartThings Cloud, Benson pointed out, are already prepared to support Matter. “It’s all about delivering interoperability right out of the box,” he said.

The Expanding Role of Bixby

Anil Yadav, Head of Bixby Lab at Samsung Research¹ America, took to the stage to discuss SmartThings’ bespoke speech platform and de facto voice in the home, including its exciting new feature: Bixby Home Studio. “With Bixby Home Studio, you can create experiences that span multiple devices and respond more intuitively to user commands,” said Yadav. “For example, if you ask Bixby to turn on your air conditioner, Bixby can check if you have any windows open and let you know to close them, saving energy.”

Premium Security and Privacy for an Integrated Household

Samsung envisions more than just a convenient and integrated home experience. Its teams are also creating an experience that is as safe as it is smooth, as private as it is proactive. After Yadav’s Bixby talk, Shin Baik, Principal Engineer of Security Team, Mobile eXperience Business, discussed with the audience how top-notch innovations need top-notch security to go with them. Unwavering in its three security and privacy principles — transparency, choice and protection — Samsung has worked hard to develop platforms like Samsung Knox. This will keep everything from your phone to your refrigerator safe and secure, said Baik.

A new platform called Knox Matrix, in particular, is now on the frontline of multi-device protection. “Knox Matrix is your own private blockchain,” Baik explained. “Multiple devices share credentials, turning the ecosystem of devices into a shield that protects everyone.”

In step with these developments, of course, is Samsung’s insistence on a customizable privacy experience, which is provided by Samsung’s comprehensive Security and privacy dashboard. “We believe that you — and only you — should be making decisions about how your information is managed and stored,” said Baik.

A More Vibrant Content Ecosystem Than Ever

Sang Kim, Senior Vice President and Head of Product & Marketing at Samsung Electronics America, shared important insights on Samsung’s extensive media network, covering a range of recent successes.

Samsung Gaming Hub, launched in June, is an all-in-one gaming solution that, thanks to partnerships with industry leaders like Xbox, lets players connect their controllers to Samsung TVs and access all the games they love without even needing a console or PC.

Samsung TV Plus, the FAST streaming TV and video platform that relaunched this summer, now reaches 24 countries and 465 million devices globally. It is projected to clock in an impressive three billion hours streamed by users by the end of 2022.

Thanks to broad reach, smooth monetization integration and an advertising environment optimized for both clients and users, Samsung streaming also offers an ideal platform for premium advertising.

“Today, Fortune 500 companies from around the world have leveraged Samsung TV Plus and our other advanced TV advertising solutions to reach valuable consumers,” Kim said.

Tizen’s Global Conquest

Following Sang Kim, Yongjae Kim, Executive Vice President and Deputy Head of R&D Team, Visual Display Business, took to the stage to talk about Tizen, Samsung’s open source, Linux-backed operating system. Kim took the audience through a huge variety of developments in the Tizen journey, which is growing its capabilities to an ever-wider spectrum of uses and applications.

Leveraging partnerships with gaming leaders like Xbox, NVIDIA and Utomik, Tizen is helping bring a truly consolidated, uninterrupted gaming experience to users with Samsung Gaming Hub, with fantastic performance and image quality, Kim explained. It delivers stunning visual displays and blockchain wallet integration to Samsung TVs for better at-home art experiences, while also helping Smart Hub deliver the best in content searches and recommendations. Tizen Enterprise, meanwhile, is boosting B2B partners’ display and signage options, while Tizen Everywhere aims to expand licensing and bring the system to more countries.

“Since its launch ten years ago, Tizen now powers more than 330 million TVs, refrigerators and other smart devices,” said Kim. “At Samsung, we will continue to create Tizen experiences that transform and go beyond what many thought possible.”

One UI 5 and the “Your Galaxy, Your Way” Philosophy

Next up was Sally Hyesoon Jeong, Vice President of Framework R&D Group, Mobile eXperience Business, whose theme for the day was the company’s latest leap forward in the UI experience: One UI 5.

“On this stage three years ago, I shared our vision for One UI, the essence of the Galaxy experience,” Jeong began. “One UI truly captures the ‘Your Galaxy, Your Way’ philosophy by bringing users an intuitive, connected experience that is uniquely yours.”

Splitting the new UI update’s advancements into three areas — Personalization, Productivity and Possibility — Jeong shared a host of new and improved features. Personalization included deep customization enhancements, like Dynamic Lockscreen for smartphones, Watch Face Studio for Galaxy Watches and custom-built Modes and Routines, while health and security functions are also more adaptable than ever. The Productivity section included Bixby Text Call, improved phone-to-PC connectivity and multitasking upgrades like Taskbar improvements. Possibilities covered One UI 5’s integration with innovative Samsung Foldable devices and related functions like Flex Mode.

A Look Over the Horizon: Robotics and Health in Tomorrow’s Homes

The final talk before the wrap-up was from Sebastian Seung, President and Head of Samsung Research. While many of the day’s talks focused on recent improvements, Seung has his eye on the innovations of tomorrow, aiming for no less than the merging of the physical and digital worlds.

“I’d like to invite you to look over the horizon, to a future dreamed of but not yet realized,” said Seung, who divided his presentation between the future of robotics in the home and Samsung’s ambitions to contribute to health & wellness research.

In the home robotics field, Seung discussed the company’s continued success with a household supported by advanced, AI-enhanced devices, including the object-detecting JetBot AI+ vacuum, the Bot Handy chore assistant prototype and even future plans for Samsung’s latest robot arm manipulation code, which will soon be available on GitHub.

Moving on to the subject of health, Seung introduced Samsung Health Stack, an open source project from Samsung that aims to actively advance health & wellness research. “This is a full stack SDK, a mobile app for patients, a portal for researchers and a backend database,” said Seung. “A complete package of open-source tools designed for the easy creation of digital systems for the research of health and wellness.”

Closing: Building a More Sustainable Future With Samsung

To round off the talks, Jong-Hee Han returned to the stage to offer a final word, summarizing the technologies showcased at SDC and the course of the company’s future of innovation.

“I would like to talk about the future one more time,” he added. “The future of something very dear to my heart: our planet. I believe we have a responsibility to help create a sustainable future. We do that through Everyday Sustainability, a belief that every stage of the product lifecycle can be more sustainable.”

Han presented a range of Samsung sustainability commitments and environmental research directions, including responsible material sourcing, recycling, disposal, renewable energy and billions in investments toward meeting carbon emissions reductions.

“By 2027, we will run all DX operations on renewable energy,” Han said, ending the day on an optimistic note and a glimpse of a future for customers that is easier, more seamless, more frictionless and — crucially — more eco-conscious.

Samsung Electronics held its annual Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) today in San Francisco, bringing together developers, creators and designers to explore seamless, connected experiences powered by Samsung.

During the event, Samsung shared more about its commitment to creating simplified, game-changing customer experiences, including the company’s updated vision for SmartThings as it evolves from a connectivity platform to an enabler of smarter lifestyles. From deeper integration with Bixby to seamless connectivity with Matter-compatible devices, SmartThings is creating a richer, more open world that empowers all users to streamline their connections and their daily lives.

“At Samsung, we continuously innovate our devices, platforms and services to be simpler and more convenient. I am proud to share the next generation of our work, like SmartThings, to further our collaboration with partners and developers,” said Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics. “As technologies become more complex, we will always search for ways to make life easier, more connected, and more flexible, so our consumers can focus on what matters most.”

Connecting Platforms and Devices With Calm Technology

Samsung’s vision of seamless connectivity is inspired by the philosophy of Calm Technology — where devices instantly work together, so consumers can save time on setup and get right into the experience. To realize this vision, Samsung reimagined SmartThings and its connected services and partnerships, including Samsung’s Hub Everywhere, extending its capabilities to the entire smart home with audio and visual data as well as SmartThings Energy, SmartThings Pet and SmartThings Cooking. Samsung also partnered with Philips Hue to integrate Philips Hue Sync right into Galaxy devices so smart home lighting can match with music.

The seamless experience will extend beyond Samsung’s ecosystem through SmartThings’ integration with Matter and Samsung’s membership in the Home Connectivity Alliance. Google and Samsung have worked together to enable users to find and link their devices across platforms by building multi-admin feature on Matter devices. The collaboration will bring more devices and users into the connected home in the future.

Bixby has been integrated more deeply with SmartThings, a tool for developers to build more intelligent voice user interface experiences. As Samsung’s representative voice assistant platform, Bixby has evolved to become the on-device AI solution able to control individual Galaxy devices, as well as the cross-device experience throughout the Samsung ecosystem. With the new Bixby Home Studio, developers can now build differentiated, customized experiences for the SmartThings platform. In addition, Bixby will be even more widely available to users with support for Latin American Spanish, starting in November.

As the smart home is becoming more advanced, Samsung is introducing a new security paradigm, enabling Samsung devices to protect each other. Samsung Knox Matrix¹ is a private blockchain based platform that turns eligible Samsung devices into a shield to protect users’ entire device ecosystem — from Galaxy devices to TVs and home appliances. Plus, users can customize personal privacy settings with the new Security and privacy dashboard, which scans for vulnerabilities, recommends security updates and gives users data management options to keep privacy and security top of mind.

Personalized Services for Better Experiences

In the past year, Samsung TV Plus — Samsung’s free, ad-supported streaming TV and video (FAST) platform available on Samsung Smart TVs² and mobile devices — reached 100% growth in viewership,³ and projects three billion hours streamed by the end of the year. To build on this momentum, Samsung TV Plus has expanded its offering by adding partnerships with Lionsgate and Vice Media, providing 8K video on demand. Samsung TV Plus has also gone through a redesign, to reflect its extraordinary variety of content with more than 1,600 channels across 24 countries. Samsung TV Plus is the premium choice for a seamless ad experience, where stream stitching makes ad playback simpler than ever.

After 10 years of service, Samsung’s Tizen operating system (OS) continues to offer best-in-class user experiences. The Samsung Gaming Hub brings better, faster and more convenient access to gaming on Samsung Smart TVs, provided by industry-leading partners, such as Xbox, NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Utomik and Amazon Luna. Samsung Gaming Hub bridges expertise in hardware and software to integrate features like AI Upscaling and multitask functions to make gaming on Samsung Smart TVs an immersive, optimized experience.

Tizen OS is also expanding to offer NFTs support with partners like Art Token, laCollection and Nifty Gateway. For B2B customers and developers, Samsung is providing B2B APIs specific to industries and use cases like Syncplay, which allows content to be synchronized and played in multiple signages. Tizen is also introducing SALT, a new content conversion solution to display the highest-quality HDR10+ content on supported TVs.

Your Galaxy, Your Way With One UI 5

By introducing the new One UI 5, Samsung has empowered users to easily customize their device’s look and feel, while enhancing productivity and providing amazing experiences across devices and platforms. One UI 5 brings more personalized experiences with custom-built Modes and Routines, and a Dynamic Lock screen that displays multiple visuals on your phone, your Galaxy Watch and other One UI 5 devices. With the new Bixby Text Call feature, Bixby Voice will answer calls on your behalf and share typed messages with the caller, speaking aloud as if you had answered. One UI 5 also introduces new daily health solutions to help track health and wellness in one place. This includes the Samsung Privileged Health SDK, which enables developers to build apps that leverage the BioActive Sensor on the Galaxy Watch.⁴

Future-Forward Investment and Research

Samsung Research is looking beyond today’s horizon to innovate for a better tomorrow, full of relentless innovation and open collaboration. Samsung Research is making its robot arm manipulation code available on GitHub, enabling academics, researchers and developers to examine new ideas in robotic manipulation.

The team at Samsung Research was also inspired by the new wellness features Samsung has introduced, particularly on the Galaxy Watch5. To find new use-cases leveraging these features, Samsung Research is working with universities and healthcare institutions that will explore areas like heart health, stress, blood pressure, lung health and neuroscience. As a result, Samsung is offering a full stack SDK — the Samsung Health Stack — which will jumpstart research into important health fields and spark new development.
