LONDON, UK – May 9, 2025 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced that its latest lineup of QLED TVs has received ‘Real Quantum Dot Display’ certification from TÜV Rheinland, an international certification organisation based in Germany. The certification verifies that Samsung’s QLED TVs meet global standards for quantum dot display structure, reinforcing the company’s technological leadership in the premium TV market.

The certification confirms that Samsung QLED TVs comply with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 62595-1-6 standard, which defines the application of quantum dot (QD) light converting unit combined with blue light sources for standard QLED displays.

As part of the certification process, TÜV Rheinland analysed the light spectrum produced by Samsung QLED TVs and confirmed that it displayed clear separation between red, green, and blue—an important marker of colour accuracy. This distinction is enabled by quantum dots and may not be as pronounced in displays using alternative materials, which can sometimes cause color mixing or reduced clarity. The results demonstrate how Samsung’s use of quantum dots contributes to delivering vivid and precise colour expression.

With the latest certification, Samsung’s QLED TVs are officially validated as true quantum dot displays, further differentiating Samsung’s offerings and strengthening consumer trust in premium television technologies.

“This certification objectively validates that Samsung QLED TVs deliver true quantum dot performance built to international standards,” said Taeyong Son, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to drive innovation and strengthen consumer trust as we lead the premium TV market.”

The series that have received certification include the Neo QLED 8K (QN990F, QN950F), Neo QLED 4K (QN90F, QN85F, QN80F, QN70F), and QLED 4K (Q8F, Q7F, Q6F) series.

Quantum dots are ultra-fine nanomaterials, tens of thousands of times smaller than a human hair, renowned for their ability to reproduce precise and vivid colours depending on light wavelength. The method by which quantum dots are integrated into display panels has become a key indicator for evaluating technological advancement in the premium TV segment.

Separately, Samsung’s quantum dot technology has also been recognised by global testing organisation Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) for its excellence in cadmium-free design—an environmentally conscious approach that eliminates the use of cadmium, a toxic heavy metal known to pose risks to human health and the environment.

Quantum Dots: The Next Generation of Display Innovation

Quantum dots are ultra-fine semiconductor particles that are tens-of-thousands times thinner than a human hair. Since inception, their physical characteristics that allow them to provide the highest level of colour accuracy and brightness among existing materials positioned them to revolutionise display technology.

When used in displays, quantum dots support a wide colour gamut that closely matches colours perceived by the human eye and facilitate pixel-level light adjustment for more accurate black levels. Emitting light in all directions, quantum dots deliver uniform luminance and consistent colour from any viewing angle while minimising blue light exposure for a more comfortable viewing experience.

What Sets Samsung’s QD TVs Apart: Content, Film Quality and No-Cadmium Technology

The TV industry continues research and development into the commercialisation of quantum dots as the material becomes a game-changer in display technology. For that reason, a variety of quantum dot TVs have hit the market recently — offering a wide range of options to customers.

However, key differences in quantum dot TVs lie in how the technology is implemented and the overall quality of the display. To ensure a premium viewing experience, factors such as the amount of quantum dot content, the quality of quantum dot film and the use of no-cadmium materials must be considered.

▲ Factors to consider when selecting a high-quality quantum dot TV

Quantum Dot Content

The true quality of a quantum dot TV is defined by its quantum dot content. Higher concentrations of Quantum Dots in the QD layer are required to achieve the vivid, rich picture quality and colour expression that QLED displays are known for.

Quantum Dot Film

Quantum dot displays have a simpler and more efficient structure compared to LCDs. Samsung QLEDs eliminate the need for a phosphor layer, as the QD layer itself, together with the blue backlight combine to enhance brightness and deliver more vivid colours. A quantum dot OLED (QD-OLED), which consists of a thin-film transistor (TFT) layer[1], a self-emitting light source and a quantum dot film that uses the light emitted from the light source, takes a step further enhancing picture quality. In either case, a dedicated quantum dot film that contains sufficient quantum dots is key in delivering top-class picture quality and longevity.

▲ A comparison of QD-OLED and LCD displays

No Cadmium

In the early stages of developing quantum dot TVs, cadmium was considered the most efficient material for producing quantum dots and essential to achieving the technology’s key benefits of quantum dots such as colour reproduction and contrast ratio.

However, cadmium’s toxicity and environmental impact became a significant obstacle to the commercialisation of quantum dot technology. The use of cadmium in consumer electronics is permitted, but is subject to stringent safeguards as the material restricted under EU law[2], making its widespread use difficult despite being the most suitable material for implementing quantum dot technology.

In response to this challenge, Samsung developed and patented the world’s first no-cadmium quantum dot material in 2014 and successfully commercialised quantum dot technology with its SUHD TVs in the following year to open a new era of quantum dot TVs. To this day, Samsung remains the only major TV brand to bring this technology to the market.

10 Years of Quantum Dot Innovation and Leadership

Samsung was one of the first to recognise the potential of quantum dot technology and has led innovation in the global display market over the past decade through continuous research and investment.

▲ A timeline of Samsung’s quantum dot technology development from 2001 to 2022

Samsung began researching and developing quantum dot technology in 2001 — at a time when there was limited research on non-cadmium materials. Achieving vivid colours required making the nano-sized particles uniform, but the lack of technology and research made mass production extremely challenging.

Despite these obstacles, Samsung succeeded in creating a no-cadmium nanocrystal material in 2014. Since then, the company has accumulated extensive expertise — registering more than 150 patents — and continuously worked on advancing the technology. As noted above, delivered another innovation in 2015 when it unveiled the world’s first SUHD TVs with no-cadmium quantum dot technology.

▲ QLED TVs (75Q8C and 88Q8F) at Samsung’s First Look 2017 event during CES 2017

Not wanting to stand still, Samsung further refined the technology when it released its first QLED lineup in 2017, setting a new standard for premium TVs. By applying metal quantum dot technology, Samsung achieved the Digital Cinema Initiative’s colour standard DCI-P3 and achieved 100% colour volume for the first time — thereby presenting unparalleled colour expression[3] Notably, the use of inorganic quantum dot technology protected the screens from burn-in[4] to ensure consistent picture quality over time.

▲ (From left to right) Kwang-Hee Kim, Dr. Taehyung Kim, Dr, Eunjoo Jang, Sungwoo Kim and Seon-Myeong Choi from Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology

Following its success in developing a red light-emitting element for displays in 2019, the company enhanced the luminous efficiency of blue self-emitting QLEDs — considered the most challenging to implement among the three primary QLED colours[5] — to an industry-leading 20.2%[6]

“Discovering a blue material for self-emitting QLEDs and demonstrating industry-leading performance at the device level were significant achievements of this research,” said Dr. Eunjoo Chang, a fellow at Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology. “Samsung’s distinctive quantum dot technology has once again overcome technical barriers.”

These cutting-edge advancements didn’t stop there. They led to the launch of the QD-OLED TVs, making history at CES 2022 by winning the Best of Innovation award for integrating quantum dot technology and OLED displays.

Our latest Neo QLED models take things one step further by replacing standard LEDs with a higher number of mini-LEDs, allowing for even more detail, brightness, and vivid colours, and are even available with 8K resolution. It goes without saying that we complement the hardware with the latest software, including AI Upscaling and optimisation and now, Vision AI as well[7]

Samsung remains dedicated to advancing quantum dot technology through continuous innovation. The company continues to invest in leading display technology — from QLED through QD-OLED to Neo QLED — by offering high brightness, colour accuracy and frequency. Driven by Samsung’s unrivalled quantum dot innovations, the future of display technology is brighter than ever.

LONDON, UK – 16th November 2022- Millions of Brits are still sore as they vote Diego Maradona’s infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal against England in the 1986 World Cup as the most controversial decision in the tournament’s history, according to new research released today.

Frank Lampard’s disallowed goal against Germany (33%), Thierry Henry’s handball against the Republic of Ireland in the World Cup Qualifiers 2009 (28%), and West Germany goalkeeper Schumacher’s unpunished, incredible foul against France’s Patrick Battiston in 1982 (21%) also feature in the list of the top World Cup referee blunders.

The list was revealed from a poll of 2,000 football fans, commissioned by Samsung UK to showcase the new 2022 range of Neo QLED TVs, which are powered by Quantum Dot technology, providing stunning picture quality and true-to-life colours.

A panel of football experts, including former FIFA referee Dermot Gallagher, compiled the list of controversial movements, which was put to a public vote. The experts also examined how VAR would have changed the outcome of the decisions, had the technology been available back then.

The top 10 controversial World Cup decisions as voted by Brits are:

Although VAR accuracy has increased, decisions in recent Premier League games have still left fans baffled. Nearly a third (32%) of those surveyed have said that their team has been negatively affected by a poor VAR decision this season, with a further 31% suggesting the bigger teams such as Liverpool get favourable decisions over less popular sides.

VAR analyst and former professional referee Dermot Gallagher said: “As a proud Irishman, the most controversial decision for me has to be Thierry Henry’s handball in the World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland in 2009. With VAR and decent tech in place, the foul would have been called, bringing the tied game to penalties.”

August 31, 2022 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. will unveil the Odyssey OLED G8 (Model Name: G85SB) – another premium addition to the Odyssey lineup – at IFA 2022 in Berlin, Germany, further reinforcing the Odyssey’s industry-leading position. The Odyssey OLED G8 is the company’s first OLED gaming monitor and will be available in an ultra-thin, 34-inch form factor, delivering brilliant brightness on an OLED panel partnered with Quantum Dot Technology and packed full of premium gaming features including an incredibly low 0.1ms response time and 175Hz refresh rate.

The new 34-inch, Odyssey OLED G8 is built to an ultra-slim thickness of 3.9mm at its thinnest part – the slimmest in its product category – and finished with a sleek, metal frame. The monitor requires no backlighting, while delivering true RGB and true black for maximum colour accuracy and brightness – all without a colour filter. The lighting is controlled in pixels which can be expressed in black with a near-infinite contrast ratio.

The ultra-wide, QHD resolution (3,440 x 1,440) gaming monitor has a 21:9 aspect ratio with 100% colour volume and DCI-99.3% colour gamut for incredible visuals regardless of the game being played. This is enhanced by a million-to-one static contrast ratio to bring out the most subtle details for enhanced immersion and 1800R curvature for the perfect playing view.

The Odyssey OLED G8 is packed with gaming features to give any player a competitive edge. First, the OLED monitor is VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black Certified, ensuring content will appear vivid and life-like with accurate colour and contrast reproduction. In addition to the rapid response time and refresh rate of the Odyssey OLED G8, which gives gamers lightning-quick response capabilities and real-world accuracy in a range of gaming environments, the monitor is further enhanced by AMD FreeSync Premium for smooth gameplay.

The Odyssey OLED G8 also enables users to experience the best of gaming, entertainment and lifestyle features all in one place. The display operates as a complete entertainment hub with the ability to stream content through Samsung’s Smart Hub, giving access to the latest shows on Amazon Prime, Netflix, YouTube, and other leading OTT (over-the-top) service providers, even without a connection to a PC or mobile device. In addition, users can enjoy free live content without the need for downloads or sign-ups, made possible by Samsung TV Plus.

The integrated IoT hub allows the users to check all the IoT devices wirelessly connected to the monitor, while the SmartThings app allows users to monitor IoT devices throughout the house with ease. The app’s intuitive control panel can help monitor and adjust settings such as temperature and humidity.

Samsung Gaming Hub[1] – an all-in-one game streaming discovery platform – is built into the Odyssey OLED G8. Players can discover and play games from partners such as Xbox, NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Google Stadia, Utomik and Amazon Luna (US Only), with instant access to top streaming services. This capability is powered by Samsung’s advanced game streaming technology for smooth visuals and responsive gameplay, all with no downloads or storage space requirements.

The Odyssey OLED G8 also gives users comfort as they play their favorite games. A Height Adjustable Stand (HAS), as well as Tilt functionality provides ergonomic efficiency that means any gamer can find the perfect position regardless of what they are playing, whether it be a racing game or an open world fantasy adventure.

For further visual immersion, the display is equipped with the Odyssey portfolio’s well-known CoreSync & Core Lighting+ which has been upgraded for the Odyssey OLED G8. Found on the rear of the monitor, this advanced lighting technology matches the colours on-screen, bringing content to life with bright and vivid colours that create more memorable, immersive experiences. Moreover, the Odyssey OLED G8 is equipped with Micro HDMI (2.1), Mini DP (1.4) and USB-C ports for versatile connectivity, in addition to a 5W stereo speaker for crisp sound.
