To mark World Sleep Day 2026, a global study of Samsung Health users[2] is shedding new light on the true extent of the condition and the disruptive impact it has on your sleep. Aligned with this year’s World Sleep Day theme, “Sleep Well, Live Better,” Samsung is turning the invisible signs of sleep apnea into actionable insights through its Galaxy Watch series, helping those affected improve their sleep habits and overall health.

How Does Sleep Apnea Impact Your Sleep?

The report found that 23% of study participants are at risk of sleep apnea.

“The microarousals and awakenings that follow breathing pauses fragment your sleep,” explains behavioral sleep scientist Dr. Vanessa Hill. “Those occurrences can prevent the brain from staying in the REM and deep sleep stages necessary for cognitive and physical restoration.”

The report shows these constant disruptions take a direct toll on sleep duration and quality, leading to:

• Reduced REM Sleep: Participants with moderate to severe sleep apnea indicators detected by their Galaxy Watch got around four minutes less rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, the phase where our brains process emotions, consolidate memories and cement learning. Without enough of it, people can experience mood instability and memory problems, impacting performance at work and overall well-being.

• Less Deep Sleep: Sleep apnea also robs sufferers of deep sleep, approximately eight minutes less per night, on average. This is the body’s critical physical restoration phase, where growth hormone is released, muscles are repaired, and your immune system is activated. Losing out on deep sleep is why you may feel physically exhausted, have slower recovery times, and get sick more often.

• Frequent Nightly Awakenings: Study participants with signs of sleep apnea also woke up regularly during the night and stayed awake around four minutes longer. These interruptions derail the sleep cycle, locking you into lighter, less restorative stages and making next-day exhaustion inevitable, no matter how long you slept.

• Shorter Sleep Duration: Overall, people with a higher likelihood of sleep apnea averaged around 12 minutes less sleep. While this loss may seem minor, it can have a significant impact on overall sleep quality as your sleep cycle gets fragmented throughout the night.

Why It Matters: “Even a small loss in sleep duration is compounded by a larger loss of sleep quality,” said Dr. Hill. “This can be the difference between simply being ‘in bed’ and getting restorative rest, which could be why people feel so tired the next day.”

Dr. Hill also advocates a multidimensional approach to sleep health. “Sleep apnea affects many dimensions of sleep — duration, quality, sleep efficiency and even daytime fatigue,” she stated. “They together help determine our health and functioning.”

With sleep apnea shown to impact all aspects of sleep and lead to other health complications, detection is an essential first step in the fight against the condition.

How Does Galaxy Watch Help Detect Signs of Moderate to Severe Sleep Apnea?

• From Awareness to Action: By detecting signs of sleep apnea early, the feature provides the data needed for an informed consultation with a medical professional. In addition to tackling sleep apnea, your Galaxy Watch can help you build habits for better holistic sleep health. This growth follows the feature’s receipt of the Medical Device Registration Certificate from the Medical Device Authority in Malaysia. The certification affirms that Samsung meets the Medical Device Authority’s health, safety and environmental protection standards, reinforcing its leadership in sleep technology. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. held its 2025 Southeast Asia Tech Seminar in Bangkok, Thailand on June 20, unveiling its latest advancements in home appliances for the region. The seminar showcased how Samsung is bringing AI innovation to everyday living with smarter, more connected experiences across its appliance and mobile portfolio.

“We are continuously exploring new ways to enhance user convenience by creating seamless synergy across our products,” said Daren Tay, VP & Regional Head of Digital Appliances for Southeast Asia & Oceania, Samsung Electronics. “Through the Southeast Asia Tech Seminar, we aim to showcase the depth of our technological capabilities in detail and further strengthen the trust consumers place in our appliances.”

At the event, more than 40 journalists and influencers from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam personally experienced Samsung’s vision for 2025 and had an in-depth look at the design and technology in the featured appliances. The seminar was hosted at the Business Experience Studio, a space specially designed to offer business clients and visitors innovative and future-focused experiences through Samsung’s wide range of products and solutions.

Home Living Made Simple: Samsung’s “AI Home” Vision in Action

At the foundation of the showcase is Samsung’s commitment to making home living easier and more intuitive. This commitment is underscored by its “AI Home” vision, which focuses on the four key pillars of Ease, Save, Care, and Secure.

One of the centerpieces of this experience is the upgraded AI Home display[1] — a smart screen now available across more appliances, which enables users to seamlessly access functions, view personalized information on their Daily Board, and manage their home using Map View. The screen also connects third-party devices[2] via SmartThings, eliminating the need for a separate hub[3].

To enhance hands-free control experiences, the Bixby[4] voice assistant now includes Voice ID,[5] allowing the system to recognize individual users registered in advance, sync personal calendars[6] and even mirror Galaxy smartphone accessibility settings for better visibility. [7] Users can also access the benefits of new SmartThings services such as Family Care,[8] which offers peace of mind by alerting family members of inactivity or unusual patterns, while being secured by Samsung Knox.

Innovative Refrigeration Solutions

At the seminar, Samsung also showcased its new global refrigerator lineup, which brings to life the “Screens Everywhere” vision that was first unveiled at CES 2025. Notable features of the lineup include the debut of the 9-inch AI Home display and improved AI Family Hub experiences.

Another highlight was the introduction of the new Side-by-Side model which was recently launched for the Southeast Asian market. It features an integrated screen for enhanced usability, supports AI Energy Mode[9] through built-in Wi-Fi connectivity and includes Wide Auto Open Door, which allows users to open the door with just a light touch.

Smarter Laundry, Greater Efficiency

Samsung continues to lead in laundry solutions with AI-enhanced functionality that delivers higher levels of convenience and efficiency. In response to regional demands, Samsung is incorporating AI Wash [10]— previously exclusive to front-load washers — to the new Bespoke AI Top Load Washer for the first time. The top-load models also offer a range of other AI features, including AI Energy Mode and AI VRT+.

Additionally, the new Bespoke AI Washer and Dryer set offers the enhanced AI Wash+ and AI Dry+[11] features for smarter performance. Notably, they can recognize a wider range of fabric types than before, giving users a more personalized laundry experience[12]. The new Bespoke AI Laundry washer and dryer set also comes equipped with AI Home Screen that offer intuitive control and monitoring of essential information such as wash cycles and remaining detergent levels.

At the seminar, Samsung introduced the principles behind the AI features of its laundry lineup, particularly focusing on how its devices leverage AI to detect laundry and adjust the washing or drying cycle accordingly.

Diverse air conditioner solutions for smart living

Attendees at the seminar also learned about the new ‘Good Sleep’ mode, which allows users to connect their air conditioners with their Galaxy Watch series and Galaxy Ring, and enable automatic adjustment of the air conditioner from the wearable’s detection of their sleep stage.

The newly launched system air conditioner (SAC) lineup was also on display during the seminar, giving attendees the opportunity to discover more about Samsung’s intelligent climate solutions that offer seamless smart experiences with built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.

Powerful, Intelligent Vacuum Cleaners

Samsung is also introducing its most advanced vacuum products yet. The Bespoke AI Jet Ultra is the world’s most powerful cordless stick vacuum,[13] boasting up to 400W[14] of suction power and AI Cleaning Mode 2.0,[15] which can now detect corner[16] types and floor variations[17] – such as carpets, hard floors, mats – for smarter cleaning. Thinking Outside the Box: Opening a New Era of Smartwatch

Unveiled in September 2013, the revolutionary Galaxy Gear brought the Galaxy experience closer to everyday life. The wearable featured a 41.4-millimeter display that allowed users to make and receive calls, schedule events, set alarms and check the weather with their voice. Photos and short videos could be captured in the moment without smartphones, thanks to the 1.9-megapixel camera attached to the strap and the ingenious Memographer feature. More than a wristwatch, the Galaxy Gear set the stage for a new era of smartwatches.

Samsung launched the second-generation Samsung Gear2 in February 2014. Lighter and thinner than its predecessor, this device was equipped with a longer-lasting battery and packed with more features that could be used without a smartphone. Users could monitor their heart rate and track their exercise in real time with the heart rate sensor or turn the watch into a standalone music player with the embedded file storage. The Samsung Gear2 Neo was introduced at the same time, offering consumers an additional option with all the same features of the Samsung Gear2 except the camera.

In addition, American actress Sydney Sweeney from the TV series Euphoria made a cameo appearance during Galaxy Unpacked 2024 and stopped by the experience zone to get her hands on the latest Galaxy products. “The new colors of the Galaxy Z Flip6 are stunning,” she said.

Touching on health goals, Colleen revealed how the Samsung Health app has helped her in tracking and managing her nutrition intake. “With Samsung Health, I can record the calories or nutrition I have in every meal through my watch. This feature helps me to strictly monitor what I have eaten,” she said. “I think that the Nutrition Intake Monitoring makes it easier for people to track their meals without much hassle, especially for those who are extremely busy,” she added enthusiastically.

Having good sleep is crucial for health and well-being. Another favourite feature of Colleen’s, which surprises her at how beneficial it is, is the sleep tracking technology. Colleen dislikes sacrificing her beauty sleep and consistently strives to gain sufficient rest. “My sleep quality is everywhere at times due to the hours of sleep. I might be sleeping seven hours, but due to the previous day’s lack of sleep, it might affect my sleep cycle,” she shared.

Colleen added “The Galaxy Watch5’s Sleep Coaching Program tracks my sleep stages and matches them to a unique Sleep Animal. According to Samsung Health app, my sleep patterns[4] are identical to a Nervous Penguin, which indicates that I frequently have difficulty falling or staying asleep.
