Whether you’re making searches or responding to messages and emails, you can take advantage of the new full QWERTY keyboard with Swipe to type in addition to dictating and handwriting, making communicating from your watch easier than ever.² Plus, instead of committing to just one method, One UI Watch4.5 lets you seamlessly switch inputs at any time, allowing you to start dictating a message then change to the keyboard if you need more privacy.

Making calls is also more frictionless on the Galaxy Watch thanks to dual-SIM support on One UI Watch4.5.³ Users can set a preferred SIM on their Galaxy smartphone and have it automatically synced on their Galaxy Watch. An easy-to-read interface always shows you which SIM is being used on the Watch. If the SIM setting is set to “Ask always” on the phone, users can choose which SIM they’d like to use from their Galaxy Watch. Want to make calls without giving away your personal number? It’s your call to make — SIM1 or SIM2.

In addition to being an always-with-you communication tool, the Galaxy Watch offers more watch face customizability so it better compliments whatever you’re wearing. Enjoy your favorite watch face in various styles by adding the watch face to your favorite list multiple times and customizing each instance with different colors and complications.⁴ What’s more, on the favorite list, the watch faces you select are saved for quick access, so you don’t have to cycle through your entire collection.

Making Galaxy Watch More Accessible

The One UI Watch4.5 update also includes handy accessibility features enabling users to enjoy the full Galaxy Watch experience.

Users who have a difficult time distinguishing colors will be able to adjust the display to their preferred hue and increase contrast to make fonts easier to read. Other features for visual assistance include reduced transparency and blur effects as well as the removal of animations. In addition, auditory assistance for those who are hard of hearing allows users to balance the sound from the left and right audio output of their connected Bluetooth headset.⁵

Those who need added support for touch inputs can extend the duration for screen tap interaction with Tap duration and can disable repeated touch inputs with Ignore repeated touches for better control.

For added support, users can adjust how long temporary functions, such as volume and notifications, stay on screen with Time to take action and can set the home button to toggle the most commonly used feature. All accessibility options can be accessed from one convenient menu, so you don’t have to dig through the settings to find them.

Enhanced with Convenient Gear S3 Features

For a start, the Gear S2’s update provides users with more opportunities to personalize their smartwatch and add to its convenience.

For instance, Gear S2 users will now be able to further customize their device by downloading, via the Galaxy Apps store, the Gear S3’s preloaded watch faces. Other useful downloads include the Reminders app, which lets Gear S2 users add tasks and conveniently manage to-do lists, and the Alti-Barometer, which can assist in tracking outdoor activities and measuring air pressure.

The Gear S2’s update also enhances the function of its intuitive bezel, which allows users to accept or reject calls, and dismiss alarms, timers and alerts for scheduled events with a twist.* A clockwise turn will answer or acknowledge an alert, while a counterclockwise turn will reject a call or postpone an alarm.

Messages with a Personal Touch

The Gear S2’s Messages app has also offered users more ways to connect and express themselves.

The new Handwriting Mode features support for superimposed writing, allowing users to scrawl messages directly onto the device in Korean, English or Chinese, and without waiting for each individual letter to be converted into text. Users may also punctuate their messages with sketches, or choose an appropriate visual from the Gear S2’s emoji catalog, which has been expanded to feature 180 distinct emojis. For those who prefer a hands-free approach to messaging, the new voice-input option lets you send dictated texts and voice recordings.

Speaking of voice input, the Gear S2’s S Voice functionality has also received a tune-up. Now, once a user activates the function and begins to speak, the device will process the command in real time. This reduces unnecessary feedback screens and provides users with faster access to the information they need.

Advanced Activity Tracking with S Health

To encourage users to be physically active in smarter ways, S Health has been enhanced to automatically recognize more activities, including running, walking, cycling, elliptical- and rowing-machine sessions as well as “Other Workouts” such as high-intensity activities.

The device is also capable of automatically counting reps for gym-standard exercises such as squats, lunges, crunches and star jumps. In addition, should a user need to stop for any reason while running, walking or cycling, the new Auto Pause feature will automatically suspend fitness-tracking functions and resume as soon as the user is ready.

The new Pace Coaching function, meanwhile, helps users maximize their cardio by allowing them to set an optimal pace for a run or jog and providing a voice guide to coach them through achieving it. Moreover, with the new Stretching Guide incorporated into its Inactive Time Alert, if a user has been inactive for an extended period of time, the Gear S2 will suggest and walk them through a series of invigorating stretches, using its sensors to detect movements and tally reps.

Wider Widget Support

The Gear S2’s update also incorporates support for third-party widgets from popular apps like Uber, Yelp and USA Today, and streamlines others.

The handy Multi-Contact widget, for example, now allows users to select up to four contacts for quick access. The improved Weather widget now boasts a City Navigator function to allow users to monitor multiple cities’ conditions, and also provides the UV index, rainfall probability and more detailed insight into daily forecasts. Other notable additions include S Health’s fitness-focused Leaderboard and Challenge widgets.

Streamlined Safety Features

With the safety and security features’ new location-tracking support, when a user initiates an SOS alert by pressing the device’s home button three times, those designated to automatically receive it will then be able to pinpoint, via the location-sharing app Glympse, the exact location of the user’s Gear S2. This action may also be used to trigger the device’s Safety Partner function, which immediately connects users who have signed up for the service with representatives from partnering security firms.*

An Ever-Expanding Gaming Library

Lastly, just for fun, the Gear S2’s update offers users access to the Galaxy Apps store’s diverse ecosystem of entertaining and interactive games, including Stack and Monster Vampire. With simple, tap-and-twist controls and a store that currently features over 100 titles, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

This vulnerability, as noted by the researchers, requires a very specific set of conditions for a hacker to be able to exploit a device this way. This includes the user and the hacker physically being on the same unprotected network while downloading a language update. Also, on a KNOX-protected device there are additional capabilities in place such as real-time kernel protection to prevent a malicious attack from being effective.

So the likelihood of making a successful attack, exploiting this vulnerability is low. There have been no reported customer cases of Galaxy devices being compromised through these keyboard updates.* But as the reports indicate, the risk does exist and Samsung will roll out a security policy update in the coming days.

In addition to the security policy update, we will continue to work with related parties such as SwiftKey to address potential risks going forward.

All flagship models since Galaxy S4 have the KNOX security platform installed and have the KNOX platform protection enabled when you turn the device on.  One of these protections is Security Enhancements (SE) for Android which enforces a number of mandatory security settings on the device.

Samsung KNOX has the capability to update the security policies of our devices, over-the-air, to invalidate potential vulnerabilities caused by this issue. The security policy updates will begin rolling out in a few days.

Make sure your device automatically receives security policy updates

The security policy update will be pushed to the user. The user must agree to receive the security policy update. To ensure your device receives the latest security updates, go to Settings > Lock Screen and Security > Other Security Settings > Security policy updates, and make sure the Automatic Updates option is activated. At the same screen, the user may also click Check for updates to manually retrieve any new security policy updates. **

For the devices that don’t come with KNOX by default, we are currently working on an expedited firmware update that will be available upon completion of all testing and approvals. ***

Samsung Camera NX1 Firmware Update

Premium Compact System Camera’s performance boosted with a range of upgraded features

Samsung Electronics announced a firmware update for the Samsung NX1, its premium compact system camera. The new firmware enhances and refines the Samsung NX1’s capabilities, allowing it to operate with even greater precision and speed. Key enhancements focus on movie functions and controls, the user interface and wireless capabilities.

Both budding and experienced film makers will enjoy the variety of Movie mode refinements, which deliver an even more professional filming experience. Not only can users now adjust audio levels while recording video, they can also control ISO and choose from two Gamma modes with Master Black Level Control and three luminance levels, enabling greater control over the look of footage. AF controls in movie mode have also been enhanced, allowing users to select from three AF speeds. A new feature for controlling continuous AF behavior also helps track focus on a moving subject while shooting.

The Samsung NX1’s interface is also upgraded, making it easier than ever to navigate through the range of features. Users can now set the AEL button to lock focus, and use manual focus in AF mode during recording. The customizable UI refinements provide a host of benefits, including reversing the functions of the Mobile and Record buttons, reversing the functions of the AF On and the AEL buttons, and reversing the direction of the Command dials based on preference.

The range of connectivity options available on the Samsung NX1 has received a boost, and users can now activate Bluetooth as a simple remote trigger. Speeding up and simplifying the process for using a smart device as a remote control, this new feature can trigger the shutter release as well as stop and start video via Bluetooth rather than Wi-Fi. The Samsung NX1 can now also store multiple paired smart devices with no need to re-register when moving between different devices, allowing greater consistency and convenience.

Other updates include Trap Shot, an addition to the popular Samsung Auto Shot mode. Users can now adjust the settings so that when a moving object hits this line, the camera will automatically take a picture. PC tethering via USB is now a reality for those using Samsung Remote Studio software and developers can take advantage of Samsung’s Software Development Kit for Windows PC, meaning they have remote access and control software for the Samsung NX1.
