Rahaf Abu Mayyaleh is a Jordanian youth educator and member of Generation17, a Samsung and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) partnership empowering young people who are contributing to the Global Goals.

Since 2020, the initiative has supported Young Leaders worldwide with Samsung Galaxy technology, mentorship and networking opportunities to amplify their stories and solutions.

Growing up, Rahaf saw how digital skills training was out of reach for young people. Now, she’s changing that by creating accessible tech education programs for the next generation.

Rahaf Abu Mayyaleh knows what even one opportunity can do. As a teenager, she got the chance to take a programming course that changed her life. It showed her what was possible when you have access to tech education and mentorship. “It was really the first course I had in robotics,” Rahaf says. “That experience was a turning point.”

Youth unemployment in her home country is nearly 40% according to the UN, and many young people have limited access to the digital skills that could lead to employment. The tech field can feel inaccessible, reserved for those with resources and connections.

Rahaf set out to give young people what that programming course had given her: not just skills, but confidence and a sense of possibility.

Empowering Young People to “Innovate and Go”

In 2017, at age 15, Rahaf joined an initiative with friends to teach digital skills to young people who had no access to this kind of education. By 2023, this had grown into the registered organization IBTKRGO, which means “Innovate and Go.”

Through workshops, summer camps and one-on-one mentorship aligned with the UN’s Global Goals for quality education (Goal 4) and decent work (Goal 8), IBTKRGO has trained over 750 young people. More than 30 workshops have been offered free to vulnerable communities, including refugees.

▲ Rahaf teaches a workshop in Amman, where students learn programming through hands-on collaboration.

Tech Skills for Tomorrow’s Workforce

Rahaf designed educational kits with recyclable packaging where students learn programming, robotics and AI using electronic components that can be upcycled after use. “We’re providing them with quality digital education, which is very important for today’s and tomorrow’s job market,” says Rahaf, who is now 23.

But technology isn’t just what Rahaf teaches; it’s how she runs IBTKRGO. It allows her to coordinate workshops across Jordan, manage her team of volunteers and document her work for social media to raise awareness.

During classes, students get hands-on with computers and micro:bits — small, programmable devices designed for learning coding basics — to develop their skills and build simple robots. The engaging approach helps make abstract concepts tangible, giving children an early experience with technology that can spark curiosity and inspire them to learn more. “With so many young people struggling to find work, these skills can be life-changing,” she says.

▲ A student views micro:bit programming modules on screen.

▲ Workshop participants, together with Rahaf, display upcycled creations including a guitar and octopus made from the electronic components used in classes.

Turning Regional Learning Into Global Impact

Looking ahead, Rahaf hopes to turn IBTKRGO into “a world platform” that offers more services online and reaches beyond Jordan. “My dream is to expand this work across the Middle East and beyond,” she says, “to show that when youth have access to tech education and believe in themselves, they become the next generation of leaders and changemakers.”

Renata Koch Alvarenga is a member of Generation17, a partnership between Samsung and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that empowers young people driving progress on the 17 Global Goals.

Since 2020, the initiative has supported Young Leaders worldwide with Samsung Galaxy technology, mentorship and networking opportunities to amplify their stories and advance solutions across all 17 Global Goals.

When devastating floods submerged her home state in Brazil, Renata Koch Alvarenga questioned whether her work was making a difference. Instead of retreating, she doubled down, launching an ambitious program to prepare women and youth for the climate crisis ahead.

The 17 Global Goals refer to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. They cover interrelated areas such as quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, climate action, life on land and below water, among others.

The images still haunt her. In May 2024, the state of Rio Grande do Sul faced the worst flooding in its history, submerging Renata Koch Alvarenga’s hometown of Porto Alegre under record-breaking floodwaters. Nearly 600,000 people were displaced, streets disappeared, and the airport remained closed for months.

▲ The 2024 floods in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, affected nearly 2.4 million people and caused widespread damage across 478 municipalities, including Porto Alegre, shown here.

“My heart was definitely breaking,” she recalls. “I saw so many places that I grew up going to, such as parks and museums, destroyed.”

What happened in Brazil reflects a growing global threat. Climate change is heating oceans and shifting rainfall patterns, intensifying extreme weather events like floods. By 2100, coastal flood risk is expected to increase fivefold, threatening more than 70 million people worldwide, according to UNDP.

After years of climate advocacy and educational outreach, the devastation — some of it in the very communities Renata had worked to protect — left her questioning if her efforts were enough. “I like to say that I’m a climate optimist and always like to see the glass half full, but that was a key moment in which it was very hard to keep being an optimist,” she says. “It was very hard to keep going.”

For Renata, the choice became clear: give in to doubt or double down on her mission.

Discovering Climate Justice

Renata’s path to climate activism began in college when she received the opportunity to attend COP21 — the 21st United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties — held in Paris in 2015, where world leaders negotiated the landmark Paris Agreement. “I saw multiple diplomats say, ‘I don’t really understand why we’re talking about gender. This has nothing to do with climate change,’” she says.

This dismissive response sparked something within her. Renata’s studies had shown that the climate crisis impacts people differently based on gender and economic status — with women often facing the harshest consequences while being excluded from decision-making. This imbalance lies at the heart of climate justice. According to UN Women, by 2050, climate change may push up to 158 million more women and girls into extreme poverty, compared to 16 million more men and boys.

Renata left COP21 determined to change things.

▲ Inspired by what she witnessed in Paris, Renata worked to create pathways for marginalized voices in climate advocacy.

Leveraging Technology for Impact

Following years of advocacy and study, Renata founded EmpoderaClima, a climate and gender advocacy and education organization with a simple principle: knowledge is empowerment, and empowerment is equality. It originally launched as a website in 2019 using technology to democratize climate information.

“Technology is essential for EmpoderaClima because it allows us to reach people we otherwise couldn’t,” says Renata. “The scale and multiplying effect of social media and our digital database is incredibly powerful,” she adds.

By translating resources on climate and gender equity into French, Spanish and Portuguese, EmpoderaClima broke down language barriers that excluded communities from international climate discussions. And social media enabled the organization to scale rapidly, reaching more than 60,000 people across the world.

▲ The EmpoderaClima website features climate change resources in multiple languages, making them accessible to communities across Latin America and beyond.

Expanding Beyond Digital

As EmpoderaClima grew, so did its initiatives. The organization now runs student workshops, offers climate and leadership mentorship programs for women, and leads advocacy efforts that bring young women to global stages.

Through school visits, Renata’s team takes climate education to youth in vulnerable communities, highlighting the United Nations’ Global Goals with a focus on quality education (Goal 4), gender equality (Goal 5) and climate action (Goal 13).

▲ Students in flood-impacted São Leopoldo, Brazil, learn how their climate experiences connect to global policy.

Brazil’s floods last year exposed gaps in emergency response, including services that address the needs of women and children. In response, Renata launched the Women for Climate Resilience program, where local leaders gain skills in disaster preparedness, mental health and climate adaptation, then carry the knowledge back to their communities. So far, the initiative has reached women from three regions of Brazil.

“Today I feel empowered, strengthened, renewed,” said Janaína dos Santos, a social worker in Porto Alegre, at a recent Women for Climate Resilience workshop.

▲ Women leaders participate in EmpoderaClima’s climate resilience workshop, learning skills and strategies to better prepare for future climate disasters.

Building an Inclusive Climate Future

As climate disasters become more frequent and intense, Renata says her work has never felt more important. “My dream for the future,” she says, “is expanding our reach globally and building an even bigger network of women who are empowered and ready to take action for climate justice.” Technology, she believes, has been vital to EmpoderaClima’s evolution and will be just as critical in scaling impact in the years ahead.

For Renata, the flood marks in her hometown represent not only loss, but also resilience and an opportunity to rebuild with justice at the center. Her vision is clear: a world where women and youth don’t just endure climate challenges but shape climate solutions.

Samsung Electronics today announced the addition of five new Young Leaders to Generation17, an initiative in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that supports young changemakers driving progress to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the ‘Global Goals.’

Since launching Generation17 in 2020, Samsung and UNDP have supported Young Leaders from across Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and North America, addressing critical issues that span all 17 Global Goals. The partnership has provided these Young Leaders with the latest Samsung Galaxy technology, along with networking and mentorship opportunities, to amplify their stories and advance their work. The newest cohort, focused on advancing solutions in marine conservation, environmental sustainability, gender equality and quality education, reflects Samsung’s continued commitment to a more equitable future for all.

“As we accelerate efforts to achieve the Global Goals, we are proud to welcome the next cohort of Young Leaders to Generation17,” said Stephanie Choi, EVP & Head of Marketing, Mobile eXperience Business, Samsung Electronics. “Their passion, creativity and commitment to addressing global challenges embody the spirit of innovation that fuels meaningful change. We look forward to seeing how these five new Young Leaders will leverage technology for good to inspire action, mobilize communities and create lasting impact for a more sustainable and equitable world.”

Five Global Changemakers

The newest Generation17 Young Leaders were selected from hundreds of applicants and bring new areas of expertise to the initiative, expanding the reach of Generation17. As members of the Generation17 community, they will leverage technology and global platforms to advocate for the issues that matter most to them.

Brigitta Gunawan (Indonesia) — An ocean-climate advocate who has engaged with over 15,000 people in 100+ locations with environmental education and marine conservation opportunities through her organizations 30×30 Indonesia and Diverseas.

“At 17, it struck me that we were nothing but a small speck in a big world that remains largely unexplored — that if we continued as bystanders, we would see this fragile ecosystem cripple within our lifetime — so there I was, ready to co-create a future where people and planet prosper.”

José Francisco Ochoa (Ecuador) — A biologist and co-founder of Academia del Océano, an edtech platform promoting marine conservation, digital tools and sustainability in Spanish-speaking communities, equipping thousands with the tools to protect marine ecosystems.

Soumya Dabriwal (India) — Co-founder of Project Baala, a social enterprise addressing menstrual hygiene and reproductive health access through innovative solutions, including the sustainable distribution of reusable sanitary products and educational initiatives to de-stigmatize women’s health while generating employment for women.

“Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) is a fundamental human right. Through collective advocacy and innovation, we can break barriers, challenge stigmas and build a world where everyone has the freedom and resources to make informed choices about their own bodies and futures.”

Elevating Youth Voices for Global Action

Since the launch of Generation17 in 2020, Samsung and UNDP have partnered to empower Young Leaders — helping them amplify their stories and accelerate their efforts to drive meaningful change in communities across the world. Additionally, the initiative provides opportunities for Young Leaders to showcase their impact on a global scale.

In the coming months, these Young Leaders will attend various major global events, where they will engage with policymakers, innovators and fellow changemakers. Through these platforms, they will contribute to international conversations on sustainable development and drive tangible progress toward the Global Goals, ensuring that youth voices play a crucial role in shaping a more sustainable future.

This year, Generation17 alum Tamara Gondo took the stage at Samsung’s Galaxy Tech Forum, highlighting the company’s commitment to sustainability and the power of collaboration with like-minded partners to tackle worldwide challenges. She also shared how the initiative has helped scale her organization’s impact since she joined in 2022.

“Young people are the future of global development, and with fewer than five years left to achieve the Global Goals, the time to act is now,” said Achim Steiner, Administrator of UNDP. “Through our long-standing partnership with Samsung, we are empowering youth to advance solutions that address climate and human rights challenges and to inspire a new generation to join the fight for a more sustainable and just future.”

Generation17 reflects the shared commitment of Samsung and UNDP to harness technology for positive impact. Their collaboration began in 2019 with the launch of the Samsung Global Goals App — a mobile platform that educates users about the Goals while enabling them to contribute through everyday use of their Galaxy devices. As detailed in Samsung’s Global Goals Report, as of September 2024, the app has been installed on nearly 300 million Samsung Galaxy devices worldwide — including smartphones, tablets and smartwatches — and has helped generate more than $20 million USD to support UNDP’s global environmental and social initiatives.

Samsung Electronics believes small efforts can make a big impact, especially when collaborating with like-minded partners. For the past five years, Samsung and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have worked together with one shared goal — harnessing technology to effect global change.

Central to this mission is the belief in the potential of young people, particularly millennials and Gen Z. As tech-savvy global citizens, their optimism and conviction drive progress on issues like climate change and social equity. With the right tools and platforms, they have the power to influence policymakers and businesses toward a more sustainable future.

As the 2030 deadline for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) approaches, Samsung and UNDP remain committed to the Global Goals. Both organizations have made significant strides in creating real-world impact by prioritizing innovation. In celebration of United Nations Day, Samsung has released a report that marks our five-year relationship, highlighting progress in raising awareness of the Global Goals through initiatives like the Samsung Global Goals app and Generation17.

“We believe in the power of collective effort to create a better future for upcoming generations and using technology for the greater good,” said Stephanie Choi, EVP & Head of Marketing, Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics. “Our partnership with UNDP over the past five years has been a meaningful step in this journey, as we’ve worked together to support young changemakers and raise awareness of the Global Goals. We’re grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a better future for all, and we look forward to continuing our journey to 2030 with the Galaxy community.”

“The only way we are going to confront the world’s biggest challenges is through cooperation. Our partnership with Samsung shows the power of true collaboration between the public and private sectors,” added Achim Steiner, Administrator of UNDP. “We are proud of the progress that we’ve seen in both the Samsung Global Goals app and the Generation17 initiative to empower youth to advance the SDGs. We look forward to continuing and exploring new frontiers in our partnership to drive sustainable development in the years ahead.”

Samsung then matches all proceeds from the in-app ads, maximizing our collaborative efforts to support UNDP’s work in advancing the Global Goals and contributing to their achievement.

To further engage Galaxy users, we introduced new interactive features such as the Donation Leader Board in 2023.
Generation17

In 2020, Samsung and UNDP launched Generation17 to support young changemakers advancing the Global Goals with the belief in the power of youth to create meaningful change. The initiative provides technology, mentorship and networking opportunities to Young Leaders worldwide — supporting 16 such individuals across six regions to date and sharing their stories through Samsung and UNDP’s global platforms.

Through the initiative, the Generation17 Young Leaders have been able to attend major global events such as the Mobile World Congress, the UN Economic and Social Council Youth Forum and the UN Summit of the Future Action Days. These engagements give them a platform to collaborate with global decision-makers across different sectors.

In just four years, UNDP and Samsung, through Generation17, have supported Young Leaders who believe this initiative has significantly contributed to achieving remarkable results and making a resounding impact on their communities. While Generation17 has provided valuable resources and opened doors for the Young Leaders, their success is ultimately a testament to their drive, creativity, entrepreneurial skills, networks and passion for advancing the Global Goals. Through these combined efforts, the Young Leaders feel that this initiative has scaled the impact of their work, allowing them to reach more people within their communities, raise awareness of their work and advance all 17 Global Goals through the power of technology.

Samsung Newsroom highlights how Generation17 leaders Efe Johnson, Thùy Anh Ngô and Tafara Makaza are leveraging technology to address challenges such as reproductive health education, care for the elderly, economic mobility and more — demonstrating how innovative solutions can inspire change and action.

Efe Johnson

A reproductive and sexual health advocate from Kaduna, Nigeria, Efe Johnson founded Xari Africa to break taboos surrounding sexual and reproductive health across Africa after experiencing shame and confusion during her first menstrual period. Xari Africa educates girls on topics like menstruation, birth control and sexual health.

Xari Africa has impacted 4,500 girls across Africa through school workshops, online courses and Efe’s practical health guide Just Period It. She now aims to expand her platform to reach 1 million girls.

Thùy Anh Ngô founded HASU, a mobile platform in Vietnam that improves the physical, mental and social well-being of older adults. Inspired by her late grandfather’s fear of burdening his family, she developed HASU to meet the needs of Vietnam’s aging population. The app offers health advice, exercise routines and social forums to keep seniors connected and active.

Thùy Anh has concentrated on stabilizing internal operations and optimizing services for seniors over the past year, contributing to HASU reaching over 50,000 individuals. Her newest program, a memoir-writing service, has been helping clients from various backgrounds — including key opinion leaders, politicians and retired professionals — preserve and cherish their treasured memories.

Samsung is on a journey to harness the power of technology to open more possibilities for people and the planet. To celebrate Earth Day, Samsung would like to reflect on how we’re advancing our mission and creating a more sustainable future — whether we’re increasing the use of recycled materials in our Galaxy mobile devices or collaborating with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Creating a Global Platform for Change

Preserving the future of our planet is not a solo job. We teamed up with UNDP to support young changemakers on the frontlines of climate change who are delivering meaningful progress for our collective future. Through Generation17,1 Samsung elevates their platforms to a global scale and inspires them through mentorship, peer learning and networking.

Today, we want to spotlight some of our incredible Generation17 Young Leaders and their work to address environmental challenges.

Recently, he advocated for the approval of more than 40 socio-environmental laws and organized digital communications campaigns for the environment that reached more than 150 million users. In 2023, Eco House conducted workshops with other organizations to educate more than 60,000 state workers on environmental laws for the public sector. These trainings were the result of the Mandatory Ecological Education for State Workers Law,3 a piece of legislation that Eco House advocated for. The organization also launched Eco News to cover and distribute socio-environmental information.

Finding the Balance Between Innovation and the Environment

Samsung is reimagining how Galaxy technology is designed and packaged to do more with less when it comes to our planet’s natural resources. For the last decade, we have worked to innovate high-performance components that are made with recycled materials.

We took an important step in 2022 when we incorporated recycled discarded fishing nets, also known as ghost nets, in the Galaxy S22 series. Recycled materials can now be found in all Galaxy mobile products, including smartphones, tablets, PCs and wearables.1 At the same time, we have expanded our use to a greater variety of materials, from several different types of plastics to metals and glass.

▲ Visualizing how the Galaxy S24 series is designed and packaged to do more with less for people and the planet.

The Galaxy S24 series2 takes these actions one step further. For the first time in any Galaxy device, we developed key device components with recycled cobalt, rare earth elements and steel. The battery3 in the Galaxy S24 Ultra contains a minimum of 50% recycled cobalt, and 100% recycled rare earth elements4 and a minimum of 40% recycled steel5 were used in the speakers.

Samsung has a long history of addressing the pervasive challenge of plastic waste through our recycled material innovations, and recycled plastics continue to play an important role in the Galaxy S24 series. The Galaxy S24 series maintains our use of recycled plastics sourced from discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles.

The recycled ocean-bound plastic6 material was created in partnership with global organizations who collected discarded fishing nets abandoned near the oceans. The nets’ properties were separated, cleaned and extruded before optimizing them into high-performance, recycled polyamide pellets. Similarly, the recycled polycarbonate and PET materials are sourced from discarded water barrels and PET bottles that were ground, filtered and melted down with other additives. This process helps us transform these fragile resources into high-performance optimized materials that uphold Samsung’s state-of-the-art design and high-quality standards. We also teamed up with other organizations to upcycle discarded Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) that was generated from shoe manufacturing.

This is a culmination of our continued efforts with our partners to transform fragile plastic wastes into high performance material used in Galaxy devices. With the Galaxy S24 series, our goal by end of 2024 is to help recover nearly 100 metric tons of recycled plastics7, which is equivalent to 10 million empty plastic bottles.8

When it comes to recycled metal, the Galaxy S24 series incorporates recycled aluminum9 that originates from scrap metal generated during manufacturing. The aluminum scrap is re-melted, filtered for impurities and then recycled to make components within Samsung’s product development process. With the Galaxy S24 series, our goal by end of 2024 is to recover about 110 metric tons of recycled aluminum, which is the equivalent of 9 million soda cans.10

Additionally, the Galaxy S24 series comes in a packaging box made using 100% recycled paper material. By the end of 2024, we hope to recover nearly 2,760 metric tons of recycled paper with Galaxy S24 series, which is equivalent of 552 million pieces of A4 paper.11 If stacked on top of one another, that would be approximately the same height as 71 Burj Khalifas,12 which is the tallest building in the world.

From the smallest components to the newest, most premium features, the Galaxy S24 series represents a significant stride in Samsung’s sustainability journey, and we remain committed to scaling these innovations in years to come. This work will help us shift to more circular designs and build technology that supports a more sustainable future.

For more information about Samsung’s sustainability efforts, please visit our Sustainability website.

1 Recycled materials can be found in all Galaxy devices released in and after 2022.
2 The Galaxy S24 series features a variety of recycled materials including pre- or post-consumer recycled plastics, including Polyamide (PA), Polycarbonate (PC), Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), and Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) in both internal and external components. It also includes components made with pre-consumer recycled aluminum and glass, as well as pre- and post-consumer recycled cobalt, rare earth elements (neodymium), and steel. For more information about the recycled materials in the Galaxy S24 series, please review Samsung’s product environmental reports on the Sustainability website.
3 The batteries of the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy S24+ include a minimum of 50% pre- and post-consumer recycled cobalt. The battery of the Galaxy S24 includes a minimum of 10% pre- and post-consumer recycled cobalt. The above measurements are based on weight.
4The speakers of the Galaxy S24 series include 100% pre- and post-consumer recycled neodymium. The above measurements are based on weight.
Galaxy users can now enjoy new limited-edition wallpapers and additional gifts by showing support for the Global Goals.

Samsung Global Goals App Helps Raise Awareness and Donations

The Samsung Global Goals app, serviced in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is available in 89 languages, with nearly 300 million Galaxy users engaging with the app worldwide.1 Through the app, Samsung invites the Galaxy community to learn about the Global Goals and contribute to the Goals of their choosing by donating directly or watching in-app advertisements to generate donations. Only four years after launching, the Galaxy community has raised over USD 17 million to support the Global Goals and promote resiliency around the world.

Despite our collective efforts to help the world achieve the Global Goals by 2030, we stand at a critical moment. The United Nations recently reported that global events have exacerbated systemic challenges and that, in some areas, our progress has either stalled or gone into reverse. Now more than ever, calls to demonstrate commitment to the Global Goals ring louder and Samsung believes that the Galaxy community can help make a difference.

Thank-You Gifts, a New Feature To Encourage the Galaxy Community To Take More Action

Thank-you gifts, following the announcement of the Samsung Global Goals app Donation Leaderboard last year, are the latest in Samsung’s ongoing efforts to encourage the Galaxy community to take action. Through this new feature, Samsung Global Goals app users will be the first to redeem limited-edition wallpapers to showcase on their Samsung Galaxy smartphones and watch faces. Samsung will initially offer three collections of wallpaper and watch face options, highlighting different endangered species and habitats, including black rhinos, sea turtles, sea otters, whale sharks, coral reefs and grasslands among others. These designs will be offered in cool black-and-white and chrome styles.

Samsung Electronics today announced that three new Young Leaders will join Generation17, an initiative in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support young changemakers working to achieve the 17 Global Goals.1 The addition of these three Young Leaders will help educate people about critical global challenges and the solutions needed to deliver a more prosperous future by 2030.

“We are thrilled to welcome these three innovative leaders to the Galaxy community and Generation17,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics. “These Young Leaders will inspire the Galaxy community to make positive changes in their daily lives, with their dedication to harness technology and open possibilities for a more equitable future. Each embodies the ingenuity and innovative spirit that we need to engage more people in helping to achieve the Global Goals.”

The New Young Leaders

For the first time, Samsung and UNDP conducted an open call that rallied thousands of passionate young people from all over the world to apply to join Generation17. This new group of Generation17 Young Leaders, chosen from a competitive pool of candidates, will add new perspectives to the initiative, and their projects will bring forth new solutions in education, skills and training, and health equity.

Zubair Junjunia (United Kingdom): Social entrepreneur and founder of ZNotes, a global learning platform enabling fair and equal access to education that has impacted four million students globally.

“I was inspired to build an education platform after witnessing the uneven playing field of education. We must empower youth to create an equitable education system, which is why I am excited to join Generation17 and bring awareness to global education challenges and inspire young people to stand up for causes they believe in.”

Priscilla Efe Johnson (Nigeria): Gender equality activist working to de-stigmatize women’s health through Xari Africa, a female-led organization providing girls with access to reproductive and sexual health resources.

“Reproductive and sexual health is everybody’s business. This fight, this passion, is personal. That is why I am thrilled to be selected as a member of Generation17, working in partnership with Samsung and UNDP to elevate my voice and expand access and education to women’s healthcare across the globe.”

Mock Yi Jun (Singapore): Education leader and co-founder of Advisory Singapore, a youth-led charity dedicated to empowering young people from all walks of life to make informed career and education choices.

“Every person, no matter their background or socio-economic status, deserves a chance to pursue their aspirations. Generation17 is the perfect platform to enable more young people like me to empower individuals to take their education and career journey into their own hands.”

Amplifying Youth Leadership on a Global Stage

Samsung and UNDP launched Generation17 in October 2020, with the mission to magnify the voices and impactful work of young people accelerating progress toward the Global Goals. Since the launch, Samsung and UNDP have gathered 17 Young Leaders across Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and North America working on issues that encompass all 17 of the Global Goals.

Together, Samsung and UNDP provide the Young Leaders with mentorship and the latest Samsung Galaxy technology as well as access to agenda-setting events and other opportunities to elevate their platforms and connect with their peers and cross-sector, global decision makers. Generation17 Young Leaders have participated in various events, including Samsung’s Unpacked, Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum, Stockholm+50 and the United Nations General Assembly.

“To achieve the Global Goals, we need authentic action from young people — those on the frontlines of today’s most pressing issues — to build back progress and support for each goal,” said Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator. “Through our partnership with Samsung, we aim to foster the growth of these Young Leaders as they address critical issues such as the climate crisis and human rights concerns to build a more resilient society.”

▲ Three Generation17 Leaders at the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity

This is why in 2019, Samsung Electronics partnered with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to launch the Samsung Global Goals (SGG) app. The SGG app allows the Galaxy community to donate directly to the Global Goals, use lock screens to increase ad-earnings and generate funding by watching advertisements in the app. The SGG app helps users learn more about the Global Goals and contribute funding to the Goals that mean the most to them.

Through a newly released app feature, the Donation Leaderboard, Samsung is opening new opportunities for the Galaxy community to get engaged with the Global Goals. By creating a ranking system for donations, the Donation Leaderboard is energizing users to donate to the Goals, track donation progress; and encourage friends, family and other Galaxy users to do the same.

▲ View of the Donation Leaderboard home screen

Accessed through the Donate section of the Samsung Global Goals app,1 the Donation Leaderboard shows users how much they have donated to specific Global Goals, as well as how their donation ranks in comparison to users in their country or users globally.2 By providing greater visibility into donation history, Samsung hopes this motivates Galaxy users to improve their ranking on the Donation Leaderboard, all for the benefit of progressing the Global Goals.

▲ Donation Leaderboard visual from the Profile Picture screen

The Samsung Global Goals app has been a powerful way for the Galaxy community to work together in support of the Global Goals. Just a few months ago, a new donation milestone was reached, with USD10 million having been raised so far through the app and donated to help UNDP promote resilience and accelerate progress for the Goals. Samsung hopes the Donation Leaderboard will help continue this momentum by offering a new, fun, interactive way for the Galaxy community to contribute to the Goals that mean the most to them. To date, Galaxy users have directed the most donations toward Goal 2: Zero Hunger, followed by Goal 1: No Poverty and Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.

▲ Samsung Global Goals app seen on this image is simulated for illustrative purposes.

The Global Goals, established in 2015, are a collection of 17 goals that world leaders agreed to achieve by 2030. These goals have the power to stop climate change, fight inequality, end poverty, among other pressing global challenges. To achieve the Global Goals, we need to accelerate our individual and collective effort.

Samsung is committed to using the power of technology to provide opportunities for the Galaxy community to take action in support of the Global Goals. Together, we have the power to create meaningful change. Visit the Samsung Global Goals app to advance the Goals that matter most to you.

During the panel discussions, Samsung sustainability leaders and partners spoke about the steps that Samsung is taking today — and in the future — to put sustainability at the center of its innovations. The event unveiled new, sustainable features in the Galaxy S23 series, shining a light on how Samsung is working to imbed sustainability throughout the entire design and production lifecycle. These efforts embody Samsung’s focus on designing more sustainable, innovative devices that minimize environmental impact without compromising on quality.

Galaxy of Impact also emphasized the importance for organizations to work together across sectors and build innovative tools and technology that allow communities all over the world to achieve the Global Goals. Leaders from Samsung’s partner organization, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and its youth-led initiative Generation17, a joint project between Samsung and the UNDP launched in 2020 to further progress on the Global Goals, spoke to the power of global corporations to address today’s most pressing environmental and societal issues.

The first panel highlighted how Samsung and the Galaxy S23 series enable every Galaxy user to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.

Samsung technology and sustainability leaders discussed their work toward achieving 2025 and 2030 goals by innovating to design more sustainable products. The new Galaxy S23 series represents these efforts by minimizing Samsung’s environmental footprint while maximizing performance.

Inhee Chung, Vice President of the Corporate Sustainability Center at Samsung Electronics, kicked off the panel by providing an overview of Samsung’s new commitment to its concept of Everyday Sustainability. “It’s the idea that by building sustainability into the product design and user experience, we, and the billions that use our products, can contribute to a healthier, more livable planet,” she stated.

Chung noted, “Everyday Sustainability is grounded in a goal to reach net zero carbon emissions by the end of 2030 for our Device eXperience (DX) Division, and as part of the DX Division, Samsung’s Mobile eXperience (MX) Business is essential in helping us deliver on our commitment.” She added, “MX Business is aiming to achieve its own sustainability goals — incorporate recycled materials in all mobile products, eliminate plastics in packaging, achieve zero standby power consumption for smartphone chargers and achieve zero waste to landfill by 2025.”

Won-Joon Choi, Executive Vice President, Head of Mobile R&D Office, Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, focused on how Samsung’s sustainability commitments come to life in the new Galaxy S23 series. “For Samsung, breakthroughs in sustainability can be breakthroughs in performance,” he emphasized. “We aim to create an experience in which you don’t have to sacrifice the things you love to be a more eco-conscious consumer.” He added the Galaxy S23 series was “built with innovation and sustainability without compromise, and it will enable users to make a positive impact while enjoying a great mobile experience.”

Choi explained that, through the Galaxy S23 series, Samsung is “delivering a high-performance device that meets the highest of quality standards while also using more recycled materials than any other Galaxy smartphone to date.” He then pointed out that “Samsung increased the amount of recycled materials from six internal components in the Galaxy S22 Ultra to 12 internal and external components in the Galaxy S23 Ultra.”

He went on to explain that the Galaxy S23 series used more recycled plastics and newly incorporated pre-consumer recycled aluminum and glass.

Choi highlighted all of these efforts are “meaningful steps in the right direction, helping us expand the Galaxy legacy to be more than just innovation for performance. These are innovations designed with the planet and you in mind.”

Mark Newton, Senior Director, Head of Corporate Sustainability at Samsung Electronics America, highlighted that “we’re working diligently to extend the lifecycle of our devices to encourage users to reliably experience the optimized performance of the Galaxy for as long as possible.” He emphasized, “The Galaxy S23 series was built to last longer, optimizing durability with IP68 water resistance and dust proofing. We also provide five years of security updates and four generations of OS upgrades.”

He added, “In the U.S., customers can use our Certified Re-Newed and Trade-In programs to send us their old devices to be refurbished and reused. We also partner with iFixit, the leading online repair community, to empower users to fix their own devices with self-repair kits.” He also touched on how Samsung will continue “expanding efforts to improve resource circularity over the entire product lifecycle.”

Newton also explained that the Galaxy S23 series features redesigned packaging that uses 100% recycled paper for the packaging box and front and back cover protectors.

Each panelist expressed their excitement and hopes for the future of sustainability at Samsung. All agreed that there will be even larger challenges ahead; however, the panelists stressed that by working together, Samsung can make a positive, tangible impact for people and the planet.

The second panel dove deep into Samsung’s partnership with the UNDP and their joint efforts to achieve the Global Goals.

Together, Samsung and the UNDP created the Samsung Global Goals app, which raises funds for UNDP projects and amplifies stories about Generation17, a group of 14 Young Leaders from various countries around the world working toward the Global Goals and inspiring young people to do the same. Leaders from UNDP and Samsung were joined by two Generation17 Young Leaders, who called on the audience to use their voices to accelerate progress for the 2030 Agenda.

Boaz Paldi, Chief Creative Officer at the UNDP, opened the panel by stating, “When it comes to the 17 Global Goals, I cannot stress enough the importance of what is at stake here.” He continued, “To help the world achieve [the Global Goals] by 2030, UNDP plays an essential role in implementing integrated solutions in the communities that are furthest behind. In short, we help communities and governments build the structures and policies that help address these global challenges.”

Paldi also explained the UNDP’s partnership with Samsung to unveil the power behind Samsung’s vast resources and global scale. He noted, “In 2019, we created the Samsung Global Goals app, an education and donation-based mobile app that informs people about the Global Goals and encourages them to take action just by using their smartphone. Today, the app is pre-installed on nearly 300 million Galaxy devices worldwide. And thanks to the dedication and passion of the global Galaxy community, we have helped generate over USD10 million towards UNDP’s global programs and initiatives.”

The Samsung Global Goals app’s creator, Sergey Lossev, Senior Director of Project Management at Samsung Electronics, highlighted that he’s always “been passionate about making the world a better place.” In order to accomplish this, his team “decided to create a centralized hub for social impact right on a device that has become an essential part of Galaxy smartphones. The app aims to increase awareness and raise funds for UNDP’s work around the world.”

Two Generation17 Young Leaders sat beside Paldi and Lossev and reiterated how UNDP, Samsung and the Samsung Global Goals app have greatly benefited their platforms.

Tamara Gondo, Generation17 Young Leader (Indonesia), explained that by joining Generation17 and earning recognition from Samsung and UNDP, her B2B social enterprise Liberty Society “has been exposed to more than 10 million people worldwide, opening our doors to connect to partners in Malaysia, London and today, in San Francisco.” Gondo continued, “For organizations like Samsung, UNDP and news media, it’s about using their power and influence to effect change within their spheres of influence.”

Máximo Mazzocco, Generation Young Leader (Argentina), followed by explaining that the Generation17 partnership has helped grow his environmental nonprofit Eco House, “helping us scale from an organization for youth in Argentina to one of the biggest youth-led organizations in the climate movement.” He added that we’ve been “given the chance to change the narrative and make an impact on a global scale,” and we must work across sectors in order to make progress toward achieving the Global Goals.

Harnessing the Power of Galaxy to Offer Sustainable Solutions

Galaxy of Impact highlights the progress that Samsung has made to integrate sustainability into each level of the business. This event also represents Samsung’s challenging journey to achieve its 2025 and 2030 commitments and make progress toward the Global Goals. The path forward will not be easy; however, Samsung leaders are dedicated to collaborating with partners to design solutions that allow each and every Galaxy user to incorporate sustainability into their daily lives.

Samsung Electronics today announced the company has reached a significant milestone in its journey to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), or the Global Goals, with a contribution of more than USD10 million to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The funds were generated through the Samsung Global Goals app and will help UNDP promote resilience and accelerate progress around the world.

Established by the United Nations in 2015, the Global Goals provide a shared blueprint of ambitious milestones for a more equitable, just and sustainable world by 2030. The 17 Global Goals promote collaboration and collective action to address inequality, climate change, ecosystem degradation, education and other pressing global challenges. Samsung embarked on delivering innovative solutions in support of the Global Goals and in 2019 by partnering with UNDP to launch the Samsung Global Goals app. The company’s global Galaxy community has since joined the movement by leveraging the app as a simple yet meaningful tool to make a difference in their daily lives.

Taking Collective Action for the Goals

“At Samsung, we know technology plays a crucial role in solving some of the biggest challenges the world is facing right now,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics. “Through our partnership with UNDP and the Samsung Global Goals app, the Galaxy community has been instrumental in advancing the Global Goals. We want to extend our gratitude to our users for making this incredible milestone possible.”

Actions taken on the Samsung Global Goals app support UNDP’s impactful work. This includes meaningfully engaging youth to achieve the SDGs. UNDP implements policies, advances programs, champions youth initiatives in over 100 countries and supports over 900 youth partnerships.

“As we approach the halfway point of the 2030 deadline, this coming year is crucial in our pursuit to advance the Global Goals,” said UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner. “While the world has faced recent setbacks, we are energized by the progress made through this partnership. Together with Samsung, we must reinvigorate our combined efforts to achieve the Goals and inspire the next generation to take action with us.”

Scaling Our Impact

The Samsung Global Goals app is installed on nearly 300 million Galaxy devices worldwide, including smartphones, tablets and smartwatches. Through the app, Samsung raises awareness for the Global Goals while also empowering users to take small actions that amount to big change. The Samsung Global Goals app enables users to donate directly, use wallpapers to increase ad-earnings or generate funding by watching advertisements in the app. To maximize impact, Samsung matches all proceeds through in-app advertisements.1

Since launching the Samsung Global Goals app in 2019, Samsung has expanded its partnership with UNDP with Generation17, an initiative that elevates the voices of 14 young leaders making meaningful impacts in their communities around the world. The Generation17 Young Leaders play an essential role in inspiring people to deliver impact for the Global Goals.

Samsung also strives to support the Global Goals through its business operations. The company has aligned its corporate ESG strategy with the Global Goals to identify business priorities and communicate performance according to the Goals. The company is also a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact, an initiative that encourages businesses to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies.

Every year, the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity brings countless brands and marketing industry leaders together to collaborate in shaping the next wave of creativity. However, with less than eight years left, the United Nations has reported that the world is not on track to meet the Global Goals by 2030. Last week, Samsung Electronics and three Generation17 Young Leaders attended Cannes Lions to bring attention to the role brands can play in helping to create a more sustainable future for all. Generation17 is a partnership between Samsung and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with the aim of magnifying the voices, stories and ingenuity of young leaders working to help the world achieve the Global Goals.

Benjamin Braun, Chief Marketing Officer of Samsung Europe, and Generation17 Young Leaders Kristian Kampmann (Denmark), Nadine Khaouli (Lebanon) and Tafara Makaza (Zimbabwe) participated in a series of activities throughout the week, highlighting how technology and creativity can empower the global community, including young changemakers, to make an impact.

▲ Generation17 Young Leaders (Kristian, Nadine and Tafara)

Working for the Future: Samsung and Generation17’s Support of UN Global Goals

Samsung partnered with Project Everyone and Karmarama (part of Accenture Song) to host a panel discussion on how brands can transform talk into action, with a specific focus on uplifting the younger generation and leveraging technology to mobilize communities for the Global Goals.

Benjamin highlighted that “55% of young people are saying that their voices are not being heard.” At Samsung he continued, “We have access to technology” and are “empowering young people by giving them the technology they need to amplify their cause.”

Samsung has been taking an active role by amplifying the voices of young people and harnessing the power of technology and information through Generation17 and the Samsung Global Goals App.

▲ Main stage session held at Theatre Claude Debuusy

During the panel, Nadine emphasized Samsung and UNDP’s support in her fight to alleviate poverty and provide crisis relief resources across her home country of Lebanon. She shared “My mission is to bring dignity to every person in Lebanon,” she said. “I couldn’t imagine a better pairing of brands to help me amplify my voice.”

▲ Benjamin Braun and Nadine Khaouli

Samsung is using its scale to raise awareness for the Global Goals and empower communities to take measurable steps to make an impact. In line with this, Samsung hosted the Samsung Global Goals Photobooth at Cannes Lions, an interactive experience in which festival attendees took fun photos while learning more about the Global Goals and the Samsung Global Goals App. This week also marked the start of Samsung’s work as a Business Avenger, a group of likeminded companies and organizations that are continuously seeking ways to innovate, collaborate and drive progress towards the Global Goals.

Through Generation17 and the Samsung Global Goals App, Samsung is working with UNDP to provide necessary support for the Global Goals. Through these initiatives, Samsung has taken an active role in elevating the voices of the younger generation and harnessing the power of technology to make a difference. These efforts further demonstrate how brands can take tangible action to make a positive impact while empowering people all over the world to do the same.

When I started my career at Samsung 25 years ago, I was a young engineer with a passion for technology and all it could do. Over the years, the capacity of mobile innovation has exceeded even my ambitious expectations. It has brought us conveniences and capabilities that make our lives better, but it has also given us the opportunity to be better. The ability to connect without proximity empowers us to break down barriers and work together to make progress. And with humanity facing some of its most complex challenges yet, we need to collaborate and innovate solutions more than ever before. That’s why I believe mobile technology has a vital role to play in helping us protect our planet.

Samsung has always challenged what’s possible with technology. And now, we are taking our next step towards putting sustainability at the center of our innovations. From eco-conscious materials to global partnerships, we are exploring every opportunity to help power the world with mobile technology that serves as a tool for positive change.

Innovation With Impact

We’ve been on a journey for years at Samsung, marrying sustainability and innovation by using recycled materials in our smartphones, wearables and accessories. In addition to our ongoing effort to use more eco-conscious materials including recycled PCM (post-consumer materials), the new Galaxy smartphones and tablets that were unveiled at our latest Unpacked used select components containing 20% recycled ocean-bound plastic from discarded fishing nets.

We focused our innovation efforts on a pervasive and especially hazardous type of plastic waste that is harming marine life and our natural ecosystems — discarded fishing nets. Every year, 640,000 tons of fishing nets are abandoned in and around our oceans. With help from like-minded partners, we found a way to repurpose them into a new, high-performance material that can be incorporated into critical components of the Galaxy S22 series. From now on, more and more Galaxy devices will play a small part in reducing plastic waste in our oceans.

I know we still have a long way to go. And at Mobile World Congress 2022, we will share our next wave of innovations that incorporate recycled ocean-bound plastics.

Using Technology as a Force for Good

At Samsung, we believe in making mobile technology that has positive environmental impact and putting the power of our Galaxy ecosystem into the hands of passionate change makers.

I’ve seen this firsthand with our growing Generation17 initiative, which Samsung leads in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme. Generation17 empowers young activists to take on pressing issues like climate change, education and more, so the world can make headway towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, also known as the Global Goals, by 2030. And with the recent addition of six new Young Leaders, the program now spans countries in Africa, Asia & The Pacific, Europe, North America, Latin America and the Middle East and supports work across all 17 Global Goals.

That’s how mobile innovation fuels transformation. It amplifies simple actions and individual voices and brings them together to amount to big, global change.

We Need Collective Action

I am in awe of the impactful ways people are helping to change the world with Galaxy, and I promise our work does not end here. Samsung will continue developing innovative technology that bridges barriers, connects communities and addresses the climate crisis.

Samsung is ready to do more. We will take real action, hold ourselves accountable and share our journey — from our successes to our challenges and lessons learned. We will act with our industry peers, with developers, with the Galaxy community, with everyone, to strengthen technology as a force for good.

Samsung Electronics announced that Generation17, an initiative in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is growing with the introduction of six new Young Leaders. The individuals will join the initiative’s existing Young Leaders to mobilize global communities, educate people about the urgency of the Global Goals and build impactful and inclusive solutions that help promote prosperity while protecting the planet by 2030.

“We continue to be inspired by young, innovative visionaries who prove that technology can be a force for good,” said Stephanie Choi, EVP & CMO of the MX Business at Samsung Electronics. “I am honored to welcome these six advocates into the Generation17 community. They embody the type of leadership that our world needs to build more sustainable societies, and I am excited to see how they inspire more people to learn about the 17 Global Goals and join our collective mission to achieve a brighter future.”

With the six advocates, grassroots organizers and entrepreneurs, Generation17 expands to all corners of the world, spanning countries in Africa, Asia, CIS & Europe, North America, Latin America and the Middle East. Their work will raise awareness of global solutions to the urgent issues facing humanity in 2022 and in years to come, as they advance digital innovation, empower refugee women through education and job trainings, coach the elderly about physical and mental health and more:

AY Young (United States): Musician who produces albums and concerts that share engaging ways to tackle the global energy poverty issue.

Kristian Kampmann (Denmark): Leader of UNLEASH, an innovation lab that sparks creative and inclusive solutions for the Global Goals.

Nora Altwaijri (Saudi Arabia): Software engineer who educates people on the Global Goals and connects them to impactful resources through digital platforms.

Oğuz Ergen (Turkey): Activist who rallies NGOs, academia and government together to address the climate crisis and protect the coastal Aegean region.

Tamara Dewi Gondo Soerijo (Indonesia): Social enterprise founder who empowers refugee women by providing upskilling opportunities and access to market.

Thuy Anh Ngo (Vietnam): Entrepreneur who launched a mobile app that equips the elderly with physical and mental health advice and activities.

“2022 is a critical year in our pursuit to achieve the Global Goals, as the COVID-19 pandemic has reversed decades of progress in global human development,” said UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner. “Despite this somber reality, I am confident that the strength and perseverance of the young generation will help us build back better from the crisis and propel positive change on education, inclusion and climate. These six Young Leaders and the entire Generation17 community remind us that we need to step up our efforts to achieve the Global Goals and protect our collective futures.”

An Initiative Driven by and for Young People

Since its launch, Generation17 has been spearheaded by and in support of young people. Samsung and UNDP continuously engage with the Young Leaders to determine their biggest needs and discover support systems to help scale and advance their work. Together, the two entities provide the latest Galaxy technology, amplify their stories on global platforms, facilitate peer networking and best-practice sharing, offer mentorship opportunities and invite them to global agenda-setting stages like the UN ECOSOC Youth Forum.

In 2022 and beyond, Samsung and UNDP are committed to exploring new ways to partner with the Young Leaders. This includes convening the first-ever “Generation17 Youth Dialogues,” an event to rally Global Goals advocates from all over the world for knowledge sharing on how people can best navigate the Global Goals and achieve a more sustainable future.

The 14 Young Leaders will connect people to solutions that actively contribute to the Global Goals, including the Samsung Global Goals app. Launched in 2019 by Samsung and UNDP, the app provides learning opportunities on the Global Goals and shares easy and meaningful ways to make a difference. The app is currently installed on nearly 200 million Galaxy devices and has generated more than US$4 million in donations to educate the Galaxy community about the world’s most pressing challenges and strengthen UNDP’s work in supporting countries to implement integrated solutions for the Global Goals.

As inspiring as the Global Goals are in their ambition and altruism, they can also be daunting. The magnitude and complexity of the problems they address are significant, to say the least. This is why young people have such an important role to play. Their unabashed determination, along with their creativity, vision, and sense of urgency – not to mention, their tech savviness – is critical to the progress needed on these 17 goals between now and the 2030 deadline.

Take our Generation17 young leaders. In the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges, these changemakers from Argentina to Ukraine have discovered how to turn their passions into something much bigger – solutions that scale beyond their communities and contribute to the Global Goals. That’s the essence of Generation17, Samsung’s partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

These leaders are also eager to inspire others and to share what they know. Here, they share five ways to make a difference.

1. Humanize the Problem

Tafara Makaza, 25, creator of the ridesharing and employment apps Tuverl and Fixa, Zimbabwe:

I always try to view technology in the context of the ordinary African person and what they need.

Look at Goal 1: No poverty. That’s a big phrase, but what does it mean exactly? I look at Zimbabwe and look at the poor people and ask, “What’s the root of that problem?” or maybe, “Why don’t they have jobs?” From there you can see maybe it’s because they don’t have access to certain services or certain technology that could enable them.

So, I always feel like it’s our job to figure out how to contextualize these big problems and break them down into small problems that we can tackle. Because wherever you have the biggest problems, you have the biggest opportunities.

2. Tap Every Resource

Yejin Choi, 27, creator of the educational app DoBrain, South Korea:

I faced a lot of challenges when I first created my app. I wasn’t a technician or developer, so it was hard to build DoBrain. I failed a lot and made many mistakes early on. But I started connecting with people who had the skills I didn’t have – developers, designers, and technicians. They had the same vision as me and believed education changes the world. Together, we’ve built something amazing.

I think everyone can find a way to use their own abilities to help other people and to solve even just one problem. Everyone can be a hero.

Daniel Calarco, 23, founder of the youth-empowerment nonprofit Observatório Internacional da Juventude (International Youth Watch), Brazil:

I think everyone must remember that the goal is to make things better, not to save the world. To stay motivated, I remind myself that I cannot do everything, but that I can mobilize people to work with me. We have to do the most we can with the resources available to us. Every person and every contribution counts.

3. Celebrate Common Ground

Máximo Mazzocco, 31, founder of the environmental nonprofit Eco House, Argentina:

I grew up seeing waste and trash all around me and wondering how we could do it better. I realized that if we want to do it better, we have to do it differently. And to make a difference, we have to work together. We must find what we have in common and start from there.

Once you start, people notice and get involved. Then you can think bigger. You can say, “Okay, I’m not alone. It’s not only this street we can help, but we can change the whole city. We can change the country.” Little actions taken by many people can make a big change.

4. Empathize With Your Audience

Shomy Chowdhury, 26, co-founder of the global nonprofit Awareness 360, Bangladesh:

When we gave a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) training session, we introduced some games and quizzes, and we played Bengali music that they liked. They welcomed us with all their hearts, and it was just so beautiful. A crucial part of driving change is making everyone feel comfortable so they can be their authentic selves.

Sadya Touré, 23, founder of the women-empowerment organization Mali Musso, Mali:

Anyone challenging the status quo is going to face resistance. In my experience, it was difficult to talk about inequality and women’s rights with leaders in some of Africa’s villages. That wasn’t a topic they historically prioritized or were open to discussing. You have to respect their boundaries, but it’s still possible to make change. For us, we said we wanted to talk about a health issue. That was important to them, so they let us come in and educate the girls.

5. Take That First Step

Nadine Khaouli, 25, co-founder of the families-outreach initiative Kafe be Kafak (Hand in Hand), Lebanon:

There are a lot of messages in the world, but the most important one is to believe in yourself. Take the first step towards real change in your communities, because nothing is impossible. Just be patient, and work to enhance your skills to take the steps toward change.

Yurii Romashko, 28, co-founder of the think tank Institute of Analysis and Advocacy (IAA), Ukraine:

I don’t like to use the word “problem,” because a problem is a task. I prefer “challenges.” Challenges motivate me. I see a challenge in front of me, and I start. I tell myself the first step has the potential to change public policy and change people’s ways of thinking.

Dear Galaxy Community,

Over the past year, we’ve all been reminded of technology’s vital role in our lives. It has kept us connected in these difficult times and enabled us to work and learn, no matter where we are in the world. But beyond that, it has kept us hopeful. Technology has inspired us and enabled us to do good by serving as a powerful tool capable of bringing communities together to drive positive change.

I would like to spotlight a group of young people who, in the midst of a global pandemic, have truly embodied this spirit of innovation. They’re finding creative ways to harness technology to defy barriers and build a better world at a time when we urgently need to make progress.

In celebration of the United Nations’ 75th Anniversary, Samsung and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) expanded our partnership to launch Generation17, an initiative to magnify the voices of young leaders who are helping to achieve the Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

Our Generation17 Young Leaders are committed activists, each with the strong will and unwavering determination to build a better future for all by 2030. Spanning Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America, they are already making incredible strides on pressing global challenges.

A Generation Driven by Purpose

Now more than ever, we must elevate the voice of young generations and unlock their collective power to advance the Global Goals. Our future depends on their ingenuity, dedication and optimism. We need their abiding sense of purpose.

Millennials and Gen Z are, by and large, fluent in technology. More than two-thirds of their generation have a smartphone.1 They’re also natural changemakers. More than 86% believe they can make a difference.2 They are passionate activists who truly seek to make positive change in everything they do and are determined to create a better world for all. And because they’ve grown up in a largely borderless, online world, Samsung aims to amplify their spirit of global community. Both generations are visionary, but they need resources that help them realize their aspirations and help society continue to grow and evolve.

That’s why Samsung and the UNDP are supporting the next generation. We’re propelling young people to do good by giving them the technology to create change and the means to make their voices heard. Samsung is proudly using our global reach to help these young leaders tell their stories and advance their missions, while the UNDP is leveraging its issue expertise and grassroots operations to supply young leaders with the necessary skills and resources they need to make a meaningful impact.

After first partnering with the UNDP over two years ago to transform the Galaxy ecosystem into a powerful enabler for collective activism, this marks an important next step in our ongoing journey towards helping the world achieve the Global Goals in less than 10 years.

Taking Action, Together

The journey to achieve the Global Goals is not easy. It requires a committed and coordinated effort across the public and private sectors, as well as groups and individuals. As Generation17 demonstrates, we can all enact big change if we tap our passion and determination together. And the Galaxy community has the opportunity to embrace our purpose and help shape a better future.

Today, we’re welcoming even more young leaders to our Generation17 community, a group that once again shows the power of technology to make these critical connections. From Daniel Calarco’s quest for improved equality in Brazil; Nadine Khaouli’s inspiring crisis response in Lebanon; Yurii Romashko’s use of technology to power data-based decision making; and to Yejin Choi’s AI-based approach to children’s wellbeing in South Korea – it’s only the beginning.

These young innovators are an integral part of the Samsung Galaxy community, and they do not stand alone. Even the smallest everyday actions can add up to exponential good and that’s why we’re grateful to the millions of Galaxy users who are standing with our young leaders. As of January, the Samsung Global Goals app — a platform where Galaxy users can learn about the Goals and work together for greater good — has been installed on over 100 million Galaxy smartphones worldwide.

We’re proud of our shared mission and impactful partnership with the UNDP and we are continuing to explore new ways to evolve our collaboration. We will continue to find ways to support young leaders and identify new opportunities to mobilize our Galaxy community to achieve the Global Goals.

We invite each and every one of you to learn more about the young leaders and join us in our cause by visiting https://generation17.undp.org.

Samsung Electronics today announced that four additional Young Leaders will join Generation17, a joint initiative with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to accelerate progress towards achieving the 17 Global Goals, or the Sustainable Development Goals. Together, they are an urgent call for action around the world to build peace and prosperity for people and the planet by 2030.

“We are proud to expand our mission and use our global reach and purposeful innovations to support a new group of inspirational young activists, who once again share Samsung’s commitment to deliver meaningful solutions that bring communities together,” said Stephanie Choi, SVP & Head of Marketing of the Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “These four leaders are integral members of the Galaxy community, and they have our full support and encouragement to continue rallying us all to advance the Global Goals and help build a better future for everyone.”

This group of Generation17 Young Leaders is made up of four visionaries combatting inequality, promoting human rights issues and educating their generation on the Global Goals across Latin America, the Middle East, Asia and Eastern Europe:

Daniel Calarco (Brazil): A 23-year-old human rights activist who founded the International Youth Watch to create better opportunities for young people from marginalized communities.

Nadine Khaouli (Lebanon): A 25-year-old community activist who leads disaster relief efforts for Lebanon in response to the 2020 Beirut Port explosion and the COVID-19 pandemic through her organization Kafe be Kafak.

Yejin Choi (South Korea): A 26-year-old cognitive therapist turned CEO who founded DoBrain, an AI-based mobile app that aims to improve early-education opportunities for children with disabilities.

Yurii Romashko (Ukraine): A 28-year-old transparency advocate who founded the think tank Institute of Analysis and Advocacy that empowers his community to make more informed, data-based decisions in their daily lives.

The Second Cohort of Generation17 Young Leaders

Over the next year, the introduction of these new agents of change will strengthen the initiative’s inclusivity and broaden its global scale, as they spearhead previously unaddressed yet critical issues across the Global Goals.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened generational divides around the world, and, now more than ever, it’s important that younger generations have the opportunities and resources to be heard and to be active participants in the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda,” said UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner. “Together, with Samsung, we are supporting young changemakers as they build sustainable policies, communities and progress during this pivotal time. I look forward to working with this group of Young Leaders and exploring new paths for a green and equitable recovery.”

Elevating the Voice of a Generation

Generation17 was born in October 2020 with the mission to inspire an entire generation of tech savvy young individuals to achieve the Global Goals in less than 10 years. Since launch, an inaugural cohort of Young Leaders, including Máximo Mazzocco, Sadya Touré, Shomy Chowdhury and Tafara Makaza, have championed the effort, using Samsung’s and UNDP’s support to broaden their reach.

Over the last few months, Samsung and UNDP increased the visibility and impact of their work through mentorship with the UNDP Youth Global Programme and the Global Policy Network, participation in global and regional development-related events, such as the #Youth4ClimateLive series and the Karma Dialogue, and engagement with country offices and partners.

Samsung also equipped the Young Leaders with the latest Galaxy technology to better connect them with their peers and raised awareness of their work across its global network using personalized content and the reach of its online channels. Exemplifying the need to act together, the Young Leaders leveraged their expanded network to exchange ideas and best practices and collaborate for peer-to-peer engagements. Support for the first cohort will continue throughout the year, starting with participation in the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum 2021.

Both groups of Young Leaders will immerse themselves in the seamless and connected Galaxy ecosystem and use their Galaxy devices to collaborate online and brainstorm innovative solutions to their shared challenges, ultimately addressing the diversity and complexity of the Global Goals and expanding their network of strong activists.

The Young Leaders will continue to engage with the Global Goals using the Samsung Global Goals app, which is installed on over 100 million Galaxy smartphones and has provided more than US$1.5 million in donations for UNDP. The app received an Honorable Mention in the SDG Action Awards and was an Honoree for Software & Mobile Apps, Tech for a Better World in the CES 2020 Innovations Award. It was also shortlisted in the Reuters’ Responsible Business Awards for SDG Impact.

In celebration of the United Nations’ 75th Anniversary, Samsung Electronics today announced Generation17, an initiative in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to inspire action to achieve the Global Goals – a set of 17 interlinked goals that provide a blueprint to achieve a better future for all by 2030.

Generation17 merges the power of Samsung Galaxy smartphone technology with UNDP’s platform to galvanize an entire generation of young people to achieve the 17 Global Goals in less than ten years. The initiative will elevate the stories and share the impactful work of young leaders who are already making considerable strides in support of the Global Goals.

“We are excited to better connect these inspiring advocates to their peers, enable their generation to take bold action on the Goals, and make their voices heard loud and clear with the latest Galaxy technology and our shared vision,” said Dr. TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics. “With a purpose as grand as the Global Goals, we strongly believe a collaborative, rallying effort will be imperative in sparking meaningful change.”

The 2020 cohort of Generation17 is made up of four trailblazers who are mobilizing communities from Mali and Argentina, to Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, to tackle some of the most pressing challenges of our lifetimes:

Máximo Mazzocco (Argentina): A 30-year old who founded Eco House, a nonprofit that promotes sustainable development through education, volunteering, advocacy and environmental certification

Sadya Touré (Mali): A 23-year-old author who founded Mali Musso, an organization which empowers women through education to destigmatize gender-based violence

Shomy Chowdhury (Bangladesh): A 26-year-old Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) activist seeking to ensure access to clean water and sanitation for all through her global organization, Awareness 360, working across 23 countries

Tafara Makaza (Zimbabwe): A 24-year-old junior at Williams College, in Williamstown, MA, studying astrophysics who has launched diverse startups to build transportation, energy, agriculture and education solutions

The 2020 Cohort of Generation17 Young Leaders

Millennials and Gen Z wield incredible influence in catalyzing change as tech savvy global citizens in an unprecedently borderless world, with their unwavering and relentless optimism leading the charge on climate change and racial justice and influencing policymakers and businesses to chart a more sustainable course for our collective future. Generation17 is our answer to their call-to-action.

“Young people are advancing the Global Goals through their work as innovators, entrepreneurs and advocates, and we must properly engage them today for the success of our global agenda tomorrow,” said UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner. “They harness incredible power in advocating for positive, systemic change, and we must support them in their roles as torchbearers of the Global Goals. This initiative complements other initiatives across the UN system, strengthening the foundations for a UN that delivers with and for young people through the UN Youth Strategy: Youth2030.”

UNDP and Samsung will provide mentorship, networking opportunities, and Galaxy devices to help broaden the reach of each of the young leaders’ voices and strengthen their organizations and businesses. They will also use the Samsung Global Goals app, which is preinstalled on the latest Galaxy smartphones, to show users how they can make a difference across the 17 Global Goals in their daily lives. Through educational content, the app aims to increase awareness of the Goals and has so far raised $1M in donations1 for UNDP.

Each September, thousands of world leaders gather through the United Nations General Assembly to advance a cooperative framework. This year, the United Nations celebrates its 75th anniversary and kicks off the “Decade of Action,” a ten year sprint to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals – also known as the Global Goals – the universal platform to create a better world by 2030.

As leaders meet virtually for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began, they face an unprecedented challenge over the next ten years to continue achieving progress on the Global Goals in the face of the biggest global health crisis of our time. COVID-19 has changed the world as we know it and, as leaders of the tech industry, we know we have a responsibility to help move society forward.

We recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of our partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations lead agency on the socio-economic response to the pandemic. This partnership allowed us to transform the Galaxy smartphone into a powerful platform through our Samsung Global Goals app and mobilize the Galaxy community to take small actions toward the achievement of the Global Goals. And today, we’re excited to announce that thanks to our dedicated Galaxy fans usage of the app, we’ve raised over $1M in donations to the UNDP.

Simple Acts Generating Meaningful Change

The funds generated by Galaxy users have contributed directly to UNDP’s progress towards the Global Goals and have supported major achievements in improving the quality of education, combating climate change, and advocating for gender equality.

The Samsung Global Goals app has also supported the immediate crisis and the long-term recovery from COVID-19. Galaxy users, through the app, were able to direct increased funding to the WHO’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund and UNDP’s ongoing effort to build resilience for those deeply affected by the pandemic.

More Tools to Create a Big Impact

During this crucial time, Samsung and UNDP have provided users with the ability to make an impact through simple acts. Galaxy users can engage with short ads to generate revenue for UNDP and use wallpapers to increase ad-earnings while their phone is charging. This places an easy solution that makes a notable difference directly into the hands of Galaxy users to use whenever and wherever they want.

Additionally, as part of our partnership with UNDP, Samsung introduced special edition accessories, and a portion of revenue from the sales of each accessory goes to UNDP in support of the Global Goals. The accessories include the Global Goals Edition cover for the Note10, Note10+, and the Kvadrat case for S20+, as well as the Global Goals Edition wireless charger stand.

Power the Global Goals with the New Galaxy S20 FE

To continue this incredible momentum, the Samsung Global Goals app is pre-installed on all of the latest Galaxy smartphones, including the Galaxy S20 FE. The newly released Galaxy S20 FE brings our purposeful innovations to even more users around the world, so they can use the best of Galaxy to do the things they love like discovering new ways to make a difference.

Young people today are driven by purpose, and we continue to witness their unwavering passion to make a positive impact on society – using their smartphones to connect with each other and drive change. Now equipped with the Samsung Global Goals app on the Galaxy S20 FE, millions of people can unite around the Global Goals with a direct path to action in more than 170 countries, and help the world accomplish lasting progress by 2030.

Samsung Global Goals app on the Galaxy S20 FE

Continued Commitment

We are dedicated to empowering the Galaxy community to take small actions that can add up to incredible change. We now have less than ten years to achieve the Global Goals by 2030, and we are committed to our partnership with UNDP to help build a better future for all.

In fact, the past few months we’ve been working together with UNDP on a new initiative that will mobilize a cohort of young leaders who embody our joint mission of positive change and are at the forefront of building innovative solutions. We’re excited to share more details soon.

We are steadfast in our belief that technology is an instrument of incredible impact, and together, we will rally an entire generation – and the world – to act on the Global Goals.

Today marks the one year anniversary of a significant partnership between Samsung and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Together, we transformed the Galaxy smartphone into a powerful platform for consumers to take small actions that can add up to incredible change for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals – also known as the Global Goals – by 2030.

Installed on over 45 million Galaxy smartphones worldwide, the Samsung Global Goals app offers simple ways for our extensive Galaxy community of users to learn about the Global Goals, spread awareness to their friends and family and generate funding for UNDP’s global work to develop sustainable policies and build resilient institutions in more than 170 countries.

Our Contribution to the Global Goals

Activities on the Samsung Global Goal app show that the Galaxy community is most interested in supporting Goal 2: Zero Hunger, followed by Goal 1: No Poverty and Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Galaxy users routinely interacted with educational content for these specific Goals to better understand our global challenges and find new ways to support the Goals in their daily lives. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Galaxy users demonstrated increased interest in Goal 3: Good Health & Wellbeing, rising to the third most engaged Goal in March and April.

Over the last year, Galaxy users across the United States, South Korea, Brazil, India, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and other countries activated the Samsung Global Goals app to contribute to UNDP’s major achievements in its six Signature Solutions: reduce poverty, strengthen effective, inclusive and accountable governance, enhance national prevention and recovery capacities for resilient societies, promote nature-based solutions for a sustainable planet, close the energy gap and strengthen gender equality.

With the support of Samsung and the Global Goals app, UNDP has promoted lifelong learning opportunities for people around the world, by improving the conditions and skills of young people with intellectual disabilities in Bolivia, expanding educational opportunities for young Afghan women, and also providing training and startup funding for young entrepreneurs focused on online education in Libya. UNDP has also supported more than $14 million in core resources to fight climate change and strengthen women’s leadership in natural resources management in 97 countries.

Mobilizing the Galaxy Community

With just under ten years left to achieve the Global Goals, Samsung and UNDP created the Samsung Global Goals app in August 2019 as a helpful tool to mobilize the Galaxy community to gain a deeper understanding of the Goals and work together for a greater good.

Through educational content and a comprehensive guide to each of the 17 Global Goals, Galaxy users learn about the challenges and interconnectivity across the Goals. They can then transform this knowledge into action by making a big difference with fast and simple solutions. Users can donate directly to UNDP, engage with short ads to generate revenue for UNDP and use wallpapers to increase ad-earnings while the phone is charging. To help maximize the impact of these small acts, Samsung matches1 all proceeds through in-app advertisements.

Additionally, the Samsung Global Goals app has helped the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNDP’s relief efforts for the immediate crisis and long-term repercussions of COVID-19. Samsung and UNDP worked together to create necessary content to provide Galaxy users with accurate and concise information about the virus and ultimately to counter growing rates of misinformation. The Galaxy community also used the app to direct increased funding to the WHO’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund and UNDP’s ongoing effort to build resilience for those deeply affected by the pandemic.

Continued Commitment

In the first year of the Samsung Global Goals app, Samsung and UNDP empowered people around the world to spend their time at home and on the go for social good. We inspired their action to support UNDP’s important work to integrate the Global Goals into policies and initiatives around the world.

As we look to the future, Samsung will continue to expand our partnership with UNDP and seek new ways to motivate the Galaxy community to learn, share and act together to help achieve the Global Goals by 2030.

As a company that looks to the future, Samsung innovates to change people’s lives for the better. Not only does this mean creating technologies and devices that allow users to better navigate their daily lives, but it also takes the form of allowing consumers to feel confident that, with a Samsung product, they have made an environmentally-friendly choice.

Thanks to a partnership with premium Danish textile brand Kvadrat, the latest Samsung accessories for the Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy Watch Active2 are no exception.

Accessories for Good

When developing accessories for the Galaxy S20 series and other of the company’s latest products, Samsung made the decision to partner with Kvadrat, a company rooted in Scandinavian design tradition that has acquired the European Union’s Ecolabel certification – a certification known for its strict judgment criteria.

Following the sustainable practice of upcycling, the special Galaxy S20+ phone case is made up of re-purposed 500ml plastic bottles that are melted and reformulated into textile yarns. Upcycling, also known as ‘creative reuse’, is the process of transforming end-of-life products into new materials that not only are of better quality than the original, but also benefit the environment. In the case of Kvadrat’s yarn-making process, one plastic bottle can be repurposed to produce 2 Galaxy S20+ phone cases.

These recycled yarns help to reduce the number of plastic bottles found in landfills and are produced in a way that reduces the amount of carbon dioxide emitted during manufacturing as compared with traditional material processes. The plastic bottle-sourced yarn is formed in an eco-friendly process that preserves non-renewable energy resources. Samsung is the first company among major brands in the mobile industry to have produced a phone case for its flagship device using recycled materials.

The Galaxy S20+ phone case made with textiles by Kvadrat follows the sustainable practice of upcycling by transforming end-of-life plastic bottles into recycled polyester yarns, from which cases can then be fashioned.

These recycled yarns are eco-friendly because they reduce the amount of PET bottles in landfills; in the U.S. alone, it is estimated that over 60 million of these bottles end up in landfills every single day. Each recycled 500ml plastic bottle can create 2 phone cases, allowing users the peace of mind that with the purchase of this special phone case, they are actively contributing to the reduction of plastic pollution.

The recycled yarns are also manufactured in a way that reduces carbon dioxide emissions as compared to traditional processes. Compared to conventional polyester production methods, Kvadrat’s recycled yarns are formed in a process that consumes less energy and preserves precious oil resources.

Galaxy S20+ case made with Kvadrat textiles product images

Last year, Samsung announced a partnership with the UN Development Programme to support the Sustainable Development Goals (also known as the Global Goals) which address some of the biggest challenges faced around the world, including the fight for climate action. In line with this, a portion of revenue from sales of the Samsung Global Goals edition of the Galaxy S20+ case made with Kvadrat textiles will be donated to UNDP in support of the 17 Global Goals1.

Samsung Global Goals edition Galaxy S20+ case made with Kvadrat textiles product images

As well as purchasing the Samsung Global Goals edition case, Galaxy users can also download the Samsung Global Goals app in order to discover more ways to get involved with the Samsung Global Goals initiative. With the app, users can learn more about each of the Global Goals and the issues they seek to tackle with detailed information, facts and figures on each Goal available. The app also helps raise money for the Global Goals, firstly by allowing users to donate directly to the Global Goals on the UNDP website and secondly by collecting ad revenue for the UNDP whenever users interact with ads on the app.

Galaxy Watch Active2 strap made with Kvadrat textiles product images

In addition to producing a line of cases for the Galaxy S20+, Samsung will also be releasing straps for the Galaxy Watch Active2 made out of Kvadrat textiles and other sustainable materials for those eco-minded Watch users.

Samsung is looking to not only promote sustainable product cycles but also to provide users with more options than ever when looking to make eco-friendly choices for the future.

1 The Samsung Global Goals edition of the Galaxy S20+ phone case made with Kvadrat textiles will be available in select markets only.

Last summer, Samsung Electronics announced its partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support the Sustainable Development Goals, also known as the Global Goals. Developed in 2015, the 17 Global Goals were set by the United Nations General Assembly and agreed upon by world leaders to help tackle some of the globe’s most pressing challenges.

In order to provide simple ways for Galaxy users to come together to support the Global Goals, Samsung and the UNDP launched an education and donation-based app, Samsung Global Goals. The app provides Galaxy users with the ability to learn more about the Global Goals and take part in small actions to help address the issues that matter most to them.

To provide the best user experience possible, along with more ways to get involved, Samsung is bringing a range of updates to the Samsung Global Goals app this January.

More Ways to Join in and Give Back

The Samsung Global Goals app offers a range of ways for users to support and give back to the Global Goals. By engaging with advertisements in the app, users are able to donate 100% of an ad’s revenue to the Global Goals. Samsung also recently announced that it will match all proceeds generated through the in-app advertisements to help maximize donations and make an impact, meaning that effectively 200% of ad revenue from the app will be donated to the UNDP by Samsung1.

The app also allows users to donate directly in support of the Global Goals to the UNDP. With the latest app updates, users will be able to use both Samsung Pay and Google Pay2 native payment mechanisms when donating. This will allow users to directly donate to the UNDP and the Goal of their choice by simply clicking and then confirming using biometric authentication – making it easier than ever to make a difference and donation to the #Global Goals campaign.

Samsung is also making it easier for users to opt into features that help generate more ad earnings, even when their phone is charging. Users can currently opt into the ‘Charge Screen ads’ feature in the Donate tab of the app, which will show ads on the device’s lock screen when it is plugged in to charge. As part of the update, the app will now prompt new users with a pop-up message providing information on this feature once their device has been plugged in to charge. This feature can be easily toggled off and on anytime in the Donate tab.

Additionally, users will be able to enjoy a wider range of lock screen options in the app’s Global Goals Lockscreen Wallpapers section, which can easily be managed in the app’s Settings page. The new wallpapers now support a wider selection of inspirational quotes, dynamic visuals, and graphic styles, making easier to stay engaged and inspired to contribute.

The update also brings several other UX upgrades to the Samsung Global Goals app. App notification messages have been streamlined for improved usability, each Goals’ Facts and Figures information is now more clearly linked to each Goal and users can more easily see which version of the app they are running. Galaxy users in Korea will also now be able to learn about the K-SDGs, or Korean Sustainable Development Goals, in the Samsung Global Goals app thanks to a collaboration with Korea’s Ministry of Environment.

The Samsung Global Goals app is available for download through the Galaxy Store and Google Play. To learn more about the Samsung Global Goals, visit here.

1 Samsung has pledged to match donations with ad proceeds generated through the Global Goals app; up to US$5 million annually.

2 Donations through Samsung Pay or Google Pay will be available in 5 markets following the current update, including the U.S., Singapore, Australia, the U.K., and Canada. This feature will be available in more regions in the future.

Through this new initiative, Samsung and UNDP will release the ‘Samsung Global Goals’ application, an education and donation-based mobile application, along with special edition accessories1.

“Now more than ever, we have the potential to use the power of technology to address the world’s most pressing challenges,” said DJ Koh, President and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics. “Our partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will provide Galaxy users with easy, impactful ways to learn about the Global Goals and support the causes important to them so we can collectively make a difference.”

Samsung and UNDP believe that a crucial step in tackling the Global Goals is to increase awareness and understanding of the challenges these goals address and why they are important. As an additional step, Samsung and UNDP are providing simple ways that people can donate to help address the challenges and fuel the actions needed to accomplish the Global Goals.

“This partnership with UNDP and Samsung will not only harness technological innovation in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, but will mobilize the next generation of global citizens to take action and achieve the goals together,” says Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator. “Only with a joint effort by everyone – private sector, civil society, and people across the world – can we truly have impact and change the world for the better.”

The ‘Samsung Global Goals’ application, available on Samsung Galaxy smartphones2, aims to increase awareness and raise funds for UNDP to support its work around the world. In addition, Samsung is launching special edition accessories, donating a portion of revenue from sales of each accessory directly to UNDP in support of the Global Goals. The Galaxy Note10 cover with Global Goals-themed design and a wireless charger will be introduced at the device launch.

The new ‘Samsung Global Goals’ app will give consumers easy and effective ways to learn more about each of the 17 Global Goals and take part in small actions to help support the issues that matter most to them. People can use the application to donate directly to the Global Goals via the UNDP website. Galaxy users can also easily donate to the Global Goals by choosing to engage with advertisements in the application. Galaxy users will be able to donate 100 percent of the advertisement revenue Samsung would have generated to the Global Goals.

The application will be available in 19 languages3 and will come preinstalled on the Galaxy Note10, while it will be available for download on other Galaxy smartphones2 later. The special edition accessories will be available through Samsung.com and select Samsung Experience Stores in the U.S. and Korea.

Over the last decade, Samsung has made a huge impact on smartphone technology, pioneering new innovations and revolutionizing the ways we communicate with each other. During the last 10 years of excellence in mobile technology leadership, Samsung has also taken on the responsibility of improving the world through our actions, particularly in the regions in which we operate.

But now more than ever, the world needs radical change as the societal challenges we face every day have become more urgent and complex. Embracing a spirit of open collaboration, Samsung is answering the call for action by creating a community that believes in working together to achieve a greater good.

Understanding that each region has different needs and priorities, and that there is no one-size-fits-all solution, Samsung saw the need to support a diverse range of goals and partnered with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to tackle 17 Global Goals.

Also referred to as Sustainable Development Goals, the Global Goals were developed by world leaders in 2015 with an eye on making the world a better place by 2030. The Global Goals include those related to inequality, climate and environmental degradation, education, and other ambitious milestones that aim for societal good. With the goals in place, it is up to governments, businesses, and society to work together to create a better future for everyone across the globe. At Samsung, we believe it’s important to step up and use our power as one of the world’s leading technology companies to make change.

It’s a natural evolution for Samsung’s CSR initiatives, as we embrace a spirit of open collaboration. There is an opportunity to work together to address the societal challenges we face every day and make a difference on the issues that matter in our local communities. But it takes more than one company to solve those complex modern problems. That’s why we are expanding our partnership with UNDP to support the Global Goals.

With the Global Goals as a foundation, Samsung is encouraging Galaxy users to make an impact by taking small individual actions that add up to meaningful collective change and achieve greater societal good. To help Galaxy users, Samsung is launching special edition accessories and the Samsung Global Goals application, which offers simple ways to help raise awareness about the Global Goals and enable people to take small actions to create change through direct donations or something as simple as engaging an ad.

Through small individual actions, together we can create exponential good. Check out the infographic below to learn more about the Samsung Global Goals campaign.

“Women can and need to be independent,” said Kyunghwa Yu (Senior Professional, Samsung Global Strategy Group), an employee volunteer. “Sharing examples of women who decided to dream and made those dreams come true, I wanted to let the Nepalese girls know that they could do it, too.”

A volunteer shows students how to effectively capture images using a digital camera

While equal rights continue to be widely discussed, gender equality hasn’t necessarily been the norm in many parts of the world. According to the United Nations Development Programme(UNDP)’s 2015 gender inequality index(GII: higher the score, more severe the inequality), the average of South Asian countries (0.520) are behind the world (0.443) in terms of gender equality. Nepal is also part of the struggle – especially as it’s still recovering from the massive earthquakes that hit the mountainous country.

To help address this challenge, 25 Samsung Electronics employee volunteers travelled to Nepal last September to run the Designer’s School for Women Entrepreneurship*, a one-week course that focused on empowering girls and young women with skills in design and technology.

The Designer’s School for Women Entrepreneurship taught basics in business & marketing, writing resumes, interview skills and also held workshops for image-taking, editing and graphic design.

The teachers were at first worried that the students might have a hard time keeping up with the classes. But they were soon overwhelmed by the passion of the students – they would give up their breaks to ask questions and one girl, based on what she’d learned, even handed in her resume to a local designer.

Jihae Lim (Senior Designer, Future Experience Design Group, Visual Display Business) emphasized that it is important to empower people. “While many Nepalese women knit, it wasn’t until someone started selling it and invited more people to take part before it bloomed into a business,” she says. “We need to tap into the talents already in place and work to develop them into marketable practices. In enabling them to be independent, we take a step closer to sustainable development.”

Kusum, a local student, said that her eyes were opened to futures she previously hadn’t even dreamed of. And inspired by these new possibilities, she shared her passion with fellow young women in her area in the form of a poem.
