Samsung Electronics today announced the availability of Galaxy AI1 features on more Galaxy devices through a new One UI 6.1 update engineered to further the democratization of mobile AI. The update will be available across the Galaxy S23 series, S23 FE, Z Fold5, Z Flip5 and Tab S9 series, starting to roll out from the end of March. Aligning with the recently launched Galaxy S24 series,2 this update elevates the standard of users’ mobile AI experience through a hybrid approach that combines on-device and cloud-based AI.

“Our goal with Galaxy AI is not only to pioneer a new era of mobile AI but also to empower users by making AI more accessible,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics. “This is only the beginning of Galaxy AI, as we plan to bring the experience to over 100 million Galaxy users within 2024 and continue to innovate ways to harness the unlimited possibilities of mobile AI.”

Communication That Transcends Barriers

Even more Galaxy users will now be able to take advantage of the communication-enhancing Galaxy AI features available on AI-supported models. The features include the ability to adjust message tone and translate messages in 13 different languages using Chat Assist.3 Galaxy users can experience the power of real-time interactions through Live Translate,4 which provides voice and text translations for phone calls. With Interpreter, users can also engage in spontaneous conversations with locals while traveling as the split-screen feature generates text translations for live conversations.

Productivity Unparalleled

The broader integration of Galaxy AI across the Galaxy ecosystem also enables a seamless user experience in day-to-day tasks on AI-supported models, driving new levels of efficiency. Search functions are improved through Circle to Search with Google,5 which generates intuitive search results with a swift circle-motioned gesture. Life-enhancing organization features such as Note Assist6 allow users to create formats, generate summaries and translate notes, while Browsing Assist7 enables individuals to stay up to speed faster by generating comprehensive summaries of news articles. Transcript Assist can also easily transcribe meeting recordings and generate summaries and translations.

Samsung Electronics today launched the One UI 6 beta program for users of its Galaxy S23 series.1 Based on Android 14, One UI 6 enables a more user-friendly experience, bringing a complete package of enhancements to Samsung apps and features including a more streamlined design and wider options for personalization. The beta program is an important precursor to the public release because it enables the collection and incorporation of real user feedback, ensuring the official software update delivers the best experience possible.

“Our mission with One UI is to reflect the unique preferences of our users in every aspect of their mobile experience,” said Janghyun Yoon, Executive Vice President and Head of the Software Office, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics. “Every iteration of One UI responds to the needs of our user community, and we look forward to user feedback on One UI 6 as we create a richer, more intuitive experience for all.”

Simplicity and Ease of Access

One UI 6 makes a compelling first impression with its beautiful simplicity. Many elements have been tweaked to create a more modern look and feel, such as the impactful new default font and the new emojis on Samsung Keyboard. The Quick Panel has been revamped with an updated layout that makes it effortless for users to access their most used features. It is easier than ever to adjust screen visibility on the go as the brightness control bar is available by default in the compact Quick Panel. Furthermore, there is also a new instant access option to the full Quick Panel, providing faster access to settings with a single downward swipe at the upper right corner of the screen.2

More Ways To Personalize Your Experience

One UI 6 is loaded with great new ways for users to customize the Galaxy experience based on their own habits and preferences, so it feels even more like an extension of themselves. For instance, it is now possible to set different lock screens according to specific Modes and Routines, such as a calming photo of a forest in Sleep Mode. There is also a new custom camera widget, which lets users preselect a camera mode and a storage location — like portrait mode and a folder just for headshots.

Join the One UI 6 Beta Program

These innovations are just a few of the upgrades that come with One UI 6. In addition to enhanced aesthetics and higher levels of personalization, the software update simplifies everyday tasks to maximize productivity. One UI 6 also offers robust security and privacy, so users can enjoy mobile connectivity and convenience with total peace of mind.

Galaxy S23 series users are invited to join the One UI 6 beta program and be among the first to try out the latest enhancements and share valuable feedback. The program is available in the United States, Germany and South Korea starting today.

1 Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra.

As the popularity of smartphones has increased, so too has the popularity of mobile games in the mainstream gaming market. Today, more and more consumers want to experience their PC and console games with brilliant graphics on their mobile devices, driving up the expectations for smartphone gaming performance.

The Galaxy S23 series, Samsung Electronics’ flagship smartphone unveiled on February 1, boasts the best and most powerful GPU, which enhances performance by 41% compared to the previous version, and Ray Tracing, which brings true-to-life lighting to mobile gaming, have gained the attention of gamers worldwide.

Samsung Newsroom sat down with the developers of Ray Tracing, recently introduced to the Galaxy S23 series, to understand the story behind how the team upgraded the mobile gaming experience. Read on to learn more about one of the biggest leaps in smartphone gaming graphics in years.

Ray Tracing: Level Up Your Gaming Experience With True-to-Life Graphics

Ray Tracing is the latest rendering method that manifests graphic effects in real time by tracing rays of light. The Galaxy S23 series’ GPU is equipped with special-purpose hardware to accelerate these ray tracing simulations similar to a desktop GPU, displaying shadows and light reflections in mobile games in a much more realistic manner.

▲ (From the left) Jungwoo Kim and Joonyong Park, the developers of Ray Tracing technology from the System Platform R&D Group of Samsung Electronics’ MX Business

System Platform Development Group’s Jungwoo Kim, who managed the GPU development for the Galaxy S23 series, described Ray Tracing technology as “the ultimate graphic rendering method.”

“Ray Tracing is a complex simulation that traces how the optic nerve of an eye receives a ray of light after being reflected, refracted or diffracted by an object,” said Kim. “It’s very similar to how light is actually processed.”

“The previous rasterization technique is limited, resulting in awkward and inaccurate expressions,” said Joonyong Park, who managed GPU technical support and both internal and external cooperation for this new product. “When it comes to the shadow effect, for instance, the previous method used to project an object on a scene to create a shadow map in advance and adjust that on the object again. On the other hand, Ray Tracing simulates the actual effect of how shadows are formed, which appears accurately and realistically onscreen — so users can enjoy more natural-looking graphics.”

Bridging the Gap Between Desktop and Mobile Graphics With the Galaxy S23 Series

Since 2010, Samsung has focused on breaking down the barriers between console, desktop and mobile by expanding the performance and range of its graphics API (application programming interface). By partnering with major industry players, Samsung has led the way in standardizing its latest technology as the common API. In doing so, more companies can easily apply the latest technology to more games and expand their relevant ecosystems.

“In 2016, we standardized the next-generation graphics API called Vulkan released by the Khronos Group and succeeded in commercialization through the Galaxy S7,” said Kim. “But, we’ve been working on advanced GPU development with partners like Epic Games and Unity to optimize the performance of Android games since 2015, before Vulkan was integrated into Galaxy devices. The optimization code we acquired by working together was provided to game developers first and made the successful case for Vulkan and engine optimization. The achievement was presented at various developer conferences.”

▲ Jungwoo Kim from the System Platform R&D Group of Samsung Electronics’ MX Business

In line with the recent rising trends in cross-platform games, Samsung rapidly applied desktop GPU technology to their mobile GPU. “With close cooperation with the AP vendors, we’ve continued to improve the performance of the latest mobile GPU for flagship products,” said Park. “With the rise in consumers demanding that the graphic quality on their mobile devices matches the quality of consoles, we’ve been preparing to offer Ray Tracing technology in mobile game engines since two years ago,” he said, describing his team’s proactive effort to lead this mobile innovation.

Multi-Player Collaboration Driving Mobile Performance

The developers cooperated with Samsung R&D Institute Ukraine (SRUKR) and various partner companies, including Epic Games, the developer of Unreal Engine, to prepare the best graphics.

▲ Galaxy Unpacked 2023 demo content was created in partnership with Epic Games. Compared to the previous rasterization rendering method (right), the Ray Tracing method (left) simulates more realistic graphics.

Kim explained that the demo contents introduced at the Galaxy Unpacked 2023 were a team effort. “This is an area that we’ve been working on in collaboration with a game engine developer and game developers,” said Kim. “We kept making various attempts for efficient rendering. As a result, we were able to overcome challenges by reducing the number of computations while maintaining the same level of quality.”

Park also shared an episode from when he was working on the Galaxy S7 product development.

“I remember developing a content demonstration at the Epic Games head office in North Carolina in the U.S.,” said Park. “We successfully rendered a demo game where a chicken character appeared using the Vulkan API for the first time. As soon as the chicken character appeared for the first time after fixing an error, everyone from Epic Games, SRUKR and colleagues from MX R&D team all cheered. Then, we all celebrated with a dinner party, where we all ate fried chicken.” Park thanked his colleagues with whom he had worked so hard to achieve this feat.

Galaxy S23 Series Opens a New Paradigm for Mobile Gaming

So what does the future look like in which Ray Tracing technology is commercialized? “From now on, I expect the pipeline of creating and consuming graphic content to change in a way that is aligned with Ray Tracing,” said Park. “In this process, we expect that mobile devices with both portability and high-performance hardware on par with consoles will contribute to the changes.”

Samsung Electronics’ new Galaxy S23 series delivers an eco-conscious, premium smartphone experience to its users. By eliminating unnecessary elements and prioritizing quality, the Galaxy S23 series embodies those values Samsung itself also holds close, such as resource circulation for a better future for all.

Samsung Newsroom spoke with some of the Galaxy S23 series’ designers to learn more about how the new flagship range’s distinct design came about.

Premium Design With an Eco-Conscious Focus

Q. Please introduce the Galaxy S23 series’ design theme, “Create the Essentials”.

Our focus was on creating a design that boils down the essence of the smartphone. Resources can be wasted during the production process if too many unnecessary details are incorporated, so we made the decision to retain only the bare essential design features, based on the true identity of the device, for the basis of the Galaxy S23 series’ design.

Q: How is this theme in alignment with the general direction of the Samsung Galaxy design approach?

The Samsung Galaxy S series is a product lineup built on the true essence of what premium design can be. For the Galaxy S23 series, we deliberated extensively on what elements would not only make for a great design, but also how they would impact the world at large. Since we are living in a time where resource circulation and eco-conscious activities are at the forefront of daily life, we feel, too, that designers should reflect these values in their designs as the world over shifts its priorities towards eco-consciousness. Our design approach actively incorporates these ideas by making bold design decisions and incorporating future-forward ideas.

Q: What are the Galaxy design team’s goals towards creating designs that honor both people as well as the planet?

Our approach can be summarized in the form of five goals. Firstly, we aim to “create essence” through our designs for ultimate user satisfaction. Secondly, we want to “create circularity” to increase resource circulation efforts across the entire product lifecycle from manufacturing through to use and disposal. Thirdly, we aspire to “create standardization” in order to streamline our designs and subsequently reduce resource waste and manufacturing costs, and fourthly, to “create longevity” for our products by extending their life cycles and building easily fixable designs. Finally, we aim to “create transparency” through clear communication on the metrics of our design processes with a focus on eco-conscious activities. All Samsung Galaxy designers are guided by these five goals.

Q: Can you share more about how the design team is following through on these goals?

All projects we undertake keep the long-term vision in mind instead of short-term results, and we collaborate closely with the material sourcing teams to ensure our designs incorporate recycled materials. We also share our design strategy and plans with a range of internal stakeholders in order to further vitalize each project with different ideas and perspectives. We make sure to reflect on all the feedback we receive in order to keep eco-consciousness at front of mind when designing.

Q: How important is working with such an authentic mission in mind to the team?

We live in a world where the sharing of information is boundless, making temporary or short-term initiatives meaningless. We embrace the opportunity to think carefully about the values and efforts necessary required to accomplish our vision, as well as how best to communicate our approach transparently. This sense of mission as designers motivates us, and in time, we believe our customers, too, will come to understand and appreciate our determination.

The Samsung Galaxy Identity

Q: Can you share more about the two different designs, based on target audience, you developed for the Galaxy S23 series?

The Galaxy S23 and S23+ feature thin bezels that are slim and balanced on all sides for users to better focus on their screens, while a curved metal frame both protects the screen and provides the user with a comfortable grip. For the Galaxy S23 Ultra, we reduced the side edges and extended the flat surface of the device even further not only to provide better grip, but also to provide more space in which the S Pen can be utilized and ultimately maximize the benefits of the large screen for the user.

Our focus when designing was to convey a consistent design identity across all three devices through simple line design and planes that eliminate all unnecessary elements. Even the more subtle elements, such as the side keys, antenna slit, speaker hole and mic hole, had their size and layout meticulously adjusted to match this. Furthermore, the camera contour cut design seen on the Galaxy S22 and S22+ was removed, and all Galaxy S23 models are now fitted with a single camera design to provide even more consistency across the lineup.

Q: Would you agree that the Galaxy S23 series’ camera’s distinct design is as notable as its performance?

Since a lot of the smartphones currently on the market possess a similar shape, the camera design of a device has become a powerful way to distinguish a product and express brand identity. This is why the Samsung Galaxy S series’ camera layout has stayed the same since the Galaxy S21 series in order to foster a unique design identity.

The external part of the camera is a glossy metal while the internal parts have been processed with smooth hairlines in order to convey the camera’s powerful performance. The design of the inner elements of the camera, including the form, texture and color, were inspired by traditional camera lenses that minimize light reflection.

Future-Forward Color Swatches, Inspired by Nature

Q: Can you please introduce the main colors of the Galaxy S23 series?

Some of the Galaxy S23 series’ components were built using recycled materials1 to contribute to resource circulation, so in order to further reflect this idea of environmental protection, the Galaxy S23 series comes in four colors that are based on a concept we call “Shades of Nature”. The Green shade is reminiscent of a tranquil forest while Phantom Black embodies the silent strength of nature, and the bright Cream shade is warming to look at while Lavender captures the energetic nature of everyday life.

Four additional colors that we developed under the concept of “Shades in Dream” — Lime, Skyblue, Red and Graphite2 — will be exclusively available for devices purchased online. We wanted to provide online customers with some upbeat and futuristic shades that convey their brightness even when simply seen on-screen. The Lime shade, a brand-new addition to the Samsung Galaxy color lineup, has been designed to be a lively and captivating color swatch, and we hope our users will enjoy this new addition to the Samsung Galaxy color range.

Q: Can you speak more about the recycled materials used in part of the Galaxy S23 series’ back panel glass3?

Recycled materials based on plastic bottles can tend to have a yellowish tint to them, so we were initially worried that the coloring might end up too dark. However, after we processed the materials, we were surprised to find that this recycled material actually helped to create a more natural and organic look for the Cream shade.

Designed With the Planet in Mind

Q: Can you share more about the expansion of recycled materials involved in the Galaxy S23 series’ development?

The front and back glass panels of the Galaxy S23 series devices contain an average of 22% of pre-consumer recycled content, and the film that goes inside the back glass panel incorporates 80% of recycled plastics sourced from discarded plastic bottles. Furthermore, the inner components of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, including the S Pen cover and the lower speaker modules, have been built using recycled ocean-bound plastic sourced from discarded fishnets and plastic bottles, and aluminum byproducts from the manufacturing process were used for the S23 Ultra’s side and volume keys.

Furthermore, the packaging box is made from 100% recycled paper and the cover accessory also contains some recycled or biodegradable materials, meaning that all aspects of the Galaxy S23 series’ design reflect our commitment to the circulation of resources.

Q: What efforts have been made to create more eco-conscious packaging designs over the years?

We started to reduce the use of plastic in our packaging designs in 2018. When we first started, we had fourteen different packaging parts within a single package, and now for Galaxy S23 series, we have come a long way to ensure that only six packaging parts4 are included. We also made sure to leverage recycled paper materials when building the packaging box itself, and though paper materials made from 100% recycled pulp can be dusty and weaker than regular paper, we undertook extensive research, adjusted the manufacturing process and went through countless quality verification tests to find the perfect composition to use in our product packaging.

Q: What areas will you be focusing on for future package designs?

We will continue to focus on creating high-quality packaging that incorporates recycled paper materials. Our goal is to create our own paper materials made with pulp that we have developed ourselves, as well as to receive recognition for our eco-conscious designs.

Samsung is committed to pursuing innovation that does not take the planet’s resources for granted and that instead repurposes discarded materials in order to give them a second life, thus providing users with true, meaningful value. The Samsung Galaxy S series will continue to bridge the gap between usability and eco-consciousness through future-forward design choices.

Stay tuned to Samsung Newsroom for more on the all-new Galaxy S23 series.

Samsung Electronics today announced One UI 5.1, which was newly unveiled with the Galaxy S23 series at Galaxy Unpacked 2023, will begin to roll out worldwide

Samsung Electronics today announced One UI 5.1, which was newly unveiled with the Galaxy S23 series at Galaxy Unpacked 2023, will begin to roll out worldwide for other Galaxy devices starting with the Galaxy S22 series,1 Z Fold4, Z Flip4, S21 series2 and S20 series.3 With One UI 5.1, Galaxy devices will deliver a more visually appealing interface with new features that enable greater creativity and personalization for a more convenient experience overall.

“One UI 5.1 is the up-to-date example of Samsung’s commitment to providing Galaxy users with the latest innovations as soon as possible,” said Janghyun Yoon, EVP and Senior Executive, Software Office. “Over the past several weeks, we have worked closely with our service providers and carrier partners to bring One UI 5.1 to current Galaxy smartphones and tablets around the world within a few short weeks of the Galaxy S23 series announcement.”

Professional-Quality Camera and More Engaging Gallery

One UI 5.1 expands upon the recently upgraded camera features announced with the Galaxy S23 series. Galaxy users now have greater flexibility to create professional quality photos with Expert RAW4 features now available directly as part of the Galaxy Camera app. Simply select “More” while taking a photo to capture high-quality shots in their raw format. Additionally, enhanced AI-based Photo Remaster automatically improves deteriorated details of images by improving brightness, fine-tuning details and making color corrections even in backlit scenes. It also removes unwanted shadows and reflections for a picture-perfect photo.5

New navigation improvements also make it easier than ever to find photos within the Gallery app and create shared family albums.6 Simply tap a person’s face in a photo to conduct a search for more images while the Gallery app searches for faces of loved ones to recommend for family photo albums.

A Unique Mobile Experience Personalized for Every User

Samsung has long been focused on giving Galaxy users greater control over their devices by customizing various user interface aspects. One UI 5.1 delivers several exciting new features that allow people to fine-tune nearly every aspect of the mobile experience — from appearance, to communications, actions and more. Samsung introduced new features that can understand how devices are used and make recommendations accordingly. For example, the new dynamic weather widget analyzes current conditions and creates a custom design that reflects the climate. Modes and Routines have expanded to enable custom wallpapers, ringtones, touch sensitivity and fonts that can personalize specific activities for even more convenience. One UI 5.1 also improves the Smart suggestions widget7 by adding the ability to recommend Spotify8 tracks and playlists based on users’ activities, such as music for road trips or relaxing.

Greater Connectivity Throughout Galaxy Ecosystem

Samsung has also developed One UI to bring greater integration and connectivity throughout the mobile ecosystem and introduced features supporting this mission. Users can enjoy a connected ecosystem across their mobile and PC with expanded Multi Control between Galaxy Book and smartphones.9 This enables users to share the mouse, keyboard or trackpad of their Galaxy Book not only with their Galaxy tablet but now also with select Galaxy phones, allowing them to copy and paste text and drag and drop images from one device to another seamlessly — as if they’re the same, single device. Furthermore, Link to Windows enables users to browse with Samsung Internet on their phones to continue browsing the same pages on their PC10 seamlessly. These pages can also be opened from one device to another, making everyday life much easier.

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Series is the new standard-bearer of a trustworthy premium smartphone experience, merging power and lasting innovation in devices that have less environmental impact. Samsung R&D Institute Bangalore (SRI-B) is Samsung’s largest software R&D center outside South Korea and has contributed to the development of breakthrough innovations in the new Galaxy S23 series by closely collaborating with Korea teams and other Overseas R&D centers like Samsung Research America (SRA).

SRI-B engineers contributed significantly in the development of key features in camera, multi-device experience (SmartThings), on-device AI, 5G and Services in Galaxy S23.

“Our innovations are inspired by young consumers, who are the window to the future. Their curiosity, energy and wonder, together with the expertise and skills of our experts enable us to create breakthrough technology in smartphone camera, 5G and multi-device experience. Galaxy S23 series will delight our consumers and present them with their daily dose of awe and excitement,” said Mohan Rao Goli, CTO of Samsung R&D Institute India – Bangalore.

Camera

SRI-B engineers have been focusing on continuous R&D efforts to enhance the smartphone photography experience in every flagship devices. The new Galaxy S23 series, equipped with a pro-grade AI camera system, can capture amazing photos and videos even in low-light conditions. Inspired by our young and talented engineers, our experts in the domain passionately worked on computational photography and Vision AI technology to help enhance features including Nightography, Pro-grade Video, High-Resolution HDR and Astrophotography in Expert RAW.

SRI-B engineers with strong expertise in Visual Intelligence and depth estimation along with 2PD dual pixel hardware sensor capabilities, significantly enhanced key features like Selfie Portrait and Autofocus for video in Galaxy S23 series. The Expert RAW app, first launched in Galaxy S22 series, now supports 50MP resolution in the rear camera and has been extended to support front camera.

In order to provide the best capture, edit and share experience, SRI-B engineers have contributed to the development of Photo Remaster and Object Eraser features. In Galaxy S23 series, it is further enhanced with the introduction of the AI-Interactive Contour Segmentation tool, through which users can draw around a particular object in a photo to select and convert it to objects and stickers that can be inserted in another image.

SmartThings

The multi-device experiences in the Galaxy S23 series offer users enhanced connectivity and customization to improve their daily lives. In particular, the Smart Lighting service, developed by SRI-B, focuses on enhancing the personal well-being of users. The Circadian Lighting service customizes the relative colour values of a smart light bulb to mimic the natural light from the Sun throughout the day. Additionally, the Gentle Wakeup and Wind Down settings help users gently adjust by slowly brightening or reducing the intensity of smart lights at home to imitate sunrise and sunset effects.

SRI-B also contributed to the development of seamless IoT device registration services known as ‘Calm Technology’ and has been part of the team to achieve the world’s first Matter-certified IoT eco system device. SRI-B engineers have developed services that allow consumers to set the mood, create their own personal space, and save energy for sustainable living at the touch of a button and with simple automations in SmartThings.

One UI 5 Intelligence Experiences

To enhance the Galaxy’s One UI experience, SRI-B team contributed to On Device Intelligence powered Personalization, Productivity & Automation features which provide convenience in consumers’ daily lives. Smart suggestions based on phone usage proactively suggests App and App Actions, Security and privacy dashboard to see device status in one place and provides complete control in the hands of consumers. When sharing an image with private information on Share Panel, it warns if you can unwittingly share sensitive data in advance. Furthermore, users can easily extract text from images and take quick actions like Call, Email and Navigation, etc. Students can simply take a screenshot and long press on any text to copy, search, and translate such content easily.
