LONDON, United Kingdom – March 28, 2024 –The latest Samsung study on sleep[1] revealed that the UK has the least productive sleep patterns in Europe.

When the clocks go forward in early spring, people tend to discuss the effects of losing one hour of sleep on the following day. However, it can take much longer than a day to adjust.

To help the nation adjust as the clocks go forward to British Summer Time, Samsung Wellness Council shares advice from renowned clinical psychologist Dr Julie Smith.

Here are five tips to minimise sleep disruption during clock change and improve wellness in the weeks ahead.

Introduce small changes in your routine early.

Your biological clock cannot shift a whole hour in just one 24-hour period, so start in advance. In the week leading up to the clocks changing, start your bedtime routine 15 minutes earlier and set your morning alarm 15 minutes earlier. This way you won’t feel the sudden shock to the system of losing that hour of sleep and will feel much more ready for the new schedule.

Get moving!

We can’t just force ourselves to fall asleep earlier when the clocks go forward. Research suggests that exercising during the day can help us fall asleep quicker in the evening. So, if you’re struggling to fall asleep after the clocks change make sure you get in a good workout.

Spend as much time outside as you can.

To help induce sleepiness earlier, step outside as soon after waking as you can. Getting this dose of early morning light helps to set your circadian rhythm so that you can fall asleep at an earlier time and not build up days or weeks of inadequate sleep.

Move your bedtime routine.

While everyone talks about the struggle to get up in the morning, something that extends this period of adjustment is the difficulty with falling asleep earlier. We can’t simply go to bed one hour earlier and expect to fall asleep on demand. So, make a conscious decision to start preparing for sleep much earlier. Switch to low lighting, say no to the late-night snacks and do something that cues your brain for sleep, such as a bath or reading in a cool, low-lit room. Once you are falling asleep earlier, getting up the next day will feel easier and you’ll be ready to spring into action.

Understand and manage your sleep better

Sleep has a foundational role in serving our health and wellbeing, so it’s important to understand our body and mind more deeply. This is where smart devices can be helpful. I’ve been using the Samsung Galaxy Watch6 to support sleep management. It collects health data consistently and accurately, which plays a critical role in achieving better sleep.

The Galaxy Watch6 helps with understanding personal sleep patterns, building better habits, and establishing a sleep-friendly environment.

Understanding personal sleep patterns: Everyone’s sleep patterns are different, it’s important to learn what’s unique about yours. Samsung has made understanding this easy, by enabling the Galaxy Watch6 to determine your ‘sleep animal’. Each animal represents unique characteristics based on measuring the Galaxy Watch user’s sleep duration, consistency, and awake time – all of which influence sleep quality.

Building better habits: But tracking sleep isn’t enough by itself – establishing good habits is equally important, and Samsung makes it easy with Sleep Coaching, a personally tailored, month-long program that sets you on a path to set healthy habits and routines to help you achieve good night’s sleep consistently.

Establishing a sleep-friendly environment: Finally, it’s super important to establish a sleep-friendly environment with connected devices at home and Samsung offers a seamless connected experience with their SmartThings app. Small things like screen light or room temperature can impact our sleep. Galaxy Watch6 recognises when you fall asleep and can automatically change the settings of connected devices for a more prime sleep environment.

LONDON, UK – Tuesday 10th October 2023 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd: The UK is a nation of ‘sleep divorcees’, with 8 in 10 couples having slept apart

LONDON, UK – Tuesday 10th October 2023 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd: The UK is a nation of ‘sleep divorcees’, with 8 in 10 couples having slept apart before, a fifth of the nation sleeping apart regularly, and a further 29% of couples doing so permanently, in the quest for a good night’s rest.

What’s causing couples to resort to this unexpected arrangement? Nearly a quarter of adults in a relationship say they’re not ‘sleep compatible’ with their other half, with 23% blaming their partner’s sleeping habits for getting fewer than 5 hours of sleep a night.

The research commissioned by Samsung (for the launch of the Galaxy Watch6) also revealed that snoring (71%), restless sleeping/fidgeting (35%), and one or both waking up several times during the night (30%), are the factors topping the list of things that keep couples sleeping apart.

Despite this, all is not lost. As over three-quarters (77%) believe going to sleep next to and waking next to their partner is important, and nearly half (45%) feel getting a better night’s sleep with their partner would positively improve their relationship.

And while sleep-related issues or disagreements amongst couples are leaving the nation feeling exhausted/tired (41%), stressed (30%), and unproductive (15%), nearly two-thirds (62%) feel it is important to find a solution, to avoid sleeping separately to their partner.

To help bring harmony back to the bedroom, Samsung has teamed up with Clinical Psychologist and Sleep Expert Dr. Julie Smith, to show how the Galaxy Watch6 ‘Sleep Coaching’ function can help couples understand their sleeping habits better and put a stop to sleep divorce for good.

Dr. Julie Smith, Clinical Psychologist, Author, and Content Creator, said, “It seems a shame to resort to sleep divorce to get a good night’s sleep when neither of you would otherwise choose to sleep apart. So, if one or both partners are disturbing the sleep of the other, it makes sense to work out which of your habits around sleep might be making that worse. You can start by using a device to log your sleep patterns for you, like the Samsung Galaxy Watch6. The good news is that many of these bad sleeping habits are fixable, without having to resort to sleeping apart.”

“As nearly half of the UK’s couples struggle with each other’s sleeping habits, the new sleep features on the Samsung Galaxy Watch6 can provide meaningful insights that can lead to positive changes. With an in-depth analysis of sleep duration, quality, and cycles, couples can use the data to better understand each other’s personal sleep patterns – meaning a better night’s sleep for all,” said Annika Bizon, Marketing and Omnichannel Director for Samsung UK.

To help couples improve their sleeping routines, Dr. Julie shares her top tips for avoiding sleep disruptions, including how to use the Galaxy Watch6 to reach sleep success:

Taking hold of your sleep routine isn’t just about what you do when it comes to winding down in the evening, it includes a combination of different things you do throughout the day. Getting to grips with all the variables that can impact sleep can be overwhelming. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch6 has a Sleep Coaching feature which includes a tailored programme of tips to help guide the process, along with handy features like Snore Detection to help users find out more about their snoring habits.

Get to know the problem in more detail by considering all the things that may contribute to sleep disturbance for you or your partner. It is quite possible that some small changes could make a positive difference to sleep for both of you so that you don’t need to sleep apart.

Breaking old habits and forming new ones can be difficult. So, this is something to work on together, offering support and holding each other accountable. Couples see better outcomes when they see themselves as a team working on a problem, rather than seeing the other person as the problem.

When it comes to comparing the regions across the UK, those living in Northern Ireland have proven to be the most likely to sleep separately from their partners, with 73% citing sleep disruption as the main reason.

The region’s most likely to have partners sleeping in separate rooms:

Northern Ireland (73%)

Yorkshire and the Humber (71%)

South West (68%)

North East (66%)

Wales (65%)

The new Samsung Galaxy Watch6 series provides powerful insights that can lead to positive changes around the clock, offering personalised and actionable tips, advice, and encouragement.

Personalised Guidance for a Healthier You – Starting with Sleep[3]

Galaxy Watch6 series provides meaningful insights that can lead to positive changes around the clock, offering personalised and actionable tips, advice and encouragement. Recognising that better health begins with better sleep, Samsung is helping users optimise their night in the same way they optimise their day by focusing on three key elements of better sleep: understanding personal sleep patterns, building better habits and establishing a sleep-friendly environment.

Building on leading-edge sleep and wellness features, Galaxy Watch6 series now offers in-depth analysis of Sleep Score Factors[4] – total sleep time, sleep cycle, awake time, plus physical and mental recovery – to help users understand the quality of sleep received each night. More individualised Sleep Messages4, co-developed with the National Sleep Foundation, also provide users with detailed feedback about their sleep health each morning. Additionally, Galaxy Watch6 offers Sleep Consistency showing how consistent the user’s sleep and wake times are, and a designated Sleep Animal Symbol representing their sleep type5.

Enhanced Sleep Coaching[5] enables users to put sleep insights into action with tailored instructions, tips and reminders accessible on both their wrist and paired smartphone. When it’s time for bed, Galaxy Watch6 can help set the perfect sleep environment by automatically changing the settings of connected home electronics[6] and turning on Sleep Mode across the user’s watch and phone[7] to mute notifications, dim screens, and even to activate the invisible LED infrared sensor on the watch to deliver valuable health insights without additional light distractions.

Fitness features get more personalised to keep users motivated throughout their journey. Body Composition[8], with key physical measurements like skeletal muscle, basal metabolic rate, body water and body fat percentage, provides a complete snapshot of the user’s body and fitness, offering a tailored approach to set goals, track progress, and guide through personalised fitness and now nutritional tips via a new partnership with Whisk.

A new Personalised Heart Rate Zone feature analyses individual physical capabilities[9] and defines five optimal running intensity levels to help users set their own goals based on their ability – from burning fat to high intensity workout. In addition to over 100 existing workout trackers, the newly added Track Run records the user’s runs on a track, while Custom Workout allows users to build and track their personalised workout routine.

Added to existing blood pressure[10] and electrocardiogram[11] monitoring, HR Alert[12] helps users better understand their heart health, detecting abnormally high or low heart rates in the background.

Galaxy Watch6 can also enable users to track skin temperature during the night to give valuable insights including menstrual cycle tracking[13]. And Fall Detection[14] can gauge a fall, whether occurring during exercise, when standing still, or even while sleeping if users happen to fall out of bed. Once a fall is detected, your watch will automatically alert an emergency service number or pre-selected contacts.

Maximising Your Experience Right from Your Wrist[20]

Galaxy Watch6 series brings greater capabilities to the wrist of every user. The new Samsung Wallet[21] on Galaxy Watch6 combines Samsung Pay with Samsung Pass to incorporate more of the user’s wallet – including event tickets and boarding passes as well as bank loyalty and membership cards – in their watch. Enhanced Gesture Control allows users to conveniently manage their watch using simple gestures for greater accessibility and ease, letting them set their own shortcuts and now access apps and functions touch-free.

WhatsApp makes it easier for Galaxy Watch users to stay connected with friends and family, all without getting out a phone. Starting from this autumn, users can stay productive right from their watch with new apps from Google Calendar and Gmail, which will be exclusively available on Wear OS. They can also track fitness progress or nutritional data more easily with Peloton and MyFitnessPal updates, and coming soon, enjoy additional streaming options with Audible. Additionally, with the introduction of a new Skin Temperature API – a part of the Samsung’s Privileged Health software development kit (SDK) – partners will soon have access to advanced infrared technology for more accurate measurements to bring a whole new world of possibilities to users. A newly launched Thermo Check app takes advantage of the new API, allowing users to measure the temperature of their favorite meal or the ocean before a lap swim, contact-free.

Together with other Samsung devices, Galaxy Watch6 series expands user experiences even further. The upgraded Camera Controller enables remote control of a paired Galaxy Z Flip5 camera[22] to switch modes and zoom. Samsung Smart TV[23] or Galaxy Tab S9 shows the user’s progress in real time with a guided fitness or mindfulness program on the large screen. Users can also automatically toggle the connection of Galaxy Buds2 Pro between Samsung devices via Auto Switch. Should users happen to misplace their phone, Galaxy Watch6 series can now pinpoint its location through Find My Phone with map support[24].

And as always, personal data on the watch remains secure thanks to the Samsung Knox security platform.
