When Samsung introduced its first foldable phone in 2019, it created a new category of mobile devices. Seven generations later, the foldable category has continued to evolve through engineering advances, design refinement, and a deeper understanding of how people use their mobile phones every day.

This two-part Q&A series with Carl Nordenberg, Vice President and Regional Head of Mobile eXperience Business, Samsung Southeast Asia & Oceania, explores how AI and new mobile form factors are reshaping the way people interact with technology. Part 1 focuses on what Samsung has learned from observing how consumers across Southeast Asia and Oceania use their mobile devices.

Samsung’s foldable journey reflects a simple but important idea: new form factors matter most when they address real consumer behavior and fit into everyday life.

Q: What type of users in Southeast Asia and Oceania is Samsung trying to reach with its foldable devices, especially with the new form factor?

Carl Nordenberg: Samsung has led and defined the foldable category for seven generations. Over that time, we’ve developed a much deeper understanding of what people enjoy doing most on their foldable devices.

Southeast Asia and Oceania is a highly mobile-first region. We have seen our foldables users spending a significant amount of time on social media, video streaming, and gaming – alongside productivity and increasingly AI-driven experiences.

That is why our latest foldable lineup is designed around distinct user needs. The Galaxy Z Fold8, with its 4:3 main display, provides a more immersive experience for entertainment, reading, and media consumption. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra with its large 8-inch main display, is designed for people who want to get more done through multi-tasking and enhanced productivity. And for people who prioritize portability, design, and self-expression, the sleek Galaxy Z Flip8 is the ideal choice.

There isn’t one ideal form factor for every consumer. Our objective is to give people a choice based on how they want to use their device.

And as AI adoption accelerates across our region, these different form factors also create new possibilities for further enhancing the AI experience – across productivity, and creativity.

Q: How has the durability of foldables from Samsung been improved?

Carl Nordenberg: Durability has been one of the areas where we have learned the most over seven generations of Foldables leadership.

One exciting advancement in our new Galaxy Z series is the introduction of Flex Titanium technology. Our redesigned display structure utilizes structural and material advancements to deliver more refined product experiences – while also enhancing durability and reducing crease visibility.

But engineering improvements are only meaningful if they stand up to everyday use. To ensure that the new Galaxy Z series is built for real-world conditions, Samsung conducted more than 100 reliability validation tests, including drops, repeated folding, pressure, moisture and debris.

This allowed us to better understand how the devices would perform under different conditions and identify potential issues.  We strive to continuously improve our foldables with each generation so that consumers have the confidence to pick the foldable that best fits them. Our priority is to preserve the unique advantages of the foldable form factor, by delivering larger and more immersive displays, as well as lighter and thinner devices without compromising durability and performance.

Q: How are Galaxy AI features optimized for each of the different form factors?

Carl Nordenberg: This is where foldables become particularly interesting. AI should not simply be the same experience placed onto a different-sized screen. The foldable form factor can give users more ways to interact with AI and what they are able to do with it. And with One UI 9, we’ve refined those interactions for each device.

On the Z Fold8 Ultra, the larger screen and split-view functionality make it particularly powerful for productivity and multi-tasking. For example, users can access Now Nudge and keep Automation progress visible while other content stays on-screen at the same time.

On the Z Fold8, One UI 9 takes advantage of both its unique 10:16 cover screen and 4:3 main display, giving users different ways to consume, create, and interact with content, depending on if their device is open or folded.

And on the Z Flip8, AI experiences like Now Brief can be accessed directly from FlexWindow, so users can get useful and timely information without even opening their phone.

The important point is that we are designing each form factor around different priorities and use cases, to bring the best AI experiences to Galaxy foldable users.

Q: How can the new Galaxy Z8 Series help a workforce be more productive at work?

Carl Nordenberg: Our existing Z Fold devices have already shown us how valuable a larger mobile display can be for productivity.

For some users, a device such as the Z Fold 8 Ultra can also potentially allow businesses to consolidate what they previously did across both a mobile phone and a tablet. They can communicate, review documents, work across multiple applications and access more information at once, while still carrying a device that fits easily in their hand.

The new form factor also creates opportunities for businesses with highly mobile workforces. Think about a sales representative, a field-service employee or someone who spends much of the day moving between locations. They may need more screen space to review information, demonstrate content or complete tasks, but they do not necessarily want to carry several devices.

That combination of portability and a larger workspace is one of the most compelling productivity benefits of the foldable form factor.

Q: Consumers today could say “I am interested in a foldable device but haven’t yet made the switch”. What’s the biggest reason one should?

Carl Nordenberg: Foldables have come a long way over the past seven generations.

When we first launched the category, foldables were often seen as something primarily for tech enthusiasts and early adopters. But with each generation, we have made the devices, thinner, lighter, more durable, more powerful, and more distinctively useful in everyday life.

One of the most encouraging things we see in growing the foldables category, is that once consumers actually experience a foldable phone, they’re much more open to the category. In fact, the Fold7 and Flip7 achieved an almost 40% repurchase rate in Southeast Asia and Oceania, showing that once consumers adopt foldables, many choose to stay with the category.

We’re also seeing that momentum continue with this generation. Our new Galaxy Z8 series has been enthusiastically embraced by consumers in the region, with pre-orders for foldables in Southeast Asia and Oceania achieving a record-high with the new launch. Additionally, pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra devices were almost 60% higher compared to the Galaxy Z Fold7.

I think this progress reflects our focus and commitment to making foldables a mainstream category. We’ve delivered meaningful improvements with every generation and we will continue to refine the portfolio based on user needs. We want the form factor to fit naturally into how people already live, work, create, and communicate – while giving them more possibilities

From Form Factor to Fit

Samsung’s foldable journey shows that innovation is not only about changing the shape of a device. It is about understanding what that different shape enables people to do.

Seven generations of consumer insight have helped Samsung evolve our foldables portfolio to meet diverse needs, from productivity and entertainment to portability and creativity.

For Samsung, the lesson is clear: the best mobile experiences are not defined by specifications or form factor alone. They are shaped by people – their habits, their priorities, and the different ways they use their mobile phones throughout the day.

Across Southeast Asia and Oceania, consumers are using AI to communicate, create content, find information, improve productivity, and manage daily tasks. As these experiences are increasingly supported by the devices and services people already use, the conversation is moving beyond individual features. People are starting to ask how AI can become more useful, more accessible, and more seamless in daily life.

This is the second article in a two-part Q&A series with Carl Nordenberg, Vice President and Regional Head of mobile eXperience Business, Samsung Southeast Asia & Oceania. In part 2, he discusses the rapidly evolving AI landscape and why Samsung believes the future will be defined by choice, openness, and experiences built around users’ needs.

Q: With multiple AI systems available, how should users know which AI they should use?

Carl Nordenberg: There isn’t one “correct” AI model. It depends on the user, the situation, and the task at hand.

Our goal is to provide the best AI experience possible. Different AI models have different strengths and since we launched Galaxy S26 earlier this year, we’ve offered users a variety of trusted AI agents to rely on. For example, users might activate Bixby as a conversational device agent, and choose an alternative agent for search and discovery.

Instead of only relying on one AI agent, we are focused on enabling multiple agents to work seamlessly across apps, services, and features, so that users can enjoy more natural and personalized experiences.

 Q: What is Samsung’s long-term vision for Galaxy AI?

Carl Nordenberg: Our strategy is to remain open to collaborating with companies that can provide the best AI experiences for our customers, while also developing our own AI technologies and solutions.

One important area of focus for Samsung is localization. Regions like Southeast Asia and Oceania are incredibly diverse and we are committed to expanding language support and providing enhanced AI experiences that are genuinely useful in local contexts.

The AI landscape will continue to evolve, which is why we’re building Galaxy AI as a platform. Ultimately, the vision for Galaxy AI is to integrate the right capabilities – both from Samsung and our partners – to deliver seamless and differentiated experiences to our users. Starting with the Galaxy Z8 series, we’re moving beyond just adding AI features on top of the OS but building deeper system-level foundation with the engines, policies and intelligence needed for agents, apps and services to work together.

Q: Five years from now, what do you hope consumers think of when they hear “Galaxy AI”?

Carl Nordenberg: Five years from now, we’d like consumers to associate Galaxy AI with the best AI experience available, not just on mobile phones, but across the broader Samsung ecosystem.

Samsung has an advantage with our ecosystem where users can interact with AI across multiple different touchpoints. From mobile phones and watches, to tablets, televisions, and other smart home appliances, each device captures different signals about who the user is and what they need.

For example, your phone may recognize events in your calendar, and know when you have a busy schedule, while your watch understands your sleep and activity patterns. Working together with other connected devices, AI can surface the right information at the right times to help you manage your day more easily.

Q: What will the next phase of mobile AI look like for consumers?

Carl Nordenberg: I don’t think the next phase of mobile AI will be defined by one assistant, one model or one breakthrough feature. It will be defined by how naturally AI fits into everyday life. For Samsung, that means staying open, working with the best partners and giving users choice, while keeping the user experience simple. Different AI systems will continue to have different strengths. The value comes from making those strengths available in ways that feel seamless, useful, and relevant for each individual.

That is particularly important in Southeast Asia and Oceania, where people use mobile technology across so many parts of their lives, from work and communication to entertainment and creativity.

The future of AI will depend not only on what the technology can do, but on how naturally it supports what people already want to do.

In that sense, the most meaningful AI may be the one you notice the least: it understands your context, helps at the right moment, and makes your everyday tasks easier.

Smart Switch is Samsung’s data transfer app^[1] that allows users to move contacts, photos, videos, messages, apps, settings and more from an Android or iOS device to a new Galaxy device. With One UI 9 on the new eighth-generation Galaxy Z series, Smart Switch makes switching devices easier and more seamless than before. Quick Share has also been enhanced, making it easier to share files with friends, family and colleagues using different platforms.

Start Switching With Just a QR Code

With One UI 9, users no longer need to install the Smart Switch app separately on their iOS device. By simply scanning the QR code displayed on their new Galaxy, they can start transferring data through Smart Switch.

The updated Smart Switch also makes it easier to connect wirelessly. The two devices can connect without users needing to find the right cable or adapter before getting their new phone set up.

Bring More of Your Phone With You

With One UI 9, Smart Switch has expanded the types of data that can move from iOS devices to Galaxy. In addition to previously supported data such as photos, messages, contacts, calendars and apps, users can also transfer passwords and passkeys, call history, accessibility settings and eSIM information.

These may be less visible than a photo library, but they can make a big difference to how quickly a new device feels ready to use. A saved password means one less account to set up again. Bringing over accessibility settings can reduce the need to recreate a personalized experience. eSIM information can also be transferred, making it easier to continue using an existing mobile setup.

Make Galaxy Feel More Familiar

Whether switching to Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Z Fold8 or Z Flip8, users can make their new device feel familiar from the start. Beyond transferring data, they can adjust key settings such as Swipe gestures and Home screen layout to suit the way they use their phone. With the UI customization app Good Lock, users can also personalize the Home screen, app switching and more, giving them greater freedom to use Galaxy in the way that works best for them.

For those switching from iOS to Galaxy, these options can help recreate familiar ways of navigating and organizing their previous smartphone, reducing the adjustment that can come with moving to a new environment. This helps users settle into their new Galaxy more comfortably and naturally from the start.

Keep Sharing After the Switch

Changing smartphones does not mean everyone around a user changes theirs too.

Friends, family and colleagues may continue using different devices, which makes cross-platform sharing an important part of the experience long after setup is finished. Devices running One UI 9 and One UI 8.5 can benefit from an enhanced cross-device sharing experience^[2] with Quick Share. With AirDrop compatibility, Quick Share makes it easier to share files between Galaxy and iOS devices.

Choosing a new smartphone should come down to the experience people want next. By simplifying how the switch begins, expanding what can move across and making it easier to keep sharing afterward, Samsung is reducing more of the practical barriers between smartphone ecosystems.

The result is a simpler way to move to Galaxy, while bringing more of what already matters along for the journey.

In Singapore, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra | Fold8 | Flip8 and Galaxy Watch9 | Watch Ultra2 are now available through local telcos, major consumer electronics and IT stores, Samsung Online Store, Samsung Official Stores on select platforms, and Samsung Experience Stores.

The latest Galaxy Z Fold Series has seen strong early demands in Southeast Asia and Oceania, with pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Z Fold8 Ultra having increased by almost 60% in the region, compared to the Galaxy Z Fold7.

Graphite was the most popular colour overall for Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold8, while Pink led pre-orders for Galaxy Z Flip8. Among Samsung.com pre-order customers aged 15 to 34, online exclusive colours Green Shadow, Pistachio and Mint emerged as the top choices for Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8 and Flip8, respectively.

The New Galaxy Z Series: Three Distinct Foldable Experiences

Built on seven generations of foldable innovation and consumer insight, the new Galaxy Z Series gives users more choice than ever, with three distinct experiences engineered to fit different needs.

Galaxy Z Fold8 introduces a fresh form factor built around the way people explore, discover and immerse themselves in their favourite content. Its display ratios are designed to move naturally with users throughout the day – from quick interactions like messaging, browsing and short-form video on the wider cover screen to more immersive viewing, reading and gaming on the 4:3 main display.

At just 201 g, it is Samsung’s lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet, while Samsung’s new Flex Titanium technology helps support a slimmer display structure with lasting durability and reduced crease visibility over time.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra brings Galaxy’s renowned Ultra standard to foldables, combining a larger workspace with an upgraded camera system and performance built for demanding creative workflows. Its expansive 8-inch main display opens up more room for multitasking, while Now Nudge^[1] helps users move from conversation to action by suggesting relevant next steps across supported apps.

The 200 MP main camera now supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) for richer detail, colour and clarity. A new 50 MP ultra-wide camera adds greater flexibility for wider scenes and macro shots, helping users capture more from one device.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra also features a 5,000 mAh battery^[2], 45 W fast charging and an expanded graphite cooling structure – all in Galaxy’s slimmest Z Fold design yet, measuring just 4.1 mm when unfolded and weighing 215 g.

Galaxy Z Flip8, Samsung’s sleekest Flip ever released, is built for expression and quick interaction on the go. Its reimagined FlexWindow brings apps, insights, actions and assistance directly to the cover screen. Now Brief^[3] surfaces personalised information based on users’ schedules, routines and interests. Users can also access Gemini from the FlexWindow through side-key activation or natural voice requests, making it easier to complete connected actions on the go.

Galaxy Z Flip8 further enhances Samsung’s signature Flip camera experience with a 50 MP camera, ProVisual Engine and FlexCam experiences that make it easier to capture, preview and share polished photos and videos from flexible angles.

Across Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8, Dual Recording captures both the action and the user’s reaction, while My FanCam^[4] automatically tracks and reframes a selected subject.

Galaxy Watch Ultra2 | Watch9: Effortless Health Management From the Wrist

Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and Galaxy Watch9 extend the Galaxy experience to the wrist, helping users turn daily activities into more meaningful, actionable guidance. Both devices are powered by the Snapdragon Wear® Elite Platform and are designed to support continuous health tracking with improved performance, comfort and battery life.

Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is built for outdoor adventures and high-performance users who need long-lasting endurance, reliable durability and precise tracking. Available in a 47 mm size, it features an 800 mAh^[5] battery, a display with up to 5,000 nits of brightness, shock-resistant titanium casing and dedicated tracking modes for outdoor sports, including Trail Run^[6]. It is also rated IP69K and 10 ATM and certified to EN 13319^[7].

Galaxy Watch9 is designed as an everyday health companion for wellness-conscious users who want to build healthier habits through continuous activity and sleep tracking. Available in 40 mm and 44 mm sizes, the Galaxy Watch9 features a lightweight aluminium casing, a comfortable design for 24/7 wear, a display with up to 3,000 nits of brightness and health features such as Vitals^[8], Heart Health Score^[9], Daily Cardio Load^[10] Fitness Index^[11], and Hearing.

Together with the new Galaxy Z Series, Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and Galaxy Watch9 expand Samsung’s AI ecosystem, bringing connected companion experiences across phone and wrist.

Availability 

The latest Galaxy Z Series will be generally available in Singapore starting today, 14 August 2026. The Galaxy Z Series are available in a range of colours, including Violet Shadow for Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra; Lavender for Galaxy Fold8, and Pink for Galaxy Flip8, along with other colour options — with online exclusive colours available exclusively on Samsung.com.

Customers purchasing a new Galaxy Z Series device will receive a six-month trial of Google AI Pro, including 5 TB of cloud storage, valued at US$119.94. With expanded access to Google’s AI models, users can enhance productivity and creativity on their foldable devices.^[12]

Switching to Galaxy is now easier than ever, thanks to a more seamless migration experience across a wider range of devices. With the updated Smart Switch, iOS users can scan a QR code on their current device and wirelessly transfer data without downloading an additional app. Smart Switch can also transfer more types of data, including passwords and passkeys, call history, accessibility settings and eSIM information, helping reduce the time needed to set up a new device. With new compatibility between Quick Share and AirDrop, users can also share files seamlessly between iOS and Galaxy devices in both directions.^[13]

The Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and Watch9 will also be generally available in Singapore starting 14 August 2026. The Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is available in 47 mm, while the Galaxy Watch9 is offered in 40 mm and 44 mm. Colour, size, connectivity option, model, and availability may vary.

Consumers who purchase the latest Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and Watch9 can access exclusive subscription trial benefits, including a 60-day Strava trial valued at US$23.98 and a two-month iFIT trial valued at US$19.98^[14]. Together, these benefits help users track workouts from the wrist and extend their fitness experiences through partner apps. Terms, eligibility and availability may vary by market.

To hear how those insights guided the engineering behind Samsung’s latest foldables, Samsung Newsroom sat down with Sunghoon Moon, Executive Vice President and Senior Executive of Mobile R&D Office – Hardware, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics.

 Q. How have seven generations of user insights shaped Samsung’s approach to the latest Galaxy Z Series?

From the beginning, we saw foldables as an opportunity to redefine how people interact with their smartphones — not simply as a new form factor. Through seven generations, we’ve learned how people open, carry, unfold and rely on their devices. Those insights have shaped our engineering priorities and guided each new generation of the Galaxy Z Series.

Over time, three priorities became clear: larger, more immersive displays; thinner and lighter devices without compromising durability; and ultra performance while preserving the unique advantages of the foldable form factor. Delivering all three became the defining engineering challenge behind the latest Galaxy Z Series.

Q. Samsung describes foldable innovation as engineering one connected system. What does that mean in practice?

With foldables, every component is interconnected. Making a device thinner, for example, means redesigning the display, hinge, battery, thermal system and internal architecture together. Rather than optimising individual parts separately, we engineer the entire device as one connected system. This end-to-end engineering philosophy extends from materials and component design to manufacturing, validation and the final product experience — allowing engineering advancements to become improvements people experience every day.

Samsung engineered each of the latest foldables as one connected system to bring about key improvements for users.

Q. The new Galaxy Z Series introduces Flex Titanium technology. What engineering challenges did it solve? 

Our goal was to make foldables thinner and lighter without compromising durability or the viewing experience. That required us to rework the display support structure protecting the ultra-thin OLED panel while preserving the flexibility needed for repeated folding.

Used in demanding industries such as aerospace, titanium offered the strength and resistance against permanent deformation essential for a foldable display. But selecting the material was only the beginning. The real challenge was developing the processing, structural design and manufacturing expertise needed to make titanium suitable for repeated folding.

Flex Titanium technology makes the display thinner and more durable while reducing crease visibility.

Flex Titanium combines two titanium-based elements. The titanium plate beneath the display serves as the primary structural support, helping absorb pressure and impacts from both the front and rear of the device. A precision-engineered lattice structure — created through a hybrid manufacturing process — allows the plate to remain flexible while maintaining structural strength. Beneath the display panel, the titanium-alloy film provides the strength, flexibility and elastic recovery needed to support repeated everyday folding, even at a thickness of just tens of micrometres — roughly one-third the thickness of a human hair.

Flex Titanium technology features an exceptionally thin titanium-alloy film and precision-engineered titanium plate.

Together, these innovations strengthened the display support structure while reducing display module thickness by 10%, creating additional space for the battery, thermal system and camera. For users, that translates into a thinner, lighter device with a flatter display and reduced crease visibility.

Q. How did Samsung reinvent the battery system for the latest Galaxy Z Series?

 Users expect longer battery life, faster charging and a thinner foldable — without compromising safety, stability or long-term reliability. Meeting those expectations required reengineering the battery system, not simply increasing battery capacity.

We introduced a silicon-carbon anode to improve energy density, but the innovation extends beyond the anode. Because silicon-carbon materials are more reactive, maintaining long-term stability under high-voltage conditions meant optimising the entire battery system. Improvements to the display structure also created additional internal space, allowing us to redesign the battery system while preserving a slimmer form factor. As a result, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra features a 5,000 mAh battery.

The same philosophy shaped charging. Rather than applying a single solution across the line-up, we developed charging architectures tailored to each foldable form factor. Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold8 use a dual-path charging architecture that helps distribute power more efficiently across the battery system, enabling faster, more stable and reliable charging while improving heat management. This supports 45 W fast charging, enabling Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra to reach a 67% charge in 30 minutes. For Galaxy Z Flip8, the charging architecture was separately optimised for the unique spatial and thermal requirements of its compact form factor.

Q. To ensure foldables can withstand years of everyday use, how does Samsung validate durability before bringing a device to market?

For us, durability isn’t just about design — it must be proven through testing. We validated the complete foldable system under conditions that reflect how people use their devices. The latest Galaxy Z Series was subjected to more than 100 reliability validation tests covering real-world conditions including drops, repeated folding, pressure, moisture and debris. Our goal was to understand how the complete device performs in everyday use, identify potential issues before they reach customers and build foldables people can trust.

Q. Looking back at the entire development process, how would you describe Samsung’s approach behind the Galaxy Z Series?

Everything starts with the user. Over seven generations, we’ve transformed user insights into innovations in materials, components and the overall device experience. That philosophy continues to guide the Galaxy Z Series — delivering foldables that are thinner, more durable, more capable and more intuitive year after year.
