Ridgefield Park,NJ  & MIAMI, Fla. – April 3, 2017 – Samsung Electronics America  (KRX:005930) (“Samsung”) today unveiled the  projects from the Samsung emPOWER Tomorrow program at Lakeview Elementary School in Miami, Fla. The showcase, hosted by Ann Woo, senior director of corporate citizenship, Samsung Electronics America, is a culmination of a 14-week program where fourth- and fifth-grade girls were encouraged to explore computer science and electrical engineering as part of Samsung emPOWER Tomorrow, an after-school initiative to inspire girls to pursue opportunities in these fields.

Since 2014, Samsung emPOWER Tomorrow tasks participants with creating their own sprite character and dance party on Scratch, a platform for creating interactive stories, games and animations, enabling the girls to take creative license in building out their character’s stories and backgrounds. They were also tasked with completing a wearable LilyPad e-sewing kit that conveniently attaches to their backpacks or jackets, allowing them to keep their project at the end of the program.

Since the program’s start, Samsung emPOWER Tomorrow, an extension of  the Samsung Solve For Tomorrow initiative, has introduced over 600 young girls to the people, technologies and processes behind the software and hardware they use in everyday life, with another 350 girls expected to participate by year end. The program fosters a safe, fun and hands-on environment where participants interact with Samsung computer scientists, learn about influential female scientists, experiment with coding and electrical circuits and make real-world connections between computer science and electrical engineering. Samsung emPOWER Tomorrow upholds Samsung’s commitment to raising student interest in STEM subjects and building the next generation of scientists and engineers.

“The Samsung emPOWER Tomorrow event is a real testament to Samsung’s investment in education, especially for young women in science and technology,” said Ann Woo. “It is an honor to not only co-host the showcase, but to witness the brainpower of these bright, young minds and it excites me to see how this experience will frame their future.”
