The word “selfie” is said to have first appeared on an Australian internet forum in 2002. About a decade later, this term entered the worldwide vernacular. In November 2013, selfie received accolades as Word of the Year by the Oxford English Dictionary. According to the dictionary’s editors, the usage of the term selfie increased by 17,000% in just one year. The selfie stick even made Time Magazine’s Best 25 Inventions of the Year in 2014.
