The modern kitchen is a dynamic hub, and today’s consumers are seeking a space that can meet their every need around-the-clock. From April 8 to 14, at Fuorisalone 2019 in Milan, Italy, Samsung Electronics is bringing together contemporary trends, smart products, new technologies and superlative design to reveal kitchens that welcome a diverse range of experiences.

As we invest increasingly more in our homes, they have become a deeply personal reflection of our selves. In today’s home, there is no place like the kitchen: a space to come together to plan, create and share. Samsung’s built-in appliances form kitchens that match each and every moment of consumers’ lifestyles, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

All Day, Every Day

For this year’s exhibition, Samsung presents visitors with the “24 hr. Kitchen”, an interactive and interpretive installation conceived in collaboration with renowned food artist Laila Gohar and Design Studio 2×4.

The 24hr. Kitchen emphasizes the vital role that the kitchen plays as the heart of the home, adapting to every aspect of our ever-changing, 24-hour lives. Samsung kitchen appliances are designed to meet the needs of millennial lifestyles around the clock and, to illustrate this, the Samsung booth has been divided into three rooms – Morning, Day and Evening – each showcasing one of three built-in appliance lineups. One long counter weaves its way through the booth, connecting each room to the next stage in the day.

Reinterpreting the Classics

The exhibition embraces Gohar’s fanciful approach to food, with each room presenting guests with various interpretations of a single ingredient transformed by Samsung kitchen technologies, providing the ideal backdrops to feature Samsung’s built-in packages. Throughout the booth, Samsung’s latest built-in products are featured, from the Dual Cook Flex oven and Induction cooktop, to the Twin Cooling Plus refrigerator and WaterWall dishwasher.

The Morning room celebrates the heartiness of grains. Upon stepping into the room, guests are greeted with decorative bunches of wheat and an eye-catching arrangement of different kinds of grain. They can enjoy pieces of bread with butter taken from elaborate butter sculptures, a variety of focaccia and volcanic cakes mounded high onto the counter. With clean lines and neutral shades, the Morning room’s Silver Stainless Steel package creates a modern, bright kitchen well suited to the joyous delight of freshly baked bread.

In the Day room, tomatoes take center stage, with tomatoes on the vine hanging from the ceilings and a display of assorted heirloom tomatoes on the table. Guests are encouraged to savor delicacies such as tomato caviar atop a beetroot cracker, sundried tomatoes and tomato paper with tomato gelée. The tomatoes’ sophisticated pops of color give the Smart Kitchen package the warm glow of daytime.

The Evening room is devoted to all things sweet. After feasting their eyes on a soft brown sugar landscape, pools of molasses and sugar block sculptures, guests can treat themselves to sweet confections including rock candy lollipops, honeycomb candy and sugar glass. Black Stainless Steel casts a moody atmosphere over the chic sweetness of the Evening room.

The Samsung 24hr. Kitchen, open from April 8th to April 14th, is located at Brera Site — via delle Erbe, 2, Milan – and is free entry from 10 am to 8 pm.

Samsung Electronics, today announced that it will hold its design exhibit, showcasing its user-centered design philosophy at Milan Design Week’s Fuorisalone 2019. The venue is located in Via Bergognone 26 in the Tortona Design District. As Samsung Design Center’s exhibition, ‘Resonance’ will showcase Samsung’s design philosophy under the new slogan, “Be Bold. Resonate with Soul.”

The company’s Digital Appliances Business is also showcasing “The Samsung 24hr Kitchen,” a unique installation that celebrates the renewed centrality of the kitchen as the heart of the home. The exhibition merges aspirational design and visionary food installations with Samsung’s refined built-in kitchen appliances. The 24hr. Kitchen is located at Brera Site in the Brera Design District.

“Our design philosophy is always inspired by people. With millennials representing a growing demographic and changing the consumer culture in unique ways, Samsung is reinterpreting its user-centered design philosophy in a modern way,” said Don Tae Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Corporate Design Center at Samsung Electronics. “One way in which millennials show their distinctive lifestyle is how they constantly yearn to discover new things and take on challenges, which calls for bold approach and creative designs. We aim to install our authenticity and emotional resonance into our designs that permeates through people’s daily lives.”

The Design Showcases with “Be Bold. Resonate with Soul.”

Millennials bring new values, lifestyles, and mindsets to daily living. Samsung has long been committed to design excellence and suited for ever-evolving consumer tastes, putting people at the center of its design philosophy. With millennials becoming more influential culturally, Samsung is bringing new design concepts and application to reinterpret its core design philosophy.

Samsung’s ‘Resonance’ exhibition will showcase advanced connectivity and a multi-sensory experience built on the company’s technological leadership. The exhibit at Milan Design Week 2019 will take visitors to a maze-like space filled with iridescent lights where they can directly interact with the exhibition based on daily behaviors, such as breathing, talking, and touching – ultimately becoming a part of the exhibition. This is the resonance between artwork and the audience that Samsung is pursuing by enhancing interaction between people and objects.

Redesigning the Heart of the Home with a 24-Hour Kitchen

Samsung’s Digital Appliances Business is also attending Fuorisalone as an exhibitor for the first time. The exhibition will celebrate the renewed centrality of the kitchen as the heart of the home with the Samsung 24hr. Kitchen concept, an interpretive installation that features Samsung’s advanced built-in kitchen appliances. The exhibition is designed to demonstrate how the kitchen has become a dynamic hub at the center of consumers’ 24/7 daily routines.

Samsung 24hr.

In its debut exhibition at the biennial EuroCucina 2018, Samsung Electronics showcased its full range of premium built-in appliances that bring benefits to consumers through cutting-edge designs and heightened connectivity. The event took place at the Salone del Mobile, Milan, April 17-22, where more than 300,000 visitors were expected to attend.

Last year Samsung’s European home appliances business grew five times faster than the market. As a result of this momentum, Samsung participated in EuroCucina 2018, a showcase for new trends, designs and technologies for European kitchens.

The European built-in market is worth $18.5 billion annually, accounting for 40% of the global built-in market. Samsung’s premium built-in appliances, equipped with and IoT technology, are positioned at the center of the market. The opportunity to experience the kitchen of the future at the Samsung booth attracted the attention of many visitors at the exhibition.

Consumer-Led Innovations

Samsung displayed its full built-in product lineup at EuroCucina. The range included its Twin Cooling Plus technology refrigerator, Virtual Flame cooktop and Waterwall dishwasher. The company also unveiled the new Dual Cook Flex oven at the event.

The Dual Cook Flex zone highlighted how the oven can adapt to the needs of its users. Its innovative Dual Cook technology, for example, allows independent access to the upper oven compartment without compromising on cooking performance in the lower compartment. With research indicating that European oven users are cooking multiple dishes simultaneously three times a week on average, the oven’s Dual Cook system allows users to set different temperatures and time settings for each compartment, giving them greater control over simultaneous cooking.

Dual Cook Flex offers a range of IoT features. Consumers can remotely preheat, monitor and control the oven from anywhere with the SmartThings app. What’s more, the Cooking Guide makes setting recommendations based on ingredients and type of food being prepared.

The booth also demonstrated how Samsung’s industry-first innovations in the home appliance market provide a seamless experience and make a real difference in the kitchen. Samsung’s Twin Cooling Plus technology, which independently controls the refrigerator and freezer, was showcased in a transparent display to best illustrate how the system works. There were also zones exhibiting the Virtual Flame cooktop, an induction stove that mimics the appearance of flames to provide more intuitive visual control over the heat, and the WaterWall dishwasher that delivers remarkable cleaning results with a streaming wall of water.

Seamless Kitchen Connectivity

As people spend more of their time at home in the kitchen, and the space fulfills more roles than ever before, smart technology has become increasingly more important. Yet digitization of the kitchen has been slower than other key spaces of the home.

In addition to exhibiting the IoT capabilities of the Dual Cook Flex oven, Samsung demonstrated the seamless connectivity of key home IoT products at EuroCucina 2018.

On display was the latest generation of Family Hub integrated with SmartThings, Samsung’s IoT platform, which offers seamless connectivity between any IoT device using one app and a single cloud that manages all your devices. The smart refrigerator provides a center point for connecting all devices in the home, and is equipped with features such as Bixby, Meal Planner, Shopping List and Recipes to enhance your smart cooking experience.

Recent strides towards connectivity and innovation have resulted in 90 percent of Samsung products, including smartphones and TVs, being IoT-applicable. Thanks to the company’s collaborative efforts based on the Open Connectivity Foundation, the SmartThings ecosystem is operable and compatible with even more devices and brands.

“We are fully committed to ensuring that all our products are not only IoT ready, but also intelligent by 2020,” said HS Kim, President and CEO of Samsung’s Consumer Electronics Business, at the press conference on April 18th.

Stylish Built-in Design

With premium designs such as Samsung’s black stainless-steel built-in packages, the exhibit modeled the streamlined look of the modern kitchen, which couples elegant design with intelligent technology.

Based on a philosophy of thoughtful design, today’s kitchen embraces simplicity, timelessness and an aesthetic that emphasizes minimalism while maximizing usability. This “Flat Design” favors clean lines, hidden displays and seamless integration. Samsung’s built-in appliances, such as its premium flat design refrigerators, have a precision engineered flat face which sits flush to the counter front.

Samsung Electronics acquired the luxury US built-in brand ‘Dacor’ in 2016 and has worked with various other partners, such as Nolte in Germany, Scavolini and Veneta Cucine in Italy to increase the competitiveness of premium built-in appliances as part of the company’s commitment to ‘bring the kitchen to life’. As well as displaying the ‘Dacor Modernist Collection’, Samsung also collaborated with numerous European luxury brands such as Nolte at this exhibition. Amongst these designs, the Dacor built-in refrigerator, which imbues a sense of luxury with its porcelain inside, has attracted significant attention.

Integrating smart technology with appliances and pursuing further innovations will transform the way we cook and interact in the kitchen, as Samsung aims to provide a more seamless, connected experience throughout the home.

Did you know that four out of ten refrigerators in the European market are built-in types?

It is a simple yet noteworthy statistic of the European market. Unlike other regions, the percentage of built-in appliances in Europe is over 40 percent. Especially in Germany, around 50 percent of households use built-in appliances. This shows how much European customers love to use built-in type products that will perfectly fit into their home.

This is why Samsung Electronics and other home appliance manufacturers have such a fierce built-in appliances competition in Europe. Because built-in products exceed other types by far in terms of growth rate and profitability, the European market is all about built-in appliances. Global appliances manufacturers cannot miss this market as built-in appliances are an integral part and excellent test bed for the Internet of Things (IoT) in future households.

Opening a Premium Built-in Showroom in Poland

Samsung recently opened a built-in showroom “Cook Story by Samsung” in Warsaw, Poland. This showroom was the first of its kind in the European market and is full of premium built-in products that are optimized for European lifestyles. Samsung was the number one manufacturer of refrigerators, washing machines and electric ranges in Poland since 2012. As the new built-in products gained huge popularities after their release in the market earlier this year, Samsung also took the first place in the built-in refrigerator market in July.

Poland is just a starting point for Samsung to showcase its built-in products, as it plans to add more built-in showrooms in many other European countries. These showrooms will offer hands-on experiences of the leading built-in products to the customers, along with cooking shows and other various events. Samsung will bring unprecedented kitchen experiences for its customers.

Building a Full Lineup of Smart Built-ins

Samsung introduced a variety of the new built-in products to European countries to build its unique lineup in this year.

The lineup includes refrigerator models with No Frost technology and Twin Cooling Plus that maintains an optimal humidity level up to 70 percent, ovens with Gourmet Vapour Technology that efficiently delivers a super-heated vapor that quickly spreads from corner to corner to ensure even cooking, and Dual cook that is divided into two small ovens for separate cooking processes. It also contains induction cook tops with Virtual Flame Technology as well as Water Wall dishwashers that clean all of your dishes from corner to corner using high pressure wall of water that glides back and forth.

Another special feature of Samsung built-in appliances is that all major functions can be simply controlled via smartphones. For example, your smartphone can tell you whether the doors of refrigerators are opened. You can also check the temperatures of fridge and freezer so you can adjust the numbers from outside or start Rapid Cooling function. The products also support a smart warranty service that automatically diagnoses and treats any problems without consulting the manuals. In addition, Samsung plans to adopt soon the IoT services that will realize a more convenient connected home by enabling connection between appliances and other devices with Samsung Connect.

Close Collaborations with European Furniture Companies

Built-in appliances are basically the fusion of furniture and appliances, and therefore cooperation with furniture companies is inevitable. Samsung will collaborate to showcase and sell built-in appliances with major European furniture companies such as Nolte of Germany, Nobia of Northern Europe (including Marbodal), Veneta Cucine of Italy and more.

At the beginning of this month, Samsung revealed a European style built-in kitchen composed of elegant design and technologies at IFA 2017 that took place in Germany. The kitchen, a result of collaboration with three companies, drew a lot of attention with Family Hub refrigerator at the central point for an IoT-based built-in kitchen system that enables convenient management of food, ingredient, family communication and even entertainment.

“Built-in as a New Driving Force for CE Business”

Samsung has been expanding its built-in appliances business in not only Europe, but also North America, Asia and other parts of the world. Samsung showcased new products this year in cooperation with Dacor, a North American premium built-in appliances company which Samsung acquired last year.

“B2B and IoT are the new driving force for us to overcome the stagnated global CE market,” said BK Yoon, CEO of the CE Business at Samsung Electronics, at IFA 2017. “In three years, we will raise our competitive edge by becoming the top-tier in the North American built-in appliances market.”

How Your Fridge Works

From the primitive ice buckets of yesteryear to the modern day refrigerator, the technology we use to keep our food cool has evolved. Yet, even though the methods have changed over the years, the basic principles of cooling have been the same for centuries and we have always used a cooling substance and some form of insulation.

Whereas early systems might have used ice as the cooling substance, today we use chemical refrigerants. Refrigerants work by moving through the refrigeration cycle changing from gas to liquid and back again. Early refrigerants posed risks but the R-134a and R-600a refrigerants used today are non-corrosive, non-toxic, low cost, and environmentally friendly.

Insulation is another important element of a fridge as it keeps the warm air outside from penetrating the cool atmosphere of the fridge. In times past, the insulation was simply the ice bucket itself, or the stone wall of an archaic ice house. Now, a more sophisticated type of insulation is used whereby a urethane foam and VIP (Vacuum Insulation Panel) maintain the temperature of a refrigerator.

At its most basic, a refrigerator consists of four main parts that together work their magic to produce refrigeration.

Refrigerant in the form of liquid or gas circulates in the refrigeration cycle successively for cooling action

• Compressor: The compressor circulates the refrigerant by converting it between a low-temperature, low-pressure gas to a high-temperature, high pressure gas

• Condenser: The condenser transforms the high-temperature, high-pressure gas to a room-temperature high pressure liquid by discharging radiation heat

• Capillary tube: The capillary tube drops refrigerant’s pressure for next cooling action by passing it through a narrow tube with high resistance – the room-temperature, high-pressure liquid becomes a low-pressure, low-temperature two-phase fluid

• Evaporator: The refrigerant which is decompressed by the capillary tube evaporates at low temperature when entering the evaporator. The evaporator cools the fridge and freezer by absorbing heat from the food, which turns liquid into gas

New Wave of Fridge Tech: Twin Cooling PlusTM

Samsung is reinventing the fridge by developing Twin Cooling PlusTM technology, first introduced in 1995. The Samsung Twin Cooling PlusTM adds new levels of convenience and innovation with its two evaporators that manage the fridge and freezer space separately to minimize temperature fluctuation. This makes it possible to control optimal humidity and temperature because moisture in the fridge can remain separate from freezer. A higher humidity up to 70% preserves food for longer so this is a welcome addition that minimizes food wastage.

Additionally, in conventional – single evaporator – systems, odors from the fridge can be permeated to foods in the freezer because air from the two compartments is interconnected. Twin Cooling PlusTM fridges, however, prevent mixed odors that taint the ice you store in the freezer because twin cooling systems prevent air transition between the two compartments.

The comparison between mono cooling with single evaporator (left) and Twin Cooling Plus TM with two evaporators (right)

Fridge flexibility is another bonus that users can make use of with Twin Cooling PlusTM . It offers a range of options that enable users to customize their fridge in a way that best suits them. They can even switch off portions of their fridges to save energy. This is done through the separate cooling evaporators for the fridge and freezer that enables users to choose from five modes of operation: regular mode, energy saving mode, vacation mode, fridge max mode, and mini fridge mode.

A Growing Range

With Twin Cooling PlusTM technology now an established feature in Samsung fridges, the range of available products has grown to accommodate the different consumer needs. There’s the side by side refrigerators, the bottom mount fridges and top mount fridges – all with their unique benefits and features.

Then there’s the T-type refrigerator – a world first Samsung. It’s the only Triple Cooling and dual compressor fridge in the world. Each zone can be controlled independently and maintain optimal high humidity levels.

The fridge has come a long way from the early days of inefficient appliance with limited capabilities. Samsung is now at the forefront of rethinking the fridge. As a result, it will get more efficient, offer better insulation, more space and it will get smarter. The fridge no longer needs to be forgotten about – it can be embraced and interacted with in new ways.
