London – Friday, December 6, 2024: As Christmas draws closer, new research from Samsung found that leftovers are a consistent headache for Christmas cooks, keeping our fridges jam-packed throughout the festive season, with one in four (80%) of households admitting to being left with surplus supplies after the main Christmas dinner or lunch.

Turkey was the main offender, with one in four households having leftovers, followed by the humble potato and the much-maligned Brussel sprout.  Gravy, carrots, and chocolates tie at 15%, while indulgent treats like Christmas cake (14%) and cheese (13%) also make the list.

Samsung Food now features enhanced tools designed to support users to better maintain their health and to reach wellness goals. The platform provides nutrition-focused meal plans that track and monitor caloric intake within daily meal schedules, whether for recipes or individual food items. It offers “Tailored for You” plans^[5], delivering weekly recipe and snack recommendations based on users’ nutritional needs^[6], chosen diets and previous recipe preferences. AI Features That Enable Food Ideas and Intelligence

To enhance the experience in the kitchen, the 2024 Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+ has been packed with a variety of innovative technologies. One impressive new feature is AI Vision Inside, which uses a smart internal camera that can recognize items being placed in and out of the refrigerator. Also, it is equipped with ‘Vision AI’ technology, which can identify up to 33 different fresh food items based on predefined set of training data comprising approximately one million food photographs^[2] . With the food list that is available and editable on the Family Hub+ screen, users can also manually add expiration date information for items that they would like to keep track, and the refrigerator sends out alerts through its 32” LCD screen for items before reaching that date.

Also, with the assistance of the Fridge Manager feature, which monitors the status of the water filter in the refrigerator and alerts when a replacement is needed, the Family Hub+ screen offers easy, one-click purchase of new water filters from Amazon^[3].

Appliance screen functionality does not stop there. Samsung’s new Anyplace Induction Cooktop and Slide-in Range are each equipped with a 7” LCD screen, where users can view the recipes that were selected and saved from the Family Hub+ to assist their meal preparation. The new Anyplace Induction also offers improvements in its basic cooking features such as efficient and borderless heating of pots and pans on any part of the cooktop, thanks to Samsung’s induction sheet coil technology. And with Anti-Scratch Glass applied instead of a typical ceramic glass, users won’t have to worry about scratching their induction surface when moving cookware.

What’s more, the Samsung Food application — which can now be accessed on the Family Hub+, the Anyplace Induction Cooktop and the Slide-in Range — brings several upgraded AI features. The ‘Personalize’ feature³ powered by the enhanced Food AI allows users to adapt recipes to reflect their dietary requirements beyond what was previously available — vegan, fusion — to accommodate gluten-free, pescatarian, dairy-free and other diets. LONDON, UK – Tuesday 6th September 2023 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd: While the nation’s enthusiasm to give baking a go is renewed when its favourite baking competition hits the screens – more than three quarters (77%) are incapable of baking a successful cake, admitting they don’t have what it takes to be a star baker.

With September officially the UK’s biggest birthday month, melted icing, soggy bottoms and dry sponge risk leaving our efforts looking half-baked, with over half the nation (53%) admitting to throwing cakes out because they are inedible.

And despite birthdays being 50% of the nation’s favourite occasion for cake-making, some Brits have even admitted to faking it rather than baking it, as nearly a quarter (23%) have gone as far as buying a cake and passing it off as their own.

The new research by Samsung also reveals that making a cake is a technical challenge for Brits, with the UK’s top fails including cakes not rising (33%), burning the top (20%), and having a soggy bottom (19%).

And those living in Leicester have proven to be the nation’s worst bakers, with 15% rating their baking skills as terrible.

To avoid birthday-bake disasters, Becky Excell shares her top tips for creating a showstopper:

1. Weigh out your ingredients using digital electronic scales: Precision is everything when it comes to baking. Add a little too much or not enough of something and you can completely alter the texture of a cake. Fortunately, digital electronic scales are very affordable these days, and you can often pick up a good one in supermarkets or online.

2. Bake smart with the right equipment: It can be so easy to get excited or anxious about how a bake is coming along, but opening the oven mid-way through to check will result in an instant change of temperature, which can lead to a cake sinking or collapsing. I know it’s tempting to sneak a peek but try not to! It can also be easy to open the oven when you’re baking a batch of cookies for instance and think they’re nowhere near done because they’re still really soft. However, remember that the heat inside the cookies will allow them to continue baking a little once out of the oven. If you leave them in until they are firmer, you will end up with hard, crumbly, overbaked cookies.

The beauty of the Series 7 Bespoke AI Oven is that, with its internal camera and powerful AI, you can check on your bake along its journey without having to open the oven door at all. It even has a burn detection settingwhich you can use via the SmartThings App.

3. Cool down: Allow your bakes to fully cool down before decorating them. I know you might be in a rush to finish a cake, but icing a cake whilst it’s still warm is the worst idea ever, as the icing will likely melt or slide off. More haste, less speed! Also, don’t forget to remove your bakes from their tins and allow them to fully cool on a cooling rack.

4. Use room temperature ingredients unless the recipe says otherwise: When it comes to baking, it’s always a good idea to ensure your ingredients are all at room temperature. Guaranteeing none are too hot or too cold will mean that they all combine well, forming a smoother batter and a better-textured cake. Get your butter out of the fridge well in advance of when you need it and, if you keep your eggs in the fridge, make sure they come out before they’re needed too. There are of course situations where you’ll need cold butter, such as when making pastry, but room temperature is best for cakes.

5. Don’t leave your cake batter sitting around for too long: When baking a cake, always make sure you pre-heat the oven first because you don’t want your cake batter sitting on the side for too long! Raising agents within the batter will start to activate and this will lead to your cake not rising as much when it goes into the oven.

Taking small steps for our planet 

Samsung is committed to developing products and services that help people save money and take steps towards a better planet. These topics are high on the agenda for consumers too, over three quarters (77%) say they seek out tech products that save energy – not only to save money, but for the benefit of the environment too[8]. Two-thirds (67%) also consider it important that their next appliance can connect to an app that allows them to monitor and reduce their energy consumption[9].

With energy prices increasing across Europe[10], 72% of those asked are concerned about the cost of running appliances in their home[11]. To help combat this, SmartThings Energy can help users optimise the energy used across their appliances to suit their needs and lower usage. For example, AI Energy Mode in SmartThings Energy allows you to monitor and reduce your washing machine’s energy use by up to 70%[12] by using Ecobubble to wash with cool water instead of warm.

Samsung has also partnered with global ocean conservation organisation Ocean Wise and apparel maker Patagonia to find solutions to the issue of microfiber shedding. The Less Microfiber Filter is an external washing machine filter that cuts up to 98% of microplastic emissions from laundry cycles[13]. Speaking at IFA, Charlie Cox, Manager of Microplastic Solutions at Ocean Wise said: “Through our collaboration with Samsung and Patagonia, Ocean Wise is proud to have shown a way for industry to play its part in stemming the flow of microfibers into the ocean. Through innovations like the Less Microfiber Filter, we can empower individuals to reduce their microfiber footprint at home. It is a simple, everyday solution that our oceans will thank us for.”

Heating technologies like heat pumps represent a rapidly growing market, and Samsung is at the forefront of this growth. Its innovative smart air source heat pumps have seen an unprecedented 97% growth in sales since 2022^[14]. These work with domestic hot water tanks or with Samsung’s ClimateHub, to make your home comfortable all year round, whatever the weather. They can also connect to the SmartThings ecosystem, so their energy use can be monitored and tailored to the user’s preferred environment[15]. The latest addition to its range of high temperature monobloc heat pump solutions, the EHS Mono R290, launches in September.

Samsung’s journey is constantly evolving as it aims to design technology that helps people make the most of their day while taking small steps to reduce our environmental impact. The Galaxy Z Flip5[16] and Fold5[17] and the Galaxy Tab S9[18] series feature a variety of recycled materials, including recycled aluminium, glass and plastics sourced from ocean-bound discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles. Watching their home while they aren’t there (54%), feeling safer when home alone (39%) and keeping their family safe when they are out of the house (39%) are seen as the key safety benefits of smart technology[20].

London, United Kingdom – August 31, 2023 – Samsung Electronics today announced the launch of Samsung Food, a new personalised, AI-powered food and recipe platform.

Releasing in eight languages in 104 countries around the world, Samsung Food will offer comprehensive food experiences through more than 160,000 available recipes, acting as a personalised assistant that helps users discover new dishes, create tailored meal plans and order ingredients online. The service will also help users control their cooking appliances, guide them through cooking processes and allow them to share their favorite recipes through social functions.

Building on the foundation of Samsung’s wide range of cooking appliances and food services, Samsung Food utilises big data and AI technology to go beyond existing capabilities and deliver a food platform truly adapted to the needs and lifestyles of its users. To accomplish this, Samsung Food draws from the extensive database of Whisk, a recipe app acquired by Samsung in 2019 that leverages Food AI technology.

Food Your Way: Recipe Exploration and Personalisation, AI-enhanced Meal Planning, Kitchen Connectivity and Social Sharing

Samsung Food’s wide range of features supports users every step of the way during the meal planning and cooking process, spanning four key areas: recipe discovery and personalisation, tailored meal planning, connected cooking and social functions.

For recipe discovery, Samsung Food lets users save recipes to their personal digital recipe box anytime from anywhere. The app analyses recipes, standardises their format and organises them to create shopping lists based on their ingredients.

Samsung Food also comes with a Personalise Recipe function, enabling the app’s Food AI to directly change a saved recipe to better reflect users’ dietary lifestyles – by converting a recipe into a vegan or vegetarian version, for example – make a recipe more nutritionally balanced or incorporate in-stock ingredients. Users will even be able to create fusion recipes, such as Korean versions of Italian dishes, and adjust the cook time or skill level of a recipe.

To create individualised daily meal plans for users, the app makes AI-created recommendations based on health data, dietary preferences and favorite cuisine types and lets users add them to their meal planner. Full nutritional breakdowns of ingredients are available at any time, and users can add items to their Samsung Food shopping list then send it straight to a retailer’s e-commerce checkout.

With connected cooking, seamless Samsung Food connectivity lets users set timers, preheat ovens and send recipes’ cook settings straight to appliances through step-by-step guided cooking modes, all from their portable devices. Starting with the Bespoke Oven, Samsung Electronics plans to connect numerous appliances – including Bespoke induction ranges and Bespoke microwaves – to Samsung Food by the end of the year to expand convenience for users in the kitchen.

Through socialising features, users can share their favorite dishes with the community, create and publish their own recipes and follow their favorite food content creators.

From Samsung Health Incorporation to Vision AI: Upcoming Features for Samsung Food

Beyond Samsung Food capabilities available at launch, Samsung will continue adding new features and services to the app for an even more seamless and comprehensive personal food experience.

By the end of the year, Samsung Health will work together with Samsung Food to provide optimised solutions for health management, including personalised meal recommendations based on data such as BMI, body composition and calorie consumption, helping users hit health goals while maintaining a balanced diet.

Planned for implementation in 2024, Vision AI technology will enable Samsung Food to recognise food items and meals photographed through the camera and provide details about them, including nutrition information. By analysing food items, the app can recommend the best recipes to use them with, save these recipes to the user’s collection and add the required ingredients to a shopping list, all in a few taps.
