Creativity lies at the heart of everything we do. It transcends borders and redefines limitations, while cultivating new ideas and bringing them into life. Creatives demand tools that can fuel their artistic pursuits. Tools that translate their dreams and vision into reality. Enter the ViewFinity S9.

As part of the ViewFinity S9 Story series (see part 1 with DEVSISTERS and part 2 with OIMU here), Samsung Newsroom sat down with Emmy-winning artist Mike Perry, whose artistic explorations cover a broad spectrum, from the vivid and colourful paintings to whimsical animations and beyond, to talk about how his ViewFinity S9 fits into his creative process.

▲ Mike Perry

Mike Perry is an Emmy-winning multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, New York. He is known for his vibrant and imaginative paintings that often encourages viewers to see the world from a fresh perspective. His works often feature playful characters, fluorescent colour palettes and intricate patterns, transforming everyday reality into a dreamlike landscape that pushes the boundaries of creativity.

Q: Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

Oh, hi. I am Mike Perry. I am an artist based in New York. I make all kinds of crazy, fun, colourful things — paintings, drawings, animations — and work with incredible clients. I am living the dream. It is bright here, but not as bright as this beautiful monitor. Welcome to my studio!

Q: What role does your monitor play in your creative process?

The monitor is everything. I use it constantly. It is like a part of my eyeballs. It allows you to see the things you are making. You can see how they come to life. You just want them to be as beautiful and true to what is actually there in the real world.

When I am making a painting, I use it for the final step in the process. Basically, you know, colour correcting and taking different elements to make sure my images feel as rich and true as possible. When I work digitally, the monitor is basically just the same thing as the canvas. The monitor is essential. It is everything.

Q: What is the first thing that stood out when you saw the ViewFinity S9?

The first thing that popped out with the ViewFinity S9 was immediately just the colour itself. It is just bananas. I am kind of obsessed with fluorescent colours. I cannot stop using them. Colour is such an important part of my existence. Just look at how rich and bright, lush and gooey the beautiful monitor is. It was just incredible to turn the thing on and just watch it, poof, glow.

I was also impressed with how easy it was to just turn on and use. The benefit of making paintings and being a painter is that I am not always in front of a computer, so when I just popped it open out of the box, it was easy to put together and turn it on. And it just works.

Q: What does a Pantone Validated[1] monitor mean to creatives?

I love Pantone colours. It is been really great to see how true to life the Pantone Swatches are to the monitor. I mean, the Pantone book is definitely like a colour bible. It is essential. But then, you are always dealing with the reality of what is on screen versus what you are going to print with. You always have to take a leap of faith that it is going to match up because the digital to print world is so mysterious. So, it is just been really lovely to know that what I am looking at is the same as the colour on the swatches. It is incredible.

Q: Speaking of color accuracy, have you tried the Smart Calibration feature? What did you think of it?

I love the Smart Calibration feature.[2] It was so easy to use, and the app is so straightforward. You want things to represent themselves in the truest form so that you know what you are creating is going to translate across multiple platforms and different mediums. I love that I am able to make sure that the colours are represented the way that I want them to be. That is such a nice guarantee.

Q: What other features help bring your artistic visions to life?

One of the headaches that is given to digital artists is working widescreen versus 9:16. In normal screens, you can only see a little bit of 9:16 so it is such a bummer. So, being able to turn the screen and see the image the way it is supposed to is just amazing!

The Matte Display has been so lovely. The sun comes in the morning and pops through the windows, and it is my favourite part of the day but it just smashes right into my screen. It is just been lovely to not have sunlight disrupt my process and not have to step away from my computer while the sun is doing its beautiful thing. I also have The Frame TV at home, so I am quite used to the Matte Display at this point.

Q: What else can you tell us about your ViewFinity S9 monitor?

Lastly, the camera is great. The angle is really nice and I love this security guard. If I want to talk to somebody, I can jump on, and if not, then I am free. No one is watching me.

Q: Would you recommend ViewFinity S9 to other designers?

I find it incredibly important to have a beautiful monitor. Something with a lot of resolution, something that is going to give me the best that I can get and need for what I am working on. I will just say about ViewFinity S9 that colour is good.

<iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cz2gNZYtM40?rel=0" width="300" height="150" frameborder="0"

“Colour” is more than just a design element. It is a profound language that bridges emotions and experiences, allowing artists to create evocative messages

“Colour” is more than just a design element. It is a profound language that bridges emotions and experiences, allowing artists to create evocative messages that resonate on a deeper level. It is a vital component in the toolkit of any creative professional. Accurate monitors like the ViewFinity S9 provide artists with the ability to see and express colour accurately across various mediums, granting them total control over their artwork. This ensures that the final products are aligned with the artist’s original intent.

OIMU Studio, a design powerhouse in Korea, believes that design should act as a “connector.” Their work forges links between the values of the past and present, and between Eastern and Western traditions. Through various projects, including the renowned “Colour,” “Nobang” and “Match” projects, OIMU provides these connections to their audience, blending cultural traditions and offering a fresh and modern perspective to elements of the past.

In this second instalment of the ViewFinity S9 Story series, Samsung Newsroom sat down with Sohyun Shin of OIMU Studio to explore her inspirations and find out how ViewFinity S9 has become a vital tool in her artistic pursuit.

▲ Sohyun Shin, Founder and Chief Designer of OIMU

Established in 2015, OIMU is a lifestyle brand and design studio known for bridging cultural differences and reinterpreting nostalgic objects with a modern flair. Led by Sohyun Shin, the studio boasts with portfolio of projects that connect various traditional Korean elements with contemporary aesthetics.

Q: Could you briefly introduce OIMU to our readers?

OIMU is a lifestyle brand and design studio, dedicated to celebrating and promoting the cultural values and traditions of Korea through design and content. We are involved in publishing, exhibitions and products as well. One of our most well-known work is the “Colour” project, which created over 350 unique colour names in Korean. We aim to reinterpret Korea’s rich cultural heritage through design.

Q: Can you tell us about your recent project using the ViewFinity S9?

The “Colour” project began with a goal to develop unique colour names, typically in foreign languages, in Korean. Recently, we made 100 colour name cards for a brand exhibition. As these unique set of colours had precise CMYK values, it was important to express the colours as accurately as possible, to highlight those subtle and nuanced differences. The ViewFinity S9 monitor helped us match our print values to our digital designs, and we were able to prepare the final print as intended.

※ CMYK: A colour model used in colour printing with four ink plates: cyan, magenta, yellow and key (in many cases, black).

Outside of the “Colour” project, we also work with many delicate illustrations, which can appear blurry and unclear at places like print shops with ordinary monitors. ViewFinity S9, in contrast, presented images with outstanding clarity, allowing us to confidently move on with the card designs. I recently underwent LASIK surgery to improve my eyesight. If prior monitors reminded me of my sight before LASIK, the ViewFinity S9 felt like seeing with improved vision after! It has undoubtedly been a transformative tool.

Q: What is the most important factor when selecting a monitor?

Much of OIMU’s work, like any design studio, require attention to details. So, high resolution is essential. High resolution monitors allow us to be more intuitive and help us work on intricate designs by showing the subtle differences in colours and details.

Data processing is key in ensuring that physical prints turn out high-quality. ViewFinity S9 significantly reduces the margin of error during this process. When comparing digital and physical prints, you will find them nearly identical. In essence, ViewFinity S9 helps us create higher quality designs.

Q: What are your favorite features of ViewFinity S9?

There were reflections when we were using ordinary monitors, forcing us to use blinds. With ViewFinity’s Matte Display, reflections are minimised and colours are accurate even in sunlight. Now, I can work while enjoying the view and natural light.

Our studio has many windows, so, monitor glare is unavoidable. I like to work with the view of nature.

ViewFinity S9 minimises glares and reflections, so I can accurately check the colours even when it is bright outside.

Q: How else did ViewFinity S9 change your work environment?

Colour temperature is another important aspect in our line of work. With ViewFinity’s Smart Calibration feature,[1] we can calibrate precise onscreen colours without additional and often expensive equipment.

Also, ViewFinity S9 is great when I want to take a break from work, since I can watch my favorite shows on OTT streaming apps.[2] I also just love this cute remote control.

Q: Can you briefly introduce yourselves and tell us about your roles in 3D design?

Sangyi Kim: I am responsible for Lighting — creating natural light and shadows to spotlight 3D characters and objects. During this process, I focus on colour expression to enhance each character’s personality and charm. In addition, I handle compositing — combining 3D elements and effects from different sources into a single cohesive image.

Sena Yoo: I am in charge of marketing content planning for 3D-based Cookie Run, 3D General Motion Graphic Design, and Lighting. My major focus is on making 3D characters converted from 2D more dynamic with stories and motion graphics.

Q: What was your most recent 3D creation using the ViewFinity S9? How was the experience?

Sangyi Kim: As part of a collaborative project with Incheon International Airport Corporation, we recently had an exciting opportunity to create 3D content for the Media Tower in Terminal 1 at Incheon International Airport, to be on display until late August. The project required us to be meticulous as the content is displayed on a 27-meter screen, meaning that even the smallest imperfections will stand out. Fortunately, the ViewFinity S9 enabled us to review the content and visualise how it will be displayed to accurately identify any aspects that needed to be improved.

Sena Yoo: The Pivot feature was helpful when editing vertical videos as all we had to do was flip the monitor. I was concerned about the possibility of flickering and visual noise while displaying the content at a high resolution at the Media Tower. However, the ViewFinity S9 allowed me to check these issues in advance. What’s more, it was essential for the Cookie Run characters to have fluid and detailed motions to convey the joy and excitement of travel at the airport. That is why the ViewFinity S9 was the perfect monitor for this project.

Q: What are the differences between the ViewFinity S9 and other monitors you have used in the past?

Sangyi Kim: Adding light elements such as contrast and depth is very important as this makes the characters more realistic. ViewFinity S9 precisely presents colours and light the way it was meant to be seen, ensuring smooth colour gradation and avoiding the colour clumping common in other monitors. You do not see colours clumping together on other monitors.

Another impressive feature is how the monitor precisely displays both the light and dark parts of an image without distorting the colour. The difference is visible – the colour expression and detail on the ViewFinity S9 is simply superb, and it significantly boosts productivity.

Sena Yoo: ViewFinity is capable of showing the full spectrum of colours even in bright highlights or shadows. That is the biggest difference I have noticed. When we are applying final touches to the video, we could easily check for whiteout[1] or overly dark areas in images with shadow before exporting. We could see the video as it was meant to be seen before playing it on the Media Tower. It helped a lot.

Q: What is the most satisfying feature of the ViewFinity S9?

Sena Yoo: I was satisfied with the ViewFinity S9’s 5K resolution, as poor resolution can reduce the details of an image. Furthermore, the monitor clearly defines highlights and shadows, enhancing the clarity of the content.

Sangyi Kim: I love the flexibility of the ViewFinity S9. I can move the interface anywhere on the screen, meaning I have much more space to work with. On top of that, the monitor’s Matte Display effectively reduces reflections or glares from lights. I can focus on my work more comfortably without a light shade or a monitor hood.

Q: Are there any other features you want to highlight?

Sena Yoo: During meetings, we use Airplay now. Before, sharing screens was a hassle. But with ViewFinity S9, we can use Airplay to conveniently share our work on other monitors. Plus, the monitor is an all-in-one product that provides a variety of features for the creative process.

Sangyi Kim: Many 3D designers prefer CPU rendering rather than GPU rendering as it is more productive. As such, they prefer using monitors with Windows OS. However, I have noticed there are few monitors that support both 5K resolution and Windows OS. The ViewFinity S9 is a perfect choice for 3D designers who are looking for Windows OS compatibility.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to share about the ViewFinity S9 with designers?

Sena Yoo: For designers, the monitor is a sketchbook and a paintbrush. They need to express everything on a monitor as if it were a sheet of paper. Therefore, a monitor and its resolution are critical factors to consider when working in the 3D art industry. I believe the ViewFinity S9 is an ideal companion for 3D designers, as it supports ultra-high 5K resolution and advances work efficiency.

Sangyi Kim: I really believe ViewFinity was made with designers and creative professionals in mind. The colours are precise and the monitor is sleek and beautiful. It shines by itself. It gives you a real lift in terms of productivity. I cannot recommend it enough.
