• Oscars announcement of the wrong 'best picture' winner, voted Most Memorable TV Moment, with close second from Blue Planet II
• Ant & Dec voted Favourite TV presenter/s
• Paddington 2 the film people would love to watch on Christmas Day
Samsung Electronics has today revealed the nation’s top moments on TV throughout 2017 in its ‘Year in Review’; a poll of 2,000 Brits.
With its immersive camera work and enthusiastic narration, the second series of David Attenborough’s ‘Blue Planet’ sailed effortlessly to the top of polls, most notably with a resounding 49% of the favourite documentary vote. The wildlife show has continued to captivate hearts for the second year running, with blockbuster moments in nature ensuring it was also awarded ‘Tear-Jerker Moment of the Year’ when the mother whale carried her calf across the ocean, and ‘Most Shocking Moment’ when the fish jumped out of the ocean and caught the bird.
Moving onto the most memorable moments, and top of the list (with 21%) sees the biggest mistake in Academy Awards history, in which Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway wrongly announced ‘La La Land’ as winner of the Best Picture Award – after being handed the wrong envelope. Speeches were interrupted to announce the real winners as ‘Moonlight’, with an awkward exchange on stage imprinting the moment forever in viewers minds. Other memorable moments include:
- The One Love concert in Manchester (20%)
- The backdrop falling on Theresa May at the Conservative Party conference (17%)
The evergreen Geordie duo Ant & Dec cemented their reign as Kings of the small screen, reaching top of the polls for Most Favourite TV presenters with 33% of the vote, continuing to raise laughs with their energetic performances on popular shows such as ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’ and ‘Saturday Night Takeaway’. Nation’s sweetheart Holly Willoughby and household favourite Philip Schofield earned a respectable 17% and 11% respectively for their on-screen chemistry on This Morning.
A nation of softies: Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy – in which never before seen footage was shown in the 20th anniversary of her tragic death passing – reignited the country’s love for the Princess, securing the programmes place as most popular bio-documentary in 2017 with 21% of the vote. A close second, Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum and Dad (20%) showed an honest, more present account of life following loss of loved one, with a particular focus on grief and its effect on men – a topical issue to which many could relate.
Stephen Mitchell, Head of TV Product Management at Samsung UK commented: “As the leader in home entertainment for over 11 years, it’s only right that Samsung explores the highs and lows of British TV in 2017 alongside the nation. Television can be powerful and thought provoking medium and with our QLED technology, which offers unrivalled colour, deep blacks and bold contrast levels – viewers are able to immerse themselves even more with the most life-like picture to date.”
