Samsung’s Climate Superstar Challenge was recognized for Environmental Leader’s Project of the Year for their partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, an online environmental contest designed to engage and educate youths ages 11 – 13 in various activities that help to protect the environment. Over a seven week period, club members completed tasks centered on improving energy-efficiency, conserving water and reducing waste, including identifying energy efficient products, planting trees, recycling electronics, and more. Results were captured via an online gaming platform specifically designed for the contest and students were awarded with Samsung products for their outstanding efforts.

“Samsung knows that our role in society moves beyond our products, so we work hard to meet our social responsibility in promoting sustainable social development and bettering the lives of people everywhere, including education and local community development,” said Sue Pinera, Senior Manager of Corporate Sustainability, Samsung Electronics America. “Samsung is strongly committed to inspiring today’s children and believe that educating the youth of today will enable positive change in the future. Climate Superstars provides access to information that will equip these students with the knowledge and tools they need to empower them as stewards of global sustainability.”

Remarks from the judges included:

Project of the Year: Samsung Climate Superstars Challenge

“This is a fantastic program.  Teaching our next generation not only creates a better next generation, but young people have a way of creating the same behavior in the adults in their life.  Engaging youth in science and math are much needed in our current state of the country.  A program like this not only engages kids in these important fields but gets them active in their communities, understanding the importance of environmental responsibility at a young age, and creates a ripple effect with their peers.”

“Samsung should be applauded for their efforts in engagement and awareness on sustainability issues with the leaders of tomorrow. Of note, the creation of a gaming approach to some of the sustainability discussions is a novel approach to reach out utilizing multiple learning methods.”
