• Knox Matrix monitors devices through Trust Chain, a secure private blockchain — and the new Knox Matrix dashboard introduces an easier way to maintain transparent security across a connected device ecosystem. With One UI 7, it’s more intuitive than ever to check the security status of multiple Samsung smart devices, including Galaxy mobile devices, TVs and home appliances, at a glance. When all connected devices are up to date and no risks are detected, they will show as ‘green,’ or secure. Users can also see if a device is at risk, and the dashboard will prompt an actionable recommendation to mitigate the threat.
• A new recovery method for Enhanced Data Protection adds ease and convenience to the process of retrieving data stored on Samsung Cloud. Enhanced Data Protection keeps connected devices synchronized and secure, also ensuring that if access to a trusted device is lost, users have a backup plan to prevent the loss of their data. With One UI 7, users can now transfer recovered, private data to a new device by verifying the lock screen factor — whether pin, pattern or password — of their previous device.
• As part of Knox Matrix’s Credential Sync, Samsung has developed new ways to manage and secure identities and credentials for today’s hyperconnected world in the form of passkeys.² With One UI 7, users can now create and use passkeys to log into their Samsung Account. As digital authentication credentials, passkeys enable a faster, easier way to securely log in to apps, devices and websites — so users can safely sign into their TVs, AI Family Hub refrigerator and more, simply by using the fingerprint sensor on their smartphones.

Maximum Restrictions Boost User Control

Maximum Restrictions establishes a powerful line of defense against today’s cyber threats. One UI 7 further enhances user choice with new features designed to protect those who may need additional safeguards. Maximum Restrictions has been updated with added controls for network connections so users can enjoy the peace of mind that comes from boosted protection without losing access to key device functionalities. Thanks to the added controls, users have the choice to block 2G service and prevent data from being intercepted when connected to potentially unsafe networks. Users can also prevent unintended automatic reconnection to certain Wi-Fi networks³ that may be less secure, ensuring data remains private while still having the option to connect manually if desired.

This update enhances Maximum Restrictions’ existing suite of protections for Samsung Messages and Samsung Gallery, which allows users to remove location data in shared photos, prevent automatic attachment downloads and block hyperlinks, previews and shared albums.

More Security Settings Bring Added Device Protection

One UI 7 introduces even more ways users can adjust security settings to best suit the ways in which they use their device. Users can choose to block USB connections to prevent any other access through the USB port while the device is locked, except for battery charging.

To protect against malicious apps that come from sideloading, One UI 7’s new Safe Install system works alongside Auto Blocker to send a warning when a user attempts to download from an unauthorized source, alerting them of security risks and preventing unintentional sideloading on Galaxy devices worldwide.⁴

Theft Protection Enhances Data Privacy

One UI 7 introduces new features available only on Galaxy devices to the Android suite of theft protection solutions, enhancing the safeguards in place to ensure personal data remains secure even when devices are lost or stolen. In addition to Theft Detection Lock,⁵ Offline Device Lock and Remote Lock, Galaxy users can now leverage additional security measures in Identity Check, an opt-in feature designed for when a device’s PIN becomes compromised. If suspicious activity is detected, users can rest assured that these Galaxy-exclusive protections will kick in.

• When in an unfamiliar location, biometric authentication will be required to make any changes to important security settings that could put personal information at risk.
• As an added safeguard, a one-hour security delay will prevent unauthorized users from making any immediate changes to the device.

Enhanced AI Enables More Intuitive User Experiences  

One UI 7 brings powerful updates to Galaxy AI features¹ including advanced writing assist tools. Integrated into AI OS, they allow users to boost their productivity where texts can be selected, without needing to switch between applications. This capability expands on the powerful writing assist tools already available to Galaxy users, offering AI-powered options to summarize content, check spelling and grammar, and automatically format notes into bullet points.

Upgraded call features with One UI 7 push the boundaries of communication and connection through call transcripts, with support for 20 languages.² When call recording is enabled, recorded calls will automatically be transcribed for reference later on, eliminating the need to take notes manually while multi-tasking.

Bold New Design for Greater Personalization and Control  

One UI 7’s powerful AI features come with a significant new look, based on a new notification system that streamlines communication with easy access from the device’s lock screen. It includes Now Bar, which highlights relevant activities across various features like Interpreter, Music, Recording, Stopwatch and more. By offering instant access to important notifications, Now Bar reduces the need to constantly unlock the device and allows users to engage with key information effortlessly. Set to be supported on upcoming Galaxy S series devices, Now Bar will transform the lock screen experience, which will continue to evolve with more intelligent experiences in the future.

A simplified home screen, redesigned One UI widgets and lock screen — among other features — work together to grant users granular control over every detail and make customization intuitive and seamless.

A redesigned camera UX allows more intuitive control over advanced settings. Camera buttons, controls and modes have been reorganized to make it easier to find the features you need and to give you a clearer preview of the picture you’re taking or the video you’re recording.

For Pro and Pro video modes, the manual settings layout has also been simplified, making it easier to focus on the picture or video you’re shooting. A new zoom control is available when you’re recording in Pro video mode, allowing you to control the zoom speed for smooth transitions.

Auto Blocker

Auto Blocker is all about choice — providing an opt-in package of additional security measures so that you are completely in control to choose whether you want to explore the customizations enabled by Galaxy’s ecosystem. Auto Blocker will protect your Galaxy device and personal data by preventing app installations from unauthorized sources. The feature will also check for malware and other cybersecurity threats, immediately blocking any malicious activity that could come as a result.

One example of Auto Blocker in action is the prevention of what many people call sideloading, or downloading apps from unverified sources. There are numerous benefits to intentional sideloading, such as added customizations to your phone. But if you do not typically sideload, potential attacks that can come in the form of social engineering fraud like voice phishing — in which threat actors trick you over the phone and talk you into installing malicious software.

The extra level of protection that Auto Blocker provides also stops harmful commands from entering your physical USB port — which could come in handy when charging your phone through an outlet at a public space like an airport.

Turning on Auto Blocker is a quick and simple process that takes less than a minute. Open Settings, go to Security and Privacy, then tap Auto Blocker and select On.

Message Guard

Cybersecurity threats come in many forms, and each year they become even more sophisticated. One threat that is becoming increasingly common is the zero-click attack, which exploits vulnerabilities in your device software. This can take place any time an image is received and does not require any action whatsoever on the user’s part.

For instance, your phone receives an image and vibrates gently in your pocket or on your bedside table before going still. You haven’t touched your phone or facilitated any input, but someone may already be reading your messages, browsing your gallery or copying your bank details.

Samsung’s Message Guard will neutralize any potential threats that might be hiding in the image before it has a chance to do any harm by effectively trapping the file in an isolated space on your device. While the image is put into quarantine, Samsung Message Guard checks the file bit by bit — processing it in a controlled environment to prevent infection to the rest of your device.

Message Guard works with a range of popular messaging apps that you probably already use, from Google and Samsung apps to Messenger, Telegram and WhatsApp. You don’t need to worry about initiating the process either since Message Guard runs silently and effectively 24/7 in the background without needing to be activated in any way.

We believe our hybrid approach is the most practical and reliable solution to meet all these needs and puts Samsung ahead of the curve. We made the Live Translate feature on-device AI based because voice calls are the most basic feature of a smartphone, yet also an intimate and private means of communication. Samsung has committed to empowering users to communicate without language barriers, while at the same time ensuring every communication is safe and private.

To make this feature a reality, our R&D team worked day and night as part of a collaborative process that truly brought out the best in our teams. From determining the right size of AI language models to training and testing in real-life scenarios, our R&D organizations within the MX business challenged themselves and pushed beyond the limits of what we thought was possible to get this feature running entirely on-device.

Samsung’s global R&D networks around the world, which are in charge of growing the best talents and developing core technologies in each region, have also played a pivotal role. Samsung Research Centers around the globe, including Poland, China, India and Vietnam, have dedicated themselves to developing and expanding the languages supported by Galaxy AI. Languages are very cultural, contemporary and localized, so to help people break down language barriers and communicate more naturally, the role of our local R&D offices is even more crucial in opening up new possibilities for users in more regions than ever before.

All these efforts have enabled Samsung to offer something completely new which I’m excited to share. Soon, Samsung is extending the power of Galaxy AI beyond Samsung’s own native calling app by expanding Live Translate to other third-party message apps to support voice calls. So you can stay in contact with friends or colleagues, communicating on your favorite apps in multiple languages.

And since this feature has been integrated into our on-device AI language translation model, users will be able to experience barrier-free communication without worrying about privacy issues like personal data being shared outside their phone when using Live Translate.

I expect that more and more mobile AI features will be incorporated inside mobile devices as the intelligent computing power of the latest chips — particularly NPUs — advances at a blazing fast speed, along with other technologies. This will enable more people to embrace AI and make every day more convenient while offering greater peace of mind.

Smooth Communication and Strong Security With On-Device AI

On-device AI is the key differentiator to Galaxy AI’s Interpreter and Live Translate features — introduced to users through the release of the Galaxy S24 series earlier this year. Leveraging the advanced computing resources built into the devices themselves, smartphones with on-device AI can provide services without relying on servers or the cloud. Users can be assured that their data will remain private and secure since information is not shared with external sources.

Samsung Research’s Global AI Center contributed to integrating proprietary technology into its AI translation model to commercialize these features for widespread use.

Envisioning a wide range of applications, the Samsung Research team and MX R&D Office obtained an expansive amount of data. “We collected colloquial data for real-time translation during calls in Live Translate and travel-related data for Interpreter,” explained Yoonjung Choi, who led the project. “To provide the most accurate translation, we studied and incorporated casual language used in chatrooms and HTML tags used in web browsers.”

How Samsung Research Trained Its AI Model

The Samsung Research team’s AI translation model is based on deep learning technology that learns from its own data. Yonghyun Ryu, who is in charge of AI research and development, likened this process to raising a child. “Similar to how a child needs excellent educational resources and caregivers to grow and thrive, good language data and talented researchers are required when developing a high-performance AI translation model,” he described.

Samsung Research has both — since 2013, the company has been providing in-house translation services, conducting R&D related to AI translation and accumulating high-quality data.

Samsung Research’s team of deep learning experts played an important role in training the AI model. “If incorrect translations occur during the research and development process, it is necessary to identify the problem and make improvements. However, this can be challenging and time-consuming for researchers without sufficient capabilities and experience,” he explained. “Our researchers used their expertise and know-how to quickly analyze the cause of the issue and come up with a solution to enhance the AI translation model.”

To assess the performance of Galaxy AI’s translations, the Samsung Research team used quantitative metrics based on test sets as well as qualitative evaluations by human translators and the MX R&D Office.

In addition, the team gained credibility by competing in global machine translation competitions. “Although participation requires time and effort, good performance in competitions provides momentum for research and development,” Ryu emphasized. “We were able to achieve strong results because our team members could freely discuss new ideas and put them to the test.”

Politeness and Punctuation: Understanding the Quirks of Each Language

Each language has characteristics that are unique to its culture — these can include honorifics, tonal inflections and distinct punctuation symbols. To make translations as accurate as possible, the AI translation model considers all these linguistic idiosyncrasies. For example, in Korean and Japanese, honorifics are translated to maintain a respectful tone.

Samsung collaborated with regional R&D centers to fully understand languages in their cultural context. “By working closely with researchers and linguists in other countries, we were able to offer a more accurate and complete translation,” said Choi.

At the same time, dealing with different languages often involves trial and error. “Vietnamese, for instance, is a tonal language. However, we realized during the research process that Vietnamese users often omit tones in casual conversations when chatting,” she explained. “We needed additional data to help the features translate sentences without tones.” For Thai, Samsung Research developed a special sentence separator because the language does not use punctuation.

Why Lightweight Technology Is the Key to Effective On-Device AI Models

Samsung Research began developing its on-device AI translation model in 2019. “Unlike server-based AI models, on-device AI models must be driven only using users’ devices,” stated Ryu. “Developing lightweight technology that uses minimal resources is key.” To make the model lighter, the team used “knowledge distillation” and “quantization” technology.

Knowledge distillation is a method that extracts knowledge from a large, high-performing teacher model and delivers it to a smaller student model. This is similar to how a teacher summarizes a topic so that a student can digest the information more easily and efficiently.

Quantization simplifies AI algorithms to reduce model size and streamlines the process to increase response speed.

Ryu compared quantization to drawing strawberries. “You need a wide range of colors to paint lifelike strawberries — but strawberries can also be made with just red and green,” he explained. “Quantization is the process of minimizing the number of colors needed to draw strawberries while trying to make it as close as possible to the real thing.”

In the AI field, knowledge distillation and quantization are well-known approaches to making models lighter. Yet, implementing them on a commercial scale is not easy due to differences in each researcher’s detailed experimental methods and factors. Samsung Research developed proprietary technology by discovering an efficient quantization technique and creating a accelerated algorithm based on it. “Through constant experimentation, we found an optimal way to make the model lighter,” commented Choi.

By combining the high-quality AI translation model with algorithms that make models lighter and speed up response time, lightweight and fast on-device AI features were born.

The Culture Behind the Language: What Would the Perfect AI Translation Model Look Like?

The researchers at Samsung Research’s Global AI Center have bright goals as they lead the field of on-device AI. “My ultimate goal is to help users communicate smoothly and conveniently with people who speak other languages,” said Choi. Ryu revealed his vision to build the perfect translator. “One day, we want to create a translator that truly understands the cultures behind the languages it is translating, equipped with an extensive pool of knowledge,” he expressed. “I want to challenge myself to develop a translator the world has never seen before.”

Samsung Electronics today announced the availability of Galaxy AI¹ features on more Galaxy devices through a new One UI 6.1 update engineered to further the democratization of mobile AI. The update will be available across the Galaxy S23 series, S23 FE, Z Fold5, Z Flip5 and Tab S9 series, starting to roll out from the end of March. Aligning with the recently launched Galaxy S24 series,² this update elevates the standard of users’ mobile AI experience through a hybrid approach that combines on-device and cloud-based AI.
