How small is a nanometer? If you can fathom just how small a nanometer is, then you might come close to being able to visualise how Samsung engineers have managed to pioneer a revolution in displays through cadmium-free quantum dot technology.

Quantum dots are semiconductor particles that have transformed how we experience color and light on our TV screens, and over the years, Samsung has paved the way for commercialisation to bring quantum dot technology to the forefront of its TV range. This includes the brand’s QLED and OLED range, which delivers the highest level of colour accuracy and brightness.

If you own a Samsung QLED or OLED TV, you might already have experienced a better, brighter visual experience. Powered by quantum dot technology, Samsung’s premium range of TVs are great for gamers, sports fans, and entertainment aficionados who love an immersive viewing experience of their favourite content.

The journey toward the democratisation of quantum dot TVs has come with a remarkable challenge: not only to offer high-quality experience to consumers, but also to ensure user safety. In this conversation with Yohan Zondak, Head of Visual Display, Samsung Southeast Asia and Oceania, we take a closer look at the scientific breakthroughs, the challenges, as well as the future of this groundbreaking technology that has redefined what is possible for home entertainment.

Q:         Tell us more about Samsung’s journey to cadmium-free quantum dot technology.

A:         Quantum dot technology made waves in the beginning, thanks to the technology enabling superior colour reproduction and contrast. However, the technology at the time required the use of cadmium composites. This was a grave issue as cadmium is one of ten substances that are strictly regulated under the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive, which intends to limit the amount of hazardous chemicals in electronics. Simply put, cadmium is a toxic material that is harmful to both human health and the environment.

We then asked ourselves this question: How might we achieve the exceptional colour performance that quantum dots can bring, but without using cadmium altogether?

This took some effort, but in 2014, we successfully patented the world’s first cadmium-free quantum dot material using indium phosphide as a viable alternative in quantum dot displays that could deliver comparable performance as compared to cadmium composites.

This breakthrough did take a significant amount of effort to realise, as indium phosphide composites is chemically less stable than cadmium composites. This required the innovation of specialised polymer materials for the quantum dot film, as well as new stabilisation techniques to ensure that these cadmium-free quantum dots could withstand sufficient temperatures and light exposure without degradation.

Most significant was the overall environmental impact of this discovery. By removing cadmium from the picture for our QLED TVs, we managed to eliminate the potential use of a toxic substance from millions of homes, while still delivering the vivid colours and brightness consumers expect.

Q:         What should consumers look for in genuine quantum dot technology?

A:         In Samsung’s QLED TVs, quantum dots function as the core material that converts or emits light. This makes the quantum dots a necessary part of how the display works. However, as Samsung’s QLED technology has gained recognition for its superior picture quality, we’ve also observed the term “QLED” adopted as a marketing label across the industry and hope to help consumers gain a better understanding of what a genuine QLED TV should deliver.

There are three things that consumers should look out for in authentic quantum dot displays.

First is the total amount of quantum dot content—Samsung’s QLED TVs contain a large amount of actual quantum dot material, well above the minimum threshold to bring about meaningful colour enhancement qualities in red and green.

Second is the presence of specialised quantum dot optical components, which separate the colour-determining part from the LED backlight. This is what allows us to achieve both colour accuracy and brightness levels of up to 2,000 nits in our displays. The quality of this quantum dot film also plays a key role in enabling rich colour expressions as well as impacting both the performance and lifespan of the quantum dot TV.

Third, is the absence of cadmium. Samsung has invested significantly in developing safer quantum dot TVs without compromising visual performance. To date, we have secured around 150 patents for our cadmium-free quantum dot technology.

Q:         What is Samsung’s approach to consumer trust and authenticity in its QLED offerings?

A:         Maintaining consumer trust begins with transparency. We have clearly defined what makes a genuine quantum dot display. In this case, a quantum dot display is one that uses quantum dots for photoconversion or photoemission as its core display technology. We want our customers to understand what they are buying.

To ensure authenticity, we look to rigorous third-party validation. For example, our cadmium-free quantum dot technology is certified by SGS, a global leader in testing and certification. We also adhere to Common Criteria certification that assesses the security integrity of IT products; our Knox security platform is integrated into our 2024 TV lineup, has received this certification for ten consecutive years.

In addition, when the Nature Nanotechnology scientific journal surveyed world-renowned experts about what they would consider a proper product based on nanotechnology back in 2019, the consensus pointed to quantum dot-enhanced displays. In summary, the same QLED TVs that Samsung have made.

We believe consumers deserve both exceptional performance and peace of mind. That is why we have invested in developing not just better displays, but safer ones too. By eliminating harmful substances like cadmium, as well as integrating advanced security through Samsung Knox, we demonstrate that premium performance does not have to come with compromises.

Q:         How is Samsung’s QLED technology evolving to meet new demands in home entertainment?

A:         The ongoing evolution of quantum dot technology for entertainment is due to its core strengths of precise colour reproduction, high brightness, and remarkable energy efficiency. These factors are increasingly important as the content that we consume becomes more sophisticated.

One of the development pathways that we are looking at involves electroluminescent quantum dots, where the quantum dots themselves convert electrical energy directly into light, which has the potential to bring display technology to the nano-level.

Today, we are already integrating AI capabilities with our display technology to enhance the viewing experience. Samsung Vision AI enables your Samsung TV to deliver exceptional enhancements in picture and sound quality, for example. On-device AI picture and sound technologies analyse content and environmental factors in real-time, dynamically adjusting visuals and audio for an optimised experience.

At the end of the day, our goal is to make viewers feel like they are immersed in the content, rather than consuming it through a medium. With each evolution of our quantum dot technology and other displays, we get closer to this vision becoming reality.

This approach has been instrumental in enabling us to lead the global TV market for 19 consecutive years since 2006, with our QLED TVs commanding half of the market share in their category. 

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced that approximately 80 models in its 2025 TV, monitor and soundbar lineups have received Product Carbon Reduction^[1] and Product Carbon Footprint^[2] certifications from TÜV Rheinland, a globally recognised certification organisation based in Germany. This marks the fifth consecutive year that the premium lineups, Neo QLED 8K and Neo QLED, have received such certifications, reinforcing the company’s continued efforts in carbon reduction.

In addition, the company is also working towards obtaining certification for its Color E-Paper lineup later this year.

The certifications from TÜV Rheinland are awarded following a rigorous evaluation of a product’s entire lifecycle — including manufacturing, transportation, usage and disposal — based on internationally recognised sustainability standards. These certifications highlight Samsung’s efforts to reduce environmental impact across its product lineup.

In particular, the Product Carbon Reduction certification is granted to products that have already received Product Carbon Footprint certification and further demonstrate a measurable reduction in carbon emissions compared to their predecessors.

Samsung’s leadership in energy-efficient display technology dates back to 2021, when the Neo QLED became the first 4K and higher-resolution TV to earn the Reducing CO₂ certification. Since then, Samsung Electronics has continually expanded its portfolio of environmentally certified products, including QLED, Crystal UHD, Lifestyle TVs, OLED TVs and a wide range of monitors and digital signage products.

Company maintains leadership in overall global gaming monitor market for fifth consecutive year, based on total revenue

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a global leader in the display industry, has secured the top position in global sales of OLED monitors just one year after launching its first OLED model —  the 34″ Odyssey OLED G8 (G85SB model), a gaming monitor.

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), Samsung Electronics has taken the top position in the global OLED monitor market by capturing 34.7% of market share based on total revenue, and the top position in market share based on sales volume with 28.3% of OLED monitors sold in 2023.^[1]

“The OLED monitor market is highly competitive, so reaching the top spot requires unparalleled innovation and product quality,” said Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “This achievement speaks to our drive for excellence and understanding of consumer needs, the key factors in producing outstanding OLED monitors for performance-demanding gamers around the globe.”

Samsung has also maintained its leadership in the overall global gaming monitor market for the fifth consecutive year, recording a market share of 20.8% in terms of total revenue.^[2]

Since entering the OLED market, Samsung has continued to innovate and receive praise for new monitors, including the Odyssey OLED G9 (G95SC model), which received widespread acclaim from experts and reviewers worldwide.

At CES 2024, Samsung announced an expansion of its OLED monitor lineup, unveiling three new products:

The Odyssey OLED G9 is the first OLED monitor to offer Dual Quad High Definition (DQHD; 5,120 x 1,440) resolution with a 32:9 ratio. The high pixel density (110PPI) displays more detailed game content. Since the product features an impressive OLED display, colour, contrast, 240Hz refresh rate and has received many 10/10 ratings, Techaeris explained: “The G95SC provides that immersive and enveloping experience that every avid gamer is after. If you have the itch to buy a DQHD gaming monitor, the G95SC will scratch it, unquestionably.”

T3 shared that the Odyssey OLED G9 “brings a new level of immersion” and provides a “truly top-tier” and “untouchable” visual experience. The review team was so impressed with the monitor, they awarded it a five-star review and gave it the T3 Platinum Award score. T3 stated that the Odyssey OLED G9 is “a stunning monitor that gamers will love.”

The Odyssey OLED G9 is gaining popularity in countries around the world. In North America, 1,800 units were initially produced with the prepared stock selling out in less than two weeks while 700 units were sold in Europe. In Korea, the 100 available units were sold out in an hour, demonstrating the monitor’s market popularity.

Based on the first quarter of 2023, Samsung Electronics maintains a 23% global market share in gaming monitors with a refresh rate of 100Hz or higher, retaining its lead for the fifth consecutive year.

Samsung Unbox & Discover 2023 at Marina Bay Sands, Digital Light Canvas

Samsung Electronics unveiled its 2023 lineup of Neo QLED 8K, Samsung OLED, Lifestyle TVs and sound devices at its Unbox & Discover 2023 Singapore launch held at the Digital Light Canvas at Marina Bay Sands. The event will also be opened to the public on 7 and 8 April, where visitors can partake in exciting activities, including docent-led tours and gaming challenges to experience the WOW with the new lineup.

Under the tagline of “More Wow than Ever”, this year’s lineup showcases the latest innovations in premium audio and visual performances, gaming experiences, smart connectivity and sustainability initiatives for homes of all sizes. Samsung will also introduce more larger-sized TVs (75-inch and up) this year.

In a recent consumer survey conducted at the Samsung TV Tech Fair^[1]:

• 57% of respondents staying in a HDB flat and 51% staying in a condominium felt that a 75-inch TV was too big for their living rooms.
• However, following a demonstration of optimal TV viewing distance^[2], 84% of respondents living in HDBs and 90% of those living in condominiums are convinced that a 75-inch TV would fit in their living room.

Our recent study conducted at the Samsung TV Tech Fair showed that respondents clearly underestimated the size of their living rooms. Samsung HW-Q990C soundbar will feature Wireless Dolby Atmos Connectivity

In fact, the soundbar features the world’s first built-in wireless Samsung TV-to-soundbar Dolby Atmos connection. Samsung’s 2023 TVs will be equipped with Smart Hub ^[9]– the centrepiece of the connected home experience that brings together Entertainment, Ambient options, and SmartThings all in one place. Committed to the need to make smart device connectivity easier and more intuitive, users can connect to and control various SmartThings supported devices and appliances from their 2023 Neo QLED TV^[10].

With the SmartThings Zigbee & Matter Thread One-Chip Module built directly into the TVs, there is also no need for users to purchase a separate SmartThings dongle. The 2023 MICRO LED lineup offers new models ranging from 50 to 140-inches^[2] to provide consumers with a breadth of options for unparalleled picture quality and screen experience. Thanks to its modular nature, MICRO LED is not bound by shape, ratio and size, making it completely customizable to fit a consumer’s desired set up. • Recycled Materials: For the 2023 lineup, Samsung will replace 20% of the bracket parts used for the SolarCell Remote with recycled ocean-bound plastic. In addition, the main parts of the power board use recycled aluminum cans and copper, replacing approximately 12% of the original materials used.

• Reducing Manufacturing Impact: Samsung designed a light-weight injection mold that requires fewer materials, with a structure that can be repurposed, bringing down the overall energy consumption and raw materials needed for production.

• AI Energy Saving Mode: Through SmartThings, Samsung’s 2023 TVs support AI Energy Saving Mode, helping users save more energy in new ways. SmartThings Energy Service on TVs helps reduce carbon footprint of connected devices with simple changes, such as automatic switches to energy saving mode on specific devices when not in use. And with 3D Map View, it will be easier to get a holistic overview of connected devices and put energy saving ideas into practice.

• Eco-Packaging: In 2023, Samsung Eco-Packaging will come with minimal print so less ink is consumed in its production, and Samsung will use paper tape to reduce the use of plastic in its packaging. Additionally, package sizes will be reduced to lower overall carbon emissions.
