At the heart of its innovative design, the Galaxy Z Flip is built to help you do more with less. The compact yet stylish device is packed with features and experiences that will make your everyday routine easier and simpler.

Here are seven useful tips of the Galaxy Z Flip.

Simple Ways to Receive Calls

Your smartphone can ring any time of the day, so why should there only be one way to take a phone call?

With multiple options to receive a call, the Galaxy Z Flip lets you take phone calls comfortably without stopping the task at hand. If the phone rings while you are cooking or multitasking with your hands, simply swipe from left to right on the cover display to receive the call on speaker mode. To end the call, all you need to do is swipe the opposite way on the cover display.

Another way to answer a phone call on the Galaxy Z Flip is by unfolding the device and swiping left to right. This is great for times when you need to take a call together with multiple colleagues in the same room.

If you prefer answering and ending phone calls automatically by folding and unfolding the device, you can change the phone app’s Settings to suit your needs.

Instantly Capture Multiple Photos

Let’s say you are at a birthday party and you want to capture the birthday cake moment. With so many people singing and moving all around you, it’s hard to take the perfect shot with just one photo.

The Galaxy Z Flip’s camera comes with Burst mode, which lets you take a series of photos in the blink of an eye. Simply hold and drag down the shutter button in the Camera app and shoot as the action unfolds. You can then go to the Gallery and pick the perfect shot in your own time.

Turning memorable experiences into instantly shareable GIFs on the Galaxy Z Flip is as easy as taking a photo. In the Camera app’s Settings, you can change the action of swiping down the shutter button to create GIFs.

Use the Cover Display as a Selfie Viewfinder

Spontaneity is one of the ingredients that many great selfies share. With the Galaxy Z Flip, you can be sure to capture amazing individual or group selfies whenever the mood strikes.

When your device is folded, you can simply double tap the fingerprint sensor to turn the cover display into a selfie viewfinder. You can then switch between the wide-angle and Ultra Wide lens by tapping on the display. Once everything is perfectly framed, all you need to do is click the volume button to take the shot.

Launch Multi Window Mode Quickly

Whether you want to quickly pull up a to-do list while running errands or reply to a message while watching a video, the Galaxy Z Flip makes multitasking in daily life simpler.

You can run apps in Multi Window mode on the device by opening them from the Multi-Window Tray, which can be accessed by swiping the right side of the display.

Opening up a pop-up window on the Galaxy Z Flip can give you more flexibility when you multitask. Simply press and drag an icon from the Multi-Window Tray to the center of the display to launch an app as a pop-up window.

Do Everything With One Hand

We’ve all had times when we have struggled to deal with multiple tasks on our phones with just one hand. The Galaxy Z Flip comes with a nifty feature that lets you comfortably reach everything on the main display when only one of your hands is free. By double tapping on the home button or swiping down in the center of the bottom edge, One-handed mode temporarily scales down the display size for easier control.

If you want to open the notification panel at the top of the main display without reaching up every time, you can enable gestures on the fingerprint sensor located on the side of the Galaxy Z Flip for easier access. You can also adjust settings so that swiping down from any location on the main display will open the notification panel.

Switch on Focus Mode to Minimize Distractions

There are times when we all just need to accomplish the task at hand without any distractions. With the Galaxy Z Flip, you can create some peace and quiet and get in the zone with Focus Mode. The feature allows you to temporarily mute notifications from a customized list of apps and even cut down on distractions by disabling apps that you might be tempted to use for times when you truly need to focus.

Charge Your Devices Wirelessly With PowerShare

There’s nothing more frustrating than your earphones running out of battery during a long commute. With Wireless PowerShare on the Galaxy Z Flip, you don’t need to wait until you find a plug to charge up your wearables. Simply switch on the feature and the smartphone can act as a wireless charging pad for all your other devices.

Ever since the introduction of barely luggable laptops in the early 1980s, people have been bringing their PCs with them to work, learn, and create wherever they go. Computing power may have evolved since then, but the desire to get more done no matter where we are hasn’t changed. Technology has erased the boundaries of where we work, allowing us to get more done at the office, café, or on the couch at home.

That is why we have a new vision for computing. We are focused on creating a world that will bring consumers a connected experience for the utmost convenience – whether you’re a student that uses multiple devices to study, or a business professional that always needs to be connected to your team. To bring that vision to life, we’re extending the Galaxy experience beyond the smartphone and developing new Galaxy Book laptops that tie into the Galaxy ecosystem for a seamless experience.

Now more than ever, people want devices that are flexible enough to meet multiple needs, integrate seamlessly with their connected ecosystems, and keep them connected at all times. Increasingly, consumers are searching for light and portable devices that provide mobility, connectivity, and the advantages of a PC and tablet in one device. We took those demands to heart by kickstarting an era of the Galaxy Book series. This new range of laptops enables people to do their best work, be creative, and change the world from wherever they like.

First introduced at the Samsung Developer Conference 2019, the Galaxy Book series combines the versatility of a Note PC with the mobility of a smartphone. It represents a step forward in personal computing, as the perception of PCs has changed from ‘family’ to ‘personal’ devices. As a result, consumers’ needs have become more diverse and personalized. Samsung has embraced this trend and introduced a range of diverse computing devices that deliver productivity, connectivity, mobility, and continuity with other digital devices to meet the demands of each individual consumer.

With the launch of the powerful Galaxy Book series, which includes the Galaxy Book S, Galaxy Book Flex, and Galaxy Book Ion, we are ushering in a new era of mobile computing. The Galaxy Book series are now available in North America, Asia, and some countries of Europe1. As the demand for these innovative devices continues to grow, we will do our best to increase the availability of the Galaxy Book series for more happy customers across the world.

I believe that these devices are the next great step in personal computing as they harness the mobility and connectivity of a smartphone, the powerful productivity of a PC, and the continuity to experience a seamless Galaxy ecosystem. Here’s a closer look at our latest Galaxy Book series.

Connectivity on the Go

We’ve all been there – you’re out of the office and need to access your company server to retrieve important project files. The ability to connect wherever you are is a cornerstone of the next generation of computing as both students and business professionals increasingly find themselves out of the classrooms and offices and in more dynamic working environments, or even on the couch at home. Thanks to built-in LTE on the Galaxy Book S, you can always access those important files and communicate with friends, family, and colleagues from wherever you want. The Galaxy Book S also comes equipped with Wi-Fi 62, allowing you to connect to high-speed internet even in crowded public spaces where many people are connected to the network. But a device that can connect from anywhere also needs to be easy to carry.

Built for Mobility

Whether you often find yourself flitting from one meeting to the next, or just need a device that can be there for you when inspiration strikes, the Galaxy Book line-up is built for mobility. Constructed with magnesium to reduce its weight, the 13.3” Galaxy Book Ion weighs only 0.97kg and is just 12.9mm thick. Thanks to this lightweight design, it fits comfortably in your hands so you can move effortlessly from your office to your couch, and everywhere in between.

Offering an impressive battery life when fully charged, it can keep up with you all day, from your morning meeting to that last-minute email on the commute home3. Best of all, built-in Wireless PowerShare turns your touchpad into a charging station, ensuring you never run out of battery for your Galaxy smartphone or Galaxy Buds.

But the Galaxy Book line-up is about more than just longer battery life – it’s about bringing powerful features together into a seamless ecosystem so you can accomplish your goals.

Productivity to Power Your Day

As our workplaces have become more dynamic, and the boundaries that define them more flexible, laptops have evolved to keep pace with the rapidly changing environment. The Galaxy Book Flex is designed with those challenges in mind.

Equipped with an S Pen, a consumer-favorite feature, and a 2-in-1 convertible design, the Galaxy Book Flex brings all-new experiences to laptops. Empowering students to learn more efficiently, Voice Note allows you to record lectures while jotting down important notes and diagrams to help you remember them later. When playing back recordings, the software shows a list of all your bookmarked memos and automatically displays them while you listen. That unmatched productivity is bolstered by a powerful connected ecosystem that allows you to easily sync important information across your devices.

Seamless Continuity

The Galaxy Book line-up offers seamless mobile-to-PC connectivity right at your fingertips. Microsoft Your Phone comes pre-installed and allows you to connect your Galaxy smartphone to your Galaxy Book so you can quickly transfer data, drag-and-drop files, and check and respond to SMS messages. Your Phone also allows screen mirroring, so you can see your phone’s screen and control apps right on your laptop. Best of all, it doesn’t need a physical connection – all that’s required is a Wi-Fi connection.

From advanced connectivity to unique form factors with cutting-edge features, our latest line-up of Galaxy laptops is truly ushering in a new era of computing.

From offices to cafés, and airport lounges to libraries, people can be seen using laptops to work, study and watch videos from wherever they are. To enable this kind of usability, laptops must be underpinned with reliable, high performance power options, meaning that battery lifetimes and charging speeds have had to evolve to keep up with demand.

(From left) Engineers Sunghoon Kim and Jehwan Lee, who developed the battery for the Galaxy Book series, and product planner Hyemi Sung

In an environment in which laptops must continually overcome their limitations to meet new sets of needs, the Galaxy Book S, Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion are delivering high-level battery performance to ensure that they are able to meet users’ needs. The batteries in the Galaxy Book series feature best-in-class specifications that improve the usability and portability of the laptops and allow them to charge faster and be used for longer.

Newsroom sat down with the developers responsible for Samsung’s battery research to hear how they went about producing a lightweight laptop that features long enough battery power.

The Slim-Down Secret – High-Density Energy Packed Into a Battery

A battery’s capacity is generally proportional to its physical size – the bigger the battery, the longer you can use the laptop. However, as laptops must offer maximized portability, their batteries cannot be allowed to become overlarge or cumbersome. Thus, the developers at Samsung came up with a solution called ‘high energy density cells’, which allow the largest possible amount of energy to be stored in a limited space. Whereas the energy efficiency of conventional batteries sits at around 650Wh/L, the new battery cells in the Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion boast energy efficiency of around 700Wh/L.

Commenting on the development of the specialized battery packs, engineer Sunghoon Kim said, “We undertook several tests to find the perfect balance between weight, size and battery efficiency. With the new batteries, users can use the Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion for up to 20 hours and 22 hours, respectively.”1

Another important factor in battery efficiency is charging speed, which becomes especially important when users are about to go out and find themselves low on battery. To prevent users from being inconvenienced in this way, the developers designed a quick charging algorithm and a large-capacity 65W adaptor that allows the usual charging time of 120 minutes for a 100% charge to be shortened to 90 minutes.

For charging versatility, the ‘easy charging’ feature also allows users to use a smartphone charger and supplementary battery when they need a charge urgently. Engineer Jehwan Lee said “With smartphone chargers being unified with USB-C® functionality across the board, we were able to implement easy charging in the Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion. We tested the easy charging function with a wide range of different supplementary batteries, and ensured that it would facilitate quick and convenient charging when users need it.”

Get More Out of Your Laptop With Long-life Algorithm

According to a Samsung internal customer trend survey, users expect their laptops to have an average lifetime of around four years. As a laptop’s battery is a consumable component that gets worn down quickly, extending battery life is key to increasing the overall lifetime of the laptop.

Samsung’s long-life algorithm has contributed to after-use battery capacities being effectively doubled, with the batteries in the Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion now able to retain roughly 80% of their original capacity after charging and discharging 1,000 times. Engineer Jehwan Lee, who was responsible for designing the batteries’ power circuits, explained that “When a battery is aging, it sustains added stress and deterioration even if the tasks it is performing remain unchanged. By monitoring the battery’s status and making adjustments to the charging voltage and current flow when the number of charging cycles is increased, the long-life algorithm contributes to delaying battery deterioration.”

Lee also explained that, “Your laptop’s battery may wear down faster if you keep it constantly connected to the charger. If you keep your laptop plugged in all the time, we recommend activating the ‘Battery Life Extender +’ feature, which prevents the battery from being charged above 85% of its capacity.”

Realizing Wireless PowerShare in a Laptop

A unique feature of Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion is that they include the Wireless PowerShare feature. Smartphones, wearable devices, wireless earphones and other Qi-compatible devices can all be charged wirelessly when they are placed on the laptop’s touchpad, removing the need for users to carry multiple chargers with them. Hyemi Sung, who was responsible for product planning for the Galaxy Book series, said, “As this is the first laptop series to feature ‘Galaxy’ in its name, we wanted to incorporate a function that would prove useful for users who use multiple Galaxy devices in their day-to-day lives.”

However, incorporating such a feature did not prove straightforward for the developers. Beneath their touchpads, laptops feature a mesh-structured circuit board that detects touch motions, and this aspect of the hardware design obstructed the developers’ ability to incorporate wireless charging into the laptops. Engineer Jehwan Lee explained, “We needed to expand the fine mesh structure in order to improve the efficiency of the wireless charging feature, but doing so decreased the touch accuracy of the touchpad. Following extensive testing done in partnership with the touchpad division, we were eventually able to achieve a balance that maintains functionality in both areas simultaneously.”

Producing a Safer Battery

Adding convenience often causes other problems to arise, and chief among them in the case of the Galaxy Book series was that of heat. A battery that receives larger quantities of power more quickly will naturally heat up faster, thus requiring the Galaxy Book developers to come up with measures to prevent overheating.

The battery sits beneath the touchpad, which includes the wireless battery sharing feature. The developers innovated to prevent overheating while battery sharing is activated

The batteries in the newly released Galaxy Book laptops consist of four cells, all of which are installed with double and triple protection to prevent the spread of heat. Engineer Jehwan Lee explained that, “A temperature sensor located near the charging circuit monitors heat levels, while the system further prevents overheating by alternating between quick charging when the power is off and normal charging when the power is on.”

Engineer Sunghoon Kim explained that “Safety is the most important factor when it comes to developing batteries. All the batteries developed by the Mobile Division undergo an 8-point safety check2 and are designed to remain safe in a wide range of thermal stress environments.”

The battery is an enormously important component when it comes to portable electronic devices. Speaking to this, engineer Jehwan Lee remarked that, “As people expect to be able to use their electronic devices for extended periods of time these days, we’re giving our brand an edge by providing devices with extended battery life.”

Finally, engineer Sunghoon Kim shed some light on the team’s plans for the future, saying that, “Whereas the performance of many contemporary laptop batteries will start to decline after around 1,000 charges, we’d like to develop a battery that maintains performance after 3,000 charges.”

Samsung Electronics today introduced Galaxy Watch Active2, the newest addition to the Galaxy smartwatch portfolio. As part of the Galaxy family, Galaxy Watch Active2 is purposefully designed with new, intuitive, and refined features to bring more customization to consumers’ personal lifestyles, enhance their health and wellness as well as enable seamless, connected living.

The Galaxy Watch Active2 lets users live better through small, yet meaningful, daily changes—from reaching wellness goals such as sleep, fitness, and stress management to completing tasks efficiently. Whether you want to take time to meditate, be notified of every update, or fall somewhere in between, Galaxy Watch Active2 complements your lifestyle and delivers on what makes a difference—all while looking sleek and stylish in the process.

“The smartwatch market is rapidly growing, and we at Samsung are excited to continually expand our presence in new and visionary ways,” said DJ Koh, President and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics. “With Galaxy Watch Active2, we have created a device that will enable consumers to take control of their health and wellness, and seamlessly flow between their devices and connect across the Samsung Galaxy ecosystem, making their lives easier and better.”

Purposeful Design, Customized to Your Life

The Galaxy Watch Active2 is masterfully designed to be both beautiful and customizable to your life. The Galaxy Watch Active2 comes in two different sizes—44mm and 40mm in diameter—and two styles: lightweight aluminum with a casual Fluoroelastomer (FKM) Band, and premium solid stainless steel with a leather strap. The smartwatches can be personalized with a range of additional stylish strap and watch-face options.

The Galaxy Watch Active2 features a brand new upgrade to our signature rotating bezel—and turns it digital to make it even more convenient to navigate while maximizing the screen size. Now directly on the beautifully curved Super AMOLED screen, the rotating touch bezel turns both clockwise and counter-clockwise to advance screens so you can easily select favorite apps. Plus, the upgraded One UI offers a simple, clear and natural user experience for navigation.

And for those users who want a watch as stylish as they are, you can now customize your Galaxy Watch Active2 face to your outfit with the My Style1 color extraction algorithm. Available in the Galaxy Wearable app, simply take a photo of your outfit, choose from five different color patterns, and your watch face changes in seconds. You can match your personal style each and every day—or save a favorite style for later.

The Perfect Companion for Your Wellness Goals

The Galaxy Watch Active2 also serves as your guide to improved health and wellness, providing actionable insights that can help you make positive lifestyle choices in your diet, exercise, mental health, sleep and more.

With exercise, for example, the smartwatch can manually track more than 39 workouts with seven of them automatically activated—including running, walking, cycling, swimming, rowing machine, elliptical machine and dynamic workouts. With an updated Running Coach, you can monitor your running pace in real-time and enjoy seven different running programs to help meet your goals. The Galaxy Watch Active2 even incorporates innovative new health sensors on the back, which take in readings faster, so you know you’re getting insights quickly to maximize your fitness routine and stay on track.

The Galaxy Watch Active2 also helps you track real-time stress levels through Samsung Health, our signature and popular health and wellness app2. It also provides access to guided meditation programs through an integration with the leading sleep and meditation app, Calm, now available in English, German and Spanish. And enhanced sleep analysis algorithms help you work toward healthy sleep patterns (through the four sleep stages), aiding recovery at night and getting you ready for the next day.

Seamlessly Expand Your Connected Lifestyle, Better with Galaxy Family

The Galaxy Watch Active2 makes it easy to stay connected to your life, and your other devices, even while you’re away or on-the-go. The Galaxy Watch Active2 with LTE connectivity allows you to make and receive calls freely from the watch, while apps like social media viewers are accessible with just a tap of the finger, and offer more interaction with your content. Now you can like a social post, and even watch a short video clip right from your wrist. You can even travel across the globe with greater confidence, as Galaxy Watch Active2 now supports convenient real-time voice and text translation in over 16 languages.3

Another way we’re making it even easier to stay connected is through our partnership with Spotify4. Sign into your Samsung account with single sign-on from your phone or Galaxy Watch Active2, and easily browse through your music, podcasts on Spotify and enjoy a continuous listening experience. The Galaxy Watch Active2 brings you seamless device interaction experiences, and makes access to music, podcasts and multimedia access even easier.

Integral Part of the Galaxy Ecosystem

As part of the Galaxy family, the Galaxy Watch Active2 brings the best of Samsung’s Galaxy ecosystem to the smartwatch for those who want to do it all. When the Galaxy Watch Active2 is paired to your Galaxy smartphone,, for example, the Watch Camera Controller5 on the Galaxy Watch Active2 allows you to take photos, start recording a video, preview footage on the watch, switch between front and rear lenses, set a timer and then check the final photo or video — all from your wrist. You can also use Wireless PowerShare on your Galaxy smartphone to charge your smartwatch in an easy and intuitive way.

Plus, all the Samsung services you get with Galaxy ecosystem—like Samsung Health, SmartThings, Samsung Pay,6 and more—are seamlessly integrated with your watch and across your devices. You can use, for example, Bixby to navigate your watch, start a workout or check the weather. And of course, everything you do on your watch is protected by Knox technology.

Summertime has come. A lot of people are interested in exercise, fitness, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle during this time of the season. Samsung Newsroom has decided to spend 24 hours with the Galaxy Watch Active to see if it is the perfect companion that will help me get the summer body.

Once I wore the watch, I immediately noticed the look and feel of the slim fit. Given its various activity-tracking features that include sleep tracking and stress detection, consumers could easily assume that the watch would appear to be bulkier in person. But the small and light 28mm display weighs only 25g that consumers with thin wrists and women can wear it with ease. Also, the watch straps are sturdy and smooth that does not collect dust. The Galaxy Watch Active is designed to keep the remaining strap tucked against your wrist, making it extremely convenient to use.

7:30 AM – Starting the Day with Sleep Tracking Data

The first thing I did when I woke up was to check the sleep tracking data. Using the Samsung Health app, the Galaxy Watch Active provides a rundown of the stages of sleep1 through the night and sends personalized analysis related to my sleeping habits. Thanks to the sleep data, I realized that my sleeping habits were irregular. To build a healthier habit, I decided that I should try to go to bed at a certain time regularly to enhance my quality of sleep. And with the recent Software Update, it was easier for me to switch to ‘Goodnight Mode’ before I went to sleep. When it is time for me to go to bed based on my sleeping pattern, the device lets me know if I want to set the mode on. Once it is activated, it turns the sound and screen off so that I will not get distracted while I am asleep.

8:30 AM – Checking my Schedule Without Turning on the Phone

“Hi Bixby, show me today’s schedule.” When I was on my way to work, I asked Bixby to check my schedule for the day and the weather without taking the phone out of my bag. All of this is possible since my phone is synced with the Galaxy Watch Active. This was the most useful function especially when I was holding my bag or other larger personal belongings. Just by using the voice command, I was able to check my schedule, the weather, start recording my workout when I am exercising, and even control my home devices through SmartThings (an IoT app).

2:30 PM – How I can Charge My Watch Without a Battery Charger

During the afternoon, the Galaxy Active Watch sent a notification that the battery was running low. Though I can charge the watch with a battery charger, I don’t have to carry it with me all the time since I can simply use Wireless PowerShare on the Galaxy S10 to recharge. With Samsung’s device ecosystem that is seamlessly connected, it is very helpful.

4:00 PM – The Watch Vibrates When a Message Arrives

While I was concentrating on my work at the office, I felt a weak vibration on my wrist. I checked the watch and saw a text message from my friend asking me if I wanted to get some pizza this weekend. The great thing about the Galaxy Watch Active is that I don’t have to use my phone and unlock it to reply to a text since I can simply respond back using the watch. I can use my finger to draw an emoticon or use the keyboard and voice input to respond to long messages. Using these features, I texted back, “Love to .”

6:10 PM – Heading Home from Work, Taking the Stairs and Achieving my Workout Goals

A healthy habit starts with a single step. “Daily Activity” feature reminds me to move hourly, burn more calories and workout every day. When I am concentrating on my work at the office, I would not leave the desk for hours. However, when I receive notifications from the Galaxy Watch Active, I never forget to do some stretches every hour since the device detects my movement patterns. And though I usually tend to use the escalators when I am using the subway, I chose to take the stairs instead to reach my daily goals. The best feeling is when I get a notification telling me that I reached my daily goal.

8:00 PM – Exercising at Home Without the Help of a Personal Trainer

After a hard day at work, I still managed some time to exercise at home so that I can get that summer body. With the Galaxy Watch Active, the device can automatically detect and track seven types of exercise such as walking, running, riding a bike and swimming when I am working out for a certain amount of time. Not only that, I can check how much time I spent and how many calories I have burned by selecting an exercise routine from thirty-nine types of exercise from lunges to squats, yoga, etc. When I wanted to give up because it was getting too hard to exercise, I kept on going when I saw how close I was to meeting my goals from the watch. I was motivated to reach the targets and finished my daily workout. I have never felt so much accomplishment.

My 24 hours with the Galaxy Watch Active helped me to maintain healthier habits and increase activities. I could have easily given up if I were to go through the process all by myself. They say that pros do not make excuses on tools/devices, but it is also true that we rely on good tools to enhance our efficiency, including for workouts. The Galaxy Watch Active is the perfect partner for people who seek to live healthier lifestyles. Comfortable and easy-to-wear designs with useful apps, features like alarm services, and the newly launched straps are added bonuses.

1 Four stages including △Awake (including the moments when the user is awake or toss and turn) △REM △Light △Deep

Samsung Electronics’ new Wireless PowerShare technology allows you to use your Galaxy S10 to recharge compatible smartphones and wearables1 without the need for additional cables. It’s a simple and convenient way to keep your devices powered up when you’re on the go.

To learn more about the development process behind the new flagship line’s powerhouse battery, Samsung Newsroom sat down with developers who helped bring the battery to life – Hyeonsu Lee, Hongjung Son, Yusu Kim and Juhyang Lee – as well as Product Planner Jeongmin Moon.

(Clockwise from left) Yusu Kim, Hyeonsu Lee, Hongjung Son, Juhyang Lee, and Jeongmin Moon

Changing Charging for the Better

According to Product Planner Jeongmin Moon, the development team incorporated Wireless PowerShare technology into the Galaxy S10 line to offer users the freedom to go about their day without being tied down by cables and chargers.

“We wanted to solve the inconvenience of having to carry around multiple chargers and cables when you’re out and about, or having to interrupt your day to stop at places like cafes just to charge your phone,” said Moon. “So we came up with the idea to essentially make the Galaxy S10 a wireless charger in and of itself.”

Since the release of the Galaxy S6, the first Galaxy device to offer wireless charging, more and more smartphones and wearables have begun to feature the technology as well. This, Yusu Kim noted, is another reason why Samsung prioritized incorporating wireless battery-sharing technology into the Galaxy S10 line.

“Wireless PowerShare allows you to easily share your battery’s power anytime, anywhere,” said Kim. “And as more devices begin to support wireless charging, more people will be able to experience the convenience that the technology creates.”

The technology behind wireless battery sharing and wireless charging is quite similar. A wireless charger receives DC (direct current) charge and converts it to AC (alternating current) with the battery coil before transmitting it to the receiving smartphone. The phone will then convert the AC charge back to DC and save the energy in the battery. Each Galaxy S10 device features a circuit that enables this two-way conversion, which essentially allows the phones serve as wireless chargers as well.

As mentioned above, the list of Wireless PowerShare-compatible devices includes not only smartphones, but, in an industry first, wearables1 like Samsung’s Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Buds as well. As Juhyang Lee explained, the process of enabling the technology to work with such a wide range of devices was quite a difficult task.

“The sizes of these devices’ batteries are all different, so the most difficult part of the process was finding an optimal spot for the receiving coils that would result in maximum efficiency,” Lee explained. With the smartwatch, she recalled “the receiving coil was particularly small, so it took some time to find the most efficient approach. However, after months and months of extensive research, we produced a solution that meets our strict reliability standards.”

Of course, in order to share its charge with another device, your Galaxy S10’s battery must possess enough power to efficiently operate your phone. (At least 30 percent, to be precise.) To offer users more freedom to utilize this useful function, the Galaxy S10 line features AI technology that optimizes battery usage based on how you use your phone.

When building this technology, the developers focused particularly on the battery consumption of infrequently used apps. As Hongjung Son explained, “Out of all the apps that users have on their phones, only a small number are used every day. And the ones that aren’t used consume battery power in the background.”

“To limit these apps’ background activities,” he continued, “we incorporated AI technology that organizes apps into different categories, such as ‘frequently used,’ ‘occasionally used,’ and ‘rarely used.’”

The team also enabled the new smartphones’ Adaptive Power Saving mode to activate automatically2 based on users’ usage patterns. Hyeonsu Lee described how it works: “If, for example, a user usually uses their phone for 30 minutes on their way to work, Adaptive Power Saving mode will automatically activate if their commute happens to get extended.”

“And because this mode is AI-powered,” he added, “the more it’s used, the more accurate it becomes.”

Each member of the product planning and development teams agrees that Samsung’s latest battery innovations will unlock unprecedented user experiences.

Moon concluded the interview by shedding some light on the company’s ultimate goals for its charging technology. “With Wireless PowerShare, we not only expect to resolve some of the inconvenient aspects of charging your devices,” said Moon. “We also expect people to communicate and engage with one another more.”

“Listening carefully to users’ feedback has enabled us to consistently improve our Galaxy smartphones,” added Kim, “and it will continue to do so. Going forward, we’ll continue to strive to develop battery technology that offers the very best in terms of users’ convenience and experience.”
