Gen Z and millennials from across India took to breaking stereotypes associated with the country through the Samsung ‘India Ready Action’ campaign, using video as their medium of expression.

 

 

After a four-week long successful campaign that saw 161.8 million engagements on Instagram and Facebook, the videos sent by participants showcased a different India – the Real India that its youth want to show the world. This made #IndiaReadyAction the most engaging campaign on Instagram and Facebook in the last one year.

 

Interestingly, it is millennials from non-metro cities across India who led this change-showcase through their videos. Video entries during the campaign came from diverse places such as Gangtok, Sangli, Pauri, Jorhat, Nayagarh, Kedarnath, Morbi, Bharuch, and Ganderbal, to name a few.

 

A recent survey by Samsung, India’s Most Trusted mobile and consumer electronics brand, found several stereotypes about India exist in the minds of foreigners. To them, the Taj Mahal or river Ganga are the only major tourist attractions in the country, food means curries and spices, entertainment is only Bollywood and Cricket. There is little awareness of the other possibilities in Real India.

 

Riding on young India’s love for expressing themselves through videos, the #IndiaReadyAction campaign urged Gen Z and millennials in India to share their vision of Real India through videos that help break stereotypes that exist about the country. Gen Z and millennials today are not just content consumers, they are also content creators. They are also very socially conscious, driven by a zest for India.

 

“At Samsung, we take pride in our understanding of what Indian millennials seek. #IndiaReadyAction provided young millennials a platform to showcase Real India through their video creation capabilities. The campaign drew strong participation with millennials from across the country sending in their unique video content, attempting to break several stereotypes that exist about India,” Ranjivjit Singh, Chief Marketing Officer, Samsung India, said.

 

“Millennials live in the ‘Era of Live’ and this campaign established that video is fast becoming their preferred medium of expression. Our recently launched Galaxy A series smartphones and Samsung Smart TVs enable people to move to an Era of Live,” he added.

Over 45% of the entries focused on breaking stereotypes about ‘Places’, clearly indicating that youngsters have a strong connect with their own cities. From the Blue Mountains of Ooty to Vagamon in Kerala, from the valleys of Spiti to Bhilwara in Rajasthan to Andaman’s scenic Mayabunder, youngsters shared videos of these places just as they shared the architectural wonders of Gwalior Fort and Char Minar. It wasn’t just natural landscapes or heritage properties, entries during the campaign reflected the pride that millennials are taking in a developing India and its changing infrastructure.
Gen Z and millennials from Kollam, Kullu, Wayanad, Ratnagiri, Jalgaon and Ahmednagar took on the stereotype that ‘India is polluted’.

 

With 23% of the entries under the category of ‘Food’, millennials challenged the stereotype that ‘India is just about curries’. They showcased delectable Mughlai dishes of Old Delhi, Tibetan food, sweets of Jharkhand, different kinds of Vada Pao, Fafada Jalebi, Tandoori Tea and many other Indian street food.

 

It wasn’t just Indian food, young video creators also attempted to break the stereotype that India doesn’t offer global cuisine with entries showcasing Lebanese shawarma to nitrogen ice-cream.

 

“Instagram is at the centre of visual communication, creativity, and storytelling and we thus partnered Samsung for their youth focused #IndiaReadyAction campaign that visually aims at breaking cultural stereotypes in India. From content workshops for people at the iconic Samsung Opera House to leveraging the power of creators who epitomize Instagram, the campaign crowd sourced content in a record manner and resulted in significant brand benefits. We’re glad to have partnered Samsung to tell their brand story in a unique way,” said Sandeep Bhushan, Director and Head of India GMS, Facebook.

 

Twenty one percent of the entries were on the theme of ‘Entertainment’, trying to break the stereotype that ‘entertainment in India revolves around Bollywood’. Videos on the theatre district of Mandi House in Delhi, throbbing nightlife, fusion and local rock bands, folk dance performances on Garba, Kalbelia etc. featured prominently. Many young Indians, especially in non-metro cities, also attempted to dispel the stereotype that ‘India is only about cricket’ with videos around badminton, football, table tennis, horseback riding, boxing, skating, lagori and kabaddi.

 

During the campaign, 31% of all videos came from women. Within the theme of ‘Culture’, the biggest stereotype women attempted to break was ‘Indian women wear only sarees’ and that they are only ‘homemakers’.

Samsung’s nationwide digital campaign #IndiaReadyAction kicked off recently urging people to break stereotypes about India by shooting short 60-second videos and sharing them on Instagram.

 

As a part of the campaign, Bangaloreans flocked the Samsung Opera House for a workshop on how to create short, impactful and creative videos organized by Samsung and Instagram. Celebrity chef Saransh Goila, was also present at the event and encouraged the audience to participate in the campaign.

Chef Saransh talked, not about cooking, but about the best ways to click and record food. He explained various styles of food photography and videography to create artistic videos to the captivated young audience.

 

 

 

“The evening was very interesting and I enjoyed learning how to create meaningful videos for Instagram,” said Ronith Mehra, a young participant. Attendees were taught how to use the camera and video editing features in Samsung smartphones in the best possible ways.

 

‘Real India through the eyes of millennials’ has been the driving motto for Samsung when the India Ready Action campaign was launched on May 9, 2019. It has now snowballed into a nationwide trend and Gen Z has flooded us with oodles of videos that aim to break stereotypes about India. Starting today, the month-long campaign #IndiaReadyAction will urge Gen Z and young millennials in India to share up to 60-second videos of their vision of Real India that will break any stereotypes that may exist about the country in the world.

 

A recent survey conducted by Samsung found several stereotypes about India exist in the minds of foreigners. To them, the Taj Mahal or river Ganga are the only major tourist attractions in the country, food means spice and curries and entertainment is only Bollywood and Cricket. There is little awareness of the other possibilities in Real India.

Our Gen Z and young millennials are a most vivacious, socially conscious lot, driven by a zest for India. Moreover, they are digital natives who live in the ‘Era of Live’ and video is fast becoming their medium of expression. #IndiaReadyAction is tailor made for them to express themselves,” Ranjivjit Singh, Chief Marketing Officer, Samsung India, said.

 

“Our recently launched Galaxy A series smartphones and Samsung Smart TVs enable people to move from an Era of Selfie to an Era of Live, where people foster more authentic and meaningful connections,” he added.

 

The campaign, which has been initiated through the launch of a campaign video , has been conceptualized by Samsung’s creative agency Cheil India.

 

 

 

 

While there has been an exponential growth in video consumption over the years, led by Gen Z and young millennials, this generation of Indians is also leading content creation. Priding themselves on spontaneity and creativity, these digital natives don’t just shoot stills, but create videos. They’re adding filters and experimenting with AR effects and are sharing their life stories through videos across multiple social platforms.

 

With #IndiaReadyAction, this generation will be empowered to showcase Real India through their unique videos.

 

Participants can share their view of Real India through short videos on themes such as food, places, entertainment and culture. Participants can shoot videos using any smartphone and post on their Instagram accounts tagging @SamsungIndia, using the hashtags #IndiaReadyAction, #City and #Theme.

 

The videos that participants post on Instagram will be populated on a map of India that is hosted on a Samsung India microsite (www.samsung.com/in/IndiaReadyAction). This will create a map of Real India, through the eyes of Gen Z and young millennials.

 

Every week, Samsung will announce 7 lucky participants who will get the latest Galaxy A70 smartphone that comes with a host of disruptive features, including a 32MP triple rear camera capable of shooting stunning super slow-mo videos, a massive 4500mAh battery with 25W super-fast charging capability and a 6.7 inch sAMOLED Infinity U display to give young consumers the freedom and convenience to share, stream and play all day long.

 

There’s more. At the end of the campaign, 20 of the most interesting videos will be rewarded with Galaxy A80 smartphones and Samsung 43 inch Smart TVs.

‘Glass: The Lion for Change’ at Cannes Lions 2018 celebrates culture-shifting creativity and recognizes work that implicitly or explicitly addresses issues of gender inequality or prejudice, through the conscious representation of gender in advertising.

 

Seema Nagar, the young girl from a small village near Jaipur, who defied odds to become a Samsung technician has become a household name. Samsung India’s campaign film caught public imagination and has been viewed 81 million times on YouTube, over 24 million of them women, the highest for any advertising video on YouTube in India.

 

 

 

The campaign, #SapneHueBade, is aimed at highlighting women empowerment. It showcases how Samsung cares for dreams of girls in India. The focus of the film is around the real life story of Ms Nagar, the trials and tribulations she goes through before entering Samsung Technical School and how it enables her to dream big.

 

After being trained at Samsung Technical School, Jaipur, she joined a Samsung Service Center in the same city. She also worked as a trainer in the same technical school where she studied.

 

Samsung Technical School, which is a part of Samsung’s citizenship initiative, was started in 2013 and aims to support the government’s vision to make India a global manufacturing hub by addressing the need for talented manpower with practical know-how and relevant industry experience. There are 22 such centres set up across India in collaboration with the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and Departments of Technical Education in different states such as Rajasthan, Kerala, Bihar, Delhi, West Bengal, Karnataka and Jharkhand.

 

Reinforcing its commitment to the government’s ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign, Samsung also announced the MSME-Samsung Technical School Scholarship program for girls and differently-abled trainees.

 

These schools have so far trained over 4,000 youth and made them job-ready across different technical trades. Around 70% of these students have got jobs, 45% of them with Samsung service centres. The initiative is part of Samsung’s ‘Make for India’ initiative and contributes to the government’s Skill India mission.

This Mother’s Day, Samsung has taken on a social experiment, through its new campaign #MomsLoveNonStop, speaking to three distinct mother-daughter duos to explore the unique relationship that exists between a mother and daughter.

 

 

 

 

The social campaign, conceptualised by Cheil, captures mothers’ unconditional love by exploring the nuances of the mother-daughter bond. Showcasing real life situations, the campaign encourages people to realise how mothers love them non-stop.

 

“With this new film, Samsung is celebrating the special bond between mothers and daughters. We wanted to reach out and acknowledge the unconditional love that mothers offer. Make your mother feel loved on Mother’s Day because she gives you love, non-stop,” said Mr. Ranjivjit Singh, Chief Marketing Officer, Samsung India.

 

 

 

 

“We take our mothers for granted not realizing their NON-STOP love. This mother’s day, we wanted to take our digital story of DC Refrigerator forward and encourage people to acknowledge that. The film is inspired by our daily lives and how our mothers always take care of us. It was easy to correlate to Samsung’s philosophy and present a simple idea emotionally! We hope more and more people love this campaign and appreciate their mother’s love,” said Aneesh Jaisinghani, Executive Creative Director, Cheil India.

 

Samsung had recently launched a digital campaign showcasing its new Digital Inverter Refrigerators through a heart-warming story of the bond between a mother and daughter. Through that story, we communicated how our new refrigerator line runs non-stop on the home inverter just like mothers who provide their love non-stop.
