50 years since the iconic first steps, we still haven’t seen anything better!

London, UK – July 19, 2019 – In a survey by Samsung QLED TV 63% of the UK stated that there hasn’t been a more iconic TV moment since we took “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. It also showed that sofas were far more preferable to a spaceship, with 56% preferring to experience space through a screen rather than in person.

Commissioned by Samsung QLED TV, the findings come as the world gears up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11’s moon landing which happened on 20th July 1969, when television enabled people around the world to witness one of mankind’s greatest achievements. Even though it has been half a century since the iconic steps, still 69% of those aged 65 and over voted the moon landing as the most historic TV moments of all time. Surprisingly, 18-24-year-olds also agreed, despite it being over 30 years before their time.

Samsung QLED pushes the boundaries of what’s possible. From picture quality to design, Samsung QLED enables incredible experiences, both on earth and beyond, to be experienced and enjoyed in accurate and life-like screen resolution. This will be appreciated by over half of the nation, as when asked how they would prefer to experience Space, 56 percent of those polled would prefer to enjoy it through a screen than go themselves. A sofa space mission was particularly appealing to those in Bath and Lincoln, with over three quarters opting for the screen experience (78% and 75% respectively). Those aged 55 and over would not want to experience space at all, while those aged between 25-34 were most keen to experience space themselves first hand.

“TV technology has been essential in bringing the world together to experience critical moments in modern history” said Guy Kinnell, Vice President, TV & AV Samsung Electronics UK Ltd. “At Samsung, we have worked tirelessly over the years to move the industry forward when it comes to premium picture quality, and the introduction of our QLED 8K TV with 8K AI Upscaling is an integral component as we look towards the future of viewing.” He added; “As we mark the 50th anniversary of Samsung Electronics and the first steps on the moon by mankind, it’s by looking back at some of the most iconic TV and cinematic moments from the past we can only wonder what the next 50 years may hold for the future of television and technology.”

The survey also discovered that the nation’s favourite cinematic space moment served up two joint winners, with over a fifth dubbing the duel between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker in ‘Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back’ the best – matched with Tom Hanks declaring “Houston, we have a problem” in Apollo 13, both amassing 21 percent of the overall vote each.

To celebrate the anniversary of the moon landing, Samsung also created a “Making History” QLED 8K TV commercial campaign, featuring moon landing footage licensed from the ground-breaking CNN documentary, ‘APOLLO 11’, using newly-discovered, never-before-seen 70mm archival footage and more than 11,000 hours of uncatalogued audio recordings from NASA and the National Archives.
