With the introduction of QLED TVs, Samsung has redefined the television landscape, integrating this innovative quantum dot technology into its products. By leveraging the properties of these ultra-fine quantum dots, QLED displays achieve a broader color gamut and higher brightness, elevating picture quality to levels that traditional LED TVs cannot match.

What sets Samsung QLED TVs apart from conventional LED TVs? Samsung Newsroom had the opportunity to meet with researchers Kevin Cha and Jang Nae-won from the Visual Display Business and disassemble a Samsung QLED TV to reveal the secrets behind its stunning performance — literally behind the screen.

1. Operating Module: The Brain of TV

1) Rear Cover

The back panel of a TV serves more than just a structural frame; it protects internal components and effectively manages heat. It houses speakers for audio support and facilitates easy device connections, improving the overall user experience.

2) Main PCB (Printed Circuit Board)

The main PCB acts as the brain of the TV, overseeing functions such as power supply, remote control reception and SmartThings connectivity. This critical component controls the entire system, ensuring the television operates smoothly.

3) TV Tuner

The TV tuner is responsible for receiving and converting broadcast signals for display on the screen. The rise of streaming services and increased use of external device connections has led many users to prefer smart monitors without tuners. However, by definition, a “television” must include this component.

4) AI Processor

At the heart of the Samsung QLED TV is the Q4 AI Processor chip. This advanced component manages AI functionalities such as picture and audio optimization and AI assistants. By automatically adjusting both image and sound based on the surrounding environment, the AI processor makes the viewing experience more immersive.

5) Speakers

Speakers are more than simple output devices. With high-resolution audio and a room-filling sense of space, Samsung QLED TV speakers greatly enhance the viewing experience.

2. Panel

1) Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Layer and Color Filter

The panel’s structure comprises several intriguing components. The liquid crystal layer and color filter are essential parts of the panel’s basic structure. The liquid crystal layer controls light passage, while the color filter separates colors and creates images at a pixel level. The PCB, which is attached to the panel, precisely controls each pixel, fine-tuning the image.

2) Optical Sheet

The optical sheet concentrates light from the backlight, ensuring a brighter and more uniform image across the display. By gathering light, it elevates the general brightness of the display.

3) QD (Quantum Dot) Layer

The next step reveals the QD layer — perhaps the most important core component of Samsung QLED TVs. The layer actually utilizes quantum dot materials to convert light sources. This ensures more precise and vibrant colors than conventional technologies, resulting in lifelike visuals. The QD materials in this layer are certified No-Cadmium, enabling safer quantum dot TVs that do not contain harmful substances.

4) Diffuser Plate

This diffuser plate scatters light emitted from the backlight and spreads it evenly across the panel to eliminate excessively bright spots and maintain natural illumination.

5) Blue LED Backlight

Samsung QLED TVs use a bright and efficient blue LED backlight. When paired with the QD layer, this backlight produces highly pure colors and achieves greater light efficiency than traditional white LEDs in standard LCD TVs, leading to enhanced overall luminance.

3. Three Key Requirements for a Real Quantum Dot TV

To qualify as a real quantum dot TV, three conditions must be met: the presence of a QD layer, sufficient quantum dot concentration and a blue backlight. Once a TV meets all three conditions, it can be considered a real quantum dot TV.

Samsung QLED TVs are the only models in the world to satisfy these criteria, earning the ‘Real Quantum Dot Display’ certification from TÜV Rheinland, a prominent international certification body based in Germany. This recognition underscores the excellence of Samsung’s QLED technology.

4. Striking Difference Between QLED and LCD

The differences between Samsung QLED and traditional LCD TVs are evident even to the naked eye but especially striking when measured with professional tools.

For Samsung QLED TVs, the wavelengths of red, green and blue colors exhibit narrow bandwidths and distinct peaks in their emission spectrum, resulting in meticulous color representation. Viewers can see natural visuals and exceptional picture quality with rich, deep colors.

In contrast, LCD TVs without QD layers display generally lower peaks, a wider bandwidth in green as well as multiple peaks in red, hindering accurate color reproduction. To compensate, these TVs often require multiple layers for color correction, ultimately reducing light efficiency.

The in-depth teardown reveals that Samsung QLED TVs are built with sophisticated technology that goes beyond basic explanations. Every component that manages light works in harmony, culminating in breathtaking image quality. The QD layer, in particular, significantly enhances the richness and vibrancy of colors. The intricate technology behind these displays makes a substantial difference in overall picture quality.

At IFA 2025, Samsung Electronics showcased its technological prowess by establishing a “Real QLED Zone,” promoting the concept of “Buy Real, Not Fake.” Samsung QLED TVs represent the pinnacle of cutting-edge technology, pushing the boundaries of premium viewing experiences. How small is a nanometer? If you can fathom just how small a nanometer is, then you might come close to being able to visualize just how Samsung engineers managed to pioneer a revolution in displays through cadmium-free quantum dot technology. Quantum dots are semiconductor particles that have transformed how we experience color and light on our TV screens.

In this conversation with Yohan Zondak, Head of Visual Display, Samsung Southeast Asia and Oceania, we take a closer look at the scientific breakthroughs, the challenges, as well as the future of this groundbreaking technology that has redefined what is possible for home entertainment.

Q:          Tell us more about Samsung’s journey to cadmium-free quantum dot technology.

A:           Quantum dot technology made waves in the beginning, thanks to the technology enabling superior color reproduction and contrast. However, the technology at the time required the use of cadmium composites. This was a grave issue as cadmium is one of ten substances that are strictly regulated under the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive, which intends to limit the amount of hazardous chemicals in electronics. Simply put, cadmium is a toxic material that is harmful to both human health and the environment.

We then asked ourselves this question: How might we achieve the exceptional color performance that quantum dots can bring, but without using cadmium altogether?  

This took some effort, but in 2014, we successfully patented our first cadmium-free quantum dot material using indium phosphide as a viable alternative in quantum dot displays that could deliver comparable performance as compared to cadmium composites.      

This breakthrough did take a significant amount of effort to realize, as indium phosphide composites is chemically less stable than cadmium composites. This required the innovation of specialized polymer materials for the quantum dot film, as well as new stabilization techniques to ensure that these cadmium-free quantum dots could withstand sufficient temperatures and light exposure without degradation.

Most significant was the overall environmental impact of this discovery. By removing cadmium from the picture for our QLED TVs, we managed to eliminate the potential use of a toxic substance from millions of homes, while still delivering the vivid colors and brightness consumers expect.

Q:          What should consumers look for in genuine quantum dot technology?

A:           In Samsung’s QLED TVs, quantum dots function as the core material that converts or emits light. This makes the quantum dots a necessary part of how the display works. However, as Samsung’s QLED technology has gained recognition for its superior picture quality, we’ve also observed the term “QLED” adopted as a marketing label across the industry and hope to help consumers gain a better understanding of what a genuine QLED TV should deliver.

There are three things that consumers should look out for in authentic quantum dot displays.

First is the total amount of quantum dot content—Samsung’s QLED TVs contain a large amount of actual quantum dot material, well above the minimum threshold to bring about meaningful color enhancement qualities in red and green.

Second is the presence of specialized quantum dot optical components, which separates the color-determining part from the LED backlight. This is what allows us to achieve both color accuracy and brightness levels of up to 2,000 nits in our displays. The quality of this quantum dot film also plays a key role in enabling rich color expressions as well as impacting both the performance and lifespan of the quantum dot TV.

Third, is the absence of cadmium. Samsung has invested significantly in developing safer quantum dot TVs without compromising visual performance. To date, we have secured around 150 patents for our cadmium-free quantum dot technology.  

Q:          What is Samsung’s approach to consumer trust and authenticity in its QLED offerings?

A:           Maintaining consumer trust begins with transparency. We have clearly defined what makes a genuine quantum dot display. In this case, a quantum dot display is one that uses quantum dots for photoconversion or photoemission as its core display technology. We want our customers to understand what they are buying.

To ensure authenticity, we look to rigorous third-party validation. For example, our cadmium-free quantum dot technology is certified by SGS, a global leader in testing and certification. We also adhere to Common Criteria certification that assesses the security integrity of IT products; our Knox security platform is integrated into our 2024 TV lineup, has received this certification for ten consecutive years.

In addition, when the Nature Nanotechnology scientific journal surveyed world-renowned experts about what they would consider a proper product based on nanotechnology back in 2019, the consensus pointed to quantum dot-enhanced displays. In summary, the same QLED TVs that Samsung have made.

We believe consumers deserve both exceptional performance and peace of mind. That is why we have invested in developing not just better displays, but safer ones too. By eliminating harmful substances like cadmium, as well as integrating advanced security through Samsung Knox, we demonstrate that premium performance does not have to come with compromises.

Q:          How is Samsung’s QLED technology evolving to meet new demands in home entertainment?

A:           The ongoing evolution of quantum dot technology for entertainment is due to its core strengths of precise color reproduction, high brightness, and remarkable energy efficiency. These factors are increasingly important as the content that we consume becomes more sophisticated.

One of the development pathways that we are looking at involves electroluminescent quantum dots, where the quantum dots themselves convert electrical energy directly into light, which has the potential to bring display technology to the nano-level.

Today, we are already integrating AI capabilities with our display technology to enhance the viewing experience. Samsung Vision AI enables your Samsung TV to deliver exceptional enhancements in picture and sound quality, for example. On-device AI picture and sound technologies analyze content and environmental factors in real-time, dynamically adjusting visuals and audio for an optimized experience.

At the end of the day, our goal is to make viewers feel like they are immersed in the content, rather than consuming it through a medium. With each evolution of our quantum dot technology and other displays, we get closer to this vision becoming reality.

This approach has been instrumental in enabling us to lead the global TV market for 19 consecutive years since 2006, with our QLED TVs commanding half of the market share in their category.

According to market research firm Omdia, Samsung achieved a 28.3% market share in the global TV market in 2024, maintaining the number one ranking it has held since 2006. This continued success is driven by the company’s commitment to premium and ultra-large screen innovation, as well as the introduction of cutting-edge, AI-powered TVs.

Dominance in the Premium and Ultra-Large TV Segments

Samsung solidified its leadership in the high-end TV market, particularly in the premium ($2,500+) and ultra-large (75-inch and above) segments:

• Premium ($2,500+) TVs – Samsung captured a 49.6% market share, accounting for nearly half of the global premium TV market.
• 75-inch and above – Samsung led the ultra-large category with a 28.7% market share.

QLED and OLED TV Success

Samsung also maintained its leadership in the QLED and OLED segments, reinforcing its dominance in the premium TV industry:

• QLED TVs – With 8.34 million units sold, Samsung commanded a 46.8% market share, further strengthening its leadership in this category. The global QLED market also saw significant growth, surpassing 10% of total TV sales for the first time.
• OLED TVs – Samsung’s OLED sales reached 1.44 million units in 2024, securing a 27.3% market share. This marks a year-over-year (YoY) increase of 42% and 4.6% in unit sales and market share, respectively, reflecting strong consumer demand for Samsung’s OLED innovations.

In addition, despite the advent of high-quality streaming, what does that mean for users who want to revisit old favorites that might come in lower resolution formats? Features like 8K AI Upscaling helps to upscale low-resolution content, further optimizing the user experience for large screen sizes. This means that you can still enjoy SD and HD content, upscaled to 8K quality, for maximum enjoyment.

Q: How are Samsung TVs elevating gaming experiences in 2024?

A: Ask any gamer out there, how much they like spending time adjusting settings for optimum performance. For TVs, it can be cumbersome to have to manually switch between different TV modes into the right one optimized for gaming. This is why we have features like AI Auto Game mode on our latest OLED TVs, which can automatically set the appropriate picture and sound settings depending on the game, using AI to intelligently identify the game genre.

For example, if you like playing football games, the TV automatically switches to Sports mode to help the grass color appear more natural. If you play first person shooter games a lot, AI Auto Game mode changes the TV mode to FPS mode, offering better visibility in-game with darker scenes. At the end of the day, users can spend more time gaming, and less on figuring out how to get things to work.

Q: How does a human-centered philosophy shape users’ experience of AI?

A: At Samsung, we believe that AI should go beyond the device to make a tangible and more personalized impact across all areas of your life.

One example is that our TVs automatically detect subtitles and convert them into spoken audio allowing more of us to enjoy the TV-watching experience. Market research firm Omdia reported that Samsung has achieved a 30.1% share of the global TV market in 2023, reinforcing its status as the industry leader since 2006. This success is largely due to the company’s strategic focus on premium and large-screen TV categories, driven by its cutting-edge QLED and OLED models.

Since its launch in 2017, Samsung’s QLED TV lineup, including the latest Neo QLED models, has surpassed cumulative sales of 40 million units. In 2023 alone, the QLED lineup achieved sales of 8.31 million units.

Samsung asserted notable leadership in the premium TV sector – specifically for TVs over 75 inches and priced above $2,500. The company has recorded an impressive 60.5% market share in terms of sales for TVs priced over $2,500, while also maintaining a lead with 33.9% sales share for TVs over 75 inches.
