Winners of the 2022 Solve for Tomorrow: Next Gen Competition are Announced

Samsung Electronics UK is excited to announce the winners and runners up for the second year of the Solve for Tomorrow: Next Gen Competition

 

LONDON, UK – 26th September, 2022 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd announced the winners of the second iteration of the Solve for Tomorrow: Next Gen Competition following a summer of workshops and ideas generation. This year, the programme encouraged 11-15 year olds across the UK to learn about the basics of Design Thinking, careers in STEM, and to create and submit their own ideas of how technology could solve a societal issue.

 

As part of Samsung’s ongoing mission to defy barriers to help young people from all backgrounds find their purpose in tomorrow’s world, Solve for Tomorrow: Next Gen seeks to empower the next generation of innova tors, inviting students aged 11-15 to imagine a better world. The programme provides free online resources for schools, youth groups and families to help inspire the next generation of innovators. In 2022, young people learnt the basics of ‘Design Thinking’ and got a glimpse into creative STEM careers such as design and marketing with employees from Samsung. They then used everything they learnt to inspire their entries for the Solve for Tomorrow: Next Gen Competition, with 481 entries submitted to the judging panel.

 

This August, a panel of five Samsung judges named the 2022 winners of the competition. In the 11-13 age category Alek, aged 13, from Hallows Catholic School, was chosen as the winner. Alek’s idea was ‘Green Solutions’, a knowledge sharing platform for farmers, to encourage them to discover and implement more sustainable farming practices. Runner-up was Filip, aged 11, also from Hallows Catholic School. Filip came up with ‘The Brilliant Buzzer’, which is a solar powered pollinating drone that uses cameras and AI to protect endangered plants.

In the 13-15 age category Finn and Josh from Grange Park School (Specialist School for Autism), both aged 14, were chosen as winners with their idea ‘Bin’. This smart bin educates users about the journey of their rubbish, aiming to increase recycling. Runner-ups were Amelie, Megan, and Laila, all aged 14 from Clayton Hall Academy with the ‘Smart Plug’. This plug reduces energy consumption and prevents wastage of electricity.

 

Winners will receive a Samsung Galaxy phone, and will get a VIP invitation to a Samsung event later this year. Their teachers will also receive a Samsung Galaxy Book, and their schools will get a Samsung QM49R UD Screen. Runner-ups will each receive a pair of Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro.
