Samsung Electronics announced today that it will support the world’s first 8K HDR10+ content, partnering with major European streaming services. With this announcement, Samsung has established itself as the leader of the HDR (High Dynamic Range) specification industry. CHILI, The Explorers and MEGOGO – three key OTT (Over-the-top) service providers in Europe – will adopt 8K HDR10+ along with its support for 4K HDR10+.

HDR10+ technology optimizes brightness and maximizes the contrast ratio, making bright areas brighter and dark areas darker. The feature is available on all UHD TV and 2019 8K TV models, including Samsung’s lineup of QLED TVs.

“With HDR emerging as one of the most important technologies for ultra-high picture quality, our HDR10+ format enables every image to be accurately displayed on screen just as the creator intended,” said Hyogun Lee, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to strengthen our industry leadership through establishing partnerships with top streaming service providers and equipping our televisions with the technology needed to support the world’s first 8K HDR10+.”

“Our main goal in this partnership with Samsung is to offer the highest-quality content services available to our customers,” said Victor Chekanov, CEO at MEGOGO. “We will maintain our initiative in the Russian OTT service market and plan to provide dozens of HDR10+ movies to Samsung Smart TV users starting late this summer.”

Aside from the aforementioned OTT streaming services, several other industry-leading content partners are collaborating with Samsung. Rakuten TV, Deutsche Telekom’s Magenta TV and Videociety are all expected to adopt HDR10+ support for its respective VOD services between Q4 2019 and Q1 2020. Also, Molotov, the first French OTT streaming service to offer live and on-demand TV channels all in one place, is also considering to adopt HDR10+. The growing list of premiere content partners is a testament to the industry’s commitment to the best viewing experience possible for consumers.

HDR10+ content availability continues to expand. Recent announcements from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment debuting HDR10+ on UHD Blu-ray with “The Secret Life of Pets 2” and “Godzilla: King of the Monsters”, respectively, add to the UHD Blu-ray discs already released from Twentieth Century Fox and others.

Since Samsung began the HDR10+ logo certification program with Panasonic and 20th Century Fox last year, 81 companies have joined the program, boosting the program’s influence in the industry. Samsung has also strengthened its effort with the new opening of an HDR10+ center in China last December, following Korea, Japan and the U.S. With TV manufacturers such as Hisense obtaining HDR10+ certification in China, the HDR10+ alliance is expected to expand even further.

Along with HDR10+ certifications of existing TVs and smartphone products, Samsung is working to implement the program for its B2B products. For example, micro LED models such as The Wall Pro and The Wall Lux have been HDR10+ certified, and the company plans to expand the ecosystem to include Samsung’s line of LED products.

Samsung Electronics and Amazon Prime Video today announced the entire Prime Video HDR library is now available in HDR10+, a new open standard that leverages dynamic metadata to produce enhanced contrast and colors on an expanded range of televisions. The Prime Video HDR10+ catalogue includes hundreds of hours of content such as Prime Originals The Grand Tour, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Jean-Claude Van Johnson, The Tick and The Man in the High Castle plus hundreds of licensed titles. Prime Video is the first streaming service provider to deliver HDR10+ content to its users. HDR10+ is available on the entire Samsung 2017 UHD TV lineup – including the premium QLED TV models.

“We are thrilled to announce HDR10+ content for consumers,” said Sang Yoon Kim, Vice President of Smart TV Business Development at Samsung Electronics America. “The launch marks the first opportunity for consumers and the industry to experience HDR10+ technology through a streaming service.”

The HDR10+ technology on Prime Video incorporates dynamic metadata that allows high dynamic range (HDR) TVs to adjust brightness levels on a scene-by-scene or even frame-by-frame basis. By applying individualized tone mapping to each scene, HDR10+ delivers an incredible viewing experience for next generation Samsung displays. The picture quality offers an enhanced visual experience with more detailed expressions, brighter shadow areas and more accurate color renderings that stay true to the creator’s original intent. Through the utilization of the precise “Bezier” based tone-mapping guides, Amazon is able to deliver the optimal viewing experience across a variety of TV models.

“We’re dedicated to offering Prime Video members the best possible viewing experience, and we are very excited for our members around the world to experience our content in HDR10+,” said Greg Hart, Vice President of Prime Video. “The viewing experience of HDR10+ combined with Prime Video’s award-winning content is ushering in a new era of entertainment for consumers on these devices.”

With the launch of HDR10+ on Prime Video along with the HDR10+ logo and certification partnership formed earlier this year by Samsung, 20th Century Fox and Panasonic demonstrates the adoption and growth of HDR10+ as well as a growing commitment to delivering a premium HDR experience.

Some of the most popular content to watch at home in Ultra-High Definition (UHD) has been opera and ballet. The intricate costumes, ornate stage design and wondrous performances can come alive in UHD, so people can appreciate great performances even when they are unable to make it to the concert hall in person.

However, staging classical performances for television viewing has always required some changes to the production, even in UHD. Many theaters feature high-contrasts, with brightly lit singers and sets, while backgrounds can be quite dark. In the past, that forced production teams to turn up the lights for broadcasting or make other technical adjustments.

Now, Samsung is taking its classical streaming to the next level, thanks to High Dynamic Range (HDR). Together with the Vienna State Opera, Samsung is streaming some of the world’s best operas as they were intended to be viewed in theaters with their original production values.

“This technology is opening up a new dimension for us,” said Dominique Meyer, State Opera Director.

“HDR brings quite new, fantastic quality on multiple levels. HDR makes it possible for opera and ballet broadcasts to reproduce the original lighting of each production without compromises for the TV image.”

Samsung Austria has been offering streaming of the Vienna State Opera since 2013, adding UHD for selected content in 2014. But the quality made possible by HDR means viewers are now able to enjoy these broadcasts in unprecedented realism. In HDR mode, image content is brighter, the contrast is richer and the colors have more depth—closer to what the human eye can see.

Combined with industry-leading brightness and quality of quantum dot SUHD TV and UHD TV, Samsung TVs with HDR technology now provide more contrast and improves image areas which were once too dark or too light.

“With the new UHD livestream and HDR mode, we’ve laid another milestone in the development of streaming technology,” said Sunghan Kim, Managing Director of Samsung Electronics Austria. “The opera experience won’t just have higher audio quality, but will also broadcast in optimal visual quality to your TV screen.”

The HDR streaming began Nov. 29 with a performance of Verdi’s La Traviata, and further HDR livestreams are planned throughout the 2016/17 season. To sign up to watch a livestream, check out the Samsung Smart TV App or the Vienna State Opera’s streaming website.

At IFA 2016, Samsung Electronics will reinforce its leadership in the growing gaming market with the release of its most powerful and visually-compelling curved gaming monitors yet – the CFG70 (24- and 27-inch models) and CF791 (34-inch model) displays. Samsung will formally introduce the latest additions to its curved monitor portfolio at its IFA press conference, scheduled for September 1, 2016 at 11 a.m. inside the Messe Berlin event center’s City Cube Hall.

CFG70

As the first curved quantum dot gaming monitors, Samsung’s CFG70 and CF791 express brilliant colors across a 125-percent sRGB spectrum, while employing an environmentally-safe cadmium-free design. This luminance emphasizes a range of otherwise-hidden game details in both light and dark settings, offering unprecedented visual realism designed to capture the attention of even the most hardcore gamers.

To further amplify the details in today’s advanced gaming titles, each CFG70 and CF791 monitor undergoes rigorous factory calibration prior to shipment. This treatment includes optimization of various settings, including black gamma levels for enhanced brightness and white balance levels for temperature management, enabling gamers to enjoy a sharp and brilliant picture regardless of the game in play.

“As the gaming market continues to enjoy rapid worldwide growth, gamers expect advanced display technologies that can bring out the latest video game features and optimize the gameplay experience,” said Seog-gi Kim, Senior Vice President, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “By enhancing our pioneering curved gaming monitors with quantum dot technology, our CFG70 and CF791 displays further surround players and make them feel as if they are part of the game. We are excited to demonstrate this futuristic and immersive gaming environment at IFA 2016.”

Samsung’s quantum dot technology is already featured in the company’s UHD televisions. At IFA 2016, in line with the show’s innovation theme, Samsung will highlight how including this tested technology in the new CFG70 and CF791 displays brings the intricacies of today’s video games to life.

An Experience that’s Ahead of the Game

The new CFG70 curved monitor incorporates a host of user-friendly features to create a premium multi-sensory gaming destination. The CFG70’s “Super Arena” design aligns 1800R curvature with sound interactive LED lighting that lets players fully experience the thrill of victory. This format also includes 1 m/s moving picture response time, making it the first curved gaming monitor to offer such functionality. A rapid refresh rate of up to 144 Hz further ensures a seamless and uninterrupted presentation.

For added game management convenience, the CFG70 includes Samsung’s user-friendly Gaming UX OSD interface. During competition, gamers can access the interface’s intuitive on-screen dashboard to view all essential settings, ranging from response time to refresh rate, in a single glance. They can also easily adjust gameplay settings through shortcut hot keys located on the front and back of the monitor.

The Gaming Industry’s Sharpest Curve

With a 1500R curvature (indicating a curvature radius of 1,500 mm) design, Samsung’s CF791 is the most curved gaming monitor currently on the market. Combined with a 100 Hz refresh rate and embedded AMD FreeSync Technology, functionality that synchronizes screen refresh rates with gamers’ AMD graphics cards, the CF791 monitor offers consistent full-screen presentation. Additionally, the CF791’s ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio further preserves content quality during multi-screen competition.

Beyond its on-screen visual enhancements, Samsung’s new CF791 monitor features a sleek composition that adds ambience and style to any environment. The display’s boundless design removes visual distraction and helps gamers stay focused on the screen, rather than the display itself. Players also can customize the monitor’s alignment to match their unique ergonomic needs through a vertically-adjustable stand.

As part of the launch of its new monitors, Samsung will offer IFA 2016 attendees a first-hand opportunity to experience this redesigned, immersive arena through an interactive gaming zone. Samsung’s booth will include stations where visitors can sample several of today’s leading video game titles on the CFG70 and CF791 monitors. Supporting large-format SMART LED signage will broadcast the competition – and visual presentation – to the wider IFA audience.

Samsung Electronics announced today that all of its 2016 UHD TV models have attained the Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV certification from Digital Europe (DE), a collaborative body of European IT and consumer electronics businesses. Comprised of 62 corporate members and 37 National Trade Associations, Digital Europe is one of the most influential organizations representing the digital technology industry in Europe.

Samsung TVs, ranging from the 2016 SUHD TV lineup to the Series 6 UHD TVs, have met the strict standards for UHD TV certification as specified by DE, and will now bear the European UHD TV logo, as well as the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) label. Both certification labels will be on display on Samsung UHD TVs at this year’s IFA exhibition.

For its certification, DE has specifically defined a ‘Pixel’ as the minimum picture resolution element, capable of rendering the same luminance scale as the entire display. The horizontal and vertical pixel count must be of the complete red, green and blue triple sub-pixel block, while not counting additional non-RGB sub-pixels.

Additional criteria to earn the DE certification include:

Minimum native resolution of the display (e.g. LCD, PDP, OLED) or display engine (e.g. DLP) is 3840 x 2160 in 16:9 aspect ratio

Minimum supported colorimetric is at BT.709 or above

The display-device has at least one end-to-end signal path available to the user that does not render a UHD input at a frame rate or resolution lower than that received over the UHD interface from the source

The display-device has at least one end-to-end signal path available to the user that does not reduce the resolution, nor reduce the frame rate of a UHD input during processing prior to display

“Our TVs will serve as an important reference point for consumers when they are looking for a UHD TV that offers premium picture quality, even though they may not be as familiar with difficult technological terms and implications,” said Simon Sung, Senior Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We are confident that this new certification from Digital Europe, marked by a UHD logo, will give consumers additional confidence when purchasing a UHD TV.”

Beginning in September, Samsung will be rolling out new consumer-facing messages surrounding the picture quality of its UHD TVs, designed to help consumers make an informed decision when purchasing a UHD TV. The new messaging will also highlight the utilization of RGB panels in Samsung UHD TVs, with the effect of reducing distortion, as well as familiarize consumers with related UHD technologies.

Research published by Samsung, in partnership with Mindlab International, reveals that watching television content on an UHD TV is 38 percent more immersive than watching on Full HD.

The neuropsychological study – ‘Screen Sensation: The Ultra HD Effect’ – examined the physiological affects of watching UHD TV versus Full HD TV, in order to highlight the technological advancements of the Samsung SUHD TV range. Full HD (also known as 1080p), has over five times as much picture information as standard definition TV, and Ultra high definition (UHD) televisions are capable of displaying pictures with four times the detail of Full HD. The participants, aged 18-65, had electrodes attached to their scalps and were monitored via electroencephalography (EEG), electrodermal activity (EDA) and heart rate. The subjects watched footage from leading content streaming service Netflix and a European high profile football match, all in UHD and HD. To ensure impartiality, the brand of TV was concealed during the study.

[Samsung compares the body’s physiological response to watching Netflix (Chef’s Table) on a Samsung SUHD television, in comparison to Full High Definition TV.]

The results proved overwhelmingly that UHD TV was more ‘immersive’ than Full HD TV due to a combination of increased approach motivation (a measure associated with being attracted towards something), visual processing and beta power (a measure associated with active thinking or concentration). Immersion is highly increased during experiences like riding a roller coaster, buying a new product or going out on a good date. The fact that watching Samsung SUHD TV increases immersion suggests that it offers a more positive and rich viewer engagement than watching content on a Full HD screen.

The results will also please armchair football commentators, who will be able to feel more like a referee on the pitch, never missing an offside position again. Participants experienced 62 percent higher levels of visual processing when watching football on UHD TV, meaning that the brain is using more of its capacity to process visual information. In turn this mental function delivers a more detailed and richer representation of what’s really happening on the pitch.

During the study, subjects felt 25 percent more ‘in the moment’ when watching something for the first time on the Samsung SUHD TV. Subjects felt more ready to react to what was on the screen, more focused, attentive and concentrated – perfect for action film fans, who want their viewing experience heightened.

[Subjects watch Netflix (Sense8 and Chef’s Table) while being tested by Mindlab International for Samsung’s ‘Screen Sensation: The Ultra HD Effect’ study to examine the body’s physiological response to watching TV in Ultra HD, compared to Full HD.]

Neuropsychologist Dr. David Lewis, Chairman of Mindlab International says: “Ultra High Definition TV is a quantum leap in terms of viewing experience – this has been proved by the research we carried out for Samsung. It’s incredible how advancements in technology can create these significant physiological responses and is changing the way we experience content and entertainment.”

Other findings include:

Participants were significantly more drawn towards content on UHD screens compared to Full HD screens (20 percent difference) – creating a positive emotional reaction

When watching clips for the second or third time, people watching on UHD screens were more drawn to them than those watching them on HD screens (29 percent difference)

Michael Zoeller, Vice President, European Head of Visual Display at Samsung said: “From global sporting events, to highly anticipated TV series, to blockbuster films, people want to experience the huge variety of premium TV content available on bigger, brighter, crystal clear screens. Samsung is at the very forefront of evolving TV technology, offering the most breath-taking viewing experience possible, in the comfort of people’s homes. This research underlines the power of watching premium quality content on a technologically advanced television, like a Samsung SUHD TV.”

Neil Hunt, Chief Product Officer at Netflix said: “Ultra High Definition is challenging people’s expectations on the quality of television and our own programming is reflecting the leaps forward in picture quality, depth, detail and colour. The reality of TV is becoming sharper, making entertainment more immersive and enjoyable.”

Samsung’s revolutionary Curved SUHD TVs offer the finest UHD picture quality, depth and detail a UHD screen can offer. Ground breaking Nano Crystal Technology creates outstandingly precise, rich colours and brightness, and flat images come to life making entertainment more immersive and enjoyable.

Advancements in TV display technology have allowed manufacturers to produce high resolution HD screens that are larger and more detailed than ever before. All this is possible without sacrificing HD brilliance, and when it comes to size and distance, bigger and closer is usually better for getting the most out of your TV viewing experience. Samsung offers UHD TVs up to 105 inch and SUHD TVs up to 88 inch, both capable of playing 4K video.

One of the best advantages of these innovations in technology is that they help you get closer to the action than ever before. The higher pixel density of UHD TV allows viewers to sit close without worrying about eye strain. While watching TV for many hours may cause some people discomfort, it is usually the result of focusing on a bright object in an otherwise dark space. This causes the pupils to become more dilated. A bigger screen may seem counterintuitive, but the larger size actually fills more of the field of view, reducing the contrast between the brightness of the TV and the darkness of the room. This will decrease the tendency of overall eye fatigue. You can also lower the light output of your TV by reducing the backlight control. Lowering this setting, especially at night, will make watching TV much easier.

Immerse Yourself

For a truly immersive viewing experience, the ideal size of your TV depends on the distance you plan to sit from the screen. The better the image quality, the closer you should sit to see the full potential of your display.

UHD offers four times the number of pixels, and the more pixels, the more incredible the detail. With UHD and SUHD TVs, you can sit closer without image pixilation, getting more vivid detail than ever before.

Sitting too far from a UHD TV means your eyes will separate the pixels, and the image quality will not be fully realized. A good general rule to determine the optimal distance for watching 4K UHD TV or SUHD TV is to divide the size of the display in inches by ten, then multiply that number by feet. For example, for a 50 inch display, you should sit within five feet to see the full effect.

This chart helps illustrate how the optimal viewing distance decreases as the pixel quality increases.

The Right Angle

Viewing angles are another important factor in enjoying the best picture quality. Ideally, your TV should be parallel to your eyes, with no more than a 15 degree angle up or down and no more than a 40 degree angle to the left or right. If you are seated at a sharp angle, you may not be able to see the image clearly, as it is meant to be viewed.

Up Close and Personal

TV has played a large role in our lives since its introduction. Getting the best display quality from your TV is important in building bonding time with family, friends and in other relationships. UHD and SUHD offer viewers the opportunity to enjoy all your media more closely and in more detail than ever before, and Samsung continues to push the limits of high quality displays.

In recent months, UHD TV – also known as 4K TV – has emerged as the mainstream consumer option within the TV market. According to market forecast by IHS DisplaySearch, up to 230.8 million flat panel TVs are expected to be sold worldwide in 2015, with UHD TVs constituting 13.3% of the total shipment; which translates into 30.6 million units. Considering that the ratio of UHD TVs among the entire TV market was only 5.0% (11.7 million units) last year, it is fair to say that UHD TVs are now revitalizing the TV market.

Such explosive market response is largely due to the fact that UHD TVs deliver more life-like images with magnificent detail – a level of precision only comparable to what we can see with the naked eye.

The resolution of UHD TV’s is four-times greater than that of conventional full HD TVs of equal size – hence the name “4K” TVs. The industry regards the creation of UHD as the most revolutionary leap forward in visual technology since the development of full HD nearly a decade ago. However, with such picture quality at stake, it is important to understand the kind of ‘4K’ to look for in “UHD TVs.”

Pixel structure can impact native resolution

A display is comprised of pixels as the smallest unit. Every pixel needs to have all red, green and blue lights for each of them to produce accurate colors. (Red, green and blue lights on together make white; having all of them off makes black)

When these pixels add up, they look something like this:

RGBW is a modified version in which parts of RGB are transformed into white lights. However, not only do the whites in RGBW become holes when representing colors, they also distort the pixel structure, making it very difficult to define the sharp lines that are crucial to UHD. In other words, these white pixels restrict and limit the color palate a TV is capable of showing on its display panel, while diluting the overall picture quality by affecting clarity, brightness and sharpness.

This is what happens:

Because of this phenomenon, Nemko, the Norwegian Board for testing and approval of electrical equipment, concluded that “the resolution of RGBW is inferior to UHD resolution, and has some issues displaying UHD vertical color lines.”

Reproducibility with test patterns (Nemko)

VDE Testing and Certification Institute, a European technical-scientific association, also conducted an independent quality verification test. The results revealed that “with RGBW, there’s a loss of 25 percent clarity with horizontal resolution” and that when conducting a black and white dot test, “RGBW wasn’t capable of displaying the pattern accurately.”

Stricter standards to ensure true UHD images

Industry organizations, including The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and The Digital Europe (DE), recently established clear industry standards and UHD certification programs. Both DE and CEA have clearly defined UHD standards that a pixel must be able to independently reproduce a full range of colors. This means that a pixel is only considered a real pixel if the three primary colors of light – red, green, blue – are included, regardless of additional non-RGB sub pixels.

CEA, which is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), is made up of members from more than 2,000 companies from the consumer technology industry throughout the U.S. The organization is a trusted source within the consumer electronics industry. DE – which represents the digital technology industry in Europe – is made up of members from some of the world’s largest IT, telecoms and consumer electronics companies and national associations from across Europe. As the #1 TV maker 9 years running, Samsung has acquired UHD certification marks from both DE and CEA for all of its 2015 UHD TV models.

Samsung has been making TVs since the 70s and have strived to offer the best to customers. As a part of this endeavor, Samsung Electronics encourages leaders in the TV industry to commit to an industry-wide effort to deliver the most accurate product information to consumers.
