LIIT

HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) has had its fair share of the limelight over recent years but if all those burpees are getting boring, jump on the LIIT (Low Intensity Interval Training) bandwagon. HIIT’s calm little sister was big in the US in 2017 and now it’s set to hit the UK.

LIIT burns the same amount of calories as HIIT, but takes longer to complete and is nowhere near as brutal; it can simply be a walk or light jog. It’s quite a change to the high intensity version, which can take around 20 minutes and has us sweating it out with short, sharp periods of all-out work. LIIT however is almost relaxing and can actually be far kinder to the body.

Monty Simmons, Personal Trainer & Life Coach believes that undergoing endless HIIT sessions ‘isn’t sustainable’. Pushing the body can sometimes lead to injury, but LIIT is more about balance in your training regime.

‘When the body is pushed excessively, weaknesses in your system, muscle imbalances, skeletal misalignments and more will play havoc; leaving you riddled with aches, pains and injuries’, explains Monty.

He adds: ‘You don’t see world class MMA fighters training like they do in their pre-fight training camps all year round; they know it’s not sustainable. It’s no coincidence fighters notoriously injure themselves two weeks before a fight.’

Listening to your favourite tunes is great for LIIT motivation. Samsung Gear Sport and Gear Fit2 Pro have partnered with Spotify so you can listen to music without a smartphone nearby. Just download music onto your wearable and listen through the Icon X earbuds.

Virtual Reality

How about a scenic run along Australia’s Great Ocean Road, without actually leaving your front room? Although VR workouts have held their place on the fitness scene over recent years, Personal Trainer and Health Editor Lucy Gornall believes they will soon be more ‘readily available’. ‘Bkool is a virtual reality simulator that lets cyclists ride any route in 3D alongside other cyclists around the world, connected in real time. With the simulators, users actually experience the same sensations they would on the road,’ she explains.

There’s even the Omni by Virtuix- a small treadmill that when connected to a game, lets you jump, crouch and run with the treadmill keeping track of your every move.

Samsung have produced VR experiences in a variety of different areas including being able to experience a gym work out with Chris Eubank Jr.

Merged Workouts

We’ve already got Barry’s Bootcamp – think treadmills mixed with weights – and Barrecore, a brutal ballet-based workout that also incorporates light weights and resistance bands, but Diana Booty, Fitness Expert on behalf of The Harley Medical Group thinks we’ll see even more workouts offering the benefits of a variety of disciplines.

‘The forms it can potentially take are endless so it’ll be exciting to see which new concepts emerge over the next 12 months!’

Ashley Verma, Founder of DEFINE. London says clients are ‘getting bored at the gym’. In fact she’s created a workout that will keep people hooked. ‘I’ve merged the strength, fluidity, and endurance of ballet and other dance genres to create well thought out concept classes’, explains Ashley. So, what next? Tennis and yoga, perhaps?

Long term, Dr Sarah Brewer, GP and Healthspan Medical Director says whole body cryotherapy can improve athletic performance and recovery, aid sleep and weight loss and even slow the ageing process.

If being extremely cold doesn’t excite you, acupuncture and massages are other great recovery options.

Yoga, foam rolling and stretching– to name a few – help iron out muscle imbalances and postural dysfunctions. You’re moving, as you recover.

Monty Simmons, Personal Trainer & Life Coach explains that ‘we must allow our body to replenish, heal damage and make ‘gains’. Otherwise you’ll never experience it performing at maximum output because you’ll constantly be washed out,’ he adds.

Following the launch of Samsung’s new Wearables collection (Gear Sport, Gear Fit2 Pro and IconX 2018), an Unboxing Event was held at on-trend fitness space, 1Rebel, to place the devices in to the hands of its Master Trainers.

The fitness instructors were gifted Gear Sports and Gear Fit2 Pros, and were able to get hands-on with the products’ key features, including specific workout tracking, heart-rate and most importantly for an instructor, the stopwatch. The trainers put the devices to the test during an interactive workout session and revelled in reviewing their workout stats at the end.

Samsung’s wearable devices aim to create new goals for users to explore, and with the help of 1Rebel Master Trainers, Samsung was able to highlight all the fitness tracking and motivation the devices are capable of.

London, UK – 20 July 2017 – Samsung Electronics today announced that it has expanded the Samsung Pay experience onto the Gear S3 smartwatch in the UK, further solidifying Samsung as a leader in connected wearables.

Samsung Pay for Gear S3 is compatible with select Samsung devices and all non-Samsung mobile devices running Android 4.4 (KitKat). This independently enables payments on Gear S3 almost anywhere you can use your contactless credit or debit card* (including Transport for London), providing another payment option for Samsung Pay users. The user experience is intentionally similar to the phone version of Samsung Pay, allowing for greater consumer convenience and seamlessness when paying with Gear S3.

Setting up Samsung Pay on Gear S3 is easy. Simply install the most up-to-date version of the Samsung Gear App on your compatible mobile device, register your compatible card,  authenticate your ID, set-up your security PIN and you’re ready to start paying immediately.

Samsung Pay is designed to make paying with your device safe, simple and convenient;

• SIMPLE: With Samsung Pay, every transaction is easy. Users can launch Samsung Pay through simply holding the watch over a NFC payment reader with the top of the watch facing the NFC terminal.

The Gear Fit2’s update makes tracking fitness progress more intuitive and effective. Once a user completes an exercise with their Gear Fit2, for instance, listed among their post-workout stats will be a color-coded graph displaying time spent in various heart-rate zones. Broken down by level of exertion – ‘Moderate’, ‘Vigorous’ and ‘Maximum’ – the chart takes the user’s maximum heart rate into account to provide a simple rundown of the exercise’s efficiency.

Automatic activity detection has also been enhanced. Whenever a user exercises for more than ten minutes, the Gear Fit2 automatically activates its fitness-tracking functions. With the new update, the map displayed after a user completes an auto-tracked workout will also inform them of their approximate location.

To help users get in the zone during runs, the update also incorporates support for customizable pace targets. Simply input your desired distance and time via the Samsung Health smartphone app to build a workout tailored help you reach your running goals. Users may choose between runs designed to help burn fat or increase cardiovascular endurance, and select an intensity level that works for them. After establishing a target, the device will guide users through each stage of their exercise.

The update also lets users customize the information that’s displayed during workouts. The device offers a clear view of an array of useful workout data, including distance traveled, calories burned, the duration of an exercise, and the user’s heart rate. To adjust the data that’s prominently displayed, simply swipe across the Gear Fit2’s screen. A simple tap on the bottom of the screen will be displayed there additionally.

For users who need a little nudge now and then to get on their feet, 50 minutes of inactivity will prompt the Gear Fit2’s enhanced inactive alerts screen, which provides walkthroughs of simple stretches that can help you get back on track.

Of course, getting the most out of a workout requires getting a good night’s rest afterward, which is why the comprehensive Sleep Record notification offers users deeper insight into their personal sleep patterns.

Included with the evening’s sleep total is a simple multicolored graph that breaks down ‘Restless’, ‘Light’ and ‘Motionless’ sleep and informs you of how much time you spent in each zone. Users have the option to view their sleep data directly on their device, or via the Samsung Health app on their smartphone.

Other notable additions include the ability to send quick SOS alerts with your location by triple pressing the Gear Fit2’s Home key, and browse and download watch faces directly to the device, as well as via the Samsung Gear app.
