Samsung Electronics America, Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), today announced it will provide free knob locks or covers to owners of certain slide-in electric ranges with front-mounted knobs as part of a voluntary recall. The affected models were sold in the U.S. from 2013 to 2024. This announcement follows reports that front-mounted range knobs can be activated through accidental contact by people or pets, posing a fire hazard if flammable objects are left on top of the range. Samsung is providing slide-in electric range customers with a set of free knob locks or covers, depending on their model, to prevent accidental activations from occurring.

To receive a set of free knob locks or covers, depending on their model, customers can visit samsung.com/us/support/range-knob-kit, contact Samsung toll-free at 1-833-775-0120 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or by email at rangesupport@sea.samsung.com.

Samsung range knobs meet industry safety standards established by UL Standards & Engagement – including a two-step activation requiring sequential ‘push and turn’ movements – and consumers may continue to use their slide-in electric ranges while awaiting their set of free knob locks or covers.  Consumers should always be mindful of accidental activation and never leave anything on their range top surface when it is not in use.

Advancing Industry Standards

The CPSC’s public data contains numerous reports of ranges with front-mounted knobs, across many home appliance manufacturers, that were activated through accidental contact.

As the #1 appliance brand in the U.S., with a commitment to consumer safety, we are participating in ongoing conversations hosted by the CPSC’s Joint Gas and Electric Range Knob Working Group where major brands across the appliance industry discuss how to revisit knob safety standards for all ranges to address inadvertent activation.

Samsung remains committed to delivering high-quality, innovative and safe products that enhance customers’ lives. Introduced in April of 2024, all new Samsung slide-in ranges include the industry’s first built-in three-step Precision Knobs, requiring a natural ‘pinching’ action before the ‘push and turn’ to ensure knobs are only activated intentionally.

This latest advancement builds on Samsung’s already existing safety features designed to notify consumers of accidental activation:

  • Many Samsung ranges with Wi-Fi connectivity can be configured through the Samsung SmartThings app to send mobile notifications instantly when a burner is first activated. SmartThings app can be installed on mobile devices to connect smart home devices, including Samsung Home Appliances.
  • Certain Samsung range models feature Illuminated Knobs that display a distinctive blue LED light around the knob’s base when a burner is activated.
Safety Advice for Consumers

Samsung recommends consumers follow these range-safety precautions, regardless of range type or manufacturer:

  • While not actively cooking, never place, leave, or store anything on the top of your range.
  • Keep children and pets away from range knobs.
  • Be sure to check your range knobs to ensure they are turned off after cooking.
