Durability is a whole-device responsibility

A foldable has moving parts, a flexible display and a compact structure that must work together through repeated use. Its durability cannot be judged by any single component alone.

The hinge must continue to operate reliably. The display needs protection as it folds and unfolds. And the frame and internal structure must help the device withstand everyday handling, pressure, impacts and exposure to particles.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 undergoes more than 100 reliability validation tests designed to assess how the complete device performs under different stresses. This whole-device approach matters because the forces affecting one component can influence others.

Flex Titanium combines an ultra-thin titanium-alloy film with an enhanced titanium support plate around the folding display. Together, these innovations enable a display module that is 10% thinner, while improving flatness and helping maintain display stability over time.

The frame follows the same principle. Advanced Armor Aluminum² provides the rigidity and resistance to permanent deformation needed for everyday handling without adding unnecessary weight.

Foldable smartphones were often thought of as not much more than a niche category. That was years ago. This year, we are seeing a drastic change.

As more major technology brands enter the foldables scene, the sentiment should not be apprehension. In fact, for Samsung, which introduced its first Galaxy Fold in 2019, I see it is a sign that an idea we had early on is becoming increasingly relevant to the wider mobile industry.

This is good news, because as more brands enter a category, awareness grows. More people begin to understand what foldable technology is, what it can do, and perhaps most importantly, why they might want one.

The shift from “Does a phone fold?” to “Why do I need a foldable?”

The future of foldables should be about letting people decide for themselves why a foldable phone makes sense for the way they live.

For some, it may be about having a larger canvas such as the Galaxy Z Fold8’s 4:3 screen for watching, reading or gaming with the convenience of folding that canvas into a pocketable form factor. For others, it may be about productivity and multitasking on an all-in-one device like the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. It could also be the compactness of a flip phone like the Galaxy Z Flip8, or simply having a device that enables new ways to create content.

We are now witnessing a transition with foldables moving from something people noticed to something people actually consider for themselves.

From curiosity to consideration

Malaysia is a particularly interesting market in this regard.

The latest national data on information and communications technology shows that mobile phone usage among individuals reached 99.6% in 2025, while internet usage reached 98.3%¹. Malaysians are already deeply accustomed to using mobile technology across work, entertainment, communication and everyday life.

When virtually everyone is already carrying a smartphone, it creates an important opportunity for new form factors, and raises the question of whether a different kind of phone can meaningfully improve the way someone uses it.

We have seen this evolution in our own consumer market insights. Samsung’s 2024 post-launch research² across Southeast Asia and Oceania, including 300 Malaysian respondents, found strong purchase interest in the Galaxy Z series among younger consumers, particularly Millennials and Gen Z³, with foldables being associated with productivity, creativity and photography.

That is a great takeaway – people do not perceive foldables as technological curiosities anymore. They are beginning to really consider what foldables can do for their lives.

With more brands entering the category, that consideration will become even more common.

Competition raises the bar

Foldables make for an unusually complex engineering challenge. Making a screen fold is only the first step. The industry has to continually address durability, weight, hinges, software, displays and the fundamental question of how a changing form should change the experience. All this, while not forgetting to advance key features users value in any smartphone, regardless of its form factor, such as battery capacity and camera capabilities.

While Samsung has been spearheading foldable technology for several years, competition is exactly what I consider essential to push us to learn and improve with every generation of the Z series.

Our first Galaxy Fold weighed 276 grams. Galaxy Z Fold8 now weighs 201 grams, making it Samsung’s lightest fold yet⁴, and it also introduced a new form factor while advancing the display, hinge and internal architecture. With Galaxy Z Fold8, Fold8 Ultra and Flip8, we have also expanded the proposition beyond a single definition of what a foldable should be. One is designed around immersive discovery, another around maximum productivity and content creation, and another around compactness and self-expression.

That progress and the rationale behind the Galaxy Z series happened because consumers told us, directly and indirectly, what would make foldables more useful in everyday life.

The consumer will decide what comes next

This is where I believe competition truly ramps things up for the industry. As more consumers encounter different approaches to foldable design and how it fits their needs, they will become more informed. They will ask better questions.

Is a foldable useful? Does it help me work? Does it fit into my daily routine? Is it durable enough? Does its size and shape actually make a difference? These are some of the questions that will determine the category’s future.

We are already seeing signs of this shift in Malaysia and across our region. Less than a month after the latest Galaxy Z8 series was unveiled at Unpacked, the series recorded strong demand across Southeast Asia and Oceania, with Galaxy Z Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra pre-orders growing by approximately 60% compared with the previous generation. Samsung also saw an increase of more than 60% in switchers from other brands to the latest Fold generation.

These figures are encouraging, and I see them as evidence of a broader change in consumer behavior. We were once astounded by the advent of thin, touchscreen smartphones after a long era of tactile numeric keypads. With every big successful change, the world adapted to these inventions – every time, people embraced the new norm.

And now, people are again becoming more comfortable with the idea that a smartphone does not necessarily have to look the way it has looked for the past decade.

A bigger category creates a bigger responsibility

For Samsung, being the pioneer in foldables has never meant that we expect to be the only ones in the conversation. A thriving product category still needs different ideas, different approaches and different perspectives. When more companies challenge established assumptions, engineers have more problems to solve, designers have more possibilities to explore, developers have more reasons to rethink how software should work with hardware.

And in the end, consumers benefit.

After seven generations of Galaxy Z innovation, and now into our eighth generation, we have accumulated years of learning about what people value and what still needs to improve. We will continue to invest, listen, learn and innovate – not because competition has arrived, but because competition gives the entire industry a reason to push further.

It also makes our responsibility greater.

As part of “The People Behind the Galaxy Z Series’ Camera Innovations,” Samsung Newsroom sat down with experts from Samsung Research and the Mobile eXperience (MX) Business to discuss the technical challenges and collaboration behind the two features.

A sharply defined subject against a softly blurred background creates a sense of depth long associated with professional camera lenses. Researchers have continued to explore ways to achieve this effect in smartphone video.

With the Galaxy Z series, Portrait Video recreates the distinctive depth and Bokeh¹ of a large-aperture lens². To make this possible, Samsung Research analyzed the optical characteristics of actual camera lenses and developed AI-powered video processing technology, while the MX Business optimized it for the device.

Samsung Newsroom spoke with YoungGeol Kim of the Visual Technology Team at Samsung Research and Sang-uk Park, responsible for camera development at the Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, about how Portrait Video evolved from a research concept into a Galaxy camera feature.

A New Level of Depth in Portrait Video

Q. What is Portrait Video? What has changed with the latest Galaxy Z series?

Park: Portrait Video keeps the main subject in focus while softly blurring the background, creating a cinematic look that makes the subject stand out.

On the Galaxy Z series, the degree of blur changes naturally based on the distance between the subject and background. Small background lights appear as soft, rounded Bokeh, much as they would through a large-aperture lens. This allows users to draw attention to the subject and capture videos with greater depth and atmosphere using just a smartphone, without the need for separate professional equipment.

Users can also shift the focus to a different subject or adjust the blur level after filming.

Q. What inspired the technology behind Portrait Video?

Kim: Photography has been my hobby for 25 years. That passion led me to camera technology research and development and sparked a lasting interest in the unique visual character of lenses.

As smartphone cameras advanced rapidly, photography benefited from a range of new features and improvements in image quality. Video evolved quickly as well, but I saw further potential in recreating the depth and background rendering of professional camera lenses. We proposed the idea during the research stage, just as the MX Business was exploring ways to help users create professional-looking videos more easily — paving the way for joint development.

Q. How did the teams collaborate to turn Portrait Video into a camera feature?

Kim: Existing solutions alone weren’t enough to achieve the natural lens rendering we wanted. At the time, Samsung Research’s technology was still in the research stage, so applying it to a product was not an easy decision. Even so, the MX Business recognized its potential and decided to commercialize it.

From there, full-scale testing and refinement began. We evaluated the technology on actual devices and exchanged feedback, turning it into a camera feature for users.

Park: To prepare the feature for real-world use, we had to shoot countless videos under a wide range of conditions and validate the results. Since the feature is centered on people, experts from both teams even served as models and filmed one another. We focused particularly on how naturally subjects were separated from their backgrounds and whether the blur and Bokeh looked right at different distances.

As we filmed each other, reviewed the results together and continued our discussions, what I remember most is how noticeably the results improved.

Large-Aperture Lens Rendering on Smartphones

Q. What is the key technology that takes Portrait Video to the next level?

Kim: The key is technology that recreates the distinctive look of large-aperture professional camera lenses in smartphone video. We used AI and optical analysis to make this possible.

Simply blurring an image is not enough to reproduce the depth and natural background rendering of a professional camera. Conventional blur softens an image by blending surrounding colors, but a large-aperture lens works differently. The degree of blur changes naturally based on the distance between the subject and background, while bright points of light spread into Bokeh that retain their shape and brightness. The shapes and textures of these out-of-focus areas are known as bokeh.

This requires accounting for both subject-to-background distance and how light spreads through an actual camera lens.

Recreating this effect on a smartphone required two elements. First, we analyzed how light spreads through a real large-aperture lens and the resulting bokeh characteristics, then converted the results into data. We combined this with AI-estimated distance information for the scene, allowing the system to adjust the degree of blur and bokeh size based on the distance between the subject and background.

Q. What technical challenges did the teams face when creating blur and bokeh on smartphones?

Kim: The biggest challenge was naturally rendering complex boundaries between the subject and background, such as hair or eyeglass frames. On smartphones, AI-estimated distance information alone isn’t sufficient to accurately distinguish fine boundaries. Even a small error can blur strands of hair or leave parts of the background sharp, making the subject look unnaturally cut out.

To address this, we combined AI-estimated distance information with boundary information from the original footage, allowing for natural separation between the subject and background even around fine details such as hair.

Park: Maintaining consistent results across different shooting conditions — including weather, lighting, subject movement, and distance — was crucial. We repeatedly filmed under a wide range of conditions and reviewed the results, improving unnatural elements through software optimization and additional AI training data. Building on Samsung Research’s technology, image quality experts from the MX Business also evaluated the results from a user perspective, further refining the feature.

Q. What did it take to make this complex video processing reliable and ready for use on the Galaxy Z series?

Kim: The biggest hurdle was reducing power consumption and heat generation without compromising quality. Video is a rapid sequence of images, so processing 4K video in real time requires significant computation.

That meant we had to prioritize. We preserved the processing essential to image quality while reducing computation in areas where users were unlikely to notice a difference.

As a result, we struck a balance between natural lens rendering and real-time processing, ensuring stable, efficient performance even during extended recording.

More Freedom in Video Creation

Q. What are some tips to help users get the most out of Portrait Video?

Kim: To make bokeh stand out, look for scenes with bright light sources against a relatively dark background. Sunlight sparkling through leaves, Christmas lights, or streetlights at night can spread softly into circular Bokeh, creating a more atmospheric look.

When filming a person, it’s best to avoid strong light from the front. Instead, position the light source behind or to the side of the subject. This can softly illuminate the subject’s hair and contours while making the background Bokeh more prominent. Reflected light or ambient sources like streetlights can help keep the face from getting too dark for a more balanced result.

Q. What reaction would you most like to hear from people who have tried Portrait Video?

Park: I’d like users, creators, and video professionals to be surprised by how easy it is to create cinematic video on a smartphone. I hope the natural blur, Bokeh, and post-capture editing features give them greater freedom to achieve the look and feel they want.

Kim: Ultimately, I hope people feel they no longer need to carry a separate professional camera. We will continue advancing the underlying technologies so they can create cinematic videos with just a smartphone.

Samsung now offers three distinct foldable experiences: Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra for productivity, Galaxy Z Fold8 for immersive discovery and Galaxy Z Flip8 for expression and quick interaction. These distinctions show how the form factor can be designed around different lifestyles rather than forcing consumers into just one definition of a foldable.

5. Making hardware and software work as one

A phone that physically changes shape also needs software that can change with it. The experience has to flow naturally between screens, orientations and modes.

Samsung has increasingly designed the software experience around the physical flexibility of the devices, from Multi Window, AI-powered multitasking with Now Nudge³ and Gemini Notebook⁴ on the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, to a more capable FlexWindow on the Galaxy Z Flip8, where users can access apps, information and actions without unfolding.

6. Bringing AI into the foldable experience

The next stage of smartphone AI isn’t simply about generating an answer. It is about understanding what the user is doing and helping them move from information to action.

Agentic AI is integrated into the Galaxy Z8 experience, helping users move more naturally between information, apps and actions. On Samsung’s new foldable series, the expanded screens also create a natural canvas for AI-powered productivity, including Gemini Notebook, which can bring together information from different sources and help users organize and work with their thoughts and content in one place. 7. Removing the barriers to better experiences

Years of real-world use have shown that users prefer the least amount of hassle when it comes to using their devices. Adapting to a new device starts even before the first use, so switching devices itself needs to feel effortless.

The latest generation of the Galaxy Z series brings greater flexibility not just to how consumers use their devices, but how they move into the Galaxy ecosystem. With Smart Switch⁵, users can wirelessly transfer important data such as contacts, photos, messages, apps and settings from their previous devices, including from iOS.
